Patrons of the Arts is a parent organization whose purpose is to promote, support, and enhance the arts at Trinity Preparatory School.

The arts include eight disciplines: Visual Arts, Photography & Film, Forensics, Creative Writing, Band & Percussion, Chorus, Theater, and Orchestra.

We encourage you to attend one of our monthly meetings—it’s one of the best ways to learn about us.

PATRONS OF ARTS PRESIDENT Welcome to the 2023-2024 season of Fine Arts at Trinity Preparatory School! I would especially like to extend a warm welcome to our new families. We are so excited to have you here! And to our returning families, thank you for your enduring support. We cannot wait to work alongside you again this school year. We have a lot to look forward to together!

The Patrons of the Arts support our Fine Arts students, faculty, and staff in countless ways. Our activities range from organizing volunteers for our many concerts and performances, art shows, receptions, and more, to providing financial support for masterclasses, instruments, special field trips, and forensics or vocal competitions just to name a few. We welcome back and highlight our Fine Arts alumni through the Arts Hall of Fame program and further enhance our students’ exposure to the arts through the Danhof Series, when world renowned artists are brought to Trinity Prep to perform for our community. Above all, we are our students’ biggest fans and advocates as we support them through rehearsals, practices and of course, in the audience when they perform on stage and shine!

The Fine Arts are an inspiring and necessary aspect of EVERYONE’S experience at Trinity Prep whether as a performer or audience member. Thank you again to our current supporters and if you have not already, please join the Patrons of the Arts. Go Saints!

LETTER FROM

FINE ARTS CHAIR Welcome to the show!

Whether you are here for a concert, play, or musical, I thank you. An audience matters so much. A performance means that countless hours have gone into the preparation of what you are about to see. Much joy comes from the rehearsal process: bonds are created, connections are made, friendships blossom, and indelible memories are formed.

But without you, our young artists don’t receive that magical energy that happens when performers and the audience share the same space. “A single performance is affected by how the audience participates, acts, and reacts, which results in the beautiful truth that no audience will ever see the same show twice. This ephemeral nature of the theater is what makes it so magical.”

Being in an audience is an exercise in listening. As someone who has been involved in the Central Florida theater community since the 1980s, I must acknowledge the fact that it is becoming harder and harder to get audience members to sit still, unplug, and listen for two or three hours–it takes commitment. But without an audience, the performing arts cease to exist. As an educator, I want to teach students to value and love the arts. Some of our students will choose to go into the arts for their livelihood, but the rest of them need to see the importance of attending live performances.

It provides so much more than entertainment. Live theater gives us the opportunity to reflect, empathize, evaluate, and explore ideas, stories, and other cultures. Music can soothe, inspire, and heal us. I truly hope that our arts students will carry with them a lifelong love of the arts that will make them lifelong audience members. You are setting a wonderful example to them by being here for this event. Please enjoy the show and keep coming back for more!

HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Trinity Family, I am extremely pleased to welcome you to our 2023-24 school year.

The fine arts are an essential facet to the brilliance of a successful education, and we are proud that many of our faculty and students completed the 2022-23 school year with major accomplishments in so many areas.

Orchestra: • • • •

Leah Flynn ‘25 performed on a national PBS broadcast.

Four orchestra students made All-State ensembles.

Masterclass was held with violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins.

Our “How to Eat Like A Child” Thespian group received a Community Engagement Award for their work with local Boys and Girls Clubs.

We received an Outstanding Ensemble Award for the musical “How to Eat Like a Child.”

Two of our musical productions participated in the Applause Awards through the Dr. Phillips Center for the Arts and received many nominations.

Our production of Lauren Gunderson’s “Silent Sky” won the Critics Choice Award at the District 3 Thespian Festival.

An audition masterclass was held with Broadway professional and TPS alum, Amanda LaMotte.

Acting masterclasses were held with professional director, Joseph C. Walsh.

Stage combat workshops were held with professional fight director, Bill Warriner.

NEW: Coming in 2023-24, middle school students will now have their own Thespian Troupe!

Art: • Students participated in many art shows.

• Eva Chong won “Best of Show” at the Winter Park Library Art Show. Merit awards went to Victor Fang and Austin Yuan.

• The Winter Park Art Festival Award of Excellence went to Austin Yuan.

• FL Art Ed Virtual Art Assessment: Award of Excellence went to Austin Yuan and Yishan Cheng.

• Austin Yuan was an Arts for Life finalist.

• Middle School art won multiple awards from the FAEA Virtual Art Assessment and WP Sidewalk Art Festival.

Honors Advanced Band received good ratings at our very first district-level music performance assessment.

Austin Yuan was one of six percussion students in the nation selected for All Nationals.

Austin Yuan and Zixuan Chen were selected for All-State ensembles.

Three superior ratings were given to Bennett Marshall, Zixuan Chen, and Dehao Zhend for solo and ensemble performances.

We established a Pep Band with 12 students who performed at three football games, two pep rallies, two basketball games, and a regional volleyball game.

The band had 26 performance opportunities.

AP Studio Art 2-D Photography students exhibited some of their photographs at the City Art Gallery.

AP Studio Art 2-D Photography and Photo I and Photo II students had their photographs exhibited at the Winter Park Art Festival.

Our forensics team has been recognized nationally multiple times as a Program of Excellence in speech and debate. With twelve national out-rounds and a fifth-place finish in Dramatic Interpretation at the 2023 NSDA national tournament, TPS Forensics has continued its tradition of excellence and was named one of the Top 20 teams in the nation!

Trinity’s Visiting Writers series has continued to bring nationally celebrated and published authors to our campus. Last year, TPS hosted virtual writing workshops with authors Jeffrey Voccola (novel writing/fiction), Emily Lake Hansen (poetry), Matt Miller (poetry), and Ryan Rivas and Michael Wheaton (literary magazine publishing). The coming season will welcome writers, both virtually and in person, to present a variety of genres and topics, including screenwriting, poetry, playwriting, fiction, memoir, and publishing.

Our own students are writing and publishing their creative writing work on campus and beyond.

The 2022-23 edition of “Skylight,” our school’s literary magazine, continues to feature original writing and art from current students and recent graduates.

Trinity Prep’s other student publications are going strong. Students produced Volume 55 of the “Chi Rho” yearbook and earned a Gold distinction from the Florida Scholastic Press Association.

Our school’s newspaper, “The Voice,” boasted its largest student staff ever and earned accolades from all the major national and state scholastic press associations, including the National Scholastic Press Association, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and the Florida Scholastic Press Association.

We are extremely humbled and truly grateful for your support of our arts program. We wouldn’t be able to celebrate any of these successes without the support of our families and Patrons of the Arts.

While we’ve noted some pretty incredible achievements, we are equally thankful for the excellent instructors who help students develop their voices. Under the leadership of Fine Arts Chair, Janine Papin, every student at TPS learns to make a little magic and embrace the wonder that is the arts.

artsFACULTY MAURICIO CESPEDES is the new orchestra conductor at Trinity Prep this year. His training in orchestra conducting include The Juilliard School with maestro Mark Shapiro, and choral conducting at the Eastman School of Music with maestro William Weinert. Currently, he is the Assistant Conductor of the Orlando Philharmonic, Music Director of the Daytona Civic Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the Orlando Philharmonic Music Summer Camp. As an instrumentalist, he serves as principal violist of the Orlando Philharmonic. He has performed with notable artists such as Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Tilson Thomas, and members of the New York Philharmonic at the Millenium Concert at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York. Dr. Céspedes holds degrees from New World School of the Arts, Michigan State University, and Florida State University where he obtained his Doctorate degree.

Dr. Cespedes was named the “Everyday Hero” by channel 13 for bringing musical gifts to children’s hospitals, and retirement homes. Besides music, Mauricio holds a degree in Environmental Engineering and teaches Environmental Science at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

ERIN ARMSTRONG is beginning her second year as instrumental music director at Trinity Prep. She received her bachelor and master of arts degrees in music education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. At JSU, she was principal oboist in Chamber Winds and also participated in jazz band, steel band, and the Marching Southerners.

She received a graduate administrative assistantship, working directly with the University Bands department in orchestrating rehearsals, travel, scholarships, and day-to-day functions of the music department. Ms. Armstrong is teaching Beginning and Introduction to Percussion, Beginning and Introduction to Winds, Honors Trinity Wind Ensemble, Honors Advanced Percussion, and Blue and Gold band. She works alongside Mike Rogers who runs the TPS drum line and manages a performing TPS Pep Band to play alongside the drumline for various athletic events. She is passionate about music and loves to travel. One of her favorite performances was a memorial service on the USS Missouri in Hawaii on the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Ms. Armstrong resides on the space coast with her husband, Matthew, and cat, Georgia.

artsFACULTY IRINA ASHCRAFT has been teaching upper school art at Trinity Prep since 2003.

Originally from Latvia, Irina has made her home in Orlando ever since her arrival in the U.S. in 1999. She holds two bachelor’s degrees from Latvia–-one in world literature and one in fine arts--and received her master’s degree in art education at the University of Central Florida.

In 2017, Mrs. Ashcraft was the recipient of the June Hinkley Award of Excellence in Art Education, given by the Florida Art Education Association. In addition to teaching the love and appreciation of art to her students, she also actively pursues a career as an artist. Her works have been exhibited locally and worldwide, and her stellar auction sales record of oil paintings placed her among the most successful emerging fine artists on Sotheby’s Online Auctions from 1999 to 2003. She is also listed in the prestigious MAYER 2000/01/03 International Auction Records, a catalog that is often referenced by art agents and serious art connoisseurs. Her works are displayed in galleries, corporate offices, and private residences in the United States, the United Kingdom, Asia, and Europe. Irina loves to travel, make and savor great food, take nature walks, and paint in her studio, as well as enjoying time with her husband, James, and two daughters, Ally and Lilly.

artsFACULTY CHRISTINA CARTER holds a master’s degree in music education from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor’s degree in music from Belmont University. This is her 28th year of teaching and she is celebrating her 12th year at Trinity Prep. Christina teaches piano classes, Advanced Music Theory and Composition, Honors Choral Conducting, as well as directs the four middle and upper school choirs. Outside the classroom, she has assisted with recording projects as a rehearsal conductor, choral singer, and soloist. She sings as a soprano in the Bach Festival Choir of Winter Park and adjudicates for regional a cappella competitions. She has performed with many classical and contemporary artists over the years and spends time helping connect musicians in the vocal and choral community to spread the love and appreciation of choral performance. Christina has served on international research teams as developer/editorof published early music education curricula and currently writes as a curriculum developer for national education projects. She maintains a selective vocal and piano studio. In addition to music and singing, she loves to travel, arrange choral pieces, and spend time with her daughter, Kylee, and her husband, Chance.

MELANIE FARMER teaches English and creative writing, serves as faculty adviser for the Trinity Literary Society, Skylight Literary Magazine, and heads Trinity’s Visiting Writers Series. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The University of Central Florida and is a published author of literary nonfiction. She is the winner of a nonfiction Intro Journals Award from the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, and is the first author to be awarded the Hurston/Wright Foundation’s Crossover Award for Literary Nonfiction. Her chapbook, published by Burrow Press, was released in 2023, and more of her writing can be found in The Tampa Review and Split Lip Magazine. She also serves as a judge for the Florida Book Awards. This season, Ms. Farmer is excited to return to the TPS stage as a director. She directed her first play, Deathtrap, as a senior project at Trinity Prep. She holds a degree in theater from Davidson College with a concentration in directing, and has worked professionally as a director, assistant director, and new play producer at Hangar Theater, Dallas Theater Center, Lincoln Center Festival, and Arena Stage. Directing credits include: My Client Curley, WASP, and Wonder of the World at Davidson College and Tape at Dallas Theater Center. Assistant directing credits include: The Misanthrope, A Christmas Carol, Glengarry Glen Ross, Hello Dolly, Moonlight and Magnolias, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Taming of the Shew, Trouble in Mind, and more at various theaters. She has also worked as a producer on original workshop productions of Fun Home, P-valley, Right to the Top, and A Time to Kill, and has supported the work of professional playwrights Katori Hall, Amy Freed, Lisa Kron, and Janine Tesori as a new play producer. Her international theater experience includes assistant directing and producing with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Lincoln Center Festival, and The Gate Theater of Dublin.

artsFACULTY BENJAMIN GADDIS is the current director of forensics at Trinity Prep and the former assistant director of Texas Speech at The University of Texas at Austin.

A graduate of Bradley University and a finishing doctoral student in communication at the University of Texas at Austin, he brings an extensive background and approach to coaching individual events.

He helped to coach his Texas Speech team to over 40 national titles, including three AFA national team titles. A native of Chicago, he has technical training in improv and sketch writing, bringing these ideas into his pedagogy.

KIMBERLY GIOVANOLI is the new StageCraft teacher for Trinity Prep! Mrs. G. comes from a wide and varied background in the Arts and Theater with a degree in Musical Theater from Rollins College. Following college, she lived in Italy for seven years, studied art and fashion and helped assist in building an all aluminum 3 ⁄ 4 scale P-51 Mustang airplane. Back stateside, she met and married her wonderful husband, Tony, worked professionally as a makeup artist and costumer and volunteered on the board of many charity gala events including the Golden Gala, The Mennello Museum Fabulous Friends Gala, Kids Beating Cancer, and The Purple Gala to End Alzheimer’s. She is excited to kindle a love of theater and the arts in her students and looks forward to teaching them valuable life skills, such as using power tools, painting and sewing! Mrs. G has played many parts, but her favorite role so far is as mother to Grayson and Hayden, both Trinity students!

JULIA HREN is the new Assistant Director of Forensics at Trinity Prep, as well as an English teacher. Her undergraduate degrees are in theater and strategic communication from Butler University, and her master’s degree is in communication from Marshall University. Ms. Hren competed on Butler’s speech and debate team while earning her undergraduate degree and helped coach the Thundering Word Forensics Team at Marshall while working on her Master’s. Julia believes that speech and debate allows individuals to understand the world better and present ideas in a clear, concise and convincing way. These skills will serve students well as they move through the world.

artsFACULTY CABERBE JOSEPH is the photography teacher in the department of fine arts. He currently teaches Photography I, Photography II, Film Production, AP Studio Art 2-D Photography, Visual Foundation, and Yearbook.

Mr. Joseph holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in animation as well as a Master of Fine Arts in studio arts, with a total of 20 years of experience in photography. He is the Youth Arts Initiative Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, where he is responsible for all arts programming (fine arts, theater, poetry, comic book writing) agency-wide. Mr. Joseph is the co-founder of Lumiere d’Education Foundation. He is also one of the executive board members at Pine Hills Community Performing Arts Center.

VADIM MALKIN comes from a strong background in three-dimensional art. He began his foundations in art at an early age in Russia and continues to strengthen them in various arts institutions around the country and abroad. His passion for art, specifically sculpture and ceramics, has led to numerous art shows in Florida and places as far away as England, China, and Korea. These shows garnered him many awards, and his works reside in both private and public collections. Mr. Malkin has been teaching ceramics at Crealde School of Art for the past 15 years and at the school level for 13 years. He and his wife, Meredith, and children, Lev and Zoia, consider themselves lucky to call Orlando home, with its diversity of cuisines and cultures.

KYMBERLY MORELAND-GARNETT has taught at Trinity since 2000. She teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Art; Middle School Printmaking, Advanced Printmaking, and Visual Foundations. She is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Columbus, Ohio, where she studied printmaking and photography. She was also active in the student council and Botticelli, CCAD’s literary magazine. She earned her master’s degree in art education from the University of Central Florida in 2009, received the H. Benton Ellis Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009, was named the Florida Art Education Association’s Middle School Art Educator of the Year in 2010, FAEA’s June Hinkley Award of Excellence in Art Education in 2022, and the Columbus College of Art & Designs Alumni Arts Educator Award in 2022. When she is not at work or spending time with her family, she’ll be reading, quilting, baking, or planning a trip.

artsFACULTY JANINE PAPIN has been teaching theater at Trinity Prep since 2000. She has a master’s degree in theater/musical theater from the University of Central Florida and has been an active part of central Florida’s theater community since the 1980s as an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, and director. Janine was one of two teachers from across the nation to be named “2018 Inspiring Teacher” by the Broadway League Foundation Jimmy Awards. She received a fellowship from the Central Florida English Speaking Union and had the honor of studying at and performing on the stage of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London during the summer of 2015. In 2006 she was awarded the H. Benton Ellis Award for Excellence in Teaching. During the summers of 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2022 she took Trinity Prep students to London and Edinburgh to be a part of the American High School Theatre Festival at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ms. Papin enjoys sharing her abundant passion for the stage with her students. When she is not teaching or directing at Trinity Prep, you can find her performing on the stage of many local regional theaters.

KATHY SLAGE is the accompanist for the choral programs at Trinity and coordinates the middle and upper school chapel music. She also provides musical direction for the Trinity theater department. Ms. Slage studied music at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She enjoys working with students and professionals throughout the Central Florida community as an accompanist, vocal coach, and piano teacher, and is a staff accompanist in the music department at Rollins College and at First Congregational Church of Winter Park. She also enjoys working with Central Florida Vocal Arts and other local arts organizations. She has over 30 years of experience as a piano teacher and maintains a private studio and one at Rollins College’s Community School of Music. She performs and loves to explore all genres with her students: classical, musical theater, jazz, and pop. In her spare time, she is a vocalist and an occasional flutist. Her current favorite hobbies are gardening and permaculture.

creativeWRITING Excerpt from Adventures in Isakrous (A Future Novel)

As soon as I began reminiscing about my lost friend, something changed. The prince’s eyes turned glassy and his stare glared into the void of space, as if my words had evoked a distant memory. He stood there motionless, even after my lips had slowly drowned out their sound and had come to a close. My eyes met his, yet he didn’t seem to be aware of his surroundings, much less that I was glaring at him with every ounce of energy I had in me at that moment.

Gosh, staring is tiring.

There was a devastating fire of emotion in his eyes and a dark aura suffocated the air around him, luring my heart into unfathomable depths. My soul ached with warning, but I kept my glare strong.

“Hello?” I barely whispered, afraid of both receiving an answer and him not responding. I waved my hand over his deeply lost eyes. It took a split second for him to snap out of his trance, blink, and stare at me intensely in the eyes.

“What did you say her name was again?” His voice was laced with curiosity but struck my eardrums with an ominous, dark purpose.

My heart stopped at his tone. His stare seemed to melt my bones. What should I say? Would I offend him? Why was I running off with a prince? What was I thinking? Emotions flurried inside my head and my palms began to itch and sweat.

I laughed awkwardly. “Are you sure you’re alright, Your Majesty?” I peeped, anxiously waiting for his response.

“What. Was. Her. Name.” He asked again, clearly and smoothly, but his voice was veiled with a thin layer of agitation.

I froze. The way his eyes burned mine told me that he wasn’t playing around. I took a deep breath, and hoped this was the right course to take.

Surely a name couldn’t hurt, would it?

Yet something about this moment was important, I knew. There was suspense in the air, and one wrong move from my side could result in consequences.

The wind toyed with my senses, eerily blowing Prince Jackson’s hair towards a jagged palace.

A sharp, impenetrable fortress. His home.

I decided to play it safe.

“Mia.” I wisped shyly. “Mia is her name.”

“Is she from Airamine, the Wind Kingdom?” Prince Jackson’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head as he jolted towards me. His eyes interrogated my soul with intense curiosity, pleading for the truth.

I nodded, both perplexed and frightened of Prince Jackson’s sudden creepy questioning. I slowly backed away from the prince.

“Does she have a flying airship, an annoying pet cloud, and a golden bracelet that she’ll never take off no matter what the circumstances?” The prince pressed.

My face turned pale and my lips trembled with shock. “You know Mia?” I breathed.

How was that even possible? Princes didn’t mingle with peasants… especially not those from a kingdom hundreds of miles away…

Prince Jackson shook his head and repressed a relaxed sigh. “You see, that’s her problem.” His eyes stared into mine with sadness and… was that pity? “I may know her, but you certainly don’t.”

“I certainly don’t” like it when your eyes are invading my soul, Jackson.

“Excuse me? I-I don’t understand…” I gasped.

“Of course you don’t.” Prince Jackson bit his lip in quiet stillness. Everything froze. Even the playful wind seemed to die down. Things were almost too calm…

Uh-oh. Here comes the big truth bomb.

“No one does.”

creativeWRITING Cactus Genocide

When I was 13, I asked for succulent holders for Christmas. We had just moved into my new house and my mom finally allowed me to completely re- decorate my own room. I scoured the internet for ideas and finally came across the holy grail of 2019 room decor, hanging holders for succulents, and cati. The ones that kinda of levitate on your wall. And just in my luck, my mom was turning her black thumb into a green one which meant it was something she also had an interest in. It was a win-win situation. Plus cacti and succulents only needed to be watered once a week, it can’t be that hard. Wrong.

A couple of days after I received the holders, my mom took me to the local nursery to pick out three succulents or cacti. I chose two succulents, an aloe vera-looking one, one with buds on it, and a cactus with a pink flower on top. On the ride home, I strapped them into the seatbelt and even named them. I immediately planted them on my hangers and attached them to my wall. I was so excited to finally be responsible and have something of my own. My mom taught me the proper care for the plants and gave me a pipette to make sure they received the perfect amount of water. Not too much so they won’t overflow and not too little so they won’t dry out. For the first few weeks, I was doing great. They got watered every Monday morning before I went to school. But then every day Monday turned into every other Monday and soon enough my three plants were dried out.

For some reason, I was actually kind of sad. Not only was it depressing to have three dead plants hanging in my room but I was even sad that when I had to be responsible about my own thing, I failed. I failed at responsibility. And yes, I got discouraged for a while and I really considered not even trying again but then I thought, what’s the point of moping around? So what I messed up, that’s okay!

Instead of crying about it, I needed to learn from my mistakes and try again. That is exactly what I did. So although may Richard, Jackson, and Tim may rest in peace, Micheal, Buster, and John live on in their memory.
