HEAD OF SCHOOL Over the three-plus decades that I have been privileged to be a part of the Trinity community, I have witnessed countless dreams become reality. Year after year, Titans of all ages have come together to dream big. Through determination, community spirit and — above all — generosity, we have built a place where our mission is made real each day through opportunities for students to discover their paths.

MISSION STATEMENT: Our charge is to challenge Trinity students to discover their paths, develop their talents and strengthen their character within a dynamic academic community.

The completion of our recent turf field capital project is just one of the many examples of this continued generosity. The past year and half has been fraught with challenges and setbacks, but the spirit of our Titan community never fails. It is this generous spirit that leads to rich and meaningful life experiences.

I would like to thank all those that choose to support Trinity — whether that is through a financial gift to our capital or annual giving campaigns, providing a helping hand on campus, lending your expertise, or a kind word.

COURTYARD PRIDE

On April 15-16 in Dunn Courtyard, Trinity’s student-led Gay-Straight Alliance curated “TES Pride,” an event centered on positive representation of the LGBTQ+ community. During the two lunch periods, interested students and faculty could grab treats, posters and stickers of support.

The Science Society drew a crowd on an April afternoon for a model rocketry demonstration. Students constructed the rockets during club meetings all week and tested them out on the baseball field.

WELCOME BACK TO PACH’S PLACE

On April 20, guitar teacher Chris Markunas ’01 and the talented musicians revived a Trinity tradition that was temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions on campus. For the first time in over a year, the music of Pach’s Place filled Dunn Courtyard and Howerton Plaza today during lunch!

GOTTA CATCH ’EM ALL

On April 19, history teacher Lee Huss, Adam Banwarth and Trinity parent Tee Clarkson and seven members of the Trinity Fishing Club took advantage of some beautiful spring weather for an outing in nearby New Kent County. “The weather was perfect and the fish were cooperative,” said Huss. “Many were caught and some bragging rights established.”

In February, Daniel Eliasek ’21 and the SGA organized a Faculty vs.

Students Three-Point Contest. The competition consisted of teams of six students and faculty at opposite ends of the court. While seniors were the only class permitted to spectate, the atmosphere was electric as they cheered on their peers. Adam Lonon, girls basketball coach and assistant athletic director, won with 7 of 15 shots made!

EVERYONE LOVES PI

During Pi Week, March 16-20, the IB Seniors organized a week full of fun activities in celebration of the number Pi. Activities were a 2v2 Math Tournament, Sticker Design Contest, Pi Memorization Contest, and Pi-Themed Kahoot.

THE TITAN RELAYS

Taking advantage of spring weather in May, math teachers created a fun diversion to lift spirits and build community. Teams of students competed in a math-themed relay race. Passing the baton across Dunn Courtyard, they raced skateboards, spun hula-hoops and rode tricycles uphill — all while solving math word problems.

Maggie Berger ’22 and Calder “Spaceman Spiff” Sprinkle ’21 were co-winners of the 2020-21 Cornmaster Award for excellence in corny jokes during Morning Meeting on May 21. Here is a sampling of their submissions this year:

Two teachers have been selected by the board of trustees to receive the 2020-21 Faculty Discovery Award.

NEW POSITIONS Chet Childress is the new director of counseling. Beginning his 27th year at Trinity, 14 as college counselor, Childress will continue to guide Trinity students to discover their best path after Trinity.

Adam Lonon is the new assistant athletic director. A graduate of VMI, with a BA in economics and business, London has been the Trinity girls basketball coach since 2017 and was the athletic department’s site manager in 2020-21.

RETIRING FACULTY José Santiago has retired after 17 years at Trinity, where he began as a Spanish teacher in 2004, but spent the last 14 years as the “go-to guy” in the technology department.

Over his tenure, Santiago and the tech team oversaw a complete redesign of the technology infrastructure: “from basic things like connecting all the buildings with fiber optic cables and installing latest-technology ethernet connections throughout the campus, to advanced WiFi networks and fast, reliable backbone servers, all connected to the fastest internet speeds available in this region.” Santiago departs with a sense of pride on how the community rallied to tackle the challenges of the pandemic, recalling “the feeling of being respected and empowered to make significant contributions to the overall organization.” What’s next? “Traveling, when possible, and enjoying the company of Janet, the children and the grandchildren,” he said. “Every day is Saturday!”

Rick Hamlin ’96, social studies teacher, will travel to Liverpool, England to fulfill his lifelong dream of attending a professional soccer game at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium. “When I was in high school, it was very hard to follow European soccer in America,” Hamlin wrote. “It was rarely shown on TV, but once a week there was a 30-minute highlight show on the now defunct Home Team Sports network. From watching that show, I became a passionate fan of Liverpool Football Club. The club’s tradition, style of play, and working class roots all appealed to me. Ever since then, I have dreamed of attending a real game at Liverpool’s storied home ground, Anfield.”

“While I realize that the Discovery Award isn’t intended as professional development, I am sure that my soccer coaching would benefit from seeing the sport played at the highest level, Hamlin concluded. “This rich experience would certainly check off the number 1 wish on my “bucket list.”

Betsy Reid, English teacher, and her husband will travel to Spain (his first trip to Europe ever) to visit one of the Spanish chaperones that Reid met in 2017 on Trinity’s exchange trip to Madrid. Reid and her family subsequently hosted Silvia Diaz-Rincon on the group’s exchange trip to the states and the two families developed a lasting bond.

“In spending almost a month by her side, she served as a mentor, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend… I learned so much about life and myself in that time,” Reid wrote. “In addition to even more self-reflection and more wonderful experiences in Spain, I’ll have a chance to reconnect with my dear friend, whom I never would have met if I hadn’t chaperoned our students to Madrid.” Reid said the biggest lesson that she would share with students and the school community after the trip is that “opportunities for life and learning that can come to you if you open your heart to new relationships, open your mind to cultural experiences, and practice saying “Yes.’”

NEW FACULTY Torey Burston ’12 will assist with campus safety and security. Burston earned a degree in Homeland Security from VCU, where he also played men’s basketball.

Tom Condon is the new photography teacher.

Condon received his MFA from VCU in photography and film. He later taught at VCU, University of Richmond and the Visual Arts Center. Most recently, he has been teaching at Penland School of Craft in the mountains of North Carolina.

Nadia Hassan is joining the world language department as a Spanish teacher. She has BA in Spanish and Latin American studies from VCU. Before coming to Trinity, Nadia taught at James River and Powhatan High School, where she also served at the head of the world language department.

Olivia McGuckin is Trinity’s newest college counselor. She has a BA from Randolph-Macon College, where she has also worked in their admission office for nine years, most recently as associate director.

Joe Pankey ’13 is joining the technical support team full-time after assisting part-time during the 2020-21 school year. Pankey attended the University of South Carolina and Radford University.

Grace Parker is joining the faculty as a Spanish teacher. She recently earned her master’s in Hispanic studies from the University of Georgia.

She received her undergraduate degree from Lynchburg College and while there studied abroad in Costa Rica.

Jennifer Parker will join the visual arts department to teach drawing and painting courses. A contemporary painter, her commissioned portraits and paintings are in many homes and collections nationally. She is also the parent of three Trinity alums (Sage ’12, Sam ’16, Gabe ’19) as well as a former member of the board of trustees.

Maria Puccio will teach chemistry. Puccio earned her BA in chemistry and biology from Longwood University and a PhD in chemistry from George Washington University. She comes to Trinity from Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA.

Malcolm Bell was one of 30 coaches across the country chosen to participate in the NFL Quarterback Coaching Summit on June 22 and 23. The summit gave participants the BELL opportunity to collaborate with NFL head coaches, coordinators, and general managers as a way to help move minority coaches forward in the business. “I was the only private quarterback consultant invited this year and felt extremely fortunate to be a part of it,” Bell said of the opportunity. “Despite the summit being held virtually this year, I learned so much that I can implement right away into my coaching.”

TRUSTEE TRANSITION Members of Trinity’s Board of Trustees recently completed their terms of service in June 2021.

A WARM (WIRED) WELCOME Going virtual with Trinity’s office of admission in the pandemic year

2020 was the year full of adapting, revising, and adjusting many things that once seemed so easy and routine. The 2020-2021 school year was no different as the pandemic presented many challenges for schools across the country. For the Trinity admission process, this meant families interested in Trinity would not be able to walk the campus. Staple engagement opportunities like “Titan For a Day” and “Titan Night” would be pushed aside until further notice. “Our biggest challenge came from the safety protocols we had to implement to keep our students safe during the school year,” said Director of Admission Margie Vaughan Snead ’85. “Visitors were not permitted on campus when our students were here. This impacted EVERY area of our process.”

LIGHTS, CAMERA, OPEN HOUSE Well before the fall, the admission and communications departments began brainstorming ways to convert all in-person events to virtual events with a guiding question in mind: How can we give prospective families the feeling of being on campus? “We made sure that each touch point, or virtual event, they were being introduced to different faculty, students, and staff so they had a broad range of experiences to learn about,” said Snead.

With Open House as the first big event in the fall, both departments collaborated on a virtual Open House, with videos from seven current program heads and 15 students, each providing their perspective on programs such as the outdoor program, academics, the

arts, competitive athletics, community engagement and the IB Programme. “Our students really rose to the occasion and adapted quickly to our virtual setting,” said Snead. The virtual Open House event was filmed, edited and produced by Trinity’s in-house staff in less than 30 days and was aired via livestream in four sessions during the fall and winter. In a more traditional year, Trinity’s Open House averages about 175 families (approx. 520 people). 2020’s Virtual House attracted about 180 families and held steady at 70 families when featured at later dates.

actually present here on campus and being talked to directly by the admission team and Tour Guides. “With great assistance from our students, teachers, and Admission department, we were able to develop a plan and execute it in a timely fashion without sacrificing the quality of the production,” said Bell.

“Our students did a magnificent job of sharing their personal experiences about Trinity with the visiting students,” said Snead.

“Everyone involved rose to the occasion and adapted quickly to the virtual setting which allowed Trinity to welcome students into our campus life without actually being on campus.”

TOUR DE TRINITY After a wonderful turnout virtually, the next step was to allow prospective students to “tour” the Trinity campus while not physically being able to walk the grounds. “”Titan For A Day” and “Titan Tours” play a vital component in the admission process,” said Associate Head of Admission Sam Mickens. “Together, Titan Tours and visit days help us share the unique Trinity experience and feeling you feel on campus with our visitors.”

During Titan for a Day, prospective students have the opportunity to be a part of the community for a day. They are able to walk the campus essentially as a student would and join in on different things during the school day like lunch in the Dunn Courtyard and sitting in on a class in the Academic Building.

PARADE ON PITTAWAY With acceptance letters starting to roll out in early spring, potential future Titans waited to hear from our Admission department, and the school began to think about ways to welcome newly accepted families to campus while keeping our community safe. Traditionally, two highlight events, Jazz Festival and New Family Reception, would allow students and families to experience a fun spring day on campus. Instead, families were able to drive through campus in their cars during the Student Carpool Parade led by Chip Shelton ’89 and Rob Chaplain ’88 driving the Trinity golf carts. Students, faculty and staff all welcomed the visitors with handmade posters, poms poms, music from the pep band, and lots of cheering. “Our own faculty, staff and students enjoyed the opportunity to be out and about representing our school,” said Snead. “Our accepted students had a chance to be in the middle of our energy without sacrificing safety.”

— Matt Cullather, new Trinity parent Authenticity is always at the forefront for the Trinity Admission team, so having to revamp and think of ways to engage virtually could run the risk of it losing its natural feel. “Not having in-person tours and visit days was the most challenging part of going through an admission cycle during covid,” said Mickens. “Much of what we do is based on in-person interaction to give a personal experience to each family in the admission process.” However, with a robust technology platform in place, it allowed the admission team to use the various group meeting platforms such as RingCentral and Zoom.

With the help of our experienced student Tour Guides, Marketing and Communications Associate Malcolm Bell immediately went to work on developing a virtual tour to feature the many things Trinity has to offer. “Being able to get an authentic feel of what Trinity was like without stepping foot on campus really moved us as a family,” said Matt Cullather, parent of a new student. “We were very pleased with how Trinity found creative ways to keep prospective families, like us, engaged through the entire process.” The tour was shot from a POV angle which enabled the viewer to feel like they were

Trinity was very excited to welcome all the new students back during Orientation as the 150 new students came to a campus that many had never set foot on before, but it still felt welcoming and familiar. “It was with great assistance from our marketing staff, our faculty, and most certainly our amazing students that we were able to recreate our strong sense of belonging in a virtual environment,” said Snead. Albeit virtually, the Admission team with the help of the entire community, created a unique, personal experience for our visitors while sitting in their homes.

BRIDGING DIVIDES UR President imparts a lifetime’s worth of wisdom in virtual visit Baptist Church and was inspired to pursue music professionally after meeting Corretta Scott King. “Keep practicing hard,” she told the young Crutcher. “The New York Philharmonic just appointed its first black player and you could be there one of those days, so practice.” A music professor in Ohio then recognized his talent on the cello and taught Crutcher personally from the age of 15. And as an adult, Bryce Jordan, the former president of Penn State, told him one day over lunch that he should become a college president.

Dr. Ronald Crutcher, former president of the University of Richmond, has said some of the best lessons in leadership he’s learned have come not from the boardroom or the classroom — but in the practice room as a chamber musician. “In chamber music, you have to learn how to give criticism and take criticism — and obviously you can’t take it personally, he said. “And that’s a critical part of being a leader of any organization, learning how first to accept criticism and listen... and make your own decision — whether or not you agree or disagree.”

Crutcher, who is also a distinguished classical cellist and professor of music, was the guest of honor at a virtual assembly on the morning of March 31, 2021, invited to speak to students, faculty, parents and alumni about his recently published memoir, “I Had No Idea You Were Black.” Student leaders of Trinity’s Black Alliance Initiative, Chaz Sutton ’22, Chandler Grant ’22, Cameron Walker ’24 and Adele Wilkes ’23 introduced Dr. Crutcher and moderated the program with questions.

For the students in the audience, Crutcher emphasized the importance of strong mentors throughout his own life. As a child in Cincinnati, he heard Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King preach at Zion

But it was his experience studying music in Germany on a Fulbright that truly transformed his life. “In Germany I rarely thought about race,” he recalled. “This surprised me but it was only when I stepped away from life in the United States that I realized how much energy that topic had consumed. As a student, I’d spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how people, particularly white people, were going to react to me. It was exhausting. In Germany by contrast, I felt unencumbered. ...I was a citizen of the world now and I’d never felt so free.” The five years abroad also helped him appreciate being an American. After considering staying in Germany for good, he decided to return to raise a family. “I wanted my children to grow up knowing their family, knowing their roots, and being proud of their black heritage.”

Student questioners were particularly interested in Crutcher’s vision for the role that the college experience can have on bringing people together. “Residential colleges and universities should be crucibles for helping students learn how to live in a democratic society,” he said. When most students come to college, he said they don’t come equipped with the tools or experience to reach across cultural, racial, ideological, religious divides. “It takes practice,” he said. “It takes practice to learn how to have difficult conversations with people who have a different perspective than you, a different political or ideological perspective. And sometimes it gets a little uncomfortable, but that’s okay… You don’t have to link arms and sing ‘Kumbaya.’ It’s really about respect, basic human respect.

ROCKIN’ THE RIVER

Trinity volunteers and competitors paint the town green, blue and white at annual Riverrock outdoor sports festival

D

ominion Energy Riverrock, the East Coast’s premier outdoor sports event, was a little bit smaller and more spread out this year, but one thing was consistent, said Michael Stratton ’02, outdoor program coordinator. “The organizers at Sports Backers love Trinity,” he said. “For years now, Trinity volunteers have shown up in force to help make this event a success.”

While the volunteers normally help beginning paddling in the Brown’s Island canal, this year Trinity’s 50 student volunteers were at Forest Hill Park throughout the weekend helping with the running and biking events.

Four Trinity students, Finn Gardner ’21, Grace Woolwine ’21, Alex Pegram ’21 and John Woodward ’22, competed in the paddling events at Brown’s Island and Belle Isle, racing against both other students and local professional paddlers.

Gardner took home 1st place in the Downriver Paddle race and 3rd place in the Boatercross, Woolwine took 1st place in the women’s SUP Cross (standup paddle board), and John Woordward grabbed 1st place in the SUP Cross and 2nd place in the Downriver.

“Just to have one of our racers place in these races would have been a big deal,” said Stratton, “but to have three 1st place finishes is amazing. Overall the weekend was a huge success.”

This season was challenging, due to COVID-19, but very inspiring as 15 athletes qualified for the state meet. The youth of our team was actually the driving force of success.

They remained super positive and supportive of one another throughout the season. We faced an unusual number of injuries that plagued us from start to finish. We were missing key players on and off throughout the season. They took the field for every game with a positive attitude and tremendous amount of support for one another.

SOFTBALL HEAD COACH: Christy Darlington (9th season) CAPTAINS: MacKenzie Eggers ’21, Sophie Michael ’22 W/L RECORD: 11-4 Overall, 8-1 LIS BENCHMARKS/RECORDS: 2nd in LIS. Trinity hosted a home quarterfinal game, played in the state semifinals for the first time in school history. Mia Woolfolk ’24 finished with 7 home runs and 28 RBIs, Olivia Golliday ’24 had a .500 batting average and pitcher Ally Doherty ’22 logged 87 strikeouts this season.

We played one pitch at a time and strived to capitalize on every opportunity we could find. Beating a good St. Margarets team 5-0 was validation of our ability and hard work. The team finished with its highest to-date state ranking (2nd) and progressed to the state semifinal game, which we haven’t done in my 14 years in the program. This year was an amazing foundational season for us and we plan to make it to the state finals next year.

Dylan White ’21 led the state in assists with 18. The team finished with a winning record for the 14h straight year and made the state Final Four for the 5th time in nine years.

The team’s camaraderie and support of one-another developed throughout the season, to the point where our mentality evolved from focus on individual performances to team results, which can be a challenge in what’s typically an individual sport. Without any graduating seniors, the golf team will bring back a very deep and talented team that will undoubtedly have lofty goals. This group wants to win the Division I VISAA Championship, before the core graduates.

After losing out on having a full 2020 season due to COVID, the theme of the 2021 season was getting our culture back. That culture includes a family atmosphere on the team, an aggressive, attacking style of play, and a spirit of competitiveness and sportsmanship. Our team goals were to make the Final Four of states to never lose two games in a row, and we accomplished both. Big wins included beating state Division II champion Highland, and an undefeated Norfolk Collegiate team in the state tournament.

With over half the starting lineup being 9th or 10th graders, the future looks bright for girls soccer.

BOYS LACROSSE HEAD COACH: Chris McQueeney (5th season) CAPTAINS: Jack Jenkins ’21, Walker Ferguson ’21

Daniel Eliasek ’21 W/L RECORD: 4-7 Overall BENCHMARKS/RECORDS: First time making the state playoffs Division 1 transition. Jack Jenkins ’21 ended the season as the all-time leader in goals (109), assists (52), and total points (154) in Trinity lacrosse history.

BOYS SOCCER HEAD COACH: Brian Phillips (25th season) CAPTAINS: Rob Parlow ’21, Colin Madigan ’21 W/L RECORD: W-L Record: 0-3 (1 game played in fall) COACH’S REMARKS: Though there was no formal season in 2020 and Spring 2021 the boys embraced a “be adaptable, be prepared and be thankful” work ethic and persevered through several months of “skills & drills” training. The hard work was ultimately rewarded when the athletic department was able to schedule several friendly matches in November and March. Players and coaches alike shared a clear sense of growth and development, both individually and collectively, over the seven month period. Captains Colin Madigan ‘21 and Rob Parlow ‘21 along with fellow seniors Jacob Bowman ‘21, Mo Carpenter ‘21, Cole Hamlin ‘21, Ryan Paoloni ‘21, Declan Smith ‘21 and Calder Wyllie ‘21 set a positive tone throughout a most unusual and challenging year.

COACH’S REMARKS: The mantra was “expect the unexpected” as we really hoped we’d have a full season and knew once we were able to play games we’d be very competitive. Although the record does not reflect it, this was a very talented team led by a great group of seniors. They had to overcome so many obstacles such as delayed starts, quarantine periods, mitigation rules, and spectator limits — but everyone involved remained positive through it all. Our first goal was to get through the entire season healthy and the second was to make the state playoffs; we accomplished those goals. The future of boys lacrosse looks bright and that is a testament of all of the hard work the team and coaches put in.

Walker Ferguson ’21, Shawn Riley ’21 W/L RECORD: 1-1 BENCHMARKS/RECORDS: In addition to an informal fall season, the football team was able to play two games in the spring versus Benedictine and St. Christopher’s.

Although we only played two games, the team was able to build team chemistry, camaraderie and set goals during the condensed season. We were very fortunate that the administration allowed our team, especially the seniors, to have the opportunity to suit up. With lots of young talent, the Trinity football program looks to have a strong year in Fall 2021 and beyond.

COACHING TRANSITIONS After 10 years as the varsity basketball coach, Rick Hamlin ’96, will hand over the reins to Andrew Blazar.

After 17 seasons as boys cross country head coach, Marcus Jones ’01 will pass the baton to Will Cottrell.

“Being the boys basketball coach at Trinity Episcopal School was always my dream,” Hamlin announced in a statement. “ I never wanted to coach anywhere else; I simply wanted to put Trinity Basketball back on the map, enrich the lives of the young men in our program, and bring the Trinity community together to cheer on the Titans.”

A varsity runner at Trinity and Bucknell University, Jones began coaching cross country and track at Trinity in 2004. During Jones’ tenure, Titan boys cross country teams won Virginia Prep League and VISAA State Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015; the 2013 and 2016 teams registered VISAA runner-up finishes. The 2011 team recorded the largest margin of victory in a VISAA State Championship and earned regional recognition with a top 15 ranking in the south.

Hamlin’s tenure was marked by high-level success on the court, including 7 Prep League regular season championships, 6 Prep League tournament championships, 5 state Final Fours, and 1 state championship. The team won at least 20 games every season and included the last 4 Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro players of the year. “Those numbers give me great pride,” said Hamlin, “but they pale in comparison to the pride I feel in the relationships that have been forged in our program.”

“My heart is full with memories of classic games in iconic atmospheres, intense practices preparing for critical contests, and celebrating with the team in the locker room after big wins. By far my most vivid memories are the relationships I have made, and for these I am eternally grateful.”

Blazar comes to Trinity with a great deal of experience as the head coach of the boys basketball program at James River High School for the past five years with prior positions at The Steward School and Glen Allen High School.

During his time at James River, Blazar led the Rapids to their first ever Regional Championship and two state tournament appearances. He was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019.

“I feel honored and privileged to have been selected as the seventh program head for boys basketball in the school’s history,” said Blazar.

“The mission of the school aligns perfectly with my personal and professional values. I am committed to the school and its goals of running a first class program that performs both on the court, as well as in the classroom and in the community.”

“There were 45 individual state championships won in cross country and track over my time as coach and all of them were special,” Jones said. “I also remember the many breakthroughs of JV runners and what it looks like to see an athlete grow in confidence in the moment as they record a personal best and surprise even themselves in what they’re capable of achieving.” Of his aisms as a coach, he recalls: “I wanted everyone, from the fastest to the slowest guy on the team to be invested. When we lined up for a race the goal was that each athlete could look to the teammate on either side of them and have full trust and confidence in their sacrifice.”

Cottrell’s first year as program head coincides with what everyone hopes will be a return to “normal racing,” following a pandemic season that was limited mainly to time trials. Cottrell has been an assistant coach for track for four years, and assistant cross country coach for two years, having previously taught and coached at Cosby High School in Midlothian, VA. Cottrell competed in cross country, track and field, racing triathlon and road cycling at Gardner-Webb University and Appalachian State University. A two-time All-American Duathlete, Cottrell will represent Team USA in the Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Bermuda and the Duathlon World Championships in Spain. “My coaching philosophy focuses on developing athletes’ enjoyment of running, appreciation for running as a competitive sport, and developing positive habits,” said Cottrell.

Sometimes it takes a couple of years to discover your path at Trinity, but for Kate Hurlbert ’21, when she found her path in athletics during the winter of her senior year, the wait was worth it. After playing JV field hockey, basketball and soccer and varsity tennis for all four years, she decided to give track & field a try during the winter of her senior year. “After our first meet, my coaches began to tell me that I really had potential and if I worked hard, I might be able to get a scholarship,” said Hurlbert. “I didn’t really believe them, though, until after I had won the state title in the winter.”

That’s right, in her first season, Hurlbert went on to win the state title in the discus, throwing 29’11”. “All of a sudden, out of nowhere she was competing for championships and high accolades, knocking on the door of school records, as well as hearing from college coaches,” recalls Athletic Director Anna Prillaman. “At times she definitely had to dig deep to find the mental toughness it takes to compete at a high level — but it was neat to watch her grow in that way as well.” Next year she will be throwing for Brandeis College in Boston.

“I received a lot of support from my coaches especially,” Hulbert said. “They would stay longer after practice with me to work on specifics and were always excited for me and pushed me to work as hard as I could. I also received tons of support from my friends, who were so excited for me, as well as teachers and other peers who regularly congratulated me on my achievements.

Ready for the fall 2021 season, a state-of-the art new turf field in Aycock Stadium will save natural resources, while giving students an all-weather, championship-level playing surface.

B

ut completing the turf field project was never as simple as rolling out a green carpet. Construction officially began on May 21 with the excavation nealy a foot deep across the entire existing Aycock Stadium field footprint. Engineers installed an improved drainage system and the infrastructure needed to support the actual turf. Trucks then dumped and spread 200,000 pounds of gravel, more than most turf fields, to provide extra filtration for the water heading into the James River.

PAYING DIVIDENDS

After grading the surface, the first rolls of fluffy green turf and underlying padding were rolled out on August 10. Crews then carefully cut and stitched the multi-colored lines and markings for all four sports: football, field hockey, and boys and girls lacrosse.

“The addition of a turf field in Aycock Stadium is more than just an aesthetic improvement,” said Anna Prillaman, athletic director. It provides our student athletes the chance to play on a surface that is in line with other league and state member schools, as well as championship play. We are thrilled about the doors this opens for us in regards to competitive preparation as well as the day-to-day operation conveniences it provides the school.”

Finally, during the last week of August, over 200,000 pounds of sand and wood infill was sprayed on. This organic, renewable infill is safer, cleaner and faster than rubber. Brockfill™ is sourced from a southern pine species that is harvested and replanted on a continuous cycle. (The first students that got to walk on the field commented on the unmistakable smell of pine trees.) Unlike a rubber infill, this sustainable choice of turf infill is cooler and has a lower abrasion rate making it safer for athletes.

A turfed field also means less maintenance including painting, watering, seeding, mowing and use of chemicals and fertilizers typically needed for natural grass upkeep. “Just in the first year alone, we’re already going to see nearly $50,000 in cost savings in those areas,” said Joe Monaco, director of business operations.

The new synthetic grass field in Aycock Stadium is where our community gathers for athletic contests and school events. This campus enhancement will allow student-athletes the opportunity to hone their skills on a collegiate-level field while having the flexibility to play in all weather conditions.

Unlike traditional grass fields, which can go offline for days during rainy weather, the new all-weather surface drains quickly, allowing practices to resume with little to no delay. Prillaman estimates that turf will provide Trinity athletes with approximately 25% more practice time over the course of a year, especially for the spring sports. “A predictable surface is always a plus in athletics,” she added. “A smoother surface will also help prevent many types of injuries.”

CELEBRATE TURF TIMES!

The sun shone a little brighter on the new turf field in Aycock Stadium on the weekend of September 10 as our student-athletes competed for the first time on the new green carpet. It was a weekend full of green, blue and white spirit as our JV and Varsity field hockey and football teams took home big wins during the inaugural games.

We were thrilled to honor and celebrate our turf supporters during this homecoming-esque weekend. On September 11, guests enjoyed a special lunch and toast in the Speight Alumni Room room and were able to enjoy a beautiful view of the field from Cooke Balcony while watching the football game. Director of Development Anne Hurt and Director of Athletics Anna Prillaman shared special remarks during halftime to an enthusiastic crowd of alumni, parents, students and Titan fans.

“When I look at the new turf field in Aycock Stadium, I see grit,” said Hurt. “Not only because of what our student-athletes bring to this field every day in practice and during competition, but also because of the determination of those generous Titans who committed to this project. I want to thank all those who believed in this project and generously gave because of their love of our students and the Titan community.”

MAKING IT WORK With many professional offices still closed to visitors or closed entirely in the spring 2021, the annual process of pairing each junior with a host employer for their Junior Work Week experience was turned on its head.

Instead of spending a week on site, students completed an exploration project that incorporated many of the tasks students would have completed at a work site. “The new format gave students a chance to individualize their Junior Work Week reflection and allowed them more flexibility in completing it,” said Chet Childress, director of counseling and coordinator of the program. Childress also encouraged juniors to reach out to several dozen Trinity alumni who had volunteered to be ‘virtual hosts.’ “They had all been through the Junior Work Week program, they understood its importance to their personal and academic growth and they wanted to make sure this year’s students get the best work week possible,” said Childress.

Below are just a few of the pandemic-year Junior Work Week experiences, through the eyes of the students themselves.

Owen DeFrancesca ’22 created a TED-Talk-type project with Gray Thouron, the golf pro at Willow Oaks Country Club, whom he got to interview in person. DeFrancesca’s TED-Talk detailed the qualifications, career path and responsibilities of the position of Golf Pro, including management, coaching and hospitality skills.

“The best piece of advice I got from Mr. Thouron was ‘do something you enjoy,’” said deFrancesca. “He said you’re going to get frustrated or annoyed with any job you have but as long as you’re doing what makes you happy it’s worth it.”

Chaz Sutton ’22 and Aidan Wagstaff ’22 pursued a collaborative project called “so you want to be...” connecting what they learned from both of their hosts.

Sutton met Zoom with Kenneth Johnson, founder/CEO of Johnson Marketing Inc. “Mr. Johnson provided insightful advice and views on his industry,” said Sutton. “The most useful piece of advice I gained was to take each day as its own. Always wake up with the mentality to attack the day and get the most out of it as possible. Never just sit and lay back.”

Wagstaff interviewed Trinity alumnus Desiree Tunnell ’08, marketing director at Virginia Family Dentistry.

“The most meaningful part of the whole process was learning how much organization [the job] takes,” said Wagstaff, adding that the experience inspired him to make his own daily planner to manage all of his work.

Perrin Gilman ’22 worked with Tracy Sears, news anchor and reporter on WTVR CBS 6. Gilman’s interviews explored how the news has an impact on the community.

“Since one of the requirements for the JWW project was to record the Zoom interview, I thought that it would be a great idea to incorporate Tracy’s actual words into my project,” said Gilman, who creatively turned her interview into a video with herself playing the role of TV reporter.

“Tracy truly inspired me to look into being a news anchor as the work that she does to benefit others is so positive,” she said. “This Junior Work Week project has definitely helped me decide that I want to major in Communications in college.”

Chandler Grant ’22 interviewed the advancement director of YWCA who is also a Trinity alumna, Rupa Somanath Murthy ’95. “My conversation with Mrs. Murthy further affirmed my passion for women’s rights, and more specifically, creating spaces for women of color,” said Grant. “We bonded over our shared experiences of feeling isolated in a predominately white environment, and talked about what led us each to turn those feelings into a burning drive to create change. I’m forever grateful for this experience, as it gave me some idea of how I’d like to make my mark within the nonprofit sector, while also pursuing entrepreneurial paths.”

Grant said she hopes to channel these interests into opening her own wellness business and center specializing in affordable services for women of color. “I just want to give back and empower the women in my community and beyond.”

For Stefanie Jochman, English teacher, it all started on the night of January 18, 2020 in Downtown Richmond’s Altria Theatre. Jochman was one of a half dozen Trinity faculty and student attendees at that evening’s installment of The Richmond Forum featuring Dave Isay, founder of Story Corps, a long-running oral history project often heard on public radio. That night, Isay announced for the first time that Richmond would be among four pilot cities for a brand new project called “One Small Step.” The premise: bring two strangers together and have them intentionally share and record a conversation, with the aim of bridging divides and allowing common humanity to supersede political or cultural differences.

“That night of the forum was so moving,” recalls Jochman. “Listening to the One Small Step conversation that Isay shared reminded me that the change I want to see begins with me and my actions; if I want my students to practice thoughtfulness and civility, I have to lead by example.” Jochman reached out first to participate as an individual, and was paired with a complete stranger. “There was something really powerful hearing someone else read my story back to me,” she reflected on the experience. “Similarly I had to speak his story to him.”

Inspired even further by her own “one small step,” Jochman knew instantly that she wanted to pay this experience forward to the rest of the Trinity community. Her time serving on Trinity’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion advisory committee convinced her that these

“I learned that the people I talked to had at least one thing in common with me,” said student participant Ellie Daglio ’23. “If another student was considering participating I would encourage them to give it a try because you could learn something new and meet someone you might never have met.”

Trinity’s leadership in the One Small Step program was also featured in a June 2021 article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Columnist Bill Lohmann spotlighted both Jochman and her counterpart at Maggie Walker Governor’s School, Wendy DeGroat. “The RTD story inspired new One Small Step programs at two other area high schools,” said Jochman, “and StoryCorps will be consulting with Trinity as it creates materials to facilitate OSS programs in more schools across the country.”

This speech is dedicated to our siblings who weren’t able to make it this far: the victims of gun violence, suicide, and police killings; teenage mothers forced to drop out, those whose mental illnesses prevented them from continuing education; and the people in our country whose education is underfunded or denied. I hope that you all recognize the privilege it is to have made it this far and that you use your education to elevate others, rather than place yourself above them.

Our mission may be “Discover Your Path,” but the undercurrent that produces brave and passionate leaders like the ones I just mentioned, comes from supporting and celebrating each other.

This type of beauty and leadership stems from an audacious decision to be your true, worthy, wonderful, wild selves.

Personally, my most valuable work at Trinity has been my advocacy for under-represented students.... INTENTIONAL AND TOUGH The class of 2021 faces the challenges of an upended college admissions landscape with Trinity’s core values at heart Like everything else in the world, college admissions took on a “new normal” during the 2020-21 school year. “This was the strangest and most challenging application cycle I’ve experienced in my 14 years of working in college counseling,” said Chet Childress, Director of Counseling.

Colleges altered how they connected with students while students revised the way they visited and applied to schools.

What did not change, however, was the philosophy behind the process. Students were encouraged to identify what they wanted in a college experience. With the help of the college counseling team, seniors matched their “must haves” to appropriate schools.

The members of the class of 2021 will be attending colleges across the country. Most matriculated to schools in Virginia (51%), followed by other schools in the South (23%) and the Mid-Atlantic states (16%).

Interestingly, several students chose to take a different direction. Mirroring a growing trend of high school graduates who delay entrance into college, some Titans opted for a gap year, military service or artistic pursuits. “I applaud the students who decided to take a different path.

These students reinforce the importance of “fit” and epitomize the school’s philosophy of discovering your path,” said Childress.

The graduates heading off to college demonstrated Trinity’s core values as well. “This year’s seniors had to be a little more ‘I’ and ‘T’ than their predecessors,” said Childress, referring to “intentional” and “tough” in the school’s TITAN values acronym. “After everything that class of 2020 endured, they showed they have what it takes to be successful regardless of where they land after high school.”

The seniors in the IB Extended Essay program were honored for their achievement at the Senior Chapel and Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 27. Two copies of each essay have been published — one for the student and one for the school to keep on display for posterity. The Extended Essay is a component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. In no fewer than 4,000 words, students complete an independent, self-directed piece of research, akin to a college-level thesis. “The Extended Essay is such a unique learning opportunity — one that is open to all Trinity students,” said Head of School Rob Short. “By doing original, independent research and sharing their published findings with the world, students learn to think and write creatively and critically. It is a rich process that prepares them so well for college and beyond.”

With large gatherings still limited in the spring of 2021, the Visual and Performing Arts Departments received some support from alumnus Philip Tickle ’09 to help ensure the show would go on.

As part of his internship hours for his master’s in educational leadership, Tickle worked with Brian Rollins, head of performing arts, Amy Baynum Chaplin ’88, head of visual arts, to develop an online platform that would “ensure that the IB art students received the same recognition that they deserve for the incredible effort put into their art and music.”

Tickle used Google Slides to create a fully interactive art and music gallery, allowing users to explore different rooms, each one filled with the recordings or artworks of student musicians and artists.

“It was incredible to see the quality of work that IB students still produce at Trinity. As a former IB music student and diploma recipient, I fondly recall my own music performances and compositions,” said Tickle, who is now a music teacher at neighboring St. Michael’s Episcopal School.

“Seeing the culmination of that journey for another generation of students is really meaningful and was very gratifying. It was also wonderful to see the works of some of my former St. Michael’s students!”

We’re a non-profit that furthers pet cancer awareness, education and treatment. The main thing we do is help fund life-saving cancer treatments for dogs and cats in need. I love the job and the people — but mostly I love the cute puppers I get to interact with on a daily basis. Plus — now every single day is bring your dog to work day!”

LEADING WITH CARE David Buxton ’99 is the executive director of palliative care at AdventHealth Central Florida currently stationed in Orlando. “After Trinity, my studies took me through Emory University, VCU, Brown, and Harvard,” said Buxton. He then became the palliative care medical director at JohnstonWillis Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia before accepting his current position and moving to Florida at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. “I was charged with restructuring the palliative care program of 15 hospitals in Florida and overseeing providers including nurses, practitioners, social workers, and medical students,” he said. Buxton spends time with patients and families to better align the medical care needed and desired. “I really enjoy getting to know the patients to help them feel as comfortable as possible and craft the care needed with my team,” said Buxton. When asked how the pandemic has shaped the work they are doing, he stated, “We’ve really been in the thick of it and are trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Their patients are the top priority and Buxton also focuses on taking care of his team. “It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the world and the medical field through death, burnout, and provider shortage, but I’m hopeful that things can get better,” he said, “I have an amazing team and I want to support them any and every way I can.”

Torey Burston ’12 proposed to his girlfriend Victoria Le on June 3 at their apartment with the help of their dog, Zola. The couple is planning a ceremony on December 4 at Quirk Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.

Burston shared, “It’ll be a small ceremony and captured through Zoom for family and friends. Later down the road we plan on having a big time reception for everyone to celebrate with us!”

Michael Bannon ’16 writes: “I graduated from Virginia Tech in May 2020 Summa Cum Laude with a BS in environmental policy and planning with a triple minors: sociology; leadership and social change; and peace studies & violence prevention. After graduation I immediately started an accelerated graduate school program at Columbia University in New York. I completed this program and graduated with a master of public administration in environmental science and policy in May 2021. After working for my program as a policy researcher and program associate for the new cohort (class of 2022), I just began a job as a community planner: army fellow in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Katie Cantone ’16 writes: “I started my first semester at the George Washington Law School in August. I plan to focus my studies on public interest law, hopefully leading to nonprofit or governmental work with Spanish-speaking immigrants. If it all goes smoothly I will graduate in May 2024!”

I am currently studying higher education and student affairs at the University of South Carolina while also working in the admissions office as a graduate assistant. SALON, STAGE AND SCREEN Mac Brydon ’94 writes: “In 2009 three of my cohorts and I launched The Lafayette Salon Series which set out to create an event where plays and screenplays are performed once a month. This past April, The Salon hit reading number 200 with ‘Waiting In The Wings’ by Noël Coward. Even though The Salon still calls The Players Club in Gramercy, Manhattan home, since March of 2020 The Salon went virtual, hosting an extraordinary amount of Zoom readings. Out of the reading series blossomed Lafayette Salon Films in 2017 where we write, produce, direct and act in short films which have garnered festival laurels world wide. I was recently named Best Director at The Vesuvius International Film Festival in Italy for our smartphone short ‘An Emergency.’ The Salon has another short tackling the festivals — ‘Brando’s Spoon.’ Our latest has me again in the producer/director chair. Both of the film’s trailers can be found on YouTube.

I’ve still been fortunate enough to continue acting for TV and film through the pandemic. I have a featured role on a new episodic for NBC’s Peacock Channel that is due to drop sometime this year along with a commercial for Qualtrics starring Rory Scovel currently running online. Julia Lawton ’17 and Thomas Deutsch ’17 were engaged in March 2021 right before their JMU graduation in May. A January 2022 wedding will take place at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. Melissa Geissbuehler ’17 will serve as maid of honor while Emma Roberts ’17 and Grey Haneberg ’17 will be in the wedding party. The couple currently lives in New York City, Deutsch working in commercial real estate and Lawton working for a fertility practice.

Lawton shares, “We have been having so much fun wedding planning and have been enjoying this stage of life so much!”

Lucy Perry ’17 received ODAC player of the week honors on March 31 following a three-point week on the Roanoke College women’s soccer team.

Grace MacDougall ’20 was named to the 2021 dean’s list at Dickinson College. She is majoring in women’s, gender and sexuality studies.

Claire Magill ’17 received the Susan Locke de Nagy Award at Randolph-Macon college in May following the end of her senior year on the field hockey team. The 1996 boys basketball state championship team will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on January 14, 2022 in Estes Athletic Center.

The team was coached by the late Dale Travis and won the Prep League title along with the first state championship in program history.
