As a career educator, I pay attention to numbers. I have to care about budgets, enrollment, test scores and salaries. I watch out for percentages, trends, and dollars and cents. I monitor admission applications and college acceptances, and I count touchdowns and free throws and goals. It’s an important part of my job, and I take pride in the success stories that numbers can tell.

But I’m even more interested in what’s behind the numbers. Yes, I rejoice that Trinity’s enrollment has doubled in 24 years, but what matters to me are the students themselves: the people they became, the things they learned, the way they changed my life and the way Trinity changed theirs. Our newest students may start out as a list of names . . . but right away they become a group of individuals, with distinct personalities, talents and gifts—and corny jokes to share. Statistics will tell you a lot about Trinity’s history, but it won’t tell you what’s most important: the people that make up this community.

This issue of the Titan Trail is full of interesting facts, figures, scores and stats. But as you turn the pages, think about the faces and families that make us who we are, and make us a school that cares. To me, that’s what makes us number one.

More the Merrier

Trinity’s always been a family-friendly place, and through the years extended families have called it home. In the ’70s and ’80s the Baroody sisters, Ann-Mitchell Baroody Farleigh ’79, Becca Baroody Bertotti ’87 and Julie Baroody Urena ’81, lived just down the street and attended TES. Julie Urena, a current faculty member, has two more Titans: son Manny ’13 and daughter Olivia ’17. In the ’90s, the Witthoefft clan enrolled: brothers Jason ’93, Ned ’96 and Brian ’99; their cousins Erin Witthoefft Irwin ’99, Adam ’04 and Lauren Witthoefft Baggett ’01; and Susan Witthoefft McGinn ’94 and Mark ’93.

This year the fifth Methven sibling, Liam ’18, enrolls. He follows Emmett ’10, Lucy ’12, Grace ’14 and Oliver ’16. And, as part perhaps the most extensive family network to date, Alex Marchetti ’18 joins Trinity. He follows his parents Joe ’75 and Virginia Flemer Marchetti ’75 and siblings Sarah Marchetti Van Velsor ’99, Joseph ’03, Catherine ’06 and Victoria ’08. Also part of the family is cousin Anastasia Graves ’16, daughter of Natalie Marchetti Graves ’78. English teacher Allison Marchetti, married to Joseph ’06, rounds out the family connections.

Silver Stars Marti Truman, Rob Short celebrate 25 years of teaching excellence

Down to a Science — Marti Truman brings a teacher’s care to coordination of the IB program

M

arti Truman’s 25 years at Trinity could stand alone as a testament to best practices, educational excellence and thoughtful administration. But her years at TES, which include a quarter century of classroom teaching and a more recent seven-year tenure as International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program Coordinator, are just the most recent phase of a career spent pursuing teaching as and art and a craft. Along the way, she has had a chance to discover what matters most in working with young people.

Truman, a Kentucky native, was educated at Auburn University. While earning a master’s in science education from Florida State University, she taught at an independent school in Thomasville, Georgia, which gave her an early glimpse of the freedoms and opportunities inherent in the independent school model.

Her next position—at a gifted and talented magnet school for inner-city middle school students in Baton Rouge, Louisiana—showed her a different side of teaching.

“The building was condemned,” she remembered, “and we couldn’t go outside because of gunfire. When it rained, we had to gather on the second floor and use inflatable bridges to get the students to the school buses.” Still, she said, she learned that certain values and commitments rise above physical constraints. “I’ve never seen such family support,” she said. “Whenever we met with family members, someone was always there. They saw it as a privilege.”

Still, for Truman, the extra demands placed on her there—to teach large

Along the way, she has had a chance to discover what matters most in working with young people. classes, and to teach peripheral subjects unrelated to the curriculum—led her to return to independent schools. “I am a science teacher, not just a teacher,” she said.

The opportunity came in the late 1980s when her spouse and partner of 36 years, Dr. Kia J. Bentley, took a position at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Truman applied for teaching positions at local private and public schools and ended up at TES in the fall of 1989.

There, she encountered Rob Short, fresh from his student teaching assignment at Trinity. Ultimately, they both ended up as colleagues in the science department, where Truman was able to focus on her passion, teaching high school biology. “That’s where I’ve gotten my energy from,” she said.

As an AP (Advance Placement) teacher in the mid-90s she play a role in evaluating the IB program when Trinity was considering adding it to the school’s curriculum. Once the school chose to adopt the IB program, she said, “Trinity has embraced its IB identity.” After

assuming the coordinator’s role in 2007, she has adopted a behind-the-scenes approach. “I want to be a coordinator and not a dictator,” she said. “I’ve worked to develop excellent communication about the program.” She’s seen the program grow steadily year after year. “I hope that I have provided encouragement for students who really want to challenge themselves.”

Although she is meticulous about maintaining records, analyzing data, and making informed decisions, Marti Truman still values the human factor most of all. Her time at Trinity, she says, has been defined most by “…the relationships I’ve developed with really incredible colleagues and the opportunity to work with such dedicated and competent people.”

Two minds; one heart — Rob Short’s different perspectives come together where it counts teacher, coach, assistant head for student life, student conduct committee head, and even athletic director. He has seen Trinity grow and change from a number of perspectives, and he has been able to use that experience to focus on what’s most important. “In the end, it really is all about the students. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow and develop.”

H

e’s an intellectual with an easygoing style; a scientist who revels in spiritual discovery; a generalist with highlytrained analytical skills. He helps manage the whole school, but enjoys the oneto-one relationships most. He knows the value of specialization, but prefers the renaissance approach. He has a 21st-century appreciation for technology, but an old-fashioned sense of decency, courtesy and kindness. Rob Short may be full of contradictions, but it all adds up to a leader with his eye on what’s most important and a heart that beats in time with Trinity’s values.

Short, as assistant head of school, has broad responsibilities and widespread influence on the life of the school. He started out as a student teacher at Trinity more than 25 years ago, and since then has served as a classroom

The duality in his personality has its roots in his upbringing. “Up until the age of 13, I grew up on a Pennsylvania dairy farm, surrounded by Amish and Mennonite families,” he recalled. “I had one foot in the 19th century, and one foot in the modern world. It was an incredibly rich life. I learned so much from people who didn’t know who the president was, but who were deeply connected to the earth and had such remarkable values.” After moving to Virginia as a teen, Short went to Virginia Tech to study microbiology. After graduation, a brief stint as laboratory researcher convinced him that his real interests and gifts lay in education.

Advanced degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University followed. A last-minute serendipitous change in student-teaching placement brought him to Trinity.

ranging interests, active curiosity, and commitment to service. He brings that appreciation for the big picture to his work at TES. He teaches Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the foundational class in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, and has found it to be a perfect fit. “TOK analyzes how we know what we know,” he said.

“I have come to treasure critical thought, which is the root of so many wonderful things.”

Short, characteristically, deflects any credit for Trinity’s strength away from himself. He’s a man who rarely says “I”, and always says “we.” “We have a very collaborative, collegial atmosphere,” he said. “It’s our school. I think we’ve managed to keep that sense of being grateful for what we have.”

Celebrating his 25-year tenure at TES gave those colleagues a chance to express their gratitude for him: for his quiet example, listening ear and thoughtful leadership. He may be of two worlds, but he’s the best of both.

Substance and Style Anne Alessio’s passion for excellence

S

ometimes it’s the details that matter. Sometimes it’s the small things that are the most important.

Anne Alessio, who retired after 26 years at Trinity, may be small in stature, but in all other ways has blessed the school with a legacy that is enormous in scale and scope. At her retirement celebration, the tributes that were read and expressed by a grateful community referred to her meticulous commitment to detail and excellence, her courtesy and style, and the countless small gestures that reveal her loyal and decent character.

Together, the details add up to a big picture that is a masterpiece.

Anne Alessio came to Trinity in 1985 and worked in development under Headmaster Bob Goodman. She quickly moved to an assistant’s role for new Headmaster Ray Nelson in 1988. The school was younger and smaller, and in need of an administrative hand that could establish policy, synchronize systems, and add a bit of professional polish. When Tom Aycock was chosen to be the next headmaster in 1990, Anne was there to guide the North Carolina newcomer through a bewildering first few months on the job.

She came by her expertise naturally, but also through her earlier career experience. A Chicago native, she and her six younger siblings attended Loyola University. Anne later went to work at the university as the administrative assistant to the vice president and dean of the faculty, a position where accuracy and details mattered, as did the dignity of the office. She maintained high standards for both. Her husband Jim, her high school sweetheart, took a position at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1972, and the couple brought their higher-education skills and experience to Richmond for “two or three years.” Three-plus decades and three children later, they are both now retired with distinguished careers to be proud of.

Anne Alessio’s partnership with Tom Aycock blossomed since that first week when she struggled to understand his Tar Heel accent. Since that time, she has shared and supported Tom Aycock’s work, and seen their efforts unfold in

more than two decades of growth and success. She has served as the secretary to the board of trustees, maintained meticulous and thorough records, kept the school’s history, managed the interviewing and hiring of dozens of employees, and applied rigorous and learned editorial standards to countless documents. She’s been the navigator at the helm; watching for hidden reefs and treacherous currents, yet never seeking credit or kudos.

Her creative sensibilities are evident in unexpected corners of the campus; inspired color choices and perfectlychosen furniture and fixtures are part of her portfolio. She knows how to be tasteful, she understands what’s appropriate, and she wants everyone and

everything she cares about to be presented at its very best. She cares about the thoughtful follow-up, the dignified greeting, the professional response.

Tom Aycock said, “What were the odds that a country boy from Fremont, North Carolina and a city girl from Chicago, Illinois, could work together so effectively and so successfully for so long?” Faculty and staff shared tributes at her retirement party, emphasizing her thoughtfulness and kindness, and the countless gestures of help and support.

Dr. Aycock, in raising his glass to Anne, said, “For your dedication, your intellect, your perseverance, your loyalty, your ability to get things done with flawless efficiency, and, most importantly, for your love of our school, we thank you.”

MODEL UN Trinity’s Model United Nations club attended the Model United Nations Conference at the Baltimore Hilton held by Johns Hopkins University, which had over 2,000 delegates. Callaway Sprinkle ’15 was named Best Delegate on the World Trade Organization committee. Delegates Schuyler Cottrell ’14, Lindsey McClain ’15, and Kyle Schaefer ’15 found themselves appreciating the verisimilitude of the conference when they participated in “midnight crisis” sessions, in which they were actually awakened in the middle of the night to deal with multiple crises. The club will host a regional conference at Trinity in October 2014.

GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL LANGUAGE ACADEMIES Three students were selected to attend Governor’s Foreign Language Academies in summer 2014 nominees. The three-week summer residential academies feature immersion foreign language study. Attending are Alex Green ’15 (French), Henry Choisser ’15 (Latin), and Garrett Allen ’16 (Spanish).

ROBOTICS The Trinity robotics team travelled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida over the weekend of April 4, 2014 to compete in the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition South Florida Regional. The Titans competed against some of the best robotics builders worldwide and earned a fifth place finish out of 12 highly competitive teams.

SONG AND DANCE Steve Jean ’16 and Bridget Jean ’17 participated the Interlochen Center for the Arts music and theatre program during the summer of 2014. This highly competitive program brings together student artists in grades

3-12 each summer in northern Michigan to learn, create and perform alongside leading artists and instructors.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The Trinity swim and dive team has raised more than $46,000 for cancer research in the past 10 years. This year, in the final year of the team’s participation, the Titans raised $3,686 for the Lustgarten Foundation, in honor of Trinity’s Rosen family at the Making Waves for Cancer Lapathon held over the Christmas 2014 holiday.

ONE ORGANIZATION, MANY OPPORTUNITIES Trinity’s parent volunteer groups have merged into a single organization to better serve the school’s volunteer needs, and to afford parents a coordinated approach to family involvement which is so important to the sense of community that is integral to the Trinity culture.

CORNMASTER AWARD The annual Cornmaster Award, which honors contributors to the Friday morning corny joke tradition at TES, was won by the triple-threat team of seniors Buck Kirtland, Chase Shugart and Cullen Joyce. Headmaster Tom Aycock presented traditional trappings at the final Morning Meeting of the 2013-2014 school year.

SKATING TO VICTORY Faculty member Julie Davi attended the US Figure Skating Adult Championships in Hyannis, Massachusetts, April 8-12, 2014.

She finished third in the final, winning a bronze medal in her

age group. She also competed in the Showcase Dramatic Skate event, which is more of an artistic competition and less about the elements, winning another bronze medal. “This was my first Adult Nationals and I really didn’t expect to do so well,” she said.

“Adult skating is so great because we are all so supportive of one another. There is lots of cheering for everyone, no matter the level or region represented!” Davi has also become a judge. “I am very excited to represent the sport in this new capacity and continue to move up the ranks as a judge,” she said. “My dream is to one day get a national appointment and judge at the US Figure Skating Championships.

The Trinity Parents Association (TPA) now oversees ALL parent volunteer activities. Within the TPA are special-interest groups like the Sports Volunteers (formerly the Sports Boosters) and Fine Arts Volunteers (formerly the Fine Arts Boosters) for parents who enjoy specific service opportunities. All parents may choose to volunteer to help with individual sports and arts projects, school-wide special events, sales shifts in the Titan Closet (school store), and hospitality needs.

Parents serve lunches, plan grade-level parent social events and organize special treats for students and faculty.

The Tie that Binds CLASS OF 2014 GAINS ALUMNI STATUS Our seniors enjoyed a special presentation and delicious donuts from Dixie Donuts on April 25 as they ushered into their final weeks before graduation. Barry Bradberry, Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Planning at Elon University, spoke to the group and bestowed both comical and serious words of advice as they prepare for their transition into college and greater independence. Topics varied from tips for efficient laundry cleaning to class scheduling and money management.

Graduation not only represents the next step in our students’ education journey, but also the exciting transition of officially becoming Trinity alumni. Ellie Donahoe Boyd ’04, who currently works in Trinity’s development and admission offices, shared her thoughts on what it means to be a Trinity alum and its importance to her 10 years after her own graduation. Boyd said:

“Look at your classmates around this room…in the next few years some of your friendships will fade, some will stay exactly the same and some of you will grow closer, but best of all each of you will always be Trinity alums!

Welcome, you’ve earned it!”

Assistant Director of Development, Anne Hurt, also explained the important role Trinity alumni play in ensuring the school they have grown to love over the past few years, continues to grow for future students. Hurt stated, “During your time at Trinity you have been exposed to many wonderful opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom that have set you on the path to success once you leave campus in May. This is because your teachers care, your parents care, and because alumni care about your growth and development as you become adults and graduate in a few short weeks.” Hurt ended the presentation by requesting that each senior pledge to make a gift to Trinity’s annual giving campaign post-graduation. She explained, “Alumni support is crucial to the sustainability of Trinity.”

After the program was completed, 56% of the class of 2014 made a pledge to give to Trinity for the next four years. They certainly love Trinity, and we are so very proud of them. We know that with alumni like them, the Titan spirit will continue live on for many years to come.

THREE-WHEEL TRAVEL Trinity’s Annual Tour de Trinity, a tricycle relay race inspired by the Tour de France, was held April 25. Teams of student cyclists race against other teams around the Perkinson Arts Center parking lot.

“It’s a fun way for the French Club to raise money for the World Bicycle Relief organization, which provides sturdy, robust bicycles for people in economically underdeveloped counties,” said French teacher Julie Baroody Urena ’81. This year the French club raised enough money to purchase two bicycles.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Senior Day—when the almostgraduates wear their college tee shirts and mark the beginning of graduation week festivities— had an unexpected soundtrack this year. The class processed in to Morning Meeting playing kazoos. It may not have matched the Trinity tradition of expert musical performance, but for sheer fun it couldn’t be beat.

There’s a new look to Aycock Stadium. The press box now clearly and proudly identifies the athletic complex, and shouts out a bit of Titan pride. The new signage, installed in June, was a cooperative venture between the school and parents Chris and Laurie Maestrello. The Maestrellos thought the field could use some improvement, and contacted Trinity to offer to help. “It was a

generous gesture,” said Director of Development Laurie Hedgepeth.

“The Maestrellos helped make the new sign possible, and worked with us be sure it matched our branding and design parameters.

It was a great example of cooperative philanthropy. We’re very grateful.”

The winning team receives the famous yellow jersey, or “maillot jaune,” and a pizza party.

Another award is given to the team wearing the most spirited attire. Teams can dress up in costumes representing their particular club, such as the “SombreBros” from the Spanish Club, and the track team who wore their track uniforms and bow ties.

Tom Wyllie, English teacher, has retired.

NEW TRUSTEES Susan Crews joins the staff of the Academic Resource Center. She has a bachelor’s degree from Miami University and a master’s from the University of Massachusetts.

Laurie Frye is Trinity’s technology facilitator, a new position.

She holds a B.A. from Mary Baldwin College and a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia.

Trustees completing their terms of service in June 2014 were Bill Gibbons, Sally Thompson, Michael Jones, Yvette Dorsey, Denise Tarkington and Chet Childress. Newly elected are Paige Bell, who previously served as Fine Arts Boosters representative to the board, Virginia Marchetti ’75, and E. G. Allen ’83. Lee Sprague will serve as faculty representative, and Lisa Compton will represent the Trinity Parents Association.

New babies joined the Trinity family in spring and summer 2014. Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00 and her husband, Jonathan, welcomed twin sons William Jett Weiler (Jett) and Penn Rittenhouse Weiler (Penn) on March 19, 2014.

Lauren Mathews will teach Latin part-time. She holds a B.A. from Davidson College.

Elizabeth McDermid will teach French part-time. She received a bachelor’s from the College of William and Mary, and a master’s from Southern Methodist University.

Betsy Reid will join English department. She holds a B.A. from Meredith College and a M.Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University.

David Ready has joined the development group as Marketing and Communications Manager. He will oversee Trinity’s web site, electronic and print communications, social media, branding and advertising programs. He holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Molly Sanyour ’01 will teach art. She holds a bachelor of fine arts from James Madison University.

Chris Williamson ’00 will teach English. He has a B.A. from James Madison University.

Rick Hamlin ’96 and his wife, Austin, welcomed a daughter, Keese Cashman Hamlin, on June 3.

Rachel and Brendan Behrens had a baby girl, Saylor Marie Behrens, June 3.

FACULTY DISCOVERY AWARD Allison Fiebert spent ten days in Colorado this summer becoming a Wilderness First Responder (WFR). Fiebert, who teaches photography and art, was this year’s Faculty Discovery Award winner. Each year faculty members may apply to the Board of Trustees for a cash award to be used for a travel, education or enrichment experience that can be shared with the school community.

In her application, Fiebert said: “Spending time being active outdoors has been a lifelong pursuit and passion. The experiences I’ve enjoyed in remote areas, appreciating our abundant natural resources, have impacted my character, my outlook toward life and my appreciation for our planet.”

The WFR certification process trains individuals to respond to emergency situations and is a common requirement for outdoor educators.

Fiebert served as a leader for Trinity’s Appalachian Trail backpacking trips in 2013 and 2014.

Boys Basketball Another memorable season closed with the Titans winning a second straight Prep League championship and moving on to the state tournament final four for the first time since 1996. Along the way a state tournament victory over number-one-ranked Benedictine College Prep added a thrilling moment to a season full of firsts.

The team finished the season ranked #6 in the Richmond TimesDispatch poll, with a regular-season record of 13-1 and the third straight 20-win year. Coach Rick Hamlin ’96 was Prep League Coach of the Year.

Abraham Ferrell-Logan ’14 was named first team All-State, All-Prep League, All-Prep League Tournament, All-Tournament at Benedictine Capital City Classic Tournament and MVP of Trinity’s own Travis Invitational Tournament. Josh Brown ’15 was second team All-State, second team AllMetro, All-Prep League, MVP of the Prep League Tournament, All-Tournament at the TimesDispatch Invitational Tournament, All-Tournament at Travis Invitational and surpassed 1,000 career points scored. Austin Williams ’14 was second team All-State, AllPrep League, All-Tournament Prep League. Nathan Swift ’14 was named to the All-Prep League team.

Girls Basketball Girls varsity basketball ended the season with a record of 5-17.

Plagued by injuries, the Titans still prevailed and got big wins over teams such as Covenant, Steward School, and Pope John Paul the Great. Senior co-captains Sarah Godfrey, Allie Neal and Maggie Mauck led the team of young players throughout the year with excellent communication and leadership.

mark. On February 11, 2014 Mauck became Trinity’s all-time girls basketball leading scorer.

She finished with 1,067 points over her four-year career.

Wrestling In Trinity’s second year of the reinstated wrestling program, the team competed in a hybrid junior varsity/varsity schedule. In the Titans’ first varsity tournament, The Cavalier Clash, hosted by Caroline High School, the following wrestlers medaled: Josh Garber ’17 earned first place in the 120-pound weight class, Connor Ashley ’15 earned third place in the 126-pound weight class, Darrell Atkins ’16 placed third in the 160-pound weight class and Trevor Taylor ’17 placed second in the 182-pound weight class.

Swimming and Diving The teams had highly successful season under the leadership of Coach Alice Phillips, who was 16

honored with Coach of the Year designations for Prep League, League of Independent Schools (LIS) and the state. The teams were strong in both individual and team competition. The girls and boys teams each lost only one regular-season contest, and firsttime victories over perennial rivals Collegiate School and St. Catherine’s School made the 19-1 (boys) and 18-1 (girls) records especially satisfying.

At the league level, the boys were second in the Virginia Prep League. The girls were third in LIS league competition. “States was really our pinnacle meet as the boys finished sixth overall with the most points we have ever scored,” said Alice Phillips. The Titans toppled two team-relay records (Patrick Groh ’15, Sam Kettlewell-Sites ‘16, Sam Hatley ’16 and Tray Pankey ’15 in the 200m medley and Groh, Kettlewell-Sites, Hatley and Aidan Sullivan ’16 in the 400m free relay). Hatley was All-State in the 200m free and 500m free.

At the state tournament the girls finished second, 120 points ahead of the third place team, and only seven points behind the winner, Collegiate. There were eight team records broken at the meet. The All-State athletes included Keaton Busser ’14 (diving), Kira Tomenchok ’14 (100m back, 400m free relay), Kate Nezelek ’16 (50m free, 100m free, 200m free relay, 400m free relay), Kasey Newton ’15 (100m free, 200m free relay, 400m free relay), Hailey Ladd ’17 (200m free relay, 400m free relay), and Meghan Burton ’17 (100m fly, 200m free relay). Busser was the LIS dive champion for the fourth year in a row. She and her brother Collin Busser ’15 were both named Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro in diving.

Girls Soccer The team achieved a sixth-place state ranking and tenth-place metro ranking with a regular season record of 9-5-2. For the seventh straight year the team made the state tournament.

Coach Rick Hamlin ’96 surpassed 100 career wins as a coach.

Caroline Moreno ’15 was All-LIS and first team All-State, and was named to the Richmond TimesDispatch All-Metro second team.

K.D. Hatchett ’14 was also AllLIS and second team All-State.

“It was a strong season,” said Hamlin. “We accomplished so much, including a team goal of never losing two in a row.”

Miranda Stinson also earned All-State and All-American honors. Bowe, Hughes and Stinson were selected to play in the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament representing the Mid-Atlantic Region. From that tournament, Stinson was invited to the trials for the U.S. Women’s Under-19 Team.

Spring Track

Baseball Varsity baseball finished 9-9 overall and 7-5 in the Prep League, with a third-place league finish.

“Highlights for us were victories over local rivals Collegiate, St. Christopher’s and Benedictine,” said coach Mitch Hauser “Senior Jordan Smith hit a home run to beat St. Chris when they were ranked number two in the state.

That was a great moment.”

Senior pitcher Tyler Johnson, heading to the University of South Carolina, was a unanimous AllPrep choice, as was teammate Daniel Pinson ’14. Johnson made the first team All-State, and Pinson, who has committed to James Madison University, was named All-Prep and to the second team All-State.

“Our seniors did a great job of leading us and mentoring their young supporting cast,” said Hauser. “We relied heavily on Tyler Johnson and Daniel Pinson, as they were dominant on the

mound all year, and were also our top two hitters. They were probably the top pitching duo in the state.”

Boys Lacrosse The team had two strong wins in a rebuilding year, as Trinity’s lacrosse program grows and improves annually. Inexperienced players stepped up and provided leadership and team spirit. Coach Dave Reilly said, “This group of boys responded to a new culture of discipline, commitment and overall teamwork.”

Girls Lacrosse “The Trinity girls lacrosse team started the season as many of our spring teams did, in the gym,” said coach Margie Vaughan Snead ’85. With snow-covered fields outside, it took the Titans

a few games to gain momentum.”

The team earned some significant wins against St. Catherine’s, Bishop Sullivan, Sacred Heart Academy (Kentucky State Champs) and Forest Park. “The team was led by a terrific group of seniors including Peyton Allison, Abby Carls, Jordan Evers, Sarah Godfrey, Cammie Lloyd and Allie Neal,” said Snead. With help from returning varsity players Miranda Stinson ’15, Meredith Hughes ’16, Emmy Bowe ’15, and Annie Snead ’16 the team achieved a 10-7 record. Newcomers Christie van de Kamp ’16 and Ella Donahue ’17 became regulars in the starting lineup with support from Maeve Losen ’15, Anne Nelson ’16, Kristen Bolinger ’16, Emma Nash ’16, and Grace English ’17.

Neal, Stinson and Hughes were selected to the All -LIS team.

The boys spring track team had a balanced team that finished the season eighth in the state.

Elias Khoury ’14 (100m), Andy Chess ’15 (pole vault) and Henry Choisser ’15 (400m) all broke school records in their events. The distance events were led by Jamie Hiegel ’15, Steve Jean ’16 and Cole Shugart ’16, who were major point contributors throughout the season.

The girls track team finished the year sixth in the state. The distance group was led by All-State senior standout Molly Breidenbaugh who lowered the school 3200m record to 10:44.01. Newcomers Isabella Anderegg ’17 and Faith Hinton ’17 provided a boost to a sprint squad that was led by veteran Kendall Daniels ’15.

Nadia Khoury ’14 returned from injury to score points at the state meet in the long jump and triple ump and was state champion in the high jump, setting a new state record of 5'5".

Boys Tennis It was a history-making year for the squad, with Prep League titles for number-one singles player Justin Cerny ’14 and numbertwo player Hunter Clark ’14.

The top-ranked doubles team of Cerny-Clark went 16-0 for the season and took the league title.

The team fell just shy of the overall Prep League title with a regular-season record of 9-4, but earned a third-consecutive VISSA tournament berth. The Titans came back to defeat Woodberry Forest School at the state tournament, with the decisive final match won by Alex Fernandez ’18.

Luke Fernandez, playing at the number-four spot, posted a 14-2 regular-season singles record.

TES came back and defeated Woodberry in the first round of the state tournament, with strong performance from eighth grader Fernandez.

First-time coach Chris Brown said, “We were led by a quartet of fearless seniors: Justin Cerny, Hunter Clark, Taylor Kent and Ross Pegram. The Titans blew through a cornucopia of great

programs such as James River, Midlothian, Collegiate and Woodberry Forest. The biggest victory of the season came when the Titans upended two-time defending state champion Cape Henry Collegiate 6-3.”

Cerny and Clark garnered firstteam All-State honors, and Pegram was named to the second team. Cerny was named to the Times-Dispatch All-Metro first team for the second straight year, and Clark to the second team.

“We had a great group of seniors and some great young talent that meshed together so well, each of whom sacrificed many of their own personal goals to make the team better and had fun trying to attain it,” said Brown. “It was the most team-oriented group of tennis players I have EVER been around.”

Special Note: The Richmond Times-Dispatch names the girls All-Metro tennis team in the spring. Trinity’s Alissa Rosen ’16 was named to the second team.

Softball

The young team, composed of four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen, was coached by newcomer Andy Bender. Sophomore Matt Brassington played in the number-one spot for most of the year and averaged the lowest scores over the season. He was closely followed by Liza Lewis ’15, who put up great numbers all year. Both received invitations to the state tournament.

Veterans and newcomers worked together to make the softball season a good one in a rebuilding year. Freshman pitcher Alexa Gillert struck out over 100 batters and was named to the All-LIS team. Jordan Pepper ’16, new to Trinity, led the league in batting average and slugging percentage and was named to the All-LIS team and the second team AllState. Team captains Emma Benedetti ’16 and Brayson Nesbitt ’14 were leaders both on and off the field. Returning players Erin Deloye ’15 and Lauryn Goodlett ’15 were joined by Jessica Wilburn ’15 who played outstanding defense at shortstop. Suzanne DiLoretto ’16, Morgan Rose ’14, Meghan Burton ’17 and Kate Pepper ’18 rounded out a strong, committed team that had a regular season record of 8-8. Coach Christy Darlington was assisted by alumni coaches Becca Darlington ’10 and Lauren Jacobsen ’09.

JP Guidon ’14 brought senior leadership and also posted some very solid scores. Nathan Swift, another senior, came out for the first time and quickly contributed to the team. Eli Reece, a junior who was also new to the golf program, was also a steady contributor to the team. Jackson Sheppard, a freshman in his first year at Trinity, showed steady improvement all season and posted scores in several matches.

Proving that tennis is actually a team sport, teammates Hunter Clark ’14, Ross Pegram ’14, Luke Fernandez ’16 and Justin Cerny ’14 cheer from the sidelines.

Post-Season Honors, Recognition Trinity had four finalists in the Lexus of Richmond Pursuit of Perfection scholarship competition, which honors high school scholar-athletes.

Seniors Elizabeth Bell, Molly Breidenbaugh, Kira Tomenchok and Allie Neal (see photo at right) were among 30 finalists. Breidenbaugh was named the winner, and received the Lexus college scholarship.

Breidenbaugh and Camm Johnson ’14 were Richmond Times-Dispatch Scholar-Athlete finalists, two of just 20 students chosen from a pool that included one male and one female nominee from each high school within the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s primary circulation area.

PARTNERS IN PHILANTHROPY Trinity Episcopal School has partnered with the Anna Julia Cooper Scholarship Foundation to support students from low-income families who would otherwise not have access to private school education.

Supporters of the Anna Julia Cooper Scholarship Foundation make this possible for children in need and realize a significant tax savings as a result. The Anna Julia Cooper Scholarship Foundation (AJCSF) was established in 2013 to provide scholarships for students of limited resources, primarily from Richmond’s East End, to attend Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School, Trinity Episcopal School, St. Andrew’s School and other independent schools in Richmond. Individuals and businesses who contribute to AJCSF, and who pay taxes in the Commonwealth of Virginia, are eligible to receive a 65% state tax credit as part of the Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credit program. The 65% tax credit is in addition to current state and federal tax deductions for monetary donations.

“This is a great program for Trinity, and for everyone who cares about making quality independent education available to deserving students,” said Director of Development Laurie Hedgepeth.

“Qualified donors may direct their gift, given through the Anna Julia Cooper Scholarship Foundation, to Trinity, to be used for students who meet the guidelines.”

Trinity past parents Michael and Aimie Jones took advantage of the tax benefits and directed their gift through the foundation to Trinity.

“This is a powerful instrument,” said Michael Jones, formerly chair of the Trinity Board of Trustees. “This supports Trinity’s mission, and can make sense for the donor.”

The Emily Huffman McLeod Scholarship Award The first Emily Huffman McLeod scholarship was presented to Charlotte Woods ’16 at Awards Day May 30. The scholarship, a need-based award in the form of a tuition credit, is awarded to a returning student who has demonstrated academic strength, full engagement in the Trinity community, and commitment to Trinity’s mission, values and culture.

The award honors Emily McLeod, Trinity’s Director of Admissions who retired in 2013, and is fully funded by individual gifts and foundation support. Since its founding in April 2013, more than $130,000 has been given to support this critical mission. Emily McLeod was at Trinity to make the presentation to Charlotte Woods.

ANNUAL GIVING UPDATE Annual Giving 2013-2014 saw total giving of more than $428,000, the most in Trinity’s history. “We had some foundation gifts, and a few large individual gifts, but we also simply saw more generosity from our donors,” said Assistant Director of Development Anne Hurt. “All gifts work together to make for a successful year for our students.”

Each faculty member and every trustee made a gift, as did 70% of all Trinity parents. “We are so fortunate that our community understands the importance of making an annual gift,” said Hurt. “It’s an indicator of a healthy, supportive community, and speaks volumes about Trinity’s culture. Banks, financial institutions and grant-making foundations pay attention when schools have strong annual giving support.”

Trinity Annual Report is now an online feature. “We made the decision last year to be good stewards of our donors’ gifts, and stop printing the Annual Report,” said Hurt. “We’ll continue to distribute our philanthropy newsletter, The Power of Three, in the fall. f you were to ask one of our 101 graduating seniors about their time spent at Trinity they might mention the many tests they took, papers they wrote, presentations they competed or long nights of studying. However, what they will probably tell you were the most memorable moments are what salutatorian Ruth Blair Moyers calls, “the moments in between.” Her speech captured the times of anticipation and expectation, the

often-overlooked valleys between the peaks. In doing so, she helped make a special day about the small memories that are just as important as the big ones.

It would be easy to discuss and list the many achievements of the class of 2014.

They are smart, innovative, determined and unafraid to question and think outside the box. But more importantly, they value the friendships they have made and the lessons learned beyond the classroom during their time at Trinity. Valedictorian Elizabeth Bell reiterated this sentiment in her graduation address stating, “We are members of an extended family.” In her address Bell noted many treasured moments shared by the class during their years together. She mentioned, “Doing the snow dance with Dr. Aycock, playing Rocky with the jazz band, shivering at the Grand Illumination, laughing at corny jokes, listening to our classmates pull off full sets at Pach’s place,” just to name a few. “When we look back on our high school experience years from

English teacher and Trinity alumna Amy Tarsovich Carroll ’98 was chosen by the senior class as this year’s commencement speaker. Fittingly, she began teaching at Trinity just as the senior class began their freshman year and taught a majority of the class. She

However, two years at Tech came and went and she began to question her veterinarian career path and withdrew from the pre-vet program. “I had never failed at anything in school before,” Carroll said. A substitute teaching position during her junior year piqued Carroll’s interest, and the rest is history.

Carroll shared that the realization of her passion and love of teaching came through failure: “It’s okay if things do not work out how you originally planned them to. The most important thing to remember, though, is how you handle the failure, what you do after something doesn’t go your way that makes the difference.”

College Choices Reflect Variety, Selectivity and Achievement

The 101 seniors of the class of 2014 have enrolled in 47 different college and universities, after applying to 157 different institutions. “We guide our students to the schools that are the right fit,” said Julie Bruner, who shares college counseling duties with Chet Childress. “Most of our students apply to around five colleges to find the one or two that are a good match for them.”

The acceptance rate climbed to 72%, up from 66% in 2013. This year’s class looked beyond the southeast and sought schools in the midwest and west, as well as the northeast. Public institutions in Virginia continued to be most popular choices; 54% chose this option.

The University of Virginia eclipsed James Madison University (JMU) this year to be the top Virginia public institution choice for the Class of 2014, with 14% attending. JMU, Longwood and VCU have moved into second place with 7% attending each program. The College of William and Mary, Virginia Tech, and Christopher Newport University are tied for third with 6% of the class matriculating in the fall of 2014.

“This class was a group of knowledge seekers, musicians, artists, athletes, thespians and environmentalists,” said Bruner. “They were an inspiration and will be missed by the entire Trinity community. This class as a whole put great thought into their college applications and choices, which lead to the highest percent of acceptances in over seven years. They set the bar high and we look forward to hearing about all of their future successes.”

Trinity is proud to offer two endowed scholarships that honor the memory of alumni who are deeply missed by their families, friends and classmates. Both funds are supported by philanthropic gifts which are invested to provide annual scholarship awards. The F. Norton Hord, Jr., Memorial Scholarship and the Ann Randolph Jonas Scholarship both further the interests and passions of these two outstanding alumni, enrich the lives of the scholarship recipients, and benefit the Trinity community as a whole.

Loving memories, lasting impact Remembering Ann Randolph Jonas ‘97

ach year at Awards Day, two very special guests slip in, take their seats and wait patiently for their part in the ceremony. Shirley Jonas and her daughter, Kimberly Jonas Shumadine ’99 are careful to be unobtrusive; they are always cheerful and always pleased to participate. But their mission—to honor the memory of their dear daughter and sister, Ann Randolph Jonas ’97—is a poignant one.

In presenting the Ann Jonas Scholarship Award every year, they have chosen to help talented Trinity students further their education, and also to pay tribute to the young woman missed by so many.

Ann Jonas, who died in 2005, was enthusiastic, creative, and compassionate.

While at Trinity, she discovered a love of photography. After her death, her family and friends funded an endowed scholarship designed to encourage promising students to develop their creative talents. Since its inception, the scholarship has been awarded to visual artists, musicians, and performers. The funds can be used for college tuition, but may also be applied to non-traditional educational pursuits.

The winner is chosen each year by the arts faculty. Department Head Brian Phillips acknowledges that it’s a difficult choice, but a rewarding one. “What I love about the award is that it is so true to, and consistent with, both Ann’s and our school’s personality in that it recognizes and fosters passion, creativity, talent and commitment,” he said. “I do not think there could be a better 30

to a community of improvisers who have become my family in Chicago. I can’t thank the Jonas family enough for jumpstarting my place in the Chicago improv community.”

The winners have found a number of ways to capitalize on the Jonas family’s generosity. Katherine “Kol” Giessel ’09 used her award to buy an enlarger and viewfinder camera. She studied darkroom photography and art history at the University of Mary Washington.

She currently is an apprentice to a master picture framer, working mainly to frame art for museum and gallery exhibits. Joe Riley ’09, an artist and musician, attended Cooper Union in New York City. Angie Scott ’13 is a ceramic artist studying at VCU. Reid Barden ’14, this year’s winner, is a musician (percussionist).

Jack Schultz ’11 is an actor and improvisational comedian, studying at DePaul University. He wrote: “I’m so lucky to have the received the Ann Jonas Memorial Scholarship award because it gave me the opportunity to study improv at its birthplace with world class instructors, and it introduced me

Powerful Memories Presentation links the personal and the patriotic

“

Y

ou can be sure that the American spirit will prevail over this tragedy,” said former mayor of New York City Rudolph Giuliani following the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. While that day will be remembered by all Americans as the day the spirit of our country was brutally challenged, it was also a day where the resilience and perseverance of our country were never more evident.

“It is not the quantity of people killed, but the quality of people killed.” That is what David Novak, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Richmond Division of the Eastern District of Virginia and father of Nicole Novak ’17, told Trinity students during his visit to campus in April. Novak spoke to juniors and seniors about his experience in the 9/11 terrorist trials where he was a member of the prosecution team of U.S. vs. Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person convicted for his role in the attacks. Novak shared in depth his experience through the trial, and the master plan devised by Moussaoui and the other terrorists.

9/11 victims, explaining that he wanted to share them because each victim has a story. He stated: “It is not a number, but the special lives of those killed.

Think about the individual people.”

Novak’s presentation was part of the F. Norton “Norty” Hord, Jr. Memorial Scholarship program, established by family and friends of Norty Hord, a 1985 graduate of Trinity who died of a brain tumor in 1992. Norty was an avid participant in political and government-related extracurricular organizations and activities, and was a campus leader in Youth and Government while a student at Trinity. Social studies teacher Bob Patterson ’83 said, “The Norty Hord Scholarship enables the most stellar and interested students in current and world events and politics to discover their path by receiving financial help for extracurricular out of town activities like Model United Nations Conferences, Youth General Assembly gatherings, Mock Trial competitions, Policy and Value

Debate tournaments and Student Congress competitions.”

Friends and family of Norty sought to form a permanent program to honor their friend at Trinity and to encourage current students to pursue interests Norty demonstrated during his lifetime. Patterson said, “Having a Trinity student represent a school that Norty loved in competitions that played to his strengths and passions serves both as a constant reminder of the importance of politics and civics to a representative democracy, and to the ability of the area of social studies to promote awareness and critical thinking, writing and public speaking skills.”

Novak’s presentation demonstrated the power of memory, the sorrow of loss, and the profound impact that lives well-lived can have on those that live on. The Norty Hord fund serves as a bridge between a student who left us too soon, and the sweep of history that can teach us so much about ourselves.

More importantly, Novak discussed how the 9/11 attacks dramatically changed and continue to impact our daily lives. “There is before 9/11, and then after 9/11,” said Novak. Most of the students at the presentation were only four or five years old during the time of the attacks, but Novak posed the question, “Why are your lives so altered?”

Novak showed actual video clips and personal accounts of the attacks and their aftermath. Students were speechless as Novak also played gut-wrenching cell phone calls and messages from

Center Stage Titan Jazz and Art Festival & New Student Picnic

T

rinity’s annual Jazz and Art Festival, in its seventh year of celebrating a unique blend of education, musicianship, art, athletics and fun, found a new home at the center of the Trinity campus. “We moved the performance stage to Dunn Courtyard,” said Headmaster Tom Aycock. “It’s really the heart of our campus, and it’s the perfect spot for the heartbeat of the festival.” Bands from six local public and independent schools each received instruction from Tony Garcia, director of jazz studies at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), before taking the stage to perform. Garcia’s Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band was the concluding act.

But music wasn’t the only game in town.

Soccer and girls lacrosse games were held and student art was on display in the Perkinson Arts Center. A special group of honored guests was on campus, too: Trinity’s new students for the 2014-2015 school year were on hand with their families for a picnic lunch.

“We loved having our newest students with us, and wanted them to be part of this special day,” said Director of Admissions Margie Vaughan Snead ’85.

“I can’t think of a better way to welcome them to the Trinity family.”

Trinity’s own Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Brian Rollins, performed a polished set of jazz classics, with a number of student solos and vocal

performances by Elliot Hammond ’14 and Emily Gould ’14. Earlier in the day, an impromptu combo featuring Rollins, Reid Barden ’14, teacher Richard Harman and Dr. Aycock on the trombone warmed up the audience for the student acts to follow.

Trinity’s annual Jazz Festival featured talented performers like Callaway Sprinkle ’15, shown at left. Newly admitted students for the 2014-2015 school year mingled with students, faculty, music fans and musicians at the daylong event.

“This even combines expert instruction with performance, and brings together some of the best student musicians in the area,” said Dr. Aycock. “It’s really a one-of-a-kind event. When I see our students performing, welcoming visitors, showing their artwork and participating in athletic contests, I realize that this festival represents what Trinity is all about.”

Robin writes: “Carter Mayberry ’10 just graduated from Lynchburg College and is currently on a school sponsored trip in Australia. Madigan Mayberry just finished her sophomore year at PACE University in NYC where she is studying commercial dance and communications. Fraser Mayberry just graduated from St. Catherine’s School and is headed to Randolph Macon-College this fall.”

Jayne Dicus ’79 writes: “I am currently vice president of global business operations at LexisNexis in Atlanta, Georgia, responsible for the company’s global expansion efforts in Europe, India, China and Brazil. My daughter, Kristin, is a sophomore at the University of Alabama and my son, Patrick, will be a senior in high school next year. This summer my family is planning our first European family adventure — traveling to France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany — and looking forward to hiking and biking for two weeks in the Alps!”

Joseph Bliley ’94 writes: “My wife Nina and I live in Greenwich, Connecticut, and I work in Manhattan, so I commute every day. I am a managing director in the investment bank at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and have been here since 1999 (hard to believe). We have three children, Isabela (5), Joseph (3) and George (9 mo.). Isabela will be in Kindergarten in the fall and Joseph will be in nursery at the same school. We stay in touch with lots of classmates and are looking forward to being back at Trinity for Homecoming.”

Class of 1996 Kathleen Cochran Hausler ’96 writes: “I got married on May 10, 2014 to Chance Hausler. Trinity alumni in attendance included my sister, Christina Cochran Quinones ’90. Chance and I met at JMU, where we both received our bachelor’s degrees. He is an underwriter for Wells Fargo Capital Finance. We currently live in Atlanta... and once house renovations are done we hope to have a belated honeymoon in Greece.

Janice Khauslender ’99 is a nurse practitioner for Optum CarePlus and manages residents in long-term care. Her husband, Alex, is a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and is currently deployed in Afghanistan on his fifth combat tour. “When we are not working we like to enjoy the North Carolina sunshine and spend time with our pug, Captain,” writes Janice.

Chris Aycock ’99 writes: “I’m finishing up my second year as head of school at Ridgecroft, and my wife Anne is a nurse at Vidant Medical Center in the wound healing center. Our son, Tom, is a year and a half old.”

Adam Newman ’99 writes: “I’ve been married to Lindsay for seven years. We have two daughters: Olivia (4) and Callie (17 mo.). We moved from Richmond to Lynchburg in 2011. I work for Teva pharmaceuticals as a packaging engineer and am pursuing a master’s in pharmaceutical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.”

Class of 2000 Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00 and husband Jonathan welcomed twins William Jet Weiler (Jett) and Penn Rittenhouse Weiler (Penn) on March 19, 2014. Jett weighed 5 pounds and was 19 inches long and Penn was 5.7 pounds and 20 inches long. Big sister Anderson Leigh Weiler is two years old.

Class of 2001 Sinclair Brydon Kindle ’01 and her husband, Jon, celebrated the first birthday of their son, Jonathan David Kindle II, in May. They are expecting the birth of their second child in mid-September. Sinclair graduated magna cum laude from Longwood University in 2009 with a degree in art education. She worked in the pet resort business for three years before deciding to become a stay-athome mom. Her husband, also an LU alumnus, owns and operates a fruit business in Burkeville, Virginia, so they purchased a home in nearby Crewe, Virginia, in May 2012. Sinclair writes, “Since then we have almost completely finished the necessary renovation of the entire Victorianstyle home by ourselves, by hand... and, yes, much of the time I was pregnant!”

Christopher Ryan Katchuk ’01 writes: “My wife, Lauren, and I welcomed our first child, Christopher Ryan Katchuk Jr., to the family on April 23, 2014. I am currently working as a program manager for a company called LexisNexis. Lauren just got a new job in the finance department at VCU. The first attempt at traveling with our son will be in November so he can meet his great-grandparents in Upstate New York.”

Class of 2003 Christine Wnek Catalogna ’03 writes: “I’ve lived in Cleveland for the last seven years and currently reside in Shaker Heights (a suburb of Cleveland) with my husband, David Catalogna. I teach second and third grade language arts, social studies and science at The Agnon School in Beachwood, Ohio. I also serve as the director of grade-level website development and the ISACS Steering Committee chair for our current accreditation cycle. I’ve worked at Agnon since I graduated from Ursuline College with my master’s in early childhood education in 2009.”

Haley Farrar ’03 writes: “I was recently awarded a Fulbright grant through the U.S. State Department to go to New Zealand for a year to implement a research project regarding restorative justice. Restorative justice is a method of resolving crime and conflict centered around the repair of harms as opposed to punishment or ‘winning,’ and I happen to think it is awesome. I certainly could not have composed an articulate and compelling application without the foundations of my Trinity education, and so many thanks go to all of those poor teachers who were tasked with making my writing somewhat readable.”

Heather Hajek Hiner ’04 writes: “I am an English teacher at Glen Allen High School and I coach lacrosse. I got married in 2011.

My husband Kevin is a detective with the City of Richmond Police Department and an FBI Task Force officer. In March of this year we had our first child, Molly.”

Stuart Raper ’04 works at EarthCraft Virginia, a local nonprofit that facilitates green building certification in the state. She recently became engaged to high school sweetheart Joey Nuckols (Collegiate ’02), and they are planning a wedding for the spring of 2015.

Haley Halstead Lillibridge ’04 writes: “My husband Matt and I are celebrating our five-year wedding anniversary on July 4, 2014. We had our first child on Christmas Day 2012. His name is Jacob and he (along with our black lab) keep us very busy!

My husband works for the Department of Defense and I used to work as a mental health counselor... However, I am currently taking some time off work to stay at home with Jacob.”

Katy Pearson Straebel ’04 got married to Aaron Straebel on May 3, 2014 at Castle Hill Cider in Keswick, Virginia. Kristin Parrish ’04 was her maid of honor and Stuart Raper ’04 was also in attendance. Katy works in sales and marketing for East West Communities in Midlothian, Virginia, and Aaron is a project engineer for Corman Construction in Colonial Heights, Virginia.

Emily Barrett ’04 writes: “I will be getting married on November 29, 2014 to Thomas Hovis, also from Richmond. He is a graduate of St. Chris. and HSC. Since graduating from Virginia Tech in 2008 I have worked in Governor McDonnell’s administration starting as a political assistant and ending as the director of appointments to boards and commissions. I currently do political consulting for Ed Gillespie, who is running for U.S. Senate. I also serve on the Teach for America Advisory Board.”

Class of 2005 Katie Willis Reichbach ’05 got married on December 28, 2013 in Richmond to Rich Reichbach of New York. Trinity alumni in the wedding party were Ellie Donahue Boyd ’04, Elaine Gregory ’05, Casie Bennett ’05 and Matt Willis ’00. Other Trinity alumni in attendance were Matt Curtis ’03, Jeff Curtis ’06, Thomas Raines ’06 and David Staples ’05. Katie is studying art direction at the VCU Brandcenter and Rich works in the jewelry and antiquities business.

Katie is interning at the Martin Agency’s Kitchen this summer and is one of 35 students from around the world who attended the Roger Hatchuel Academy at Cannes Lions in France in June.

Class of 2006 Ashley Brooke Johnson ’06 graduated from the University of Virginia in May 2010 with a bachelor of arts in Spanish. She completed her pre-med prerequisites at the University of Maryland in May 2012 and then attended Shenandoah University’s accelerated second degree program in nursing. Ashley graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science in nursing in December 2013. Ashley writes: “I recently accepted a clinical RN position in the Residency Nursing Program at Washington Hospital Center in a Cardiology Intermediate Care Unit. I got engaged in April to James E. Crowder and we are actively planning our wedding for August 2015 to be held at Sunday Park in Brandermill. I currently live in Hyattsville, Maryland. I plan on furthering my education at the end of the residency program.”

Class of 2007 Page Dunbar ’07 writes: “I graduated from UVA’s School of Nursing in 2011. Since graduating, I have been living in Arlington, Virginia. I am a high-risk pregnancy nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. I made it to a few TES basketball games this past winter — the school is looking great.”

Holly McMurtry ’07 graduated magna cum laude from VCU with a B.S. in clinical radiation sciences on May 10, 2014. She is in Lambda Nu, national honor society for the radiologic and imaging sciences.

Sarah Goldstein Taylor ’05 graduated from Sweet Briar College five years ago and this spring received her master’s in the art of teaching from Mary Baldwin College. This fall she will begin teaching second grade at Bellevue Elementary School in the city of Richmond.

Morgan Taylor Pilkington ’05 wed Taylor Pilkington on May 25, 2014 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The couple recently moved to Richmond from New York City. Morgan writes: “After receiving my master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) from Teachers College, Columbia University, I taught at DREAM Charter School in East Harlem. This fall, I will begin teaching in Chesterfield County Public Schools. Taylor will continue working in publishing, moving from Oxford University Press to the position of associate editor for Virginia Living magazine. We are excited to return to our home state!”

Robert Warnerford-Thompson ’08 writes: “I am getting ready to start a PhD program this fall: I’ll be studying biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania. As an undergrad I participated in a summer research program funded by the HHMI at Washington and Lee, where I worked with my genetics professor, Dr. Paul Cabe, on a molecular ecology project, studying the DNA of tropical bats from Mexico to help assess biodiversity and environmental impacts of development.” Robert says he is interested in applying statistical mechanics to model cellular behavior: “…basically trying to figure out what every molecule inside one cell is doing, using advanced light microscopes and fluorescent probes. It’s a new field that’s being pushed by rapidly advancing imaging techniques, and I’d love to ‘ride the wave’ as we learn more about life at unprecedented levels of resolution!” “I still remember first being exposed to some of these concepts in Mrs. Truman’s biology class and am forever indebted to her for her attentive and detailed teaching,” he writes. “When I took a GRE exam last fall, I was still using my old notes from her AP Biology class to study!”

Matthew Rocawich ’08 earned his master’s of accountancy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2013. He works as an accountant for Mitchell & Wiggins in Richmond.

Corey Pegram ’09 started an online publishing company covering Virginia high school basketball and a basketball scouting service for college coaches. His company, Vantage Hoops, LLC, (VantageHoops.com) is up and running and his scouting service is called Pegram Scouting.

Elizabeth Holland ’09 graduated from Dickinson College in May 2013, on the dean’s list. At graduation she was awarded the William H. G. Gould Memorial Drama Award by the theatre department.

While at Dickinson, she studied for a year at the University of East Anglia in England. Summers while in college she interned at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, at the Public Theatre in New York which produces Shakespeare in the Park, and at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She is now working as a production assistant for Production Glue, a company in New York City which produces major live events for individuals, government and corporations.

Connor Bradley ’09 received the Convocation Award at HampdenSydney College in September 2013. He has gone on to become the youngest member of Phi Beta Kappa (as a junior). He will spend this summer in New York working for Pennant Park Financial Investment Company.

Erin Lowndes ’09 writes: “I am a freelance theatre stage manager in DC. I was the production assistant for The Washington National Opera’s production of Elixir of Love this spring and I have worked as the assistant stage manager for Forum Theatre and Taffety Punk Theatre. I am also a full-time office manager and assistant center director for the new Loudoun Arts Center in Sterling, Virginia.”

Louis Boehling ’09 writes: “After graduating from Trinity I spent a gap year in Liège, Belgium before enrolling at UMW, class of 2014. I completed a major in Spanish with a concentration in 20th-century Latin American literature and minors in art and chemistry. I am currently working as a graphic designer in Richmond while simultaneously 38

working on a children’s book that I hope to publish in the next year.”

Philip Tickle ’09 is the music teacher at St. Michael’s Episcopal School and also the director of contemporary worship and music at River Road United Methodist Church.

Kendall Denton ’09 writes: “I am the owner of The Goddard School in Glen Allen. I took over my mother’s school shortly after my graduation from Longwood in May of 2013. I am getting married September 27 to Lakin Trebour ’08, we have been together since I was a sophomore at Trinity.”

Jillian Flowers ’09 writes: “I graduated from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in December with bachelor’s degrees in special education and history. I’m currently working in Chesterfield County as an instructional assistant in two autism classrooms.”

I am a freelance lighting designer for dance, theatre and opera. I received my B.A. from William and Mary in 2003 and my MFA from NYU in 2008. Justin Garton ’09 writes: “I currently work and live in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a consultant for Dixon Hughes Goodman. I own a business called Queen City Promotional Products and am a partner in a company called Agile Coaching Network that does management consulting.”

Kelsey Lorraine Johnson ’09 graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s in urban and environmental planning and a minor in economics in May 2013. Kelsey writes: “I worked at a variety of internships during my undergraduate studies including the City of Alexandria, Virginia (Historic Preservation), the United States Department of Transportation, and Thompson Hospitality (Reston, Virginia) in marketing.

I completed a master’s program specializing in marketing and management at UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce in June 2014 with a study abroad immersion to Japan, Korea, China and Indonesia.

I will begin a project management position in Washington, DC at Fannie Mae in July 2014. “ Heather Gerrish ’09 writes: “I’m just concluding my year as a Young Adult Volunteer through the Presbyterian Church (USA). Through this program I worked with Iskashitaa Refugee Network in Tucson, Arizona, specifically helping with their gleaning program. Refugee families spend time harvesting and practicing English skills, and in exchange receive fresh local produce that would otherwise go to waste.

It’s been a wonderful and rewarding learning experience!”

Reunion Class Chairs

Class of 2010 Maria Davenport ’10 finished at Wofford this year with a degree in biology. She was on campus this spring to speak to Alice Phillips’s AP bio class on April 16 about the research she has done at Wofford on copperhead behavior and mice feeding behavior. She was chosen by her class and professor to present in Colorado at the American Academy of Ethologists. “I have to admit that this was a proud day for me as a teacher,” said Phillips. “She always wanted to be a veterinarian, but has chosen now to pursue a career in research biology. Wofford was the perfect school for her. Like so many smaller liberal arts schools, it has been a place where she could shine in having a close relationship with some professors and in getting to do research as an undergraduate. She is a lovely success story.”

Hannah Lieberman ’10 completed her collegiate running career for Savannah College of Art and Design at the NAIA National Track and Field Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She writes, “I was runnerup in the marathon, All-American, in a time of 3:08.56 and also the top finisher in the NAIA track/field championship in school history.”

Rebecca Felico ’10 graduated magna cum laude from Flagler College on May 3, with a B.A. in psychology and sociology and a minor in criminology. Rebecca writes: “My interest in psychology began with a class at Trinity. My sister Danielle and I are planning a trip to Costa Rica in July before I begin grad classes at VCU for my MSW.”

Class of 2013

Andrew Strait ’10 claimed the historic CAA Swimmer of the Year Award this spring at William and Mary, only the second William and Mary swimmer in history to earn the honor. Strait swam for six gold medals (three individual races and three relays) at the CAA Championships in February. His times in the 200m individual medley (1:46.59) and the 800m free relay (6:31.77) both set CAA records. Strait finished his career with school-records of six individual conference championships, four relay championships, and 10 total gold medals. He set numerous school and freshman records, and graduated holding William and Mary’s alltime records in the 100m breast, 200m IM, 400m IM, 200m free relay, 800m free relay, 200m medley relay and 400m medley relay. Andrew swam at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in three events.

Kyle Festa ’13 received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and will begin his midshipmen training during the summer of 2014.

Marlee Shepherd ’13 writes: “I went to Nassau for spring break with JMU and worked with an elementary school Uriah McPhee Primary School. We lead activities for all the grades during their gym period and taught them about healthy eating habits and nutrition. I am about to begin my job as a camp counselor for Camp Hilbert in Goochland, Virginia.”

Class of 2011 Kelsey Schaefer ’11 is a junior at George Mason in the BFA dance program. Last semester, she and fellow students choreographed a dance performance called “Stolen Memories,” which tackles the struggles faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease. “I created the piece in my Nana’s honor who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2008,” Shaefer writes. “I received a lot of really great feedback from people who watched the piece and have a family member who has been diagnosed with this disease.” She says she hopes the dance will provide a human face to this disease and bring more attention to it so that others can understand the struggle. “I have posted the dance on YouTube and it would be great if it could be shared with many people as possible,” she writes.
