WARDEN’S REPORT As Trinity’s new Warden in 2026, I am delighted to report on the College’s achievements from the previous year. 2025 was a year of significant activity at Trinity, with a number of important developments across the life of the College. Among these was the College’s continued commitment to examining its culture and listening carefully to the experience of its community. A second independent review of Trinity’s residential culture was commissioned, building on the original Neave Review released in 2019. The findings, published in early 2025, reflect an ongoing focus on strengthening the experience of all Trinity residents. The College accepted the recommendations of the review and committed to addressing them in full. A significant milestone in the life of the College was the opening of the A C C Farran Hall and Kitchens Precinct in March. This project was envisaged following the opening of the Dorothy residential building in 2020, which increased the residential community to 380 and highlighted the need to renew and expand our dining facilities. Delayed by the pandemic, construction on the Hall commenced in late 2022 and culminated in a redevelopment of lasting significance. It represents one of the most substantial capital undertakings by the College in recent years, not only in scale, but also in its affirmation of the Dining Hall as one of the three key centres of our communal life on our Parkville campus alongside the library and the Chapel. This remarkable addition to the campus would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors, most notably Andrew Farran. The year also saw the College continuing to expand its presence at the Victoria Street campus, taking on two additional floors to complement those already leased. This expansion has enabled a significant enhancement of the Pathways School facilities, including additional lecture and tutorial spaces as well as library and study areas, and improved social, staff and wellbeing environments. Together, these additions support a more integrated and contemporary student experience. Alongside this investment in the College’s physical environment, the year also saw important developments in its governance. In May, Kirsten Gray was appointed Chair of the Trinity College Board, succeeding Kerry Gleeson following the completion of her four-year term. This sense of change was further evident in June, when Professor Ken Hinchcliff announced his intention to step down as Warden in February 2026 after a decade of service. Ken’s tenure was marked by clarity of purpose and resilience, most notably in steering the College through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His deep commitment to Trinity has left the College well positioned for the future. During the year, the College also progressed its strategic priorities, with a particular focus on its people and community. Advancements in the People Strategy included enhancements to leave provisions, expanded opportunities for learning and development, and a renewed emphasis on wellbeing. These initiatives reflect a simple conviction: that it is our people who define the character and strength of Trinity. In parallel, the College formalised its endowment strategy, ensuring a sound financial foundation to support its scholarship ambitions, while enabling a more deliberate consideration of Trinity’s future. This work invites us to think more expansively about the College’s role – how it might enable meaningful change, pursue greater diversity, and act with intention in service of the common good. It speaks to a vision of Trinity not only as a place of learning, but as a community with the confidence to look outward and contribute thoughtfully to the wider world. Here are the 2025 updates from around the College.
THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL
PATHWAYS SCHOOL
2025 proved to be a positive year for the Theological School. Across its programs, there were 24 undergraduates, 75 postgraduate students, 8 research master’s students and 11 PhD candidates.
Trinity’s Pathways School continued to perform strongly in a challenging environment, enrolling some 1340 students; nearly 200 more than in 2024.
Alongside its regular curriculum at Parkville, the Theological School continued its longstanding partnership with the St James’ Institute, offering the intensive unit Anglican Church Law and Governance as part of the Trinity in Sydney program. In September and October, the Dean of the Theological School, the Revd Associate Professor Bob Derrenbacker, led a study tour to Asia Minor (modern-day Türkiye), attended by students and members of the wider Trinity community. The year also marked important milestones for students, with 24 graduates recognised at the University of Divinity’s March graduation ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral. In addition, two students were ordained to the Order of Deacons in February, and a further two to the Order of Priests in November. Scholarly work continued at a high level, with a significant body of research published across the year, including the Revd Associate Professor Fergus King’s book Stoicism and the Gospel of John: A Study of their Compatibility. The Revd Professor Mark Lindsay also spent three months as a visiting fellow at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, where he commenced work on a new book on supersessionism and a collaborative research project on hope and dignity.
RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE In 2025, the Residential College operated at full capacity, with demand for places remaining strong. A total of 579 applications were received for 135 available places, while retention rates remained high, with 90% of first-year and 70% of second-year students returning. The student cohort represented 83 schools across Australia and internationally, and financial assistance was provided to 82 students, with total scholarships amounting to $2.8 million. Academic and co-curricular engagement remained central to the residential experience. The Academic Program team delivered 575 one-on-one consultations and 171 tutorials, supported by a range of complementary initiatives including fireside conversations, career sessions and networking opportunities with alumni and guest speakers. A total of 116 academic awards were presented during the year, including the introduction of a new initiative recognising students who achieved a High First-Class Weighted Average Mark (WAM) across five consecutive semesters.
The expansion of the College’s presence at the Victoria Street campus played an important role in supporting this growth. The acquisition of the additional two floors enabled enhanced teaching and student facilities and helped offset a reduction in available space at the Parkville campus as a result of the library redevelopment commencing in 2026. In recent times, there has been a noticeable shift in the student profile. While students from China remain a significant cohort, there has also been strong growth from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is now the second largest source of students and approaching the size of the China group. This shift is contributing to increased diversity within the Pathways community. The Pathways School team continued to focus on both consolidating established markets and building emerging ones. Ongoing priorities include the diversification of programs and delivery modes, as well as improvements to systems and processes that support the student journey, enhance admissions and strengthen conversion from offer to enrolment.
ADVANCEMENT AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT The work of the Advancement and Alumni team gathered further momentum in 2025, with strong participation across a wide program of events and initiatives. More than 6580 people attended 85 events held across seven cities and four countries, including the ever-popular Drinks Under the Oak, which attracted more than 300 attendees. The College hosted 18 visiting scholars during the year, including the two Gourlay Visiting Professors in Business Ethics, Professor Manoj Dora and Professor Chellie Spiller, who delivered the 2025 Gourlay Lecture to an audience of more than 150 guests. Philanthropic support remained central to the life of the College, with cash donations totalling $2.9 million from 424 donors, alongside pledges of $3.5 million. Engagement within the alumni community continued to grow, with 4335 members registered on My Trinity Connect, and more than 2000 indicating their willingness to contribute as volunteers through initiatives such as event hosting, internships and student mentoring. These achievements reflect the strength and generosity of the Trinity community. They are made possible by the dedication of our staff, the energy of our students and the enduring support of our alumni and friends.
The year also saw continued investment in leadership development and community wellbeing. The Senior Student and Trinity College Associated Clubs (TCAC) participated in a tailored leadership program, resulting in the development of a Student Leadership Strategic Plan to guide priorities and initiatives within the residential community. Training and development remained a key focus, with 14 modules delivered across the year by the Dean’s team, the Wellbeing Service and external providers. These included programs tailored to both new and returning students, alongside specialised training for student leaders and residential staff. Topics ranged from first aid, alcohol and drug education, and consent, to Indigenous cultural understanding and the Residential College Code of Conduct – reflecting the College’s commitment to fostering a respectful and cohesive living environment.

STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr Yiqian Katherine Cao gave a plenary talk at the Trinity College Teaching and Learning Conference in June 2025 on the topic ‘Student engagement – understanding how students move from silence to willingness to communicate (WTC)’. Her publication included a coauthored journal article ‘To revise or to recommend: An exploratory sequential mixed method study on GenAI formative feedback on reading assessment in secondary schools’, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching (Sept 2025): 1-19. George Haswell completed a Specialist Certificate in Implementation Science at the University of Melbourne, an interdisciplinary program focused on the systematic translation of research evidence into practice. As part of this course, he undertook a capstone project examining the implementation of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to preventing gender-based violence in Australian tertiary residential settings, with a focus on identifying key enablers, barriers, and strategies to support effective, sustained implementation. Professor Ken Hinchcliff continued as an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne (“h” index of 61) and as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, which continues to be a top-ranked veterinary clinical journal. Ken was elected an honorary diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2025 to recognise his long contribution to the health and wellbeing of athletic horses. He is a member of the Listing Group of the Fédération Equestre International, which advises on drug and medication use in sports horses (Olympics, World Equestrian Games). Ken delivered a small number of lectures in the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences and is a member of several graduate student committees at the University of Melbourne. He is a member of the Equine Limb Injury Steering Committee of the University of Melbourne and Racing Victoria Ltd and joined the Gift Committee of the University of Melbourne in 2024. He joined the Board

of the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in 2025. Ken is a collaborator on a project investigating respiratory disease in and poor performance in racehorses in Hong Kong. He is lead editor of the third edition of the textbook ‘Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery’ (1300 pp, Elsevier), published in March 2024, and is an author of four chapters in that text. He delivered invited lectures at the European College of Equine Internal Medicine conference in Liverpool and participated in a conference on welfare of the racehorse convened by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The Revd Professor Mark Lindsay attended the ‘Heads, Hearts, and Hands’ symposium for the Australian Council of Christians and Jews, co-hosted by Trinity College Theological School, in February. Later in February, he was a delegate to the ‘Christology in Light of Contemporary Jewish-Christian Relations’ conference in Rome, which was co-sponsored by ACU and the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion. There, he presented a paper entitled ‘Johannine Christology Since Nostre Aetate’. From July to October, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, NJ. He presented two colloquium papers while there. The first was entitled ‘Replacing Replacement: A Constructive View of Supersessionism Through the Prism of Eschatology’. The second paper, for a McDonald Agape Foundation colloquium on the ‘Church Outside of Christendom’, was entitled ‘Etsi ecclesia non daretur: Riffing on Bonhoeffer’s Riff on Grotius’. Mark also published two book chapters: ‘PostHolocaust Theology’, in P. Ziegler & R. David Nelson (eds), T&T Clark Handbook of Modern Theology, (T&T Clark/Bloomsbury, 2025); and ‘The God Who is For Us is Also For Them’, in O.D. Crisp & P. Nimmo (eds), The God Who is For Us: Explorations in Constructive Dogmatics, (Zondervan, 2025). He served as an expert assessor for the Australian Research Council’s Future Fellowship program, and continued his membership of the Theological Advisory Committee of the Australian Council of Christians and Jews.
Emily McAuliffe produced feature articles and photography for a number of publications, including Traveller (The Age/ Sydney Morning Herald), Travel + Leisure Asia, Australian Traveller and The Road Ahead (RACQ). She also appeared as a travel expert on ABC Radio, and judged the British Guild of Travel Writers annual awards. Lyn Shalless completed a Graduate Diploma of Divinity and commenced a Master of Theological Studies through Trinity College Theological School, University of Divinity. Dr Benjamin Thomas presented a paper titled ‘Beyond the Ivied Curtain: Recovering lost identifies from within a residential collegiate community’, at the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) National Conference, Telling Our Stories: Community, Connection, Resilience, held in Sydney in November. He also presented ‘‘It has long been an aspiration ...’: Collegiate voice in print at Trinity College’, at the 2025 Fellow & Friends of History (SHAPS) 20th Anniversary Conference, Through Student Eyes: student publications as the lens for a history of the University of Melbourne 1855–2025, held at the University of Melbourne, also in November. Ben attended the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) Special Interest Group (SIG), to deliver a presentation, ‘TROVE: Mining the nation’s treasures’, on the National Library of Australia’s TROVE database at the SIG meeting held at the Academy of Mary Immaculate, Fitzroy, in September. He attended the Professional Historians Association (Vic & Tas) Skills Sharing workshop on project management for commissioned history projects in July, and the skills sharing workshop on publishing in March. He served in a voluntary capacity on the catering team for the SUFM Tidal River beach mission, Wilson’s Promontory, during January. Keir Wotherspoon presented ‘Networking: a history of a resilient idea in the American Counterculture, 1966 to 1982’ in November 2025 at the Australian and New Zealand American Studies Association Biennial Conference: Democracy and Resilience, University of Melbourne.
