PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This year has been one of celebration for Trinity University as we mark 150 years since our founding. In 1869, when a group of pioneering Presbyterian ministers sought to establish “a University of the highest order,” they also pledged to think beyond the traditional lecture to train students in body, mind, and spirit.

With this as its undercurrent, it is not hard to see how Trinity survived two world wars, three moves, and countless other economic and political challenges— the resilience of the Trinity family has long stood the test of time. For 150 years, Trinity University has been a force in motion. Educators, inventors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, architects, and developers—all armed with a Trinity education—have demonstrated an unwavering resilience and drive toward transforming the world around them.

The more interesting question, perhaps, is why. Why has Trinity University continued to shine as a beacon for higher education? Why have faculty, staff, students, and alumni continually given and sacrificed to see this school succeed?

One of my favorite jobs as Trinity’s president is listening to the stories and journeys of alumni across the world. Alumni from the 1940s and ’50s share memories of packing up the Woodlawn campus and moving across town to their new home overlooking the San Antonio skyline. Alumni from the ’60s and ’70s remember political and economic influences on Trinity’s policies and position in the state and the nation. Those from the ’80s and ’90s share stories of transformation and change, sometimes with uneasiness or uncertainty, but always with hope for the future. And recent graduates often share stories of diversity and discovery that allowed them to gain new cultural and creative insights.

These stories are the crux of the “why.”

They showcase the spirit of Trinity and are the backbone of this magazine issue, used to build the University’s “150 Memories” project.

In sharing such stories, we define Trinity’s strength and stability in an ever-unstable world. We bear witness to the ways the

liberal arts enhance our momentum through critical thinking and creative problem solving. We bring shape and form to the values that define and bind the Trinity community.

I want to thank the alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and friends who continue to share these stories with me and with the University. Together, we tell the tale of Trinity, to accelerate what’s next. We are a force in motion.

Stepping out of Northrup Hall on the evening of Feb. 1, 2019, I couldn’t

quite believe my eyes.

While at least 500 of my colleagues and friends had dedicated their afternoon to serving our community, I was in my office, finalizing last-minute details: texting Vanessa, one of our photographers, when the mayor was scheduled to arrive; texting Ana, our other photographer, about getting photos from the afternoon on our live photo stream; testing that live photo stream link over and over because there’s nothing like a live event to make technology go haywire.

Yet while the hustle and bustle of the office was all-consuming, I was blithely unaware of the hustle and bustle happening just a few feet away. So, perhaps it wasn’t too surprising that when I stepped out of Northrup Hall that evening, I couldn’t quite believe my eyes.

Trinity’s campus had been entirely transformed. Colorful lights danced through the canopy of live oaks. Miller Fountain sparkled with iridescent baubles. A bright, cacophonous carnival occupied the Chapel parking lot, and food trucks dotted the sidewalks offering pretzels, funnel cakes, and—yes, Fiesta lovers—chicken on a stick.

A petting zoo was nestled between face painting and a beer garden… … and it was there, a few hours later, that I clinked mugs with a fellow alumna, gazing upward to the sky. With fireworks launching into the air and a live band playing in the background, she turned to me and said, “Wow, this really doesn’t feel like the Trinity I know at all.”

A lot of us might feel this way, especially as we look back together on 150 years of our history. Our academic profile is getting stronger by the minute. We are putting up new buildings, designing new majors, acquiring new property, and living in new apartments across the street. For the Class of 2019 and beyond, this is their Trinity—but after my friend’s brief comment, I couldn’t help but wonder: Is it ours?

If working here for the past seven years has taught me anything, it’s that this answer, more loudly than ever, is a resounding “Yes!” We all have different versions of the Trinity we know and love, but the threads that tie us together have remained strong and steadfast for a century and a half. We may have called Mabee Dining Hall “the Refectory,” or worked on projects in the windowless basement of Moody Engineering instead of the sunlit labs of CSI. But for 150 years, we have valued hands-on education, creative and cutting-edge innovation, and a commitment to our community.

So as we stood there, still looking at the sky together, I smiled to myself in thought. Maybe it’s ok that this didn’t feel like the Trinity I know. Because the one I’m getting to know, the one I’m a part of showing to the world, is the Trinity I want to be a part of—now, and for generations to come.

Serving the community where we live is an essential strand in the DNA of Trinity’s unique history, and community engagement was the centerpiece of Trinity’s 150th Anniversary kick-off celebration. On Feb. 1, 2019, more than 500 students, faculty, staff, and alumni marked the launch of Trinity’s yearlong celebration by volunteering at nonprofit organizations around the city. Various Trinity alumni chapters throughout the country also organized volunteer efforts in their own communities as well.

The day began with a pep rally and inspirational remarks by Goodwill San Antonio CEO Kevin Bergner ’79 who encouraged Tigers to embrace Trinity’s tradition of thinking deeply and acting meaningfully.

From there, hundreds of volunteers fanned out across the city to perform acts of service, from assembling food boxes at the San Antonio Food Bank to clearing brush at McAllister Park. In one day, Trinity Tigers provided 13 community agencies with more than 1,500 hours of service.

That evening, the Trinity campus was transformed for a celebration with food and drink, carnival rides, a beer garden, a petting zoo, and live music. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Trinity neighbors were on hand as San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg ’99 officiated the start of Trinity’s sesquicentennial celebration. A spectacular fireworks show capped off the evening shooting into the sky over Northrup Hall.

Trinity Bolsters Academic Support Resources and services align to Starting Strong QEP With the Starting Strong Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Trinity aims to improve first-year student success over the next five years. The University opened the Quantitative Reasoning and Skills (QRS) Center, which aims to improve student performance in quantitatively-demanding classes by offering peer tutoring, workshops, and other services. The QRS is directed by Luke Tunstall.

Lapétra Bowman, advising coordinator, is bolstering support in advising. As a part of Academic Affairs, Bowman is tackling advising through both student and faculty lenses, with an emphasis on advising for first-year students.

Money Matters University receives $1 million gift for financial literacy initaitves Trinity has received a $1 million gift from The Financial Literacy of South Texas Foundation and its trustees, who seek to promote financial education and well-being of the South Texas community. This gift will create a permanent endowment fund. “This investment in our students and programs is vital to the success of our goals in educating the ‘whole student,’” Trinity President Danny Anderson says.

Funds will be used by faculty members in Trinity’s School of Business to support programs or courses aimed at improving financial literacy and personal financial capability, such as those offered through the University’s Financial Literacy Collective or the current personal finance course.

Revolutionary School Design Walton Family Foundation supports Department of Education with $5 million grant

Tough to Admit Admissions profile breaks University records

A $5 million grant from the Walton Family Foundation will fund the Trinity School Design Network, a school incubator and principal fellowship program in the greater San Antonio region to launch later this year. The Network will allow more than 40 educators and entrepreneurs to open innovative and high-quality traditional district, autonomous district, and charter schools in the San Antonio region over the next five years. This grant follows on the heels of the planning grant that Trinity received from the Walton Family Foundation in 2018. Trinity and City Education Partners will co-market and co-brand the new school incubator.

Trinity launched its first-ever Gallup Employee Engagement Survey in November 2018. The initiative marks a first step in an ongoing effort to solidify and strengthen Trinity’s workplace culture. Results obtained in spring 2019 showed that faculty and staff are proud to work at Trinity University, and find meaning and purpose in their work, but want the University to improve in two areas: rewarding and recognizing hard work and dedication, and identifying opportunities for growth. “The executive leadership team is setting smart, measurable goals for improvement in these areas,” says Tess CoodyAnders ’93, vice president for Strategic Communications and Marketing.

Trinity University has established unprecedented momentum in elevating the academic profile and increasing the diversity of its incoming classes. Since the 2013-14 admissions cycle, (marked by the launch of the Trinity Tomorrow strategic plan) applications to Trinity have almost doubled: from 5,502 applications to 9,850 in 2018-19. The University’s acceptance rate has dropped to a record-low 29 percent from 64 percent over that same period.

This momentum has also accelerated the University’s goals for a more inclusive campus. The Class of 2023—661 first-year students—includes 42 percent from underrepresented backgrounds, including 22 percent who identify as Hispanic or Latino/a. At the same time, average SAT and ACT scores and high school GPAs have all increased, showcasing the University’s dedication to quality applicants.

The Future is Fulbright Jenny Browne will teach at Queen’s University Belfast

¡Salud! to Support and Service Jen Mathews honored for teaching and advising

English professor Jenny Browne was named a Fulbright Scholar. In January 2020 she will travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland, on a six-month Fulbright Commission scholarship to teach at Queen’s University Belfast.

Additionally, she will write, lecture, and deliver public readings of her poetry at the University’s prestigious Seamus Heaney Center. Browne—whose place-based poetry has earned her accolades as the 2016 poet laureate of San Antonio and 2017-18 poet laureate of Texas—will also spend her time abroad working on her fifth poetry collection, Until the Sea Once More Closes Over Us.

Jennifer P. Mathews, professor and

chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was named the 2019 recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship, the most prestigious faculty award the University bestows.

The award was announced in May during Trinity’s undergraduate commencement.

Mathews has taught at Trinity since 1999.

Her research follows the extraction of edible commodities across the Yucatán peninsula, and she also integrates a service project every semester in her classes to raise money for a cause related to the class itself.

Pulling Rank Admissions profile and alumni participation help Trinity rise in the rankings This year, Trinity has received national

accolades from multiple sources. The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education named Trinity the No. 37 liberal arts institution and No. 100 college in the nation, based on indicators such as job prospects postgraduation, the resources provided at the institution, and the diversity of the campus community. Money.com ranked Trinity the No. 2 college in the nation for “best colleges for merit aid,” and College Consensus named Trinity the No. 61 university in the nation.

Distinguished Achievement Faculty and staff honored with prestigious University awards In May, five members of Trinity’s faculty were honored with distinguished awards: • Rosa Aloisi, political science, for distinguished teaching and research • Jason Johnson, history, for distinguished teaching and research • Adam Urbach, chemistry, for distinguished scholarship, research, or creative work

• Rita Urquijo-Ruiz, modern languages and literatures, for distinguished University, community, and professional service.

• Rocio Delgado, education, for distinguished advising

The President’s Award for Excellence in Student Advocacy was presented to James Bynum, communication, and Wilson Terrell Jr., engineering science. The award recognizes Trinity employees who have been significant partners in supporting student success.

Trinity University was also recognized by College Consensus as a top-50 alumni network for 2019. Finishing at No. 33, Trinity and its almost-30,000 alumni are accompanied by institutions such as Princeton University, University of Chicago, and Carnegie Mellon in College Consensus’ ranking of alumni networks.

This ranking of alumni networks is designed to help prospective students recognize the value of a strong alumni network—not only for their college career, but well beyond graduation as well. “Through the work of our incredibly loyal alumni volunteer base, our sagacious alumni board members, and our passionately committed staff, the Trinity network is strong,” says Ryan Finnelly, senior director for Alumni Relations.

Breaking from the Pack Proactive students show spring break can mean more than sun and surf This spring break saw 28 Trinity students travel to three different cities as part

of the University’s Tiger Breaks program. The program is hosted by the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Success and is designed for students to serve communities, engage with alumni, and explore the culture of a new city.

In celebration of Trinity’s 150th Anniversary and with the financial support of President Danny Anderson, all three trips were free to students this year.

Oklahoma City

In Oklahoma City, students addressed issues of poverty and homelessness. Students also met with Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame author Rilla Askew, who explained Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Riots.

New Orleans

In New Orleans, students promoted environmental justice. They tended a community garden that provides fresh produce for an area of low food accessibility; planted trees in Woodlands Conservatory; petitioned against a pipeline; and made signs for protesters involved in a grassroots movement.

El Paso

Back in Texas, students volunteered for four days to help support migrants in El Paso. Approximately 100 new people arrived at the shelter every day, and students’ roles shifted to adapt to daily demands.

Students also volunteered at the El Paso Food Bank community farm.

Body of Work Carolyn Becker honored for research and mentorship Carolyn Becker has

been appointed a Murchison Term Professor and will receive an additional $20,000 annually to support her research activities. Becker, professor of psychology and a clinical psychologist, has a 20-year history of teaching and service at Trinity. She is a dedicated educator, internationally known for her research on body image interventions, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Around campus and at conferences, Becker became a household name after introducing Trinity to The Body Project—an eating disorder intervention program which has been administered to 3.5 million young women and girls worldwide.

Educational Leadership Department of Education finds new chair and director Oscar JiménezCastellanos has

been appointed chair of the Department of Education and Murchison Endowed Professor of Education at Trinity University.

He will also serve as executive director of the Center for Educational Leadership.

Previously, Jiménez-Castellanos was an associate professor and director of educational leadership as well as founding director of the Latinx education research center at Santa Clara University. He is a distinguished scholar, having published more than 50 research articles or book chapters in leading journals.

returned to campus in February as the University’s new chaplain. He received a bachelor’s degree in urban studies with a minor in economics in 2008, as well as a master’s degree in teaching in 2009. He also holds a master’s degree of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and is an ordained minister of word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). SernaWallender succeeds the Rev. Stephen Nickle, who retired after 18 years at the University.

Young Entrepreneurs Dazzle at Stumberg Teams use Summer Accelerator to advance startup ideas The Stumberg Venture Competition, now in its fifth year—with $215,000 in seed

money handed out and 21 startups founded—selected a new slate of budding companies at its 2019 preliminaries in March. Each of these promising startups impressed the judges enough to earn $5,000 in seed money and a spot in Trinity’s Summer Accelerator program, which comes with summer housing and funding to pay startup employees $10 per hour for up to 10, 40-hour work weeks, as well as guided instruction and networking opportunities. These new startups also progress onto the Stumberg finals in the fall, with one $25,000 grand prize at stake.

campus in April as the University’s new Title IX coordinator.

She is the first designated Title IX coordinator for the University. Miranda-Clark’s focus is to ensure that everyone on campus has access to her services and is comfortable going to her for such issues as sexual misconduct, discrimination, and harassment. She received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy with minors in history and Spanish in 1989, and she received a juris doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin.

Skate Cuff is a lock that allows users to secure their electronic vehicles (such as scooters, skateboards, and even small skates) to bike racks, poles, and other available objects. The company hopes to eventually offer other products such as lights and external batteries and also plans to one day release its own models of electric vehicles.

La Escuela de Estella encourages mariachi students to continue their careers as musicians and strengthen the mariachi culture and community in Southwest ISD. The company plans to provide affordable group and private lessons, form a community mariachi band, and establish a strong network of musicians and paid teacher positions.

The StorySpread software gives users an ability to create and monetize digital stories and comics, regardless of their drawing ability. Users can create avatars, create their own scenes and backgrounds, and eventually receive ad revenue if their work receives a certain amount of traffic.

ProjecTech aims to improve safety for motorcyclists and bicyclists by increasing cyclists’ visibility to other motorists with a flashing augmented turn signal to increase visibility during morning, dusk, or nighttime rides.

Trinity University Receives $5 Million to Maximize Student Success and Access Anonymous donor establishes endowment for student accessibility services Trinity takes pride in recognizing that

each student brings diverse strengths and abilities to the Trinity community.

With a $5 million contribution from an anonymous donor, the University is one step closer to ensuring that all students receive equitable access to accessible resources.

The gift will establish a $4.5 million Student Accessibility Services Endowment, which will allow Trinity to increase staff, implement more programs, provide students with the latest assistive technology, engage in professional development, and increase campus collaboration. The balance of $500,000 is available immediately to provide for initial software and equipment purchases and fund the program’s new initiatives while the endowment matures.

“Trinity University is excited, humbled, and honored that we may have an opportunity to become a national leader in student accessibility,” says Betty Curry, director for Academic Support. “We welcome the chance to be able to meet each student’s needs more completely to ensure their success at Trinity and in their professional lives as alumni.”

With this grant, Trinity will equip students to be their own advocates and create University-wide understanding about the challenges students face while providing the equipment and training to support this deeply purposeful work.

With Flying Colors Inclusive commencement ceremonies mark milestones

CSI: Rooftop Sustainability secures award for this campus landmark

In the weeks leading up to Spring 2019 Commencement, Trinity recognized more than 130 students in various communities on camps. Forty-seven students from the Latina/o community were honored in the second-annual De Colores ceremony, while 17 Black seniors were recognized in the Kente ceremony, now in its fourth year. Trinity also introduced two new events this year: the Lavender ceremony, which recognized 15 graduating members of the LGBTQ+ community, and the Trinity Recognition for International Engagement ceremony, which honored 57 undergraduates who either were international students or studied abroad during their time at the University.

The green roof of Trinity’s Center for the Sciences and Innovation (CSI) won an SA Tomorrow Sustainability Award from the City of San Antonio’s Office of Sustainability.

CSI’s green roof project was recognized for its holistic building design, as well as meeting the objectives of sustainability that are at the forefront of combating global warming. As well as being a leader in stormwater collection best practices, the CSI green roof is a gathering place on campus, an outdoor classroom, a sustainable design demonstration garden, and an urban wildlife habitat.

Gold Standard Trinity’s 23rd Goldwater Scholar plans to conduct translational research Eleanor Davis ’20 was

named a Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, a prestigious program for students intending to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering science. Davis plans to conduct translational, or “bench-to-bedside,” research, which takes useful data from clinical trials and other medical research and translates it into useable techniques for improving health outcomes.

Accreditation Reaffirmed SACS confirms Trinity’s accreditation for an additional 10 years The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaffirmed accreditation of Trinity University for an additional 10 years, a successful outcome to the process of evaluation that began following the last reaffirmation process in 2008. Accreditation validates that Trinity’s quality of education and facilities meets nearly 100 standards set by SACSCOC in coordination with the U.S. Department of Education and ensures Trinity is eligible to receive federal and state funding to support student financial aid and to transfer academic credits with other institutions. Trinity has been continuously accredited by SACSCOC since 1946.

Trinity Launches Gobal Latinx Studies Major, Architectural Studies Minor Interdisciplinary programs will be offered to students starting Fall 2019 In May 2019, Trinity approved the creation of two programs of

study that will strengthen and celebrate the University’s ties to the community. Beginning in the fall semester, Trinity will offer a major in global Latinx studies, an interdisciplinary program that explores the Latinx experience from past to present; and a minor in architectural studies that will draw from elements of art, art history, and urban studies.

Global Latinx Studies

The global Latinx studies major will build on the foundation of Trinity’s already thriving Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS) program, and will be housed in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

This course of study is comprised of an interdisciplinary analysis of the Latinx experience from past to present. It includes modern languages and spans the humanities, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. This program will be accessible and welcoming both to bilingual students and those who may not speak Spanish.

Additionally, Trinity students will have access to a wide range of internships and a world of arts, music, and cultural experiences right here in the Alamo City. And beyond San Antonio, international experiences with programs in Mexico, Central America, Cuba, and Spain await.

Architectural Studies

Trinity’s strengths in architectural history, studio art, urban studies, and engineering have always made it an ideal place to study architecture. Now, through the minor in architectural studies, Trinity students can explore elements of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and architectural history.

Kathryn O’Rourke, art history professor and director for the minor, says the program will work in concert with several other departments. “We’re lucky to have such strong offerings in architecture, art, and urban studies, along with engineering,” O’Rourke says. “That’s so unusual for a small, liberal arts university.”

“We have a great opportunity in our hands for students to learn about the Latinx community, not just in the classroom, but out in the city itself.”

Spanish professor Rita Urquijo-Ruiz says this new major is an ideal move for a university located in the heart of San Antonio. “Trinity is located very strategically, in terms of geography. We are part of the San Antonio community, a city that is close to Mexico and is a gateway to Latin America,” Urquijo-Ruiz says. “And because this is a majority-Latinx community, we have a great opportunity in our hands for students to learn about this community, not just in the classroom, but out in the city itself.”

The major will connect San Antonio to Trinity through events. MAS faculty will continue to lead conversations through the Álvarez Seminar and Latinx Heritage Month in partnership with Trinity’s Diversity and Inclusion Office.

And not many small, liberal arts universities are designated as a national historic district for their architecture, or have strong ties to a generational architect such as O’Neil Ford, as Trinity does.

O’Rourke is advising students that the minor can help prepare them to study architecture in graduate school, but regardless of career path or academic interest, the minor will connect Trinity students to the San Antonio community at a pivotal moment in history. “There’s so much happening in San Antonio right now with growth and urban planning,” O’Rourke says. “We’re looking forward to getting our students out into the community. To have a minor like this at Trinity, it just makes so much sense.”

Featuring stories from across disciplines and hundreds of archival photographs, the commemorative book reminds readers of the inspiring and rather unlikely story of Trinity University. The book calls to memory the University’s early roots in Tehuacana and paves the way for changes to come as Trinity’s creative vision takes shape.

“I love that the book is structured around Trinity’s values—discovery, excellence, impact, individual, and community—rather than a timeline,” says Jacob Tingle ’95, director of Experiential Learning and co-chair of the 150th anniversary steering committee. “Placing historic images alongside photos of current students paints a clear picture of how the campus has evolved.”

Academic Affairs, Admissions, Alumni Relations and Development, Athletics, the executive leadership team, Strategic Communications and Marketing, and the library’s Special Collections and Archives all contributed to the final product, as did external readers with knowledge of Trinity and San Antonio.

BAKER DUNCAN Trinity University Trustee Emeritus, San Antonio businessman, and philanthropist Baker Duncan passed away on Jan. 16, 2019, at the age of 91. His wife, Sally Witt Duncan, passed away on Jan. 24, 2019.

Duncan served on the Trinity University Board of Trustees from 1976-2000, and in 1997 the A. Baker Duncan Scholarship Fund in the Arts was established to provide scholarship assistance to undergraduate students enrolled in the arts. Additionally, a $1 million principal gift came from the Brown Foundation in honor of Duncan.

In 1978 he founded the Duncan-Smith Company, San Antonio’s oldest investment banking firm. He was also a staunch advocate of education, having served as headmaster from 1962-70 for Woodberry Forest School, chairman of the Chancellor’s Council for the University of Texas System in 1982, and chairman of the Academic Committee for the University of Texas Centennial Commission in 1993.

FLORA C. CRICHTON Flora Cameron Crichton, Trustee Emerita and generous Trinity benefactor, died on March 2, 2019. The prominent San Antonio philanthropist, civic and business leader, and national Republican volunteer was 94.

Crichton actively served on Trinity’s Board of Trustees for nearly 40 years (1965-2004). Elected chairman in 1976, she was the first woman to chair the University’s governing board. In 1999, Crichton received the University’s highest award, the Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to her contributions of leadership and service to Trinity, Crichton was a generous donor to the University. Her family’s estate helped endow the Everett H. Jones Chair of Campus Ministry, held by Trinity’s chaplain. Her support also benefited undergraduate students in the form of scholarships and augmented resources for Coates Library. Most significantly, she endowed the Flora Cameron Lecture in Politics and Public Affairs.

We also remember these beloved community members and thank their family and friends for their support and service to Trinity.

BILL SPINKS Cary William “Bill” Spinks, faculty emeritus in the Department of English, died June 22, 2019. He was 76.

Spinks, a leading semiotician, whose career included years of research in the study of signs and symbols embedded in literature and human communication, taught at Trinity for 34 years. His course in science fiction writing was one of the first in the country taught at the university level.

After more than three decades of teaching and research, Spinks retired from Trinity in 2004. In retirement, he founded the Raven’s Mud Project to recycle and refurbish computers for people in need.

Spinks was an active member of University Presbyterian Church. Additionally, he mentored young children at Beacon Hill Elementary School. Passionate about equality and social justice, Spinks supported numerous organizations focused on helping people, animals, and the environment.

Men’s soccer made its 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and the 22nd overall. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the sixth time in seven years. Earlier, Trinity captured its seventh Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in a row.

Cole was awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was elected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 Team for the second straight year. Junior Kristen Canepa was tabbed for the United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com All-America First Teams.

The SCAC named Cole the Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive time. Canepa was selected as Defensive Player of the Year, and first-year Alex Walsh earned Newcomer of the Year accolades.

The week before nationals, Trinity’s women placed fourth at the NCAA South/ Southeast Region Championships, while the Tiger men came in seventh. The Tiger teams swept the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships for the second consecutive year. McCullough emerged as the champion and was named SCAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year. She also won the SCAC Elite 19 award, presented to a student-athlete for academic and athletic success. Blake won the men’s title and was named SCAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Fifth-year head coach Emily Daum ’05 was elected the SCAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second consecutive time.

The Tiger squads were also designated as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Teams.

Head coach Julie Jenkins completed her 34th season at the helm of Tiger volleyball, which finished the season with a 25-7 overall record and a No. 17 ranking by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Trinity posted a 15-1 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and shared the SCAC regular-season title.

The Tigers took third place at the SCAC Championship and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, marking the 24th occasion Trinity competed in the postseason event.

Senior Madeline McKay was elected to the AVCA All-America Third Team, while junior Katrina Lieberman made the Honorable Mention Team.

Guided by fifth-year head coach Jerheme Urban ’03, the Tigers finished the 2018 season in style by winning their final four games. Included in the victories was a win over ninth-ranked and Southern Athletic Association (SAA) champion Berry College.

Trinity recorded a 7-3 overall season record and placed third in the SAA with a 6-2 mark.

Senior lineman Joel Holmes was elected to the All-SAA First Team Offense and was selected for the D3football.com Preseason All-America Third Team. Junior defensive back Nic Hover was tabbed for the All-SAA First Team Defense. Top of the Hill Voice of the Tigers James Hill sets retirement for end of this academic year Trinity magazine sends best wishes to James Hill ’76 who announced his retirement upon conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year.

Hill’s retirement will come at the end of his 25th year serving the University in various roles. As the assistant sports information director, Hill is a regular contributor to Trinity magazine, but he is perhaps best known on campus as the “Voice of the Tigers.” Hill has announced at a variety of notable sporting events such as the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, Big 12 Soccer Championship, and international soccer matches in San Antonio’s Alamodome.

“James is a one-of-a-kind iconic figure at Trinity,” says Justin Parker ’99, sports information director. “It has been an honor and a pleasure working with him for so many years. His love and devotion for Trinity Athletics is unmatched—he definitely ‘bleeds’ maroon and white.”

A native of San Antonio, Hill received a bachelor’s degree from Trinity in 1976 with a major in speech and drama. A lifetime supporter of his alma mater, Hill plans to continue as an announcer on a part-time basis upon retirement.

Swimming & Diving Sophomore Daniel Valmassei earned AllAmerica accolades with a fourth-place finish in men’s 1-meter diving at the NCAA Division III Championships at Greensboro, N.C. Valmassei later placed 16th on the 3-meter board for Honorable Mention All-America recognition. Beau Tipton, also a sophomore, finished 10th in the men’s 200-yard butterfly for Honorable Mention All-America distinction. Sophomore Mabel Fowler became an Honorable Mention AllAmerican with a 15th-place performance in the women’s 200-yard backstroke.

The Tiger women won their 16th consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, held at San Antonio’s Palo Alto College Aquatics Center. The Tiger men finished as runners-up at the SCAC meet.

Second-year head coach Scott Trompeter and his associates were elected the SCAC Women’s Staff of the Year. Trompeter leads the swim teams, while 17th-year coach Stan Randall heads the diving program. Junior Jacob Hurrell-Zitelman earned SCAC Male Swimmer of the Meet honors for the third consecutive year and was also the recipient of the SCAC Elite 19 award. Valmassei was named SCAC Male Diver of the Meet for the second year in a row, and was later tabbed as the SCAC Men’s Diver of the Year for the second straight occasion. First-year Maren Merwarth was selected as SCAC Female Diver of the Meet and the conference Women’s Diver of the Year. Tipton was selected as the SCAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year.

Junior forward Abby Holland was elected to the D3hoops.com All-South Region Second Team and to the All-SCAC First Team. Holland became Trinity’s all-time single-game leading scorer as she poured in 43 points in a home conference game against Schreiner University. She also scored 493 points during the season and reached 1,000 career points. First-year forward/center Hailey Coleman was voted the SCAC Newcomer of the Year.

Rivara brought his career total to 1,000 points, and he also was selected as an All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The Tigers are led by Pat Cunningham, who completed his 20th season as head coach.

Trinity retained possession of the coveted Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Presidents’ Trophy—a 300-pound railroad bell—for the eighth year in a row.

Under the leadership of Bob King, Athletics director, Trinity has now won the Presidents’ Trophy 19 times, the most by any institution in the 57-year history of the award. Trinity also broke its own record for consecutive wins of the trophy.

Tiger teams finished the 2018-19 campaign with 567.5 points, leading second-place Southwestern University by 35 points.

Track & Field Senior Molly McCullough earned AllAmerica honors in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Geneva, Ohio. Senior Abigail Bannon-Schneebeck broke a 12-year Trinity women’s record in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing eighth for All-America accolades.

The Tiger women’s team captured its fifth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, while the men’s squad finished second at the event.

Seventh-year Head Coach Marcus Whitehead and his assistant coaches were elected the SCAC Women’s Staff of the Year for the fifth time in a row. McCullough was tabbed as the SCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, and first-year Sean Majors was named SCAC Men’s Newcomer of the Year.

Majors competed in the NCAA long jump, where he placed 10th, just missing All-America recognition. Senior Blair Walker won the SCAC Men’s Track & Field Elite 19 award, and was selected for the Google Cloud NCAA Division III Academic All-District 8 Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

Men’s Tennis Senior Wilson Lambeth earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America honors in singles and doubles, while junior Jordan Pitts received the distinction in doubles. Lambeth competed in the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament at Kalamazoo, Mich., and advanced to the second round.

Pitts also was a Singles entrant. The Tiger tandem was seeded fourth in the Doubles Championship. Last fall, Lambeth and Pitts won the ITA Southwest Doubles Championship and advanced to the ITA Cup at Rome, Ga. Lambeth was also named the ITA Division III West Region Senior Player of the Year and the Most Improved Senior.

Led by 10th-year head coach Russell McMindes ’02, the Tiger team qualified for its 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament, opening in Claremont, Calif., with a second-round victory over Whitman College. Top-seeded host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges ended the Tigers’ season in the third round.

Matched Up Senior Wilson Lambeth and junior Jordan Pitts captured the Seixas/ Trabert Doubles Flight Championship at the Hall of Fame Intercollegiate Tennis Association Grass Court Invitational in September 2018. The event, exclusive to NCAA Division III teams, was held at the venerable International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The singles and doubles flights were named after legendary tennis players.

Trinity completed the campaign with a 17-10 record and a No. 13 national ranking.

Additionally, the Tigers won their 10th straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and the 24th overall, the most by any sport in SCAC history. McMindes was elected the SCAC Co-Coach of the Year and holds a share of the award for the ninth time in his career. Lambeth was selected as the SCAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year.

Fourth-year assistant coach George Rivers was named the ITA NCAA Division III Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year. The Tigers also earned the ITA West Region Community Service Award.

Women’s Tennis The Tigers advanced to their eighth NCAA Division III Tournament and the 23rd overall, falling to fifth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the second round. Trinity completed the year with a 13-7 record and a No. 18 national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Fifth-year head coach Gretchen Rush ’86 guided the Tigers to their eighth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. Rush was elected SCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Senior Caroline Kutach was selected as the SCAC Player of the Year for the second straight time. First-year Hailey Feuer became Trinity’s first SCAC Newcomer of the Year.

Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen won the ITA Southwest Doubles Championship in the fall,

played at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.

The twin sisters advanced to the ITA Cup Division III Tournament at Rome, Ga.

Baseball Trinity advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 12th occasion. Competing at the regional at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas, the top-seeded Tigers lost to No. 4 Franklin College in the opener.

Trinity bounced back the next day to defeat the second-seeded host Texas Lutheran, but was then eliminated by Franklin. The Tigers finished the campaign with a 35-12 record, and were ranked as high as 15th in the NCAA Division III by Collegiate Baseball.

Senior outfielder Jake Martin was elected to the D3baseball.com All-West Region Second Team, while junior outfielder Rafe Chaumette was tabbed for the Third Team.

Martin was also selected for the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-West Region Second Team, while sophomore pitcher Corey Cater made the All-Region Third Team.

The Tigers completed their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 14-4 mark and secured a share of the regular-season title. Trinity went on to capture its 12th SCAC Championship, defeating Texas Lutheran twice to claim the title. Martin was elected the SCAC Player of the Year, leading a group of 10 Trinity All-Conference players.

Head coach Tim Scannell completed his 21st year as skipper of the Tigers, leading Trinity to its 16th season of at least 30 victories.

Women’s Golf Led by 21st-year head coach Carla Spenkoch, the Tigers finished as runners-up at the SCAC Championships at Blanco, Texas.

First-year golfer Raquel Hill placed fifth and was selected as SCAC Freshman of the Year.

Hill earlier tied for first place at the Schreiner Spring Tournament at Kerrville, Texas. The Tigers won the Lady Bulldog Fall Classic in Seguin, Texas.

Men’s Golf Trinity finished in fifth place at the SCAC Championship. Junior Peyton Bartee completed the event in a three-way tie for second place. His final-round score of 4-under-par 68 tied for the second-best mark in the SCAC’s 54-hole tournament history. Bartee also tied for the lowest third-round score in conference history. Sean Etheredge completed his sixth season as head coach of Trinity’s men’s team.

Softball The Tigers completed the season with a 17-23 overall record and an 11-12 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity was eliminated in the SCAC Tournament by host Centenary College at Shreveport, La. Sophomore utility player Emily Vaclavik was elected to the All-SCAC First Team, leading a group of 10 Tiger players selected for the all-conference squads. Sophomore pitcher Allie Holbrook hurled a no-hitter against Schreiner University, the 15th Tiger player in softball history to accomplish that feat, and the first since 2016.

Brandi Dolsen completed her seventh season as head coach of the Tigers.

Track Record Molly McCullough Named SCAC Woman of the Year Trinity cross country and track & field All-American Molly

McCullough ’19 was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Woman of the Year.

McCullough was also nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, to be announced in October. The SCAC and NCAA Woman of the Year accolades honor graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service, and leadership.

The Portland, Ore., natve earned a bachelor’s degree from Trinity in engineering science. She was presented the 2019 Trinity Engineering Science Department Senior Academic Excellence Award and the Professional Promise Award.

In November 2018, McCullough captured the conference cross country championship and was tabbed as the SCAC Cross Country Runner of the Year. She made Trinity history at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships with her 21st-place finish, becoming the University’s first back-to-back cross country AllAmerican. McCullough became an All-American at the 2017 national meet with a 38th-place finish.

At the 2019 SCAC Track & Field Championships, McCullough won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the fourth year in a row and became the only person in conference history to “four-peat” the event. McCullough later earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a fourthplace finish in the steeplechase.

McCullough became the seventh Trinity student-athlete to garner the SCAC Woman of the Year Award. The most recent was her track & field teammate, Britney Sullivan ’18, who received the award in 2018.

1. Founders’ Day Trinity University was founded in Tehuacana, Texas, on April 20, 1869, a date that would come to be known over the next century as Founders’ Day.

2. Presbyterian Roots “Build a Cumberland university on these hills,” the limestone read in bold letters. Or so folklore has it: In 1848 in Tehuacana, Texas, a Cumberland Presbyterian missionary opined about the site being perfect for a liberal arts institution. 5. O’Neil Ford’s Legacy a mid-century, modern masterpiece From Murchison Tower to the Student Union, O’Neil Ford left a lasting legacy on the University.

Pioneering the lift-slab construction method on Trinity’s campus, Ford crafted a campus that would harmonize relationships among buildings, students, and faculty.

6. Move-In Day In its 150-year history, Trinity has made three moves between three cities before finally finding a permanent home on its Skyline campus. Through each move, the Trinity community banded together to help the University settle in its new home, showing “pitching in” as an innate part of the Tiger spirit.

Now with its roots firmly in place, Trinity’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni turn to a different type of Move-In Day to welcome newcomers to campus.

8. Entrepreneurship Rewind to 1870, and two Trinity brothers are inventing a modern cotton gin. Fast-forward to 2019, and the University's spirit of entrepreneurship still resonates, with student startups taking San Antonio by storm.

A New KIND of Entrepreneur Daniel Lubetzky ’90 uses the market for social good. The founder and CEO of KIND Snacks says, “I think about the problem that I’m trying to solve, and then my brain starts tinkering with, ‘How can we do this in a creative way?’”

The Center for the Sciences and Innovation is Trinity’s hub of discovery, known on campus as “The Cube.” Here, students collaborate on new ideas as part of the University’s entrepreneurship program, open to students of all majors.

12. Bid Day For more than 75 years, Trinity has done Greek Life a bit differently—starting with “Bid Day” for newly inducted fraternity and sorority members.

And while the term “bid day” was first coined at Trinity in the early 1990s, Greek societies on campus date back to the Tehuacana years when the University permitted fraternities Phi Delta Theta and Beta Theta Pi to accept members.

13. TUVAC Trinity students have always preferred action to activism. What started as the Community Service Program in 1965 is now the Trinity University Volunteer Action Community, helping the campus contribute more than 100,000 hours of community service annually.

15. Bridgeport Pink Bricks When O’Neil Ford designed Trinity’s campus, he turned to the Bridgeport Brick Company near his hometown of Denton for special bricks that were “Bridgeport pink”—a color with a distinct, unpatterned mixture of pinks and whites.

16. ROTC Established in the fall of 1952, Trinity’s ROTC program remained obligatory until 1970 and no longer operated on campus by 1991, which also caused the shuttering of the University’s Department of Military Science.

18. Dress Codes From long dresses and leather shoes to “just don’t be barefoot in the dining hall,” Trinity’s dress code changed significantly over a century, most notably allowing women more and more freedom.

By the late 1950s, women were even allowed to wear pants!

20. Desegregation As the civil rights movement gained momentum in the early 1950s, Trinity began preparing a strategy to integrate the University community. The University had begun admitting students of all colors to its downtown evening school in 1949, but no such policy yet existed on campus. The move already had overwhelming support from faculty and students, and by 1955, Dean Bruce Thomas reported the enrollment of seven Black students for the fall semester.

22. Love in Parker Chapel For generations of Tigers, Parker Chapel has provided a perfect venue for weddings. Linda Hawthorne Ruhmann ’66, ’81 and Bill Ruhmann ’67, the first-ever Trinity couple married in the chapel in 1966, couldn’t imagine a better day: “It felt like a beautiful dream,” Linda recalls, as Bill says, “We never have and never will forget our vows, or marriage day, in Parker Chapel.”

23. Urban Studies and Earl Lewis Earl Lewis, Trinity's first tenured African American professor, joined the University in 1968.

Lewis was called upon to direct a two-year graduate program in Urban Studies; over the course of his 22-year tenure, Lewis and his colleagues trained and mentored more than 250 men and women to work in public and civil service.

More than a dozen mayors, city council members, and city managers later, the Urban Studies program continues to produce graduates who have a profound impact on the cities and societies around them.

24. Trinity Tennis History is made on the court, as Trinity Tennis is the sport of legends.

The DI-era saw Trinity as a launching pad for student-athletes to go pro, and DIII Tennis captured both the men’s and women’s 2000 NCAA Championships, minutes apart and in two different states. But perhaps the most notorious piece of Tiger Tennis history? Larry Gottfried (Trinity) served John McEnroe (Stanford) his only collegiate loss in 1978.

Trinity Debate While Trinity Debate had its origins in student literary societies in the 1870s, debate would become a highly regarded campus activity by the 1940s, with extensive coverage in regional newspapers. Trinity debate still thrives locally and nationwide and competes against heavyweights such as Harvard and Emory.

27. Forbidden Love In the 1890s, a series of student regulations enforcing student behavior were ratified, the most unpopular being Rule Nine: male and female students were not allowed to communicate with each other.

"Students of the opposite sex are strictly forbidden all communication with each other of every kind; and they are considered under this rule from time of their arrival at the University until they leave."

To students, Rule Nine represented the ultimate challenge of their undergraduate career, and their efforts to circumvent the regulation became cherished contributions to Trinity’s student folklore.

29. Go Spurs Go!

28. Nacho Hour Trinity University is “so San Antonio” that nachos are a weekly ritual. Every Wednesday afternoon at 3:33 p.m., students, faculty, and staff line up in Coates Student Center for a free nacho buffet, where nacho lovers can treat themselves to a tub of tortilla chips and buckets of sour cream, salsa, and jalapeños—as much as they can fit into one little paper food tray.

San Antonio’s heartbeat runs a bit faster when the Spurs are rolling through the NBA playoffs. In addition to Trinity’s annual tribute to the silver and black—a threestory banner hanging on Murchison Tower that reads “GO SPURS GO”—Trinity students, faculty and staff are also a courtside fixture at NBA games thanks to Trinity Night at the Spurs.

30. Library Mural Made up of 800 images and using more than 5,000 languages, artist James Sicner’s “Man’s Evolving Images” creates a unique tribute to the evolution of art. Wrapped around the staircase on the third floor of Coates Library, the largest montage mural in the world was built between 1979 and 1983.

31. All-Steinway Campus Trinity University joined 168 other schools around the world when it became an all-Steinway campus in 2013. Thanks to the generosity of Trinity Trustees Jim ’68 and Janet St. Clair Dicke ’68, 43 Steinway pianos call Trinity’s campus home, including a custom piano with maroon accents for the Ruth Taylor Recital Hall.

32. Early Women's Athletics In the opening decades of the 20th century, Trinity women displayed a growing interest in sports and physical education. However, because female students were not permitted to leave campus, their games were limited to contests between students living in town and those in the dormitories. It was not until the passage of Title IX legislation in 1972, which mandated equality of funding for both sexes, that Trinity began to develop intercollegiate women’s teams.

33. Summer Bridge Program Since 2010, Trinity’s Summer Bridge Program has given first-generation and underrepresented first-year students a chance to come to campus early and transition to college life.

More than 200 Tigers have gone through the program, which gives an introduction to college-level coursework, writing, and timemanagement skills needed to succeed when the semester starts.

34. Midnight Breakfast Food during finals week is a must at Trinity, especially late at night. And when the clock strikes midnight on one reading day each semester, many Trinity students ditch the books for some breakfast. Professors, staff, and administration come to serve students pancakes, eggs, sausages, and more.

Trinity’s first official entry into Fiesta— San Antonio’s iconic, annual celebration— came in 1946, when the University entered floats in the Battle of Flowers and River parades. In 2002, Trinity unveiled a colossal tigershaped helium balloon, which has remained a permanent fixture at Fiesta parades since.

In 2003, Trinity also began producing an annual series of Fiesta medals. Medals have featured campus landmarks, historical trinkets, and the everpopular LeeRoy the Tiger.

Fiesta Fools!

On April 1, 2015, Trinity University announced the newest addition to its lineup of majors: Fiesta! An interdisciplinary major combining culture, arts, and engineering, Fiesta! required advanced language study and a concentration in piñata building, cascarón design, river sustainability management, or balloon wrangling. 37. Coleen Grissom

36. Study Abroad Learning that Trinity students have studied abroad in more than 45 countries on six continents may not actually come as a surprise: Since the University’s founding, Trinity has placed an emphasis on international education. As early as the 1890s, Trinity faculty had studied "abroad" at the University of Chicago (three weeks by ship to Europe and back wasn’t yet in the budget). Fast forward half a century, and by 1953 the University was offering at least two study abroad programs to Europe. By the early 1980s, Trinity had established several relationships with universities in different countries.

Participation has increased from 38 students in 1981-82 to more than 35 percent of the student body today.

Coleen Grissom joined the Trinity ranks in 1958, but her legacy began in earnest when President Laurie offered her the post of associate dean of Student Life and assistant professor of English. By 2001, when Grissom stepped away from the vice presidency to become a full-time faculty member in the Department of English, Trinity’s student life had changed dramatically—and most would say for the better.

Dean Again?

On April 1, 2019, Trinity University announced that Dean Grissom would be resuming her post, ousting David Tuttle as Dean of Students and reverting to a decades-old student handbook in the process. But don’t be fooled— her position only lasted for one particular day.

38. Student-to-Gardener Ratio Trinity has long touted its incredible student-to-faculty ratio, currently sitting at 9-to-1. But did you really live on campus for three or four years without snickering about its student-to-gardener ratio? “One might even say,” cites a March 1995 Trinitonian article, “the student-to-gardener ratio is nearly as famous as Trinity’s academic reputation.”

39. Living-Learning Communities Trinity’s take on student housing doesn’t fit into the traditional notion of “dorm life.” Instead, students have the option to house in living-learning communities, where diverse groups of Tigers—united by a unique theme—can collaborate outside the classroom, from sustainability and entrepreneurship to languagelearning and community service.

40. MLK Jr. March Trinity has honored the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. for decades, launching a speaker series and an officially sanctioned celebration in 1997 when an estimated 300-plus students, faculty, and staff attended San Antonio’s MLK Jr. March. This same enthusiasm carries forward to the present day: Trinity continues to honor MLK day as a chance to march for equity for all.

42. Stumberg Competition The Stumberg New Venture Competition is an annual, two-part contest that aims to inspire innovation and prepare student leaders for real-world experiences. Founded in 2015, the competition honors the legacy of the late San Antonio businessman and civic leader Louis H. Stumberg and has provided more than $215,000 in seed money to fund 21 startups so far, with 16 of these companies still active. After a seed round held each spring, a panel of contest judges choose five startup finalists to receive a $5,000 prize. These five teams then compete for the grand prize of $25,000 in the final round the following fall.

43. Cactus Garden Situated below the Student Union building in the 1950s, the cactus garden showcased a sandy patch of San Antonio’s native Texas landscape. The prickly patch even doubled as an outdoor event venue.

44. Waxahachie Campus In 1902, Trinity moved from its humble Tehuacana home to the larger town of Waxahachie, opening a world of new connections for the growing University. In Waxahachie, the University officially affiliated with the national Presbyterian Church, which came with access to new fundraising and networking possibilities. And despite the stock market crash of 1929, Trinity dove headlong into improving facilities, expanding student organizations, and improving athletics. Trinity also took steps to create greater diversity in the studies available: math, astronomy, English, Greek, and Latin, chemistry, physics, biology, geology, history, modern languages, Bible study, philosophy, and education.

45. Tiger Network In 2015, Trinity founded the Tiger Network to broadcast on-campus athletics events and lectures to a worldwide audience. In the spirit of experiential learning, students are hired as interns and play-by-play announcers to learn the basics of broadcasting live events. Athletics home games and prominent lecture series combine for a schedule of more than 100 live events per year.

46. Faith on Campus In 1877, Trinity became the first college in Texas to charter a YMCA chapter, kicking off the University’s long history of Trinity’s student-run religious organizations. Almost 150 years later, faith on campus has expanded from a Christian chapel attendance requirement to inclusivity of all faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as well as East Asian religions and spiritual awareness and meditation practices.

47. The Kissing Pond The garden between Murchison Hall and the Coates Esplanade features a serene koi pond and beautiful stone benches and has a history as a popular enclave for romantic proposals.

49. Dean's Half Marathon Challenge Since 2008, Dean of Students David Tuttle has led a sea of maroonclad Tigers through 13.1 grueling miles at the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon/Half-Marathon. And while running is an individual sport, training groups routinely run for a cause to support others: Trinity runners also conduct an annual food drive in support of the San Antonio Food Bank.

50. Bowling Alley Through strikes, spares, and gutter balls, students hit the Sams Center bowling alley for a good time. In addition to a school bowling team, there were faculty bowling leagues and intramural teams. With repairs growing costly, the bowling alley was replaced by a fitness center when the Sams Center became the Bell Athletic Center in 1991.

51. Don't Step on the Seal!

E Tribus Unum. “From Three, One.” Trinity’s motto borders the image of sunshine beaming from a book. The traditional seal graces the walkway before Northrup Hall and is protected by a terrible curse: Students who step on the seal, as the superstition goes, will not graduate in four years.

52. Beeson Hall Fire On the morning of Oct. 28, 1929, a fire razed Beeson Hall on Trinity’s Waxahachie campus.

The fast-spreading blaze left little opportunity for residents to carry out their belongings. Trinity President John Harmon Burma attempted to view the conflagration positively. "In place of this old fire trap," he told a friend, "there must rise a fire-proof building that will be adequate to the needs of Trinity, a credit to the Presbyterian Church, and an honor to our Lord."

53. The Slab Given the prominence of Trinity’s architectural history, it may come as a surprise that a concrete slab was once the University’s center of campus social activities. Constructed on lower campus in 1952, The Slab initially functioned as a temporary outdoor gymnasium. Enhanced by the construction of an adjacent covered barbeque pit, The Slab served as a multi-purpose venue for a kaleidoscope of campus events.

58. Trinity Ring Trinity’s tradition of class rings began on the Waxahachie campus in April 1933, when business manager Will McPherson issued a set of four-karat bands to the senior class. 59. Spirit Groups Over the years, pep organizations have included stand band, cheerleading, pep squads, the Tigerettes baton twirlers, and the Prowlers dance squad.

61. Let it Snow Snow at Trinity has been a rare, slightly disruptive, but always welcome recurrence. In January 1985, the worst snowstorm in San Antonio history hit Trinity. While it didn’t cause significant structural damage, the 13.5-inch record snowfall caused about 10 percent of the staff of Mabee Hall to camp out inside the building for the weekend.

62. Outdoor Swimming Pool The outdoor swimming pool, a part of Trinity’s National Historic District, opened to the campus in 1958.

D. Harold Byrd Jr., a Trinity student, made a splash when he funded the construction of the heated pool in honor of his parents and brother.

64. Victory Bell Across the country in 1869, metalworkers in New England were forging a bell—one that would become Trinity’s Victory Bell, brought to the Trinity campus in 1995 to provide spirit and enthusiasm for Tiger fans at athletic events.

The Center for the Sciences and Innovation The Center for the Sciences and Innovation—fondly known on campus as CSI—is a hub for collaborative learning and “productive collisions” for all students at Trinity. The University began construction in 2010, and the building was completed in 2014. The $127-million project is still the largest construction project the University has ever undertaken.

67. Registration Before World War I, incoming students had to pay a registration fee of $9 to enroll. According to the 1915 Course of Study Bulletin, “students who register for the fall term after 4:15 on September twenty-fourth will be charged an extra fee of one dollar.” While things have changed a bit since then, the now-digital registration process is still personal for each student.

68. National Championships Across the NCAA landscape, Trinity varsity athletics has excelled on the field, on the court, and around the track.

70. Turkey Trot Every year before Thanksgiving, Tigers burn off anticipatory calories with the Turkey Trot, a roughly twomile race around campus. The race began in 1967, and then-intramural director Jim Potter ’63, ’67 says the race’s namesake derived from the 16-pound grand prize: a frozen turkey.

71. Reading TUgether Reading TUgether emphasizes the value of literature and lifelong learning that is a hallmark of education at Trinity. Greg Mortenson delivered the first Reading TUgether lecture in 2008. Since then, notable authors and experts have delivered the lecture every fall semester to an audience of first-year students and other interested community members.

72. Handbell Ensemble Good rhythm and tireless arms are required for one of Trinity’s most unique ensembles. The Handbell Ensemble has performed across the state of Texas and is especially active around Christmastime, setting up music stands outside during Christmas on Oakmont.

73. Students + Startups Since 2016, Students + Startups has placed Tigers right in the middle of San Antonio’s exploding startup scene.

The program matches students with internships at a variety of San Antonio startups for the summer.

74. McMelvin the Moose McMelvin the Moose, despite his name, was a mounted and stuffed caribou head that cultivated quite the following on campus in the mid1950s. The “symbol of student dissent,” according to Trinity history professor Donald Everett, became the unofficial mascot of Trinity until his fiery death during the 1957 homecoming festivities.

83. Evolution of the Athletic Center Built in 1963 as the Earl C. Sams Center, the athletic facility would eventually be gutted, improved, and re-opened as the Bell Athletic Center in October 1992.

Then, 2018 saw the renovation of Sams Gymnasium to Ron and Genie Calgaard Gymnasium, the addition of the Stumberg Performance Center, and expanded fitness facilities. While there’s no bowling alley left, today the Bell Athletic Center is home to two gymnasiums and a state-ofthe-art natatorium, where the University hosts its home meets and tournaments.

84. Diversity Events Trinity’s many and diverse student groups are constantly finding new ways to celebrate holidays, expand their fellow Tigers’ world views, and show pride in their cultures.

85. Chili Cook-Offs Pride for the signature Texas dish could be felt—and smelled—on campus during Chili Cook-Off events in the late 1970s and early ’80s. The annual competition was hosted by the Chi Beta Epsilon sorority, and prizes were awarded for the best tasting chili, the worst tasting chili, and the best theme.

Merging with the University of San Antonio Between the Great Depression and World War II, Trinity’s 1942 move to San Antonio didn’t have the best timing—but San Antonio officials found support among local donors to merge with a small, struggling Methodist school called the University of San Antonio.

87. Murchison Tower In 1964 the T. Frank Murchison Memorial Tower, which holds the Carolyn Calvert Bells, became a campus landmark. Designed by architect O’Neil Ford, Murchison Tower is universally considered the most iconic building on campus.

At 166 feet tall—and placed on one of the highest spots on Trinity’s Skyline campus—the apex of the tower gives visitors an unparalleled view of surrounding San Antonio. At one time the highest point in San Antonio, the building would also serve as a spiritual predecessor to Ford’s work on the San Antonio Tower of the Americas.

The tower has also grown to play a central role in student life and traditions. A Tower Climb bookends Trinity students’ time on campus as they climb more than 200 stairs to meet the University president at the top.

91. Hallympics Since 1998, Trinity’s residence halls have competed in the mania that is Hallympics. The good-natured competition lasts a week, with residence hall teams going head-to-head in contests ranging from kickball and flag football to trivia and chess.

92. Magic Stones “A Conversation with Magic Stones,” sculpted by Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth, was given to the University in 1983 by Jane and Arthur Stieren. Students have embraced the sculpture as an integral part of the Trinity experience, flocking to the Magic Stones for their mystical, GPA-boosting powers.

94. Outdoor Recreation For more than 25 years, Outdoor Recreation—fondly known as O-Rec— has led Tigers on adventures across the country. Students crawl among cacti, paddle scenic rivers, and climb high mountains.

95. Northrup Hall Since the 1950s, Northrup Hall has served as the administrative nexus of Trinity’s campus, hosting Trustee Board meetings, president’s offices, and a number of other services.

Originally an O’Neil Ford building, Northrup Hall was rebuilt in 2002 by Robert A.M. Stern.

Nestled in twisting live oak trees, the beautiful homes of Oakmont Court are reserved for Trinity leadership. The University first acquired these properties in the 1950s, and while some of the homes have been around since the 1890s, the president’s home on Oakmont was designed by O’Neil Ford soon after the San Antonio campus was built.

97. Undergraduate Research At Trinity, undergraduate research is about more than crunching data doomed for the dusty back pages of an academic journal. From the University’s very first steps into undergraduate research in the literature courses of the 1890s, our students have made breakthroughs that enact real change.

They’ve prevented the spread of mosquito-borne disease, helped save diabetic limbs from amputation, fought “fake news,” demonstrated the ecological consequences of global warming, and even saved priceless Medieval music from oblivion.

These breakthroughs aren’t limited to fields in STEM, business, or the humanities; in many cases, Tigers have tackled projects that bridge multiple disciplines.

Regardless of academic field, Trinity’s support for undergraduate research empowers students to dig deeper, all under the tutelage of expert professors and mentors.

98. San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Trinity University was invited by San Antonio’s Chamber of Commerce to move to the city in 1941. Upon arrival, Trinity cultivated lasting connections to the Chamber of Commerce itself.

Multiple University presidents and Trustees would go on to transform San Antonio’s economy, government policy, and workforce by serving on the Chamber board.

99. Graduate Programs From the very origins of the University, founders were determined to implement a number of post-baccalaureate programs. Trinity would end up with a short-lived law school and for a brief period, offered both master's and doctoral degrees. Most notably, graduate programs at Trinity underwent an ambitious expansion during the presidency of James Laurie, starting in 1958. They would reach their peak at Trinity by the 1970s, when the University listed 21 programs. Today, the University offers six unique programs in accounting, education, and health care administration.

100. Historic District Designation Trinity University is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a modernist historic district.

The National Parks Service designated the Trinity campus as a National Historic District in May 2018.

The district encompasses 26 buildings and three structures designed by O’Neil Ford, including Murchison Tower, Parker Chapel, Laurie Auditorium, and the Coates Student Center.

101. The Mirage When the inaugural edition of Trinity’s yearbook failed to materialize in 1911, it appeared a year later in 1912 as the Mirage. The student-produced publication included class histories, fictional essays, and a section on campus humor, along with extensive photographs.

102. Off-Campus Hot Spots For generations, Trinity students have spilled off-campus to eat, drink, and de-stress. In the evenings, Tigers make runs to the original Taco Cabana on Hildebrand and San Pedro, grab burgers at Tycoon Flats, and pack clubs such as Bombay’s and others along the St. Mary’s strip.

106. CAT Alliance It’s totally paw-some: The Trinity Cat Alliance (CAT) was founded in 2004 to keep the campus cat population healthy and fed.

109. The Great Trinity Experiment To commemorate the inauguration of Trinity’s 19th president, Danny J. Anderson, the Trinity community flipped the traditional classroom model for the “Great Trinity Experiment.” Energetic and innovative students, staff, and alumni took to the front of the classroom to teach hands-on sessions to other Tigers.

111. Tuna Fishing Tigers Did you know Trinity had a tuna fishing team?

We didn’t either. And evidently, neither did the group of five unsuspecting undergraduates who saw the team as a “research opportunity” and set sail in Nova Scotia in 1972. The team lasted two years after catching cod, haddock, halibut, and mackerel—but never any tuna.

112. Neidorff Art Gallery The Michael and Noémi Neidorff Art Gallery serves the Trinity University and San Antonio communities by presenting a dynamic program of exhibitions, lectures, and events that contribute to an ongoing dialogue in the visual arts.

113. Swing-In and Swing-Out One of Trinity’s most revered traditions began on the Waxahachie campus.

In 1924, Swing-In began as a warm reception for first-year female students, where sophomore women welcomed them to the Trinity community. In 1925, Swing-Out was established, a banquet ceremony hosted by junior women to honor seniors.

The Digital Revolution Trinity was ahead of the curve when in 1960, the mathematics department acquired a rebuilt Royal Precision Digital LGP-30 computer, which was the size of an office desk (a 1960 Trinitonian article noted that “its relative compactness is one of its chief advantages.�) Less than a decade later, the University was one of the first to complete digital course registration, conducting the process using computer punch cards in May 1968.

119. Frisbee Golf The mania of frisbee golf hit campus in the early 1970s, developing as a recreational sport independent of the University’s intramural program.

Ardent Frisbee golf enthusiasts designed an 18-hole course that embraced both the lower and upper levels of the campus, which remains designated an official tournament site by the Frisbee Golf Association of the United States.

120. Student Activism Trinity students have a long history of taking action. For decades, they’ve banded together to make their voices heard through social groups, demonstrations, and even protests on campus. From speaking out against the DI tennis move to registering students to vote, student activists work to affect social change.

121. Trinity in Print Trinity’s “150 Memories” project could not have happened without the research provided by three books thoroughly detailing Trinity’s history. All published

by Trinity University Press over the past 50 years, these books read as unofficial encyclopedias into Trinity’s past, filled with history and anecdotes that would be long gone if not preserved by these publications.

122. Residential Life On Trinity’s first campus in Tehuacana, dorm rooms were hard to come by until the mid 1890s, when the University acquired expanded residences for men and women (separately, of course). Through its time in Waxahachie and its first decades in San Antonio, the campus was primarily a mix of residential and commuter students—the latter especially for those enrolled in graduate programs. But in the mid 1980s, the University made a commitment to its undergraduates to invest in well-rounded education, and all first-year students were required to live on campus in residence halls beginning in the 1985-86 academic year. Now, with a three-year residency requirement, Trinity houses new students together in a supportive environment in the first-year quad.

As sophomores, students live in the Sophomore College, and as juniors and seniors they can live on campus or in the University’s apartment complex, City Vista.

123. Arts in the Community Since more than 25 percent of its student body participates in musical ensembles or other performance arts, many Trinity graduates become future musicians, performers, designers, and other creative types. As they venture out into the world, these individuals become passionate advocates for the power of the arts.

124. Cardiac Hill For every step students takes toward their Trinity degree, none exacts the physical toll of the steps up Cardiac Hill. Climbing this bank of 46 steps, built to connect lower campus to the Coates Esplanade and upper campus, is a rite of passage for every Trinity student—and a precursor of what’s to come in the Tower Climb!

In addition to an ever-expanding digital and print collection, Coates Library boasts a special collections room with rare volumes. With more than 700,000 books and bound periodicals, Coates Library acquires thousands of new volumes each year.

127. New Student Orientation The New Student Orientation (NSO) we know and love today is the product of almost a century of evolution. The class rivalry of days past has given way to the instilling of school spirit and academic awareness. Throw in a concert and a comedian, and you have a week of welcome to campus.

130. Choir Tours Since the 1930s, Trinity’s choirs have taken an annual spring tour to perform across the country and around the world. The original aims of the choir tour were to generate favorable publicity for the University and give students an opportunity to perform in locations outside San Antonio. Almost a century later, Trinity choirs have performed on five continents and in almost all 50 states.

Tiger's Den In 1969, Trinity installed a lounge area for students known affectionately as the “Tiger’s Den.” Over the next 50 years, the space would function as a television lounge, a smoking lounge, a bar, and a coffeehouse. Today, most of its occupants come and go to check for snail-mail or care packages in their on-campus mailboxes.

Physical Education Requirement Physical education was made a mandatory part of the Trinity curriculum in 1911, when the University’s Board of Trustees first established a physical education department. Today, students can fulfill the requirement by roller skating, country western dancing, and just about everything in between!

135. Experiential Learning Though the term "experiential learning" wasn’t coined until the 2000s, Trinity students have been doing it for more than a century.

One hundred fifty years ago, Trinity University began redefining the liberal arts, giving students the opportunity for hands-on learning inside and outside of the classroom.

From the very beginning of Trinity’s existence, Tigers have jumped headfirst into real-world experience, from creating new cotton gin machines to training to be ministers.

That spirit of collaboration has remained rooted in Trinity’s culture.

Today, students and professors still work closely together, performing research typically unheard of at the undergraduate level and exploring the world through faculty-led study abroad programs. Tigers take on internships that shake up the status quo and dive into entrepreneurial pursuits that create new products and services. These experiences cultivate a community of lifelong learners with ambition and empathy, driven by a sense of duty to ourselves and to the world.

136. Anniversary Celebrations Trinity’s 150th celebration isn’t the first time the University has reminisced on its past. As Trinity reached its semicentennial, centennial, and sesquicentennial markers, we’ve viewed these periods as turning points in a larger story.

TRINITY AT 50

By 1919, Trinity University had already changed campuses once (from Tehuacana to Waxahachie) and granted 500 bachelor's degrees. At this semicentennial mark, President Samuel L. Hornbeak decided to capitalize on the anniversary by beginning a drive to raise Trinity’s endowment to the million-dollar level.

This drive began with a two-day kickoff celebration with a memorial service for students who had died in the first world war, meetings of the Alumni and Former Students’ Association, and a pageant depicting “Fifty Years of College Life.”

By 1969, Trinity had moved to its Skyline campus in San Antonio, and was in the midst of an ambitious development of both its campus and academic resources. This development, commonly known as the “miracle on Trinity Hill,” was spearheaded by President James Laurie. Beginning with a Founders' Day centennial flag-raising ceremony and an all-school picnic, celebrations also included symposiums, a ceremony marking the return of the Waxahachie main building's cornerstone to the Trinity campus, and a musical dramatization of Trinity's first 100 years presented in conjunction with the Dallas Theater Center.

TRINITY AT 150

At Trinity’s sesquicentennial, the University launched a yearlong celebration for 2019. Starting in February, President Danny Anderson kicked off the festivities with a day of service, where more than 500 students, faculty, staff, and alumni provided more than 1,500 hours of community service. That evening, participants returned to campus to celebrate with food and drink, live music, and fireworks.

Throughout the year, Trinity’s 150th Anniversary has also been an opportunity for reunions across Trinity’s academic departments and co-curricular organizations, including an alumni choir festival and alumni chapter gatherings. Trinity’s 150th milestone was also honored with an official proclamation at the Texas legislature, presided over by Governor Greg Abbott.

137. Trinity Endowment In 1869, Trinity’s initial endowment consisted of about $30,000 worth of undeveloped land and a few residential homes in Tehuacana, Texas.

But over the past 150 years, Tigers around the world have helped build an endowment now worth $1.3 billion dollars, strengthened by philanthropy and long-term stewardship.

From its inception as Crossroads Africa in 1968, the Peace Corps has seen more than 120 volunteers from Trinity University—in fact, by 2001, Trinity had produced more volunteers for the organization than any other college or university in South Texas.

Trinity University Press was established in 1967, publishing about a half-dozen books a year in the fields of religion, history, art and architectural history, bibliography, and regional subjects. After shuttering in 1989, the Press was revived at the dawn of the new millennium with an intensity that has earned the small press kudos and awards around the globe.

140. Freshman Beanies Shortly after Trinity’s move to the Waxahachie campus, the tradition of the freshman beanie hit campus. By the 1920s, they had become a fully fledged rite of initiation, but would eventually disappear with a whimper during the orientation of 1970.

141. Alumni Weekend The concept of homecoming first picked up steam at Trinity after WWII, and over the decades, homecoming grew into a series of week-long celebrations that included parades and dances. In the early 1980s, a new tradition emerged that diverged from the fall homecoming: Alumni Weekend. Originally titled “A Class Act,” the first such celebration took place in the Spring of 1983, and combined class reunions with academically and professionally enriching lectures and events.

Trinity University Logos Red brick will forever be synonymous with the Trinity brand, but the University’s graphical face and identity have evolved to keep pace with its march toward modernity throughout the last 150 years. At the same time, Trinity’s spirit brand has also experienced changes, with the tiger mascot and accompanying images adopted in the 1910s.

143. The Trinitonian In 1915, Trinity students transformed a monthly literary publication to a weekly newspaper. Each Tuesday, Trinitonian staffers kept Tigers informed of campus, local and world events and issues.

Throughout the next 100 years, the Trinitonian would continue to be a force majeure on campus, covering—and sometimes causing—controversy, but always sparking conversation.

144. Campus Lecture Series Trinity University hosts more than a dozen regular campus lecture series where Tigers make meaningful connections each year with renowned scientists, world leaders, Nobel Prize winners, and best-selling authors.

145. Trinity Theater All the world’s a stage. But at Trinity, the stage becomes a powerful agent of positive change in the world. Since the arrival of drama as an academic mainstay in University’s curriculum, Trinity has hosted and assembled productions that spark controversial but cutting-edge conversations.

Over the years Trinity has added some memorable sports teams to the athletics roster. Anything students enjoyed was fair game, including trap and skeet, bowling, equestrian riding, and chess.

147. Courses of Study Bulletin Trinity’s Courses of Study Bulletin started out as the guidebook for all things Trinity, published for Trinity’s inaugural academic year, 1869-70. As the University added departments, programs, and courses, so too did it add pages to the bulletin. Eventually, it migrated to a fully digital format, allowing students to effortlessly search through hundreds of requirements before finding the one they needed to argue with their adviser about.

148. Trinity Magazine Meta, right?

Trinity University’s magazine seeks to foster a sense of connectedness among all members of the University community, including alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, donors, and friends. The first publication of the official alumni magazine was in July 1947 and has since transformed into a biannual collection of stories and articles with a strong alumni focus.

150. First Day of Classes Since Sept. 23, 1869, first-day butterflies and finding the right classroom have been staples of back-to-school schedules. And while the University has grown from those original five faculty and seven students to more than 250 faculty and 2,400 students, Trinity’s campus remains a tightknit community that begins forging friendships on day one.

ALUMNI NEWS 1869 Challenge: Accepted The 1869 Challenge, previously the 24-Hour Challenge, was held in October 2018. In just 31 hours, Trinity’s community of students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and University supporters raised $526,365. On average, Tigers donated more than $250 per minute, and the University received nearly 2,900 gifts. Students made 554 gifts and raised $9,444, an increase of 833 percent over the prior year. Varsity athletics raised a total of $129,260. Creative challenges by parents and student organizations like Tigers for Liberty, Mock Trial Club, and Loon-ECrew helped the University reach all potential donors.

150 Voices Strong More than 120 Trinity choir alumni spanning seven decades and 22 states returned to Trinity for the Alumni Choir Festival in February.

The festival was sponsored by the Dickson-Allen Foundation, Steinway Piano Gallery of San Antonio, and Trinity’s 150th Anniversary Committee. The weekend of music-making and fellowship included Trinity’s spring choir concert, a breakfast to celebrate former choir director Claude Zetty, and a concert that sat Trinity alumni with more than 50 current choir students. The combined choir was more than 150 voices strong: a tribute to Trinity’s 150th Anniversary.

Dynamic Duo University legend Coleen Grissom and The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood discussed life and literature together during an online webinar in May. This event was the culmination of a fundraising campaign for student scholarships as part of Grissom’s retirement after 58 years at Trinity. A 1:1 matching gift challenge by Jim ’68 and Janet ’68 Dicke motivated donors to make a gift to the Coleen Grissom Endowed Scholarship Fund. Since January 2019, Trinity has raised $109,696 for this fund from more than 270 donors.

Trinity on Tour More than 80 Tigers from around the country convened for a day of learning in Dallas at the Hilton Anatole. After touring the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, attendees enjoyed lunch, where keynote speaker Nick Severino ’88, vice president and CFO of Apple Retail, recounted highlights of his Trinity journey, including studying abroad and the relationship he shared with professor Donald Clark, noting that these experiences helped prepare him for his current role at Apple. The event ended with alumni attending “classes without quizzes” and the president’s reception.

Dewell then attended and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in law and practiced law in San Francisco, Seattle, and Everett, Wash. He received a number of honors during his law practice and served on several nonprofit boards, the Everett School Board and the Washington State Bar Association Disciplinary Board and Board of Governors. Since retirement, he has performed trail building work with the Washington Trails Association as a crew leader and assistant crew leader.

He also published a book on trail building, Tread and Retread the Trails, which is in its third edition. He has been married since 1954, has three daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is very proud to have graduated from Trinity University as the first college graduate in his family.

The photograph was made at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio at the same time Riley was a photography student. It is a large black-and-white print featuring the three “Spring Fairies” of the ballad written by her friend, the late Gene Elder ’73.

She completed an overseas trip promoting Toastmasters throughout Asia. When not traveling, she lives in a lighthouse overlooking Lake Travis.

Ian Troy French was

commissioned in 1974 to the U.S. Army and served six years in active duty. He then went into the Army Reserves. He worked in defense and intelligence firms for 18 years and supported intelligence agencies. Following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2011, he was mobilized, serving three years before retiring. French lived in El Paso, Texas, San Diego, Germany, and Laurel, Md. After retirement, he was hired by the NSA, served at Ft. Meade, Md., took two tours in Iraq, and took one tour in Afghanistan.

After 12 years, he retired (again) from federal service and lives in Delaware. French enjoys travel, home renovation (on his 12th house), and disaster response (Team Rubicon).

1976 Lawrence P. Moon , CFSP, chair-

man and CEO of the Sandstone Group and Lakeside Manufacturing Inc. in West Milwaukee, Wisc., was the recipient of the 2019 North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) William W. Carpenter Award. The award is the association’s highest honor, given to a foodservice industry professional who has continually contributed to NAFEM’s success and to the enrichment of the industry for more than 20 years. Lakeside Manufacturing provided a vast array of storage equipment for the Center for the Sciences and Innovation’s lab functions. Moon serves on the Trinity University Board of Visitors and was one of the early members of the Trinity University Network of Entrepreneurs. Closer to home, Moon has been involved with the Chicago Alumni Chapter.

1977 Laura Wilson Howson taught art in Texas and received an MFA from UT Austin. Howson then joined the Peace Corps in the Eastern Caribbean. She worked in corporate America and raised a family. She is now an adjunct professor at Passaic Community College in New Jersey.

Erick Blackwelder lives with his wife, Patty, in Northern Virginia, 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. Both of his daughters were married in 2017.

He is branch marketing director at the Herndon, Va., branch of Churchill Mortgage.

Leslie Bogar is the director of professional learning on the Colorado Association of School Boards. She oversees association communications, events, and the school board leadership development program.

1979 B.D. Griffin was appointed

county attorney for Montgomery County, Texas, in March 2019.

1980 Lee Blaine is the 2014 recipient

of the Directors Guild of America’s Frank Capra Award and is a member of the DGA board of directors. Blaine works globally as the first assistant director on national television commercials and shows.

Robert Bowling serves as the

hearing office chief administrative law judge for the Lexington Office of Hearing Operations for the Social Security Administration in Lexington, Ky. The office has 11 administrative law judges, 16 attorney advisers, and management and staff of around 40.

Margaret McNeal has been

working as a teacher for CypressFairbanks ISD for the past 17 years. Her son, Andrew, works as an environmental scientist for ERM in Austin. Her daughter, Lauren, teaches with her in Cy-Fair. Margaret and her husband, Tom, reside in Houston.

Nancy Rasmussen completed

the July 2018 Win for KC women’s triathlon after celebrating 34 years of marriage to her husband Norm Rasmussen ’83.

vice president with Ascension Healthcare and was named ministry market executive for St. John Health System based in Tulsa. Mullins serves as chief executive for all of St. John’s sites, which include seven hospitals and more than 90 health care clinics and medical facilities in eastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. Mullins has more than 30 years of hospital leadership experience, including Quorum Health, where prior to joining Ascension he was regional vice president. Mullins is a retired captain of the Medical Service Corps, U.S. Naval Reserves. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

1992 Carrie Dodrill, Ph.D., opened a private psychotherapy services practice focusing on general emotional health, with a specialty in social anxiety and shyness.

Dodrill previously acted as a staff psychologist at the Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston. After graduating from Trinity, she completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Houston in 2003. Her clinical internship at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2001-02 focused on inpatient treatment of serious mental illness and outpatient cognitive-behavioral treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Houston Health Sciences Center in the Department of Family Medicine from 2004-06. In 2009, she joined the Debakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center. While at Debakey, she worked in various programs including behavioral health, primary care mental health integration, general mental health, and as an implementation research coordinator for the substance use disorders quality enhancement research initiative, and in compensation and pension.

Darrick Payne stopped seeing

patients in his regenerative medicine practice in December 2017.

He changed career paths, and now serves as vice president of compliance, chief medical officer, and director of marketing for a startup called Cannabis One. He took the company public in March 2019, trading as CBIS on the Canadian Securities Exchange, focused on aggregating premier brands and manufacturing.

Autumn Kervella returned from volunteering in the Peace Corps after serving in the Philippines as a children, youth, and family volunteer from 2017-19. Kervella taught at a university and worked for the Department of Social Welfare and Development as a youth facilitator working with out-of-school youth on life skills development.

with her master’s in pastoral ministry from Oblate School of Theology.

Kathryn Funderburg was accepted to the Ph.D. program in English at the University of California at Berkeley.

Across the nation, Trinity alumni chapters celebrated 150 years by spending a day in service at local nonprofits.

More than 80 alumni participated, bringing Trinity’s total hours of service to more than 1,500 at organizations across the U.S.

The New York Alumni Chapter attended the opening performance of the 52nd Street Project’s “Against the Grain! Plays That Fight Back” at the Five Angels Theater, followed by dinner at Haru Sushi, where 20 percent of the proceeds from the dinner were donated back to the 52nd Street Project.

nonprofit, pay-what-you-can Taste Community Restaurant, following their 150th Anniversary service event serving meals on Jan. 25.

New England New England Chapter alumni doubled the impact of their Making Connections event on Jan. 12, hosting a service event at Community Servings, a nonprofit food program providing services throughout Massachusetts to individuals and families living with critical and chronic illnesses.

My Memories of Trinity University Alumna from the Class of 1944 reflects on her time in Waxahachie, the Pearl Harbor bombing, and how mice in the dorms saved her from hazing

At 95 years of age, I still remember the first time I heard of Trinity

University. It was in the mid-1930s when I was about 10 years old.

The Trinity Choir was big in those days and toured around Texas. Our neighbor, Nell Anderson Dickson, who had attended Trinity in the late 1800s, always invited the choir to a supper at her home after their concert at our church in Cleburne, Texas, and she asked me to help serve the group. I was thrilled to be among those college students. That was when I first started wanting to go to Trinity.

When I did enter Trinity in the fall of 1941, we had no clue that it would be the school’s last year in Waxahachie, Texas. Texas boys who wanted to go into the ministry usually came to Trinity, as did girls like me who wanted to have a career in Christian education or secretly wanted to snag one of those preacher boys for a husband. The first time I saw my future husband, Ernie Dimaline ’44, was when he was leading a devotional, and I was very impressed with his voice. (He later admitted he first noticed me when I, too, gave a devotional.)

Sophomore girls were very active in hazing freshmen girls for the first six weeks, insisting we always wore our beanies, did not speak to upperclassmen, stopped whatever we were doing to recite little poems and do exercises, and so forth. I recall one time when two sophomores got my roommate and me up in the middle of the night. We heard the house mother coming down the hall, so the sophomores quickly hid under our beds. However, we had mice in dear old Drane Hall and had set mouse traps under our beds. Just as the house mother entered the room, one of the girls caught her foot in a mouse trap and let out a yell. That was the end of hazing for that night, much to our delight.

I think the people of Waxahachie really liked having us there. Trinity was located on the edge of town, and we had only one small drugstore across from the campus. There was no bus service, so when we wanted to go to town we stood on the drugstore corner and before long someone would come by and pick us up. I think people in Waxahachie made a point of driving by to give us rides.

The most important thing that happened that year was on Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when all of the students gathered outside to sit on the steps of our building and listen on the radio to President Roosevelt speaking to Congress and declaring war. I still remember the fear and the confusion we felt that day as we realized things would never be the same again. The boys were all talking about leaving school right then to join the armed forces, and some did.

It was near the end of the spring semester of 1942 when those of us who were left in school learned that Trinity University was moving to San Antonio. We were heartbroken! Finally after getting over the shock, a number of us decided that we wanted to make the move to San Antonio and try to help our beloved school get started there.

It was the fall of 1942 when we made the move to the campus of what had been the University of San Antonio. I was pleased to see that the girls’ dorm, Mary Catherine Hall, was much newer and nicer than Drane Hall. There would be no mice there.

Ernie surprised me later that year by slipping an engagement ring on my finger behind the Christmas tree in the parlor at Mary Catherine Hall. We were married in August of 1944. I invited Miss Davis, Trinity’s dean of women, and Mrs. Simms, the Trinity librarian, because I had learned to admire these women in Waxahachie and had worked for both of them in San Antonio. I did not expect them to come to Cleburne for the wedding.

As the reception was winding down, I had gone to change into my going away outfit when there was a knock on the bathroom door. I peeked out and was shocked to see Miss Davis and Mrs. Simms standing there. They wanted to tell me goodbye and wish me well in my marriage. These were the most dignified women I knew, and I was standing there in my underwear, but I felt like this was Trinity University coming to wish me well in my marriage. I was so overcome with emotion that all I could do was to embrace those women in tears with appreciation for all that Trinity had meant to me.
