Message from the President Dear Trinity Community, Another exciting year at Trinity High School is about to begin! Our 102nd year of educating and empowering young women is around the corner! The administration and staff have been busy creating schedules and calendars for the 2019-2020 academic year. As President, I am excited to share some of the good things happening, especially about our new Administrative Leadership Team.

Over the summer we welcomed Shena Keith as our new VP of Institutional Advancement. Shena has over twenty years of experience in faith based advancement and will truly be an asset to the team. I appointed Terri Hanrahan as Vice President of Academics and Susan Bedell as Vice President of Student Life. They are working together to coordinate the whole academic life of our students. Assisting them is our new Dean of Students, Margaret (Maggie) Carey. I am excited to work with this dynamic team of leaders to create a powerful experience for our young women.

As interim President, I have had the privilege of seeing the power and magic of Trinity “up close and personal.” And it truly is amazing­- from Bal Dominique where five women told their powerful stories about the difference Trinity made in their lives, and helped us raise over $125,000 for scholarships to handing diplomas to 95 beautiful, strong, prepared young women who earned over $23.5 million in college scholarships to working with faculty and staff who stepped up at every turn just to make Trinity work! All these experiences demonstrate the strength and character of Trinity and demonstrate its unique gift to its students.

Following in the footsteps of Sister Michelle as she transitions on, our new leaders and our veteran faculty and staff continue to work each day to create a quality educational experience that empowers our young women to lead lives of service and leadership. Trinity is alive and well, stronger than ever, and moving forward.

My dear friends, The magic moment has arrived. I am now officially retired from my beloved Trinity High School after 27 awesome years with you. We have shared so very much together – happy memories, wonderful friendships, as well as challenging moments to the heart. You so readily opened your arms to me in friendship and that friendship will most certainly continue to grow. You have so generously opened your hearts, volunteered for the tasks at hand, attended events with ready Trinity spirit. You have so beautifully supported the young women of Trinity to have the opportunity to experience a Sinsinawa Dominican quality education that you experienced. I know you will continue to support the mission/vision of Trinity. The excellent leadership of our interim President, my friend, my Sister, Sister Judy Schaefer, O.P. is moving Trinity forward, empowering young women to be leaders, to be women of integrity who will make a difference. It is with much love and gratitude that I thank you for your prayers, love and friendship. Together we can be proud of what we have done, yet there is so much more to do – so continue to turn on your charm, continue to dream dreams, continue to support the white and blue, continue to be a part of the action!

I look forward to my new adventures however life unfolds. I will continue to cheer on the Blazer teams since I am staying in the neighborhood. I will always bleed blue for all things Trinity!

Twenty-Five Years of IB and Going Strong

by Rose Crnkovich, Director of Trinity’s IB Program For the past twenty-five years, Trinity students who have sought an academic challenge found it in the International Baccalaureate Program, a perfect complement to a Sinsinawa Dominican education. Along with our mission of educating the whole person, the IB curriculum integrates learning across the subject areas and encourages students to engage in the lifelong adventure of intellectual discovery, community service, and personal growth. Since the inception of the program in 1994, over 1,400 Trinity students have selected either the full diploma curriculum or certificate courses. Either way, they have experienced a rich approach incorporating several types of assessments including oral and written forms along with long-term projects, essays, labs, explorations, portfolios, and final exams. With thousands of schools around the world now offering the IB course of study, the word is out that this educational model is well suited for highly motivated students in a complex, global society. While college credits may be earned for successfully completing IB coursework, the benefits of studying on this intensive level include readiness for college and the work force through well-developed habits of mind. Independent and collaborative activities foster critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills that best prepare students for life in the ever-evolving 21st century.

Two visionary administrators, Sister MIchelle Germanson (President), Sr. Jeanne Bessette (Principal), and two dedicated coordinators, Mrs. Mary Sichz and Mrs. Gina Maras, my predeccessors, laid a secure founation for the program. Thanks to the effots of our many talented IB teachers and the hard work and determination of our aspiring students, IB has thrived at Trinity. It has been my honor working with our students for the past seventeen years as their program coordinator and IB English and Theory of Knowledge instructor. Within the last fifteen years, based on students’ interests, we have added new IB courses, including Dance, Film Studies, Mandarin, Math Higher Level, Psychology, Sports Exercise, and Health Science. It has been truly rewarding collaborating with colleagues and witnessing our students flourish from their experiences in IB courses that have developed their critical thinking and creative abilities. I am always thrilled to welcome back our IB alumnae at our annual winter gathering to celebrate their success and to hear about their ongoing achievements. To date, our pass rate for the IB diploma remains a steady 90% with over 70% of our student body enrolled in IB courses as either diploma or certificate students. In offering this dynamic program, we are proud to partner with IBO as we continue the tradition of academic excellence in the spirit of our Sinsinawa founders. Here’s to the next twenty-five years!

2019 International Baccalaureate CAS Congress

Trinity’s twenty-six senior International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates met over lunch with members of the school faculty, staff, administration, Board, alumnae, and parents to share parts of their CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) portfolio. For the past two years, these IB Diploma students have participated in over 11,500 hours of creativity, activity, and service experiences. The CAS Congress event is an opportunity for students to present their CAS portfolios to Trinity stakeholders and celebrate their achievements as IB Diploma candidates.

Illinois State Scholars

The College Board administers the National Hispanic Recognition Program which honors high achieving students of Hispanic descent. Each year over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and about 7,000 are recognized.

Congratulations to Hannah Gonzalez for earning this prestigious award. Hannah will be attending Connecticut College in the fall and will be studying political science.

This student is considered kind, caring, and thoughtful to others. This year’s recipient is Michelle Garcia. She will be attending the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign where she will study Sociology and political science.

P o s s e F o u n d a t i o n S c h o l a r s h ip The Posse Foundation is a national non-profit organization that identifies, recruits, and trains student leaders from high schools to form multicultural teams or “posses” of 10 scholars. These teams are then prepared, through an intensive eightmonth pre-college training program, for enrollment at highly selective universities to pursue their academic goals, help promote cross-cultural communication and become leaders on college campuses. Each Posse Scholar is awarded a full-tuition scholarship. This year Trinity High School is proud to have two students awarded the Posse Scholarship. Princeanna Gibson will be attending Pomona College and will study pre-health and Hannah Gonzalez will be attending Connecticut College and will study political science.

The QuestBridge National College Match is a college and scholarship application process that helps outstanding high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to the nation’s most selective colleges. College Match Scholarships, which are provided by participating colleges, cover the full cost of tuition, room and board. Karime Sanchez received this prestigious scholarship and will be attending Columbia University in the City of New York where she will study political science.

P r i n c ipa l ’ s L e a d e r s h ip A w a r d This award is given to an elected senior officer who embodies the legacy of the principals of Trinity High School. This senior makes the advancement and well-being of the Trinity community her first priority. She leads by example, she is reflective in her practice, she motivates others through her compassionate nature and she graces the community with her confident presence. This year’s recipient is Grace Winters. Grace will be attending St. Louis University in the fall.

Year The Athletic Department honors one outstanding senior athlete who meets the following criteria: • Strong academic record • Must participate in two sports • Recipient of GCAC all- conference award • Desire to pursue athletics in college • Must be a leader on and off the field • Exhibit good sportsmanship behavior

Chick Evans Scholar The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship is a full four year college scholarship for golf caddies. For over 85 years, the Western Golf Association has administered the Evans Scholarship. It is named in honor of the legendary amateur golfer Chick Evans, whose charitable legacy was to send deserving caddies to college. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are nominated by the sponsoring country club where they caddied. Applicants are evaluated and selected based on four criteria: strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need, and outstanding character. Congratulations to Bryanna Tapia on receiving the Chick Evans Scholarship. She will be attending Marquette University and will study sports therapy.

She made IHSA State appearances in both Cross Country and Track & Field. Alexis broke and set a new school record in the 800 meter.

Cindy Romano Scholarship

Sister Joel Scholarship

The Cindy Romano Scholarship is given to a junior in honor of Cindy Romano ‘74, teacher, Campus Minister and Director of Student Activities through the nineties until her death in March of 1999. The student to receive this scholarship is a person of integrity whose faith gives direction to her life, who integrates service as part of her life, is inclusive of others, and has a sense of joy about life. This scholarship is sponsored by the Romano Family and is chosen by the Campus Minister and the Theology Department. The recipient this year is Brianna Perez ‘20.

In memory of Sister Joel, O.P., a remarkable teacher who taught history at Trinity, a scholarship has been created. The Sister Joel Scholarship is awarded to a junior who has exemplary performance in history and submitted a written essay. This year’s recipient is Grainne McDonagh ‘20.

“ G i r l P o w e r ” S c h o l a r s h ip Miranda Santamaria ’22, Celeste Ortiz ’21 and Megan Kearns ‘20 are the recipients of the Norma Mocha Uscila “Girl Power” Scholarship.

This annual merit scholarship awards students for their assertiveness, activities, and abilities — their “girl power!”. Norma, a former Trinity employee and past parent, is memorialized by her husband Joe and three daughters: Michelle ’95, Kristen ’98 and Amy ’01, who established this scholarship. The Premier Dominican Scholarship is awarded to the student or students who place highest on the entrance exam. This year’s recipients is Callah Barnes from Grace Lutheran.

The Trinity High School Honors Scholarship is given to two students who have a superior score on the entrance exam, recommendation of principal and junior high teachers and submitted a written essay. This year’s recipients are Madeline Breunig from Bridgeport Catholic Academy and Abigail Justak from St. Francis Xavier.

The Sister Natalie-Sister Viviana Scholarship is awarded to students from our neighboring Dominican schools. The winners of these scholarships are in the top fifth of their graduating class, have displayed qualities of leadership, character, and service and have been recommended for this award by their principals and junior high teachers. This year’s recipients are: Marley Montgomery from St. Giles, and Maisy Keith from St. Luke.

The Catherine “Putt” Kelly-Brady Scholarship is awarded to the daughter or granddaughter of an alumna who will be in the Class of 2023 and is a graduate of a Catholic elementary school and shows academic promise. This year’s recipient is Maddie Halloran from St. Luke (daughter of Genie Watts Halloran ’88 and sister of Mary Bea Halloran ’16).

Board Leadership Awards are awarded to incoming freshmen by the Trinity Board of Directors for their academic and co-curricular leadership.

This scholarship is renewable. This year’s recipients are Linnea Drever from Ascension, Laura Murphy from St. Giles (daughter of Carole Schoeph Murphy ’83), Virginia Nashlund from St. Celestine, Jorey Reyes from Hauser Jr. High, Ciarra Richardson from St. Giles, Sophie Ritzler from Hauser Jr. High, Allison Ferenzi from St. Francis Borgia, Julia Valaika from St. Giles, Ruth Fangmann from St. Mary’s of Riverside.

L o u i s e B e r m a n O ’S u l l i v a n O s l i n S t u d e n t L e a d e r S c h o l a r s h ip A w a r d The very generous donor, Louise Berman was an involved Trinity student; a member of student council for three years, she was treasurer and president her junior and senior year. Louise was also an athlete and captain of the varsity basketball team, a true “T” Club girl! Because of her role as a woman leader, it was vitally important to Louise that this gift be used to inspire and help other young woman. She is particularly focused on scholarship support for those Trinity students that identify and perform as leaders, so they can grow and manifest their skills through a variety of leadership experiences while at Trinity and beyond. As a result of Louise’s generous gift to Trinity, three students each year will be granted this meritorious leader scholarship award, named in her honor. The 2019 awardees are: Alessandra Weber ’20, Mary Jacobs ’21 and Mikayla Aquino ‘22.

Blazer Captain Helps Lead Hockey Team to State Championship

Over a decade ago, a group of high school girls in the western suburbs, whose schools did not have hockey teams, joined together to form a collaborative team. Currently, students come from five different high schools and play under the Fenwick Girls’ Hockey name. The collaboration is really something special. The girls play various levels of hockey: some only play high school, some play travel, and some play AAA. They attend rivaling schools and play on rival club teams, but when they come to these games or practices, all that disappears.

When I joined the Fenwick Girls Hockey team during my sophomore year at Trinity, I wasn’t sure I would stick with it. But, luckily, playing for this team turned out to be one of the best parts of high school for me. During sophomore season, we were a decent team, finishing top five in the state, but not making it past the second round of playoffs. The next year, our team really began to make its mark. That season, we began to see that we had the talent and coaching to make it to state. We finished the regular season with only four losses. We were not only competitive with the top teams, but we were also a top team. Unfortunately, we lost the state semi-final game by one goal ... one goal away from playing at the United Center. I remember sitting in the locker room after that loss listening to our opponent in the room next to us screaming and celebrating wildly. Meanwhile, my teammates and I sat in fuming silence as we each thought of how the game could have gone differently. It was a heart breaking end to an otherwise standout season.

This set the stage for the 2018-2019 season. We were determined and ready to accomplish our goals. The New Trier girls were reigning state champions and their team was stacked as they not only cut players who didn’t play club, but also had completely cut their JV team at the beginning of the season to allow more focus for the varsity group. As the season wore on, our team, compiled with girls from Fenwick, Trinity , OPRF, York, and Guerin Prep, stood neck and neck with New Trier, with the series between the two teams ending 1-1-1. As Coach Mason Strom said, “Our only blemish on the season was our loss to New Trier.” Both teams made their ways through the semis for both the state and league final games.

Playing in the United Center was an experience I will never forget. But the massive stadium, the jumbotron, and the Blackhawks locker room were not even the best parts. The best part was the support we had while we were there. The students cheering for us stood right by our bench in a massive group. Additionally, I was so touched by the enthusiasm from Trinity. As the only Trinity student on the team, I did not expect much of a turnout. However, I was happily mistaken as many students and faculty, including the lacrosse program and our coaches, came to watch. It was a wonderful display of how Blazers support Blazers.

That support proved extremely important after we were down by two goals early in the first period. However, the team’s determination along with our positive attitude and fan energy kept us going. Erin Proctor, our captain, scored our first goal near the end of the first period, and then, Ellie Kaiser scored on a penalty shot to tie up the game in the second period. After Kaiser scored that goal, the momentum shifted and the game finally landed in our hands. Between the second and third periods, Mason told us that we didn’t need to play our best game, we only had to play smart and trust each other and we would be fine. Kaiser scored again in the third to win the game. This accomplishment, years in the making, was finally achieved, and it was a sweet victory.

The experience I had playing hockey for the Fenwick Girls Hockey team encompassed so much Blazer spirit. Coach Mason Strom’s dedication to the team and his upbeat attitude not only made the team a welcoming environment that girls wanted to be a part of, but also a strong hockey program. The three assistant coaches were also amazing. I am so proud that I represented Trinity, especially as an alternate captain, and I cannot wait to see what future Blazers will accomplish when they learn to put aside outside differences in the focus of a common goal.

Profile of an Alumna We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Alicia Zyburt who shared her trajectory from choosing Trinity to ultimately building her own company.

Trinity Named As One of the First All-Girls School in the U Trinity High School is proud to be chosen to be a part of the Amazon Future Engineer program. AFE is a comprehensive program that will inspire and educate our young women to pursue careers in computer science.

Amazon Future Engineer offers funding for computer science related courses and this initiative has allocated $50 million for programs that encourage and enlist underserved or underrepresented students in computer science. The Amazon Future Engineer program will begin at Trinity during the upcoming, 2019-2020 school year.

Since the recent launch of the program, the AFE Program is serving 300,000 students in 43 states. This new program will encourage Trinity students’ exploration of computer science to help advance the number of women pursuing careers in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) – countering gender disparity within these fields.

Trinity’s STEM courses offer students an array of advantages, from career readiness and hands-on experience to college preparatory–level classes, labs and creative exercises. Our classes are designed to appeal to

U.S. to Partner with Amazon Future Engineer Program all students, from those already interested in STEM-related fields, to those whose experience in the sciences and math has been less comprehensive or who find themselves previously uninterested in traditional science and math curricula.

Trinity STEM classes are hands-on, based in real-world experience, and engaging for students and teachers. The Trinity STEM courses set the highest standards for rigorous, focused and relevant study, and develops students’ innovative, collaborative, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Our coursework is hands-on and is an Activities-, Project-, Problem-Based comprehensive curriculum that is aligned with relevant national standards. Trinity STEM emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, innovation and real-world problem solving. The hands-on learning engages students on multiple levels, exposes them to areas of study that they may not otherwise pursue, and provides them with a foundation and proven path to post-secondary training and career success in STEM-related fields.

All Trinity STEM courses are designed to appeal to all students and help them make the critical connections between STEM principles and solving the real challenges in our communities and the world. Trinity STEM is complemented by Trinity’s International Baccalaureate curriculum that offers students a rigorous set of college-level courses in multiple areas of study.

Trinity’s College Preparatory curriculum includes a full complement of demanding courses that establish a solid educational foundation designed to deepen the desire for academic excellence and develop proficiency in essential skills students need to succeed in postsecondary education. Consequently, Trinity will begin membership in the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) in the 2019-2020 school year. Bal Dominique 2019

As Trinity confidently celebrated its 101st year at Bal Dominique 2019, it acknowledged with gratitude all of the opportunities made possible for students by our alumnae, benefactors and friends. It was a celebration of new beginnings with Trinity’s President Judith Schaefer O.P., greeting Trinity constituents commenting, “Trinity is so beloved by so many, and everyone is working together to continue the Dominican tradition of excellence.” And come together Trinity’s 288 Bal Dominique guests did, raising over $125,000 for Financial Assistance in the annual paddle raise.

Edmonds Woods , Esq. ’85 with the Leadership Award. Each of these alumnae represent the spirit of what Trinity High School has always inspired in its students: to be life-long learners, generous in actions and committed to serving Trinity and beyond.

Bal Dominique once again was a fabulous evening welcoming alumnae and reconnecting with classmates and friends.

Washington D.C. Gathering Eighteen Trinity alumnae gathered in Washington, DC on April 8th, 2019. The group met at the Renwick Museum and toured the new Connections exhibit. Always up for a fun time... the group loved posing for these pictures! The cherry blossoms were in full bloom which made the city look even more beautiful as the group walked from the museum to the luncheon at Hamilton restaurant. Barbara Rinella Book Dramatization and Luncheon It was another fabulous book dramatization, luncheon and boutique. For thirteen years Barbara has been entertaining our alumnae and friends on the Friday before Mother’s Day. Barbara chose two books about George and Barbara Bush and their family; Sisters First by Jenna Bush Harger and Barbara Pierce Bush and George and Barbara Bush, An American Love Story by Ellie LeBlond Sosa and Kelly Anne Chase to reenact. Mary Ann Wixted ’54 recently completed a series of three triptych paintings expressing her experience of making the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Rosemary Tracey Mango ’54 is retired and lives in Hilton Head, SC. Before retirement, she owned a day care center in Palatine, IL, and another in Hilton Head. Rosemary and husband Joseph have been married for 64 years and have three children, three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The Class of 1953 celebrated their 27th annual mini reunion in June with a gathering in Lake Geneva, WI. The two-day event was hosted by Pat Egan Day, Carol Lord-Evans and Joan Paschall Oriatti and included overnight accommodations in their Lake Geneva homes.

Present for all or part of the event were classmates Pat Egan Faley, Gigi Healy Conrad, Peg Kearin Carey, Carolyn Kelley Burke, Dee Kiley LeFevour, Barbara Koebel Burgman, Anne McDonald Weisskopf, Jane Mannion Sullivan, Pat Montalbano Hugar, Janet O’Connell McCue, Barbara O’Donnell Bright, Katie Perry, Darlene Ryan Walsh, M.G. Turner Enderle, Mary Lou Vainisi Alfini and Joan Willilams Bretwisch. All were especially thrilled to have Sister Michelle Germanson in attendance, and a great time was had by all! My classmates from 1960 also gathered recently for our summer lunch at Jim & Pete’s. We had 35 present, although the lighting for the photo wasn’t very good and identifying everyone is pretty difficult.

Among the attendees were two we haven’t seen for a while, Fran Caraher Collins and Helen Loos Coffen.

Mary Jean Hays Wuss ’74 writes with pride of her talented 28-yearold daughter, a singer and songwriter who plays piano and guitar. Mary Jean and husband Charlie live in Vero Beach, FL.

Congratulations to Ange Concepcion ’04, who received her Ph.D in educational leadership from Fordham University in May. Ange has been working in college student affairs since graduating from Northwestern University in 2010. She is currently assistant dean of campus life at Wagner College, Staten Island, NY.

Elizabeth Scarano Oplawski ’79 is an Employment Action Compliance Officer with the Cook Country Sheriff. Elizabeth and husband John live in DesPlaines, IL and welcome visits from their five children, three of whom were married in 2018.

1980s Tanya Edmonds Woods ’85 was recently appointed to the Loyola University School of Law’s Board of Governors and invited into the Knights of St. Peter Claver, Ladies Auxiliary Court 181, of St. Katherine Drexel parish. She writes, “Finally, we were successful in Springfield this past legislative session; the Westside Justice Center in conjunction with The Resurrection Project was awarded a $10M grant called Access to Justice Program to address the twin scourges of mass incarceration and mass deportation

1990s Nicolette Balkin Bernhardt ‘99 is a clinical psychologist at Northwestern/Marianjoy Rehab Hospital. She also works in Loyola’s Acute Rehab unit. She attributes her desire to become a psychologist came from making a brain out of bread in her Trinity psychology course! Nicolette and her husband Eric have two daughters and live in Bolingbrook. Nicolette loves volunteering at her daughter’s schools and being a girl scout leader. Wow, she is busy!

Cheryl D’Souza ’14 received her B.S. in Advertising from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a junior graphic designer at Shred 415 in Chicago and has her own design business. Cheryl lives in Forest Park, IL. Carolyn Judy ’16 is a junior at Loyola University Chicago, studying environment engineering under Dr. Gail Baura. This summer she is working at Bryan Construction in Denver, CO, as a summer intern.

Profile of an Alumna

An Early Pioneer ... A Trinity Woman of Strength and Kindness

Eighty-one years ago, a young Virginia Roman Thomas graduated from Trinity High School. It’s hard to imagine what life was like back in 1938, but when I had the opportunity to sit down with her last March, Ginny told me all about her life growing up in Riverside, and how she made her way to Trinity each day taking a combination of buses and street cars.

Trinity opened at 7574 W. Division in 1926 after moving from Rosary House down the block. It was only eight years after that move that Ginny began her freshman year, which is such an incredible thing to realize. She described River Forest as mostly open fields with sparse housing.

She remarked how the dedication of the Sinsinawa Sisters that taught her showed such a belief and commitment to the education of women. They understood and implemented a solid curriculum that included Latin and other subjects that were foresighted in building a strong foundation for the women they served. The Latin teacher at the time was the Principal, Sister Alexandrine, who was such a disciplinarian and such a great teacher.

She knew she didn’t want to become a nurse, so she took a two-year course to gain certification in becoming a medical technologist which gave her hands-on experience in a lab. She took a job at Mt Sinai Hospital working with Dr. Davidson, a blood pathologist who was the leading researcher on a condition called “blue baby.” Blue baby syndrome is a condition that occurs when an infant’s skin turns blue as a result of decreased hemoglobin in the baby’s blood, which at the time was fatal.

It helped her feel proud and secure in her faith, and it made her interested in what it means to be a Catholic, not just from a spiritual standpoint, but culturally. Sister Jose was the librarian at the time, and this was just as the US was on the precipice of war. She made certain that Trinity students had access to articles and journals that ensured they were informed on what was going on in the world.

Ginny remarked that the fact Trinity still stands alone as an all-female institution speaks to the commitment and prudence those early leaders and educators exemplified.

After graduation, Ginny chose DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana stating that she didn’t do well there and had difficulty focusing as a student. She transferred after her second year to Rosary to “gather her wits about her” while facing an academic challenge. She states, “thank goodness I had such a good backing from Trinity, because I was still

The inimitable Virginia (Ginny) Thomas peacefully completed her earthly journey on March 23, 2019. Some adjectives that come to mind to capture Ginny’s spirit are: elegant, thoughtful, generous, and delightful. Ginny was profoundly inquisitive and interested in everything and everyone. She was a scintillating conversationalist who took utter delight in asking probing questions to discover special details about those she interacted with, always leaving them amazed by how exciting and wonderful they really were. Ginny’s husband, Frank, preceded her in death 22 years ago. Their four children, Christine, Mark, Celeste, and Hilaire, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, will greatly miss this unique and precious woman who loved people first. She was a fixture at alumnae events for decades and remained connected to her classmates throughout her life, living just blocks away from Trinity for the last 63 years. While we mourn the loss of such an incredible woman, we thank her for paving the way for the thousands of young women who came through Trinity and had a profound experience thereafter. You will remain forever in our hearts and as an essential piece of our community, Ginny. Thank you for spending the afternoon with me.

Ladybug Scholarship Trinity High School is so proud and grateful to be the recipient of a generous gift from the estate of Valerie Layman Kelly ’43. Valerie was a proud alumna who remained connected to her beloved alma mater throughout her life. Her daughter shared how her mom had the unique and beautiful ability to celebrate an individual for what made them who they uniquely were. “It never mattered if you were one of her own or a total stranger, mom always saw the good in people and never failed to let them know it.” Valerie was one of those once-in-a-lifetime individuals who brought out the best in you because she saw the best in you. It is in that spirit that she named Trinity in her estate to set up a need-based scholarship so that future women, like her, can have a profound and transformative experience at Trinity. Affectionately named the “Ladybug Scholarship” by her family, it is a nod to Valerie’s deep affinity toward the creatures, and how she playfully signed her artwork with one.

Ladybugs are believed to be an embodiment of Lady Luck, bringing good fortune and prosperity along with it. As the insect leads a vibrant and colorful life, it influences you to experience the joys of living to the fullest. What beautiful symbolism for our first recipient, from the Class of 2023, who will begin her journey at Trinity this fall.
