Whether it is the new student transitioning to high school or the returning student coming back in the fall, there is something wonderful about seeing the enthusiasm they have for their school.

Their energy is generated by the promise of opportunities found in rich academic choices, in athletics and extracurriculars all in a caring community centered environment. Although I have been a part of Trinity for more than 25 years, this year is special for me as it brings a transition of roles from Assistant Head of School to Head of School. I am honored and grateful to serve as Trinity’s fourth Head of School. As we craft our vision for the future, I am proud to be a steward of the Trinity experience which serves young people so well.

Dedicated teachers, spirited students, varied programs and a rich community combine here to create a welcoming environment filled with opportunity. Trinity draws from more than twenty different zip codes and our students have had highly varied experiences. All of our students get a fresh start as they enter school because we only do high school, and we do it right!

I see daily examples of students having remarkable experiences. I especially love it when students see how their individual paths merge with something greater than themselves. In these first steps into self-discovery and into a community that they are an integral part of shaping, they discover what it means to give back, to share their gifts and passions and to enrich the lives of others.

I see this in the talented wrestler who decides to take a music class, learn the guitar and then accompany the gifted vocalist at a Pach’s Place concert. I see it in the student who creates an original composition and gathers friends together to give up lunch to work the sound board for an afternoon concert. I see it happen with a student who decides to immerse himself in computer programming to combine the worlds of the technical and the artistic with an original video game creation, not only doing the programming himself but also collaborating with the artwork and the music.

These young people create a rich environment in our community for everyone to enjoy through their own experiences. Part of our daily life is the act of sharing. It is seen in the collaborative areas of our library with the student who creates a model of an architectural design using the 3D printer and works with nearby students who contribute to nuances of engineering, mathematical underpinnings of architecture and also thoughts about aesthetic beauty and

functionality. It is about the cross country runner who helps pilot a sustainable garden with the help of her student colleagues and a devoted faculty member going the extra mile. These are renaissance moments where a student recognizes the wonder found in all disciplines. I see wonder, a sense of accomplishment and acts of sharing happen in the courtyard, in Morning Meeting, on the playing fields and in the classrooms.

I believe our shared experiences create wonderful moments of selflessness among our students. The elite athlete who decides to try a new sport, not because she is good at it but instead because she knows the team needs a goalie. I see this in the busy student who gives up some of his own time to make sure another student’s IB Leadership community service project is a campus success story and on its way to becoming a fond life-long memory. Students, caring teachers and coaches here understand the whole, celebrate each other and lend support in our shared experience.

For me the simple moments are the most profound.

They are found in kindness, in empathy and a daily habit of both self and shared discovery, which makes Trinity such a wonderful place to be and each day in itself a discovery.

Shared Discovery A one-on-one interview with Robert A. Short, Trinity’s fourth head of school, about his deep commitment to the school’s past, present and future.

W

hat is your vision for the future of the school in ten words or less?

Creating opportunities and expanding paths of discovery for our students.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Collaborative. I like to listen. I consider myself a steward of the wonderful community we’ve created and wish to be ever mindful of what it takes to create this environment. I am excited about us going to the next level with our students.

What energizes and inspires you? e excitement found in wonder and discovery. Heroes are found in many forms. True, they come in the more ordinary forms of historical figures and athletic icons, but also the mathematician who sees a new pattern in nature, the musician who composes with a surprising twist that elicits a smile or the scientist who reaches for a dream and discovers through hard work and innovation a new way to prevent disease.

We create opportunities for students to discover paths and ways for them to make their unique mark.

I love that spirit of innovation, always trying to invent, learning from failures, and then improving upon things in a fearless way. At Trinity, risk taking is something that we teach informally, and it's a difficult thing to teach — whether it's getting up in front of a crowd to play guitar at Pach’s Place, or linking together some concepts that don't seem to be linked and saying, “what about this?”

What makes “Discover Your Path” such a meaningful and authentic phrase?

How important is collaboration here?

We live it, and it puts the students first.

We’re about ideas and innovation, which are both inherently collaborative.

Watching our faulty work with our students is illuminating. When a student is thoroughly absorbed in a teachable moment, then great education is taking place. I treasure moments with teachers who bring that passion to the classroom and are looking at ways to create frameworks for students to engage with each other and with other teachers in getting creative with design, but also with solving global issues.

What does it mean to “put students first?”

Putting students first is about forming relationships and connecting, and then working hard to provide frameworks that support students and nurture their natural enthusiasm. Everything we do here is about a core belief that we need to know the student, the person, the passions behind student, in order to be effective. It’s something that we do joyfully.

I love growing our existing programs to the next level as much as seizing opportunities for new paths for students.

You have been an educator for almost three decades. What exciting evolutions or innovations have you seen, and what bedrock principles have remained paramount?

I have been struck by how much information there is out there now on getting creative in the classroom. In my classroom it wouldn’t be uncommon for the students to be divided into groups and be involved in acting out a situation in scientific forensics, political negotiations or analysis of an ancient site and puzzling through what the civilization intended through their artwork. Students engaging creatively in the moment and using the newly learned content or framework is a very powerful thing.

Having said this, bedrock principles remain. Students need to know how to do research, how to write well, how to analyze, and how different disciplines approach the pursuit of knowledge. It is very important to me that students understand that disciplines are discrete in some ways but are also intertwined.

Students love connections; they give education a relevance to their lives.

Was there a moment that inspired you to follow a path in education? Were there influential mentors?

Once, I remember thinking “OK, my teacher is crazy.” e instructor was introducing a Chinese thought framework involving Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Metal to our class. I came into the

class expecting research journals and scientific papers, but what I came away with was a broad understanding of the power of metaphor. It was also a lesson in the timelessness of human thought; how patterns repeat and how models can be effective across thousands of years to describe how people behave, how institutions approach success and challenges. I also found the joy in seeing a framework’s strengths and weaknesses. is remains to this day one of my most memorable classes.

What about a moment from your first days or years at Trinity?

When I was a very young teacher we tried something that was new and different: teaching math modeling with a computer in the classroom. It opened up a whole new world for us and the students. It was so much fun to see the students appreciate that there is a mathematical underpinning to the universe, and that math is a language that describes what English, French or Spanish cannot.

When you talk to alumni, what do they tell you about the enduring value of the Trinity experience? What do they still cherish and draw upon?

Morning Meeting comes up a lot. We go and visit our alumni at university and they really miss Morning Meeting. ey also share how they valued the trusting atmosphere and how this environment helped them be more

responsible in their approach to college life. Consistently, they remember how they formed relationships with teachers which helped them work more closely with college professors. Our collaborative spirit continues at the university level.

Time and time again, I am reminded by alumni of how unique the Trinity community is — how close of a community we are, how committed we are to knowing each student as a whole person and how mindful we are of appreciating and analyzing different perspectives. Schools often get criticized for not being the real world, but I would argue that whenever a student leaves Trinity and says ‘the world ought to be more like the community of Trinity,” I would argue that it’s okay to create a world that’s better than the real world.

When you hire a teacher, what do you look for in a candidate to know he/she will be a good fit?

We look for teachers who are studentcentered, are passionate about their work, have broad gifts to offer the school and who see the creative, artisan nature of teaching.

We look for someone who can connect with young people and build a rapport.

It is so important to know a little bit about each student — and hopefully a lot. To me, there’s a clarity created when you create trust with kids. It invites them to come along in the sense of discovery. While pacing and content are important, they are not the priority.

Students are the priority, We look for passion: passion about their subject area; passion for being part of the shared discovery in any classroom, passion for guiding young people.

I like an environment where teachers can experiment and be creative with teaching. One of my fundamental principles is that we can all arrive at the same destination by teaching young people in different ways. Different teachers have different personalities, and there’s not just one, magic method. at’s why I like to think of teachers as artisans, as opposed to technicians.

We educate in the classroom, through chapel, through extracurricular activities, conduct, honor and on the athletic field.

Finding teachers who understand that a great education consists of all of these areas is important. I call these the “moments in between.”

The Future is Bright Moving Forward with Trinity’s fourth Head of School — By Kathy Ashby Merry

The Board of Trustees was presented with a significant challenge when Trinity’s long-serving headmaster, Tom Aycock, announced his intent to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

Arguably, the most important duty of the Board is to select, support, and supervise the Head of School. How would we find a new head who understands and cherishes the unique culture that exists at Trinity while simultaneously bringing infrastructure to a growing organization and encouraging innovation in a highly competitive environment?

Talk more about the “moments in between.” Why are they so important?

Classrooms are important, but here the classroom is found everywhere. It is found in the way we learn through Morning Meeting about community, about character and about appreciating each other. It is found in the student music that fills our courtyard and our concerts. It is seen in the educational value of our student-led honor and conduct programs. e moments in between are where we learn that we are part of something larger than ourselves.

Is there a place on campus that is particularly special or meaningful to you? How so?

Powell Library is very special to me.

Libraries have always been about discovery, and ours continues to evolve. I have enjoyed seeing students on campus do a double-take and see what we have created there.

With these goals in hand, the Board established a 13-member search committee.

The committee designed a thorough and rigorous selection process with additional goals of inclusion and transparency. We wanted to get as many constituencies involved in the process as possible and keep everyone informed.

Throughout the search, we were pleased to get to know many talented and successful applicants. One measure of success was our ability to draw interest and applications from the highest quality educators and administrators in the country.

Our bar was high, and several excellent finalists emerged. At every turn, Rob Short impressed us. We were inspired by Rob’s clear vision for the school, his understanding and ability to sustain the culture, his grasp of the issues we are facing, and his always calm and assuring demeanor.

Once our selection was finalized, Rob wasted no time getting started. At many schools, the transition year is a “lost year” as the new head is unable to be physically present or provide plans for the future. Trinity reaped the benefits of Rob’s presence and leadership.

e Estes Center stands on the site of our old tennis courts, and as a former tennis coach of many years I have so many memories of student athletes and parents who made coaching fun.

Lastly, any place amazing teaching is occurring is precious. I have flashbulb memories of poetry instruction, math instruction and science and of incredible moments in the studio music lab with students engaging in original compositions.

Ten years from now, what will be the headline written about Trinity?

“Innovation and Community create Renaissance Spirit in High School Education”

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am already working closely with Rob and could not be more pleased with his vision and plans for our wonderful school. Around the Courtyard NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS

DÉCOUVREZ VOTRE CHEMIN!

Seniors Owen Ayers and Madison Ferris were named 2015 National Merit Scholarship Finalists in May, recognizing their academic and distinguished performance among students nationally.

Eleven students and two teachers took part in a week-long exchange program with Lycée de La Providence in Amiens, France over Spring Break in March.

Trinity students and teachers were welcomed graciously — into the classrooms of their exchange partners and the homes of their host families. The group also enjoyed field trips in and around Amiens, a city known for its rich history. The exchange trip ended with a weekend of sightseeing in Paris.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selected Madison Ferris ’15 as one of 565 semifinalists in the 2015 Presidential Scholars Program.

Madison was identified “on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character and involvement in community activities.”

AT THE MOVIES On a Saturday in early February, over 100 students, teachers and guests attended the 5th Annual International Film Festival hosted by the Trinity World Languages Department and organized by Alex Green ’15 as part of his CAS leadership project for the IB Diploma Progamme. Alex and the festival committee watched dozens of candidate films and worked with French teacher Julie Urena to discuss and select the best themes, topics and plots. “Some are comedies with a profound message, such as the French film, ‘Les Intouchables,’” said Urena.

“Others are serious in nature such as ‘The Attack,’ in Arabic and Hebrew, about a suicide bombing that takes place in Israel. All in all, the movies provide an enriching experience and an opportunity to step outside of our immediate world.”

In a reciprocal exchange, Trinity hosted 22 students and two teachers from Lycée de La Providence for a 10-day visit in late April. “Découvrez Votre Chemin!” was the theme of the trip (“Discover Your Path” in French), and the visitors enjoyed tours of local food and history along with the chance to be Titans for a week.

OUTDOOR CHALLENGE An intrepid band of about 35 students and teachers tackled a 50-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail over Spring Break, climbing peaks and promontories like Bald Knob, Spy Rock and the Priest — all while battling blisters, bruises

and bad weather: snow, ice, rain, wind, mud and temperatures in the mid-30s!

“I have led many outdoor adventure trips in my time, and that was one of the most physically demanding events I have ever taken students on!” said Michael Stratton, leader of the Trinity

Outdoor Program. “Although the climate we faced was the worst-case scenario, the chaperones and I were extremely impressed by the composure of the students in the face of adversity.”

It’s official… book it!

The 23 seniors in the IB Essay program received official bound copies of their IB Extended Essay in April.

Two copies of each essay were published—one for the student and one for the school to keep on display for posterity. The Extended Essay is a component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

In no fewer than 4,000 words, students complete an independent, self-directed piece of research, akin to a college-level thesis.

This year’s topics included: • “The Effect of the Point of Rotation of a Trebuchet’s Throwing Arm to Range” • “Religious Ichthyology: An Investigation on the Permanence of the Fish in the Christian Church” • “The Gaia Hypothesis as an Explanation of Changes in Temperature Extremes in Richmond, Virginia, between 1990 and 2010” • “Chinua Achebe’s Use of Familial Relationships in the Novel Things Fall Apart to Reflect the Igbo Culture” • “The extent to which Bitcoin can become a dominant currency and common practice in the world economy” In 1994, Trinity became the first school in the Richmond area to offer the IB Diploma. The program emphasizes intercultural understanding and respect and independent research.

PI WEEK Math enthusiasts in the Trinity chapter of Mu Alpha Theta (mathematics honors society) celebrated “Pi Week” last spring in honor of the date 3/14/15.

Daily Pi Week events included a pie-eating contest, a Pi-themed art contest and a pie-baking contest/sale with proceeds going toward math-related school supplies for the Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School.

ROBOT WARS The Trinity robotics team competed admirably in the Virginia Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at VCU’s Siegel Center in March. A sponsor of robotics competitions nationwide, FIRST encourages students to discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology.

“Our robot is built and designed entirely by students and this is a huge point of pride for the students,” said Page Mauk, one of the team’s faculty mentors. “Other teams’ robots are professionally built, as there is no rule against this in the competition.” The team also got to meet and pose with Congressman Dave Bratt.

UNITE FOR DIVERSITY Trinity’s Unite Club hosted the school’s first annual diversity conference on a Saturday in March, welcoming 25 students from Collegiate, St. Catherine’s, St. Chris, Trinity, and James River. The keynote speaker was Jonathon Zur, head of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.

Unite Club leaders Fletcher Rowe ’15 and Matthew Whiting ’15 independently devised and organized the event – implementing it as part of their CAS Leadership Project for the IB Diploma Progamme.

Junior Work Week For a week in February, Trinity juniors were on site exploring potential careers with dozens of host employers throughout the region. An essential piece of Trinity’s college counseling process, Junior Work Week helps students to begin thinking about their college major and can help them make future decisions about their career paths. Whether observing court cases in Federal Court, helping nurses tend to patients in the ICU, learning how to run a small business, or volunteering in elementary school classrooms—Junior Work Week gives every Trinity junior the chance to apply what they’ve learned in a real-life setting.

The most memorable activity of the day was the “Chain of Diversity,” said Rowe. “Each person wrote on a slip of construction paper what makes them diverse and unique and put it in the chain, showing how we should embrace our differences as a society,” he said. Rowe was also pleased to hear that the conference sparked a new interest in diversity topics from more than one participant. “The event made them begin to think of the world differently,” he said.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP The entire 10th grade took a break from classes on a Monday morning in March for some quality bonding and community service time. Working in teams, they fanned out around the campus and the neighborhood, picking up trash, pulling weeds and raking leaves. After lunch, the class enjoyed team-building activities in the gym (humanknot or tug of war, anyone?).

Class officers then addressed the grade, challenging their classmates to take leadership roles in the community as they transition to junior year. “They said they wanted their class to help Mr. Short carry on the great sense of community that they’ve enjoyed under Dr. Aycock,” said Chaplain Brian Griffen.

A DOGWOOD RIVER “A Dogwood River” is the title of an installation on Brown’s Island — created by the Trinity Art Club (led by Kippy Rivera ’17 and art teacher Amy Chaplin) — as part of a citywide project sponsored by Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH) and Art on Wheels. When 40 doors were

removed for the renovation of a VSH apartment complex for formerly homeless individuals, they became blank canvasses for local professional artists and community groups to turn them into works of art. The doors are now installed at museums, parks, historic sites and other landmarks around Richmond.

SUSTAINABILITY FARMS In honor of Earth Day, student from AP Biology as well as the Sustainability Independent Study class took a field trip to Manakintowne Farms, provides mostly greens, herbs and edible flowers to many restaurants in the area including Char-

lottesville and Williamsburg.

Students got their hands dirty learning about sustainable farming practices and getting to know about edible seeds and flowers.

“The Complete World of Sports (abridged),” was this spring’s theatre production by Trinity Performing Arts. Billed as a “a marathon of madcap madness and mayhem, comically depicting “the history of athletic competition,” the show featured stellar performances from a cast of five: Colin Busser ’15, Whitney Gallahan ’16, Steve Jean ’16, Lindsey McClain ’15 and Robert Morris ’15.

It wouldn’t be May at Trinity without the awarding of the prestigious and coveted Cornmaster Award, given annually to the student(s) who submit the corniest jokes at Morning Meeting each Friday. This year’s Cornmasters were the team of “Leprecorn and Kia!” Lindsey McClain ’15, Chris Powell ’15 and Kia Garrett ’15. The winning joke: “What is it called when you stare at a cow? …A Steak Out!”

A Decade of Jazz Fest More than 200 student musicians from across the region performed at the 10th Annual Titan Jazz and Art Fest in April. Trinity also welcomed Antonio Garcia, nationally-acclaimed director and head of Jazz Studies at VCU, conducting the VCU Greater Richmond High School Band. Participating student musicians received a unique mix of educational benefits combined with the excitement of performing on a professional stage. Garcia led each visiting band in an educational clinic prior to their festival performance.

This year’s finale set featured an original trombone trio arrangement showcasing Headmaster Tom Aycock, Mr. Garcia and Brian Rollins, Trinity band director. The work was commissioned to honor Dr. Aycock and graciously provided by Mr. Garcia, who wrote a swinging arrangement of one of Dr. Aycock’s all-time favorite tunes, the Cole Porter standard “It’s All Right With Me.”

Trinity Welcomes…

DERRICK “SKIP” HOPKINS A Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting in February featured guest speaker Derrick “Skip” Hopkins, a four-year defensive standout at Virginia Tech.

Growing up, he said, his entire identity was tied up in sports, and it was not until he got to college, and someone asked him, “if you had to stop playing sports, what would you do?” that he began to ponder his spirituality.

“Know that you don’t always have to be the best at everything,” he told students. “You just have to maximize the gifts God gave you.”

THE FRETFUL PORCUPINE On April 15, Trinity advanced musicians enjoyed the chance to perform at Pach’s Place with e Fretful Porcupine, a local duo (violin and alto sax) who fuse jazz, classical and American roots music. e duo also performed an extended set that morning, sharing a message of spiritual strength through artistic expression.

THE JEDI MASTER OF FINGERSTYLE GUITAR Advanced guitar students attended a master class in April with visiting musician Stephen Bennett, aka “e Jedi Master of Fingerstyle Guitar.” Leading them through a complex arrangement of the classic theme from Mayberry, he joked, “When I say ‘one more time,’ remember I’m always lying.”

Later that afternoon, in a special Pach’s Place concert, Bennet treated the Trinity community to a 30-minute set of original tunes on his collection of unconventional guitars.

Faculty News NEW FACULTY AND STAFF APPOINTMENTS Mandy Augst is the new head librarian. Mandy has a BA in English from VCU and completed her MLS at UNC Greensboro.

Nikki Carroll will teach Latin. She has a BA from Randolph Macon and is working towards a MEd at UNC Greensboro.

Mark Hall joins the athletics department as athletic trainer. Mark received his BS from Keene State College in New Hampshire and holds multiple certifications in Athletic and Fitness Training.

Molly McDonald is the new school counselor. She received her BA from the University of Virginia and her MEd in School Counseling at UNC Chapel Hill. Molly will also be joining our field hockey coaching staff.

Dana Walker will join the math department and coach track and field. She has a BS from Longwood and holds a master’s in sport management from VCU. Stacey Woodson will teach math. Stacey was a math major at VCU where she received her BS.

ASSOCIATE HEADS — NEW ROLES FOR VETERAN FACULTY Lee Sprague has been named Head of Faculty Life, a new position focused on the professional growth and support of Trinity’s teachers. Sprague has served in a variety of positions in her 13 years at Trinity, most recently in directing efforts to integrate technology and research skills into the curriculum. “Trinity’s faculty and staff are amazing people: curious and passionate educators, dedicated to helping our students develop their skills and talents,” said Sprague. “It is an honor to serve our mission together.”

Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00 has been named Head of Student Life. is new position will oversee all areas relating to students, including student leadership and initiatives, clubs and extracurricular activities and the advisory program, among others. An alumna herself, Weiler has served on the Trinity faculty for 10 years.

She will continue to teach an elective life skills course and coach girls cross country. “e Trinity community is incredibly vibrant, and our students are so capable and motivated,” Weiler said. “ey regularly inspire me with their accomplishments inside and outside of the classroom, and I am thrilled to be working to support them in all that they do.”

Brian Phillips has been named Head of Campus Life. Responsibilities for this new position include preservation and promotion of community values and campus stewardship as well as campus planning. A 30year veteran at Trinity, Philips will continue to teach theatre courses and coach boys varsity soccer. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve Trinity, especially at such a unique time. I look forward to working with students, faculty, staff and administrators in both preserving our institution’s values and unique culture while also exploring new opportunities for the continued growth and development of the school.”

MICHAEL STRATTON ’02 RECEIVES 2015 FACULTY DISCOVERY AWARD Math teacher and outdoor enthusiast, Stratton uses grant for national park tour Michael Stratton ’02 completed cross-country tour of our amazing national parks this summer, funded in part by the Faculty Discovery Award, given each year by the Trinity Board of Trustees.

A teacher in the math, science and social studies departments, Stratton is also the indefatigable leader of the Trinity Outdoor Program.

Equipped with his kayaks, mountain bikes, climbing gear, ice gear, kites, overnight packs and his running shoes, he has also documented much of his adventure with his Go-Pro camera and quadcopter drone, and he plans to share this trip of a lifetime with the Trinity community.

Stratton writes: “I first fell in love with the great outdoors when I was a student at Trinity, and it has been the greatest experience of my life to share my passion with the next generation.”

Aycock, presiding over his 25th and final graduation as headmaster. “You have given us leadership and positive energy,” he said in praise of the 100 assembled members of the class of 2015. “I’ve always felt that the most important factor of a school’s morale is the collective attitude of the senior class — and you have been one of the best. I couldn’t have picked a better class to go out with.”

Some student groups might have chafed at sharing the limelight with a retiring leader, and might have been reluctant to live up to the expectations that accompany a transitional moment in a school’s history. Not this one. This class easily and joyfully assumed a leadership role, blending high achievement with a competitive spirit and a collective cheerful mood that will make this year memorable in the best possible ways.

As a farewell memento of the shared significance of the 2014-2015 school year, class leaders presented Dr. Aycock with a framed, original pen-and-ink drawing of the Trinity campus.

Salutatorian Madison Ferris ’15 spoke with self-deprecating charm about consulting UrbanDictionary.com for the definition of “salutatorian,” which told her “the person who just missed being valedictorian by a few GPA points.”

“What a miserable person indeed,” she said. “And, yet, especially on a day like today, no one can be miserable. It’s not the Trinity way. I knew I’d be happy here from the very first Trinity event… the new student picnic… In that moment, I knew that these people, this place would be my home for the next four years, and I would enjoy every minute.”

Following Madison at the podium was Owen Ayers ’15, class valedictorian.

“Whatever I do in life, whatever my job title might be, I know that I want to do it through storytelling,” Ayers said.

“You will find that your best friends… the public figures who entertain you… and the people whose advice you are willing to keep… are the ones who are best storytellers. They are custodians of what we believe and value, preserving our individual and collective identity.”

“I encourage you to seek out the storytellers in your life,” Ayers continued.

“Pay attention to the lyrics in the music you hear, the words from the people who love you and never forget that artists are the best storytellers and have more power than they know….

Artists aren’t just poets and musicians.

They are also teachers and prophets, custodians, conversationalists, translators, witnesses, the people with whom you cook and share a meal, headmasters and the people with you in this room.”

The class chose ceramics teacher Amy Baynum Chaplin ’88 to deliver the commencement address. Though she confessed to being initially overwhelmed at the responsibility, Chaplin entertained the audience with a thoughtful string of advice, which she dubbed “some stream of consciousness, pragmatic thoughts to send you out into the world of college and beyond.”

College Choices Reflect Variety, Selectivity and Achievement

Trinity students continued to seek the best fit for their higher education destinations, applying to 143 different college and universities. The number of acceptances overall remained 72% this year, which means that of the 484 applications submitted by the class of 2015, 72% were accepted. Virginia public institutions continue to attract a large number of TES graduates; James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University, William and Mary, Virginia Tech, Longwood and the University of Virginia remain top choices. Private colleges in Virginia were popular this year, with students opting for Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, Washington and Lee University and Bridgewater College. College Counselor Julie Bruner said, “Chet Childress and I have noticed increased interest in the private option; the matriculation rose from 13% to 17% with this class.

Beyond the Old Dominion, students sought more distant schools like Penn and Princeton, and other selective schools like Georgetown University, Northeastern University and Wake Forest University. Moving even farther afield, Trinity students chose Auburn and Alabama, the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Texas at Austin. Art schools like the Savannah College of Art and Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago were the right fit for a number of TES students.

Each year, Counselors Julie Bruner and Chet Childress continue to stay abreast of the trends and procedures that can inform and expedite the process for Trinity students. “We have a lot of experience in fine-tuning the process for our students, based on the schools they choose to apply to,” said Bruner.

“We back up our advice with data, which can clearly show the best strategy.”

The data continues to show that students choosing to apply to highly selective colleges must consider a strategic application plan. “Choosing to apply early decision sends a strong signal of interest to colleges that are overwhelmed with applications from extremely competitive students,” said Bruner.

“A top student who submits regular decision applications to several Ivy League or other selective schools may, in fact, have less success than a student who chooses to apply early decision or early action.” Being mindful of the admissions landscape for individual schools or types of schools is a critical part of the process. “We are able to guide our seniors to make sure they apply to schools using the correct application plan,” said Bruner.

Trinity students understand the value and importance of philanthropy. In the 2014-15 school year, students completed 8,850 hours of community service, helping the Trinity community and local organizations in need. It is this spirit of generosity that distinguishes Trinity as a model of excellence in education.

They also know that Trinity’s many generous supporters are the reason they are able to engage in an educational experience that allows them to explore, innovate and create. In gratitude, they devoted an entire week in April to say thank you and to show their love. #TitansShowTheLove week included activities that allowed students to express appreciation for those who give of their time, talents, and treasure.

Students wrote notes of thanks and “tagged” people and things they are thankful for on Trinity’s campus, using the hashtag #TitansShowTheLove. “We really wanted to engage students in the true meaning of philanthropy,” said Anne Hurt, assistant director of development. “By talking about the things they love at Trinity, they learned just how much our generous donors support the Trinity community.”

The week culminated with a presentation at which 70 members of the class of 2015 pledged to support Trinity after graduation. Guests included Barry Bradberry, associate dean of admissions from Elon University, and talented Titan alumni musical duo Colin Healy ’08 and Caroline Mauck ’07. “The collaborative spirit of Trinity is what brought Colin and me together,” Caroline told seniors. “So, think fondly of Trinity when you head off to college.”

Swimming and Diving Unprecedented and historic are two words that sum up the boys swimming season, as they went 21-0, winning both the Prep League and the VISAA State championships. Assistant Coach Ashley Tremper was named VISAA Boys Coach of the Year.

“Our main goal was to be united, cohesive, and if we won something that was just gravy, a bonus,” said Tremper.

Named to the Richmond TimesDispatch All-Metro Team in Diving, Collin Busser ’15 was the Prep League Champion and finished 3rd in the state.

The girls team turned in an impressive 17-3 record, good enough for 3rd in LIS and 4th in the state.

Highlights included beating Mills Godwin by one point in the regular season. The 200-yd medley relay team of Hailey Ladd ’17, Erin Deloye ’15, Zoe Trenz ’16 and Kate Nezelek ’16 set the state record (1:47.92).

“They had been disqualified for the same event at the league meet and they were devastated about that to say the least,” recalled Head Coach Alice Phillips. “I honestly didn’t know that they could go that fast!”

Kate Nezelek garnered AllAmerican honors, taking first in the 50-yd free and 100-yd back, setting new LIS and state records

in the process. Her 100-yd backstroke time would have placed her 6th among the boys times. She was recognized by the statewide coaches as Outstanding Female Performer at the meet.

New team records were set by Meghan Burton ’17 in the 100-yd fly and Hailey Ladd ’17 in the 200-yd free.

Boys Basketball Going 9-3 in the Prep League (20-10 overall) earned boys basketball the regular-season championship, as Trinity became one of only two independent schools in Virginia to win at least 20 games for four straight years.

The team also made the Final Four of the VISAA State Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Coach Rick Hamlin ’96 said the team went “four for four” on their season goals: 1) make the state Final Four; 2) be ranked in the Richmond Times-Dispatch Metro Top Ten; 3) never lose

two games in a row; and 4) win the Prep League regular season.

A fifth goal, to win the Virginia Prep League Tournament, proved officially off limits, after the finals were cancelled due to snow. Josh Brown ’16 broke the all-time school scoring record finishing with 1,801 points in his Trinity career.

“Our theme was ‘Never give up,’” said Hamlin. “We went 10-4 in games in which we trailed at halftime. The season had so many incredible comebacks.” Four games that stand out for Hamlin were: coming back from 20-points down in the third quarter to defeat Potomac School; erasing an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to win at St. Christopher’s on a buzzer beater by Blake Bowen ’16; beating Benedictine 71-48; and beating St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes to make the state Final Four (after trailing in the fourth quarter).

Coach Gobble made special note of the path discovered over the course of Jack Cabell’s Trinity career. “He didn’t wrestle before high school. He started when the program started, as a sophomore, and now as a senior he is an AllState performer,” said Coach Gobble. “That is just a really cool thing. Other kids can see themselves following Jack’s path and achieving similar success.”

Girls Basketball An overall record of 9-11 represented an improvement of five wins over the previous season for the up-and-coming girls basketball program. The team also achieved the goal of being competitive against league rivals St. Catherine’s and Collegiate.

“We were in each game, with a chance to win in both,” said Head Coach Anna Prillaman.

Wrestling “Once more into the fray!”

Scrawled on the backs of their team T-shirts, this phrase borrowed from a cinematic poem set the tone for this season’s wrestling team. “We knew we would not have individual experience or team depth that other teams in the league had, but we weren’t sitting on the sidelines or dipping our toes in,” explained Head Coach Eric Gobble. “Every single day, we chose to go once more into the fray. The kids pushed themselves into their physical limits to try to make this new program something special.”

In only the second varsity season since the program was reestablished, two Trinity wrestlers achieved All-State honors: freshman Lauren Prata in 106-pound division, who despite wresting on a broken foot came in 8th in the state; and senior Jack Cabell in the 195-pound division, who placed 6th in the state.

Coach Prillaman praised the team for a sense of selflessness that permeated the whole season.

“They put the Trinity program first, the team second, and their selves last,” she said, “never worrying about scoring averages and individual stats. Several times, players pulled each other to the side and lifted them up, without the coaches intervening.” Because of injuries, Katie Cantone ‘16 became starting forward, despite being only 5’5”, and having to rebound against girls that were over six feet tall. “That took a lot of heart,” said Coach Prillaman.

Box-score highlights included a 32-point performance by Jaelyn Harris-Caple ’18 vs.

St. Gertrude and 12 doubledoubles on the season for Charlotte Woods ’16.

Indoor Track At the season’s culminating VISAA state meet on February 14, 2015, the girls indoor track team finished 4th in the state, while the boys finished 6th — both marks representing an improvement over 2014 (girls 9th, boys 12th).

“The goal of our training was to get the team to perform their best at the state meet,” said Head Coach Marcus Jones ’00.

“Both teams went into the meet with goals of finishing in front of Collegiate and the boys also wanted to finish in front of Norfolk Academy, a team that beat them at the league meet a week earlier. All of our goals were met at the team had an outstanding meet with many personal records falling.”

Individual highlights:

SPRING ATHLETICS

Nadia Khoury ’15 was State Champion in the High Jump with a jump of 5’7”. Khoury’s mark of 5’7” was a State Meet Record and the 12th best jump in the country for the indoor season. She also finished 3rd in the Triple Jump and 2nd in the 300.

Girls Soccer

Jamie Hiegel ’15 was All-Metro in the 3200m posting a season best time of 9:50.13. Hiegel was the Prep League Champion in the 3200m.

Isabella Anderegg ’17 threw a personal best in the shot put of 3 feet to finish 3rd.

Katie Bowe ’16 finished 4th in the 1000m.

Andy Chess ’15 broke his own school record in the pole vault, clearing 13-6 to finish 2nd in the state.

Henry Choisser ’15 broke the school record in the 300m running 37.37 to finish 4th in the state.

Steve Jean ’16 and Jamie Hiegel ’15 finished 1st and 2nd in the 3200m. Steve ran 9:51.94 to win his first individual state title.

The girls finished 4th in the LIS and the Boys finished 5th in the Prep League.

The 2016 season was a high-water mark for the girls soccer program at Trinity — with the first appearance in the state championship game in program history, the most wins in school history (18), the most goals scored in a season in school history (88) and the most wins of any high

school team in Virginia this year.

The team played an up-tempo, possession-based style of soccer, finishing the season 18-4-2, and earning 2nd place in LIS and 2nd in the state.

Head Coach Rick Hamlin ’96 praised the leadership of the team’s seven seniors (Tappe Grotos, Tess Huizenga, Caroline Moreno, Kasey Newton, Amanda Placide, Sidney Regan

and Lily Senn), who “provided as good leadership as any team I have ever coached which made each day with the team an absolute pleasure.”

Hamlin recalled knocking off defending-state-champion STAB (2-0), beating Collegiate twice and coming back from two goals down to win 6-3 at St. Gertrude.

“But the two games that I’ll remember the most were beating Norfolk Academy 3-1 in the state quarterfinal in front of a huge home crowd, and handing Bishop Sullivan their only loss of the season 2-1 in the state Final Four,” said Hamlin.

The team nearly accomplished all three of its goals, according to Hamlin: Never lose two in a

row (check); go undefeated at home (check); and win states (one game short). “It was magical.

The best season ever,” said Hamlin. “But not just because of all the success on the field.

This team had a mix of toughness, skill, leadership and competitiveness that made it an incredible group to coach. There were no egos, no cliques and no drama. Everything was about the team!”

Girls Lacrosse Overachieving, the girls lacrosse team surged to a 5-1 LIS record, finishing 13-5 overall and 6th place in the state. “We knew we had great potential, but it truly could have gone either way,” said Head Coach Margie Vaughan

Snead ’85. “It was one great surprise after another when the girls kept exceeding everyone’s expectations.”

Among the season’s big moments was a 13-12 win over Paul IV, when Snead said the girls “realized they could compete at the next level.” The team also bested Collegiate in the regular season for the first time in recent history and took a dominant STAB team into overtime.

“Our team was fairly inexperienced in terms of their lacrosse backgrounds, but they did a terrific job of bringing together their individual strengths to become a very strong team,” said Snead. “In particular, the each had an understanding their

individual roles within the team and we were much stronger than the sum of our parts.”

Track & Field A successful spring season saw both the boys and girls teams placing well in each meet. In the Prep League, the boys tied for 4th place with Norfolk Academy, while the girls in the LIS finished 5th place. At the VISAA State Meet, the boys once again tied with Norfolk Academy for 7th, and the girls placed 5th.

“This was one of the largest teams we’ve had and certainly one of the most well rounded,” said Coach Hayden Hodges ’10. “We fielded competitive athletes in every event.”

One of the most memorable meets for a lot of the team was the Lee-Davis Invitational.

“With over 2,000 athletes and over 40 teams, this met really had the best of the best,” said Hodges. “Despite it being warm and a very long meet, we saw the most personal best times, jumps and throws at this meet.

We also had four athletes gain top-three finishes.”

Three new school records were set this season: Zane Lewis ’16 in the 100m (10.95); Henry Choisser ’15 in the 400m (49.93); and the girls 4x100m relay team of Kendall Daniels ’15, Faith Hinton ’17, Meredith Eaheart ’16, and Nadia Khoury ’15 (52.19).

“Another highlight for the team and school was the acceptance of Nadia Khoury to compete in the high jump at the Penn Relays, the largest and most prestigious track and field meet in the country,” said Hodges. “She was among twenty or so of the best of the best of the country including a few athletes from Jamaica.”

Boys Tennis “This season was somewhat of a rebuilding year, as we lost our top five players on the ladder last year and started four underclassmen,” said Head Coach Chris Brown. “But we managed to always frustrate our opponents and weren’t intimidated by anyone.”

The team was 6-7 overall, despite going winless in the Prep League.

Season highlights included routs of Benedictine (8-1) and Goochland (8-1). “The turning point came during prep league tournament play when Christian Harris ’15 and Wit Ferrell ’18 almost captured 3rd place in their flights (No. 4 and No. 5 singles),” said Brown. “Our boys were playing very strong by then 26

and came up one point shy of a 4th-place finish.”

Brown noted the Freshman Alex Fernandez ’18 “performed admirably and held his own” as the only No. 1 freshman in the Prep League. Other top performances came from Christian Harris ’15, (a 10-6 upset over a No. 4 Collegiate singles player) and Jack Aprahamian ’16 (winning at No. 3 singles at STAB).

Baseball A challenging season for boys baseball netted just three wins (3-18 overall; 1-11 in the Prep League) and no postseason play.

“Our team chemistry defined our season,” said Head Coach Mitch Hauser. “The players loved playing together and worked hard day in and day out.”

Hauser said the spring break trip to Vero Beach, Florida will be a lasting memory “We played four scrimmages and got a lot of practices in under the Florida sun,” said Hauser. “This trip is what led to us being such a tight knit group. I think every player will treasure their experience on this trip.”

Robbie Harvey ’15 completed an almost unheard-of feat: by playing first base on Senior Day, he ended up playing all nine positions during his five-year career.

Golf A young group with only two seniors, the golf team finished with an overall record of 4-9 and a 5th-place finish in the Prep League Tournament.

“Team goals were to lower scores over the course of the season,” said Head Coach Becky Currier. “We had a high score of

204 and a low score of 168 — definite improvement.”

“Senior Liza Lewis was our No. 1 player all year, and she consistently posted scores in the low 40s for a nine-hole round,” said Currier. “Our No. 2 player, Jackson Sheppard ’17, also posted scores in the 40s as a sophomore.” Both players were selected to participate in the VISAA State Tournament in May.

Softball “There’s a time for fun and goofiness and a time for seriousness, and when you can make that transition between the two, it equals success,” said Head Coach Christy Darlington.

“That’s what happened this year.

Fun was fun, and work was work, but they also knew how to make a seamless transition between the two.”

Finishing 8-7, the girls earned home field in opening around LIS tournament as a 4-seed.

Ranked in the state every week except the last one, they fell just short of qualifying for the VISAA playoffs. With no weak spots in the lineup, all nine Trinity batters were a continuous threat.

Coach Darlington noted the “unflappable” defensive performance of Kate Pepper ’18.

“Twice, she caught a ball that deflected off our pitcher and still go an out.” Newcomer Ciara Smith ’18 also made an impression, diving headfirst into home on her first at bat vs.

St. Catherine’s.

Boys Lacrosse The boys lacrosse team finished with a record of 2-11 this year and did not qualify for postseason play. Highlights from the season included two great wins over Fork Union and Middleburg Academy (first in four years).

“The defense was the strength of the team and their stick skills and experience let to many clears to the offensive side of the field,” said Assistant Coach Chris McQueeney. “Sophomore goalie Jacob Wells stepped up in cage this year as a first-year varsity starter at that position and junior defenseman Ed Blake shored up the defense with his speed and aggressiveness on ground balls.”

“Offensively the team’s focus was ball control. Once we possessed the ball we wanted to keep it moving and make the opponents defense unsettled by picking and sweeping to a shot,” said McQueeney. The team benefited from leadership by seniors Marshall Dendy, Hunter Hughes, Gavin McCool, and Jon Munz.

Outgoing Athletic Director Eric Gobble reflects on the culmination of 10 years of building an athletic program the Trinity way.

After a decade as Trinity’s athletic director, Eric Gobble (left) has accepted the challenge to build an athletic program at the New Community School, where both of his sons are enrolled. Becky Currier (right) will serve as Trinity’s interim athletic director for 2015-2016.

e world of competitive athletics is all about numbers: wins, losses, percentages, schedules, records, distances, times and scores. It’s easy to look to these numbers to tell the Trinity story, but the heart of story isn’t about numbers at all.

It’s about how a successful program is about culture, character and community.

Outgoing Athletic Director Eric Gobble spent ten years building a program in which Trinity athletes have earned six state championships and four runners-up since 2007; three of those state titles came in 2014-2015 alone.

He and Becky Currier, currently serving as interim athletic director, credit this success to much more than on-field performance.

“I’ve always thought that the most special thing about Trinity was the school culture,” said Gobble. “e culture of the school is more important than any individual sport or any individual program. As we grew the athletics here, it was always paramount to me that we grew Trinity athletics.

I never wanted teams full of kids who were just there to wear a jersey that happened to say Trinity on it. I think as long as Trinity

at philosophy can be at odds with the pervasive sports culture Trinity students see outside of school. Gobble and his staff always emphasized Trinity priorities when working with coaches.

“Your first responsibility is as an adult and mentor to a young person whose family and school has entrusted you with his or her care and development as a human being. Your second level should be with regard to the school as a whole and that community and how this fits in the scope of the entire school. And only after you’ve satisfied both of those, then you consider if you’re doing what’s best for your team with regard to wins and losses in the sport,” he said. “And that’s a wholly different approach to your club or travel or AAUbased coaches, who put wins and college program placement foremost.” at attitude carries over to how Trinity students value each other and support each other. Athletic talent takes a back seat to intangibles that are harder to measure.

“Your place in the community is determined by your acceptance of others and your love for the community,” said Gobble. “e people that come in and assume that their athletic ability will take care of their place within the community find themselves on the outside of the community.”

Trinity’s school spirit, so critical to encouraging and celebrating student athletes, has its own characteristics that reflect the overall school culture. Gobble sees this school-wide support as crucial. “People can get hung up on championships and think that the success of a program can be measured by how many college recruiters walk in the door,” he said. “e concept of spirit and sportsmanship is more important. Our student section has become the ‘thermostat’ for other student sections around the state, in that we don’t reflect the temperature, we set the tone.

It establishes its own limits and sets the number as to what is right, what works and what feels good.” e Estes Athletic Center and Aycock Stadium, which opened in 2011, have provided a stateof-the-art facilities the athletic program as it has grown and flourished. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the realm of strength and conditioning.

Gobble can remember all too well the limitations those earlier

teams faced. “When I got here in 2003, I asked about the weight room, and they said that there wasn’t a weight room, but they said there was a weight machine that had been broken since the ’80s,” he recalled. “Now, having that facility, I don’t think it’s surprising that our athletes are as powerful as they are across all sports. Now our teams are seen as big, strong and physical.” e decade-long transformation of the Trinity campus, its facilities, and its athletic program has led to banners, trophies, media coverage, and all those numbers that add up to success. But, ultimately, the real success lies in placing the school ahead of individual or team achievements. Under Eric Gobble’s leadership, that’s been a priority. “e whole athletic program’s success is due to people who put Trinity first,” he said. “My primary goal in my time as Athletic Director has always been to put the school first and never put one sport ahead of another. As the school has grown, we have attempted to grow the whole athletic program with it.”

Because just one going-away party would not have been enough, the Trinity community honored outgoing Headmaster Tom Aycock and his wife, Kae, with three unique events in May to celebrate all they have given to Trinity over the past 25 years.

On May 7 at Salisbury Country Club, old friends, family, and colleagues shared stories, toasted and danced at a reception hosted by the Board of Trustees. On hand were former board chairs, lifetime friends, and the current Trinity faculty members whose tenure goes back to Tom Aycock’s first year as Headmaster.

A tent in Aycock Stadium welcomed all students, alumni, faculty and friends to a festive tribute to Tom May 15. Titans of all ages enjoyed lawn games, cupcakes, BBQ and snow cones, as they listened to musical tributes by student and alumni performers.

On May 27, all current faculty gathered at sunset at the Boathouse at Rocketts Landing to toast Tom with tall tales from his Trinity tenure. One very special moment was a group photograph of nearly all of the current faculty and staff who are also Trinity alumni.

“Thank you for several things: Morning Meeting, Corny Joke Friday, and for building Trinity into the school it is today,” said Bob Alley, social studies teacher. “I am a lifelong believer that education can change the world for the better. Thank you for hiring so many of my former students as teachers. Finally, thank you for being you.”

40 years later: reflections from a member of Trinity’s first graduating class My Life: Looking back at the first years of Trinity Episcopal School —by Swannee Goodman Ericson ’75 In November, many of us helped move the stored desks and furniture from the basement of the old Masonic Temple building on Broad Street into our brand-new classrooms. The library was centrally located in what is now the commons of the academic buildings, and it was filled with volumes of books that came from Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, which had recently closed.

1975 was a year of “firsts” for a new independent

college prep school south of the James River. It was 40 years ago this spring when Trinity Episcopal High School graduated its first class of seniors. As a member of that first graduating class, I can proudly say that we paved the way for the following classes, including those of my daughter (2005) and my son (2009).

When the school opened in 1972, we were the 10th-graders in a school with only eighth, ninth and 10th grades. We had the responsibility of being the school leaders for three years. By 1975, there were five grades and closer to 370 students.

We were led by wonderful teachers and administrators, who gave us the guidance we needed to be successful and then let us go ahead and work toward those goals. We helped create the Honor Code; established and ran the Student Government Association; created the first yearbook. We were the first inductees into the honor societies, and we were members and captains of the first varsity athletic teams. Our class was small in number, but huge in heart!

There were some bumps along the way.

In 1972, the construction of the school on Cherokee Road was not finished in time for the start of the school year in September. We got onto a bus at Bon Air Presbyterian Church and rode across the Huguenot Bridge and back up River Road to All Saints Episcopal Church, which is now just a short hop across the Willey Bridge.

The church let us use its Sunday school rooms as our classrooms until we were able to move into the new school building.

The school had only one laboratory, which was shared by the biology and chemistry classes, although there wasn’t any lab equipment for our chemistry class that first year. We practiced football and field hockey on an empty lot next to the Vaughans’ house on Burroughs Street in Bon Air. There’s a home there now. With no gym the first year, we took a bus to James River Academy out on Courthouse Road to practice basketball. It, too, is gone now. When the E. Rhodes Carpenter gymnasium was finished, we had to have classes in it as we had already outgrown our classroom space.

By 1975, the school’s enrollment had grown enough to have 23 clubs, including a debate club and service clubs. The choir and drama clubs put on a Gilbert and Sullivan musical, “Trial by Jury.”

We decorated the gym and sponsored the ring dance for the juniors, and they in turn sponsored the senior prom for us, held at the William Byrd Hotel. We heard illustrious speakers, such as Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell. Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. was our graduation speaker. The opportunities presented to us created some indelible memories.

The community of people who started Trinity was a close-knit group. We were the “First Families” of Trinity. Our parents formed the first board of directors, the Boosters’ Club and the Trinity Patrons’ Association. The administration and faculty had decades of experience in independent college preparatory schools. Retired educators from St. Christopher’s and Collegiate were advisers to the board.

Trinity Episcopal School (the name was officially changed in the late 1980s) is the result of many people, students and adults, pulling together to create a learning environment full of possibilities.

As a member of Trinity’s Class of 1975, I am happy to say the path that we first started paving at Trinity is now a long and well-maintained road to success. We were given amazing opportunities to be leaders and to succeed in challenging circumstances. You will find many of us as leaders in your communities today. Happy 40th anniversary to Trinity’s Class of 1975!

Virginia Commonwealth University News recently recognized Kim Snead Maxey ’76 for her work with Scrappy, a dog she rescued who is now a therapy dog in the VCU Medical Center Dogs on Call program. e VCU News article states: “Scrappy’s calm and caring disposition made him a great fit for the therapy dog program at VCU, which recruits dogs that are predictable, reliable and well-trained. A certified therapy dog, Scrappy has been visiting patients at St. Mary’s Hospital for the past six years. He also works at Chester Library’s Read 2 Rover program, where children learning to read practice by reading to him on Tuesday afternoons. After Maxey retired from teaching middle school math in Chesterfield County in June last year, she started bringing him to VCU Medical Center. She first shadowed a therapy rotation with a veteran Dogs on Call dog and then practiced visiting patients with Scrappy under the supervision of a volunteer services program coordinator. Scrappy was officially registered as a Dog on Call in November.”

“It’s special to see what such a quick visit will do,” Maxey says. “It warms your heart.”

Headmaster Hits the Road Alumni Luncheon at College of William & Mary Headmaster Tom Aycock and Head of School (elect) Rob Short— along with faculty members Lee Sprague and Ellie Donahue Boyd ’04—traveled to Williamsburg in March to visit Trinity alums at William and Mary. Alumni got to hear all the news from Trinity, and they talked about how well prepared they were for college, their next steps, summer plans, and the things they love and miss about Trinity.

Forrest Sprouse ’14 highlighted how relevant his Theory of Knowledge class has been because of the critical thinking skills he acquired and uses every day. Jenn Phillips ’13 noted she was grateful for the opportunity to try so many different things while at Trinity and said that she couldn’t have imagined a better high school experience. Several students—including Thomas Lee Rice ’11, Kelsey Watson ’11 and Marysia Kolbe Rieder ’11—spoke highly of English teacher Francis Decker and how much he helped develop their writing skills.

Trinity will be on the road again in the fall, so be on the lookout!

journey has been humbling and also exciting, I have just been really fortunate. I have gotten to work with some of the most creative people in the world. It’s been a learning experience, and I’ve learned you have to make the most of every single day.”

Laughton Elizabeth Mikula was born to Matt Mikula ’00 and Elizabeth Mikula on March 4, 2015 at 4:08 AM. Matt writes: “Both mom and baby girl are happy and healthy. Mom is on maternity leave from being the director of quality management at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital. I am a litigation attorney who practices in the Richmond metropolitan area. Elizabeth, Laughton, Cooper (family dog) and I enjoy going on walks in the evening, and we are looking forward to attending some Trinity sporting events in the coming months.”

Class of 2001 Seraphim O’Keefe ’01 writes: “Between my 11th and 12th grade year at Trinity I went to the Republic of Georgia for the summer to study classical painting with John Wurdeman ’93. After an intense and life changing summer, John and his colleague from Russia, Ilya Yatsenko, invited me to become their apprentice. After high school, I returned to Georgia, and spent the following years living at my teachers’ side in villages in Russia and Georgia, studying, drawing and painting intensively.

I completed several extended stays in monasteries in America to become a novice in a Georgian Monastery. I spent a year studying in Moscow before returning to America to exhibit art in various states and countries. During these years I met my wife, Ilaria. We spent one summer in a community on Kodiak Alaska discovering our talents; mine for iconography and my wife’s for singing and teaching music.

Since then I have been working as an iconographer. After Alaska we spent a year in Georgia before returning to America in the summer of 2010 for the birth of our first child, Herman. We moved back to Alaska for five months and then I accepted an invitation from an Orthodox church in Maryland to spend two years painting the interior walls of their temple. During this time our daughter, Ida, was born.

I am presently working on my second wall painting commission back home in Virginia, at St. Cyprian of Carthage Orthodox Church in Midlothian. It has been wonderful to be in town for this time, especially because my brother Tom O’Keefe ’03 welcomed his first child.

Once this project concludes, we are preparing to move to St. Vladimir’s Seminary in New York for three years of study.”

Sinclair Brydon Kindle ’01 and her husband, Jonathan, welcomed their second child in September. Sinclair writes: “Miss Presley Joy Kindle arrived September 20, 2014 at 11:25am at home, as planned! I'm kept quite busy chasing after a toddler and a crawler while my husbands peach business, e Country Basket at Sunny Slope Orchard is in full season!”

110 Outdoor Ambassadors recently highlighted Trip Jennings ’01 as one of the world’s top extreme kayakers. e article noted: “Trip Jennings has made numerous firsts, including the first source-to-sea of Papua New Guinea’s Pandi River and the first descent of the raging lower Congo River. Nowadays, Jennings travels with his camera filming for conservation projects, from documenting poachers in the Congo to capturing threatened salmon migrations in Alaska.”

Class of 2003 Kelly Flynn Blumenthal ’03 writes: “After Trinity, I went on to get my bachelor’s in Spanish from Barton College in 2007. My husband, Michael, graduated from Freeman in 2002, William & Mary in 2006 and then received his MBA from William & Mary in 2009. We have two sons, Mason and Finn.

Mason is 21 months and Finn is 6.5 months. I am currently a stay-at-home mom and Michael does financing for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon.”

Raphael Katchinoff ’05 visited Trinity in May and provided constructive feedback to advanced guitar students studying with Chris Markunas ’01. Raphael is a member of the band e Southern Belles.

Kathryn Mauck ’05 married Bryan Conklin in Gloucester, Virginia on June 13, 2015. She writes: “I am a school counselor at a high school in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and live in West Palm Beach.”

Sarah Goldstein Taylor ’05 and her husband, Chad, welcomed their first child, Easton Young Taylor, on April 21, 2015. Sarah writes, “We are ecstatic to be parents!”

Emily Barrett Hovis ’04 married omas Hovis on November 29, 2014. e couple resides in Richmond, Virginia. Emily is a political consultant and omas is a sales associate at Quantum Health.

Stuart Raper Nuckols ’04 married Joey Nuckols on April 25, 2015. Her classmates Joanna Gragnani, Claire Witmeyer, Emily Barrett Hovis, Erin Thompson, Jamie Satterfield, and Sinclair McCary Curtis were bridesmaids.

We have planned our wedding for October 17, 2015 at the Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond. We currently live downtown at Rocketts Landing and are enjoying city life while we can. Brian is a project manager for Metromont, a precast concrete company and I work at Baskerville as a hospitality interior designer.”

Rebecca Ott ’06 recently got engaged to John Winston Piersol. eir announcement in the Richmond Times-Dispatch noted that “Rebecca and John both attended the University of Virginia. [She] is currently employed by Milestone Consultants, Inc. and [h]e is currently employed as an English teacher at Maggie. L. Walker. A July wedding in Hot Springs, Virginia, is planned.”

Joshua is a Petty Officer third Class in the United States Coast Guard and we are Stationed in Rochester, New York.

Tommy Blissert ’07 writes: “Since January I’ve been the communications associate for Christchurch School in Saluda, Virginia.

My brother, Artie Blissert ’11, just graduated from Vassar with a degree in physics. In August, I’ll be traveling to Atlanta for the Wrecking Ball music festival. As far as hobbies go, I’m gradually starting an extensive collection of hats, mainly HUF and Supreme.”

Class of 2008 Colin Healy ’08 and Caroline Mauck ’07 were recently highlighted in the Richmond Times-Dispatch for their musical undertakings. e article noted: “[Colin’s] latest project – Colin & Caroline – has him teaming up with a former Trinity schoolmate Caroline Mauck and now they’re playing music all over town. ey recently opened for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! at e Camel. And they just released their first original song, ‘Fireflies.’

While they’ve released a handful of covers like ‘A ing Called Love’ by e Darkness and ‘You’re the One at I Want’ from the movie Grease, they’re currently working on more original material and hope to release a new original song in a month (or two) on iTunes.”

Mary Simpson ’08 writes: “I have recently accepted a position with Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School as the director of graduate support services. I will be working with the 52 grads to make sure that their needs are being met, that they feel supported, etc. Trinity will be seeing a lot more of me soon!”

Class of 2009 Marlee Dunbar ’09 pedaled from North Carolina to San Diego this summer with an organization called Bike & Build. Before the trip, she wrote: “I am ready for the sense of accomplishment, the challenge, and the excitement. Accomplishing spreading the cause of affordable housing, building many homes across the US, and propelling myself 38

across the country on a bicycle! I am ready for the unknown, the flat tires, empty water bottles and ice cream stops.”

Matthew Bryant ’09 writes: “I went to Virginia Tech and graduated in three years with a degree in math and minors in music composition and psychology. From there, I attended the Royal Holloway University of London in Egham, Surrey to study a master’s degree in the mathematics of cryptography and communication. I just started a job as a mathematician for the federal government after an 18 month application process. Previously, I substituted long term at Trinity in both math and physics. I also worked after school at a math learning center. My free time is primarily spent working on various Internet enterprises. I do a fantasy podcast and a blog about the science of cooking for a site called theknightsofnerdvana.com and usually do a weekly live stream series of nerd news. I also do a podcast for my own site, Bloglagoon.com. When I’m not doing that I’m reading, playing games or composing music.”

Rebekah Hupp Martin ’09 writes: “I am currently in my second year as a PhD student in civil engineering at Virginia Tech. I married Donnie Martin on June 6, 2015 at Bon Air Baptist in Richmond, Virginia.

Many fellow Titans were in attendance including Nathalie Oates ’09, Philip Tickle ’09, Heather Gerrish ’09, Catherine Seward Allison ’01, Bobby Speight ’82, Robert de Wolff ’12, Matt Jamer ’13, Thomas Hupp ’16, Stephen Hupp ’12 and Pierce Tickle ’11. Dr. and Mrs. omas Aycock were also in attendance. Donnie works as a civil engineer for VDOT and is in the National Guard reserves.

Together, we enjoy hiking, traveling, watching and playing soccer, cooking and enjoying the outdoors in our spare time.”

Morgan Bass ’09 writes: “I graduated from e College of William & Mary with a dual degree in biology and Hispanic studies. Now I am pursuing my master’s degree in animal science at the University of Georgia. I am studying beef cattle nutrition and researching the impact of trace mineral supplementation on the immune response and growth performance of stocker cattle.”

Logan Miller ’10 writes: “After graduating in 2010 I went to Longwood University to pursue a degree in criminal justice. While in college I joined eta Chi Fraternity, had an on campus job, served on SGA and was voted senior class president. I always wanted to be a police officer and entering into my last semester I entered the application process with the Henrico Police Department. I was very fortunate to be offered a spot in the 59th Basic Police Academy, and after seven months of intensive training, I graduated and I am currently in field training. I’ve always loved dancing as well, and at the academy we

Reunion Class Chairs were asked to do a workout video to Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk”. is was special to me because I never thought I would incorporate my love of dancing with law enforcement. I’ve been able to do some traveling as well, including a family vacation to California, and also studied abroad in London my junior year at Longwood. I am very excited to see where my career and my future life travels will take me.”

Jordan Tarsovich ’10 writes: “I recently graduated from VMI with a Bachelors degree in Economics and Business. e lifelong friends and memories I have from attending made the difficult journey all worth the while. I am so blessed to have had my parents support in the classroom and on the baseball field. As far as baseball goes, getting an opportunity to play professionally has been a lifelong goal. My road was not easy. With my undersized frame VMI was the only division I school that offered me an opportunity to play.

After my freshman year, the coaches told me I needed to earn a spot back on the team for the upcoming season. I became extremely motivated to prove everyone wrong. I exceeded my coaches’ expectations and started for the next three years. I spent my summers playing baseball too. I started in the Virginia Valley League and ended up winning the League’s MVP award. e next summer I played in the Cape Cod Baseball League in Massachusetts. I performed well and won All-Star honors in the league. is is what really put me on the map for professional teams. I am very fortunate to continue my career and be given this opportunity to play for a respected and prestigious organization like the Dodgers. Unfortunately, in my last college career at bat, I hurt my shin and am still rehabbing daily to try and get back on the field as fast as possible.”

Class of 2011 e Patriot-News recently highlighted Colin Catherman ’11 and his hockey career at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. e article stated: “Senior goalie Colin Catherman conclud[ed] his college hockey career at LVC on a high note. After battling through an injury for much of the 2014-15 campaign, the Virginia native got a recent start in goal from coach Parsons for the final home game of the season. Not only did he make sixteen saves on his way to earning the victory on Senior Night, but he did it in style by being named the game’s #1 Star.”

trip to Las Vegas at the end of May. Sad to see that Dr. Aycock is leaving, but when I attended Trinity he was always putting his heart and soul into making us all better students and more importantly better people. I am so grateful for all of my teachers that I had while I was a student, especially Mrs. Street whose teaching gave me an amazing foundation for the classes I have had to take! ank you so much for all the support and Go Titans!”

Kyle van de Kamp ’12 writes: “I currently work for a company called Paisley & Jade, a vintage and eclectic wedding rental company. e company is co-owned by Morgan, wife of Chris Markunas ’01. I work as a carpenter, electrician, and on the delivery crew. I am still pursuing internships more related to my field, Computer Science. e van de Kamp family is doing well, Lauren van de Kamp ’07 is still coaching field hockey at VCU, Aidan van de Kamp ’09 is currently taking college courses, and Christie van de Kamp ’16, just got her license and is competing in the national field hockey tournament this summer! In my free time I enjoy photography, mountain biking and technical theatre. I recently competed in the Riverrock photo contest where I placed third and received an honorable mention for my work.

I still volunteer regularly at the Trinity theatre throughout the year to assist in their productions, lighting, and construction. In March I traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio with Brian Phillips, Chris Markunas ’01, Jordan Weiss ’15 and Chris Powell ’15. We attended a theatre conference (USITT) to learn more about the world of theatre and to see new products that were being released.”

Class of 2014 Reid Barden ’14 visited campus in May to check in with friends and former teachers. He reported that he had a great year at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Who’s Next?

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION— HOMECOMING 2015 Two Titans will be inducted into the Trinity Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime of the football game during Homecoming weekend. The Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes deserving athletes, former coaches and athletic contributors from the Trinity community. The ceremony will be held in Aycock Stadium during halftime of the game on Saturday, October 10. All previous inductees will be formally invited back to help welcome the two newest members to the Athletic Hall of Fame. Be there to celebrate Trinity athletics and congratulate these two distinctive Titans.
