Thank you for the invitation to contribute to Keepsake. The name of your yearbook says something I hope is true about your whole Trinity experience: that it will be something you will riot lose as soon as you leave, but keep and treasure for a long time! .

.

Your expedence at Trinity reflects a long tradition, which we have treasured in the College since 1872. For many years this meant being a residential community for the University of Melbourne, but in 1989 Foundation Studies appeared as a new form of an old ideal. Although you have not lived on the Trinity c~mpus, the way Foundation Studies is taught here reflects the - tradition of collegiate education. This means first and foremost that we _are an educational community; teachers .and students · ).. , h are able to get t_o know one anot er, and your problems as \'\'ell as your talents are important to us. I hope this has been your , · · experience while a student at Trinity.

....

Entering the University of Melbourne, as most of you will·be doing soon, can be an exciting but also an intimidating experi~nce: Classes will be larger, and new teachers and new .. student colleagues will contribute to making life different. As you go forward into this new and important chapter of your own stories, your friends from Trinity can continue to be a support group for you, and may give you a real advantage as you take on new challenges. The fact that you have already _ · experienced the University campus and the Baillieu Library is also something that I hope you will find helpful in the years ahead . -~ -

• ·

Even when you have gradu ated from University, this book still be a reminder for you of your experiences. If f.Ol:J.are reading this again some years from now I hope It bti~ ·-.-· t g ood memories!

Well, dear students, when you commenced with us at the start of this year, I didn't.know I would be saying goodbye at the same time as you. As it happens YOU will be giving me my final impressions of Trinity College Foundation Studies, so let me tell you what I have seen in you. I have seen you leaning over books, as you study and work through challenging problems. I have seen you also laugh hard as you have had a joke with your friends. You have shared food with one another and ideas with one another and probably sorn.e secrets with one another. But .what I love most about sharing this journey with you is how you encourage o_ne another. Whether it is by quietly sharing your knowledge as ¥Ou study together or by screaming and clapping your approval when your fellow students stand up to perform, the image of your generous encouragement of one another is an image I will carry with me always and tell others, as an example of how to live well.

.

.

Well done lovelies! It has been a great year, and I wish you much joy - with occasional surprises - as your educational journey takes you on beyond our doors . Know that you will always be remembered - and always welcome. ~

.

I_..,.

We are part of your story now, and you are part of ours. . There's only one more thing to say....remember to breathe! ·

_Itseems like just yesterday we welcomed you at Orientation. How time flies and it's now almost the end of 2009...

This year has seen the revival_of the Yearbook since 2005. The journey in putting toge~er r Keepsake has been amazllig. We see a gi:oup led by four capable young talents - · . Delima, Grace, Kar Hao and Ping Chien; toge_ther with the help of the sub-committee · ; •.,_; Faith, Amber / Phaik Yie, Shaeg-an,Shereen and Yogi came up with such tremendous enthusiasm followed by amazing achievements - including capturing the essence of memories by dedicated photographers to excellent graphics and layout designs. Not forgetting the Movie Marathons and Wristband sales that they have organized as part of the Keepsakeproject.

"" ~ j ~~- '.,As proven in your mission statement, "With the right attitude, this Yearbook will reach ;; · ·: · ·· a high altitude", that without the organization, hard work and dedication, there would ·' not have been a Keepsake for the Feoruary Main 2009 Program. :ro the Yearbook Committee and its subcommittee, 'Thank You and Congratulations!' Our deepest thanks and gratitude to Cindy, Kelly and Su Li who were extremely patient with us and constantly giving us help during the productipn of this yearbook. We would like to add that you guys work way too hard.

Also, to the Yearbook Subc ommittee: ·We could not have done. it without you. Seriously. And finally, to the students ofTCF~ '09, thank yqu for supporting the Yearbook Committee and we hope that we have managed to capture a part of your life that defined who you are in many ways. ,It has been a year in our lives that we are most likely to remember forever. The coming of age for many of us and being away from our f~milies have . molded us into braver, more independent people ready to take on the world. May all the good times here at Trinity be your.;c9mpanion throughout this rocky life and let the bad ones be yo~ source of strength.

Hold on to these treasured memories and live them again when you tell your grandchildren .what you were like as a teenager. Tell them how you neve11 finished your homework till the very last second and how you did everything your parents told you not to.

Don't forget: The ·universe will unf?l ·as:it ~hou).d~ l

The Yearbook Committee wishes you a safe ho1i-~ back home, a Merry Christmas and Happy_ ei Year. '

Salutations dear Trinitians, We've come a long way since the beginning of 2009. It has been a tough and fruitful year (hopefully for most of you). We here have been slave-driven and drained of every last drop of brain juice; to have shared that experience with you has been, with no mockery at all, a great honour. With p i;.ide in our hearts, we are pleased to present you this ke~psake which we hope will keep the ' 'memories of your time at Trinity College alive throughou f the course of your life. We also hope that the awesomeness of this · keepsake will be the symbol of the spring of your youth. Amongst all the meaningless · drivel that surrounds us in the current times, we hope th at despite all this, our fellow students will see the light and 'live long and prosper'. _ ...

Back there, the brawny, fiery eye watching me relented: the muscles of my face and throat relaxed; that is not to say I felt at home: it was like the embrace of someone whose mind is elsewhere .

b-yMI CHAEL HEALD (Lit. Lecturer & Subject Leader)

It started off on the 8th of July, The thought of leaving you made me cry. Making you wait for my return, It's as good as breaking your heart. Don't close the curtain on me As I'll return with a great big hug. ClJRh up in my arms, you know wliat I mean. Commitment is a must for us to be strong. Understanding will bloom and follow us along, Respecting ea& other, this is how we bond. Love is in my heart, even while I'm

Muinted his eyes 1;1llderthe brightness of the glaring ~un, and .~a~ his lrds the war zone. His comrades looked cold and menacmg as they tnarched ·en .;, ... __ss~ into the zone, prepared to receive the glory of victory - even if it would cost { •;Verv life. ... -J

His fingers were numb from waiting to detonate the bomb. As the sounds of~ · ,,,..,,,,._ and shouting whirled in a cacophony around him, insidious fear crept slowly mto him. ..i:c He felt like lie had been waiting for an eternity, when the truth was that it had only been twenty minutes since the last skirmish erupted. He held the lives of his comrades literally in his hands, as his role was to detonate the bomb that would blow up the enemies' escape back into the dense jungle.

But thesignalhadstill not come. All around him, the strangled cries of men forced themselves into his unwilling consciousness. He wondered now long it would be before it all finally died down. But it was unlikely that he would see that end; he knew that the war had only just started. As he thought about all that he had had to leave behind to defend his country, hot tears rolled down his cheeks. He remembered the warm and loving face of his mother and those halcyon days that were now so far away as he ploughed deeper into the smoke and death that was undeniably war. When he had gone home one day from his usual outing with his fellow friends at the village, full of resolution and pumped with what seemed to b~ an overflowing enthusiasm to join the war, as if he was an aficionado of war, his mother was stunned. After all, he was only fourteen, an age when the hoi polloi were still exploring the hills and caves behind the village. He himself knows that fie is not ready, or even ofd enough to join in the war. But he was adamant. . • ·He had gone to listen to the stirring speech by the war recruitment officer, who had . won over tlie hearts of the young men and boys with his speech about the valour of · men and the honour of being in a war. Coming from a single-parent family, this could ·:::~not prove him to be .any less exciting. ' . · -"·. ·

Nothing was going to stand between him and his maturity into _a real man; not even the ~ought of leaving his sickly mother behind. . · . :.

_ The da:yhe left the village, his mother passed him apo~ch of jasmiJle; her favou,i flower. She said it will be a h~cky ch~ to .protect ~.in w~tever he _d<>e$,af!.·_~ · a symbol of h~r. He had felt a pang of fear and·~gret, _sudderil t he did not really know what he was getting himself info. Ma - · · · ~ with, he thought. Maybe he should have just stayed ..,......,..,,..,=· ~ of fear building inside him, but he was determined to_jc; · ·

··:_.fne memories of the time he had spent with his mother went rushing to hismind crna -· keet replaying, as if they were on pfayback, and circled around his mind like a never,- · eniling carousel. · His mother had always been a distingue from the other villagers, as she was always pale and sicklf. Nonethe~ess, she always spare~ the ti~e ~oaccompany her son to play 1n the flower fields, making wreaths and spending their time together. Deep down, s'lie knew she does not have much time left. Yet even now, he found himself having to maintain a stoical front, as the war had n0ne of the romance that he had thought it entailed. There was nothing even remotely resembling the beauty of camaraderie, the fun and enjoyable time that can be shared with the fellow comrades, singing the songs around the campfire, and the triumph of the human spirit of even the mere glory of victory. It was all a mere split fantasy, as he could only wish for them to happen. The war had only been an extended experience of brutality, fear, death and fatigue. It was too late for him to turn back now, wnat is done is done, and cannot be changed. There is no point in having regrets about something that had happened in the past, even if he wished that he should not have left his mother alone. The enemies pressed on to capture the town, many comrades were dropping like flies. Gunshots were fired, as he stared at his comrades lying down on the ground, fresh blood oozing out of their bullet wounds. The injured comrades squirmed in desperation, and were pathetically .&aseing for air, trying to stay alive, but to no avail. One D); one, they even, tually gave tlieir last breath, lying down 1h a pool _of crimson. n e wondered why the signal had still not come. Takin$ the risk to peer out bf his reim:-. · •"'fo..rcea position, he looked for the captain who was to give the signal. -~·iA sharp intake of breath froze him.

• \i ·~ unlike most of you, I'm not going to university; not till two years later that'is ·. -. . · Instead, I'm going to play soccer with my army mates in the.jungle artd study ·:·:- ways to defend my country. Yes!We Singaporeanmen are passionate in protecting · • • our country. However, the painful part of this is not the strenuovs physical workout or the thought of playing with firearms; but instead, having to say goodbye to the friends that I have gotten to know here.

Graduating from Trinity College, I have found many wonderful friends; friends who genuinely care for me and are always there to listen to my plights, friends who would study with me till 3am in the morning and amazingly, even friends who would go out of their way just to be there beside me when I need them. Thus, it pains me to say goodbye to them but I know one fact, which is that the friendship bridged between my friends and I is not dependent on the number of phone calls,Facebook wall posts or text messages. It is the clear understandingthat we love and care for each other, and this is what helps the . streaming tears subside when we say goodbye . Having written this, I decided to Google the word "friend" and stumbled upon this poem about friendship written ten by Emma Guest.
