WARDEN’S REPORT We release this report in a time of uncertainty, when our usual teaching and living arrangements have been turned on their head as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

However, Trinity College has quickly adapted to the emerging situation and the challenges it brings, and that’s largely because of the incredible staff we have, and the groundwork laid in prior years to put Trinity is good stead to weather this change.

This report reflects our achievements in 2019, which have certainly put us on track for continued success. A particular highlight of 2019 was bringing three new Deans on board – Richard Pickersgill, the Revd Canon Dr Bob Derrenbacker and Leonie Jongenelis, who head up the Pathways School, Theological School and Residential College, respectively. These people, along with many others, have brought fresh ideas and exceptional stewardship to Trinity, and we are very thankful to have them as part of our leadership team.

In 2019, we also had some significant infrastructure projects in train. This included the final phases of Project 100 – our new residential building – and planning for our new second campus for the Pathways School at 611 Elizabeth Street.

We continued to roll out our generous scholarship program, offering scholarships to 176 students across the three divisions of the College. As part of this, we launched a program for deserving young Cambodian students who couldn’t otherwise afford a tertiary education, along with the Trinity Access Program, which, in late 2019, awarded 17 disadvantaged students full scholarships to live at Trinity in 2020.

PATHWAYS SCHOOL We had 1276 students commence our Foundation Studies program in 2019, while another 1227 graduated. Of these graduates, 70 per cent were accepted into the University of Melbourne. We also ran our successful Young Leaders Program in July and December with a full house of students from more than 20 countries.

Our new academic English program (TCAEP) was introduced in October 2019 to assist students who need to improve their English before commencing the Extended or Main intakes of our Foundation Studies program.

RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE In 2019, we had 280 students living in our Residential College and delivered more than 200 tutorials and consultations each week, alongside many cultural and sporting events. Highlights included our students’ production of Urinetown and the Trinity team making the final of the Boroinjin Cup in the inaugural intercollegiate Traditional Aboriginal Games (TAG).

We also finalised the Neave Review, conducted by Adjunct Professor Marcia Neave AO, to take the pulse of our Residential College culture and have since implemented a number of measures as part of a detailed action plan to improve the College culture for our students. This includes increasing the number of forums for consultation with students, including Q&A sessions at Formal Hall, enhancing our expert-led orientation training program, and updating our Student Coordinator position descriptions to emphasise our student leaders’ requirement to commit to diversity, inclusiveness and safety.

THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL Twenty students graduated from our Theological School in 2019, and four students were ordained deacon and six were ordained priest. We rolled out six new units, welcomed four new faculty to our team and hosted three international speakers alongside special lectures and continuing education events.

ALUMNI NETWORK We were pleased to maintain strong connections with our alumni cohort again in 2019 and held 92 events for Trinity alumni. This included events in 16 cities across nine countries. Our online platform My Trinity Connect (mytrinityconnect.com.au) grew throughout the year and now has more than 2300 members.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to the 619 alumni and friends of the College who donated more than $4 million to Trinity in 2019. This support really does make a huge difference to our students.

All of these achievements are only made possible due to the hard work and commitment of our staff, and the enthusiasm and dedication of our students – all of whom are recognised in this report. Trinity College wouldn’t be the place it is without you.

STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr Gayle Allan published a chapter in a new book on the supernatural in Shakespeare: Allan, G. ‘I’ll put a girdle round the earth in forty minutes’: representing the supernatural in film adaptations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Bladen, V. and Brailowsky, Y. ed(s), Shakespeare and the supernatural (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2020).

Mr Campbell Bairstow was appointed as the Trinity College nominee to the Board of Trustees of the S. R. Stoneman Foundation. He was also appointed as an independent member of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Divinity.

Ms Lilly Brown and Mr David Collis published a chapter, “Preparing for the Gift: Two Educator’s Perspectives on Practicing Indigenous-Settler Relations in the Classroom,” in Maddison, S., & Nakata, S. (2019). Questioning Indigenous-settler relations: interdisciplinary perspectives. Springer, pp.125-136.

This book chapter is a published version of the original presentation that Lilly Brown and David Collis gave at the 2017 Trinity College Indigenous Higher Education Conference (IHEC).

The Revd Canon Dr Robert (Bob) Derrenbacker continues in his role as Chair of the Board of the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion (CUAC); he has served in this role since 2014. Bob also continues as Chair of the Endowment Committee of the Canadian Society for Biblical Studies.

In 2019, Bob spoke in a variety of contexts, including as part of a multi-faith panel at an iftar hosted by Deakin University (16 April), and to an ecumenical gathering of clergy in Brisbane on the Gospel of Matthew (16 August). He delivered an academic paper to the Fellowship of Biblical Studies (13 June). Bob also attended the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in San Diego (USA) where he presented a paper at a session jointly sponsored by the Synoptic Gospels and Text Criticism Sections (25 November).

His preaching invitations were extensive throughout the year, and included St Paul’s Cathedral (Melbourne), Christ Church (Brunswick), St John’s (Camberwell), St George’s (Malvern), St John’s (Toorak), St Stephen’s (Weribee), Christ Church Cathedral (Ballarat), St Paul’s Cathedral (Gippsland), St Luke’s (Carrum Downs), St Peter’s (Eastern Hill), Christ Church (Geelong), St John’s (East Malvern), All Saints (Ascot Vale), and St Mary’s (North Melbourne).

In 2019, Bob was appointed an Associate Priest at St Paul’s Cathedral (Melbourne). He was also elected as Clerical Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral (Stall of St Patrick). In addition, Bob was elected a member of the Fellowship of Biblical Studies. He continues with his professional memberships in the Society of Biblical

Literature, Canadian Society for Biblical Studies, and the Catholic Biblical Association of America.

Professor Ken Hinchcliff continues as Co-Editor-inChief of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, member of the Zoological Parks and Gardens Board and Chair of its Scientific Advisory Committee and member of its Development Committee and the Zoo Foundation Advisory Board, member (non-voting) of the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), and member of the Listing Group of the Fédération Equestre International (which advises on drug and medication use in sports horses [Olympics, World Equestrian Games etc]). Ken delivered a small number of lectures in the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences and supervises graduate students from the University of Melbourne and University of Adelaide. He is a member of the Equine Limb Injury Steering Committee of the University of Melbourne and Racing Victoria Ltd. Ken was a member of the Global Veterinary Accreditation team that evaluated the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science. The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences unveiled a portrait of Ken by Archibald Prize-winning artist Yvette Coppersmith at the official opening of its new teaching facilities in Werribee.

The Revd Professor Mark Lindsay was re-elected President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Theological Schools (ANZATS) in July.

In September, he was elected to the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia, which will meet in Maroochydore, from 31 May – 5 June 2020.

Mark won a competitive grant from ARTFInc, for research towards his next book project.

Mark’s publications included: ‘Eschatology’, in M. Mawson & P. Ziegler (eds), The Oxford Handbook of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2019), 257-270; ‘Israel’, in P.D. Jones & P. Nimmo (eds), The Oxford Handbook of Karl Barth, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2019), 325-340; ‘Foreword’, to J. Moses, Anglicanism: Catholic Evangelical or Evangelical Catholic? Essays Ecumenical and Polemical, (Adelaide: ATF Press, 2019).

In December, Mark concluded his service as an associate priest of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and commenced as an associate priest at St. Mary’s North Melbourne.

Ms Emily McAuliffe wrote for three Lonely Planet books and had articles and photography published by a range of media outlets, including BBC News (UK), International Traveller (AU), the Embraer magazine (EU), Modern Adventure (USA), The Telegraph (UK) and Lonely Planet online.

Ms Tamar Lewit’s activities in 2019 included presenting a seminar ‘Pliny’s presses: mistranslations, misunderstandings and mysteries’ at the Centre for Classical Studies Seminar Series, Australian National University; and a seminar ‘The four horsemen of the apocalypse meet Resilience Theory: Bouncing back from “sword, famine, and plague” in late antiquity’, to the Ancient World Seminar series, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, the University of Melbourne.

She also presented lectures and seminars to students at the University of Melbourne, including ‘The archaeology of childhood’, The archaeology of Late Antiquity’, ‘Animals in the Roman Empire from archaeology and zooarchaeology’, and ‘Roman economy and society in the 4th century’.

She published Burton, P. and Lewit, T. 2019 “Pliny’s Presses: the true story of the 1st century wine press” Klio 101.2, 543–598 (8th ranked journal in western Europe in Classics) and her previous publications were cited in international journals Quaternary International, Journal of Late Antiquity, Zephyrus and Journal of Military History, as well as in Archaeology, history and biosciences ed. S. Brather-Walter (2019). Along with her research, Tamar is currently collaborating with an award-winning Australian novelist on a children’s novel set in 4th century Roman Gaul.

Mr Steven Ng passed the Change Management examination in December, and is now a Change Management Practitioner, certified by APMG International and recognised by the Change Management Institute.

Dr Melissa Ong received her PhD in Psychology of Child Development from Putra University Malaysia (UPM) in November. She obtained distinctions in all her coursework subjects to achieve the maximum CGPA of 4.0.

Ms Jia Yi Seow published a paper along with her co-workers from The University of Melbourne on the synthesis and investigation of the properties of novel organic materials for photon upconversion, a light harvesting method that can improve solar energy conversion efficiency and lower the cost of renewable energy generation. She worked on the synthesis of four novel molecules and studied the effect of molecular geometries on the performance of the photon upconversion process.

Rusden (TC 1920); a typed manuscript, order of service, Evensong and Dedication to the Moorhouse Building, 15 Feb 1981; and a couple of 35mm slides depicting the Chapel kneelers, produced by the donor’s father and mother, c. 1976.

Roger Brookes (TC 1951) Four variations of Trinity College neckties, two dating from the 1950s, and two more contemporary variants from the 2000s.

Rosemary Merralls Two boxes of personal papers from the estate of the late James Donald Merralls, relating to his times at college both as a tutor and as Residential Dean.

Renn Wortley One boxes of papers along with an 1970s college pennant, ephemera, and photographic material collected by Renn Wortley, during his time as Senior Law Tutor, 1973-76.

Angus Borland An original framed photographic print, mounted on card, of the 1924 Trinity College Crew, Head of the River, by Sears Studio.

The print belonged to the donor’s father, George Haydon (TC 1920), whose college blazer is already held in Archives.

Sabina Read (TC 1989) An early Trinity College Foundation brochure relating to college fundraising, with a letter from Foundation Executive Director Angela Mackie, dated June 1990.
