Fromthe Head of School Education, at its core, is about the future.

We as educators spend each day in support of a brighter future for our students. At Trinity, students build skills, try new things and learn from mistakes as they prepare for the next steps on their path.

So it is fitting that every few years we take the time to pause and reevaluate our mission and strategy for delivering it. Through strategic planning, we have looked inward at what Trinity does well, what needs attention, and how external factors shape the way we carry out our mission.

This process has been one of the most thorough in Trinity’s history. We invited everyone to participate: parents, alumni, students, faculty and staff — even community businesses. We reached out, we renewed relationships and sought patterns within the information gathered. We read books together and thought critically about the future beyond the realm of education. In doing so, we were pleased to learn that our mission is strong and more relevant than ever; it appeals to a broad group of young people and offers paths to fulfilling lives of purpose and a sense of belonging.

In addition, we have identified several exciting areas for growth and reinforcement, including: • Strengthening the unique school culture that has attracted so many of you to discover your paths at Trinity.

• Enhancing the campus inside and outside in creative ways that further teaching and learning in the 21st century.

• Committing staff resources to build connections and opportunities for students within the broader RVA community.

As you read this Titan Trail, I invite each of you to turn to the center section to see our new five-year strategic plan, entitled “Honor the Mission.” The plan is the result of over a year’s worth of work by dozens of people, with input from hundreds. I’m grateful for all of this hard work as well as for the strong foundation that allows us to be nimble and adaptable to whatever challenges and opportunities the future brings. In an ever-changing world, thinking strategically must be part of our core philosophy, as we seek to build future-ready skill sets in our students and ourselves. Through our support of young people and their families, we in turn are able to work for a future full of promise.

ANATOMY OF GRAY

VIRTUAL REALITY

The first play in the renovated Perkinson Arts Center Theatre “Anatomy of Gray” opened in March to an excited audience.

The hard work on the sets, the costumes and the actors’ lines was evident in this 1880s period drama full of mystery, love and loss.

Students entered the virtual world last spring while testing out the Vive virtual reality headset. Students experienced simulations such as a fish's perspective in the ocean and flying over foreign mountains using virtual reality goggles and hand-held joysticks.

Sensors mounted in the room additionally tracked the physical movement of users, creating boundaries so students could navigate the virtual space by simply walking around the room.

A favorite Trinity tradition, students and faculty entered 56 pies in the annual Pi(e) baking competition. The most visually appealing pie was tied between Anna Kelley ’19 and Felicity Davies ’19; the most unique pie went to Tolliver Mance ’19, and the most creative pie award went to Caroline Benedetti ’19. Tastiest awards were given by category.

Over a dozen Titans participated in this year’s Spanish exchange program. Trinity students traveled to Barcelona in March and their host siblings came to the United States in April. Both groups of students took time while abroad to attend classes in the host country as well as visit unique and landmark attractions in the surrounding areas.

Through all the wild weather — rain and shine — the green and white Trinity tents were out on Brown’s Island for SportsBackers’ annual Riverrock festival May 18-20. More than 60 student volunteers from Trinity helped festival-goers learn to kayak and paddleboard in the James River Canal. Four Titans competed in a two-mile paddleboard race in the canal, with Lauren Davi ’21 taking home third place among all women competitors.

LEARNING, WORKING AND SPLASHING To celebrate the end of the year, the 8th grade took a field trip to ACAC to tie in lessons from their Integrated Science and Titan Prep classes. They learned about metabolism, nutrition and different types fitness from personal trainer

FRENCH EXCHANGE STUDENTS Three students from St. Denis International School in Loches, France spent much of February alongside Titans as part of Trinity’s global engagement program.

The five Titans who hosted French guests traveled to Loches in July to complete the exchange program. They enjoyed visiting the school, sight-seeing and improving their French speaking and comprehension skills.

UP, UP AND AWAY A team of eighth grade scientists took to the field to measure the altitude of rockets they assembled in class during the last quarter of the school year. On the field, there were designated packers, launchers, altitude trackers, rocket retrievers and even media coordinators. The team had to consider variables such as the weight of adhesive materials, parachute release timing and wind.

BATTLE BOTS FOR TEENS: ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS

“Exit,” an interactive, experiential art installation by IB visual art course candidate Lucy Bolin ’19 was on display at the Art 180 Gallery in Richmond’s Jackson Ward last April. The sculpture invites viewers into a tiny room covered in reflective surfaces.

“I wanted to create a form of escape from reality,” said Bolin, “which is why I called it ‘Exit.’”

The Trinity robotics team faced stiff competition in two FIRST Robotics competitions last year.

Working with strict rules, limited resources and a short time period, students worked together to design, build and program an industrial-sized robot to compete in a field game against other robotics teams.

JUNIOR WORK WEEK Nearly 100 employers opened their doors to the 124 juniors participating in March’s Junior Work Week. Each student worked at least 30 hours as an intern, gaining in-depth, hands-on experience in their field of interest.

MATHLETES TAKE THIRD This year, through the brand new mathlete club, Trinity had four teams participate in the Purple Comet International Math Competition, which consists of very challenging math problems and a strict time limit. One TES team placed third in Virginia.

Three-Wheel Travel On your mark, get set, go! Titans lined the Perkinson Arts Center parking lot to cheer on students and faculty who rolled, pedaled and toppled their way through the annual Tour de Trinity. Team entry fees support World Bicycle Relief, an international nonprofit that provides sturdy bicycles to “improve access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity” for people in underdeveloped countries.

Team Titan Twenty-one athletes from the class of 2018 will represent Trinity in eight sports at 15 different schools this year. Each of these students were celebrated in front of a crowd of peers and parents in the Estes Athletic Center as their coaches commended each of them for their character, determination and spirit.

As a way to celebrate all student-athletes who continue to represent the mission of Trinity and its athletic program at the college level, a series of “Team Titan� displays have been added in the Estes Athletic Center exemplifying Titan alumni continuing their athletic passion at the collegiate level.

Over the River and Through the Woods irty-one students, faculty and alumni made their way from Bearwallow Gap to the James River footbridge during the five-day spring break hike. On a map, this year’s hike bridged the gap between last year’s hike and one from three years ago — allowing the seniors that have been on every hike to say that they have officially walked 210.4 continuous miles of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia!

Outdoor Program Coordinator Michael Stratton ’02 said he hopes everyone has a chance to experience the magic of the Appalachian Trail.

“Once you figure out your rhythm and your pace, hiking becomes a lifestyle.” Stratton took the group through many well known shelters, sites and scenic vistas such as Apple Orchard Falls and Highrock Knob.

Richmond Forum Welcomes the World All year long, Titans were in attendance at the Richmond Forum in the presence of global thought leaders. Through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Baxter Perkinson, a group of students is able to attend each Forum session as a sponsor would.

Additionally, Trinity partners with the Forum to create volunteer opportunities for students. These students apply to be Richmond Forum Pages, where they greet attendees, pass out programs, and collect questions for esteemed speakers. This year’s speakers included Barack Obama, Peter Diamondis, Glenn Close, Samantha Power, Joe Scarborough and Newt Gingrich.

Faculty News FACULTY DISCOVERY AWARD Elizabeth Kelley, head of the science department, has been selected by the board of trustees as the 2018 recipient of the Faculty Discovery Award. With the grant, Kelley and her daughter traveled to Ireland this summer to explore and rediscover their family’s Irish roots.

“Four leaf clovers do truly exist in Ireland! This summer, I journeyed with my daughter, Anna, across the Emerald Isle. We had some incredible discoveries in our travels. Reconnecting with the physical and cultural landscape of our 'home' is something that we will never forget. I am enormously thankful for the generosity of the Titan community for being given this unique and truly amazing opportunity.” she says.

LAURA WEILER GRADUATES LMR Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00 celebrated successful completion of the year-long Leadership Metro Richmond Quest program on June 6, 2018. Leadership Metro Richmond, founded in 1980, is a community leadership development and engagement organization with a mission to connect and educate diverse groups of community leaders, inspiring them to serve the greater Richmond region.

"This was one of the most enjoyable and valuable professional experiences I have had ... I am thrilled to be able to bring what I learned and will continue to learn to the Trinity community, and likewise be able to share with the greater Richmond region all of the amazing things happening here at Trinity,” said Weiler.

NEW FACULTY Malcolm Bell is working with the 9th grade this year as Blue/Green Coordinator, a brand new position devoted to helping students transition from middle to high school. Bell is a graduate of North Carolina Central University and founded his own business, RVA Quarterback & Skills Academy.

Katie Ellis ’13 is teaching algebra and coaching field hockey this fall. Ellis just earned her undergraduate degree from Bridgewater College in May 2018.

Lee Huss joins the social studies department. Huss earned both an undergraduate degree and an M.Ed at Old Dominion University. Huss taught most recently in Hanover County Public Schools.

Nathaniel Paul ’14, who has been working as a computer intern here since he graduated from Trinity, began full-time at the Technology Help Desk this year. Paul graduated from the University of Richmond in May. Laura Swiatek is teaching science. Swiatek has a BA from Vassar College, where she was also a four-year varsity soccer player, and received master’s in education from Ohio University. Most recently, she has been teaching chemistry and biology at Olentangy High School in Ohio.

Suzanne Winefordner is Trinity’s first school nurse. Winefordner received her BS from Barton College and her RN degree from J. Sargeant Reynolds. She has been a school nurse for Henrico County Public Schools and most recently worked as a staff nurse for the Coleman Institute. Trinity also welcomed Suzanne’s daughter, Riley, as a sophomore this school year.

TRUSTEE TRANSITION Several members of the Trinity Board of Trustees completed their volunteer service to the school in June 2018. Leaving the board are John Young ’83, Lynn Strader, Frank Barksdale, Ben Bretz ’97 and Kathy Merry. In addition, Marcus Jones ’00 completed his term as faculty representative to the board.

Newly-elected members are Kyle Hendrick ’05, Randy Sullivan ’83, Ann Marie Petrucelli and Lisa Acquaye. Elizabeth Kelley has been elected by the faculty to serve as its representative to the board. Lauren Keenan Flood, as Trinity Parents Association (TPA) president, will repeat a one-year term as TPA representative to the board.

Elected members, nominated through the board’s governance committee in consultation with school and board leadership, serve a three-year term and are eligible to complete a second three-year term. Serving as officers for the coming year are Rob Methven, chair; Jeff Elgin, vice-chair; E. G. Allen III ’84, secretary; and Charles T. Hill, Jr. ’98, treasurer.

WINTER 2018

Boys Basketball 2017-18 was another historic season for the boys basketball program. Highlights included going undefeated through the Prep League for a second consecutive year (the 1st time any Prep League school posted back to back undefeated league seasons), winning the Prep League tournament and taking the trophy at the prestigious Times-Dispatch Invitational tournament for the second straight year. The boys also logged a combined 8-0 record versus crosstown rivals Benedictine, Collegiate and St. Christopher’s, before reaching the state Final Four for the fourth time in five years.

For the second straight year, the team was undefeated at home.

“At one point, the team ran off 18 consecutive wins in route to a 26-4 overall record against one of the toughest schedules in the state,” said Coach Rick Hamlin ’96. “The Titans even played in front of a sellout crowd of over 6,000 against John Marshall at the Arthur Ashe Center (believed to be the biggest crowd at a regular season high school basketball game in Richmond since the 1970s).”

Swimming “Our team theme this year was ‘Live Strong. Swim Strong.

Tremper said she pushed the swimmers to “Honor the theme, commit to the team, put the team’s success before own personal success.”

Girls Basketball The Titans finished with a 25-3 overall record, going 8-1 in the LIS conference (2nd place).

Ranked No. 1 in the preseason by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the girls remained in the top spot all season long. In the state,

Both teams finished the season with over 20 wins in the regular season. The boys finished 4th at the VPL league meet, while the girls finished 3rd at the LIS meet. In VISAA state competition, the boys finished 6th, while the girls finished 7th.

Tremper noted that the girls team set five league records at the LIS meet. “At the state meet, Sydney Whiting ’20 put an exclamation point to our season by winning the 50 Free,” said Tremper. the girls maintained their No. 4 ranking, making it to the VISAA quarterfinals before falling to No. 5 Bishop O’Connell.

“Our attitude/team philosophy was playing in the present,” said Head Coach Adam Lonon. “Our goal each game and furthermore, each possession was to forget about the last shot, last turnover, last steal and focus on making the best next play possible.”

Among the team’s goals was to beat every team they had lost to the previous season, which they did, including the first win over St. Anne’s-Belfield since 2009.

Another goal was to win the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, which they also accomplished, making Trinity only the second team to earn both boys and girls trophies in the prestigious local tournament.

“It helped secure the No. 1 ranking in the Richmond area as well as cementing Trinity girls basketball as the top competitor in the area,” said Lonon.

Elaina Chapman ’19 broke the Trinity girls scoring record for most points in a career (1,552 pts.). Angel Burgos ’19 and Jaelyn Harris-Caple ’18 each scored their 1,000th points.

Harris-Caple also set the school record for career 3-pointers with 183.

Softball Despite notching only one victory in the LIS (17-3 over STAB in April) and two wins overall this season, the girls softball team maintained a positive attitude and displayed some of the best sportsmanship that Head Coach Christy Darlington said she had ever witnessed. “There was so much teamwork and sportsmanship when faced with so much adversity,” said Darlington.

Track & Field With a smaller-than-average team, the 2018 track and field athletes focused on individual improvement and performance this season, said Coach Ned Fischer. “The goal of the season and our mantra was to be consistent in our work ethic and competitive spirit, and to demonstrate steady improvement throughout the season,” said 12

Fischer praised the leadership of Morgan Williams ’19 and Logan Carter ’19. “Both achieved All-State honors in two events apiece, and Logan would end her season by defending her state championship in the 400m.” Mary Kehoe ’21 and Claire Gibbons ’20 led the distance runners. “Kehoe would end her season with one of the best 3200m times in the state and a VISAA state championship title in that event,” said Fischer.

“Gibbons placed 7th in the state 1600m and set a seasonal best of 5:44.” The team finished in 5th place finish at the state meet with only six girls competing.

The boys wrapped up their season with a 10th place finish at the VISAA state meet.

Donavan Goode ’18, was a consistent top sprinter in the greater Richmond area and set a school record in the 200m this spring. Grayson Kuhla ’18, Henry McLean ’18, and Andrew Duhart ’21 set many personal records across the sprinting and middle-distance events. Senior and five-year veteran Max Galbraith ’18 finished in 3rd place in the state 3200m, coming in under 10 minutes. Thrower Ben Slone ’19

improved his personal best by over 10 feet and ended the season with two throws in the shot put over 40 feet to earn 5th place at the Prep League meet and 7th place at the VISAA state meet.

The team accomplished its goal of making the state tournament, but narrowly missed making the Final Four with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to eventual state champion St. Christopher’s.

Baseball

Hauser recalls the first-round state tournament win at Potomac as the season’s highlight.

“We fell behind 6-1, and with John Godfrey ’18 shutting things down on the mound, we came back to win 7-6,” he said.

“We became just the second Trinity baseball team to win a state tournament game.”

This was one of the most successful seasons in program history,” said Head Coach Mitch Hauser, “only outdone in recent memory by our run to the state championship game in 2013.”

Going 13-9-1 overall, the boys were 5-5 against a tough Prep League schedule (3rd place).

In addition to logging several come-from-behind victories, the boys hit 27 home runs as a team, a school record. Brendan Houghtaling ’18 recorded a remarkable 23 straight shutout innings to close out the regular season. Ty Barker ’19 led the Prep League with 8 home runs.

Boys Lacrosse The boys lacrosse team finished the season 10-5, improving on last season (9-9). The team was

lead by captains Teddy Coyner ’18, Cullen Fisher ’18, George Pearson ’18 and Hayden Smith ’18, in addition to seniors Logan Roberts ’18, Dean Chambers ’18 and Drew Acquaye ’18.

“The goal for the team this year was to focus on the fundamentals, work hard in practice every day, and create a positive team environment,” said Head Coach Chris McQueeney. “A highlight came early in the season when the boys won the Cameron K. Gallagher Lacrosse Tournament.

The Titans beat Fork Union, Steward, and host Benedictine, and Jake Helsley ’19 was named in MVP of the tournament.”

Throughout the season the offense was led by sophomore

Matt Williams ’20 (48 goals, 26 assists) and team point leader Helsley (41 goals, 37 assists).

The defense was led by sophomore goalie Jarrett Wells ’20 who average 8 saves per game. “The seniors who have paved the way this year will be missed,” said McQueeney, “but there is a strong talented group of players ready to take the reigns next year.

Girls Soccer The girls soccer team had a strong season, making the state Final Four for the third time in four years and the state tournament for an 11th straight year.

Coach Rick Hamlin ’96 recalled numerous memorable wins this spring. “Winning at three-time defending state champion St. Catherine’s got the season off to a great start,” he said. “Other unforgettable wins included giving Highland their only loss of the year, and handing John Paul the Great their only regular season loss.

The state quarterfinal win at Norfolk Collegiate by a 2-1 score was perhaps the best performance of the season and propelled the Titans back to the state Final Four.”

“This resilient team took great pride in never losing two games in a row for the fourth straight season,” Hamlin said. “The senior class won the most games (55) in their four years than any graduating class in program history.”

“Another special highlight which was featured in the Richmond Times-Dispatch was our senior night,” said Hamlin. “When the scheduled opponent backed out with only a couple of days notice, we secured a group of talented former college players to play a friendly match against our girls.

Golf The Trinity golf team emerged as a team to watch during the 2018 season. After a regular season record of 8-2, they went on to a 3rd-place finish in the VISAA state golf tournament.

The team returned seniors Grayson Rainey ’18 and TJ Dillon ’18, juniors Patrick Galleher ’19, Gabriel Parker ’19 and Bryson Bowen ’19 and welcomed two first year players; eighth graders Griffin Winn ’22 and Garrett Kuhla ’22. Galleher earned All-Prep honors after a great round at the Prep League Tournament. Galleher also received the team intensity

award, while Kuhla was named the most valuable player, and Grayson Rainey received the coaches’ award.

Accolades Armando Bacot ’19 helped the Team USA basketball team bring home a gold medal in from the FIBA Americas U18 Championship this summer.

Bacot was also selected as the 2018 Richmond Times-Dispatch Player of the Year.

Addie Nash ’18 and Foster Singleton ’18 were among the 2017-18 SportsBackers Richmond Times-Dispatch Scholar-Athletes of the year. The duo join a select group of area highschoolers demonstrating leadership on the field and excellence in the classroom.

Elaina Chapman ’19 broke the Trinity girls scoring record for most points in a career. She currently stands at 1,552 points.

NEW ATHLETIC PROGRAM HEADS

Tennis Boys tennis kicked off the 2018 season with a win at Benedictine, a local rival they would defeat twice. The team then took an overnight road trip to play Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Academy, coming home with a win and a loss, respectively.

“With the leadership of our two Senior captains Davide Parmeggiani ’18 and Wit Ferrell ’18, we battled the competition and the poor weather throughout the season,” said Coach Jay Bush, who led

the boys to a 4-12 overall record in the spring. “With two close losses to STAB and a heartbreaking loss to Virginia Episcopal School in a tiebreaker in the last match, our regular season record was not the goal we had set over the winter.”

At the VPL tournament, the boys Titans finished above their regular-season rival STAB, and Charlie Aprahamian ’19 placed 3rd in his singles flight, sealing an upset finish.

Tim Johnson begins this winter as program head for swimming and diving. He has served as an assistant swim coach for the Titans for the last five seasons. Prior to joining the staff at TES, Johnson was the head swim coach at Richmond Christian School. He currently teaches social studies and English at Midlothian High School.

Tim Merry will lead the baseball program beginning in the spring of 2019. Merry has been the offense/infield coach at Trinity since 2010. In addition to Trinity, he coaches in the Piedmont League, a summer collegiate league, and a 14U travel team for Rockit Sports in Richmond.

More recently, Tim was instrumental in the founding of the Virginia Baseball Coaches Association and serves as its executive director.

Jessica Oakley takes over as the indoor and outdoor track coach after serving as an assistant coach for the Titans last year. Oakley ran at Midlothian High School and was involved in athletics at Virginia Tech.

Jessica returned to Richmond after working with students with special needs in Northern Virginia.

Steve Van Huss joins the coaching staff at Trinity after coaching all over the Richmond area and beyond. He hopes to build the volleyball team into a perennial powerhouse.

Sights for the Soul Africa trip touches hearts Trinity’s Global Engagement program offers several options for travel, study and adventure each year. The program, led by English teacher Maria Bartz, features exchanges with other schools, outdoor experiences like hiking the Appalachian Trail, and trips such as this one.

A

ten-day trip to South Africa usually includes a spectacular array of one-of-a-kind sights: lions and giraffes, sharks and penguins, dramatic scenery, powerful monuments, and a diverse population. But for 13 Trinity students, accompanied by faculty members Sam Mickens and Molly Sanyour ’01, their trip in June 2018 was more about things unseen.

The trip started with a visit to a township — one of the segregated areas established in the era of apartheid for nonwhite race groups. The townships continue to be largely underdeveloped and areas of poverty. Despite the grim history, the mood was joyful. “The people of South Africa, in particular the people of color, carry themselves with a cultural pride, humility, and cultural self-confidence that I had yet to experience,” said Mickens. “They were so happy with what they had.

The visit to Robben Island was sobering, startling and haunting for the Trinity visitors. The island, in Table Bay offshore of Cape Town, was used by the South African government as a prison for political prisoners and convicted criminals from 1961 until the mid1990’s. Nelson Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned there. “I cried at Robben Island,” said Sanyour. “Our tour guide was a past prisoner there, yet he was positive and optimistic. His light was so bright for what he had endured.”

The safari experience included jeep rides through the grasslands populated by giraffes and lions. “The terrain… being on the jeep was amazing,” said Sanyour. “The sunset was magical.”

Mark Wheeler ’19 became the informal official photographer and made sure the highlights were captured.

Still, it was the people that Titans encountered that made the most impact. “It was interesting to see how far the country has evolved since apartheid after visiting Robben Island,” said Sydney Whiting ’20. “On every street corner there is a burst of culture from music to dancing to artwork."

He also saw evidence of that pride, dignity and respect for others in the Trinity students. “I was proud of our kids,” he said. “They rose to every occasion.”

Seeing a nation move forward from a history of racial oppression was life-changing.

Mickens was also struck by the attitude and outlook of those he encountered.

“Despite decades of poverty and abuse, the people I met were optimistic about the direction of the country and their opportunities for a better life,” he said.

In the days that followed, the group went on a safari, saw great white sharks, climbed Table Mountain, and visited a penguin colony. They played pickup soccer and basketball with local students, participated in a drum circle and visited a school.

Seeing a nation move forward from a history of racial oppression was lifechanging. “What I found most fascinating was the willingness of the people to confront the history of apartheid and truthfully engage in dialogue related to racial and social injustice,” said Mickens. He added that he had hopes for conveying to his own son and daughter some of what he learned. “I would love for my kids to see people of all races who approach their lot in life with pride, cultural confidence, and a belief they achieve success no matter their current status in life.”

A Path for the Future Building a roadmap for ongoing strategic strength

W

hen most schools embark on a strategic planning process, it is usually the job of a small group of trustees and the head of school to write a prescriptive list of tasks for the next five years. In 2017-18, Trinity was determined to break that mold and build a strategy that was inclusive, datadriven and adaptable to future needs.

The result is “Honor the Mission,” a thorough roadmap in five parts, each of which specifies five outcomes to be achieved over the next five years. The final theme, “Building Strategic Strength” aims to equip faculty, staff and students with the skills necessary to apply strategic thinking to their own work and to Trinity’s ongoing success.

“One of the things we learned clearly from the survey data is that our mission is strong and the power of ‘Discover Your Path’ endures,” said trustee Chair Rob Methven, “That’s why I love the title ‘Honor the Mission.’ Everything inside the plan aims to strengthen, support and build upon our unique and cherished mission.”

The process began in early 2017, with extensive surveys and research conducted to understand the views and needs of the school community along with Trinity’s place in the local and national school landscape. In the fall of 2017, a core design team composed of teachers, administrators and trustees, worked to synthesize the data, gain additional feedback from the entire faculty and refine strategic themes to

respond, inspire and validate the responses of all stakeholders. Over the next five years, through 2023, small groups will take on each of the nearly 25 outcomes, building appropriate measures of completion.

Guiding the Trinity team was Bob Kelley, a strategic brand consultant and assistant professor of management in the VCU School of Business and VCU Brand Center. “Trinity is amazing,” said Kelley. “Whether with the board, the design committee or within the faculty workshops, there was a high level of thinking, discourse and intellect that I rarely see and I found very refreshing. There is a true curiosity to determine the ‘why’ behind everything.

This is one of your greatest strengths as a school — a natural curiosity.”

“No other school I’ve worked with has even taken the time to survey all of their students,” said Kelley. “That alone says a lot about the Trinity leadership’s curiosity and willingness to learn.”

Selected by the board of trustees to oversee the process was Trinity trustee and parent Beth Nash. A major outcome of the plan will be for the entire school — faculty, administration and students — to continue to develop what Nash calls “strategic thinking muscles” as the school plots a holistic course for the future and integrates strategic thinking into the fibers of Trinity’s culture. “This is something that we believe so strongly will help us to continue to fulfill our mission in a competitive way that it is a key to our success as an independent learning organizations in the Richmond area.”

Nash is especially proud of an open and collaborative process that sought so much data from every constituency, including alumni, all parents, all students and partner organizations in the wider Richmond community. “We took the time to read every single response,” she said. “That became the foundation for everything else that we did.”

“This is just the beginning,” says Nash, excitedly. “There is still a lot to learn, but we know what we need to do, and now we just have to do it.”

ood morning. Today, as every year, is a wonderful day for Trinity and for the entire graduating class and their families. It’s also a wonderful day for our family, because Liam is here in the graduating class. What’s more exciting is that Liam is the last of our five children to graduate from Trinity.

So thank you, thank you Trinity. I wanted to take a few minutes this morning and tell you what Anne and I have found in our 12 years here attending Trinity.

I’ll start with Einstein’s definition of insanity. It goes something like, doing the same thing five times over looking for the same result is insane. But the beautiful thing is this, we didn’t get the same result! It wasn’t insane. Five children came here from the same family, five children had different experiences here, different highs, different lows. It wasn't all perfect — this is high school after all. Five children went to five different colleges and are embarking on five different paths. I don't know if our family of five here is statistically valid, but I would submit it as evidence that Trinity is succeeding in its mission. And we love that. That’s why we kept coming back.

When we first came here in 2006, wondering was Trinity right for our oldest, let me just be polite and say that the campus tour was a little shorter in those days. We hadn’t lived in Richmond very long, so we asked friends who were parents or former parents from Trinity, ‘what’s up with Trinity’? Everyone of them said, there was more to Trinity than meets the eye.

The word that kept coming up was “family.” I want to give you a little bit of a lesson of my culture and define family in a different way this morning.

I want to give you a word from the Maori language in New Zealand which is: Whanau [FAH-now]. If you look up whanau in the dictionary you might see the first literal definition is “extended family” but it is so much more than second cousins and great uncles and aunts. In New Zealand culture, in Maori culture, whanau is so much more.

What it’s come to mean is its the bond that grows between a group of people working for a common goal. They share values, they change values along the way. They share the successes and the failures, they celebrate the good times, they mourn together in the bad times. It’s significant to me that whanau includes the living and the deceased.

Whanau is at the core of the tribe or in this case our school, working to ensure it grows and is continually successful.

This is whanau. We are whanau.

So for the graduating class — I told you I graduated in 1979, and I sat in a gym, not quite as nice as this, but if you asked me that morning, where I was going, what I was doing, I had a plan. I knew where I was going to school, I knew what I wanted to study, I was pretty sure I knew where I wanted to work when I graduated. I was going to work in New Zealand for three years, travel overseas work for a few years, come back and live in my hometown. So now, standing here 8,832 miles from that gymnasium, you could say that plan failed. But it didn't matter because I found home here. I found my whanau here.

So if you’re sitting here today with a plan, and you know where you're going, that’s great. If you’re sitting here nervous about what the next act is for you, that’s great too. All I ask is you take one step at a time… and enjoy the view… because it can be a very long road.

Swan Songs At graduation, a poetic serenade for the class of 2018

I

Invoking song lyrics, poetry — alongside a few mathematical analogies — speakers at the 44th Trinity graduation looked back, while looking ahead. Reflecting on four years of familylike support, graduates and their mentors paused to cherish their time together.

In the same moment, they spoke with confidence about taking the next steps in life’s journey, where choices will come with risk but lead to personal discovery and fulfillment.

Trustee Chair Rob Methven called upon his memories as a high school senior in 1979, when the Sister Sledge anthem “We are Family” dominated the radio waves. He compared it to the concept of whanau, or “extended family,” from his native New Zealand. “[It is] the bond that grows between a

group working for a common goal,” he said. “They share values, they change values along the way. They share the successes and the failures, they celebrate the good times, they mourn together in the bad times… This is whanau.

We are whanau.”

Also inspired by song lyrics, Addie Nash ’18, salutatorian, chose the Coldplay anthem “Up and Up” — and it’s refrain echoing the word “together” — to summarize how the class of 2018 had conquered challenges, overcome sadness and built their school community… together. “We wouldn’t be the students, the athletes, the artists, the musicians or the people we are today without each other,” Nash said. “You have to brush off the little setbacks and keep your eye on the end goal, because I truly believe that as classmates, friends, Titans and the class of 2018, the only direction we can go from here is up and up and up.”

Country star Trace Adkins struck the right chord for Virginia Allen ’18, valedictorian. His song “You’re Gonna Miss This” reminds us: “These are some good times / So take a good look around / You may not know it now / But you’re gonna miss this.”

“We have no doubt left our mark on Trinity, but Trinity has also left its mark on us,” said Allen. “We have taken risks because there was value in it, and our teachers and classmates wanted us to grow and were willing to support us through the challenges we have faced along the way.”

Michael Stratton ’02, science teacher and head of the Trinity Outdoor Program, was elected by the class of 2018 to deliver the keynote address.

He echoed Allen’s take on the value of taking appropriate risks.

“Just driving down I-81 to get to college is a risk. Picking your major — what if you’re wrong? That’s a risk,” he said. “But what if you’re right? Or what if it takes you down a path that leads you to what’s right.”

Stratton, who has taught calculus, physics and geography, continued: “When I look at all of you, I see vectors, with magnitude and direction... Some of you have more magnitude and direction than others. [Some of you] know exactly what you want to how to make it happen. Some of you have already chosen a direction with confidence, and some of you change your direction on a daily basis.”

“From this stage, you have this amazing opportunity to create whoever you want to be, but first think about how you are the way that you are,” Stratton concluded. “In our last hour here together as a Trinity family, I ask that you be proud of who you are and how you got here. This stage is one of many start lines, but on this stage you get a clean slate. So get ready, get set and go fill those unforgiving minutes with whatever makes you proud.”

Head of School Rob Short dedicated his speech to Wood’s memory, invoking three traits of Christian’s that he encouraged them to emulate: kindness; a keen sense of wonder; and a love of nature. “Aim for these traits,” Short told this year’s graduates, “and you will create a rich framework for your life.”

Early in the ceremony, before delivering his address, Stratton read a poem in tribute to Christian Wood ’18, a beloved member of the graduating class who had died in February while paddling with a friend on the James River. “If” by Rudyard Kipling, includes the lines: “...If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, And treat those two impostors just the same…”

Following the reading, Alison Wood ’17 was called to the stage to accept a diploma on behalf of her late younger brother. In his welcoming remarks,

The College Landscape: Smoothing

the Way

Does discovery stop at graduation? Not according to Director of College Counseling Dan Geary. “When we look at the class of 2018, we see very clearly that the urge to find the right path is taking our students to the right colleges and universities,” he said. While the college application and selection process continues to be complex and challenging, the Trinity approach helps smooth the way. “Chet Childress and I believe that with the right information, students and their families can navigate the process with comfort and clarity.”

Geary points out that colleges and universities are nimble in the way they respond to surges in applications or to demographic changes, making each year’s landscape different. “Colleges will make short-term adjustments to their admissions strategy each year. That means our students have to look broadly at possibilities and potential,” he said. “A focus on one school can be limiting.” Still, he said, Trinity students tend to find that the right path emerges. “We see that our students do indeed find the right fit,” he said. “And that’s what matters the most to us.” Trinity’s emphasis on future-ready skills means that students are looking beyond simple admission numbers, and thinking more about lifelong learning.

The 117 graduates of the class of 2018 earned nearly 347 letters of acceptance from 168 different colleges and universities in 23 states. In the fall of 2018, these students will attend classes at 51 different schools in 15 states including nearby colleges and universities in Virginia and North Carolina, and far-away schools in Utah, Florida, New York, Illinois, South Carolina, Colorado, Missouri, Georgia and others. They will study such diverse subjects as aeronautics, biomedical engineering, and sound design; and more traditional fields such as English, mathematics, chemistry and business.

Trinity’s emphasis on future-ready skills means that students are looking beyond simple admission numbers, and thinking more about lifelong learning.

Bound For Posterity The seniors in the IB Extended Essay program received official bound copies of their work in Morning Meeting on April 26. Two copies of each essay were published — one for the student and one for the school to keep on display for posterity.

The Extended Essay is a component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. In no fewer than 4,000 words, students complete an independent, self-directed piece of research, akin to a collegelevel thesis.

“The Extended Essay is such a unique learning opportunity — one that is open to all Trinity students,” said Head of School Rob Short. “By doing original, independent research and sharing their published findings with the world, students learn to think and write creatively and critically. It is a rich process that prepares them so well for college and beyond.”

Mary Evans ’82 and husband, Tom Cantone, tagged along on their daughter Katie Cantone’s ’16 study abroad adventure by linking up with her in Valencia, Spain, where she studied this spring. Mary and Tom spent some time in Paris and Barcelona before visiting Valencia, where Katie greeted them with big hugs and a customized tour of the city. Dinner with Katie’s host family was a highlight of the visit. The threesome took off for London, spending a week touring the city, as well as Oxford and Windsor.

Ben Bretz ’97 and wife, Katherine, welcomed their fourth child, William, in February.

TiTan Hoopla It was a festive Friday in January for the Titan Hoopla, as Titans of all ages — including alumni from near and far — packed the Estes Athletic Center to enjoy a home win for the boys varsity basketball team versus St. Christopher’s. Halftime entertainment featured the biannual baby race, as alumni and faculty children competed for the title of toughest toddler. The evening concluded with an off-campus gathering for alumni, faculty and coaches.

Matthew Mikula ’00 writes: “My son, McKinley “Mac” James Mikula, was baptized on April 8 at St. James’s Episcopal Church in Richmond. Uncles Lane Mikula ’02 and Hobie Mikula ’08 and Aunt Sarah were present as were both sets of grandparents and other family members.

Uncle Lane, his fiancé, Heemin Jee, Aunt Sarah and Uncle JB Bradshaw served as godparents. Mac will turn 1 on September 16 and loves laughing with his sister Laughton, age 3.”

Class of 2003 Clay Broga ’03 writes: “Hyundai wanted to profile their customers who exemplify their theme ‘Better Drives Us.’ So we told my sister’s, Sarah Broga ’00, story of overcoming barriers in her life and how she took her struggles to uniquely help others. I directed the video. My company is Freethink. We’re a media company (you can think of us like Vice meets TED). We tell the stories of entrepreneurs, innovators and activists who are thinking differently and making a difference.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the next generation of leaders on their journeys to change the world. Our videos get about 1 million views per video, and we have hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

Our most popular video is about an innovative school principal (28 million views) and our most popular series is Superhuman which is in its fourth season right now. Our team at Freethink is 25 people, and we have offices in Washington, D.C. and New York. Andrew Garber ’03 is our lead animator and editor and has also directed an incredible serious called ‘Wrong.’ Also, Adam Feuerman ’00 has been shooting some videos with us too!”

Kristen Grotos Spain ’03 and husband Josh Spain ’00 welcomed their third child, Clara Elizabeth on March 7.

Her big brothers, Walker and Charlie, were very excited to meet her.

Richmond Ad Person of the Year: John Mills ’90 Trinity trustee and alum John Mills ’90 was named “Ad Person of the Year” in April 2018 by the Advertising Club of Richmond. The group selected Mills for his leadership of Release The Hounds, an advertising agency he started in downtown Richmond. “We really try to put as much emphasis here on nonprofit and community-based projects as we do billable projects,” Mills said, noting their work with the RVA Street Art Festival and the SoundView Project, which has raised more than $20,000 to buy musical instruments for Richmond Public Schools. “It’s hard to find that balance. That was just something that I was very passionate about and committed to when I started the agency.”

Green, White and Brew If you asked Rob Short, “What is the one thing most people don’t know about you?” he might answer that he loves to brew beer. In fact, Short has been honing his beer making skills for a couple of years, and Richmond area alumni were invited to try his latest batch, Bomber Down Brown, at his home on June 14. Alumni enjoyed tacos from local favorite, Boka Taco, while Short explained the science and family history behind his delicious brew.

“My recipe for the Alum Brew Event was one my grandfather shared with me in my college years when I developed an interest in brewing my own beer. It was a general recipe he gave – East Kent Golding Hops, Fuggles Hops and crushed English Malt. I also took the time to use some of the minerals from the water of the area to help duplicate the taste and used a London Ale Yeast popular in English ales. Brewing beer or cooking a family recipe is a great way for me to connect to family members and fond memories.”

Entertainment was provided by alumni, Chip Shelton ’89, Chris Markunas ’01, Parker Daniels ’15, Matt Brassington ’16, Garrett Allen ’16, and Matthew Majikes ’17.

John Mills ’90, owner of marketing and advertising firm, Release the Hounds, collaborated with Short to create the brew’s original label. Mills along with Leesa Gregory ’93 and Rupa Murthy ’95 were alumni hosts of the event.

Amanda Prine Bryant ’04 writes: “In the summer of 2017, I opened a branch of the insurance agency that my father started in 1989, Greater Virginia Insurance Agency, LLC, that is based in Richmond. I am a licensed agent and the Kentucky agency manager and the company wide Chief Marketing Officer.

I sell insurance for pretty much everything and use the hashtag #weinsurethat quite a bit on our agencies’ Instagram posts! We specialize in home, auto, boat, commercial, farm, and event insurance (to name a few). When I’m not selling insurance I’m spending time with my husband, Eric, and our two wonderful children Lily (5) and Boone (19 months). I also enjoy showing my American Quarter Horse and playing golf.”

Class of 2007 Lauren van de Kamp Braithwaite ’07 writes, “I married Mark Braithwaite Jr. of Dinwiddie, VA. We met in 2013 at our CrossFit gym in Richmond! Mark is a graduate of Dinwiddie High School, has a bachelor of science from VCU, and a master’s in business from VCU. I graduated from Longwood University in 2011 with a bachelor of science, and graduated from VCU with my master’s in sport management! We got married on May 18, 2018 in Corolla, North Carolina...

We had 55 of our family and close friends staying in the event home for the whole week leading up to the wedding! Christie van de Kamp ’16 was my maid of honor.

Class of 2008 Mary Simpson Desch ’08 and Toby Desch were wed on May 5 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Goochland with the reception being held at the Country Club of Virginia Tuckahoe Creek Farmhouse. Mary writes, “We were lucky to have beautiful weather, great music, and several Titans in attendance!”

Mary is the director of graduate placement and support at Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School and Toby serves as the founder and executive director of UP RVA. Jordan Ferguson ’08 writes: “In the spring of 2014, I graduated with a bachelor of science degree in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. I attended graduate school at the University of South Carolina beginning in 2015 and just recently graduated in 2017 with a master’s degree in mass communication with a 4.0 GPA and induction into the Kappa Tau Alpha National Honors Society. Immediately upon graduation, I began working as an operational meteorologist for a small, private company (Weather Analytics) in Dover, New Hampshire. I’ve just reached my one year milestone with the company on May 8, 2018. Aside from all the serious business in life, I have been able to take up ice hockey in my spare time, playing with group on Tuesday nights and attending as many skills and drills practices as I can — and I cannot get enough of it.”

Christian Hansen ’08 visited Trinity in April to share his unique path with students during chapel. He reflected on the steps that he took that lead him to become the school chaplain at St. Michael’s School.

“Even though I did not become a music teacher as I originally thought,” he said, “I first chose youth ministry as it allowed me to utilize both of my passions: working with children and youth and music through playing guitar at church. In my current position, I have been able to not only teach, but coach cross country, basketball, and track, and play music in chapel and church services occasionally.”

Class of 2009 Corey Pegram ’09 writes: “I married Kathryn Norcross on March 10, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. My brother, Ross Pegram ’14, was my best man and my sister, Cassie Pegram ’12, was a bridesmaid. Alex Link ’09 was also a groomsmen. Scott Johnson ’09, Michael Mitchell ’09, and Christine Archuleta ’09 were also at the wedding. I’m lucky to have so many TES friends. Kathryn and I met at Wake Forest and dated long distance until moving to Phoenix, Arizona in summer of 2017 for our jobs where we still live now. Our honeymoon was spent in Iceland for a week!”

Trinity Alumni Gather in Dc Rob Short hit the road once again to visit with alumni that live in the Washington D.C. area in March. They gathered at Teddy and the Bully Bar where they enjoyed food, drinks and good company. “Excitement is the one word that describes going to see alums. Parking in DC was exciting too…but in a very different way” said Short. “To see alums, revisit amazing memories, and discover how alums make a difference in far away places is always wonderful and fills me with optimism about the future.” Rob Short, Marti Truman and Julia Bowling were joined by Bill Sanderson ’94, Keegan Hines ’05, Caitlin Tallent Hines ’06, Tim Hagood ’06, and Michael Gibbons ’10.

An essay by Laura Godwin ’10 was published in the most recent edition of the VAIS Vision eMagazine produced by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. In it, she reflected on the influential role that the arts played in her Trinity experience. “My advisor knew before I did that art would become a passion and allow me to find some purpose in high school. For the next four years, I spent long hours in the ceramics studio throwing pots, building boxes, and learning about the clean water crisis,” she wrote. “Art became my outlet, my solace. In the tiny ceramics studio with my 12 person ‘family,’ I was able to share the struggles of high school, learn how to accept and give constructive feedback, and be inspired by more than a textbook… Art was an essential part of my education.”

Margaret Dodson ’13 is currently the alumni relations coordinator at Randolph-Macon College. “What I do is help students turn thankful words and feelings into actions by giving back to our school,” she says. In April, Dodson spoke to the Trinity senior class about alumni engagement.

I earned my BIS in liberal studies of early and elementary education and my master’s of teaching with a concentration in early and elementary education. I will be joining Richmond Public Schools in the fall as a first grade teacher.”

Class of 2014 Emma Hern ’11 writes: “I released my debut EP, ‘Love Is Killing Me’ on May 1 with a music video and am happy to announce the release of my self titled EP on May 11! I’ve been living in Nashville for the past two years as a working musician after graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Elizabeth Bell ’14 graduated from the University of Virginia in May with a bachelor’s in mathematics and MT in secondary mathematics education. She is excited to be teaching math at Patrick Henry High School in Hanover this fall.

Camm Johnson ’14 and five other members of the US Military Academy parachuting team set the national skydiving record in February for completing a six-man formation in 9.16 seconds.

Class of 2015 Tappe Grotos ’15 finished her junior year at Lynchburg College in May. She is in the nursing program and also plays field hockey. She writes: “Junior year was definitely the most challenging so far in school, but also the most rewarding. I am having a blast at my clinical rotations and learning so many new things. I am excited to become a nurse, and I am very proud of all that I have accomplished thus far. The atmosphere at Lynchburg is very similar to Trinity. I love being able to go to class and cross paths with many familiar faces. I love the community. We do a lot as a school to promote unity and community. I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend two schools that are so welcoming.”

Liza Lewis ’15 writes: “I’m currently studying business with a concentration in management at Randolph-Macon and I really want to do marketing or advertising. I play the number one spot on the women’s golf team. I won my first collegiate tournament this past fall at the 2017 Revolutionary Collegiate Golf Classic at Patriots Glen in Elkton Maryland. As well as me winning individually, the team won and it was our first win with our new coach, Coach Haas. Playing a college sport has been one of the best decisions that I have made, it helps separate the stress of school with something fun and gives you your own little group of friends. There is never a dull moment on the golf team!”

Tray Pankey ’15 is a rising senior at Roanoke College. He received the Spitz Award given to the outstanding student in business analytics in the spring.

Discovering el camino Katie Cantone ’16 spent four months studying through UVA in Valencia, Spain with 100 other American students from eight different colleges and universities. A Spanish and media studies major, Cantone took a full class load of five Spanishonly classes while abroad and used the opportunity to speak Spanish all the time with her fellow students.

The full-immersion experience including staying with host families and adapting to Spanish customs and routines. “I was lucky enough to be placed in a family that treated me like one of their own; I attended celebrations with their extended family and participated in many of their day-to-day activities,” she said. “Some of my fondest memories are of sitting at the dinner table for hours talking with my host parents.”

Cantone traveled to Britain, France, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, and nine cities in Spain in those four months. She and four friends also participated in part of the Camino de Santiago, a famous Christian pilgrimage. “This was an absolutely incredible experience. It gave us an opportunity to unplug, reflect personally and spiritually, and meet pilgrims from all over the world,” she said. “We traveled an average of 22 kilometers per day, spending each night in public hostels that are just for Camino pilgrims.”

Her time in Spain has reinforced Cantone’s conviction that study abroad is one of the most valuable experiences a student can have. “Studying in Spain had been a dream of mine since my junior year at Trinity and definitely has formed an integral part of my personal and career paths,” she said.

Young Alumni induction ceremony A springtime Trinity tradition, the class of 2018 was informally inducted as Trinity alumni last April. The alumni office thanked seniors for all they have given to the Trinity community over the past four years and encouraged them to continue to leave their mark after they graduate.

The class enjoyed a welcome message from alumna Margaret Dodson ’13, currently the alumni relations coordinator at Randolph-Macon College. “What I do is help students turn thankful words and feelings into actions by giving back to our school,” said Dodson, noting that she has gratefully given to Trinity every year since her graduation.

Anthony Oates ’16 returned to the Virginia Rep stage this summer in West Side Story. Alumni relations associate Julia Bowling and assistant director of development Anne Hurt went to see him take the stage in August. “Anne and I had so much fun watching Tony perform and showcase all of his talent,” says Bowling. “The show was incredible!”

According to the program bio, Anthony is entering his second season as a company dancer with Richmond Ballet and has performed at The Joyce Theater in New York and the 2018 Ballet West National Choreographic Festival in Salt Lake City.

Class of 2016 Katie Cantone ’16 spent a semester studying in Valencia and hiking across Spain along the Camino de Santiago. A Spanish major at UVA, Cantone spent the summer of 2018 working with Spanish-speaking immigrants at the Virginia Poverty Law Center this summer. (Read more about her experience abroad on page 41.)

Elicia Wells ’16 was named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference First Team concluding the end of her first lacrosse season at Randolph-Macon College. She collected 168 saves, the second-highest total in the ODAC this season.

Charlotte Woods ’16 writes: “I am extremely proud of not only what I have accomplished this basketball season at Randolph-Macon, but what my team accomplished. At the beginning of the season we were faced with adversity. A few players left the team before the season started, leaving us with only eight players. We were fortunate to add two more players, making the team a total of 10 players... During

practice we pushed each other harder and held each other accountable.

Having such a small team allowed us to grow closer, allowing our chemistry on the court to improve. This led us to be ODAC Champions! This year brought back my love for the game. I learned to not get discouraged when things get tough, just keep pushing and putting in work to improve. I finished the season averaging a double-double. I earned many accolades this season, earning a Third-Team All-ODAC honor. Aside from basketball, I am studying to earn a double major in psychology and Spanish with a minor in sociology.”

Taylor White ’16 has continued her sports excellence for the William & Mary Tribe women’s gymnastics team, and was one of four gymnasts invited to compete in the NCAA regional meet as an all-arounder her sophomore year all while making the dean’s list with a 3.6 GPA.

Morgan White ’16 made dean’s list at Virginia Tech this past spring.

In Memoriam Robert C. “Bob” Goodman, Jr. FOUNDING HEADMASTER Robert C. “Bob” Goodman, Jr., Trinity’s founding headmaster, died on May 7, 2018, surrounded by his family. Goodman devoted his life to the education of young people and built a long, international career in independent education.

Echoing Griffen’s remarks at the same service was Tom Aycock, Trinity’s third headmaster. “Bob believed strongly that if you take the time to get to know someone –– to really get to know someone,” Aycock said, “it’s really hard to hate them.”

Goodman began teaching in Staunton, Virginia and met his wife, Jinny, while they were both teaching at Christchurch School. After opportunities led them to schools in Georgia, Tennessee and beyond, a commission from Trinity’s founding board of trustees in 1972 beckoned them home to Virginia.

Aycock praised Goodman’s stewardship of the young school.

“Whatever you’re building, the most difficult part is the foundation,” he said, “and Bob built a solid foundation for so much of what we have here today.” Recalling a story when Goodman scaled the roof of the gym in order to retrieve some “misplaced” plants, Aycock, said, “Bob was the type of school head, that when something had to be done, he just rolled up his sleeves and did it.”

Goodman would lead Trinity for its first 14 years, building the school’s enrollment to over 400 students within the first few years. His tenure oversaw the building of the academic campus, the Carpenter Gymnasium (1973-75) and the original Fine Arts Center (1985).

At the time of the school’s founding in the early ’70s, the city of Richmond was being pulled apart by issues surrounding the integration of public schools. Trinity’s founders were committed to the principal that “Trinity would be entirely open to members of all races and other religious bodies.”

“One of his greatest desires in life was unity; Bob loved to bring people together,” said Brian Griffen, Trinity chaplain, during Goodman’s memorial service at Trinity in early June. “...It didn’t matter what race you are, what creed you professed, or what socio-economic background you came from. When a student walked through the doors of this school, they were going to be cared for and educated…Black or white. Believer or non-believer. Boy or girl. Rich or poor. All are one as Titans.”

Rob Short, Trinity’s current head of school stated: “We will remember Bob for the many ways in which he helped students discover themselves and find wonder in the world. We remember how he welcomed students to Trinity from all over the Richmond area and from around the world, forging bonds that lasted for decades.”

Goodman is survived by his wife, Jinny, children Swannee (’75), Carey (’76) and Alice (’86) and grandchildren Will (’00) and Ellie (’05), and one great-grandchild.

For five decades — well beyond his tenure as headmaster — the Goodmans rarely missed an arts or athletic event at Trinity.

In the fall of 2017, Goodman was inducted into the Trinity Athletic Hall of Fame for showing fans what “once a Titan, always a Titan” really means.
