LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Raising Good Young Men At our most recent College Presentation Night, I took the opportunity to speak positively, honestly, optimistically and somewhat defiantly about boys – their education and their character formation.

I began by questioning and criticising the various media reports and mixed political views that inevitably arrive at giving some commentary regarding single-gender schooling.

These opinion pieces, rather than any research-based evidence, often seek to list the perceived advantages and disadvantages of single-gender schools. Invariably, and in my opinion rather lazily, such articles always seem to circle back to an unwelcome and unhealthy focus on ‘all-boys’ schools’, highlighting matters related to respect campaigns, consent education and perceptions about toxic masculine cultures that are allegedly attached to certain sporting clubs, military organisations, corporate structures, the corridors of politics and, rather sadly, boys’ schools.

I find the narrow view of many such media reports and their eagerness to apportion blame for all manner of societal issues as particularly poor

and unhelpful. The responsibility and indeed privilege of forming in our young people an awareness and deep respect for themselves and for others, of developing respectful relationships and of understanding and appreciating developmentally appropriate aspects of consent and respect falls to everyone within our society.

By their very nature, schools have a particular responsibility in this regard; however, they do not claim exclusive rights in the character formation of children into young adults.

Primarily it is families, complemented by schools and their various programs, and indeed our wider society, that seeks to instil values and healthy attitudes in our children and young adults. The congruence and consistency of our message and the example we set regarding these values looks to reinforce them as acceptable and expected behaviours.

The re-emergence of these issues in the media from time to time should not signal a continuation of finger-pointing, but rather, challenge us all to reflect on whether we could do more to educate, demonstrate

and encourage our boys (and girls) about values and respect.

As critical adults, I feel it is vitally important that we should be more overt and unequivocal about what is acceptable and what isn’t. We should find opportunities to reinforce this regularly and as developmentally appropriate. This is a shared journey that we take with our boys at Trinity College. We should unite – families, school and our wider society, to positively raise and form our young men to be kind, caring, resilient and respectful – to be Men for Others.

At Trinity College, within the context of specific and targeted curriculum that is presented in Religious Education, Health Education and through a variety of targeted Pastoral and Formation programs, aspects of respectful relationships, protective behaviours and consent are examined and taught regularly. Such lessons are further complemented by guest speakers and a deliberate focus on particular themes. One such example is the Father and Son Walk enjoyed by our Year 9 boys and their fathers (father-figures) as part

of their Becoming Men Program.

This program seeks to challenge boys to sincerely examine what it is to be a ‘good man’ and in doing so, focuses on such things as right relationships, respect and our attitudes, behaviours and language with respect to women.

Every year, we host our International Women’s Day Breakfast and encourage boys from all year groups to join with their mothers, grandmothers and sisters for this special event. International Women’s Day is a celebration of respect, love and care towards women. It is wonderful that this special day holds an important place in our own College and the wider community.

I am particularly proud that it forms an essential part of the curriculum and formation programs within our school, and that teaching and talking about respectful relationships and the empowerment of women is part of the holistic education of our boys.

In recent years, across all cohorts from Years 4–12, the College has introduced elements of The Resilience Project. This wonderful program promotes students to engage in three key pillars proven to cultivate positive emotion, build resilience and promote respect – Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). This, too, challenges the boys to examine all aspects of selfrespect and respect for others.

actions about and towards any person, for any bias, or for any reason. As a College we challenge our staff and our parents to choose the right time and the right context to have mature and meaningful conversations with our boys about respectful relationships. I appreciate that such a conversation needs to be carefully considered and may be somewhat awkward and even a little difficult. However, our young men deserve such conversations; our young women will appreciate them; and our society certainly needs them.

As I consistently highlight, it is vital that the home and the school enjoy a positive and meaningful partnership that is centred on the care, interests and character formation of each student. We should be reminded that being Christian asks us to follow the ways of Christ and to challenge those things that we know are inherently wrong. If that remains our focus and authentically guides our actions, we can be confident in developing a culture that nurtures the healthy formation of our young men. They are the future, and we must always seek ways to encourage them to make such a future positive for everyone.

Of course, as a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition, important Christian values about respecting the ‘dignity of others’ underpins the focus on acceptable behaviours and attitudes. The formal manner in which we follow the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum across all year levels certainly adds to this.

Mindful of age appropriateness and developmental maturity, we regularly discuss important issues despite the difficulty of the content – the underlying message being that respect for others and all aspects of consent are not negotiable.

I present these school examples, not as evidence of any type of solution to such complex social issues, but to illustrate our ongoing commitment to assist in the formation of good young men. As a College seeking continual improvement and open to reviewing our practices, programs

Vale Brother John Carrigg

Brother John Carrigg, second Headmaster of Trinity College 1966–1971, was a scholar of the English language and an inspirational educator who believed in lifelong learning and that education was for building character as well as attaining knowledge. He is remembered as a humble, inspiring and visionary man. He viewed teaching as a vocation – his vocation – and he was thankful for the opportunity that teaching gave him.

Brother Carrigg spoke of seeing “quite a modern structure – but with not a blade of grass anywhere, just all white sand”. At that time, the fledgling school had a young group of Brothers, and with Brother Carrigg at the helm they started to plant grass and grow trees. “We planted trees, planted them everywhere for 10 years,” and “there was a real sense of ‘we’re going to make a go of this, and the boys had that feeling – that spirit – too,” he said.

Today, Trinity is surrounded by these magnificent trees which are Brother Carrigg’s legacy to us, and which became a hallmark of his that traces his movement through all the places where he taught and lived.

John Carrigg was born in Mt Lawley, the second of five children. He often spoke of his happy childhood, especially the years following his father’s return from World War II. He also spoke of how his parents’ lives had been dominated by the two World Wars and the Great Depression and the impact they had on them and society.

From a young age, John was strongly committed to Christianity and the church. At the age of 16, he moved to Melbourne to finish his last year of high school with the Christian Brothers order at the Brothers’ Juniorate school and then began his teacher training at Mount St Mary’s in Sydney. A year later, he started teaching at a small parish school in St Kilda, Melbourne, where he taught migrant children “just off the boats”.

He then moved to St Kevin’s College, Melbourne, for the next three years.

It was during this time that he confirmed his commitment to his 4

faith and the church when, on 28 December 1950, he made his first vows to the order of Christian Brothers – a commitment to last a lifetime.

While teaching at St Kevin’s, Brother Carrigg attended university in the evening, where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English, History and Latin. He then completed a Diploma, a Bachelor and a Master of Education, and later a PhD in adult education from the University of New England, in New South Wales.

In 1958, he returned to Perth to teach at Christian Brothers’ College (CBC), the Terrace, where his own father had been a student some 50 years prior. This was the start of a 14-year teaching association with the College – four years at CBC and 10 years at Trinity College.

In 1966, at the age of 34, Brother Carrigg was appointed Headmaster of Trinity College. He is remembered as a dynamic leader who worked tirelessly to improve the educational facilities and the grounds at Trinity and the Waterford Playing Fields. In 1968, with the Waterford facilities established, he concluded the negotiations which led to Trinity joining the Public Schools’ Association (PSA) of Western Australia (WA).

Brother Carrigg encouraged his students to participate in all areas of school life and to achieve the highest quality of academic excellence of which they were capable. In 1969, he demonstrated this by installing the Trinity College Academic Honour Boards in Gibney Hall.

In 1970, the biggest single contribution to the College under Brother Carrigg’s direction was the building of the Brother J A Kelly Senior School. In 1971, his final year as Headmaster, a dream he held for the College was realised, with the

placement of the striking circular spire on the Chapel. This was made possible through the generosity of his parents, John and Dorothy, who knew their son’s wish was to see the completion of the spiritual heart of Trinity College. This continued his family’s long commitment to the College, which began in 1906.

Following his time at Trinity, Brother Carrigg took on leadership positions at other colleges. In 1974, his expertise and diplomacy were called upon when he was appointed as consultor on the Provincial Council of WA and South Australia. In 1986, long after he had left Trinity, and as Deputy Provincial, he continued to support the work of the College when he drafted the initial documentation which led to the establishment of the first Trinity College Board of Management.

For Brother Carrigg his most rewarding work had always been in the classroom teaching English Literature, the subject closest to his heart. In later years he was appointed Associate Professor, School of Humanities at Notre Dame University and is quoted as saying: “The English language is probably the greatest gift the English people have given to the world.”

In 2003, in keeping with the Christian Brothers ethos of reaching out to those less fortunate, Brother Carrigg accepted the opportunity to work in Africa. So great was the need he remained there, working in different locations, for many years.

In 2010, in appreciation of his lifelong commitment to education and to Trinity College, the covered courtyard adjacent to the Brother P L O’Doherty Cultural Centre was named the Brother John Carrigg Court. In 2011, Brother Carrigg opened the new library and science resource centre.

In 2017, Brother John Carrigg retired from his long teaching career, but even in retirement he continued to attend events, and without fail every visit was followed with a handwritten letter of appreciation. With humble thankfulness his last letter to all at the College finished with the words: “… and God Bless your wonderful College, its students and teachers.”

THE OLD TREES AT TRINITY It is said that Brother Carrigg never lost sight of what was best for his students, and he believed the environment they worked in would inspire them to learn.

In appreciation of the magnificent trees planted at Trinity College by Brother John Carrigg, he was asked in 2020 to tell their story: “When the College was established in 1961–62 it presented an unfavourable site for landscaping. No tree had ever grown on the salty river flats, and the beach sand brought in as filling did little to improve the situation. The site was windswept, the groundwater brackish and the whole area badly drained. Some of the early plantings simply died.

I was, more or less, the unofficial grounds manager, as I came from a Roleystone orchard family and my dad used to give me sound advice and free fertiliser!”

“The brothers and I planted a variety of trees at Trinity including eucalyptus, white stemmed paper barks, peppermints (Agonis), the smallleafed native fig and the Norfolk Island Pines.

“Apart from providing shade to students in summer and protection from the winds of winter, trees have the effect of softening the sometimesutilitarian lines of contemporary architecture. They have, too, a particular purpose in the modern world where the air pollution inseparably associated with city living gives them an added importance. Most of all, perhaps, they help to create that indefinable atmosphere associated with all those things which are caught, rather than taught in good schools.”

Class of 2025 A Farewell Grounded in Faith, Friendship and Legacy On Thursday 23 October 2025, the Trinity College community came together to farewell the Class of 2025 in a daylong celebration filled with tradition, reflection and heartfelt connection. The occasion marked the end of the students’ school journey – but more significantly, the beginning of their lifelong connection to the College as Old Boys.

We were all greeted with the perfect morning alongside the Swan River to join in a day of celebration for the Class of 2025. It started with a relaxing TOBA breakfast, where families gathered to reminisce and recount their memories and experiences as members of the TC community.

This was the day the students had been waiting for, and for some the day they would remember the most throughout their journey. We all participated in the ever-present ‘Kodak moments’ and thoroughly

enjoyed the conversations taking place. It is fair to say that all expectations were fully met.

This is an important day because it is the day when these boys become part of TOBA history and join the many who deserve the honour of becoming an Old Boy. This honour was soon realised following the TOBA Assembly, where the transformation is made official with the comical changing of the tie – a process that always keeps us amused, as the students wrestle with wearing their new colours for the first time. The assembly also highlights the importance of the occasion for us all and provides a deeper reflection on the day ahead.

Following the TOBA festivities, it was time to be acknowledged by the whole College at our final assembly, with staff, students and families present. Head Boy Louis Burnett

addressed the congregation and explained to us just how important the Trinity community is towards the growth and development of young men. Louis explained that he was particularly thankful for the support of his fellow Year 12 brothers and discussed at length how vital these relationships were to us all.

The whole-College Assembly capped off an important element of the day.

It was the final piece of the puzzle that the Class of 2025 would take with them as they ventured out of the College gates to forge their own path in this world.

A short realisation of this freedom was enjoyed by all prior to getting organised for our final year-group photo on Mann Oval. It marked the start of the celebration that each student had been waiting for – a clear release from the frustration, knowing that this portion of their education was now completed. A flurry of hats

thrown to the sky symbolised these thoughts as the students cheered the acknowledgement that it was now time to celebrate the remainder of the day with family and friends.

With the early functions completed, students and families enjoyed reflecting on their time at TC. I enjoyed observing the laughter, photo shoots and camaraderie between students and families as they all prepared to head off for some personal reflection in preparation for the Year 12 Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral.

I think we would all agree that the Year 12 Final Mass was a significant spiritual occasion, encompassing a lot of love and emotion among us all.

Following the Acknowledgement of Country, the key introduction from Louis and the presentation of gifts from families, our sacred ceremony was well underway to address the connections that, for some, go back many years.

We will always remember the message from Fra Oscar, that “we plant the seeds that one day will grow” and “we lay the foundations that will need further development”. This is Fra Oscar’s way of teaching us that we are “prophets of a future not our own”.

From the formalities of Mass to the excitement of the final event of the day, the Graduation Dinner did not disappoint. I have spent six years advertising to the students that this is the event and graduation function that they all need to make and will remember fondly. We were once again impressed and emotionally charged at gathering one final time as the Class of 2025. It was a perfect finale.

To Louis Burnett, our Head Boy, I am still in awe of your valedictory speech.

Your words of love truly said it all and I thank you and your Prefect body.

The Class of 2025 leave our College with their heads held high. They have left a lasting imprint: a legacy of a group who is interested in others; a group who has always worked to achieve its goals; and a group who is extremely intelligent. As we are all very aware, there is something very special about this year group.

My hope for the Class of 2025 is for them to never forget what they achieved here at TC. God bless you all and thank you for allowing me to share the past six years with you.

Shrove Tuesday Carigg Court was alive with the Spirit of Faith on Tuesday 17 February, as students across the College tucked into pancakes for Shrove Tuesday to support Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

Led by the Year 12 Faith Prefects and joined by the Junior School Prefects, maple and chocolate syrups were poured liberally over hundreds of pancakes, drawing in students keen to eat their way to their fundraising goal.

Connecting Catholics across the globe ahead of the 40 days before Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Shrove Tuesday comes from the practice of ‘shriving’, where people confessed sins and were absolved before the solemn period of Lent begins.

Pancakes represent the traditional way in which Catholics would use up rich and fatty foods before fasting for Lent, and with more than 1,300 pancakes sold, the Trinity College Shrove Tuesday fundraising total reached a staggering $2,946.

These funds are vital for Caritas to support those living in poverty across the world. Each pancake bought and consumed represents access to emergency kits, clean drinking water and medical intervention, reinforcing our College community as Men for Others.

In 2025, 108 Trinity students were awarded an ATAR, with 46 of those students (43% of our ATAR candidates) achieving an ATAR of 90 or higher. This places them in the top 10% of the nation. Another 24 students (22% of our ATAR candidates) achieved an ATAR of between 80 and 90.

LEADERS FOR TOMORROW JUNIOR SCHOOL Our Junior School leadership structure operates through a three-tier system designed to provide a wide range of leadership opportunities for students while fostering responsibility, service and positive role-modelling across the school. Recognising that some students join the Junior School as early as Year 4, while others enter in later years, this structure provides all students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.

Tier 1: Year 6 Cohort

The Year 6 cohort plays an important leadership role within the school, acting as role models for younger students and providing guidance and support. The students are regularly involved in leading Junior School initiatives, reinforcing behaviour expectations and embodying our school mantra of being Men for Others.

Tier 2: Captains

Our Junior School Captains represent the different pillars of the Junior School. Students apply for these positions through a written application, outlining how they can serve in their area of interest and expertise. Students are appointed as House, Music, Dance and Altar Server Captains.

Tier 3: Prefects

Twelve Junior School Prefects are elected by both staff and peers.

During Term 4 of Year 5, interested students prepare and deliver an application speech before the voting process begins. The successful Junior School Prefects are then announced to the student body following the selection process, with the Junior School Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefect formally announced at the end-of-year Presentation Night.

Together, this three-tier model provides meaningful opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, contribute to the life of the College and actively demonstrate the values of the Junior School community.

LEADERS FOR TOMORROW SENIOR SCHOOL The Student Leadership Model in Senior School at Trinity College is designed to provide leadership opportunities for all students in a variety of realms across College life.

From the early stages of their time at Trinity through to graduation, students are encouraged to build a portfolio of leadership, which encompasses all of their interests and passions during their time here.

Such a portfolio could be used in their application for Prefecture in Year 12, as well as a body of work to present to universities, colleges or prospective places of employment to help demonstrate their capacity to learn, grow and lead in a variety of contexts.

Leadership roles are available in all year groups across every pillar of the College, with every student given the opportunity to lead at some stage during their Senior School journey. While College Prefect is seen as the pinnacle achievement in Year 12, there are also opportunities to lead in the sporting arena, in the arts and in the realm of service.

Any opportunity to lead should be embraced by the students as an opportunity to learn more about themselves, their peers and leadership in general, with the goal of producing young men who are capable of assuming responsibility to achieve both individual and team goals.

Presentation Night 2025 Once again, Presentation Night 2025 proved to be an overwhelming success, as our students showcased their dedication to both the arts and academia.

An important event in the TC calendar, the Presentation Night was held at our own TC Sports Centre on Tuesday 21 October 2025. The venue was at full capacity, with attendance from students, their family and friends, College Leadership, teachers and staff.

After an inspiring Valedictory Address by Class of 2025 Head Prefect Louis Burnett, the Trinity/ Mercedes College Wind Orchestra had the audience captivated with their performance of Deus Ex Machina by Randall Standridge (conducted by Mrs Ventia Webber).

The Principal’s address, by Mr Darren O’Neill, reflected on how proud he was to be a principal of an all-boys school, and how students showed honesty, sincerity, humility and the ability to selfreflect and respond appropriately to correction and guidance.

The event commenced with a Processional piece called Brighton Beach by William Latham (conducted

by Dr Robert Braham). This was followed by a warm welcome from Vice-principal Mrs Sabrina Hughes, who introduced the evening’s dignitaries, Acknowledgement of Country and College Prayer. The audience then joined the impressive Trinity Massed Choir in singing our school hymn In Nomine Domini and 'It’s My Life' by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Samboro and Max Martin (conducted by Dr Robert Braham).

During the formal Presentation of Awards, the TC community had the opportunity to celebrate the Secondary School students’ 2025 achievements in the areas of Academic Studies, Christian Service, Sport and Performing Arts. We also acknowledged the Year 12 Special Awards as well as students who had achieved a Pinder Boor Certificate of Excellence in every semester report in Years 7 to 12. Congratulations to all our student award winners – your dedication and hard work has made us all immensely proud!

The evening also provided our College community the opportunity to formally acknowledge the dedication of our 2025 student leaders, while also announcing our incoming 2026 Prefects. During the ceremony, 2025 Head Prefect Louis Burnett and Deputy Head Prefect Christian Di Biase handed over the mantle of leadership to 2026 Head Prefect Bowie McCabe and Deputy Head Prefect Ryan Tindall. They presented them with three important symbols that serve as powerful reminders of important truths

Other amazing performances throughout the evening consisted of the Trinity Senior Chorale and Vocal Ensemble, who performed 'Forgotten' by Oliver Griffiths and 'Wuh-Duh-Yuh Do with a Drunken Sailor' arranged by Allen Koepke (conducted by Dr Robert Braham and accompanist Mrs Ann Clarke); the Senior Dance Group Imperium, who performed 'Echoes Beneath the Surface – Mind Over Matter' (choreographed by Mrs Paula Nicoletto) and Swing Band One, who performed The Raider Returns by Michael Mossman (directed by Mr Daniel Hart).

The night was fittingly concluded by the Trinity Pipes and Drums, who performed 'Marie’s Wedding', 'Scots Wha Hae', 'The Gael' and 'Auld Lang Syne' (directed by Mr Andrew Barnett and Mr Callum Griffiths), with a final emotional rendition by the Lone Piper of 'Abide with Me'. All performances highlighted the brilliant and diverse range of our Performing Arts students throughout the evening.

Year 6 Graduation The Year 6 Graduation is always a special moment in the life of the Junior School, and this year’s Mass and lunch was no exception.

Graduation marks not only the end of the boys’ primary years, but also the celebration of a cohort who have contributed so positively to our community throughout their time at Trinity College.

From their earliest days in the Junior School, this group of boys has shown what it means to be supportive friends, enthusiastic learners and young men of character. They have built strong, genuine friendships. These connections have been formed on the playground, in classrooms, on camps, the sporing field and through countless shared experiences. The boys’ willingness to include others, look out for their mates and bring energy to school life have helped shape a warm and welcoming culture for all.

JUNIOR SCHOOL PRESENTATION NIGHT The Junior School Presentation Night, held on Friday 28 November 2025, was a memorable celebration of student talent, achievement and community spirit. The evening showcased the boys’ abilities across music, dance and performance, and recognised outstanding accomplishments throughout the year.

The event commenced with a stirring performance from the College Pipes and Drums, who set the tone with an impressive medley. Our Junior School Deputy Head Prefect, Gideon Quinn-Smith, then warmly welcomed the audience, before the Junior Concert Band performed themes from Black Panther, followed by the Junior Symphony Orchestra with a powerful rendition of The Avengers.

Energy filled the stage as the Boys in Groove dance group, led by

Mrs Paula Nicoletto, delivered an engaging routine to Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sapphire’. Our choirs, including the Year 4 Choir, Years 5–6 Choir and Junior Vocal Ensemble, also performed beautifully, highlighting the talent that led to their success at the Performing Arts Festival.

The evening also featured an address from Junior School Head Prefect Marcus Erceg, who spoke with great passion and appreciation for his time in the Junior School.

A range of awards was presented, recognising students for consistent leadership, Christian values and endeavour. Year 6 students were also acknowledged with subject awards for their academic excellence.

The night concluded with a vibrant Year 6 performance of ‘All Star’, followed by the traditional wholeof-Junior School finale In Nomine Domini – a powerful and fitting end to a wonderful evening.

HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The Junior School Swimming Carnival was an exciting and spirited event, and it was fantastic to see how well the boys performed, both in and out of the pool. There was a strong sense of enthusiasm and house pride, with everyone getting involved and supporting one another. The boys showed great determination and sportsmanship, giving their best effort and celebrating each other’s achievements. Their energy helped create a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

A special mention goes to the House Captains, who did an excellent job organising and supporting students in their houses, helping build team spirit and ensuring the day ran smoothly.

Overall, it was a successful day, highlighting the boys’ abilities, teamwork and strong TC Spirit.

Around the Junior School GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Our Junior School leaders recently took part in the National Young Leaders Day conference, where they developed valuable skills in teamwork, communication and leading by example. The course provided practical ideas and strategies to help them make a positive impact within the school.

It was great to see the students engaged and motivated, returning with a stronger sense of responsibility and confidence in their leadership roles.

Our Junior School Opening Mass was a wonderful reminder of the inclusive community in which we all belong to. As a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition, we value moments where we can come together in prayer as we look forward with optimism to the year ahead.

Mass invited us to reflect on the true meaning of leadership. Leadership is often mistaken for a badge or a title, but at its heart it is about service.

The most powerful form of leadership is servant leadership – the commitment to lift others up, to act with humility and to place the needs of the community before our own. Congratulations to our Junior students who received their badges and were appointed House, Music, Dance and Altar Server Captains. A special thank you to all who were able to join us. It was lovely to see the College Chapel full of parents and guests.

JUNIOR SPORTS NEWS

It has been a vibrant and actionpacked start to the year on the Junior School sporting field, with Term 1 providing plenty of opportunities for students to compete, develop their skills and enjoy representing their houses and the College.

The first major event on the calendar was the House Swimming Carnival – always a highlight of the Junior School sporting year.

In the weeks leading up to the carnival, boys participated in trials and preparation sessions, building excitement and friendly rivalry between the houses. When carnival day arrived, the pool deck was filled with energy, as students cheered on their teammates and gave their best in the water. Congratulations to Chanel, who finished the day as overall champions and proudly took home the House Swimming Cup. The swimming season continued shortly afterwards with the JPSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival.

Our team showed outstanding commitment in the lead-up to the event, attending multiple early morning training sessions each week. Those early starts and countless laps were all part of preparing to represent the College at the highest level. On the day, the boys competed with determination and pride, giving their best in every race. While we were unable to bring home the trophy this year, the team represented Trinity exceptionally well. Congratulations to Scotch College on their victory.

Summer sport also began in earnest in Term 1, marking an exciting milestone for our Year 5 students, many of whom are experiencing weekly school sport for the first time.

Students have the opportunity to represent the College in basketball, cricket, tennis, volleyball and water polo, with teams training each Wednesday morning before taking to the court, field or pool on Thursday afternoons. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship shown by our young athletes.

Our Year 4 students have also been hard at work preparing for their upcoming basketball carnival against Aquinas College. As part of their preparation, the boys were fortunate to take part in specialised skills clinics run by NBL1 players from the Perth Redbacks. The sessions were a fantastic experience, giving the students the chance to learn from elite players, while building their confidence and excitement ahead of the carnival.

It has been a fantastic start to the year for Junior School sport, and we look forward to many more opportunities for the boys to challenge themselves, support their teammates and represent Trinity with pride throughout the year.

SENIOR SPORTS NEWS

ROWING BASKETBALL The Trinity Basketball program continues to see strong participation from Years 7–12, with Middle School teams highly competitive in the PSA competition, and impressive performances from the Year 10A and 2nds teams highlighting the program’s depth. Led by Kerry Clarke, the 1st team showed steady improvement throughout the season, holding leads against competition powerhouses Aquinas and Hale.

Strong performances in Term 1 saw the team finish in an excellent third position in the Blackwood Cup.

In Trinity’s 2025/26 rowing season, expectations were high following recent Hamer Cup success. The Year 9 crews set the tone early, while dominant performances from the Year 10 boats and 2nds highlighted the program’s depth.

After a fierce contest with Aquinas, the 1st VIII produced an outstanding performance to finish second at the Head of the River. Capping off a strong campaign, Trinity secured the Hamer Cup once again, reinforcing its status as a rowing powerhouse.

VOLLEYBALL

After winning the Brother Carrigg Shield last season, this year was always set to be one of transition for the 1st VI Volleyball team. Led by the remaining Year 12s, the team established a strong standard for the younger players, who showed great promise throughout the season.

Impressive wins against Scotch, Guildford and Wesley – both home and away – saw the team finish in fourth place. With strong numbers across all year groups, Trinity Volleyball can look forward to a bright future.

TENNIS

WATER POLO

Trinity Cricket experienced significant growth this season, with more than 50 Year 7 students involved and six senior teams competing in the PSA. The 1st XI entered the year with high expectations, yet, while they showed strong moments throughout the season, were unable to consistently deliver across full fixtures.

Despite this, the team finished in a commendable fourth position, and with many players returning next year, the future looks promising.

After winning the Corr Cup two years ago and finishing second last year, the 1st VIII entered the season aiming to remain among the top three schools. Despite the players’ strong commitment to both training and matches, a youthful line-up – largely due to injuries – found it difficult to match the leading PSA teams.

Although Trinity finished in fifth position, the future remains promising for the Tennis program.

With a record number of senior students playing Water Polo this season, and many returning from last year’s squad, expectations were high for a competitive campaign.

While the team showed flashes of its potential against all opponents, consistency proved challenging across the season. Despite the players’ efforts and development, it was ultimately a difficult year for the 1st VII, who finished in sixth place.

HONOURING OUR ORDER OF AUSTRALIA RECIPIENTS As a College, Trinity has always celebrated the aspirations and accomplishments of our students. Just as important and significant are the achievements of our fellow colleagues – and the opportunity to boast having not one, but two recipients of The Order of Australia (OA) honour awards.

The Order of Australia recognises outstanding service and exceptional achievements by Australians across various fields, with awards given in multiple levels. Each candidate undergoes a lengthy and methodical selection process, which can take from 18 months to two years or more to complete.

In 2021, Trinity College’s first recipient was our Director of Performing Arts, Dr Robert Braham, who was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to choral music and

community choir work since 1990.

His earlier accomplishments included directing the Perth Oratorio Choir, founding the West Australian Youth Choir and ‘Voyces’, a youth-intoadult choir. Today, Robert continues to conduct national level choirs and, closer to home, lead our TC senior students at international festivals worldwide. Though the industry has its challenges, such as obtaining funding and grants to support these initiatives, Robert continues to use his experience to raise the profile of Perth choirs in WA and beyond our shores.

Our second high achiever is 2025 recipient Mr Barry McKenna. Barry was awarded an OAM for his service to the communities of Perth. His history is well established in politics within the local government and community sector. A small snapshot of his achievements includes serving as Mayor of the City of Bayswater (the longest serving council member), Zone Delegate within the WA Local Government Association, Deputy Chair for the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council, a former representative at the Municipal Waste Advisory Council for WA and a part of the steering committee at Community Banking in Bayswater. Barry continues his community work in addition to serving the TC community as a Humanities teacher.

Both OAM recipients echo the same mantra – that supporting and contributing to their community has created purpose, joy and opportunities, both personally and for others. Their message is to start small and build your skills, do as much as you can and take the opportunities that come along.

Becoming Men FORMING YOUNG MEN WITH STRONG VIRTUES

Character formation within schools is increasing in focus, as the realisation that developing good humans with strong values is a priority that both parents and teachers place on the young people in their care.

The Jubilee Centre for Character & Virtues (2022) states that “whilst parents are the primary educators of their children’s character, empirical research tells us that parents want all adults who have contact with their children to contribute to such education, especially their children’s teachers”.

Indeed, producing young men who are compassionate, empathetic, responsible and resilient is a primary focus of a Trinity College education.

These are the kinds of virtues upon which solid foundations can be built to provide our students with the best chance of success on whichever path they choose to tread beyond their teenage years. Further to this purpose, “the more people exhibit good character and virtues, the healthier our society” (Jubilee Centre for Character & Virtues, 2022). With

this in mind, teaching our students the meaning of good character sits at the forefront of everything we do.

The caught, taught and sought model of character virtues helps us to make sense of how such virtuous behaviour can be established, nurtured and developed within young people, with the purpose of producing the type of young adults who parents, schools and society as a whole can be proud of. In essence, our students can be caught doing good and taught how to be good, and further virtues of goodness can be sought by the individual.

At Trinity College, our APA and Crowns system is just one example of how desirable virtues are regularly caught and celebrated by our community, while our numerous service and immersion programs are

examples of how our students can seek to embody these virtues.

The Resilience Project and our formation programs are examples of how we explicitly teach these virtues within an educational setting.

These programs provide students with specifically designated time and space each week to examine their own values with the purpose of determining the type of man they want to become, and how they could achieve this vision.

At the heart of these programs is our Year 9 Becoming Men formation program, which has been a part of our timetable for more than 15 years and continues to evolve to stay in tune with the ever-changing social landscape that our students find themselves in. Within the program, students are challenged to move

away from their boyhood, and the behaviours and habits which characterise the early parts of their lives, towards young adulthood, where virtues such as responsibility, accountability and empathy are explored, cultivated and embraced.

To begin the year, all Year 9 students took part in a reflection day at The University of Western Australia, whereby they considered their life to date, how they have come to be at this point in their young lives, and who have been the main influences that have helped them get there. The day was punctuated by our Becoming Men Opening Ceremony – Beginning the Becoming – celebrated with their families in McCabe Court by the Swan River on a beautiful late-summer evening.

This day and night drew our students’ attention to the vitality of this program, and marked the beginning of them becoming the young men they dream of one day being.

A few weeks into the program, students invited their fathers and father-figures to our annual River Walk – a sunrise event which invites fathers of our Year 9 students to spend some quality time together walking from Trinity College across to the South Perth foreshore, exploring questions about each other’s lives which may not come up in everyday

conversation. The event was highlighted by two guest speakers – an Old Boy of the College and his father – who shared their own Trinity journey from the perspective of a father and son, and the importance of their relationship in overcoming the challenges and celebrating the triumphs that high school inevitably brings.

To round out the term, students identified another significant male in their lives to mentor them through the remainder of the year, and invited them along to our Mentor Movie Night. The evening was a chance for the students to get together with someone they know and trust in a casual setting, sharing their life experiences, with the purpose of developing a shared perspective on the challenges which lie ahead for our Year 9s. A viewing of the film The Peanut Butter Falcon always provides some excellent talking points about mentorship, reaching for our goals, respect for others and celebration of diversity. Moving forward, our students’ mentors will provide a casual sounding board whenever they’re available for our developing young men to lean on at different times throughout the year. Year 9 mentors and fathers will also be invited to our Towards Manhood workshop with Daniel Principe next term.

Looking ahead, the program spends the entirety of Term 2 examining the importance of the women in our boys’ lives through discussions about respectful relationships and how to present their best selves as a show of gratitude and kindness to those who deserve it the most. The term is punctuated by two significant events: our Respectful Relationships workshop with the Year 9 students from Mercedes College, and our annual Mother–Son Night to Shine shared dinner.

This semester’s worth of exploration and discovery is designed to establish with our students the importance of those people in their lives who have had the greatest influence on them so far, and who will continue to provide the love and support they crave, which will help them flourish heading into young adulthood. The program, as a whole, is emblematic of a key priority at Trinity College – that is, to produce genuine men for all others who are meaningful contributors to a society which is continually being challenged by trends that do not always mirror Gospel values upon which a strong Catholic community is based.

Visual Arts and Design & Technology Exhibition

VISUAL ARTS

The Visual Arts and Design & Technology Exhibition, held in November 2025, was a wonderful success. The opening night celebrated the creativity, dedication and talent of our students and provided an opportunity for the school community to recognise their achievements. We thank parents and families who attended and supported the event – their enthusiasm helps make the exhibition a highlight of the school year.

The exhibition featured an impressive collection of artworks from Years 4–12 across drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, mixed media and sculpture.

Our senior ATAR students produced thoughtful, expressive and highly accomplished artworks exploring issues of personal significance and demonstrating both conceptual depth and refined technical skill.

Middle and Junior School projects were equally impressive, reflecting students’ imagination, experimentation and developing artistic ability.

The exhibition was a terrific celebration of student creativity and commitment, and we are proud of the outstanding artistic achievements displayed by all students involved.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

The Design and Technology projects on display from Years 7–12 showcased exceptional levels of creativity and craftsmanship at the Visual Art and Design & Technology Exhibition. The exhibition featured work from across all design and technology areas, including Materials – Wood, Materials – Metal, Engineering Studies, Design and Product Design.

The senior ATAR Design folios were particularly impressive this year, with their detailed development, vibrant presentation and strong visual impact creating a striking feature on the central wall of the exhibition.

Middle School projects were equally impressive, demonstrating the wide range of skills, processes, materials and technologies that students explore at Trinity College.

A large and enthusiastic audience of parents and Trinity families attended the opening night once again. In addition, 2025 marked the first time the exhibition opened to the wider public on the following Sunday afternoon. Many families took the opportunity to return with grandparents and friends to enjoy a slower, more reflective viewing experience.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I am happy to say that 2025 finished strongly for TOBA, with a full schedule of events. There were some excellent highlights and a continuation of record attendances at popular events.

We were delighted to host a reunion in Sydney that was well attended and very much appreciated by our Old Boys living in New South Wales. Several enthusiastic Alumni flew to Sydney for the gathering. We will hold the 2026 interstate reunion in Melbourne.

Golden Heritage Club members (past students who left the College 50-plus years ago) were interviewed

by Year 6s. Following the interviews, students and their new Old Boy buddies shared lunch. This event is a favourite among students, teachers and Old Boys, and we thank Junior School staff for embracing this special event. The Golden Heritage Club has gone from strength to strength since its commencement in 2011.

In September, TOBA held an event for R U OK? Day for the fourth time. Attendees enjoyed coffee, snacks and a catch-up around the coffee van, which is always much appreciated by staff.

We saw some fantastic competition at the Winter Sports Day. TOBA was successful in securing the Brendan Ryan Cup again in 2025, winning Cross Country, Hockey and Rugby, while students won the Football.

Soccer was a draw. Thank you to everyone who arranged teams, umpired, cooked a snagger or just came along to have a laugh.

Graduation Breakfast, where Old Boy from the Class of 1998, Andrew Embley, was guest speaker. Andrew is a celebrated former AFL West Coast Eagles player, best known as the 2006 Norm Smith Medallist and a 250-game veteran. A highprofile midfielder/forward and Vice-captain (2004–07), he was a key figure in the Eagles' 2006 premiership win. Known for his resilience and versatility, Andrew shared his school experience with the boys and how school built foundations for his success, both on the football field and in business.

We always close out the social calendar with the annual sundowner, where we thank all those involved with, or supportive of, TOBA. The event was well attended, and a personal highlight was seeing the diversity in age among the Old Boys who have served on the committee or supported the Alumni spirit over the year.

TOBA continues to support the College as much as possible.

The Association continues to support many College associations and sporting teams. As always, we endeavour to support our Alumni professionally, socially and emotionally as much as we can.

I publicly thank the TOBA Committee for their work throughout the past year. The 19 committee members have selflessly dedicated hours of their own time to the wide variety of events we sponsor

and host. They cook hundreds of sausages, dress up as Father Christmas, attend assemblies and Masses, and undertake lots of other thankless tasks.

We offer a warm thank you to the College Principal, Mr Darren O’Neill, and the Leadership Team for their ongoing and continued support of TOBA by granting access to the College facilities and having great patience with our passionate Alumni.

My final thanks for 2025 goes to both Di Millar and Vanessa Strohmeier – I thank them both for their continued hard work, as well as their strong belief in TOBA and the TC Spirit.

I’d like to take a moment to remember and honour the Old Boys in our community who have passed during the year. These ambassadors and stalwarts have each contributed to this incredible community and will remain in our hearts.

We are looking forward to running another full calendar of events in 2026, plus the usual milestone reunions.

Herb Elliott was honoured to be inducted into the 2025 TOBA Sporting Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements in Athletics at last year’s Sportsmen’s Lunch.

ALEX BARBAS (‘09) EPIC RUN

Alex Barbas (‘09) completed an epic run in December 2025 from Sydney to Perth and back to Sydney, taking 98 days and raising $108,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Now he's been recognised on the national stage, having been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to the print and broadcast media.

With not a day off, Alex ran 80 km a day, encountering road trains, 44-degree temperatures and roadkill until he achieved his goal for a run which has never been done before!

Peter was honoured in this year’s Australia Day Honours List and is one of 34 recipients of awards presented at Government House earlier this year. These awards included two Officer of the Order of Australia awards, 11 Members of the Order of Australia awards and 21 Medals of the Order of Australia.

In sharing his journey with us, Alex said how much his time at Trinity has shaped his discipline and motivation, especially the lessons from Mr Jamieson and tennis training days. Alex encourages our students to endure, stay focused and be consistent.

He’s been a volunteer with Starlight for nine years – so, he’s not just running, he’s also giving back in a big way.

PSA GOLF DAY A great day was enjoyed by a full field of 140 players at the Cottesloe Golf Club for the 2025 PSA Old Boys’ Golf Day. The course was in pristine condition, and the good weather held on just until the finish.

The Scotch boys jumped out from the start, leaving the other teams behind to win the shield for 2025.

Thanks to the Old Boys who played in this event – we look forward to Trinity climbing the ladder in 2026.

GRADUATION BREAKFAST The Trinity-Terrace Old Boys’ Association (TOBA) welcomed the Class of 2025 into its community on the morning of Thursday 23 October.

The day commenced with an informal breakfast held at Centenary Park, where Year 12 students, their families and loved ones gathered to celebrate the significant milestone of graduating in the Class of 2025.

Following breakfast, formalities took place in the Sports Centre. TOBA President Mr Dion Smith (’87) officially welcomed the Class of 2025 to the TOBA community and, as is tradition, asked graduating students to stand and face their parents before he said these words on their behalf: “Mum and Dad – thank you for every parent involvement of my schooling journey; for every early morning drop-off; late night pick-up; getting me out of bed; making recess and lunches (that sometimes didn’t get eaten); constantly paying for and replacing lost uniforms and sporting items; helping with homework – until Year 10 when the content got a little too hard for you; watching

me at weekend sport; your financial sacrifices for school fees and various interstate and overseas trips; and for your unconditional love and support.”

Graduating students and all in attendance applauded these very special parents.

Dion spoke about how the students now join more than 14,500 other Old Boys who have worn the same uniform, competed against the same sporting rivals, sung the same war cries and had hundreds of other shared experiences. It is our hope to see them remain involved and connected to this incredible community and the many ways to achieve this.

Dion then welcomed the guest speaker: “I would like to introduce your guest speaker for today, from the Class of 1998, Andrew Embley.

Andrew’s a former Australian Rules footballer who played in the AFL with the West Coast Eagles. He is known

for winning the Norm Smith Medal as the best player in the 2006 AFL Grand Final.”

Andrew addressed graduating students and their families with some wonderful memories, insights and messages. He spoke to boys about building resilience in your journey through school and life.

A huge thank you goes to the Trinity College Auxiliary for providing a wonderful breakfast for families.

Thank you also to everyone who assisted on the day, including the maintenance and grounds team and TOBA Executive Committee members for cooking up a storm.

A special mention goes to Mr David Allen, Head of Year 12, for his outstanding contribution, commitment and dedication, and care of the graduating Class of 2025 and their journey.

On Friday 13 November 2026 we invite the Class of 2025 to meet at The Shoe Bar, in Yagan Square (owned by Paul Higgins, Class of 1982).

This will be your first anniversary reunion, so look for the TOBA flag at the bar and the first round will be on TOBA.

GOLDEN HERITAGE CLUB MEMBERS GO

‘BACK TO THE CLASSROOM’

In July, Golden Heritage Club members ranging from the Class of 1956 to the Class of 1975 went 'Back to the Classroom' to be interviewed by Year 6 students. As always, the Old Boys enjoyed sharing stories of their school days with the Year 6s.

After the interviews, students walked with their new buddies to Gibney Hall, where conversations continued over lunch before the commencement of the Junior School Assembly. Special guest Peter Torre (’89) explained the meaning of and changes to the Trinity Crests over the years, before presenting the TOBA President’s Award for the TC Spirit to Reuben Chok (6 Blue).

We thank our wonderful Old Boys for returning to the classroom. Also, thank you to our Year 6 students and Junior School staff for embracing this most enjoyable annual event.

2025 WINTER SPORTS DAY TOBA WINS THE ‘BRENDAN RYAN ('91) CUP’ There were heavy downpours at Waterford Playing Fields as players and supporters turned up to the TOBA Winter Sports Day on Sunday 20 July.

TOBA was triumphant, with three wins and a draw across five sports, accepting the Brendan Ryan Cup again this year.

A big thank you to Brendan Ryan (’91), the man behind the name of the winner’s trophy, for his attendance and uplifting address delivered by his carer.

For those not aware of the history behind the cup, Brendan Ryan was diagnosed in 1989 with leukaemia while in Year 10 at Trinity College.

He was left with severe physical impairments and confined to a wheelchair following medical treatment during his long battle with the illness. To recognise Brendan’s fighting spirit, the Brendan Ryan Cup began in 2001. Brendan is a remarkable Old Boy, who continues to excel in life.

The medal for the TC Spirit was presented to Phil Curtis (’87) for being 34

the oldest competitor to participate in the day. Phil was part of the TOBA Hockey team.

SYDNEY REUNION 2025 A cohesive group of Old Boys attended the recent Sydney Reunion.

updated the group on the progress of the College and all things TC/TOBA.

Pre-dinner drinks were enjoyed at The Squire’s Landing on a perfect Sydney evening, with views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, before a short walk to a private room at the Harbour View Hotel, in The Rocks.

Conversation and laughter flowed freely, as the group rekindled old connections and made new ones.

Attendees included Old Boys living in Sydney, some who had travelled from WA and a couple of close connections, including Mercedes Old Girls. Old Boys ranged from the Class of 1963 to the Class of 2023.

It was clear early in the evening that a 60-year age difference is no barrier when you have a shared connection of Trinity College.

A special luncheon was held to celebrate the anniversary of the classes of 1950 and 1955 to acknowledge 75 and 70 years respectively since leaving their beloved CBC Perth.

welcomed the Old Boys into the restaurant with a tune played on his bagpipes. The lunch began with a glass raised in honour of classmates who are no longer with us. Over lunch, many jokes, laughs and stories were shared, and old College Annuals were viewed.

CLASS OF 1965 – 60TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION The Class of 1965 celebrated their 60th anniversary reunion with a quick tour of TC before heading to the Staff Lounge for drinks and canapes.

CLASS OF 1995 – 30TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION The Class of 1995 celebrated their 30-year reunion at the Stables bar on 18 October 2025. Despite it being 10, 20 and in some cases 30 years since seeing one another, it was like it was only yesterday, as we shared stories and memories of old times and new. It was a great night, catching up with old friends and reminiscing on the good times at TC all those years ago.

REUNION OF OLD BOYS FROM PIPES AND DRUMS On 21 October 2025 a group of Pipers and Drummers assembled to play tunes at the Trinity College Senior Presentation Night.

This event was an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the TC Pipes and Drums throughout the year and to farewell the Year 12s in the band.

There were a couple of practices in the lead-up to the night’s performance that were well received.

CLASS OF 1970 – 55TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION

CLASS OF 2020 – 5TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION The Class of 2020 five-year reunion at the Shoe Bar was an enjoyable night and gave us Old Boys a chance to reflect on how quickly time has gone.

An enthusiastic band of ‘Old’ Boys got together at Chelsea Social on 8 October 2025.

It had been 55 years since we said farewell to Trinity College and made our way from adolescence through emerging adulthood to middle age.

While it was a familiar path for most Old Boys – involving higher education, work, romance, family and children, successes and setbacks – how each of us got to the ripe old age of 72 is the stuff school reunions are made of.

Intermingled with the tall tales from the past were the life stories of our old mates who we parted company with way back in 1970.

It was a reminder that growing apart doesn't change the fact that for

a long time we grew side-by-side and our exposure to the standards and principles instilled in us by the Christian Brothers underpins our common bond.

A toast to absent friends reminded us that there were those Old Boys and teachers who had been less fortunate, but our fond memories of those classmates had not dimmed.

Many of us were easily recognisable, although some faces required a little more scrutiny. Thank God for the name tags!

A wonderful afternoon of food, frivolity and fun confirmed that for many Old Boys, life had been pretty good!

As the class of 2020, it feels strange to realise that we have now almost been out of school for as long as we were there. Getting to catch up with friends we hadn’t seen in years was a highlight. Even our Head of Year Joel Shinkfield made an appearance, and I know all the boys appreciated seeing him.

It was easy to fall back into conversation with everyone. Getting to share what we’ve all been doing since leaving Trinity was fun. While some were making their way through university, others had been doing full-time work for years, and that kind of difference helped make the night so memorable.

The night was relaxed and fun, with plenty of laughs, stories and moments that reminded us of school in the best way.

I look forward to seeing everyone again, whether it’s next week or at the 10-year reunion.

CLASS OF 2005 – 20TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION As October ended, the Trinity class of 2005 came together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of leaving the gates at Nelson Crescent. Time seems to have treated the entirety of the year group gracefully, and it became popular to comment how easily recognisable everyone still was despite the passing of two decades.

Through a combination of word-ofmouth and scouring social media channels, approximately 60 of the cohort made it to the Baby Shoe to reflect on our time at TC and what the 20 years since has brought.

The class of 2005 sits happily in the Trinity record books as the last class to win the Darlot and Alcock Cup and Shields during their leaving year, and it seems that excellence has followed them out of the school, as leaders have emerged in law, mining, construction, diplomacy and more, as we all caught each other up on the years gone by.

Though professional success abounds, it was clear that most in the room were mainly excited to talk about new families that they were growing and lifestyles they were enjoying. It is heartwarming to see the men we have all become, and to reflect on the formative years that TC played in shaping us.

Much gratitude must be relayed to Paul and Jo Higgins at The Shoe who continue to support TOBA events and were fantastic hosts on our night, to the extent that Paul poured two

rounds of a complimentary toast to the group when we too hastily indulged in the first round before Paul could issue his call-to-arms!

His passion for the school and willingness to support events such as ours are testament to the enriching community established by Trinity Old Boys throughout WA. The room was full of loud conversation, and it was agreed that 10 years might be too long to pass before the next event is coordinated among this group, with the intent for the Silver Jubilee to be celebrated in 2030.
