AUDITOR'S WELCOME Greetings Freshmen! Welcome to college, welcome to Trinity and most importantly (drumroll please) welcome to LawSoc. For over a year, your life has been defined by uncertainty. However, this year your life at University should be defined with absolute certainty as the greatest experience yet (just ask Graham Norton). LawSoc is here to ensure that is the case. With world renowned guest speakers (rumour has it Dr McDreamy took a day off from the hospital), the best black tie balls on campus, trips near and far far away (ready to get LAWst?), diverse career events and acclaimed competitions (did I mention our collab with Cambridge), at LawSoc we have you covered. But we don’t just want to see you, we want to hear you, we want you to leave your mark on our society (and I’m not just referring to a scandalous night at Law Ball). Whether that’s publishing an article in the Trinity Women in Law Report or volunteering to help secondary school students with LawSoc Outreach or agreeing to fight your “friend” in our Charity Boxing event (all for the good causes of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre) or even attending our brand new Freshers’ Club events, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. So start shaking hands and kissing babies to secure that coveted first year rep spot, start crafting your cover letter to be our new events ambassador and start your application for the Charities subcommittee. Your great college experience starts with LawSoc. This week, we will give you an introduction that you will never forget. Adopting a blended approach to in person and online events, LawSoc plans to leave a lasting impression! Start your Freshers by stretching those muscles and cleansing the soul (you’re going to need it) with Pilates lead by our very own LawSoc grown instructor Ruth (also known as Madame Secretary) before you join us in the ENTs Marque that evening to meet Love Island host Laura Whitemore. If you’re not able to make it on campus, why not come along to our virtual coffee morning on Tuesday where we will be partnering with Trinity FLAC to give you an opportunity to meet your lecturers, learn what being “a Law kid” is all about and find out what to expect this year. Temperatures are expected to rise on Wednesday (no weather forecast predications needed) for our scavenger hunt as you will race around Dublin city cable tied to your partner. If your still alive by Thursday, join us on zoom for a chat with Michael McDowell, former Attorney General of Ireland, and then log onto our Comedy Debate where Trinity professors and students will take on our UCD rivals (a reminder that you chose your CAO right). Finally, prepare to go head to head with your new besties in our Charity tag rugby tournament on Friday, then meet us to finish off the week for an Outdoor Movie Night with the Hist!

The 88th session of LawSoc want to make sure you have the greatest college experience. So get onto campus or hop onto that zoom, meet as many “characters” as you possibly can (they will shortly become your closest of friends) and make the most of what will undoubtedly be some of the best years of your life!

EVENTS EVENTS LawSoc is headed back to the west yet again for our annual Galway trip. On the 8th and 9h of October we’ll be indulging in two decadent nights of questionable decision and one or two too many renditions of Galway girl. This LawSoc staple is not to be missed, trust us on this.

For one night only you can swap your face mask for a Venetian guise at Trinity’s sleekest event. With one ticket, you’ll be swept away to a secluded castle far out in the country. Bask in the anonymity in the dark corridors and banquet hall as the strobe lights and music go long into the night.

After a two year hiatus, one of our landmark events is back. We will be kicking off ball season by whisking you away to one of Dublin’s classiest venues and throwing back to better times when dark, stylish gangs held sway. Join us for the renaissance of the roaring 20s in style.

With a reputation that far precedes it, the annual Maples Law Ball is the jewel in our sparkling social crown. A black tie banquet in a top-secret location, a three-course gourmet feast, live music and the awards event of the year await you in this Hilary term event. It has all the glitz and glam of Trinity ball, but with pics you might actually want to post the next day.

EVENTS EVENTS In its inaugural year, the Law Societies across the seven Universities of Ireland are coming together for the first time ever to host the Intervarsity Law Society Summit. As this year’s host society is UCC LawSoc, we will be heading to the lovely Cork for a weekend of speaker events, “friendly” competitions and of course a Ball. You won’t want to miss it!

LawSoc has a proud tradition of bringing its members to some of the continent’s most exciting and exotic places (not to mention that time Law Ball was in Offaly) and this year is no different! For two unforgettable nights this spring, LawSoc will bring you to yet another mystery location and give you the chance to indulge in as much Culture, Architecture and Cuisine as you can handle - and they’re just the names of the nightclubs. With Eoghan Quinn as the mastermind behind the plan, you couldn’t be in safer hands...

An 88th Session invention, Freshers Club is a new subset of Law Soc which will host social events throughout the year, aimed at JF/SF Law Soc members. Boozy bingo, pizza parties and countless nights out are in the works... the Club calendar is PACKED, and will culminate in the inaugural Freshers Fest (think T-Ball).

Marking the launch of Law Soc’s 88th Session’s Freshers’ Club, we’re hiring! Applications are now being accepted for Law Soc Ents Ambassador, a position which will entail working alongside the Social Secretary in helping to organise Freshers’ Club events.

Freshers’ Club is the new subset of Law Soc which will host smaller events that cater specifically for our youngest members.

The Ambassador would be in 1st - 2nd year (JS/JF) preferably, but applications are open to, and welcome from, everyone. A great taster of Law Soc life, fantastic way to get firsthand experience! Due to the introductory nature of the role’s work, and the fact that the Ambassador would work closely with incoming first years, this position would be best suited to first or second years, however, applications are open to all!

SPEAKERS This year, LawSoc has set itself the goal of having more amazing speakers than we have ever had before! All speaker events will be livestreamed and uploaded to LawSoc social media pages. While audiences will be limited, those present will be socially distant, and questions will be sourced from members prior to interviews.

In any case, speakers will continue to be a key aspect of LawSoc this year for you to learn from, laugh with or maybe just be starstruck by.

PATRICK DEMPSEY PATRICK DEMPSY McDreamy, or should we say Mr.Patrick Dempsey, is a Hollywood star and the best gift to Irish tourism since the Gathering ! From Greys Anatomy to Enchanted, Mr.Dempsey has graced our screens for years and now he will grace the LawSociety with his dazzling presence as he accepts our prestigious Praeses Elit award.

IAN HISLOP A British journalist, satirist, writer, broadcaster, and editor of the magazine Private Eye - there is quite literally nothing Mr.Hislop has not done. Except for talking to LawSoc of course ! We are excited to welcome him as a speaker so that we can have his take on the current political scene and so that he can add LawSoc speaker to his list of achievements.

LAURA WHITMORE Ms.Laura Whitmore is a presenter, she is a host, she is an author and she is a role model in a social media age. Through her charity work and her writing, Ms.Whitmore has undeniably broadened the perspectives of others and because of that, she will receive our brand new award, the Allii Proelio - making her the inaugural recipient.

A name you may not be familiar with but a trial that we all know.

Mr.Schleicher was one of the three key prosecutor’s in the case of Mr.George Flloyd and it will be an honour to host him in Trinity to speak about that case which changed the world.

Mr.Stanley Tucci Mr.Tucci is one of the greats, and now he will be one of the great LawSoc speakers. A talented actor, a familiar face, a reassuring presence and a multifaceted man, Mr.Tucci has used his talent to play and advance discussion about minority groups and struggles faced by others.

It will be our privilege to present him with the Praeses Elit.

Ms.Christine Baranski A lawyer on screen and a legend off of our screens. Diane Lockhart, The Good Wife, is a strong female lead, similarly Tonya in Mamma Mia knows her worth. Ms.Baranski is a trailblazing female actress and when she accepts the Praeses Elit she will also be talking to us about her incredible philanthropy.

COMPETITIONS

JUNIOR MOCK TRIAL Have you got what it takes to be the next Harvey Specter? Are you looking for an exciting way to meet overly competitive, overly dressed and overly argumentative people just like you? Can you handle the fire hot heat of a courtroom? Then participating in the Junior Mock Trial is for you! Well suit up and find your Mike Ross (someone who actually studies the reading list) and begin your journey to become Trinity’s finest legal star. Cross examine witnesses, deliver opening statements and craft compelling, heart-warming and tear jerking arguments to make it past the group stages which will be followed by the big grand final!

Each round will be judged by a real-life barrister and expect a star studded lineup for the final rounds. So sign up, get involved and get ready because the court is almost in session!

SENIOR MOCK TRIAL Been eyeing up that internship at Matheson? Thought you’d be alone in Bologna living out your Erasmus dream? Stressed about that looming thesis on a title you can’t seem to remember? Well buckle up and throw your hat in the ring for the Senior Mock Trial. Open to third and fourth year students, bolster your CV and gain valuable advocacy experience for the future. We can also guarantee you some in-person contact, even though “Tómas from Kerry” may be concurrently joining us via Zoom. In any case, this is something you won’t want to miss!

NEW! TRINITY v CAMBRIDGE VARSITY MOCK TRIAL Ever wanted to show off in front of more than just your Trinity peers? Say no more, Law Soc knows what’s up! Let’s find out if Trinners truly are winners in a courtroom contest against Cambridge! In an exciting addition to this year’s Law Soc calendar, Trinity will host the University of Cambridge in a varsity mock trial. The finalists of the Senior Mock Trial will be invited to represent Trinity in this varsity mock trial. Present to the Court in a series of trials, progress to the final and compete against a Counsel from this top English university!

LEGAL INNOVATION COMPETITION Like the law like innovating? If so, it was God’s plan to have you compete in our Hilary term competition. Our second year of this exciting competition develop your pitching, design, and commercial skills in front of a panel of highly experienced judges. You and your partner won’t have to worry about gruelling weeks of work as this competition is all done and dusted in one day!

COMMERCIAL NEGOTIATONS The corporate environment involves negotiating, striking deals and bargaining with partners. Lawyers are often involved in settling disputes through compromise and getting the best deal for their client. In the Commercial Negotiations competition, teams of two represent a client and negotiate with an opposing team. Your goal is to secure the best deal for your fictional client (usually named something like Gill Bates of MicroHard) by applying the information you are given.This competition will equip you with essential skills such as: negotiating your way out of leaving your table at Little Pyg after 1hr45mins or getting the Xico bouncer to let you in when you're under 21 once clubs re-open.

Public Service Announcement: Specific legal knowledge is not necessary, but a finely chiseled jawline and a strong handshake are beneficial.

NATALIE FORDE MEMORIAL MAIDENS COMPETITION This debating competition invites first and second year students to develop essential skills such as public speaking, persuasive language and the construction of arguments. The Maidens debating competition will take place in the second term, providing an excellent opportunity to competitively argue against your new found friend… or foe.

The debating motions are law-centric, offering you a perfect platform to discuss contentious law related themes. If you are a first-time debater or debating enthusiast, we encourage you to channel your inner cutthroat contrarian who can hold their own against even the most obnoxious Leinster Schools debater. We can’t wait to see you!

NEW! FRESHERS TOUCH RUGBY TOURNAMENT We will be starting this year off with a BANG as we host a day-long touch rugby tournament. Prepare for a day filled with adrenaline, highlighter-coloured bibs and classic liners including ‘you know I could have played for Leinster if I didn’t injure my knee when I was 12’ (there’s always one). This is the perfect way for freshers to be introduced to their fellow law students, through some healthy(ish) competition, emphasis on the ISH. We’ll be booking out the pitches on campus (COVID permitting) so get your teams together and get pumped for the chance to be crowned touch rugby champions. If you don’t have a team, don’t worry, give us a message and we can put a team together!

NEW! LAWST

This November, we are launching LAWST! The premise of this COVID friendly fundraiser is simple. You are dropped in a mystery location, given a variety of riddles to solve, the first team that makes it back to HQ is crowned the winner! Participants will have to raise €50 per person to take part. There will be spot prizes, freebies and hopefully some kind of hunger games style comradery will emerge!

In any case, this promises to be an expedition you will not forget. (You will also get a free Arthur Cox branded t-shirt for taking part @ all those looking to sell themselves to corporate law).

CHARITY 'BOXING DAY'

For the second time we will be hosting a Charity ‘Boxing Day’. The event will require 30 of the college's bravest souls to raise €100 through sponsorship. They will then take to the ring to batter the head of one of their closest friends or maybe even a frenemy, all in the name of charity. Those taking part will be given the chance to break out of their comfort zones, with the provided training hopefully ensuring that they do not break their nose in the process. But it's not just an event for the competitors, it's also a great night for the spectators. This year we will be running a betting competition, so even if you're not participating in fight night you’ll still be in with the chance of winning a little something.

NEW! CHARITY FASHION SHOW This year Law Soc charities is teaming up with the Fashion Soc to put together a spectacular charity fashion show. This fundraising event is set to be one of our most anticipated events yet, with the hope that we celebrate not just our chosen charity DRCC, but also local fashion designers. Think about your best mate slaying a catwalk in some Lady Gaga circa 2010 couture and tell me this isn’t something you want to support.

LAW DAY

Law Day is our flagship fundraiser every year. This year we have got a day PACKED filled with activities and events. You should expect to see purple t-shirt wearing Law Soc volunteers taking over College, shaking buckets and hassling you for spare change. We’ll also be armed with card machines, so you aren’t getting away that easily! There will also be the chance to compete in the annual 5-a side comp during the day and the wonderful bingo loco at night. Throughout the day we will also be running a Butlers’ tab which was a huge success last year, meaning if you donate to charity you will be getting a free coffee to appease your caffeine addiction. Law Day is undeniably one of the highlights of the student calendar, so make sure it is one you do not miss!

After reading our fabulous calendar for the year I’m sure you’re wondering how YOU can get involved. Luckily, we are looking for a first year to join our sub-committee. This first year will join the Fundraising Officers in being tasked with thinking of creative ideas for fundraising throughout the year. They will also play a role in bringing these events to life by helping to book venues and general event organisation. If you’re a passionate individual, who is excited about the possibility of dedicating your time to fundraising for DRCC, then this is the perfect role for you!

Trinity Women in Law (TWIL), the first initiative of its kind in Ireland, is back again to bring you a year of fun, interactive events based on intersectional, gender-based topics.

Our TWIL Officer, Rebecca, and everyone on our team is eager to strengthen our community of members, bringing everyone together to spark conversations on issues arising from our environment as women & non-binary individuals. If you want to see what it’s all about, come along to our events to get involved!

This year, we will continue to host our classic events that you all know and love such as the inaugural Mentorship Programme (and) Launch, which sees growing success each year, as well as some new additions such as the publication of a TWIL report at the end of the year. We also plan on hosting an interactive Unconscious Bias workshop, open to all members, as well as launching a period poverty drive for women in poverty, a Women Who Wow Panel & photo exhibition, TWIL Day and so much more!

With a passionate subcommittee and TWIL Officer dedicated to ensuring the highest success of all of our events, TWIL is bound to be one of LawSoc’s highlights again this year!

Following its success from last year, we are re-launching our mentorship programme to engage hundreds of Secondary School Students across Ireland. Our goal is to break down the barriers to law, to promote inclusion and access to the law for all people from all backgrounds. It's been 28 years since Jack Nicholson told a lawyer he couldn't handle the truth in A Few Good Men. I feel it's overdue, and the truth we are spreading

everyone

for

everyone. Here's how we're going to do it.

Our mentors will be working with TY students from Deis schools all across Ireland for an immersive, informative introduction into the world of a law student. Through their monthly meetings with students, our mentors will outline just what goes on in the legal profession, what exactly it is a law student does and most importantly, show that behind the towers of textbooks and strange figures in robes and wigs that the law is for everyone whether you use it to study, practice, or to be interpreted yourself in future. Our outreach programme's goal is to show all the students involved that when they inevitably are required to have an encounter with the law, be that as a student, a practitioner, getting insurance on your first car, or even just watching an exciting courtroom, drama on TV. Because of the Trinity Law Society Outreach Programme, they

will

feel

more

comfortable,

confident

and

informed

in

that

environment.

On top of our lessons and information sessions, we have also prepared the Outreach programme handbook, which will act as the bible for any young student wishing to further expand their knowledge with exclusive insights into the life of a law student, a collection of work opportunities in the legal industry as well as a detailed guide on mock trials and how to take your advocacy skills from hardly specified to Harvey spectre, put together by our wonderful subcommittee.

And lastly, for the grandstand finish, we will be running a mock trial competition for all the schools to take part in. This will culminate in a final that will take place on Trinity College Campus for TLO day. We will invite the participating students up for a full day of enjoyable lawrelated activities on our wonderful campus.

categorizing everyone she knows into Sex and the City characters, (she’s just suchhhh a Samantha right?!), Anne enjoys sending twentyfive minute long voice notes and attending bi-weekly reunion dinners with the Ursiline gals. After spending two years on committee and throwing away her brand new Doc Martens because they were “not auditor enough,” no one can doubt Anne’s commitment to the Law Soc throne.

LEESHA CURTIS: TREASURER From

Forget that she can’t actually pronounce the word “treasurer” and has been accused of being a member of the Russian secret service, there is no one we would rather hand over the entirety of the Law Soc funds to. Afterall, Leesha clearly knows a thing or two about financing, as currently she is single-handedly keeping the temporary hair dye market afloat.

RUTH BRADY: SECRETARY Even though Ruth started college at the tender age of 15, you could easily mistake her for a millennial due to her affinity for fitted blazers and overuse of “don’t talk to

me

fortnight for the last year, Ruth can only be relieved to be shifting her focus to enticing guest speakers to Law Soc with the promise of a custom porridge bowl over at @trinityporridgedublin. Speaking to Ruth is a lot like listening to your prerecorded lectures on 1.5 speed, you might not be taking it all in, but you wouldn’t have it any other way. With flaming red locks that are pending approval for national heritage status at this very moment, Ruth will have her hands full next year whether she’s running a cut-throat election campaign for an uncontested, parttime position with the SU or figuring out how to collab with both the JCR and Trinity Ents for “Leah Keogh Speaks to Law Soc.” Have no fear, she’ll find a way.

EMILY DUNCAN: SOCIAL SECRETARY Law Soc’s answer to Pitbull, Mrs Worldwide Emily has literally flown across the globe in order to single-handedly resuscitate Law Soc’s social scene. Almost as fond of a good night out as she is of a good platform shoe, no one can accuse Emily of not knowing how to party. The fact that in her election speech she listed “I like to party” as relevant work experience sets the tone of what Law Soc events will be like with her at the helm. And what if Covid spoils her plans?

Not to worry, Law Ball can always be relocated to the sweeping outdoor patio of Emily’s “student” city centre apartment.

SOPHIE TREACY: LIBRARIAN Like a spicy prawn or a chewed piece of scampi love her or loath her she’ll certainly leave an impression and before you know she’s out the door with a first. This is a women who doesn’t make mistakes (let’s pretend the French part of law French didn’t happen). She’s a kean,

punches and we love her for it. Smart and dependable. Very good in a crisis. Just don’t get in her way ! REBECCA KELLY: TWIL OFFICER If you don’t know her from spamming your course groupchat, you definitely know her from Twitter, (as her profile picture will tell you, she basically invented the bold red lip). Between acting as the SU Gender Equality Officer and volunteering for every woman’s cause on the island, our new TWIL Officer is nothing short of a feminist icon.

In fact, Rebecca is so enthusiastic about women’s movements that rumour has it she once attempted to launch a campaign for ‘tiddies out at AC internship 2021’ at virtual Law Ball last year. Ever since she got a contract law stress-induced female symbol tattoo, her fate as TWIL Officer was sealed. We can’t wait to see where she takes TWIL, no doubt it will be fully documented over on the Twitter-verse.

FIONN O'CALLAGHAN: TLSO OFFICER Our inaugural TLO Officer will struggle to wedge this position into his CV between his previous roles as night-shift security guard at a Dublin homeless hostel, day-shift security guard at the Berkeley shortloan and “Head of Slaughtering Operations” at a chicken factory in rural County Monaghan. This GAA-player-turned-Trinity-Humanitiesstudent is living proof that Connell Waldron would have loved Trinity if he’d just joined Law Soc, so there is no better man to convince the masses that Trinity is accessible for all. When he’s not running TAL, Fionn can be found outside the Arts Block, reminiscing on his days in Cunningham House while impressively slotting in a Godfather quote every three sentences. Born in Hong Kong, (if her “Made in China” tattoo didn’t make that clear), “christened” in Magaluf and raised in Killiney, Ashling’s cosmopolitan background will provide plenty of inspo for competition material, (apparently the motion for this year’s Maiden’s Final will be “THB Gingers Should Not Wear Orange”). As a keen amateur tennis player and Ec & Fi WAG, Ashling’s busy schedule means her daily morning swim on Killiney beach will have to take a back seat if she’s going to organise a jam packed year of competitions. We don’t know how she’ll do it.

JOE BOSONNET: FIRST YEAR REP Despite having avoided the county for the entire summer, Joe is LawSocs co-Cork Convenor this year! When not bolstering his chances for re-election as LawPol Class Rep Joe can be found trying to argue Cork is Ireland’s San Francisco. The Gaeilgeoir will certainly be a change for LawSoc Mock Trials given his love of floral shirts over a slick suit and the fact that last year as a witness he tried to blame a manslaughter charge on his innocent 17-year-old son. Joe will also be available for eight hours plus walking tours of Dublin that will have you looking in great shape for Law Ball!

completely dwarfed when one considers that Eoghan managed to bag himself one of the biggest and most important positions on committee this year: fourth year representative. Describing himself as a “qualified corporate lawyer” when talking to girls on the dancefloor of London nightclubs or when engaged in disputes with random Depop sellers, there is nobody more suited to represent the fourth year cohort as they descend into Training Contract hunting season. One thing’s for sure, if Eoghan approaches this position with a fraction of the enthusiasm and energy he deployed for the by-election in Dublin Bay South, we’re in for a treat.

JACK ROONEY: THIRD YEAR REP The Mayo Man. The silent but sound soldier. Jack. The Roonster. Call him what you will. Jack is truly a Jack of all trades. He is an international and national man of mystery (a feat he only shares with the greats, such as the right honourable Mr.Marty Morrisey), he can drive to and from Mayo, and now, he can add Galway trip organiser to his list of achievements. As a man who hails from the West himself (I don’t know if we mentioned, he is from Mayo!), Jack is looking forward to organising the annual pilgrimage of south Dublin's babies to the deep, dark, debaucherous (Jack's words, not mine) depths to Ireland’s craic capital (different kinda craic remember). Third years, take note of the name. Today its third year LawSoc rep, tomorrow, the world.

LOUISE CULLEN: SECOND YEAR REP Making up one third of the second year LawPol resistance group that completely blindsided the rest of the committee, Louise is our resident Gaeilgeoir and Second Year Representative. As a committee largely composed of people who scraped through Ordinary Level Irish in the Leaving Cert thinking ‘Colscaradh’ was a type of rash, many of us are yet to understand a word Louise has said; but if her passion for Law Soc runs as deep as her passion for taking down fast fashion, things are looking

promising.
