GIVING DAY 2022 BURSARIES CHANGE LIVES

DID YOU KNOW? WELCOME TO TRINITY GIVES 2022 Welcome to our biennial Giving Day in support of the Trinity Bursary Fund which helps keep our school accessible to an increasing number of bursary students, taken from every walk of life.

During the pandemic 13 families were able to keep their place at the school thanks to the Trinity Bursary Fund.

Total amount awarded from the Trinity Bursary Fund has risen from £108k in 2020 to £214k this year, and will rise to £350k next year.

Our last Giving Day in 2020 took place at the height of the pandemic. We are delighted that this time we can involve the whole school community in fundraising.

We will be running events and challenges on site at the school as well as online.

And, for one day only, for the first time in 25 years House competitions are back!

You can read here about our Giving Day challenges and how to get involved on 27 May. The day starts in Australia and ends on the West Coast of the USA. We will be contacting alumni and parents throughout the day and you can also check in on progress at TrinityGives.

10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE

SPORTS CHALLENGE A whole school community relay covering the distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats The total distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats is 1956 km, a staggering distance for a single athlete, but when we pull together as a community, we can achieve amazing things.

Our students and staff will be running laps of the lower field during Trinity Gives 2022.

Celebrating ten years of girls at Trinity This year we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of girls coming to Trinity by focusing on the great opportunities our coeducational Sixth Form provides for girls joining at 16+ and the enrichment of the whole school experience their presence brings.

The brainchild of Trinity's TPA, this challenge is hoping to raise sufficient donations from parents to provide a full two-year bursary for a new female student joining us in September 2022.

The total cost of the award will be £36,000. We will break the total amount down into smaller “fund a term challenges” on Giving Day. How quickly can we raise the first £6,000 to fund the Autumn Term of Lower Sixth?

ART ON A POSTCARD Our community of artists has come together to recognise the importance of Art as a medium for social change.

In support of the Trinity Bursary Fund, please join us for a private viewing of Trinity Art Department’s ‘Art on a Postcard’ fundraising exhibition in the Cube Gallery at Fairfield Halls.

All the works displayed at the exhibition have been created especially for the event by our students, staff, alumni, and the art community.

The private viewing takes place on Wednesday 25 May from 6pm to 8pm. Space is limited, so please book your free ticket below.

Our new Head of Art, James Robertson, is keen to forge links with the wider Trinity Community so, if you love art, come down to our Private Viewing at the Cube, enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or a soft drink, meet the department and explore ways you can get involved, all while supporting inclusivity at our school.

A donation of £20 - £50 is suggested. Every donor will be thanked with one of the pieces of art after Giving Day.

AFTER 25 YEARS, AND FOR ONE DAY ONLY, HOUSE COMPETITIONS ARE BACK! SCHOOL Trinity, also known as School House, is named after Trinity College Cambridge. In 1954, when Oliver Berthoud was looking to change our name of the school from Middle Whitgift School, having grown tired of our achievements being wrongly credited to the "other place" in South Croydon, including a reference to Trinity was the most obvious move. They have the honour of sharing the school’s name, but will they top the board?

PEMBROKE Pembroke House, named for the Cambridge hall of which John Whitgift became Master in 1567, was always at the leading edge of co-curricular activities at Trinity. Pembroke was the House for the all-rounder, for boys who balanced academic work with everything Trinity had to offer on the sports field, the stage and in the music department. Surely the winners on Giving Day?

CANTERBURY Canterbury House was named for the highest post achieved by our Founder, John Whitgift. Legendary House Masters included Mr Round and Mr Mapp in the 1960's and 1970's followed by Mr Brand, Mr Johnson and the ever-young Mr Tim Cattell. John Whitgift as Archbishop of Canterbury had the honour of crowning James I. Will we be crowning Canterbury House after Giving Day?

WORCESTER John Whitgift's service as Bishop of Worcester and vice president of the Marches of Wales, starting in 1577, gives rise to our House name. Presided over by just four Masters during the entirely of its history - Messrs. Meredith, Hiscock, Widger and Alexander. Worcester won the House Drama more times than any other of the Houses put together, but can they win on Giving Day?

HEAD TO HEAD The House system went 25 years ago, but can the generosity of younger alumni compete with older generations?

The Headmasters from your generation certainly hope so!

KENNEDY Every contribution to the Trinity Bursary Fund stops socio-economic disadvantage being a barrier to a great Trinity education. These are young people who can make a difference to our school and to the world beyond when they leave us. I can’t wait to meet and work alongside the young men and women whose lives will be changed and empowered by your generosity.

BISHOP I am acutely aware that very few Trinity students whom I was so fortunate to have been at the school with will have yet amassed significant resources or indeed any resources! Student debt, high rents, Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis will have made sure of that, but I hope that Trinity Gives 2022 will at least light a small flame that might allow you one day to help a future student benefit from a Trinity education.

A Trinity alumnus has committed to match all gifts made by Mr Tarrant and Mr Lenon's group of former students up to an initial amount of £1,000.

South London is not an especially wealthy area and over the years many hundreds of bright boys from lower income backgrounds have benefited hugely from a Trinity education. The school is what it is because of that diversity.

So it seems to me that now is the right time to contribute to the bursary fund if you possibly can.
