On the 1 August 2013, Swansea Metropolitan University became part of UWTSD. The University’s Royal Charter is the oldest in Wales and England after the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In 2011 HRH the Prince of Wales became its Royal Patron. The University’s main campuses are situated in various locations in and around Swansea’s city centre as well as in the rural towns of Lampeter and Carmarthen in South West Wales. The Wales International Academy of Voice, under the Directorship of Dennis O’Neill with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as its patron, is located in Cardiff and in addition the

More than a Degree We believe that our graduates stand out from the crowd. The Professional Certificate in Employability Skills is available to all students on degree programmes at the University, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Studying a few extra modules will enable you to achieve not just one, but two qualifications when you graduate.

This extra qualification further develops the key attributes employers are looking for, such as creativity, initiative, communication, problem solving and teamwork, and with the Professional Certificate on your CV you’ll be able to demonstrate to future employers or investors that you’re fully equipped for your future career.

Careers Guidance and Support The University has a dedicated careers service that is open to all students and graduates of the University. The service is run by professional careers staff and offers a wide range of services, from identifying possible career paths, job search, CV and interview advice, and finding careers information, to help with applying for postgraduate funding and study. The Careers team makes every effort to ensure that students find relevant graduate and parttime employment by informing them of the latest job vacancies via social media and our careers resource areas on campus.

Work Experience, Placements and Internships There is an opportunity for you to participate in national programmes, such as GO Wales, which often leads to permanent employment after graduation. The University also offers internships to enable students to find work with companies during vacation periods or to work on sustainability issues. Students are also encouraged to participate in placements as part of their degree.

Graduate Opportunities Wales We work in close partnership with GO Wales, which offers a range of services proven to help students, graduates and businesses in Wales. This includes work placements, work experience, the Graduate and Freelancer Academy, funding for training ( GTD) and an online database of jobs in Wales. GO Wales runs a 10-week placement programme designed for students and graduates to gain experience while working in a Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME), large or public funded organisations. Graduate Academy The GO Wales Graduate Academy is a free full-time and part-time training programme that aims to provide recent graduates with the skills and support needed to help gain graduate employment. Work experience is combined with a qualification awarded by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), and focuses on the real and practical skills required for success.

Work Tasters Work experience provides a useful insight into particular jobs and may help you decide on the right career path for you. Going on work experience can lead to job offers and can assist in employment and higher education applications.

Study Visits and Field Trips Opportunities for study visits and field trips are offered to most students. Although these are not always integral to the courses, in many cases they enable you to apply your knowledge to professional practice and serve to broaden your experience of your subject. In the past, students have enjoyed visits and field trips to such places as national parks, museums, galleries and theatres within the UK, including London’s art galleries, museums and West End shows. Recent field trip destinations have included Poland, Norway, France, The Gambia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, New Zealand and the United States to study aspects of their courses and to gain an international perspective on their chosen subject areas. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship We believe students need to be more effectively prepared for the world of work, particularly to work in business, and that enterprising, entrepreneurial students and employability go hand in hand. So we provide our students with the insight and experience of the many skills needed to both plan, organise and run a business, together with commercial experience and industry placements. We want all our students, but in particular those who may have come from backgrounds characterised by low self-esteem and achievement, to be able to overcome their fears of uncertainty, to have the concentration and determination to drive forward their ideas and to feel able to take considered risks. In short, we want to help them to be successful in whatever they choose to do. The development of these personal attributes is encouraged throughout our teaching, and enterprise and entrepreneurship is specifically embedded in the curriculum in the vast majority of courses including credit-bearing modules and assessment. In addition, we provide voluntary extra-curricular activities. These include schemes such as ‘Enterprise Week’, ‘Creative Bubble', ‘Graduate Launch Pad’ and Role Model workshops through ‘Shut Up and Start Up’ where students can meet inspirational graduates and work across all faculties and with all student groups.

From the bustle of waterfront city life in Swansea to the tranquillity of the countryside and breathtaking beauty of its sandy beaches, thereâ€™s something for everyone in South West Wales. With national parks, country parks, designated areas of outstanding beauty, clean rivers and beaches, West Wales is a favourite with those who enjoy the outdoors. It is a popular tourist destination and facilities and attractions include a wealth of National Trust properties, castles, gardens and seaside attractions, as well as theme parks including Oakwood and the Blue Lagoon Water Park.

The area is steeped in history and heritage and the surroundings provide our students with excellent opportunities to draw upon the rich natural resources as part of their programmes of study. Visit the Cistercian Abbey in Strata Florida and you may well see our Archaeology students digging for the hidden treasures of Medieval Wales; visit the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and you might find our Outdoor Education students abseiling down the cliffs. As well as the fabulous coast and countryside, Swansea provides a cosmopolitan city atmosphere with topflight football and rugby, and concerts from

international artists at the Liberty Stadium, along with a fantastic nightlife and great shopping. The annual Summer Ball is a highlight of the social calendar in Swansea, with recent headliners including Feeder (2009), Florence and the Machine (2010), The Streets (2011), Pixie Lott, Tim Minchin and Rudimental (2012), Sub Focus and Professor Green (2013). South West Wales quite simply has everything you could possibly want, within a short distance from our campuses.

A Rich Culture and an Ancient Language The University is located in an area which is naturally bilingual, where the English and Welsh languages live comfortably side by side. The majority of our programmes are delivered in English and we offer numerous courses through the medium of Welsh and bilingually. The University’s Welsh-medium provision is primarily based on the Carmarthen and Swansea Campuses and this means that if you are studying an English-medium course, you could study parts through the medium of Welsh. There is also a lively Welsh Society on the Carmarthen Campus that organises events and entertainment for its members. The University has also established a branch of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol with a dedicated officer to support those students who wish to pursue their academic studies through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. There’s plenty of opportunity for you to improve your Welsh or to learn the language if you wish.

The Urdd The University works in partnership with the Urdd, a Welsh-medium youth organisation, on a number of initiatives which enable staff and student collaboration. In particular, Outdoor Education students benefit from the Urdd’s facilities in Glanllyn, while Youth & Community students take advantage of the Urdd’s networks for work placements and course enrichment opportunities.

DISCOVER the Arts The University is integral to the growing arts scene in South Wales, with many of our graduates and students involved in developing the arts from grassroots level to the highest international standards.

We believe the arts are essential to all aspects of the community and run a wide range of community art projects, including Arts in Action and our Saturday Art School which integrate all aspects of the community. The university has a portfolio of international artists and designers teaching on its programmes, all of whom continue to develop their own practice, and the fact our staff are current practitioners inspires our students to achieve more, winning competitions both in Wales and internationally. We boast Artes Mundi winners, a Venice Biennale Welsh representative and Top 50 ‘New Designers’ at the South Bank Centre from among both staff and students. The University’s commitment to the creative, performing and visual arts is renowned and it has earned an enviable reputation for the calibre of its graduates. Many of our graduates’ designs appear in homes and on catwalks; their art works are also exhibited and published in books and they are being seen performing in the nation’s theatres, concert halls and on TV screens, as well as working behind the scenes as directors, production managers, editors, technicians and producers. The University’s many networks include collaboration with individual artists and organisations, giving students excellent opportunities to engage with others who are involved in the development and the promotion of the Arts.

Opportunities for Students Our students help with galleries, arts organisations and theatre companies, with many employing our graduates. It is not just those graduates who stay local developing the arts scene - graduates who have worked in London, New York and across the world and then come back to the area, bringing their wealth of knowledge and expertise, are also fuelling a flourishing creative industry in Wales.

Facilities There are excellent facilities on the University campuses and we regularly welcome touring theatre companies and professional performers. Students from the School of Performing Arts are involved in many productions throughout the year as part of their busy curriculum, with as many as 15 major productions taking place over the academic year in Welsh and English on campus, on tour, and in a variety of unexpected locations. Art and Design, Film and Media, and Theatre Design and Production students exhibit regularly at the University, Coleg Sir Gâr and at art venues around the region and in London.

Trinity Saint David Choir

Wales International Academy of Voice

The Trinity Saint David Choir gives students the opportunity to develop their vocal talents in concerts and competitions and there are also opportunities for soloists to develop their performance skills. Practice sessions are held through the medium of Welsh, but don’t worry if you don’t speak the language - there are plenty of people to help you - but be prepared to sing in any language, Welsh, English and others. Already the choir is making a name for itself and has appeared on TV programmes and achieved success in national competitions.

In Cardiff and London, the Wales International Academy of Voice delivers an extensive range of operatic concerts with an annual gala event at The Wales Millennium Centre being a highlight. Guest artists include Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Wynne Evans, Catrin Finch and the Academy’s Director, Dennis O’Neill.

Arts in Action

The Arts in Swansea

For the past eight years, Swansea’s Faculty of Art & Design has also run the popular Saturday Art School. So far more than 500 children and more than 550 adults have attended free courses in Drawing and Painting, Textiles, Printmaking, Photography, TV/Video Production, Fashion, Graphic Design, Stained Glass and Ceramics. Students get involved either by being employed as tutors or teaching assistants or through work placements and volunteering.

This year is also the 16th anniversary of the Arts in Action Residency Scheme. Coordinated by the faculty, the programme delivers up to 17 arts projects annually in regional primary and secondary schools. To date students from Art & Design or Humanities have delivered more than 170 individual projects in a variety of media including textiles, photography, book illustration, site-specific fine art, theatre costume and design, printmaking, ceramics, glass and graphic design.

In Swansea, a range of creative events and performance work can be seen through’ Creative Bubble’ which acts as a showcase for arts practitioners and students, and our students regularly take up opportunities to exhibit their work in a variety of venues including the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea Grand Theatre, Taliesin Arts Centre and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery (currently undergoing a multi-million pound redevelopment).

The vibrant arts scene at the University means there is plenty for you to enjoy. Full and part-time students are involved in art exhibitions, theatrical productions, creative writing events and musical concerts either at the University or in regional arts centres and everyone can get involved during their time with us. So, whether you are a performer, artist, designer or simply a spectator, UWTSD is great place to enjoy and participate in the arts.

From prestigious events like LOCWS International to Arts in Health and Community projects, working on external community projects with a variety of groups and organisations is as integral to our programmes as business and industry engagement. The range of settings is also really broad with students delivering projects and workshops in hospitals, schools, community centres – even in train stations and nightclubs. The University has a long history of working in partnership with the ABM University Health Trust to provide opportunities for a variety of projects in local hospitals and various healthcare settings. Illustration students created murals at Morriston Hospital's Paediatric A&E, Singleton Hospital Oncology Department and Singleton Hospital's Day Surgery Unit. Photography students delivered a project on the theme of Positive Images of Old Age as part of their external major project. Students from all disciplines engaged with the trust on a major multi million pound development scheme at Cefn Coed Hospital that involved the construction of new intermediate care units and facilities on the site. Students worked with staff, architects and designers to integrate internal and external art works into the design to enhance the patient environment.

Dylan Thomas Centenary Celebrations The year 2014 sees a very important anniversary for our region, with the centenary of the birth of one of our most famous sons â€“ writer, poet and playwright Dylan Thomas, who studied during his school days on the site of our Mount Pleasant Campus in Swansea. The University is at the heart of the celebrations of his life and work, running a special International Summer School and a series of other celebratory events. The University was also pleased to announce an inaugural series of Dylan Thomas International Awards for Poetry and Glass Art as part of the celebrations. If you are competitive and enjoy the camaraderie of being in a team the studentsâ€™ union, across all our campuses, supports a large number of student societies catering for sports teams playing in regional British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions.

Swansea and West Wales offers a gateway to an unspoilt area of wild coastal countryside to rival any other. The Gower Peninsula offers wonderful beaches for walking and watersports. Along the Swansea and West Wales length of the Wales Coast Path - the longest continuous coastal path in the world - students can access a broad range of surfing and water sports spots.

Our social sporting groups also organise informal activities and competitions plus there are some award-winning outdoor sports venues to explore in the region. Move inland and there are world-class mountain bike areas such as Afan Forest Park near Swansea with more than 62 miles (100km) of trails across 39 square miles (64km2) of woodland. Further west, mountain bikers can explore areas such as the Doethei valley, Carmarthenshire with natural free riding featuring one of the longest stretches of singletrack in the country and Nant yr Arian, in Ceredigion, which has three great trails across exposed moorland, with tight, twisty singletrack through woodland. For climbers and mountain lovers the region offers an expanding network of indoor climbing centres and some of the best natural hill walks and cliff climbing in the UK. The region also offers and ideal base to explore the mountainous regions of Snowdonia and the Brecon beacons.

Support While You Study Here are just some of the support services on offer our students.

Study Support At the beginning of your course, you will receive a basic introduction to study skills and information technology. In addition, drop-in and study skills sessions are offered to students who require support with their coursework. Such support includes developing effective study strategies, tackling assignments, preparing presentations, essay writing and preparing for examinations. Support for students with Specific Learning Differences (for example, dyslexia, dyspraxia) is also available. This includes screening, initial assessment, one-to-one support, adjustments to examination arrangements and IT training. Student Services works closely with the Libraries and Learning Resources Centre in providing learning support. Additional resources are available on the Universityâ€™s virtual learning environment. Academic staff also support you during your course and time at the University. The type of pastoral support offered varies according to your particular course. This support aims to ensure you are given individual attention from your tutors, to enable you to discuss issues that are specific to your learning.

Part-time Students and those Returning to Study Deciding to study at university is a very exciting step but it can also seem quite daunting if youâ€™ve been away from education for some time. There are many reasons why people decide to return to education and these can be for professional or personal reasons. Whatever your motivation, youâ€™ll be in good company as we have a high percentage of students returning to study. While part-time students and those returning to study or with other commitment do face certain challenges, we believe you can take these in your stride with the right support. Trinity Saint David has an excellent support system in place for all of our students ensuring you will get both academic and pastoral support as and when you require it. Our student mix is extremely diverse and includes all ages and backgrounds, and many of the things you may be concerned about will also be common to many students.

Counselling Services The University’s Counselling Service offers a high level of confidentiality and privacy to students who wish to discuss any matter of concern. Some students want only a single session, although many prefer to have a short series of sessions. Students use the free Counselling Service to talk through a wide range of issues – personal and academic. No difficulty is considered to be too small, and the counsellors endeavour to provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

Mental health advisory services The University employs three part-time qualified mental health advisers who can provide support to students with mental health issues. Our mental health advisers are supported by a team of mental health mentors.

Disabled students If you require additional learning support or have a Specific Learning Difference, we can provide assistance to help you on your course, where reasonable and practicable. If you have a disability, we would encourage you to inform us as early as possible in the application process, so that we can discuss your specific needs. We can also arrange to meet you to discuss your needs at Open Days and Interview Days. The University also provides a comprehensive screening process for specific learning differences, help with applications for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), and one-to-one support for students requiring extra tuition. We also have a range of specialist technology to help with your studies and specially adapted rooms in our Halls of Residence.

Medical services We encourage you to register with a local medical practice when you arrive at the University. The University works collaboratively with St Peter’s Surgery in Carmarthen, the Lampeter Medical Centre and the Brunswick Health Centre in Swansea in providing healthcare provision for our students.

Support for Students from Care The University has been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark in recognition of our commitment to care leavers in higher education. If you are entering University from care, you can be assured that we will offer the necessary support and information. This support is available while you are deciding what or where to study, continues through the university application process, and is ongoing once you have started your course. Help and information is also available if you are someone who is advising a student from care. There is a named contact within Student Services to support care leavers on each campus.

Chaplaincy Your period at University can be a time of searching for values and meaning that will enrich and underpin the whole of your life. There are many opportunities to explore and celebrate your faith through the various activities organised by the Chaplaincy team. The Universityâ€™s Chaplains can provide support for students to explore their faith, as well as a range of other issues, including providing confidential guidance and help in solving problems and concerns. The Chaplaincy Service works closely with all denominations to ensure the beliefs of all members of the University are supported.

Chapels and Prayer Rooms There is a chapel on both the Lampeter and Carmarthen campuses where services are held daily on weekdays. The chapels are open for prayer, meditation and quiet throughout the day. There is also a mosque and a Pagan Circle on the Lampeter Campus, a prayer room on our Swansea Campus and there are plans to develop a prayer room on the Carmarthen campus.

DISCOVER our Learning Facilities IT Support and Facilities The IT & Systems team is responsible for the management of a range of computer resources that are made available to help you with your studies. You will be provided with your own network login account which will give you access to the Universityâ€™s Virtual Learning Environment, the World Wide Web and a Microsoft Office 365 email account including 10GB of email storage. There are a number of strategically situated IT facilities on all campuses. They provide access to PC and Apple Mac computers

Open Access computer facilities are also available 24 hours a day on the majority of campuses. There are also Service Desk support desks on all campuses providing expert support, advice and guidance on any IT queries you may have. Student rooms in campusbased halls of residence all have wireless connectivity for those students seeking to use their own devices such as PC, Mac or games consoles. A large number of halls also have wired internet connectivity as

Library and Learning Resources Service The Library and Learning Resources service (LLRS) includes the libraries, learning zones, special collections and archives.

Carmarthen and Lampeter The Library on the Carmarthen campus is a large open space building which is home to a wide range of books, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, newspapers and journals to support the learning and teaching activities of the University. It contains a number of PCs and wireless access is also available throughout the building. The Carmarthen campus is also home to The Quad which has comfortable seating, PCs, study spaces with wireless access, dedicated rooms for group work as well as an outside seating area, all aimed at providing a modern and relaxed atmosphere in which to study. There is also an opportunity to enjoy a Starbucks coffee and light snacks while you work. There is also a separate quiet study area on campus for those who prefer to be away from the hustle and bustle of campus life. The newly refurbished Library on the Lampeter campus is a three-storey building which houses at least 275,000 books and

journals plus DVDs and newspapers. The library on the Lampeter campus has a range of different areas for study including areas for silent study and group study. PCs are available for use on one floor and wireless access is available throughout the building. It is also home to the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives, a unique collection of more than 30,000 volumes printed between 1470 and 1850 (including 69 incunabula) as well as eight medieval and 100 post-medieval manuscripts. The University library is committed to providing high-quality electronic information via the Internet, and maintains subscriptions to a variety of educational databases, e-books and e-journals. The University’s library information portal, WorldCat Local, searches the whole range of library materials and also enables the renewal of items out on loan, both on and off campus, over the Internet. Laptops, Mac books, Kindle Fire tablets and DVD players are available to borrow for use off-campus. Subject Librarians offer information and

Swansea On our Swansea campus you will have access to any of our four libraries which are conveniently located across our sites. Although each library caters primarily for the study requirements of the University Schools/Faculties in its immediate area, all facilities are available to you, regardless of your particular study programme. Our friendly and approachable library staff help you find the information required for your studies. Your subject librarian is available to provide assistance with any queries you may have, as well as to deliver information skills training and support. You will also receive a comprehensive introduction to library resources and services at the beginning of the academic year. There is an online library catalogue which allows you to search for books, journals and other print resources as well as providing you with the opportunity to renew your loans, or reserve items which are not immediately available. You can also access the catalogue via a mobile app. We also offer a wide range of resources online, including access to thousands of electronic journal articles and many e-books which are available to you from the library web pages. You will be able to search and access most of these online resources from any ‘offcampus’ computer, simply by providing your University network login details. Academic staff from the University are involved in projects which make a real difference to society, from the Coastal and Marine Research Group in the Faculty of Applied Design and Engineering whose work addresses the effects of climate change on our coastal environments, to the Rural Alliances project in the Faculty of Business and Management which has helped rural economies adapt and flourish through rapid times of Change. As a student at UWTSD youâ€™ll benefit from real-world research insights that feed into our teaching, and from being part of a global learning community committed to making a positive impact on the wider world.

Marine Mammals Research Dr Rhian Jenkins and her team have been carrying out studies on Harbour porpoise populations since 2002, establishing a baseline of distributional data in Swansea and Gower. Students contributed to the data collection. More recently they have been involved in the LCRI (Low Carbon Renewables Initiative) continuing with baseline studies and impact assessment on offshore marine renewables on marine mammal populations, undertaking consultancy on the Environmental Impact of the proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon development.

Archaeological Research and Consultancy The School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology at the University’s Lampeter campus has an international reputation for its research. Students benefit from this research and the University’s long-running collaboration with the nearby Strata Florida site by participating in fieldwork there. The University’s expertise is highly sought after and our commercial arm, UWLAS Archaeological Services, provides a range of professional consultancy services in environmental archaeology for clients in public, private and voluntary sector organisations, as well as providing support for academic research projects at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and other universities worldwide.

Project Enduro Project ENDURO is designing and manufacturing a prototype four-wheeled mountain bike predominantly for use by disabled people. The project is managed by Calvin Williams, from Gower College Swansea, in collaboration with the University, and is supported by the Welsh Government through European Regional Development Funding.

Discover Excellent Facilities Our Swansea campus is spread across a number of dedicated centres â€“ all within walking distance of Swansea city centre. Each subject area has its own dedicated facilities relevant to the needs of students, from the workshops where our Formula Student racing cars are designed and built to the art and design studios where students have dedicated spaces to develop their ideas. We aim to have industry standard (or better) facilities for students studying on our programmes so that when they progress to employment they are able to thrive in their future careers. It was originally known as the South Wales & Monmouthshire Training College and was established to train teachers for church schools in England and Wales. It later became known as Trinity College and subsequently Trinity University College before becoming the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

It blends an historic University (founded in 1822) with all the facilities and technology necessary for 21st century learning. With a long and distinguished academic tradition in the Humanities, the campus today is home to a range of undergraduate courses in the subject areas of English, History, Archaeology, Chinese, Classical Studies, Philosophy and Religious Studies, as well as less familiar areas, such as Anthropology, Publishing, Ancient Civilisations, Psychology, Ancient Egyptian Culture, and Creative Writing. We are able as a campus of approximately 1,000 full-time students, to offer a learning experience that is radically different from other more impersonal large-scale Higher Education institutions. All students have a personal academic tutor throughout their time at University, to help advise and guide them, and each School has its own welfare officer to provide support where necessary.

You will be taught by lecturers in small teaching seminars, typically by the second year in groups of between 15 and 25 students. You will get to know your tutors by their first name, as they offer advice on your work and progress, and they in turn will get to know you as an individual. You’ll work with others in small groups. But you will also engage in your own

research and projects, on a topic of your choice, with guidance from tutors. You will have the opportunity to take up a range of extra-curricular activities and student societies, from all manner of sports teams to Medieval Battle Re-enactment, thus becoming part of the most engaged University student body in the country.

Discover Great Facilities The campus can boast one of the best collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts and early modern printed first editions in the country, held in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives. Its special collections amount to some 30,000 volumes, printed between 1470 and 1850, which our students help curate as well as preparing display materials. The recently refurbished Main Library offers hi-tech learning support and study areas, in addition to its collection of 275,000 books and journals. There are two dedicated computer suites, a dedicated MAC laboratory for GIS survey software, language studies, and our courses on Digital humanities, and we have four different Archaeology

laboratories covering all manner of forensic and environmental study. In order to support your studies, a range of integrated student-facing services, from finance and accommodation to learning support, Faculty office and Registry services, have been housed in the iconic Canterbury building, opened in 2012. Between lectures and seminars, students can refresh themselves at the 1822 Starbucks café, or the Refectory or Student Union cafe and bar, in addition to the multitude of cafés in Town.

DISCOVER Lampeter Discover Student Life at Lampeter The University is located at the heart of the historic market town of Lampeter, itself surrounded by the beautiful Cambrian mountains of rural Wales. Running through the campus is the river Dulas whose banks in summer host a patchwork of student barbecues, picnics and quiet reading. In this historic and beautiful environment, Schools look to embed their learning experience through a variety of different field trips and visits to local castles and ruined abbeys, to the Roman gold mines at Dolaucothi or to the cathedral city of St Davids and much more besides. Closer to home, the town provides a warm welcome to its students and is in turn a vibrant centre of student activity, able to cater for all tastes in terms of shops, supermarkets, pubs, fast food, cafĂŠs (notably Contiâ€™s cafe which makes its own ice-cream), and a small theatre. Nowhere better underscores this collaboration than the local town museum, a venture run jointly between the University and the Local History Society, where our students can work alongside local volunteers to gain valuable first-hand experience of the heritage sector.

As well as providing University-wide representation, TSDSU is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS), meaning that our students also have representation at a national level and within Wales through NUS Wales.

Socialising The entertainment that is provided by the SU is high quality, diverse and value for money; we try to cater for everyone’s tastes with a mixture of live music, DJs, comedians and entertainers. It all starts during the Freshers' period at the beginning of the academic year which is packed with a variety of entertainment and provides a great opportunity to meet new friends.

Activities The SU is affiliated with the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) league. Every Wednesday, our sports teams compete in various leagues to become the BUCS champions. We also have a number of societies that cater for a variety of interests and activities. If you have an idea for a new club or society it's also really easy to set one up, just find a few others that share your interest and pop in to see us - not only is this a great way to meet new like-minded people, but running a club or society looks great on your CV.

Welfare & Support We have dedicated Welfare Officers in the SU, who are there to provide support to students on an individual level as well as campaigning for improvements in student support facilities. Anything from personal wellbeing to problems with accommodation, academic matters and so on can be dealt with by the Welfare Officer. No problem is too big or too small. This means that from the minute you arrive there’s someone here to help you out with any problem that you may encounter during your time at University. Levels of Qualifications Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) - Level 4 A Certificate of Higher Education is a Level 4 qualification and is equivalent to the first year of a full-time honours degree programme. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 120 credits. The successful completion of a Certificate of Higher Education can lead into the second year of an appropriate Foundation Degree or an honours degree programme.

Diploma of Higher Education (Dip HE) - Levels 4 & 5 A Diploma of Higher Education is a Level 5 qualification and is equivalent to the first two years of a full-time honours degree programme. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 240 credits. The successful completion of a Diploma of Higher Education can lead into the third year of an appropriate honours degree programme.

Foundation Degree (FdA/FdSc) - Levels 4 & 5 A Foundation Degree is an employment-related qualification at higher education level. It is designed to equip individuals with the higher-level skills and knowledge that not only meet the needs of the employer, but also offer the opportunity to develop personally and professionally. It is partly workbased and projects and assignments relate to individual’s role within the workplace. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 240 credits. The successful completion of a Foundation Degree can lead into the third year of an appropriate honours degree programme.

Higher National Certificate and Diploma (HNC/HND) Levels 4 & 5 Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas are designed to be work-related and vocational in nature. What sets HNCs and HNDs apart from a bachelor degree is that the foundation of both qualifications is to ensure that students receive skills and knowledge for a career in a related industry. These qualifications can be completed within two years if full-time study is undertaken. For students with personal or professional commitments there is an option for students to complete both qualifications on a parttime basis.

Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BSc/BEng) - Levels 4, 5, 6 A Bachelor’s Honours Degree is Level 6 qualification and normally requires three years of full-time study. The majority of programmes are modular, and therefore are available on a part-time basis, either during the day, or during the evening and occasional Saturdays. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 360 credits.

Integrated Master’s Degree (MDes/MEng) – Levels 4, 5, 6, 7 An Integrated Master’s Degree is a Level 7 qualification and normally requires four years of full-time study, at least one year of which is at postgraduate level (Level 7). To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 480 credits.

Accounting and Finance Studying accounting or business and finance provides you with extremely valuable skills and knowledge to help you build a career in organisations of all sizes, or to start an enterprise of your own. With strong links to business, our career-led courses have an excellent graduate employment record and one of the highest graduate start-up rates in Wales. The accounting programme gives you the specialist skills necessary for a range of career opportunities when you graduate, while business and finance is more general and provides a hybrid mix of broad business skills allied with specialist accounting and finance skills. The flexibility of study on the programme empowers students to gear their studies to their career ambitions and personal circumstances. We’re renowned for our friendly, flexible, and studentcentred approach to teaching and learning, and offer you the opportunity to specialise in areas you develop a particular interest in as you progress through the course. Ancient Civilisations Ancient Civilisations From Greece to China, or from Egypt to Mesoamerica, or from the Romans to the Celts, the University offers a wide range of programmes that explore the breadth of civilisations from around the globe. The interdisciplinary nature of our courses enables us to introduce you to an exciting array of ancient cultures, going beyond the more narrow focus upon ancient Rome and Greece to examine a far wider spread of ancient civilisations and peoples. You will explore the variety and diversity of ancient societies through their archaeology, their texts, their histories and mythologies, in a series of linked and inter-disciplinary modules. Museum trips and research projects will allow you to investigate these societies and cultures at first hand, and will help you explore the process by which understanding of the ancient world is acquired, interpreted and then communicated, either in visual displays and exhibitions or through written sources. Students will enjoy a personalised form of study by choosing their own path of study, adopting either a broad generalist approach to the ancient world or pursuing a path more focussed upon their own interests. By drawing upon the research strengths from different

subject areas and from across the Faculty, students are able to examine ancient civilisations through a variety of modules on themes such as Ancient Religions, Hieroglyphs and Texts, Funerary Beliefs in Ancient Egypt, Towns, Tombs and Temples, Water and Society in Latin America or Conceptualisations of Life and Death. In their final year students will have the opportunity to pursue a significant research project of their own, on a topic of their choosing. This research they will undertake with help and support from tutors. All our students will have the opportunity to undertake field trips and visits, which in the past have involved study trips to Athens, Rome and Istanbul. Through a collaboration with a local museum and its collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts, students will have the opportunity to work on a display and exhibition of these objects. All students will have the opportunity for international exchange, or working closer to home in our library special collections and archives, and in the local museum.

Ancient History

For those students with a passion for the ancient world, Ancient History provides an opportunity to explore the political, military and social history of the Greco-Roman world, along with the main cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. Whether you are enthusiastic about warfare, religion, social issues or the great leaders and thinkers of the ancient world, our Ancient History degrees provide the opportunity to delve into the cultures that have shaped the western world for two millennia. Seize the opportunity to study how Rome grew into an empire, how Sparta became the legend that it is today, how religion shaped everyday life two thousand years ago, why Alexander conquered the known world and human imagination, or pursue your own interests in the ancient world through our independent-study modules. `Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of human societies and cultures in all their richness and diversity. Anthropologists are interested in anything and everything that humans do, whenever and wherever they do it - from body modification practices among remote tribal groups in Africa to the use of online social networking sites such as Facebook in contemporary Western societies. The Anthropology staff have wide-ranging research interests and as a result we cover an extensive array of thematic and geographical areas in our teaching programme. This gives students a real insight into the human condition. We also have a unique approach to teaching Anthropology – we recognise that practical, first-hand engagement with ‘other’ cultures is the best way to understand anthropology, and if you choose to study with us you will be given plenty of opportunity to experience what it means to be an anthropologist. Indeed, Trinity Saint David is one of the few places where undergraduate students are provided with a practical training in anthropological research methodologies in addition to the theory which is integral to any academic qualification in anthropology.

Archaeology

Archaeology Archaeology is the study of the human past through an examination of physical remains such as stone tools, pottery and bones, through to buildings, structures, monuments and landscapes. It attempts to reveal how contemporary societies, other past societies, and our own society are organised and how we interact with our environments and landscapes. You will engage with theoretical and ethical issues such as heritage and tourism, cultural politics and environmental change, as well as participate in annual fieldwork which over the past few seasons has taken place at the spectacular Cistercian monastery and hinterland of Strata Florida, a few miles north of the campus in the Cambrian mountains. You will have the chance to learn in small groups, in laboratories, workshops, seminar rooms or in the field, on a broad range of topics such as Battlefield Archaeology, PostExcavation analysis, Human Evolution, Medieval Castles, Nautical Archaeology, Towns, Tombs and Temples, Forensic Archaeology and Humans and their Environment. Archaeology is one of the most active, research intensive academic Schools within the University. In the 2008 National Research Assessment Exercise 50% of its research work was judged to be world-leading or of international standing. The quality of research feeds through into teaching that is cuttingedge, enthusiastic and innovative. You will learn with experts in the field; indeed they often participate in the ongoing research projects of the tutors and lecturers themselves, such as the award-winning excavation in search of the mythical Tregaron Elephant. The University also offers a spread of Archaeology programmes based on and around specialist interests. For example, alongside the single honours Archaeology programme sit the programmes of Archaeology of Egypt and the Near East, Nautical Archaeology, Environmental Archaeology, Archaeology Professional Practice. You may also combine a passion for Archaeology with the study of another subject. Archaeology and Anthropology is a popular and stimulating combination that draw upon each disciplinesâ€™ strengths since archaeology is progressively more interested in ideas about society, whilst anthropology today looks at the past as well as the present. Architecture and Built Environment The University has extensive and long-standing expertise in the area of the built environment. Studying Architecture and built environment subjects at University of Wales Trinity Saint David provides you with valuable skills, knowledge and expertise to help you build a successful career in the sector. There are a wide range of programmes which enable you to specialise in key areas such as sustainable construction, building surveying, property management and renewable energy. Sustainable development is a key driver for the sector across all built environment professions. Sustainable development is therefore a core concept embedded across modules and also addressed explicitly within a dedicated module on all of the architecture and built environment programmes. When considering the built environment through a sustainability lens, the need to create sustainable communities and thus sustainable places to live is a key consideration. Art

Art Are you a creative person who likes to experiment with ideas through visual expression? At the core of our Art programmes is a desire to explore how you as an artist can express your ideas through a variety of visual media. Students may choose to study Art in one of two locations, the Dynevor Campus within the City Centre of Swansea or the Carmarthen Campus within rural West Wales. On the Swansea Campus students may choose to study one of three pathways - Fine Art (Combined Media), Fine Art (Painting and Drawing), Fine Art (3D and Sculptural Practice). The Faculty staff and visiting artists who teach on the programmes will encourage you to develop your own personal visual language through your chosen media. The Fine Art studio spaces are animated places where lively discussion includes the relationship between concepts and the appropriate means of expressing these materially and visually. At the start of the course you will learn technical skills through a series of workshops that will give you the confidence to utilise the medium most suitable to realise your ideas, as is appropriate for contemporary fine arts practice. As the course progresses you are encouraged to evolve your own themes and approaches and become increasingly self-directed. Studying Fine Art at UWTSD Swansea equips graduates with the skills to enter a number of career paths. Recent graduates have gone on to become visual artists and curators in their own right, winning the Wales Artist of the Year award and curating and exhibiting internationally. Some have initiated visual arts spaces such as Elysium and Red Door, while others have pursued careers in teaching, lecturing and arts administration. Others have pursued residencies and postgraduate courses, including at the Royal College of Art. On the Carmarthen Campus students may choose to study Art and Design or Art Practice pathways, which include Community, Health and Wellbeing and Environmental Art. Students may choose to study through the Welsh language if they wish. Studying art through the medium of Welsh provides students with the opportunity to study the visual language of art and design in a supportive and nurturing bilingual environment. BA Art and Design/BA Celf a Dylunio is a degree where the development of multi-disciplinary skills is encouraged in a unique environment where the Welsh language is at the heart of the creative culture. This programme is particularly suited to the student who wishes to explore and integrate different aspects of art and design, 2D and 3D work, and digital processes, into their professional development. A broad range of artistic, decision-making and communication skills will be developed throughout the degree and will be

adaptable to the contemporary workplace. The course fosters a professional outlook on personal self-expression, enterprise and the culture of art and design. BA Art Practice is the creative art component of the Art Practice degrees pathways that are taught in combination. Students studying on these degrees will share 80 credits of a 120 credits in any given academic year. The student will study the remaining 40 credits in Community, Health and Wellbeing or Environmental Art. Students will develop the essential skills to become a creative art practitioner with a specialism in community practice or expertise to work in positions of health and wellbeing or to engage with environmental art. The BA Art Practice (Community) allows for the development of creative art skills and exploration of the role of the community practitioner. Art in the community is often integral to the work of creative practitioners with artists frequently being called into schools, to engage on community projects or to hold workshops alongside an exhibition. Interdisciplinary skills in art practice and in community engagement are underpinned by theoretical ideas allowing the development of creative potential suitable for the contemporary community practitioner. The BA Art Practice (Health and Wellbeing) course provides the chance to work on strong practical skills in order to become a creative art practitioner with expertise in Health and Wellbeing. Engagement with multi-disciplinary practice will allow the development of practical and specialist skills. Students are actively encouraged to engage with the development of knowledge of health and wellbeing, planning, processes and practical skills, and to develop and explore aspects of their degree to foster the essential skills for employment or postgraduate study in the field. The BA Art practice (Environmental Art) promotes the discovery and application of practical creative skills with a focus on Environmental art. Skills are practised in supportive studio, workshop and site-specific environments, underpinned by theoretical and critical knowledge of contemporary visual culture. Throughout the degree an awareness of placing objects within environmental spaces and the exploration of environmental impact will be undertaken. In addition to our Fine Art and Art Practice degrees we also offer a degree in Curatorial Practice and Writing for the Arts and a range of other programmes in related areas, such as surface pattern and textiles, film and video art, visual communication and glass. Art & Design Foundation Diploma The Foundation Art and Design course provides the basis for the study of art and design. This makes it the preferred route into specialised study within higher education. The programme is predominantly visual and practical, with elements of written work. The course is structured to develop students’ understanding of concept, contexts and making, and to develop the individual voice of each student. The Foundation Art and Design course provides the right environment and expertise to make an informed choice about the next step. This might be a BA degree course within art and design, or another specialist area, vocational training or employment. In recent years UWTSD’s Swansea Foundation Art and Design Course has become one of the most successful in the UK with an outstanding record of placements and pass rates. The busy studios, in a dedicated space at the heart of Swansea’s city centre, provide a friendly, enthusiastic atmosphere where students can develop work and gain confidence. The Foundation diploma course offers the time and space to discover where individual students’ strengths lie, to challenge and confirm skills and abilities, and to successfully identify future directions and careers. The staff team will give you support, guidance and expert tuition throughout the year, and will help your decision-making at every stage. The course is taught through projects, workshops, lectures and seminars, supported by regular tutorials and group critiques. The programme consists of three stages: Stage One - This is diagnostic in nature and enables students to identify their potential and their own preference for specialist areas of study. Students experiment with a variety of materials and methods and are introduced to the five main areas of study: Fine Art; Visual Communication; Contemporary Textiles; 3D Studies; and Lens-based Media. Stage Two - Students carry out research and produce a personal portfolio of work in their chosen specialist area to support their application to undergraduate study and other progression routes within our University and other leading institutions. Printmaking; Product Design; Sculpture; Stained Glass; Surface Pattern; Textiles; Theatre Design; and Video. Stage Three - Students complete a major project that they present for assessment and certification in the form of a public exhibition held at the end of the course. All three stages of the programme are supported by field trips to galleries and sites of interest locally and in major cultural centres, such as London and Amsterdam or Paris. Students progress on to a variety of degree courses in universities throughout the country and many stay on to study at UWTSD in Swansea and Carmarthen.

Foundation staff stay in touch with many ex-students, and some have returned to take part in the Faculty Artist in Residence programme - an opportunity for graduates to work within the Foundation course, using their specialist skills to support teaching. Artists in Residence from all courses within the Faculty exhibit together during the year and have access to equipment and facilities.

Automotive

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has for many years offered programmes designed to develop and prepare students for a career in the automotive industry. The University led the way by becoming the first to offer a Motorsport engineering degree in 1998 and is well regarded by the industry. This was followed in 2000 by our Automotive Design programme which has forged close links0 with leading UK automotive designers. The University offers a wide range of automotive programmes including both engineering and designfocused courses. Our automotive engineering programmes are all based on the fundamental philosophy of supporting sophisticated and high level analytical work with practical, hands-on engineering activity. Our automotive design programmes focus on those human and emotional design factors which inspire new and conceptual forms of vehicles. There are numerous laboratory and workshop areas available to support students in their work, as well as engaging student projects. We believe having these facilities enable us to offer a unique experience to those studying here. Our range of automotive engineering courses include niche motorsport, motorcycle and automotive engineering, all of which provide our students with the chance to develop analytical engineering skills while focussing on their application to real world problems. To increase the studentsâ€™ understanding of the industry and to enhance their learning experiences, the university has numerous industrial collaborations in place. These collaborations feed into individual and group project work that the students undertake as part of their course and give them additional experience in developing their engineering skills. Our students have an excellent record of employment when completing our courses, aided by our strong links with industry and motorsport heritage. Our aim is to empower students with the engineering knowledge, practical skills and confidence which ensure that they are attractive to potential employers. Our

expanding portfolio of Automotive and Transport Design programmes offers unparalleled opportunities for students to study vehicle design. This can be done as a pure subject or in combination with computer visualisation, enterprise or marketing. As a University we are well known for our friendly, flexible, and student-centred approach to teaching and learning, and offer our students the opportunity to specialise in areas in which they develop a particular interest as they progress through the course. Many of our programmes are accredited by professional bodies such as the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE). Links with these bodies, as well as automotive industry associations, allow student networking opportunities and strengthen industrial links. Our automotive programmes are delivered on the Swansea campus, through the school of automotive engineering and the school of industrial design. Our campus includes dedicated workshops, test labs, machine shops and specialist engineering equipment, as well as numerous computer labs to support simulation and design. Our Automotive and Transport Design programmes are housed in the new ÂŁ14m ALEX Design Exchange, part of Swanseaâ€™s vibrant Arts and Cultural Quarter.

Automotive

The University has a dedicated track and test facility colocated at the nearby Pembrey Racing Circuit, which enables students to undertake evaluation of their Motorsport projects. We are one of very few UK Universities to have this type of facility and the only one in Wales. In addition to their main programme of study, all degree students at UWTSD also have the opportunity to gain an extra qualification, the Professional Certificate in Employability Skills, which is aimed at ensuring you are work-ready and employable on graduation at no extra cost.

Business and Management

Business and Management The University offers a wide range of courses which include business and management skills, either as the core subject or as part of a programme of study related to another subject or profession. Studying business and management-related subjects provides you with extremely valuable skills and knowledge to help you build a career in organisations of all sizes, or to start an enterprise of your own. With strong links to business, our career-led courses have an excellent graduate employment record and one of the highest graduate start-up rates in Wales. We offer generalist courses in business management and management and leadership to give you the broadest possible range of career opportunities when you graduate. We also have specialist programmes in key business fields such as accounting and finance, marketing, human resources, information systems and entrepreneurship, along with degrees related to specific industries such as leisure and tourism, sports, public services and events. We’re renowned for our friendly, flexible, and studentcentred approach to teaching and learning, and offer you the opportunity to specialise in areas you develop a particular interest as you progress through the course. Several of our programmes are available on multiple campuses, with the majority of specialist business courses delivered at Swansea Business School, our dedicated campus building at the heart of Swansea’s city centre. Chinese Studies

If the 20th century was the American century, then the 21st century will be known as China’s century. China is the most dynamic, diverse and influential society in the world today. Its economy, cultural impact and military strength reach to all parts of the globe. Yet China is also one of the world’s most important civilisations with a rich cultural and literary heritage It is a region that once far out stripped Europe in terms of new technology, science, fresh ideas, trade and economic organisation, food production and innovation, and which stands poised to do so again. As a result China makes for a fascinating and deeply rewarding subject of study at undergraduate level. The University offers three different types of undergraduate programme: a fouryear Chinese Studies programme; a suite of joint honours with either a focus on language study or history and culture (Chinese Civilisation); and, a three-year Chinese Studies programme. As part of these interdisciplinary programmes, you will learn the Chinese language and study Chinese culture from a wide variety of perspectives. Individual modules will examine China’s economic development, its history, media, politics, philosophy and religions, both in ancient and in modern times. As part of this degree scheme, you will also have the opportunity to visit China and experience Chinese culture first-hand. Students on the four-year Chinese Studies programme

will spend a full year in China. Those on the three-year Chinese Studies programme are able to spend a semester of study in China. This option is also open to joint honours students. All students have a further chance to apply for short-term language courses in China and scholarships administered by the Centre for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute, one of only eleven in the UK. As a result of the skills and insight gained undertaking a degree in Chinese Studies, graduates are well-placed for careers in a wide range of sectors, including business and the public sector. Alternatively you may study Chinese Studies in conjunction with another subject in the form of a joint honours programme or a major/minor combination. Major/minors you can take with Chinese Studies could be Heritage Management or with Education Studies, a programme that gives you important insights into the world of teaching and education, thus providing an invaluable route for those interested in teaching as a profession.

Classical Studies

Classical Studies For students who love ancient literature and mythology, Classical Studies is the perfect degree to study Greek and Roman mythology. Classical Studies will explore the literature and culture of the ancient world, from Homer’s great epic heroes to the everyday lives of ordinary people. With an extensive suite of modules from among the favourites of literature for three millennia, Homer, Vergil, Aristophanes and Euripides, to less well-known gems, Statius, Ovid, Martial and Apollonius, our Classical Studies degrees give you the opportunity to discover the wonders of ancient literature and how it has shaped our understanding of the ancient world. Starting in the first year with ancient mythology and its influence in both the ancient and the modern world, a Classical Studies degree covers topics from religion and magic to women and the family in the Greco-Roman world. In lectures, workshops, seminars and one-to-one sessions, you will be taught by experts in the field, exploring a variety of topics from the Romans’ expression of love and desire to the ancients’ favourite recipes. Take the opportunity to learn new, and improve existing, skills through a wide range of assessment methods in our employability-centred curriculum. Experience other cultures, ancient and modern, through our integrated field trips to the ancient world and our study abroad options. If you wish to study in-depth ancient Greek and Latin, then you should consider our language-based degrees. The BA in Classics is the best option for those who have studied Latin or Greek to A level, as it will give you the opportunity to work at advanced level with ancient texts in-depth and in detail. If you have not had the opportunity to learn either Greek or Latin before but would like to do so, then you could consider the BA in Classical Studies with Latin, or the BA in Classical Studies with Greek. Alternatively you might combine your passion for classical studies with your other interests. Explore ancient political and military history through the BA in Classical Civilisation. Find out how ancient thought has shaped modern philosophy through the BA in Classical Studies and Philosophy. Computing The University offers a wide range of courses, which include computing and information technology skills, as part of a named programme of study. We also have specialist programmes in key fields such as software engineering, computer games development, robotics and intelligent systems along with degrees related to specific industries including web development, mobile app development and computer networking. We are the only CISCO Academy in Wales and offer computer network students the opportunity to study for CISCO industry-based qualifications as part of their undergraduate studies.
