Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together.

We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to either walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, or tune in to Trinity@Home on line, we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do.

We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality.

So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other in this community and this world- we believe we are better and love more when diversity is celebrated and the bounds of God’s love are stretched wide.

This bulletin is a guide to accompany you through the “liturgy”- meaning the “work of the people”- which is how our tradition approaches worship. It does indeed take a village bringing all of its gifts together to create our expression of gratitude and devotion week after week.

Earth as the Original Sacrament

May Christ who shimmers in all creation surprise you each day with glittering moments, when you can see again how Light lives in everything, how it partners with dark soil to bring forth aster and lavender, rosemary and daffodils, a hundred kinds of squash, kale and cabbage, apple and berry, grapes sweetened by the sun.

How the dough you knead in your hands

is an alchemy of touch and time, how everything is a call to communion – the wafer of moon, a chalice of stars.

Let the Mystery of it all dance in your heart, always widening your horizons, inhabiting new landscapes.

May you know each moment as sacred and everything around you a call to remember this one true thing.

We give thanks to You, who are the Source of Love; whose Light shines forth throughout the universe!

Many there are who boast of their own deeds, who are proud of their power over others.

Where will they be when storms arise, when earthquakes shatter the rocks of their hearts?

Only the humble will call to the Spirit to help them in times of distress; The wise wait not for trouble, but communicate with the Counselor in all things.

Enter the Holy Temple of your heart, and learn to still the tumult of the mind; For, to be serene even in the midst of chaos, is to know the efficacy of calmness.

As we work together with Christ, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.”

See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hungers; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. Make us faithful to your call to proclaim your Good News, by word and example, and bring us at last into the glorious company of the saints in light. Thursday, 6/24, 7:00pm, The Way of Love Book Group- Last fall, a group of us gathered to discuss Scott Gunn’s latest book, The Way of Love: A Practical Guide to Following Jesus. We are running the book group again, to coincide with Lisa’s summer sermon series on the Way of Love. We will be meeting Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm, June 17 – August 5, on Zoom. Each Sunday, Lisa will preach on one of the facets of the Way of Love, and we will discuss the corresponding chapter the following Thursday. please visit our website to register via Sign up Genius and a Zoom link will be emailed to you.

Sundays 6/27, 7/25 & 8/29, 1:00-3:00pm, All Parish Picnics- We have reserved the newly renovated Levis Square one block away from Trinity. Bring your own picnics, chairs and blankets (they also have some seating). We will also order box lunches for our Toledo Streets vendors and invite them to join us as well! We’ll have live music and enjoy our time together.
