Last year saw the College initiate the final planned actions and programs as part of our College Strategic Plan: Ambition 2024 (2020–2024).

TRINITY COLLEGE STRATEGIC PLAN: TOWARDS 2030 (2025–2030) Highly operational and detailed in its structure and objectives, the Strategic Plan outlined those actions required to improve aspects of school culture, child-safeguarding protocols, policy compliance, school registration standards and governance practices. For the time, the detailed nature of the plan proved to be very important in bringing about effective and positive outcomes for the College community. I wish to acknowledge the work and support of so many in working together, in the Spirit of Community, to help achieve so much during this period of significant growth at Trinity College.

Throughout last year, the College embarked on an extensive process of developing a new Strategic Plan.

In formulating this new plan, the

College Leadership Team directed a thorough and inclusive process, consulting students, parents, College staff and members of the College Advisory Council over several months and across many meetings. Through these consultation meetings, all parties were challenged to acknowledge and celebrate our strengths as a College, to identify areas for growth and to consider opportunities for improvement in the future. Emerging strongly in all such feedback was a continual reference to the unique and much-valued TC Spirit. This sense of spirit permeates through our new plan.

The new College Strategic Plan was finalised late last year and in recent weeks received formal governance approval by Edmund Rice Education Australia Colleges Ltd.

It is with a great sense of optimism and purpose that I can now formally present our new College Strategic Plan: Towards 2030 (2025–2030).

Towards 2030

The new plan outlines our hopes and aspirations for the foreseeable few years. Importantly, it will guide the manner in which we plan for positive change, and then implement such change, all with the formation of our boys as central. This plan will set out the College’s strategic priorities and identify outcomes against which our future performance and school improvement will be measured.

Unlike our previous plan, this new Strategic Plan is deliberately less operational and detailed, but more aspirational and responsive to future opportunities that may emerge.

In building on our previous work, and in emphasising our purpose, our new College Strategic Plan begins with our Vision: To be the leader of boys’ education and in the formation of young Men for Others.

Our vision is enduring and declares our core purpose. It serves as the standard against which we consider our actions and our decisions.

As a Catholic College founded on the traditions of Blessed Edmund Rice, his example of solidarity with all people challenges us to live out a similar message of care and inclusion. In partnership with parents, we hold high expectations for the young men in our care and seek to provide them with a breadth of learning opportunities in a safe and caring environment, enabling academic growth, pride in their College and a commitment to serve others both now and in the future. Our Mission is: To offer innovative learning opportunities in a safe and nurturing environment which empowers young men to realise their potential.

As referred to earlier, a particular theme for our Strategic Plan was a very deliberate focus on our TC Spirit. With this in mind, our Five Spirit Ambitions remain.

They are the values by which we are all challenged to behave,

While strategic plans provide direction and suggest particular actions for achieving improvement, without the investment of time and energy and the commitment of the community to work together, such plans would be confined to paper only. The effectiveness of any strategic plan is in the coming together of people with a common purpose and shared view. Within our Trinity College context, this purpose and view will always be on the formation of our students into good young Men for Others.

As stated previously, we look forward to the future with optimism and purpose. Let the work continue as we strive to achieve our ambitions!

CLASS OF 2024 A FAREWELL GROUNDED IN FAITH, FRIENDSHIP AND LEGACY

On Thursday 17 October, the Trinity College community came together to farewell the Class of 2024 in a daylong celebration filled with tradition, reflection and heartfelt connection. The occasion marked the end of their school journey – but more significantly, the beginning of their lifelong connection to the College as Old Boys.

Soon after, the cohort gathered for their official graduation photo, in a defining image of unity, pride and legacy. It was here that the students donned their new TOBA hats for the first time, a visible sign of their lifelong connection to the College and its community.

Later that afternoon, families and staff reunited at St Mary’s Cathedral for the Graduation Mass. In the solemn beauty of the cathedral, the College gave thanks for the gifts and growth of the Class of 2024. Led by Fra Oscar Aguilera, the Mass included the presentation of symbolic gifts and a blessing over each student. Principal Mr Darren O’Neill reflected on the importance of faith, purpose and living a life of integrity.

“We trust that they leave our College with pride, with a real sense of self-worth and with a strong sense of faith. We are very proud of them all and offer each young man all of God’s blessings for the future.”

The day began at sunrise with the TOBA Graduation Breakfast, where students and their families were warmly welcomed by members of the Trinity-Terrace Old Boys’ Association. Despite the rain, the atmosphere was joyful, as guests gathered to honour the Year 12 cohort and welcome them into the TOBA community. This moment marked the students’ official transition from boys of the College to men of the wider Old Boys' network – a symbolic beginning to their next chapter.

Immediately following breakfast, the TOBA Graduation Assembly offered a deeper reflection on the significance of the day. Held in the Sports Centre, the assembly

featured a keynote address from Trinity Old Boy and Olympian Rhys Grant (’04). Speaking to the graduating class, Rhys reflected on his own experiences beyond the College gates and encouraged the young men to embrace challenges, maintain discipline and carry the Trinity values with them wherever they go.

The formal Graduation Assembly followed, offering a moment of reflection for the full College community. A highlight of the assembly was the final address by Head Prefect Jamie D’Agostino, who gifted each member of the Class of 2024 a flower – a symbol of the kindness, gratitude and

strength of relationships that have defined their time at Trinity.

“At Trinity, our formation into Men for Others encompasses much more than what we might think of as a stereotypical man,” Jamie said.

“May these flowers act as a constant reminder to you all of what you have learnt here at Trinity – to use your gifts and make the world a better place, and pass on these beliefs, one flower at a time.”

From here, the tone shifted into celebration with the Rumble – a vibrant and uniquely Trinity tradition that showcases the TC Spirit in full force. Students were met with cheers and high energy as they walked through a guard of honour

The evening concluded with the Graduation Dinner at Optus Stadium – a night of stories, laughter and celebration. As the city lights glittered in the background, students, staff and families shared a final meal, marking the end of one journey and the beginning of the next.

In his closing message to the Class of 2024, Mr O’Neill offered a lasting piece of advice: “While my obvious wish for you all is to do well, what I truly hope and pray is that you do good. It is in doing good for yourself, for your family and for others that you will be truly remembered.”

The Class of 2024 leaves Trinity College as young men of character, compassion and courage. They carry with them the memories of this day – a powerful farewell grounded in faith, friendship and legacy – and the promise of a future built on all they have become.

2024 Presentation Night A SHOWCASE OF EXCELLENCE, TRADITION AND THE TC SPIRIT

There are few nights in the Trinity College calendar that capture the heart of the community quite like Presentation Night.

Held at the Perth Concert Hall, the 2024 event brought together students, staff, families and special guests to celebrate the achievements of the year – not just in academic performance, but also in character, creativity, leadership and service.

The evening was filled with moments that reflected the essence of Trinity: musical performances that stirred the soul, the warmth of community pride and the recognition of students who consistently give their best in every area of College life. While awards were presented across Years 7–12 for excellence in academic studies, Christian Service, sport and the arts, what truly stood out was the spirit behind every achievement: the dedication, discipline and generosity that defines a Trinity education.

Presentation Night is as much about reflection as it is about recognition.

As students were honoured for their accomplishments, there was a strong sense of gratitude – for the support of families, the guidance of staff and the friendships that shape each student’s journey. A number of students were acknowledged for their consistent effort across many years, including those who received the prestigious Pinder Boor Medal, while others were celebrated for their courage to lead and serve without expectation of reward.

In a symbolic moment of tradition, the 2024 Prefect Body officially passed the mantle of leadership to the 2025 Prefects, handing over the Book of the Gospels, the College Candle and the Trinity Flag. It was a powerful reminder that leadership at Trinity is not about status, but about service, character and example.

2025 Head Prefect Louis Burnett and Deputy Head Prefect Christian Di Biase were welcomed with warm applause and a sense of pride in what lies ahead.

Principal Mr Darren O’Neill’s address reflected on the College’s five Spirit Ambitions – Faith, Excellence, Service, Community and Stewardship – and how these values are lived out every day through the actions of students and staff. As the College’s Strategic Plan: Ambition 2024 draws to a close and we welcome the new Strategic Plan: Towards 2030, the night also served as a celebration of growth and resilience, not only in programs and plans, but also in people.

There was a deep sense of gratitude woven through the night: gratitude for those who teach, those who lead and those who quietly go above and beyond behind the scenes. It was a celebration of our young men, for what they have achieved and for who they are becoming.

As the evening closed with the stirring sounds of the Trinity Pipes and Drums and the tradition of the lone piper playing Abide with Me, there was a quiet, collective sense of pride in the room. Pride not just

in awards or accolades, but also in the strength of a community that continues to nurture, guide and celebrate its young men.

Presentation Night 2024 was a powerful reflection of the TC Spirit; a celebration of talent, tradition and transformation. It reminded us that excellence is not only about achievement, but also about the heart, humility and purpose with which it is pursued.

Farewell to Year 6 A CELEBRATION OF GROWTH, GRATITUDE AND NEW BEGINNINGS

In the final week of the 2024 school year, Trinity College Junior School gathered to celebrate a significant milestone for our Year 6 cohort – their Graduation Mass and Morning Tea. Held in the College Chapel and Gibney Hall, the occasion was a fitting farewell that combined gratitude, reflection and community spirit.

On Friday 22 November, Gibney Hall was transformed into a formal theatre space as the Trinity College Junior School community gathered for the 2024 Junior School Presentation Night.

It was an evening filled with celebration, music and pride – a fitting conclusion to what has been a dynamic and successful year.

Students arrived with their families for a beautiful Graduation Mass in the College Chapel. The liturgy served as both a celebration and a moment of stillness, a chance to give thanks for the journey through Junior School and to pray for guidance as the students prepare to step into Secondary School. Each boy received his graduation certificate and class photo, marking this special point in time with a keepsake to treasure.

Following the Mass, families moved to Gibney Hall, which had been thoughtfully transformed into an elegant sit-down morning tea. The hall was beautifully decorated and set for celebration – a warm, joyful space that reflected the importance of the occasion. This memorable gathering was made possible thanks to the generosity and effort of our Year 5 parent volunteers, who coordinated the catering, set-up and clean-up to ensure a smooth and meaningful event for all. Their contribution to the Junior School community was both generous and greatly appreciated.

As our Year 6 students now continue their journey into the Secondary School, we congratulate them on everything they have achieved. We are incredibly proud of the young men they are becoming and look forward to seeing them thrive in the years ahead. We wish each of them the very best for the future and trust that their time in the Junior School has equipped them with the values, friendships and foundation they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

The Year 6 Graduation Mass and Morning Tea was not only a farewell, but also a celebration of growth and the strong community that supports every Trinity student along the way.

Parents, staff and special guests were treated to a variety of outstanding performances, with students showcasing their musical and creative talents through choral pieces, instrumental items and an energetic performance from the Boys in Groove (B.I.G.) dance group.

The program reflected not only the diversity of the Junior School’s co-curricular opportunities, but also the joy and confidence of the students involved.

The evening also provided the opportunity to formally recognise academic effort, character and

leadership through the presentation of the Christian Leadership Awards, Endeavour Awards and Year 6 Subject Awards. These honours acknowledged students who have displayed outstanding commitment, perseverance and service throughout the year.

A highlight of the night was the introduction of the 2025 Junior School Prefect Body. Twelve newly elected prefects were presented to the community, along with Deputy Head Prefect Gideon Quinn-Smith and Head Prefect Marcus Erceg.

We congratulate these young

leaders and look forward to their contribution to the life of the Junior School in the years ahead.

Their leadership will no doubt be grounded in service, kindness and a strong sense of responsibility.

Junior School Presentation Night was a wonderful reflection of the Spirit of Excellence that runs through every aspect of life at Trinity College. As 2024 came to a close, the event provided a joyful opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate the many achievements of our Junior School students.

THE HEAD OF THE RIVER 2025 It was a brave season for our boys and coaches.

Thank you to the College and the parents for providing this opportunity; a dress rehearsal for taking on life and getting the rewards you don’t achieve easily.

We were fortunate to have a reserves race, which is very respectful of all athletes and lets those who don’t make a crew have a fitting finish to the season. Our reserves would have made the top four crews at every other school.

Our Year 9s and Year 10s have been two exceptional groups and raced extremely well. They can be very proud of their work, their calmness and fierce attitude – they epitomise ‘humble ferocity’. To see a wave of boys in blue shirts run the last 500 metres, we can see the future, as our Year 8s turned up to support their older teammates.

The fight of the 4th VIII, 3rd VIII, 2nd VIII, and 1st VIII was exceptional, with their Year 8 coaches calling for more. When a young person 10

isn’t winning the race, it’s easy to ‘ejector seat’ them out of the heat and just finish the race on the fade.

All teams raced with their hand in the fire and beat crews, some with significantly stronger egos. We had great leadership from an exceptional group of coxswains who kept the attack going.

All the crews raced with bravery, resulting in the Hamer Cup for the fifth year in a row – the 17th win of the last 22, with no award for 2020.

From a distance, it looks like a big load for a student and families. It is, however, a very beautiful and thrilling thing to do; a combination of surfing and running – the faster the strides the greater the speed over the water. As the sun is coming up, it feels like flying.

At the time of writing we are in week nine and the season is over, yet the boys will shine for the rest of the year from the challenge they accepted. Regardless of the result, accepting the challenge and saying “bring it on” is a win and a template to call on for the future.

We congratulate all the other summer sports. I would ask all our boys to thank their parents for their support in making this possible.

Newsies A SHOW THAT MADE HEADLINES FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS

Trinity College’s 2025 production of Newsies was nothing short of extraordinary. A shining example of what happens when creativity, commitment and community come together.

Over three high-energy performances, our cast and crew transported audiences to the gritty streets of 1899 New York, telling the story of young newspaper sellers who dared to dream big and stand up for what was right.

Described as “a polished and joyful production that spilled off the stage,” Newsies was widely praised by audience members and critics alike. The atmosphere in the theatre was electric, with each show earning standing ovations and rave reviews.

From the opening number to the final bow, Newsies radiated energy, heart and a contagious sense of joy. The students’ passion and professionalism turned every scene into a showstopper, delivering moments that were powerful, humorous and deeply moving. More than just a musical, Newsies became a celebration of unity, resilience and youthful determination, and for our community it became a symbol of what can be achieved when we believe in each other.

Kimberly Shaw from Stage Whispers called it “vibrant” and “entertaining from beginning to end,” while Performing Arts adjudicator David Ballantyne was left awestruck, describing it as “a pleasure to be entertained” and applauding the performers with an enthusiastic “Bravo!”

Fellow adjudicator Paul McCarthy went so far as to say he was so captivated he “put his pen down” and allowed himself to be completely immersed in the show – a rare occurrence for someone used to taking notes midperformance. He commended

the “exceptional standard” set from the first notes and described the show as “an outstanding achievement” for all involved.

But perhaps what made Newsies so memorable wasn’t just the choreography, the vocals or the dramatic storytelling – it was the overwhelming sense of community and spirit that ran through every scene. Students from different year levels came together to form a tight-knit team, both on stage and behind the scenes. Staff, parents, Old Boys and friends of the College contributed in countless ways – from collecting newspapers for the set, to sewing costumes, managing sound and lighting, or simply cheering from the audience with proud smiles.

To everyone who supported the show – thank you. Your encouragement, generosity and belief in our students made a world of difference. Every kind word shared and every helping hand behind the scenes helped bring this production to life.

Newsies wasn’t just a performance; it was a movement. It reminded us of the power of storytelling, the importance of standing together and the magic that happens when young people are given the chance to shine.

As the final curtain fell and the applause echoed across Gibney Hall, one thing was certain: this production will be remembered for years to come; not just for its talent, but also for the heart and spirit behind it.

A Celebration of Faith, Service and Solidarity On Tuesday 13 May, the Trinity College community came together to celebrate Blessed Edmund Rice Day – a significant occasion in the life of the College that reflects our heritage as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition.

The day began with a reverent Eucharistic celebration in Gibney Hall, where students and staff gathered in prayer and reflection.

The Mass served as a powerful reminder of Blessed Edmund’s mission – a man of deep faith who dedicated his life to the education and care of those most in need.

His values continue to shape the College’s culture and provide a foundation for how we live out the call to be Men for Others.

Following the Mass, students heard from a range of local service organisations, each sharing their work and encouraging our young men to consider how they, too, can contribute to a more just and compassionate world. These presentations offered a contemporary lens through which to view Edmund’s legacy, not as a figure of the past, but as a role model whose values remain vital today.

After recess, students and staff laced up their sneakers for the annual Fun Run for India. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Swan River and surrounding bridges, the course symbolised more than just fitness or fun – it was a tangible act of solidarity. Funds raised from the run support vital projects led by the Christian Brothers in India, including: • MITHRA, Chennai: a home and school for children with disability who are often marginalised due to poverty and social stigma • Jagruti High School, Mandal: a school supporting children from the Gamit tribal community, one of India’s most disadvantaged groups • Jim McGinnis’s work in Kolkata: providing food, clothing and compassion to the poorest of the poor living on railway platforms

• Christian Brothers initiatives in Kolkata: delivering education and outreach programs to families experiencing extreme hardship.

Students were reminded that through small actions, great change is possible. Each step they took contributed to a collective effort that will improve lives, offer dignity and bring hope to communities across the globe.

The day’s momentum continued with an afternoon of stalls, food, music and activities in Centenary Park. The College came alive with colour and energy, thanks to the collaborative efforts of students, staff and families.

The fair was a celebration of joy and community spirit, all while continuing to raise funds and awareness.

A highlight of the afternoon was the highly anticipated Staff versus Students Dodgeball Game – a lighthearted showdown filled with

laughter, friendly competition and great skill on both sides. It was a fitting way to close a day grounded in values and uplifted by fun and fellowship.

As Principal Mr Darren O’Neill shared in his address: "As a community we must continue to instil in our boys the ability to see injustice, the courage to challenge this appropriately and the wisdom to do things differently and positively for their future. This is what a ‘liberating education’ seeks to do."

Edmund Rice Day is a reflection of who we are as a College. It calls us to be people of faith and action. It challenges our young men to see beyond themselves. And it reminds us that the TC Spirit is strongest when we stand together, live our values and walk humbly in service of others.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Celebrating Mother's Day At Trinity College, we recognise the invaluable role that mothers and maternal figures play in the lives of our students. Their support, often given quietly and consistently behind the scenes, is essential to the growth and wellbeing of our boys. In honour of this important relationship, our Junior School community gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day with a meaningful morning of reflection, gratitude and connection.

The celebration began with a reverent Mass in the College Chapel, bringing together students, staff and families in prayer. The liturgy was filled with warmth and student involvement, creating a memorable and reverent start to the day.

Their words offered a powerful insight into the Trinity experience from a parent’s perspective and were deeply appreciated by all who attended.

Following the Mass, families were welcomed to a morning tea hosted

by Junior School fathers, in a wonderful expression of community spirit and hospitality. The event served as an opportunity for connection and celebration, with families enjoying the chance to gather, share stories and strengthen the bonds that support each student’s journey.

In her reflection, Mrs Jacqueline Quinn-Smith spoke of the partnership between home and school:

"I have truly appreciated the nurturing, the educating and the moulding of my boys into Men for Others that the wonderful staff here accomplish. Clear expectations of my role as a parent and their role as educators have helped this relationship thrive. I feel we have shared a great partnership, and I thank you for this."She also

acknowledged the strength of the parent community at the College: "We are sharing a unique and finite time in our lives – these beautiful boys grow so quickly, their time here in Junior School is short ... Cheering, supporting and encouraging each other’s children has been memorable for me. This is where we begin forging lifelong friendships."

The morning was a beautiful reminder of the strong, shared journey that exists between Trinity families and staff. It celebrated the spirit of care and gratitude that runs through the Junior School and reflected the deep connections that make our College community so special.

I am happy to say that 2024 finished strongly for TOBA, with a full schedule of events. There were some excellent highlights and a continuation of record attendances at popular events.

We welcomed 184 new Old Boys into the TOBA family at the 2024 Graduation Breakfast. We were thrilled to welcome 2016 Olympian and Australian rowing champion Rhys Grant (‘04) as our guest speaker.

TOBA has enjoyed a very busy first half of 2025, and I’d like to share some of the highlights with the TC community.

We saw some fierce competition at the Summer Sports Day, with TOBA winning tennis, water polo, cricket and basketball and TC winning rowing and volleyball. Thank you to everyone who arranged teams, umpired, cooked a snagger or just came along to have a laugh.

Club, at Yokine, in March, with a full field of Old Boys of varying age and ability taking up the clubs for a day of good banter and, occasionally, good golf. Congratulations to the winning team: Bernard Hogan, Simon Ness, Paul Ness and Phil Kavenagh, with a score of 53.125.

Our AGM was held in March, and I am proud to announce the incoming committee as follows: President Dion Smith (’87) Vice-president Terry Jones (’70) Vice-president Rob Jurjevich (’90)

Our Golden Heritage Club members – those ‘boys’ who graduated from the College 50 or more years ago – continue to build in numbers and have become a special cohort of our TOBA Alumni. More than 50 enthusiastic Golden Heritage Club members, ranging from the Class of 1948 to the Class of 1975, joined the Year 12s for the first Mass of the year in the TC Chapel. It’s always a pleasure to be reminded of how our Catholic faith unites the TC boys across decades of separation.

number of 450+ Trinity and CBC boys enjoyed the River Room overlooking the College at Optus Stadium. The crowd enjoyed listening to the guest speaker, cricketer Mitchell Johnson, and the four new inductees into the Sporting Hall of Fame: Kevin Carton (’51), Herb Elliott (’54), Michael Brennan (’82) and Jeremy McClure (’04).

Special mention goes to the Class of 1983, who won the Come with Strength and Vigour trophy for the third year in a row for the highest attendance from a year group, with 26 of the year group in attendance. The lunch is our major fundraising event for the year and the generosity of attendees was as heartwarming as always.

Our Trinity Sunday Mass, co-hosted

by Trinity College and TOBA, was a wonderful community Mass, with the homily celebrated by Fra Oscar Aguilera. It was pleasing to see Old Boys, College staff and families come together in a well-attended celebration.

It looks like the latter part of the year will also be exciting and busy.

GRADUATION BREAKFAST The Trinity-Terrace Old Boys’ Association (TOBA) welcomed the Class of 2024 into its community on the morning of Thursday 17 October.

The day commenced with an informal breakfast held at Centenary Park, where Year 12 students, their families and loved ones gathered to celebrate this significant milestone.

Following breakfast, formalities took place in the Sports Centre. TOBA President Dion Smith (’87) officially welcomed the Class of 2024 to the TOBA community and, as is tradition, asked graduating students to stand and face their parents before he said these words on their behalf: "Mum and Dad, thank you for every parent involvement of my schooling journey; every early-morning drop off/late-night pickup; getting me out of bed; making recess and lunches that sometimes didn’t get eaten; constantly paying for and replacing lost uniforms and sporting items; helping with homework until Year 10, when the content got a little too hard for you; watching me at weekend sport; your financial sacrifices for school fees and various interstate and overseas trips; and for your unconditional love and support."

Graduating students and all in attendance applauded these very special parents.

Dion spoke about how the students now join more than 14,500 other Old Boys who have worn the same uniform, competed against the same sporting rivals, sung the same war cries and had hundreds of other shared experiences. It is our hope to see them remain involved and connected to this incredible community and the many ways to achieve this.

Dion then welcomed the guest speaker: “We are very fortunate in an Olympic year to secure 2016 Olympian and Australian rowing champion Rhys Grant from the Class of 2004,” before Director of Rowing Phil Jurjevich (’85) provided a brief background on Rhys: "Rhys is the epitome of a Trinity Man and displays the Trinity Spirit.

He was a leader, a Prefect, a piper, a runner, a hockey player. He stroked the winning 1st and was the National Champion. Rowing Australia kept making him race in places below where his achievements would place him, but he never gave up; he was indefatigable. When given the Australian Scull to qualify for the Rio Olympics, even though his ranking

put him in the double which had already qualified him, he said, ‘bring it on’ and raced his way to Rio, making the A final. He won the President’s Cup twice to be the best sculler in Australia and in the lead for the first time, but the commentator didn't even mention him until after halfway, as he wasn’t from Victoria or New South Wales. He showed them."

"Training for Spain and the World Championships in Year 12, Rhys was overloaded. WAIS said six sessions a week, which turned into 12, along with the Olympic squad. In coming up with a plan, I said to Rhys that for the rest of his life he will remember being the best horse Australia had, and that we sent him overseas to beat the US, German, English and everyone else’s best horses, and for the rest of his life he will have that memory of being our best. ‘Whatever you do after this you can remember this bright moment.’ But he didn’t stop there: he went on to great success and being our country’s best sculler.

"Rhys came back from the Olympics and went on to be an engineer and invent a buggy that would drive through pipes filming for cracks, and

CLASS OF 2024 – SAVE THE DATE now a drone that does that job. He also designed lots of the Bunbury bypass, which we can all thank him for when we fly by instead of going into Bunbury. All the while he has been and still is a great bloke, who looks after the Class of 2004, family and friends and all he encounters."

Rhys then addressed graduating students and their families with some wonderful memories, insights and messages. He spoke to boys about building resilience in your journey through school and life.

On Friday 14 November 2025 we invite the Class of 2024 to meet at The Shoe Bar, in Yagan Square (owned by Paul Higgins, Class of 1982). This will be your first anniversary reunion, so look for the TOBA flag at the bar. The first round will be on TOBA!

A huge thank you goes to the Trinity College Auxiliary for providing a wonderful breakfast for families.

Thank you also to everyone who assisted on the day, including the maintenance and grounds team and TOBA Executive Committee members for cooking up a storm.

A special mention goes to Mr Clint Testa for his outstanding contribution, commitment and dedication and care of the graduating Class of 2024 and their journey.

TOBA WINS THE STEVE LEAHY (’78) CUP The TOBA Summer Sports Day is always a great day for our community. This year there was a fantastic turnout of both Old Boys and students. There was some strong competition, as Old Boy teams challenged current students in basketball, cricket, rowing, tennis, volleyball and water polo in the quest to win the Steve Leahy (’78) Cup.

TOBA was triumphant, winning basketball, cricket, tennis and water polo, while TC won rowing and volleyball.

We’re very grateful for the support received to make this event happen, so a huge thanks goes to everyone involved, especially: • TC Director of Sport, Mr Ryan Lockyer, and all captains, coaches, managers, umpires, referees and players of both TOBA and TC teams • First Aid Officers from St John Ambulance • TOBA Executive Committee • TC grounds and maintenance staff for maintaining impeccable grounds.

RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE

97 CLUB AND CROWNS AWARDS ASSEMBLY

On Tuesday 4 February, the Trinity College community gathered in the Sports Centre for the 97 Club, Academic and Crowns Awards Assembly. This special event formally recognised the academic achievements of students across the Secondary School and honoured the outstanding WACE results of the Class of 2024.

The Assembly opened with prayer, music and reflection, including the symbolic lighting of the Torch of Learning by 2024 College Dux Matthew Ryan. In his address to the student body, Matthew encouraged all students to reflect on their personal goals and apply themselves wholeheartedly: “Find what you are passionate about and commit yourself wholeheartedly to achieving your best, as the levels you reach will be known by you – put in the hard work and you will be rewarded.”

Principal Mr Darren O’Neill also addressed the College, recognising the collective effort behind student achievement and the leadership shown by those who consistently strive for excellence: 24

YEAR 13 BREAKFAST

Mr O’Neill challenged all students to embrace the new academic year with focus and purpose: “Every student is capable of this.”

The morning was not only a celebration of achievement, but also a reminder that every Trinity student is called to strive for their personal best – in the classroom, on the field, in the arts, through Christian Service and in every area of College life. As Mr O’Neill concluded:

On Thursday 13 February, the College proudly hosted its annual Year 13 Breakfast in Gibney Hall, the first official gathering of the Class of 2024 since their graduation. While the uniforms may have been swapped for uni hoodies, high-vis and casual wear, the strong sense of belonging was unchanged.

Eleven recent graduates were inducted into the prestigious 97 Club, celebrating their outstanding results in the WACE examinations.

These Old Boys represent the highest standard of academic performance and have set a benchmark for excellence at the College.

The assembly also recognised students who received Academic Full Colours, Half Colours and Certificates of Excellence, as well as more than 200 students who earned

“I wish every student success in applying yourself to the best of your ability throughout this year.”

This event served as both a celebration and a challenge – to make the most of the opportunities available and to pursue excellence with integrity, discipline and heart.

The morning offered a relaxed, ‘mix and mingle’-style opportunity for staff and former students to reconnect over coffee and breakfast.

Teachers and mentors enjoyed hearing what the newest Trinity Old Boys have been up to, whether it was starting university, entering

trades, beginning work or taking time to explore their next steps.

At Trinity, we pride ourselves on the lifelong connection we hold with our graduates. The Year 13 Breakfast is an important reminder that while their time as students may be over, the gates of Trinity remain open to them,

always. It was a morning of familiar faces, shared stories and a few laughs; a celebration of friendship, reflection and the strong foundations built during the boys’ time at the College.

To the Class of 2024: no matter where life takes you, you’ll always have a home here at Trinity.

JOHN VAN BEEK ON AUSTRALIAN IDOL

GOLDEN HERITAGE

John Van Beek’s journey from the classrooms of Trinity College (Class of ’23) to the national spotlight of Australian Idol ’s Top 8 is a powerful story of talent, determination and quiet resilience. From early performances in school assemblies in Year 5 to commanding a national stage, John has proven that authentic artistry can still capture hearts in an industry driven by competition.

Growing up in Perth, John was immersed in music from a young age. Trinity College played a formative role in his development, offering him a platform to explore his vocal talents and stage presence.

Whether it was leading roles in school productions, heartfelt solo performances or involvement in the school’s music ensembles, John was a standout – not just because of his voice, but also because of the sincerity he brought to every note.

After graduating, John took a leap of faith and auditioned for Australian Idol, one of the country’s most iconic singing competitions.

His audition immediately captured the attention of the judges, who praised his emotive delivery and musicality. From that moment on, John became one to watch.

Throughout the competition, he built a reputation for delivering performances that felt personal and raw. He moved seamlessly across genres – from strippedback acoustic ballads to bold pop anthems – earning praise from the judges and growing a devoted fan base across the nation.

Viewers were drawn not just to his voice, but also to his grounded nature and honest storytelling.

Reaching the Top 8 is no small feat, especially in a field of such fierce talent. But for John, the journey has only just begun. He leaves Australian Idol with a robust foundation: thousands of devoted fans, a portfolio of standout performances and endorsements (both implicit and explicit) from some of the industry’s best. These achievements mark more than the

This is a very special day on the TOBA calendar, and as the Class of 1975 celebrates 50 years since leaving school, we were delighted to welcome them to the group.

Cohorts spanned the Class of 1948 to the Class of 1975, and we were thrilled to give new members a unique tie and pin designed especially for the Golden Heritage Club and blessed by Fra Oscar Aguilera.

He spoke of his time on television reality program SAS Australia and his work in Western Australia surrounding mental health and his efforts to normalise men talking about it without embarrassment.

PSA GOLF DAY A great day was enjoyed by a full field of players (140) at the Cottesloe Golf Club for the 2024 PSA Old Boys’ Golf Day.

The course was in peak condition and the weather was good for the fairways, albeit the sea breeze made some holes challenging. The Scotch boys jumped out from the start, with Wesley close behind, but local knowledge got the Scotch team home to win the shield for 2024.

CLASS OF 1964 60TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION

CBC LUNCHEONS A very special group of CBC Terrace Old Boys gather together twice a year to celebrate their shared love of CBC/Trinity and their lifelong friendships.

The proceedings commenced with John O’Connell (’49) welcoming the group. In September a beautiful letter received from Mrs Ronnie Hogan, who lost her husband, Kevin, nine months previously and was unable to join the group, was read aloud to the gathering. Below is a passage from Ronnie’s letter: 30

The College staffroom was the venue for the Class of ’64 to gather and share tales of the school they variously attended between 1956 and 1964 and the paths taken over the ensuing 60 years.

Thirty-two responded to the enthusiastic urgings of Peter Manucci to come together, support each other and reminisce about the events that were our schoolboy days.

“A wonderful group of friends, colleagues and fellow Christian gentlemen. May they continue to meet and greet enjoying each other’s company at every opportunity.”

Brother Basil Hickey (’52) said grace, thanking God for looking after the group for all these years.

The camaraderie and love among this group is obvious.

May its members enjoy many more luncheons together.

Once again, we thank the very attentive Kailis Leederville staff for looking after us and always making us feel so welcome.

David Pollard was the sole interstate attendee, but many others had recorded their disappointment at not being able to attend. We were pleased ex-federal and state MP Graham Edwards was able to attend and the often provocative Brett Christian OAM was there to provide behind-the-scenes aspects of many of the stories the Subiaco Post had led over the years. The evening was also an opportunity for many to learn of and congratulate Bob Shields on

his induction into the TOBA Sporting Hall of Fame earlier in the year.

Di Millar, who played her usual sterling role in organising the evening, was there to welcome us and share a drink or two in what was to be her last TOBA function before heading off on long service leave. We were pleased you could share the function with us, Di, after many years of service to TOBA and the College community.

As was the case when the Class of ’64 gathered in 2014, there was an abundance of shared tales as we recalled the exploits and characters of our Terrace and Trinity days, the teachers who impacted and shaped us and the events we collectively shared.

Over the years, the many and varied shades of hair colours have been replaced with shades of grey and body shapes have changed, with some having appeared to have shrunk with the passage of time.

Some of the once tall are now seemingly diminished in stature.

The common element woven through our current appearance is that we are no longer capable of

20 October 2024 – exactly 50 years since the Leaving Class of 1974 finished school, and what better reason than to gather for afternoon tea! More than 30 students and four staff assembled at the Norfolk Tavern downstairs in Frankie's Bar. A great afternoon (and into the evening) was had by all. The typical old-school stories came out, with different versions of the same one – including the old chestnut as to why there was no Head Boy or Prefects in 1974, and who it should have been! We welcomed four ‘new attendees’ that we had not seen over the past reunions and toasted absent friends and classmates not going so

well. We acknowledged those who travelled long distances to make it.

The general consensus was to not wait 10 years for our next war cry.

On Friday 1 November 2024, the Trinity College Class of 1984 met up at The Shoe Bar and Bistro at Yagan Square to celebrate 40 years since graduating from school.

Ironically, or well planned, the date of the reunion just happened to be the same date as the Year 12 Staff–Student Dinner, which was held at The Savoy Hotel on 1 November 1984, 40 years to the date.

What an unforgettable night! Our 40th reunion was a true celebration of friendship, nostalgia and the many milestones we’ve all achieved since our school days. Around 35 classmates came to meet up again, five years after the last anniversary.

There were some regular faces; however, there were some new faces too who had missed other reunions.

The Dux of Year 12 in 1984, Ellis Scartaccini, attended for the first time and so too did Mr Trevor Lynch – former teacher at Trinity College back in the day. Whether they travelled

from near or far, it was amazing to reconnect, share stories and relive some of the best moments from our time together at Trinity College.

From the heartwarming conversations to the laughter that echoed through the evening, it was clear that the bonds we formed all those years ago are still as strong as ever. We hope everyone left with a full heart, new memories and a renewed sense of pride in the incredible journey we’ve all had since graduation.

Trinity has changed considerably since our school days in the 1980s compared to what the college has to offer now to students. It is truly a world-class school.

Thanks to Michael Madigan from our year group and Slim Jim Enterprises – Jamie Mercanti ('80) – for organising

the entertainment. Denise Demachi (sister of Suzie Demachi from the Baby Animals) performed live for a few hours on the night. She had a fantastic voice and was great entertainment. Unfortunately, Michael Madigan could not make it and Phil Hinton was away due to work commitments at the last minute.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and Phil Hinton who helped organise and make this event possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

As we look ahead, let’s continue to stay in touch, support one another and keep the spirit of Trinity College alive. Here's to the next reunion – may it be just as special as this one!

It was a stinking hot autumn day on 29 March when 50-plus Old Boys from the Class of 1985 came together to celebrate their 40-year anniversary reunion. The Shoe bar in the city was the perfect destination for the celebration and Old Boys came from far and wide to attend this special event. One of the highlights of the night was watching a PowerPoint presentation of photos dating back to when they first started at Trinity College in primary school through to photos from all previous reunions from their extensive library of archived photos. There was also historical video footage of their last day at school, with vision of the school in 1985, interviews with teachers and the headmaster at the time, Br Bryant. Precious memories

For all, it was the realisation that the spirit engendered during our time at Trinity has never vanished. It may have sat in the background over the years, but it remained intact.

The atmosphere was a mix of familiarity and surprise. All of us look different, but all of us share a common history and it was only moments before that shared history shone through in conversation and camaraderie. The years have changed many of us – time changes everyone – but we were all reminded that the bonds formed at Trinity, no matter how distant, still hold significant meaning.

There were plenty of laughs shared among the significantly large group reminiscing on those fabled memories in the classroom and beyond. Not only was it an opportunity to reflect on our time together and the unique bond we all have as TC brothers, but also to get to know what each of us are up to in our first significant reunion of length post-school.

CLASS OF 2004 – 20TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION The 2004 cohort reunion was a night of nostalgia, laughter and a little bit of: "Wow, where did the time go?"

IAN LILLICO CLASS OF '69 – OBITUARY Our friend Ian Lillico (’69) has passed away.

Dux of Trinity in 1969, Ian stepped out into the world with a wealth of opportunity for success, personal fulfilment and high accomplishment.

He found his vocation as an educator. Some might have thought it a curious choice for Ian, who had enormous promise in so many fields. Despite that, Ian knew himself rightly as his career over the subsequent decades shows.

CLASS OF 2014 – 10TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION

The 10-year reunion for the Class of 2014 was held at the Camfield on 12 October. Thank you to the 46 boys who attended, with some coming from all parts across the country. It

was a great night catching up with old friends and reminiscing on some old stories.

Frank James

He qualified with a BSc and Diploma in Education from The University of Western Australia in 1973 and, later, a PhD. He worked at 11 schools around WA as a teacher, head of department, deputy principal and principal.

He became renowned in Australia and internationally for his specialism in boys' education and his research of gender issues in education. He received the prestigious Churchill Fellowship in 1999 to further his expertise.

Ian founded the Boys Forward Institute, providing professional development for teachers, parents, students and other organisations throughout Australia and around the world.

He was a National Fellow and Life Member of The Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) and was the ACEL 2006 National Travelling Scholar.

He served on the academic staff of Edith Cowan University supervising trainee teachers.

15 November marked a special occasion for the members of the Class of 2023. It was a chance to get together for their first-year reunion and reminisce a year on from graduation.

There was a great turnout, with more than 70 Old Boys in attendance.

Special thanks to Paul Higgins (’82) and all the staff at The Shoe Bar for their hospitality on the night.

Ian showed an innate sense of the importance of wellbeing in school, relationships with classmates, parents and teachers, the subjects and how they are taught, and the practical effect of them on life.

His early life gives a clue to the passion he showed for the type of education that leads to happier, kinder people, and that everyone should experience it.

Ian began school with the Sisters of Mercy at his local convent in 1958.

In the 1950s and 60s it was custom for the Sisters to teach boys for the first few years and then move them on to the Christian Brothers.

Following that custom, the cohort of 1958 arrived at Saint Francis Xavier’s in East Victoria Park in 1962.

Of that number, some would go on to finish school but, for others, the object was to get enough of an education to move on to a job, and quite a few boys left at age 15.

That, of course, is consistent with the Christian Brothers’ purpose at the time because the religious community was there to teach those without advantage.

In 1968 Ian left Saint Francis’s for Trinity, where he was to shine. A modern school with a huge population, and subjects and activities for every taste.

It is clear from Ian’s success in his short time at Trinity College that he thrived there. And he thrived throughout life, becoming a strong, vital and transformative citizen.

He lightened everything with a warm and friendly personality.

He enjoyed making jokes and when he heard something that appealed to him, laughter would come.
