Dear Trinity-Pawling Family and Friends,

When Gay and I arrived at Trinity-Pawling in 1975, we knew we had joined a remarkable school community, but we never imagined the depth of purpose, friendship, and growth that we would discover here at T-P. It has been my great honor to serve all of you and our School. And so it is with mixed emotions that I announce my intent to retire as Headmaster on June 30, 2015.

I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together over the last 39 years. For every challenge Trinity-Pawling has faced, the School has grown stronger and more focused in its mission. Today our students, faculty, curriculum, and campus all reflect the high expectations that are fundamental to a Trinity-Pawling education. Above all, we have grown into a school community that believes passionately in the power of character. As we focus on character, hold boys accountable, encourage them to strive forward, T-P transforms how each boy imagines himself and his future.

We help boys become the problem-solvers, role-models, leaders, citizens, and fathers our world depends upon. I cannot imagine a more important or rewarding responsibility.

Over the past few years, I have been increasingly aware that Trinity-Pawling is at a position of strength, ready to spring into the future. The time is ripe for a transition of leadership that will honor our past growth and claim an even stronger place in the realm of education. I know all of you will continue the work and uphold this School with dedication, generosity, and moral courage.

There are numerous people to thank who have helped advance the mission of Trinity-Pawling and on whom I have relied—none more instrumental than my wife, Gay. She has been a partner every step of the way: sympathizer with my chemistry students, dorm mother, gracious hostess at Gamage House, friend and fund raiser, and sounding board. From the Barracks to Barstow to Starr to Gamage House, our children—Heidi, Zandy, and Wendy—have matured into fine young parents in their own right reflecting so many of the values that Trinity-Pawling exudes.

It has been a privilege to serve with the astute and indomitable Board Presidents Liz Allen and Stretch Gardiner. Their unwavering support and sage guidance through every challenge gave me the confidence to move the School forward.

I am indebted to the many Trustees whose insight, steady leadership, and myriad acts of generosity helped TrinityPawling flourish. I was fortunate to learn from my predecessor Phil Smith whose courage and wisdom brought this School through the tumultuous ’70s and beyond. I am equally grateful for the thousands of alumni, parents, and other supporters who comprise our global family and who carry T-P’s legacy into the larger world.

And finally, I must thank the faculty, staff, and especially the boys of Trinity-Pawling for the greatest joys of my professional life. I thank them for their tireless daily efforts and for their enduring belief in each other and the School.

I have learned from and been inspired by all of them as often as I have led or taught.

Between now and June 30, 2015, I will be focused here at school and with the Board on setting the stage for new leadership. I look forward enthusiastically to what we will accomplish over the next 18 months. Thank you once again for the support you have shown to me and to Gay, our family, and to Trinity-Pawling School.

For nearly four decades, Trinity-Pawling has been blessed to have the leadership and dedication of Arch Smith as teacher, administrator, and, as of 1990, Headmaster. Today, with gratitude and admiration for his service, I write to inform you of Arch’s decision to retire as of June 30, 2015. We are truly losing much more, as Gay has stood at Arch’s side, a strong role-model for the boys and faculty, providing the heart and care for the T-P community.

Arch remains fully engaged in leading the School, and we are fortunate to have his continued wisdom at the helm for the next 18 months. During that time, we will have many opportunities to celebrate his and Gay’s contributions within our community.

We are fortunate to have had 45 years of consistent leadership as Phil Smith mentored Arch so effectively in Phil’s 20 years of headmastering. With Dr. Gamage and Matt Dann, these four men clearly shaped the School. Thanks to Arch’s steady vision, persuasive leadership, and tireless work ethic, Trinity-Pawling is stronger today in every aspect of its mission and programs. Our student body is more ambitious and diverse, and the campus is filled with pride. T-P boys have the opportunity to live, work, and play in one of the most picturesque settings of any New England boarding school. Over the decades, Arch has carefully recruited and built the T-P faculty to include some of the most skillful classroom teachers, dedicated coaches, and caring dormitory advisors within secondary school education. He has stewarded a dramatic transformation of the Trinity-Pawling campus, restoring the beauty and function of buildings such as Cluett while at the same time envisioning the potential behind new facilities such as the Arts Center and Scully Hall.

Throughout all this work, Arch led two successful capital campaigns that enabled T-P to implement these enhancements.

The endowment, which in the early ’80s totaled less than a few hundred thousand dollars, has grown to $37 million today under Arch’s careful strategic stewardship of the School’s resources. Thanks to Arch, T-P’s next Headmaster will inherit a school that is poised to take the next great leap forward. Anything we achieve will rest on the extraordinary foundation established by Arch Smith.

Choosing a new leader is the most critical responsibility of any board. Thanks to the timing of Arch’s announcement, we have an ample window for our search. Fortunately, Trustees Rob Ix ’83 and Erik Olstein ’86, P’11, P’14, P’17 have agreed to chair the search committee. The committee will be advised by Brigham Hill Consultancy, a preeminent executive search firm with a national base of non-profit clients. We will involve our faculty, alumni, parents, and students in the process beginning with on-campus meetings in February. And we welcome your thoughts on the direction of the School and the qualities of an ideal candidate by email to jcockrell@brighamhill.com. We will send periodic updates to the entire T-P community, and we have created a special section of the T-P website to provide information throughout the search process: www.trinitypawling.org.

From a personal perspective, I have admired Arch over the last 39 years for his integrity, kindness, and humor. Like so many of us, I have been inspired by how well he knows and cares for T-P boys, calling each by name; attending countless games, concerts, and theatrical events; always ready to offer comfort, admonishment, or advice that is appropriate to the moment. I have been richly rewarded by the strong working relationship we have shared over the years. This is a natural transition in the life of the School, and I am confident all will share with us our excitement in the future. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Arch personally for his legacy that has strengthened Trinity-Pawling immeasurably.
