WELCOME

Fresh from our knockout performance at the BBC Proms, this autumn sees a whole host of new collaborations and explorations.

Our dance programme highlights our partnerships with Candoco – whose new double bill includes a world premiere from man-of-the-moment Alexander Whitley – and with Greenwich Dance, as we jointly present Us Then, a brilliant new commission from Sarah Dowling and Kath Duggan inspired by Waiting for Godot. Excitingly, we’re turning our theatre into a cinema for a double bill of dance films from Trinity Laban alumni Andre Semenza and Fernanda Lippi, including their latest “cinematic masterpiece” Sea Without Shore. And film also features prominently in two wildly different yet equally engaging evenings in the company of the utterly brilliant and mesmerising Liz Aggiss and Zoi Dimitriou.

Once again our musicians are part of two of London’s biggest autumn festivals – the Royal Greenwich International Early Music Festival and the EFG London Jazz Festival. And this year, we’re also staging a pair of festivals all of our own: the Junior Trinity Festival at LSO St Luke’s, and the C6-H12-O6 Festival of Composition. Other concerts this term offer you the chance to hear fresh performances of classic repertoire – Beethoven Piano Sonatas, Mozart’s ‘Paris’ Symphony, and Brahms’ Symphony No 1 – and to discover brand new sounds in our Parallax VI multi-media event at the ICA and in our 80th birthday concert for the evergreen, ever-brilliant Diego Masson.

CANDOCO DANCE COMPANY COUNTERACTS: DOUBLE BILL OF WORKS BY HETAIN PATEL AND ALEXANDER WHITLEY “a fantastically smart piece” The Guardian on Let’s Talk About Dis

CounterActs: A new double bill combining mischievous questions and virtuosic performance.

Candoco Dance Company, the world’s leading contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled performers, has been creating acclaimed and cutting edge work for over twenty years. In this new double bill, Candoco presents commissions from two of the most exciting artistic talents working in the UK today.

Visual artist Hetain Patel’s Let’s Talk About Dis is a playful and intimate piece that builds on an exploration of the dancers’ personalities and bodies, interrogating questions of what identity is and how it is formed. With seductive charm, Patel challenges audiences to think beyond surface appearances, exposing hidden prejudices and absurd political correctness.

Alexander Whitley creates visually striking dance pieces, which incorporate sinuous and expressive movement articulations.

Set to a mesmerising score by composer Nils Frahm, this is a resonant and emotive piece performed with reckless flair.

George Jackson, Trinity Laban’s Junior Fellow for Conducting 2015 – 16, leads the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra and visiting musicians in a performance of Brahms’ Symphony No 1, a work of remarkable power, passion and unity.

The first in a series of two screenings from Trinity Laban alumni Andre Semenza and Fernanda Lippi, founders of Zikzira Physical Theatre. (See page 13 for details of Sea without Shore).

The first contemporary dance feature film to be shot in Brazil, Ashes of God merges the languages of cinema and dance. The critically acclaimed film, directed by Andre Semenza and choreographed by Fernanda Lippi, was shot by award-winning British Director of Photography Marcus Waterloo.

Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Ashes of God features a cast of consummate Brazilian dancers and a haunting soundtrack mixed by arguably France’s premier producer Kid Loco, featuring Boleros, music by René Aubry, Silver Mt Zion, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Lepo Sumero, amongst others.

The film was dubbed at Pinewood Studios, supervised by BAFTA and Academy Award® winner Glenn Freemantle.

Presented by Maverick Motion and Zikzira Physical Theatre.

LIZ AGGISS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL “…sheer outrageous confirmation of being alive.” Exeunt

At age 62, Liz Aggiss finally gives herself permission to do what she damn well pleases, better late than never! So batten down the hatches and prepare to meet the Grand Dame of anarchic dance in an irreverent and glorious solo show, in which Liz Aggiss IS The English Channel. Using her body as the medium through which to act out and act up, Aggiss becomes a conduit for willful women and a cunning connection to ‘the other side.’ She is a witty commentator on life, death and the pain, pleasure and paradox of the stage.

Choreography and texts (by Aggiss) are backed by contemporary and archive film, with knock-out musical numbers by Wevie.

Surprise guests are channelled into being.

TRINITY LABAN PRESENTS: RUBYTHROAT AND SHAPESHIFTER Monteverdi La Sestina (selection) Berio A Ronne Mozart Symphony No 31 in D Major (‘Paris’), K 297 Bernard Rands Madrigali Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin This evening’s concert sees the début of two new Trinity Laban ensembles, the vocal ensemble Rubythroat and the instrumental ensemble Shapeshifter, each dedicated to presenting eclectic programmes of music ranging from ancient to modern in combinations devised to surprise, delight and, perhaps, provoke.

Musical connections and reimaginings across the centuries link the works here, with Bernard Rands’ exquisite Madrigali giving a contemporary commentary on Monteverdi and Berio, and Ravel, in memoriam Couperin, reinventing musical models from the eighteenth century.

BA3 COMMISSIONED WORKS (PART 1) MIXED BILL Third year students on the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance programme have been working with leading choreographers Gary Clarke, Marina Collard, Lizzi Kew Ross, Tom Roden and Adam Rutherford during an intensive period of creative exploration and rehearsal. The result is an exciting and challenging programme of five new works performed by skilful and versatile dance artists in their final year of training at Trinity Laban.

TRINITY LABAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA DIEGO MASSON’S 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Diego Masson conductor Dutilleux Métaboles Talia Morey (TL student) Grey Bird ˇ Janáček Fiddler’s Child (Šumařovo díte) Shostakovich Symphony No 11 (‘The Year 1905’) Diego Masson’s distinguished career and his long, treasured relationship with Trinity Laban are celebrated in a concert in honour of his 80th birthday.

Diego’s enormous passion for the music of the twentieth century and to new work is encapsulated in this programme featuring Shostakovich’s epic symphonic meditation on the events of the 1905 revolution; Métaboles, by Masson’s illustrious compatriot, Henri Dutilleux, which explores the concept of metamorphosis in music; and Janáček’s rarely heard tone-poem, The Fiddler’s Child, which tells a characteristically dark Czech folk-tale. The Symphony Orchestra continues to commission exciting work from our student composers and this evening the programme is completed with a new piece from Talia Morey.

TRINITY LABAN CHORUS AND ENSEMBLE Dominic Peckham conductor Programme to include: Toby Young Love and Harmony Vivaldi Gloria in D RV 589 Following a triumphant performance of Carmina Burana last autumn at Blackheath Halls, exciting British conductor Dominic Peckham returns to lead Trinity Laban’s Chorus and Ensemble in another celebrated piece from the choral repertoire.

With its distinctive melodies and rhythms, Vivaldi’s most famous choral piece, Gloria in D, is a sacred work full of exuberance and joy. Two a capella pieces and Toby Young’s 2014 choral work Love and Harmony complete the programme.

A rhythmically captivating exploration of love and lossbetween two women at the fin-de-siècle, Sea without Shore follows an amorous relationship between two women abruptly cut short. Set in remote landscapes in rural 19th century Sweden, the film was shot in CinemasScope by award-winning British director of photography, Marcus Waterloo, and features a sound design supervised by celebrated Academy-Award® winner Glenn Freemantle (Gravity).

Post-produced at Pinewood Studios, the film was directed and produced by Andre Semenza and Fernanda Lippi.

SARAH DOWLING AND KATH DUGGAN US THEN A Laban Theatre premiere.

Two women, in a world imposed upon them, while away time. They manage, they flourish, they fail.

There is nothing to be done but they do it together.

Sarah Dowling and Kath Duggan, who met creating with Punchdrunk, have joined forces for the first time to create and perform Us Then.

These two artists have come together with a common desire to combine theatrical realism with the more poetic and visceral stuff of dance. Us Then takes its inspiration from Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot.

Beckett, when asked what his play was about, said 'It's all symbiosis.' Us Then takes this idea of symbiosis and the landscape of Godot to spark the creation of a new dance theatre work.

A Compass Commission presented by The Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership. Compass Commissions is a series of new dance works supported by Arts Council England.

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ ENSEMBLE AT EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL A CELEBRATION OF BRITISH CONTEMPORARY JAZZ COMPOSERS Directed by Mark Lockheart, the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble returns to Southbank Centre to perform in the EFG London Jazz Festival. This year’s programme shines a light on music by some of the leading British composers in contemporary big band jazz.

As well as featuring music from established composers such as Eddie Parker, Django Bates, Mike Gibbs, Mike Walker and Nikki Iles, the concert will also showcase music by the younger generation of exciting jazz composers including: Laura Jurd, Matt Roberts and Troyka.

JUNIOR TRINITY WINTER FESTIVAL Junior Trinity, Trinity Laban’s prestigious Saturday music department, returns to LSO St Luke’s with an action packed weekend of workshops and performances featuring talented students aged 10 –19. Over 250 young musicians attend each Saturday in term time at our campus at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Featuring five public concerts over two days, the Winter Festival includes performances from Junior Trinity's Chamber Choirs, Wind Orchestra, Big Band, Symphony Orchestra and Four Part Choir.

ZOI DIMITRIOU THE CHAPTER HOUSE What does it mean to be a creator, and what does it take to make (or remake) an art work in and for the digital age?

The Chapter House is an interdisciplinary dance piece featuring intricate choreography by Zoi Dimitriou coupled with video installation by Mark Coniglio, inventor of Isadora software and co-director of the group Troika Ranch.

This new perspective-shifting collaboration is a seductively ambiguous examination of the acts of performing and documentation. Dimitriou’s aim is to expose the processes and mechanics of creation by using digital media to record, re-construct and re-enact a live performance. In The Chapter House she’s inviting you to gaze back at the body of her work and discover how meaning can be revealed and transformed…

The Chapter House is commissioned by Trinity Laban.

WHEN MIDNIGHT STRIKES PRESENTED BY BA3 MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE Susan Raasay director David Randall musical director Musical Theatre students present a show full of laughs, tears and show-stopping songs.

New York, New Year’s Eve 1999 – the dawn of a new millennium – and Jennifer West’s intimate dinner party for close friends and family begins to fall apart upon the discovery that her husband has been having an affair. As the hosts confront their unravelling marriage, new resolutions, past mistakes, and an uncertain future merge into an explosive and life-altering evening.

When Midnight Strikes presents a remarkably accurate sense of the brittle gaiety of a New Year party, with all the tensions so often seething beneath the surface. Visit the apartment of Jennifer and Christopher West at Laban Theatre this December for a New Year’s Eve you will never forget.

PARALLAX VI MOVING SOUND: THE PERFORMER IN SPACE An evening of multi-disciplinary work that explores ideas of performance space and the movement within it. This movement may be interpreted as sonic, physical or visual, and include musicians, dancers and multi-media technologies.

A concert of 4-hands piano repertoire including Fauré's Dolly Suite, Op 56.

Formed primarily of Trinity Laban brass students, the band performs a selection of brass band favourites, directed by Stephen Maw.

Written in 1943, Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is a setting of six English poems on the subject of night. Written some sixty years earlier Dvořák's Serenade encapsulates an auspicious time in the composer’s life, a work full of charm, lyricism and exuberance.

Complementing the Serenades are new works celebrating the wealth of talent of our own composers, student Ben Pearson and professor Ken Paige. The programme is completed by Arvo Pärt's Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten.

Trinity Laban is the only conservatoire to have its own Chapel Choir. It offers 12 choral scholars the opportunity of an Oxbridge-style choral education, leading several into the professional choral world via Genesis Sixteen, the Monteverdi Choir apprentice scheme etc. In addition to the Choral Scholars, the Chapel Choir includes a number of other excellent singers.

Each season Trinity Laban students perform a wide range of concerts in the local community and further afield across the UK, including the following venues:

Directed by Ralph Allwood, the Chapel Choir sings during term time in support of the services of the Choral Eucharist (Sundays at 11.00h) and Choral Evensong (Mondays at 18.30h) in the Chapel, Old Royal Naval College.

In addition the Chapel Choir gives concert performances during the year with choral soloists chosen entirely from the Choir.

From one off taster sessions to weekly classes, courses, creative arts projects and music/dance collaborations, Trinity Laban’s Learning and Participation programmes attract participants of all ages, whatever their background or ability.

FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

FOR ADULTS

Trinity Laban’s wide range of music and dance opportunities for children and young people extend from fun activities to intensive training. They include weekly dance and music classes, holiday courses and creative ensembles such as Animate Orchestra and our Youth Dance Company.

We run weekly term time dance and movement classes for adults, one off music projects for the local community, and music and dance groups for older people. These are open to all, regardless of ability, who wish to take part in dance or music activities for enjoyment.

CENTRES FOR ADVANCED TRAINING If you are an ambitious and talented young person, Trinity Laban can support you to develop your creative and performance skills through Junior Trinity (for musicians) or Trinity Laban CAT (for dancers). Both recruit by audition, offer excellent training that supports young people to maximise their potential and offer bursary support via the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme.

FOR TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS From in school workshops with our experienced team to schools concerts and taster days at Trinity Laban, our offer for schools aims to enhance the curriculum.

We also create bespoke programmes for school groups and offer professional development courses for teaching staff.
