Trinity Prep Magazine | Summer 2023 A Publication of the Trinity Preparatory School of Florida We knew we had started something special when we opened our doors in 1968 to 173 students. In time, we created an educational institution that would have it all – a dynamic curriculum and college guidance program that prepare students for a life of leadership, a winning athletic program, an outstanding fine arts program, and the space to grow spiritually. From this, we have developed something priceless along the way: our wonderful students, amazing faculty and staff, prepared alumni, supportive parents and grandparents, and friends – that have all worked to make an impact in our world. Building for Tomorrow
Embarking on the latest construction project in anticipation of the school’s 55th birthday. By Alex Podchaski, Chief Technology Officer & Romina Jannotti, Ph. D., Science Department Chair Ad Astra per Aspera: To the stars through challenges. As our students and their generation prepare for their own challenges, Trinity Preparatory School is building the foundation that will help them achieve their goals. Consistently ranked as one of the top STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) schools in the state, Trinity Prep is reaching new heights in a variety of ways. A number of projects, activities, and programs are underway that will continue to develop our Saints well into the future.
Nochur Sankar Science Center The recently-announced Nochur Sankar Science Center will become the new home for many of our math, science, and applied science courses. As the first new building on campus in eight years, it is the first stage of the new campus strategic plan that will further enhance the Trinity experience. According to its rendering, the soon-tobe-constructed two-story building will encompass more than 35,000 square feet and include flexible classroom spaces, science labs, and common areas for collaboration. The Nochur Sankar Science Center will link to the Student Resource Center (SRC) through a plaza that will serve as the entrance to the quad and the rest of the campus.
Developing Science Scholars Scholarship is not relegated only to the day-to-day classroom experience at Trinity Prep. Dr. Elmarie Mortimer, the Carole Denicole Endowed Science Chair and upper school science teacher, has developed the “Saints Talking Science” lecture series, driven by annual themes. Students can interact with scientists around the world who are leaders in their fields, communicating directly to gain insight into current academic research. They are then prepared to represent Trinity Prep in scientific competitions at the regional and state level. The annual Dr. Nelson Ying Exposition serves Orange County as its regional science fair, where applicants are encouraged to pursue projects that can help humanity through independent scientific research. Trinity routinely places in multiple categories, with the 2023 class bringing home two first-place awards, two Genius Olympiad awards, and two Grand Prize awards. Students compete in The Science Olympiad, which is the premier national STEM competition, focused on various fields of science (including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering). This team is organized by Dr. Scottie Smith. The future of STEM demands a deeper level of thinking and collaboration in the field of science. As Trinity Prep continues preparing students for emerging careers, the focus remains consistent on igniting a flame of curiosity, and widening their lenses to think bigger and do better through hands-on lessons, global outreach, and academic competition.
Fundamental Science - New Perspectives Underpinning the development of new technologies is a grounding in the fundamental sciences: biology, chemistry, and physics. Classes in these disciplines allow students to build a solid science foundation while taking the opportunity to develop higher-order skills in each specific field: Biology - Our life science curriculum begins by teaching students fundamental principles, with a strong emphasis on cellular biology, genetics, and evolution. This serves as a stepping stone toward comprehending the interconnectedness between components of living organisms and the ecosystems in which they exist. From microscopy to biotechnology, our curriculum emphasizes both classical and contemporary scientific S UM MER 2023 | 27

settings. Proficiency in handling equipment and chemicals is crucial for all courses, including Forensic Science/CSI, offered by Carrie Lopez. This course, part of the Malone School Online Network, highlights the investigative process, empowering students to become informed citizens capable of critically evaluating forensic evidence in various media and legal contexts.
Chemistry - Chemistry, the central science, provides a comprehensive exploration of the matter that surrounds us. The emphasis of concepts like atomic structure, bonding, and reactions is reinforced through hands-on laboratory experiences, fostering the practical skills necessary for student success in research and the ability to address complex challenges in our rapidly evolving world, where innovation and sustainability play vital roles. Collaborating with the University of Central Florida (UCF), Dr. Romina Jannotti and her students recently investigated the effectiveness of training with chemistry lab equipment in real-life and virtual
Physics - The laws of physics are the canvas God laid down on which to paint his masterpiece. Our objective is to provide a profound qualitative understanding of classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics, enabling students to understand natural phenomena and recognize the significance of physics in their everyday experiences. In advanced studies, a student can choose to explore the application of mathematics to solve real-world problems. Through our Physics of Art curriculum, students combine the principles of physics with the creative aspects of art to explore the scientific underpinnings of various art

Competitive Programming & CyberSecurity Trinity Preparatory School has a strong history of developing students with advanced capabilities in computational problem-solving. Under the direction of computer science teacher Susan Frederick, they compete regularly against their peers at competitions sponsored by the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, Stetson University, and the American Computer Science League (ACSL). Corporations, including Lockheed Martin, have also sponsored several annual competitions over the years: CodeQuest for advanced algorithmsolving competitions, and CyberQuest for advanced cybersecurity challenges. In the winter of 2023, a Trinity Prep team won the Orlando CyberQuest competition, making it one of the top 11 teams in the country competing at Lockheed Martin sites nationwide. This has led to internships in the area of cybersecurity, giving students real-world experience before they embark on their college careers. The school will participate in the U.S. Air Force Cyberpatriot competition this fall and is planning to implement a CyberSaint boot camp in the summer of 2024.
Esports
forms, gaining valuable insights into technological advancements and global issues.
Robotics The path to the future will be paved by robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). Trinity has participated in the “FIRST” robotics competitions since 2012, competing with the FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) in the fall and the FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC) in the spring. Teams are composed of students who take classes in robotics as well as those whose schedules are otherwise full but who can participate before and after school as time allows. Working with the math department, we have invested in rovers and drones that can be programmed with the Texas Instrument calculators used in our science and math classes. These devices will be used in support of robotics and with other classes to introduce computational thinking into classrooms. Starting in the fall of 2023, Trinity students will be able to work on Sea Perch and Sea Glider systems, creating underwater remotely-operated, autonomous vehicles.
Since their creation in the 1950s and 1960s as ways to experiment with computer graphics and programming, video games have grown into a 357 billion dollar industry. Bringing the gaming industry into the school setting, scholastic esports provides the option to learn teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills across three components: PC gaming, console gaming, and mobile gaming. Trinity Preparatory School has participated in the Sunshine State Esports League since the spring of 2023. As we continue to expand interest at both the middle and high school levels, we plan to supplement our Computer Science curriculum with a game development track, coordinating with Social Sciences and English to create a culture and story for our students’ games and then providing the programming support to animate their ideas.
Building for Tomorrow After losing their father, Nochur Sankar, Shyam Sankar ’00, Ravi Sankar ’08, and their family graciously came to Trinity Prep to discuss how best to memorialize and honor Nochur. Thanks to their generosity with the lead gift, we are officially “Building for Tomorrow.” The Sankar building is the first step toward creating the future for our STEM students. We invite you to follow along with us on our website as we document the growth and development of our latest project. S UM MER 2023 | 29
Innovation in the Classroom Looking for new ways to engage and challenge students. By Dr. Stephanie Dryden, Director of Learning and Instruction Our teachers continually look for new ways to engage and challenge students: programming calculators to fly drones, designing challenges, amplifying genes with PCR machines, multiliteracy games that teach the structure of narrative and problem solving, new art techniques, socratic circles, writing workshops, video chats and pen pal exchanges with sister classrooms in France and Spain, French exchange program, and much, much more. Our teachers continually look for new ways to engage and challenge students. Students in grades 6 through 12 have opportunities to explore, to learn, to lead. Whether it’s a chemistry lab that has students using Vernier Probeware technology to understand rates and energetic reactions, or a game that has students using their reading and 30 | T R I NI TY PR E P M AGA Z IN E
critical-thinking skills to solve a mystery, our teachers get kids to observe, think, reflect, and communicate with each other, with teachers, and with the larger community.
One way we challenge students is through experiential or service learning. One way we challenge students is through experiential or service learning. This past year, Madame Spallone’s AP French class worked with the founder of Friends of Tabelot, a not-for-profit in Nigeria which works for the empowerment of
the semi-nomadic Tuareg tribe. The students in class emailed with the founder of the organization, then interviewed him via Google meet--all in French--and finally coordinated a jewelry sale to raise funds for the organization. The proceeds went to support the education of Tuareg children. Not only did students use their French language skills and learn about the francophone culture in Nigeria in a real-world setting, but they also developed their leadership skills by educating their peers and then running the fundraiser at Culture Fest. Other teachers work to incorporate inquiry-based learning into their lessons. With this approach, teachers scaffold learning experiences that give students an opportunity to solve problems and reflect on the larger relevance or applicability of
what they’ve learned, as well as to practice key skills--reading, critical analysis, collaboration, etc. In our social science classes, teachers help students understand the complexities of studying the past by bringing different voices into the classroom through the study of source documents-maps, books, documentaries, political cartoons, and artifacts. Flying drones is on the agenda for some of our students this year. As a result of a collaboration between our computer science and math departments, students will have the opportunity to program drones using their calculators! The computational and problem-solving skills needed to work drones are significant.

During my first year at Trinity, I focused on learning the internal and external community, including the culture, the city, and how the school continues to emerge as one of the best schools in the country. I have been fortunate to have various touchpoints directly with the students as a 6th-grade boys coadviser/team member; served as a thought partner to the upper school student leader, who organized the beloved Culture Fest; and seen the school through the eyes of local, national, and international organizations. Furthermore, I have led and assisted the school in executing its values to become increasingly attractive, inclusive, and welcoming to a diverse group of faculty.
What are you looking forward to this year and in your role?
Tell us how you feel about wearing the Trinity Prep Blue and Gold.
This school year presents numerous opportunities to further the strategic goals. I look forward to supporting our new employees' transition to our learning environment in partnership with the school community and continuing to build on our health and wellness initiative.
I feel a sense of community and that I am part of something bigger than myself. I think that is what we are looking for and are fortunate to find now more than ever at Trinity.
Describe what your day looks like in your position at Trinity Prep. My day starts with 6th-grade advisory, including team meetings and supporting our parents as they navigate Trinity. After advisory, I start working on recruitment, based on our current openings, in partnership with key personnel. Also, as a supervisor, I have periodic meetings with the Trinity Preparatory School Fellow(s), who are recent college graduates or individuals interested in pursuing careers in secondary education. Then, depending on my schedule, there are various meetings regarding academic planning; curriculum; and ongoing initiatives with school administrators and personnel. Trinity Triple Crown Auction & Soirée Celebrating Trinity Prep's commitment to excellence and community. Every now and then, an event comes along that demonstrates the power of community and collective support. This past April, this was the case with Trinity Prep’s 17th biennial auction gala, “Trinity Triple Crown Auction & Soirée.” The evening not only celebrated the school's commitment to excellence but also showcased the tremendous impact of collaboration. Parents, alumni, local businesses, faculty, and staff rallied to support and enhance the Trinity Prep student experience. Organized by 2023 Auction Chair Lisa Martyny, the event comprised over 600 Trinity families, demonstrating the true testament to the strength and commitment of the Trinity Prep community. Months of meticulous planning and flawless execution went into making the auction event a resounding success. The Derby-themed evening kicked off with live music, a delicious spread of southern fare, and attendees decked out in their best Derby-day attire. The attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the evening, vital to creating an enjoyable and memorable experience for all. Beyond the glamor, the auction is the school’s singlelargest fundraising event. Over 632 items were collected and auctioned off throughout the fun-filled evening. Having raised over $198,000, the school is empowered to invest in cutting-edge technologies, enhance innovative programs, and expand global experiences. With the next fundraising event on the horizon, Trinity Prep and its supporters eagerly await the opportunity to once again showcase their commitment, passion, and unwavering belief in the power of education. Back at the Farmers’ Market, the All Alumni event Friday night, with special guest Susan Lilley, started a great weekend that included a gathering of Coach Andy Denicole’s former players and other alumni for a spirited game of softball Saturday morning. Saturday evening we introduced our Chi Rho Society at the on-campus celebration of the Class of ’73’s 50th reunion and inducted the Class of ’73 as members with a pinning ceremony. JOSEPH ALEXANDER “JAY” ST. JOHN Former Headmaster September 29, 1948–May 14, 2023
Joseph Alexander "Jay" St. John, beloved educator and coach, died Sunday, May 14, 2023, after a long illness. Born on September 29, 1948, in Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, Jay grew up in Old Greenwich, CT, before attending the Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ, and Boston University. Jay began his career in education at The Fessenden School in Newtown, MA, where he shared his passion for knowledge, his infectious sense of humor, and his incredible zest for life with his students and athletes. After Fessenden, Jay taught at the Allen Stevenson School in Manhattan before moving to Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, FL, where he served as history teacher, football coach, Dean of Students, and Head of School. Jay met his wife, Beth, in Winter Park and they married in 1989 and had their daughter, Kate, in 1991. After several successful years at Trinity, the St. Johns moved to Davie, FL, where Jay led The University School, and then to Southern Pines, NC, where he served as Head of School at The O'Neal School. A longtime member of The Episcopal Church, Jay led Emmanuel Episcopal Day School in Southern Pines before moving to Dothan, AL, where he served as Head of School at Houston Academy, followed by Frederica Academy in St. Simons Island, GA. Jay and Beth retired to the Tampa area in 2016. Jay St. John loved music, movies, literature, and adventure. He was an avid traveler who greatly preferred experience to material wealth and took great pleasure in visiting foreign countries and new locales with Beth, Kate, and countless friends. Jay had a keen sense of humor, an indefatigable optimism, and a tremendous positive spirit. He loved a good story, was a gifted raconteur, and had a genuine curiosity about people that allowed him to make friends wherever he went. As a teacher, coach, and administrator, Jay is remembered for his unwavering ability to see and encourage the potential in every individual. He believed in a well-rounded education that allowed students to explore their interests and discover their strengths, and he was a relentless champion of the underdog, inspiring legions of students to aim higher and achieve more than they thought possible. A faithful friend, a loving husband, a proud father, and a truly exceptional man, Jay will be sorely missed by those who were privileged to know him. Jay St. John was preceded in death by his parents, William Black St. John and Kathleen O'Connell St. John, and his brother William. He is survived by his sister Kathleen St. John of Peekskill, NY, a nephew and three nieces, daughter Kate of Brooklyn, NY, and wife Beth.
