Trinity Services and Abundant Living for All Foundation break ground for new pool house in Mascoutah
In 2012 , Abundant Living for All (ALFA) Foundation started a capital campaign to build a pool for persons with physical and intellectual disabilities at the Trinity Southwest Day and Residential Program in Mascoutah, Illinois.
That dream eventually became a reality. However, the organization also wanted to construct a pool house to provide a much-needed restroom, locker facilities, and shade structure.
Supported by a $54,000 grant from
the Veterans United Foundation, and with generous donations from a wide array of supporters including the Belleville Masons, construction of the new pool house began on May 22, 2023 and was completed by the end of June.
“Having a pool on site provides disabled individuals many opportunities for swimming and aquatic therapy that could not be realized off site,” said Martha Dowling, treasurer for ALFA Foundation. “The generosity of our local community is simply amazing. So

Dear Friends,
It certainly has been a terrfic summer! I hope everyone was able to getout and enjoy the many activities we have to offer in the local area.
Speaking of weather, we had perfect conditions and a wonderful turnout for the 29th Annual Tom O’Reilly Memorial Golf Classic held at The Odyssey Golf Course in Tinley Park on May 18.
Thank you to our generous sponsors, golfers, and hard-working volunteers and staff who made this a very special event, raising a considerable amount to help support our mission.
Hats off to our castaways of the S.S. Minnow, who spent the afternoon as characters from Gilligan’s Island and helped to make the day a fun experience for all.
Trinity also hosted a very successful Trinity Triumph 5K on June 15. Over 150 people registered for the race that wound its way through the beautiful Wildwood subdivision just south of Village Hall and finished in the Village Commons. Congratulations to our winners on a great achievement. We also want to thank our generous sponsors, volunteers, and staff members for another great event.
Please do not forget to save the date for the 34th Annual Trinity Dinner Dance and Auction at The Oydssey on Saturday, September 23. As always, we will have a delicious
dinner, followed by dancing, and an opportunity to bid on some incredible items at our silent and live auctions. Get your friends together and come out and support Trinity Services.
You will certainly want to read the Someone You Should Know article featuring Carrie Ann Boronda who runs Trinity’s Homeless Support Team, as well as the fine story about STRIDES, our amazing theraputic riding center and animal farm in Manhattan.
Finally, I want to congratulate Mike Lowry, Susan Faulk, and Network 8 on the construction of the new pool house. A big thank you goes out to the ALFA Foundation and to the Veterans United Foundation and Belleville Masons for helping to raise the money for this important project. The new pool house will provide a much needed restroom, locker room, and shade structure for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities at the Trinity Southwest Day and Residential Program in Mascoutah.
Sincerely,
Raymond D. McShane, Chairperson of the Board

many organizations stepped up. It was most impressive.”
ALFA and Trinity Services contracted with Middendorf Construction for the project.
With the many variables in providing support for individuals with disabilities including transportation issues, adaptive equipment, and staffing, opportunities for swimming in the community were challenging and often times impossible.
Gather your friends together, reserve a table, and help us support a truly great cause.
Later, vocalist Diva Montell entertains during dessert and coffee and leads guests in the singing of Christmas carols.
“We are extremely grateful to ALFA Foundation and to everyone who worked so incredibly hard over the past eleven years to make this happen.” said Mike Lowry, Director, Trinity Services Southwest Illinois. “It’s wonderful to have the worked completed so people can enjoy the summer with these terrific facilities.”

Trinity Services celebrates Juneteenth Freedom Day and PRIDE Month with barbecues and competitions!
On Monday, June 19, Trinity Services hosted its second annual Juneteenth Freedom Day with celebration picnics in New Lenox, Des Plaines, Peoria, Mascoutah, the Trinity School, and at all of the community day sites.
Juneteenth Freedom Day marks the date of June 19, 1865 in honor of the day troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce and enforce
emancipation for enslaved people.
Guest were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, cookies, and drinks. President and CEO Thane A, Dyskstra, Ph.D. enjoyed cooking and interacting with everyone.

for the people we support and our staff.”
Prior to the picnics, Trinity Services’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee hosted virtual sessions about Juneteenth history, meanings, and traditions.

Someone You Should Know
Carrie Ann Boronda, HSP Director
Carrie Ann Boronda is the director of Trinity Services’ Homeless Support Program (HSP), a well-managed, highly productive team comprised of clinical therapists and clinical support specialists dedicated to helping reduce and eventually eliminate homelessness in Will County and other areas in Illinois.
Carrie, who received her Bachelor’s degree in marketing and graphic design, originally planned to have a career in advertising. However, working with dementia patients in adult day care, while going to school full-time, opened up a whole new world for Carrie, who discovered her passion for working with seniors and people with disabilities.
Following graduation, Carrie spent eleven years at the Windmill Nursing Pavilion in South Holland as the director of activities, becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Offered the position of memory care director at an assisted living facility in Joliet, Carrie eventually became the facility’s marketing director, helping families find placement. Then COVID hit.
Carrie took some needed time off. Then she applied for the position of Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) administrator with Trinity Services. Shortly thereafter, Carrie became the
HSP director. In this role, Carrie brings compassion, dedication, experience, and a holistic philosophy to her new position, while emphasizing a team concept.
“It is essential that individuals not be defined by their homeless experience,” said Boronda. “We, as a team, look at individuals as whole persons, who need more than just a roof over their heads to succeed.”
The Trinity HSP helps people by applying for grants through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or through the counties. The grants pay for rental assistance, while at the same time HSP clinical support specialists, or case managers, provide additional support, assisting people with developing or relearning life skills.
“Some of the people we support need to learn the basics of cooking meals, cleaning, and budgeting their money,” explained Boronda. “We supply individuals and families with clothing, food, cleaning supplies and toiletries, bedding, furniture – all of the necessary essentials, but we also help with resumes, interviews, and job placement.”
Homelessness in Will County is at an all-time high, due in part to individuals and families from other parts of Illinois,
and even other states, coming to the area to get assistance. “They know that Will County is doing an effective job helping the homeless,” said Boronda. “The word definitely gets around.”
When an individual or a family reaches out to Trinity, HSP, working with other support agencies, assists them in getting over to Catholic Charities’ Daybreak Shelter in Joliet to get their coordinated assessments completed. Once in the system, the individuals or families receive temporary shelter through Daybreak, while HSP clinical support specialists (intake and landlord engagement) work to find suitable permanent housing arrangements.
With a need so great, HSP has been the recipient of $2M in rapid re-housing grants from the State of Illinois, as well as new grants to develop its own food pantry and hold therapy sessions, which supports the holistic philosophy.
Now, with two new hires, HSP is moving into Kendall and Grundy Counties in the fall. Although there are a lot of moving parts, Boronda is pleased with the progress so far.
“We are growing and prospering, and expanding our presence to help more people succeed, which is why we’re here.”

Taking It All in STRIDES!
Laura Blume, a professional photographer with a degree in Psychology and a passion for horses, has been the Program Coordinator of the STRIDES Therapeutic Riding Center and Animal Farm since December 2020. For Blume, an effervescent personality, the job combines her strong desire to work with people with disabilities, her love of photography, and her fondness for animals. “For me, it was the perfect fit,” said Blume.
Starting her new job during the height of COVID, Blume had the rare opportunity to rebuild the STRIDES program from the ground up with the support of Trinity President and CEO Thane A. Dykstra, Ph.D., and Stephanie Behlke-Leigh, Ed.D., who oversees the STRIDES program.
“We gave Laura a chance to think outside the box,” said Behlke-Leigh, who supported Blume’s goal of making STRIDES more marketable to the public. “We definitely wanted to maintain the program’s core, which is serving people with disabilities. However, you also need public support to keep the program operating.”
As riders began returning to STRIDES in 2021, Blume introduced several new program elements including professional photography sessions with the animals, birthday parties, and a petting zoo, where families have a chance to interact with the horses, a mini cow, several goats and chickens, two pigs, a hedgehog, six cats, two bunnies, and a guinea pig.
Last year, STRIDES hosted their first Farm Family Day, which was a huge success. “Over 300 people turned out,” said Blume, who felt overwhelmed by the show of support. “STRIDES is definitely building a name within the community.”
This year, STRIDES has developed a partnership with the Lincoln-Way Special Recreation Center to provide riding lessons for the people they support, which begins this fall. Recently, the United Way toured the facility, and on August 30, the Village of New Lenox Community Impact Committee hosted a luncheon and fundraiser in support of STRIDES.
“Gaining corporate sponsors would definitely allow STRIDES to continue to improve the program, to add on
more lesson courses as needed, and help with the care and feeding of the animals,” said Blume. “We need $3,000 to $5,000 a month for each horse, which includes feed, vet care, medications, and equipment.
Blume gives a lot of credit for STRIDES success to her staff and volunteers. “I have a great team,” said Blume. “Everyone has a positive spirit and works together very well. It makes a big difference when you have people who are passionate about what they do.”
Amanda Albrecht, a barn hand who just celebrated her one-year anniversary at STRIDES, worked at another barn in Manhattan for a year and a half. “I wasn’t happy there,” says Albrecht. “This has been a great fit for me, especially working with the people I support. It’s amazing to work here.”
In addition to developing ongoing partnerships and corporate sponsorships, Blume hopes to get certifications to offer therapy services for people with behavioral needs. “Our goal is to be able to work with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and mental health therapists to provide animal therapy opportunities.”
STRIDES is always looking for volunteers and will host a volunteer open house on Saturday, September 30. For more information, become a sponsor, or to make a donation, contact Laura Blume at lblume@trinityservices.org.
