NEWS BRIEFS San Antonio A man and woman were found dead in a house in Schertz, following a response to two young girls running in the 900 block of FM 78.

A neighbor who followed the girls contacted the officers who were then led to the residence in the 400 block of River Road. The Schertz Police Department is currently investigating the cause of death and the relationship of the girls to the man and woman. mysa.com

National Jared Fogle, former Subway spokesperson and pitchman, is expected to plead guilty to possession of child pornography charges. The charges follow two months after Russell C. Taylor, the executive director of the Jared Foundation, was arrested on federal child pornography charges. When contacted Taylor’s attorney declined to comment on the development and Subway tweeted that it no longer has a relationship with Fogle on August 18, 2015.

International Khaled al-As’ad was executed on Tuesday by ISIS after refusing to pledge allegiance to ISIS and for refusing to reveal the location of archaeological treasures the terrorists thought they were in the city of Palmyra, Syria. Al-As’ad, 82 was an antiquities expert in Syria and university professor, as well the former general manager for antiquities and museums in Palmyra.

This fall the university will be expanding B’Low Optimal, an alcohol intervention program that allows students who are caught drinking the option of taking a breathalyzer test to determine if their blood alcohol concentration is within the “optimal buzz” range.

B’Low Optimal is an expansion of the Optimal Buzz initiative created by Richard Reams, the associate director of counseling services. The initiative sanctioned an “optimal buzz” level for students between within .04 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to .06 BAC. B’Low Optimal encourages student to drink below .08 BAC, in order to avoid a hearing with the Student Conduct Board.

The program began in 2013 by David Tuttle, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, in an effort to curb binge drinking.

“The B’Low Optimal program is another way to encourage students who drink responsibly to blow into a breathalyzer. If they’re within that range of .08 and below they won’t go to the Conduct Board,” Tuttle said.

The informational video states that “About two-thirds of Trinity first years drink and by graduation about 95% of Trinity seniors drink at least occasionally.”

Tuttle explains that Trinity recognizes that a percentage of students drink, and hopes to encourage safe drinking.

“Nothing drives me crazy more than when students say, ‘I know you all think that we shouldn’t drink.’ That isn’t even our philosophy,” Tuttle said. “We know that students drink and we want to keep our students safe. We want to teach them to drink in a responsible way.”

The B’Low Optimal program was first targeted at first year students during its pilot stage but has since expanded campus-wide according to Melissa Flowers, director of residential life.

There are other alcohol-related rules that students should take into account when drinking, according to Flowers.

“There are a few caveats—the person whose room it is, the person whose alcohol it is, and if it’s hard alcohol, then it’s still a violation. Beer and wine are okay on this campus. Liquor, even if students are 21, is not allowed,” Flowers said.

Flowers describes other factors that students should keep in mind.

“Students can request to blow at any time, but if they are noticeably intoxicated, stumbling or slurring their words, then they are not permissible to participate.”

The Student Conduct Board is utilizing funds from alcohol or drug fines for the B’Low Optimal program, according to Tuttle.

“We’re giving out swag. So first year students are getting shirts, all the sophomores are getting cups that shows what a drink is and all the juniors and seniors are getting bottle openers,” Tuttle said.

A total of $9,700 has been spent on B’Low Optimal according to Tuttle. There are a total of eight breathalyzers across the campus that cost approximately $200 each, according to an assessment summary of B’Low Optimal written

Students and parents coming to the university for the first time this semester will receive information on many services offered to students. This year brings new initiatives to improve the experiences of students, as well as offerings from existing departments.

“The goal in the big picture is to help enhance the student experience as a whole, especially support for students out of the classroom,” said wellness coordinator Katherine Hewitt.

Hewitt fulfills a new position that falls within Counseling Services this year, that of wellness coordinator.

The position came about as a part of the strategic plan and aims to improve student performance by aiding student health, wellness and safety. Leading into the semester, Hewitt has spent some time assessing programs offered on campus and learning what can be done to improve them.

One event she will be taking part in during new student orientation, for example, will inform students about sleep, physical activity and nutrition

alongside coordinator of health services Jackie Bevilacqua. She will continue to work with existing programs such as Pizza and Pleasure and departments such as Health Services and Athletics throughout the year in order to inform students and others of how to improve their lives and academic performance.

“We want students to know [the] services we offer are here, and that they are free and confidential,” associate director of counseling services Richard Reams said. “We have walk-in hours, and students are welcome to call and make an appointment as well.”

Counseling services offers counseling to students by appointment or during walk-in hours on Mondays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Halsell Center. The most common concerns addressed with students by counseling services include depression, stress and anxiety. Reams encouraged students to be aware of how they are adjusting to the challenges of being a new student at Trinity and to come to counseling services should they want to speak with a counselor regarding this adjustment. He also encourages students to be aware of whether fellow first years are withdrawn or depressed and said that if students should feel more comfortable waiting with a friend in the waiting room, that coming in together is encouraged. Reams also noted that this year, for the first time, counseling services will employ a psychiatrist on a limited basis.

Counseling services offers a screening for depression once each semester.

“I deal with non-academic issues, whether [they are] personal, social, emotional or family related,” said David Tuttle, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “If students feel they are stuck or having trouble, [they can] get in touch with me.”

Tuttle’s office is located on the second floor of the Coates University Center and can be accessed from the stairs within Coates as well as the stairwell located by Einstein Bros. Bagels. Tuttle invites students to contact him when addressing the above issues, as well as when they are having trouble navigating bureaucracy

on campus. Tuttle also brings his dog Sochi to campus in the cooler months to allow students to interact with her. Students may do so when there is a sign beside the stairs next to Einstein Bros. Bagels noting that Sochi is on campus that day. The dean is also present on campus at many events and has regular contact with students and parents.

“We have two residential life coordinators in the first year area, one in the sophomore college and one in the upperclassman area who assist the student staff members [and can be reached in the office] from 9 [a.m.] to 5 p.m,” said Melissa Flowers, director of residential life.

The residential life office is located in the Witt Reception Center and can be contacted

at extension 7219. First-year students are encouraged to interact with their residential assistants, who are trained by the residential life office and have access to many resources on campus that they can connect students with.

The Student Involvement office is located in the Coates University West Wing and can be reached at extension 7547. The office is home to several coordinators and other individuals involved with student life and organizations on campus. The office is open to students and small student groups and hosts Milk and Cookies with Student Involvement every Thursday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

North hall renovations completed in June Residence hall construction finished in time for summer classes and fall semester

Since January, North Hall has been under construction in Trinity’s 20-year cycle for updating residence halls. Students have already begun to take up residence in the hall, and even more will arrive in the coming weeks to move into the newly remodeled space.

“We really wanted more options for upperclass students. So, we provided single sleeping rooms because that’s what the students told us, through focus groups that we had done, was most important to them,” said Wanda Olson, assistant director of residential life.

The redesign features separate living spaces for each of the two residents that are connected to a shared living space, which many students feel is the big selling point of North.

“The difference between this and Lightner is that in Lightner, four people are sharing a common living space, whereas in North only two people share a common room space. It provides more privacy,” said Bria Woods, a hall mentor for North Hall.

Residential Life wanted the focus of living in North to be privacy for its residents while still allowing for socialization in common living areas.

“I love that the students can personalize their own space,” Olson said. “They have the private space that they requested.

They can personalize their own bedroom for themselves and they still have a living room that they share with one roommate.

I like that they have both the public area with their roommate and then also a private bedroom. And they still have a suite.”

After five months of construction, the renovations of North Hall were completed in June. Those who have moved in are already enjoying the new space.

“It has gone through the updates that it so desperately needed,” Woods said.

Many students who had seen North Hall before the renovations are excited about the updates. In addition to new furniture, the building has been aesthetically remodeled as well.

“It’s so much nicer. We actually got all new furniture, so that was nice too. The carpets are nice and new. It doesn’t smell.

And it’s actually brighter. It’s not as dark in the hallway,” said Sarah Hernandez, a senior living in North.

After the renovation of North, the next residence hall to go under construction is likely to be South. The decision has yet to be made but will probably be announced in the coming year.

“It is still up in the air,” Olson said. “That has to go through the board of Trustees, who approves big renovation projects like that. I know we are starting conversations or beginning talks about South and what we would want in South.”

SGA leaders plan programs for the year ahead B-Cycle finally to come to Trinity after months of hard planning

With a new academic year ahead, the Student Government Association has several big changes for the campus.

According to Jamie Thompson, the director of Student Involvement, the first initiative that SGA is planning for is the installation of B-Cycle on campus.

“The B-Cycle initiative will be a fantastic partnership with the city. It has been put on hold because of elements within the city,” Thompson said. “SGA made a commitment and approved the use of funds for that purpose. They’re still interested and supportive of that program.”

Sean McCutchen, president of SGA, explains that the installation of the B-Cycle stations should be completed in the fall.

“B-Cycle should be on campus August or September.

This was an issue started before my tenure. It’s been ongoing for over a year now,” McCutchen said.

In 2014, SGA had discussed the potential of eliminating the residency requirement for juniors. In response to this discussion, SGA sent out a survey regarding the third year residency requirement, which did not garner much participation from students according to David Tuttle, associate vice president and dean of students.

“The lack of response on the student survey sent a bit of a signal to the board and the administration, that despite some anecdotal evidence, people really didn’t care that much about the issue,” Tuttle said. “Through hearing from Student Government, it’s reinforced for them that this is the ethos of our campus that we’ll have a three year residency requirement. I would say that the issue is dead.”

McCutchen plans for SGA to improve the residential experience for juniors.

“I think Trinity should work towards increasing the value of the campus. For example, North Hall renovations are a very good step in that direction,” McCutchen said. “The removal of the third year requirement was never a set goal but it was one of the options on the table. So that juniors have the experience they deserve.”

Additionally, McCutchen hopes to continue the conversation regarding a smoke-free campus.

“To be frank, I expect Trinity to be smoke-free in a few years anyways, just because that’s the trend of colleges around the nation,” McCutchen said. “That’s something we’ll probably revisit, because the smoking survey showed enough interest in the topic.”

SGA intends to continue pursuing more issues based on campus climate within the coming year, according to Thompson.

“The role of SGA,” Thompson said, “is to be an advocate for the student voice on campus and advocate for their needs.”

New dining services offered Coates and Mabee Dining Hall offer revamped selections for students this year

Mabee Dining Hall and the Coates Commons Food Court have recently received updates as part of a plan to add new dining options for students that was laid out five years ago. There is also a smartphone application available from Aramark, titled CampusDish, which allows students to view the nutritional value of meals served in Mabee Dining Hall.

Letters were distributed to parents via the group email list ParentTalk in order to explain some of the changes made within Mabee Dining Hall in response to issues that were consistently raised by students and parents. The letter covers a number of subjects and will be distributed to students once the school year has begun. “[Aramark] will pilot a Ninja blender juice [and] smoothie station at the vegan station during breakfast,” the letter read.

for Trinity University Dining, noted that the blender option will be available to students on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings for breakfast only. In addition to the blenders being added to Mabee, there will be more signage in order to alert students of their options at the stir fry bar and other locations.

Aramark’s Healthy for Life program has several new health and wellness events in store in order to teach students more about eating healthy and how to make healthy meals.

There will be more themed and ethnic meals offered in the dining hall as well.

Mabee Dining Hall is open during the semester Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m, Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m, and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We have had a dialogue all summer long [asking] how we can be more responsive to students’ issues with food,” said David Tuttle, associate vice president and dean of students. “We want to make sure they have fresh, quality [options].”

The Coates Commons Food Court has been renovated this year, with the introduction of Freshii in place of Montague’s Deli and removal of the drink station in the center of the Commons. Freshii will offer a number of breakfast options, as well as salads

and wraps, bowls with rice or quinoa and other ingredients, soups, burritos, smoothies, juices and frozen yogurt with toppings. Tuttle noted that Freshii has been very popular at other campuses around the United States, and that along with Taco Taco and Einstein Bros. Bagels, it will offer more variety to students. The Commons Food Court is open during the semester Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hours for Taco Taco, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Freshii can be located on the Trinity University Campus Dish website.

The Skyline Dining Room will also be updating their menu this year with the addition of several sandwich options, each named after university professors.

“We thought [the new Skyline sandwich titles] would be a fun way to recognize our super star professors on campus,” Tuttle said. “[The professors] did agree to have their names included, of course.”

The Skyline Room will offer five sandwiches with titles that make nods to university professors in a variety of departments, as well as one flatbread with such a title. Skyline is located on the second floor of the Coates University Center and is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Car crash shakes Trinity community In the spring of 2015 five first—year Trinity students were involved in a fatal car crash. One student was killed, and the other four students in the vehicle were injured. Memorial services were held for Corey Byrnes, who’s family and friends were in attendance.

All those who sustained injuries were released from the hospital and returned home.

Passing of Trinity professor on campus Dr. Michael Kearl professor of sociology and anthropology passed due to an abrupt heart attack while walking through campus. Kearl began at Trinity in 1977 and chaired the department of sociology from 2001 to 2006.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Trinity’s Greek Council revoked the Pikes’ charter with the school.

The fraternity was found guilty of violating the suspension they were given in 2014 for hosting unauthorized parties, which restricted them from taking a pledge class. The organization no longer has a charter with Trinity University but is a recognized group by the national organization. In a recent email to the campus, Michael Fischer vice president for faculty and student affairs stated that affiliation with the organization could result in the expulsion of any students associated with the group.

A warm welcome to the Class of 2019

Let me be the first to welcome you to campus. Okay, okay, maybe I’m not the first, but besides Scuba Steve, I’m definitely the most enthusiastic!

WELCOME! See. It’s in all caps with an exclamation point.

As I prepared for this article, it dawned on me that it was 24 years ago that I first stepped foot on the skyline campus. Much has happened since 1991, and it is with that perspective I offer some thoughts on how to get the most from your Trinity experience.

My first year on campus consisted of Metallica’s Black album, Pearl Jam’s Ten, Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger, Guns ‘n Roses Use Your Illusion, Nirvana’s Nevermind, REM’s Out of Time, and A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory all came out. The year also bore witness to amazing albums by Public Enemy, Monster Magnet, The Melvins, Natalie Cole, and TuPac. Holy cow!

Sorry, I got off topic. I am known to do that on occasion. This isn’t an article about how great it was to be a Trinity student in 1991. No, this is an article about how great it is to be a Trinity student in 2015!

This is truly an amazing time to be at Trinity.

We have a new President, the exciting JACOB TINGLE P a t h w a y s #AskTingleTU curriculum and the launch of three new centers. The first is the Center for Student Success, which will help students thrive academically and socially. Secondly, the Center for International Citizenship seeks to unite academic programs, study abroad, cultural events, and support for international students, in order to cultivate global awareness, understanding, and action. Finally, there is the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Success (CELCS), a portal between our residential campus and the diverse, rich world that exists just off campus. The CELCS’ mission is to empower students to connect their Trinity experience with the broader world and to better prepare them for life after graduation. It is with that aim that I encourage you to get engaged with your community.

San Antonio has one of the biggest

Martin Luther King Jr. Day marches in the country, and Trinity students consistently have a big presence in the event. Find a friend to go with, and take part in something that’s bigger than any of us. Make time to volunteer. Part of personal growth is recognizing that the entire world doesn’t revolve around you. This is, of course, one of the main objectives of a college education.

The city of San Antonio is most certainly a #CityOnTheRise, evidenced by Geekdom, Tech Bloc, and SA Works. Don’t take my word for it, go discover for yourself: ride a bike down the Mission River Reach, explore King William, and utilize the student discounts at the San Antonio Museum of Art and the McNay. Go see a professional sports team play.

Everyone knows about the Spurs, but the AHL’s Rampage, NASL’s Scorpions, WNBA’s Stars, and Texas League’s Missions are all here too.

And if you can be here during Winter Break, you’d be CRAZY to miss the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Don’t forget to take advantage of all the opportunities campus has to offer. If you need a place to get away from it all, a place to let off steam

or a place to regroup before or after a tough assignment stop, then stop by the Bell Center. In addition to the exercise equipment, open gym space and weight room, the Bell Center is also the home to the intramural (IM) office. Your student fees pay for the operation of the IM program, so get your money’s worth and sign up to play a sport. Be sure to check out the outdoor recreation (O-REC) program too. You can sign up for one of the student-led trips, or you can check out equipment and blaze your own trail.

Of course there are other decisions you make on a daily basis, many of which have a significant impact on your Trinity experience. Take full advantage of your classes. As an alumnus of Trinity’s communication and religion departments, I can tell you that the critical thinking and communication skills you develop at Trinity will serve you well. But like everything else, the choice is yours.

You’ll get out of your classes what you put into them. Another tip I wish I’d known back in August 1991: go to office hours. Get to know your professors. We are here because we WANT to interact with students. Help us help you.

Stop by the CELCS and learn about community service opportunities and internships, and while you’re there make sure you set up a time to meet with a Career Services staff member. The amazing staff has much to offer, and it is never too early to start thinking about your future. Take that risk and pursue your passion. You never know where it might lead.

College life is filled with choices YOU get to make. And if your choices lead you to a Metallica concert where you happen to bump into a certain faculty columnist, let’s just agree now to pretend it never happened. But seriously, while at Trinity you’ll make some good decisions and some bad decisions; either way, those choices should help you grow to become a more complete person.

Dip your toes in the water, and uncover the greatness of a life welllived!

Back from across the pond It really doesn’t feel like three months since I was last panicking about a Trinitonian deadline and struggling to CALLUM SQUIRES write an article that I’m fully happy with.

British Invasion Summer flies by.

This year, I didn’t have to suffer the outright depression that the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil gave me last year (following England’s abysmal performances), but there was plenty more to keep me occupied and, thankfully, happier.

Flying home is always a weird feeling for me. 5,000 miles is actually a really long way to travel to and from university, so it’s exciting when I get the biannual chance to visit home. My parents are normally excited to have me back, at least until after a week I haven’t unpacked and my mum wants me to start doing work around the house again.

But being far away from my family and friends really makes you value them all the more. You take them for granted when you see them everyday, so the rarity of interaction makes it all the more special when you do get to see them. The same could be said for my hometown. London is remarkable in so many

ways. Growing up there I didn’t realise just how lucky I was. I’m fortunate that I get to go back there at the two best times of the year: Christmas and the summer. Seeing a winter’s Oxford Street all lit up in lights is beautiful and, on the rare occasion we find a sunny day during “summer” in July, Hyde Park is breathtaking in its simplicity and elegance. I’m going a little overboard with the descriptions, but it really is a sight to behold.

But anyway, as I fight to stop myself getting sidetracked and attempt to stay under my (loosely enforced) word limit from my (lovely) editors, summer for me was pretty actionpacked. I was back bartending at my local pub, where I’d worked during my gap year before coming to Trinity and every holiday period since. Working in a bar type atmosphere will really teach you a lot about yourself and other people around you. I encourage everyone to try it at least once. I knew I was back in ignorant, snobbish surroundings when one customer was overheard proclaiming that he “was actually racist” because he “hates Americans”. A flawed statement on many levels that wound me up quite a bit. I also did my best to catch up with friends and family and spent much of the summer training hard for the upcoming soccer season. More on that later.

The highlights of my summer were my trips away. Vacations, as you strange folk like to call them, are always the thing I look forward to the most. Holidays in Europe are pretty easy for me, so spending a week in Spain on our friend’s award winning olive oil farm doesn’t feel like a particularly exotic trip for me.

However, the paradise that is the little village of Marça, about 2 hours outside Barcelona, is nothing short of a paradise. I also got to spend a week exploring a new country I’d never seen before. I spent a week in Ohrid, in the former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. “Why?” I’m imagining you asking. Good question.

Because the flights were cheap is my honest answer. My friends and I paid about $60 for return flights to Macedonia and almost definitely ended up spending less money on holiday than we would have had we stayed in London for the week. That’s how you do a holiday. The country itself was gorgeous with surprisingly good (and incredibly cheap) food and extremely friendly locals.

Whilst in Macedonia, the Women’s World Cup came to its conclusion. This was actually a really big deal all across the globe with record numbers of fans tuning in on TV and attending the games in the Canadian host cities. It was great to see the world finally start to give women’s soccer the admiration

and respect it deserves. Though of course it left me disappointed, with England succumbing in the most English way possible (a heartbreaking last-minute own goal in the semi-final against Japan) and the tournament being eventually won by... er... hold on, I’m blanking on the name... they’re big... they like guns... oh. It’s America. You guys. Well done.

Grrrr.

So that’s what happened in my summer.

Not that any of you asked or wanted to know what I did, but that’s what you got so there we are. I promise to find more interesting things to write about as the semester progresses. I guess all that’s left to say is it’s great to see so many old faces back on campus as well as so many bright new ones who don’t quite understand what everything here is yet. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. It’s gonna be a good year. Hope to see you all on Saturday at the Tiger Sports Pep Rally and the following men’s and women’s soccer scrimmages against Monterrey Tech. It’s gonna be fun. If you need me, you’ll find me camped out on the baseball field excitedly counting down the minutes till T-Pain’s welcome week concert starts. I’ll see you in the front row.

A place I can easily call my home For the past couple of years, I have debated in my head about which city COURTNEY JUSTUS to call home.

This debate Turquoise Verses is greatly influenced by the fact that I have most of my loved ones split up between two very different countries. There’s also the fact that I’ve met people from all over the world, and being with them makes me feel like I am home, even when I’m thousands of miles from where I am currently living. Whenever people ask the questions, “Where are you from?” and “Where is your hometown?”, I am often unsure of what to say.

One October a few years ago, I was on a budget trip to Europe with a tour group that included people from all over the world.

One night, we stayed in these little cabins on the outskirts of Venice. I shared a cabin with three girls, two from Canada and one from Nigeria. In the little time we actually spent inside, we organized our suitcases and made unsuccessful attempts to access the Wi-Fi, all while listening to music and talking about anything and everything. In those moments, I felt closer to those girls than I did to schoolmates I had known for years. It felt like I had known these tour group girls for years even though we were only together for ten days. While I can’t recall the name of the place where we stayed that night or even the area in

which it was located, I can tell you that it felt more like home than I could ever explain in words.

Between two-hour Skype sessions with friends from abroad, I wonder whether a place I stayed for less than twenty-four hours can actually be home. Not just in the sense of memories and the past, but also now, in the sense of the present, knowing that I have a university, and a city, to stay at for at least the next four years and consider home. I wonder how many other people ask themselves these sorts of questions.

I realized a few days ago that Trinity doesn’t just feel like home: it is home. It has been home since the moment I first visited campus.

The impact of my experiences here will outlast my memory of them.

And that same thing happened in all the cities I have lived in and visited, even just for a few hours.

It is a firm belief of mine that our experiences can continue to affect us greatly, even when we have forgotten large parts of them. They live on beyond the reaches of our minds and hands like an infinite ripple.

As you go out into the world and live your life, I hope you can think of home that way too. I hope you can find home in even the briefest of experiences and that these live on even beyond your memory of them. I hope you find home here and in other places.

Your first day and beyond My recollection of move-in day begins with a TUPD officer setting the waiting line of cars in motion toward the mass of jubilant bodies in maroon shirts. I watched as the seemingly chaotic swarm surrounded the first car. The contents inside were unloaded and brought piece by piece into the unfamiliar building now adjacent to me. They then turned their friendly frenzy on my car and I could only observe as my bedding, boxes and books were swiftly lifted and hastily carried towards the room where I was to spend the next year of my life. The memory of a lightly-darkened sky that covered those morning hours presents a gray and hazy portrait that would mimic my mind as it attempted to simultaneously take in my new surroundings while being bombarded with fantastic imaginings of what may unfold in that year to come. I was a new student.

Now as a third-year student my education continues in the academic fields of political science and English, but the equally important subject of personal exploration continues as well. The lessons taught and work required for success in that field are as exciting, time consuming and difficult as the former. They comprise the education I receive for my individuality.

It’s fair to assume that almost every undergraduate student here came for a formal education, whether or not they were excited for it. Through a hefty combination of lectures, papers and tests, that education is provided. These academic elements are intended to endow students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world they occupy. Still, much of learning

happens outside of the classroom.

Beyond the knowledge that is acquired in the academic realm of university life, there JEFF SULLIVAN is the knowledge My Perspective acquired through personal experience, deliberation, decision and experience. These lessons are taught through moments with fellow students who’ve arrived from near and far, by new surroundings you inhabit and from those spontaneous opportunities that tend to arise both when you want them and when you do not.

I believe that exploration is a feat to be undertaken in the years you have here.

Sometimes it will be enticing and other times more it’ll appear more frightening.

My first year advisor, Peter Balbert professor of English, imparted words that reverberate in my memory, and I paraphrase: “It is here where you will experience the highest highs and lowest lows.” In my experience, his words have proven pleasantly and dreadfully true. The only advice I’ll impart now is for new students to consider approaching all aspects of their experiences at Trinity with openness and objectivity that allows for exploration, learning and growth. After summer months of agonizing anticipation, heartfelt goodbyes and one last look at your now-barren bedroom back home, you’ve arrived at Trinity.

Symbols in their essence are powerless and only carry various meanings in the various minds that gaze upon them. The Confederate flag doesn’t create or inspire hate–on the contrary, those who are already plagued with hatred, racism and contempt associate themselves with the flag as a matter of ideological symbolism. And if it’s not the Confederate flag, then it’s usually the Swastika (which, ironically enough, was the symbol of peace in numerous cultures prior to Nazism), the hammer and sickle or another symbol that is found appealing or convenient.

The ideology always comes first, the symbol and design always come second, and they are merely the cover art for a book of pre-existing hatred that may have nothing to do with the original meaning of the symbol.

Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a person by their flag.

EDITORAL

The ever-changing constant First and foremost, welcome new students, parents and faculty to Trinity University. Our staff here is delighted by the opportunity to share, hear and explore your stories throughout your time with the university. Trinity is a place to grow intellectually, discover your true passions and become a better person overall. But we aren’t here to talk about YOUR personal growth or academic endeavors, however interesting we’re sure they are. We thought about writing this editorial to first years (the politically-correct term, which we’ll be sure to address at a future date) about their time here and the greatness of our school but figured everyone is already a bit tired of that spiel. So instead, we’ll take this time to address something different. After meeting with Trinity’s new president, Danny Anderson, who was gracious enough to lend his time and ear to our staff, a few of his words struck us about the nature of our campus and the nature of our lives—“the only constant is change.” Trinity, and its community in San Antonio, is entering into a new era, with a new curriculum, a new nineteenth president in Anderson and maybe most importantly a brand new look for the Trinitonian. Try to contain your excitement. We have spent our past weeks staring at numerous fonts, countless color palettes and dismally bright computer screens

until finally we reached a cohesive and complete design, not only for our print paper but also for our online site. I say all this because, for first years, it really isn’t anything new. You’ll see Anderson and not think, like the rest of us, of his counterpart in Ahlburg; you’ll see the residence halls and not the fences, dirt and concrete that once occupied their space; you’ll see our paper and it’ll be all you know. To you as first years, there is no other Trinitonian, it simply is how it exists in that moment.

And there isn’t anything wrong with that. Come a year or two, you’ll experience changes as well.

Students often complain about how the campus is “always changing when I leave” which is inherently true, only because everything is always changing. Such a revelation is equally exciting and intimidating at first. As new students, the transition here to Trinity and the college life is already a huge change from your prior lives. Stepping into a campus that itself is experiencing constant change can leave you gasping for even more air. But in the struggle we often find beauty, whether it be in a progressive and exciting new president or in a beautifully redesigned newspaper.

Embracing the changes, no matter how overwhelming they may be, allows those daring individuals to enjoy the ride. We aren’t saying you

should simply accept the change at face value and cast away any speculation; in fact you can hate our new paper design or find yourself wishing for a new president. But you simply shouldn’t be afraid.

Doing so is not only ignorant and foolish but hinders you from what college, and Trinity in particular, is all about. You may come here with certain perceptions or beliefs about everything from Greek culture to religion, and Trinity as well as your classmates will often challenge those values. Through hearing and filtering it all, amidst the changing community, academics and personalities, your ideas may be further cemented or they may be changed. Either way, being open to the vastly different, contrasting and often polarizing issues and ideas here on campus will allow for what we all really wish to accomplish in our time here—personal growth into a better person. And despite our earlier convictions it looks like we’ve managed to start talking about personal growth somehow. It happens. We’ll work on it. But we digress—change, by its very nature, will always be constant. You’ll just have to get used to it.

At the end of the day we’re proud to be a part of such change, even if just a tiny bit. Be open to everything, have fun and study hard. Y We can promise that you’ll love it here.

As the chaos of moving in starts to wind down and as classes and university events begin, you might find yourself lost on your new school grounds. Opening a campus map is usually a reliable way to figure out where you’re going, but there are several spots on campus you should know about that a map might not help you find.

The POD:

On the days when the idea of eating another meal in the dining hall just doesn’t sound very appealing, students can find a variety of dining options at the POD, located directly next to Mabee Dining Hall. With choices ranging from energy drinks and favorite snacks to made-to-order meals, the POD is a necessary source of food and drink for the hungry college student. The POD Express, a smaller version of this grocery, can be found on the second floor of the Center for the Sciences and Innovation.

Whether you’re anticipating a letter from home or a care package from your parents, at some point

you’ll have to pick up your mail.

Trinity has two locations to pick up two different types of mail.

For letters or paper mail, students should go to the mailroom, located in the Tiger’s Den. For packages, students should go to the package processing center located directly next to the Prassel parking garage.

Upper campus and lower campus:

Trinity’s campus is divided by the dreaded cardiac hill, and two general terms are applied to the split campus. Upper campus refers to the part of the school located at the top of cardiac hill; it is generally the location of academic buildings, while lower campus is the part of campus located at the bottom of cardiac hill. It is the

area containing residence halls and Mabee Dining Hall.

Coates Library:

Where else are you going to spend late nights working on that paper you totally started the night before it was due? Located on upper campus next to CSI is the university library. Stocked with thousands of books on all subjects imaginable, the library is an ideal, quiet place to be diligent with schoolwork. The library has several amenities to offer productive students, including a coffee shop, writing center and study rooms you can reserve to have maximum focus while you work. Coates library has four floors, each with a different appropriate noise level.

Coates offers several other dining options in the commons, located on the first floor of the building, on the days when you’re not craving Mabee; these options include Einstein Bros. Bagels, Taco Taco Café and now Freshii, among other choices.

You’ll have to use those meal swipes at some point! The infamous Mabee Dining Hall is located directly next to the Witt Center near all of the first year residence halls. Make sure you treat yourself to their chocolate chip cookies as a reward for getting through your first week of college!

PULSE REPORTER It is that time of year again. Getting ready to move back into your dorm in college—or move in for the first time if you’re a first year. You indiscriminately shove everything you own into suitcases and boxes and commence the trek up to campus.

Once you start unpacking, however, you soon realize that though you certainly brought your high school football jersey, you left your rain boots behind. Perhaps you brought your hairspray, but completely forgot about shampoo. Here are a few things

students consider essential to dorm room survival.

“A memory foam mattress cover! It makes your bed softer,” said Hannah Rusher, sophomore.

While you’re at it, remember to bring bedding and pillows. The residence halls’ air conditioners are permanently cranked up in this heat, and it’s bound to get cold at night!

Speaking of the Texas heat, junior Anthony Sanchez has a vital packing list item for everyone.

“Deodorant! That’s number one in my list. We’re in South Texas and you’re gonna sweat. Also, Febreze.

Bring a lamp; you don’t want your lights on all the time, especially if your roommate is sleeping and you need to get stuff done. Get duct tape. Always have duct tape. Nothing can go wrong with it.”

On the topic of personal hygiene items, the most important ones — besides deodorant—include shampoo, conditioner, body wash or soap, hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and

to have at hand.

Insects thrive in this warm and humid weather.

For those of you prone to get stung by bugs, sophomore Inka Boehm has a suggestion.

“Bug spray. I don’t know if this is just me, but I get bitten by a bug like every two minutes!”

Aside from all the utilitarian items one needs for college life, there is one very important thing that we must not forget, says senior Bria Woods.

“Memories from home. It’s nice to have a reminder of where you came from in your new home, so bring comfort items. For me, it’s my favorite stuffed animal.”

The “Trinity Bubble” is absolutely real. It is so easy to get wrapped up in everything going on at Trinity that one forgets there is a world beyond it.

Campus involvement is an important part of being a Tiger, but an exciting part of the Trinity experience is exploring the world off campus. With a rich history and diverse culture, San Antonio provides an exciting environment to learn, discover, and try new things.

One of San Antonio’s claims to fame is its diverse and unique food scene.

“There’s this restaurant called Feast. It has all types of food, and it’s so good! You’ll never find anything on the menu that you won’t like or you think is gross,” said Hannah Rusher, sophomore.

“La Gloria has authentic Mexican food. So, if you want real Mexican food and not Tex-Mex, go there. The food is great and it’s cheap, so it’s great for a college student’s budget.”

“Tycoon Flats is good, and it’s walkable from campus.” said Tito Sandigo, senior. “I like Local Coffee in the Pearl [Brewery]. Oh! Try Bakery Lorraine. That’s where it’s at!”

For anyone with a sweet tooth hoping to satisfy a sugar craving, sophomore Inka Boehm knows where to go: “There’s this place that sells nothing but cupcakes. It’s called Oh Yeah Cakes, and it’s so good!”

For something close by, junior Charlie Stein suggests a restaurant also serving up sweet treats.

“There’s the Olmos Pharmacy.

Their milkshakes are awesome!”

Junior Anthony Sanchez has the ultimate burger recommendation: “There’s Sam’s Burger Joint, and they have live bands every day of the week. Mondays are swing nights. Their burgers are phenomenal, and they even have their own branding on top of the burgers.”

Not a foodie? Fear not, there are many other non-food-related things to do, as Sanchez can tell you: “There’s the Grand Agave. On Thursday nights, students enter free, and there’s Latin dancing.

There’s an Archery Club downtown on Broadway and 410. It’s $10 per hour, and they have their own equipment that you can use.

Astro Bowl is a bowling alley down Austin Highway. Wednesdays are $1 nights, and Thursdays are College Night. On Fridays and Saturdays there is midnight

bowling. On September 11, 12 and 13, there is the Alamo City Comic Con.” “I like to go tubing in New Braunfels.” Rusher adds. “There’s this indie bookstore in the Pearl [Brewery]. It’s called The Twig. It has popular books, but it also has things that you would not find at a regular bookstore.”

If you’re more into sightseeing and have already been to the Alamo, senior Sarah Friedlander has a couple of recommendations: “The SAMA, San Antonio Museum of Art, has Tuesday nights free for all. Trinity Students can enter free all the time because the University pays for us to have access to the museum. There’s also the Zoo, which is my favorite place, and the Japanese Tea Gardens.”

So take a break from studying and enjoy what the bustling city of San Antonio has to offer. You never know, you might just find a new hidden gem to call your own!

It can hit you like a ton of bricks, or it can feel like nothing at all— the sudden waves of uneasiness or trepidation you may feel as a college first year are probably unfamiliar sensations to you. The subject and content of each meeting is completely confidential, and the staff works with you to help organize appointments at your convenience. As you continue to experience the excitement of moving in, adjusting to a new setting and meeting countless others just like you, you may unexpectedly stop feeling like yourself. Despite Trinity’s smaller campus and class sizes, the university has maintained a great abundance of traditions and customs. With a variety of events occurring throughout the year, students can find several ways to celebrate and spread the pride they feel as members of the Trinity community. Here are some of the most anticipated traditions you’ll be able to participate in at Trinity.

Christmas Vespers and Christmas on Oakmont: For of Trinity’s most beloved traditions, the university celebrates the holiday season on an early December night. The evening begins in the Parker Chapel with Christmas Vespers, featuring performances by the university choirs. Immediately following this gathering, Christmas at Oakmont begins. This is a tradition in which the homes of the university faculty, including the president, are open for participants to visit.

Each home offers different

foods and drinks for visitors to try, as well as diverse entertainment provided by each homeowner.

Chocolate Festival: Arranged by the Student Programming Board, Chocolate Fest occurs during the week of Valentine’s Day on the Memorial Coates Esplanade.

Each organization on campus is encouraged to bring a chocolate treat for members of the Trinity community. Bring a container to collect as many chocolate goods as possible, and arrive early to beat the crowd!

Fountain Dunk: At exactly midnight on your birthday, you can expect all of your lovely friends to carry (read: force) you out of the comfort of your room in order to be thrown into Miller Fountain right outside of Northrup Hall. If your friends are nice, they’ll bring a towel or clothes for you, but don’t count on it—they’ll probably be too busy dragging you around to remember!

While Welcome Week is all fun and games, full of laid back introductions and activities, it will soon be time for classes to begin. In order to make the grade, students must be dedicated and put in hard work. Here are several strategies for success at Trinity.

Be provocative. No two Trinity students are exactly alike. That makes the university dynamic and diverse. You will disagree with your classmates and they will disagree with you. Introducing new points of view can enrich class discussions and helps address the subject with a well rounded perspective. Don’t be afraid to voice an unpopular opinion in an appropriate discussion.

Be prepared. One of the most unique and exciting things about Trinity is the small class sizes.

Smaller classes allow for more participation and interaction between students and professors, which arguably leads students to develop a deeper understanding of the course material. Take advantage of this benefit of a Trinity education by coming to class prepared to discuss outside readings or homework.

Be a planner and prioritize.

One of the biggest responsibilities college students are introduced to during their first semester is time management. At home you probably had someone to tell you to go to bed, be home by a certain curfew or spend time working on school work. At school, you are in charge of yourself. With this great freedom comes great responsibility. Make sure you plan ahead and allot time for studying.

There will always be another party, games can be recorded on TV and friends can hang out at another time, but tests and due dates don’t change. Know what is due when, make time to work on it and plan

Be participatory. There is nothing more awkward than when a professor asks a question and is answered by twenty seconds of silence. Speak up. Even if your

Be productive. Just because your textbook is open during your Netflix marathon, it does not mean you were multi-tasking.

Checking Facebook every five minutes will only make your study time drag on, and group discussions about weekend plans are not study groups. Remove distractions while you are working. Not only will you be able to focus and actually learn, but you will be more efficient with your time and be able to get your work finished faster. Figure out where you are most able to focus—your room, the library, a coffee shop, a study room—and go there. Take periodic breaks to re-energize as well.

Be practical. Odds are that a student who prepared in advance for a test will do better than one who crammed the night before, and a paper that has been reviewed and revised will get a better grade than one that was just thrown together.

Be realistic about the amount of effort that it will take to get the grade you want on a particular assignment.

Be proud. Studying at Trinity is an honor! Take pride in the work you submit.

This past week Barack Obama—yes, the POTUS himself—uploaded his ideal playlist for a typical summer day to the streaming service Spotify (aptly titled “The President’s Summer Playlist: Day). I enjoyed listening to it and liked his diverse taste .

American Ultra is a new movie depicting stoner turned secret agent promises humor, action and comedy. While the star-studded cast reunites Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, all I can hope is the clever one-liners sprinkled throughout the trailer are not all this flick has to offer. A horse, an Ad Exec, and a Prisoner Walk Into a Bar: Summer TV Recap

School is almost here again, and hopefully Trinity students were as productive as I was this summer —that is, I hope they devoured as much media as I did. Before the workload crashes down, check out the new seasons of these three mustwatch summer shows.

Mad Men Mad Men has always embraced its status as a television drama.

Each episode feels like a unique short story with a recurring cast of characters and an overarching plot.

The show was always more about the characters’ reactions to situations than the situations themselves, with a focus on slow-burn character development rather than action.

Television shows generally accelerate plot development in the last season, but Mad Men kept chugging along at the same slow pace it always took. Some plotlines never connected. Some diverged in unexpected ways.

The final few episodes held some

surprising character resolutions.

But a major theme of Mad Men is that people can change on a dime, for better and for worse. Some of these changes damage relationships beyond repair, and the damage that isn’t mended by the end of the show hangs in the air like the last drag of a cigarette, never resolved.

The finale left me feeling less like I had witnessed the end of something and more like the camera had just been turned off at a beautiful moment for these characters —without us watching, it feels as though they continued their lives, scars and all. Each wore their experiences differently, but all showed that they had learned Robert Frost’s three word lesson describing life: “It goes on.”

Bojack Horseman Bojack Horseman is an animated TV show about tragic characters and their attempts to escape their fates.

This would make for a great liveaction drama, but part of the appeal of Bojack is its bizarre premise: the world is inhabited both by

humans and anthromorphic animal characters. The show never addresses this oddity, which makes otherwise straightforward plots much more entertaining —it also makes for some understated punny moments: hammerhead shark construction workers nail boards together with their heads and Penguin Books is run entirely by penguins, for instance.

In the second season, the selfdestructive and sometimes reprehensible Bojack explores the process of filmmaking and the politics that go along with it.

Without spoiling anything, the show continues to pursue storylines that refuse to conform to a “happy ending,” instead following the natural consequences of the characters’ bad choices and sometimes despicable actions. The show explores the depth and complexity of sorrow, depression, and existential angst while still keeping a sharp wit and twisted humor that takes the edge off of the more morose moments.

and celebrity culture in addition to new media, with pithy critiques on everything from broadcast news to the vapidity of BuzzFeed.

Moments of true connection, love and friendship were rare this season, but that made such moments all the more powerful. It was uniquely painful watching Bojack Horseman descend to darker and darker places, but the show’s dedication to honestly examining life and purpose keeps me coming back. Bojack may spend his life burning bridges, but I’ll be damned if the fire isn’t beautiful to watch.

Orange is the New Black The third season of Jenji Kohan’s breakout hit struck a lot of the same chords as previous seasons —developing a complex cast of characters and exploring their lives in the Litchfield Penitentiary — but it was not as compelling or as fastpaced as the first two.

politics and power plays, the third season settled into a rhythm that occasionally fell into predictability and creative stagnation. There was no large plot arc to hold the action together, so the season felt a bit like a collection of character moments, some of which worked and some of which fell flat.

Season three decreased focus on Piper, the show’s de facto main character, choosing instead to devote more time to minor characters like the stoic Chang and neo-hippie Brook Soso. There were certainly filler episodes between the truly heart-wrenching and enlightening moments, but the strength of the characters held up wavering plotlines enough that I can still applaud the season as a whole.

I hope next season grows a stronger plot backbone—this would help drive a more nuanced examination of prison and life from the perspective of these multifaceted characters.

How to have a great relationship with your RM

A&E REPORTER As NSO begins, you may find yourself a little nervous about adjusting to the college lifestyle. But fear not! One of the key ingredients to having a successful first year at Trinity is to get to know your Resident Mentor, or RM. A solid relationship with your RM is one of the most essential components to having a successful year. To start off on the right foot, here are some tips to keep your relationship running smoothly.

Cause problems with other first years (particularly in your hallway). This may seem counterintuitive, but remember: there’s no such thing as bad publicity. If you cause

enough problems among your fellow residents, you will gain name recognition. As the word spreads, your RM will be sure to hear about it and remember who you are twice as fast. Do this well enough and they may even ask you to have a private meeting with them one-onone. See, you’re already getting special treatment!

Constantly call them. Once you’re on a first name basis with your RM, be persistent about following up with them.

It’s their job to assist you in your transition to campus and be extra available to your needs. Use this to your advantage and call them every time you have a question. Whether it’s about their opinion on what you should have for lunch or if you just need to know what

the name of a particular campus cat is, nothing is too small.

Beginning college is a difficult journey, and there’s no need for you to figure things out on your own when there’s an upperclassman with valuable experience at your disposal.

Foster a close friendship and you’ll be getting to know your RM fairly well; they may even begin to acknowledge you when they see you stumbling around on campus. At this point, you can safely assume that you are going to be lifelong friends. To speed this process along, assure them that you want to be BFFs by asking them to hang out with you as much as possible. (If you want to take it a step further, “coincidentally” attend all the same parties that they do, so

they can’t make new memories without you!) Don’t worry about appearing desperate or needy; they’re literally paid to spend time with you!

Bribe them. Sooner or later in a first year’s life, you’ll find yourself in a sticky situation where you need your RM to help you out. Start planning early, because when this moment comes, you will need to have to have the advantage. Pay close attention to what your RM likes, so you can come up with a suitable bribe in a flash.

If you’re unsure about what to get, food from Mabee dining hall is a great fallback option.

Most upperclassmen don’t include Mabee in their meal plan, so they’ll bend over backwards for a sample of such fine cuisine. Slip a plate into their

room for them to find. They’ll be so grateful that they’ll do anything you ask!

If all else fails, use blackmail.

Once again, preparation is key.

Let no detail escape your notice. This works best if you enlist the help of your hallmates: take notes on your RM’s behavior and then compare them. Your RM is only human, and eventually they must slip up and make a crucial mistake, leaving them vulnerable to your threats. You will be ready.

If you don’t have time for this long-term option and need dirt on them in a flash, don’t be afraid to plant contraband in their rooms and then threaten them! They’ll take care of any problem you have immediately to get you out of their hair. Genius!

I know what you all are already thinking now that you’re settled into your dorm, “DANGNABBIT!” How am I supposed to watch episodes of How To Get Away With Murder when it comes back on September 24 without a DVR?!” It’s okay everyone, your parents have got you covered.

Netflix This one is a given. You need a Netflix account to survive college.

Period. If you have one, you are a normal human being.

If you don’t have one, get one immediately and never admit that you came to college without one.

HuluPlus Having a HuluPlus account is literally the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in the 22 years of my life. Yes, it still has commercials, BUT you can find a plethora of shows you cannot really find anywhere else. Want to binge-watch Sabrina, the Teenage Witch? YOU CAN FREAKING DO IT! Want to catch up on the latest season of Bob’s Burgers? YOU CAN DO THAT TOO! It has so many shows and specific seasons that Netflix does not carry. I highly suggest begging your parents to get an account. If they ask, “Tiffany, why the hell should we pay 7.99 a month for another streaming service?” Say, “Pops, you can watch the latest season of Justified to fill that red-neck hole in your heart.

And Momsie, you can fill your desire for food porn by watching Top

Chef from the beginning!”

It’s that easy. If they are still resisting the idea, cry. If you’re a boy, cry even harder. It’ll unsettle them so much they will sign up for an account right that instant in your dorm room.

Your Local Cable Provider Getting your parents’ account username and password for your cable provider is a cheap way to access every channel in existence.

I’m not kidding. Go to FXX, enter your info, and BOOM! Every episode of The Simpsons ever made is at your fingertips. This also works for channels like Lifetime, Bravo, Starz, HBO and basic cable channels like ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS. Of course, in order for you to have access to these channels at college, your parents have to have subscriptions to them.

Or you can beg your friends for their info, but that’s not really legal, so shhhh!

Illegal Websites Here at the Trinitonian, we definitely do not condone the use of illegal downloading/streaming websites. However, the big one that was a favorite of many a college student, which rhymes with Moject Tree ReeVee, was finally shut down this summer, which caused us to curse and our computers to sing their

thanks since they no longer have to deal with so many viruses. I’m sure there are many other websites where you can illegally watch movies and television, but my editor is looking over my shoulder, so I can’t share any of them with you. Sorry.

Now with all of this information, go forth and begin your inevitable procrastination, my pretties!

The best days of your life: A guide to NSO

A&E EDITOR New Student Orientation (NSO) is a seven-day process designed to integrate new students into Trinity’s vibrant campus life. There are events for meeting new people, learning the important spots on campus and discovering what academic and extracurricular options are available. It’s going to give new students a jam-packed schedule so they will be sure to have a busy, structured first week on campus.

It may be an overwhelming experience, especially after a long, lazy summer, but it is an amazing way to phase into Trinity’s energetic environment.

If I could give one piece of advice, as a senior with a bit of distance from the events, it would just be to drink the Kool-Aid. When the Orientation Team is performing funny, awkward skits or everyone’s being shuffled into the gym for a massive icebreaker game, be as positive and open as possible. Choosing a good attitude for this week will most likely result in making more friends and developing a positive relationship with this new home.

Now, here is a quick guide to some of the major activities all first years will be attending this week (a lot of this information, and much more, is available on the TU Life app): Bell Center Check-in Date: Thursday August 20 Time: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Place: William Bell Center 115 You drive up to your residence hall after having waited in an endless car line for 45 minutes, suddenly people in maroon tiedyed shirts are opening every door and grabbing each suitcase, lamp and toothbrush you packed.

You are taken up to your new dorm room, which is currently

being filled with your precious things. A bubbly individual walks in, forces a handshake and introduces herself as your resident mentor—a title that you don’t totally understand. You look around for your parents before being told to go find the gym for check-in. You walk across a hot parking lot and into a building labeled as the Bell Center where other students are congregating among various booths where people in suits are handing out important documents. It’s all very overwhelming and you feel the anxiety begin to rise in your gut. Then, somebody takes your picture.

While this event can be a bit stressful, it’s very important for finding documents for parking permits, learning about different academic departments and obtaining your Tiger Card. Just remember to smile brightly.

Students will notice that many of NSO’s activities are geared towards helping students bond and educating them on Trinity’s values and traditions.

One amazing aspect of going to school here is the weight both the students and administration place on service.

Together, students will work on creating a record number of packets for a charity called Be The Match!, which helps pair ill patients with bone marrow donors. The activity will help students get to know each other while instilling within them the importance of camaraderie and service.

Alcohol, Sexual Assault & Step Up

Everyone remembers Playfair because it is basically “the” NSO activity. It will make all first years bond in ways they didn’t believe was possible before they entered the gym. I don’t want to give too much away about the event, but I can tell you that it has the potential to really benefit you if you truly participate and try to enjoy it as much as possible. You can definitely make real friends (maybe even some outside your hall) and have a few funny stories to tell afterward. Just a bit of fair warning, though: wash your hands before.

Place: Laurie Auditorium Here at Trinity, students are incredibly involved with policies that affect them. It is incredibly important to be as informed as possible about administrative perspectives and actions, especially with issues like alcohol and sexual assault.

This event will give everyone the knowledge and tools to be a force of positivity and development in the evolutionary process of perfecting this school On-campus Service Project (Be The Match!)

Place: Laurie Auditorium/ Parker Chapel Courtyard/ Coates University Center Esplanade This series of events is one of Trinity’s oldest traditions. All the first years will get dressed

up and attend the convocation, which kicks off the academic year. Then everyone will climb the Trinity tower, something that’s only repeated again at graduation, to shake hands with President Anderson.

This will all be followed with a giant picnic. This day also basically signals the end of New Student Orientation.

Hopefully, by this time you have learned a few things about the school, made a few friends and are ready to go to bed early and wake up on time for classes starting Wednesday. Good luck from the Trinitonian! This is gonna be a weird week.

Sarah Tipton’s declassified first year Trinitonian survival guide Ah, my first year at Trinity.

I remember walking into the Bell Center on the first day of orientation with bright eyes and a bushy tail. Now my eyes are dull and teary and my tail is knotted and has a bunch of trash and food stuck to it.

That’s my life.

However, through my trials of being a student here for the last three years, hopefully I can give you all a few somewhat helpful hints on how to survive the college life at Trinity. Fingers crossed that it works out for all of us!

Professors You’ve probably heard it a thousand times throughout your admissions process here at Trinity, but our professors really are the bomb-dot-com.

Sure, there are the rare cases of students not caring for a professor because they are “boring” or “mean,” and to those people I say: you are weenies. The professors’ job is to make sure you succeed, because if you do well, it gives them personal satisfaction and possibly a pay raise. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to put any effort into your education.

Gone are the days when if you don’t turn in work or miss a bunch of classes your teacher will hound you. The professors

here have their own families to take care of and papers to write. They are most likely smarter than any of us will ever be, so we need to suck it up and try to impress them, because they hold the key to our futures in a little thing called recommendation letters.

On that note, to all my professors this semester: I admire each of you. Please like me so I can get into a decent Master’s program next year.

Making Friends TALK TO EVERYONE. Seriously. Talk to the people in your hall. Talk to the people in your classes. Talk to the Mabee workers. And especially talk to Dean Tuttle. He loves being bothered by our crazy antics.

The people on this campus are some of the friendliest people on the planet.

But if anyone is ever mean to you, send him or her my way. I’ll give them a good talking to. I’ve worked with preschoolers this summer, so I’ve got this. College students and preschoolers are the same, right?

Dating I beg all of you, DO NOT begin a relationship your first few weeks here. You can hang out with that really cute girl from Meridian, Mississippi or flirt hard core with the stud from Wyoming (Are there any

students here from Wyoming?

Particularly with a lumberjack background? I’m asking for research), but do not commit to a relationship with anyone during the next few weeks.

If you do, you might miss the chance to branch out and meet other cool people that are around you and you will limit your social interactions to be with one person, and that’s not healthy.

Also, if anyone tries to tell you who you can hang out with or dictate your schedule, drop his or her ass immediately. You do not want to be dating Edward Cullen or Christian Grey.

Roundtable: most embarassing During my first semester as a student I took a really fun class that also had a special speakers/ lecture component. Every three weeks or so we all gathered to listen to someone speak.

Well, I got really sick in October and had a cough that stuck with me for about two months. One lecture was a particularly rough night; I was coughing so much and so loudly the speaker called me out and even offered me her water bottle. I never lived it down in class.

I ended up reading for a character that was tied up and rolling around on a train, so I just did those actions, not paying attention to the fact that I was wearing a dress. I’m pretty sure I flashed the other people auditioning and the director! My face was beet red by the time I finished the scene.

One day during freshman year, I was studying in one of the music practice rooms. They are very quiet, but have a large window set in the door. I wore headphones and was jamming out to Pink and suddenly decided to use the room’s mirror to practice my dance skills in front of. With the soundproofed room and my headphones in, I failed to hear the rising laughter behind me: a tour guide had led her group through the music building to see the practice rooms, and a huge crowd of prospective students and parents witnessed the most earnest whiteboy dance they’ll ever see.

I wanted to take a picture where I was mooning the camera, so I handed her my phone. The only issue was that I was wearing a romper, so I basically had to get fully naked in order to flash my bright white globes. I didn’t really mind, though, so I pulled down the romper, leaned down and started laughing at my wit and originality. As my friend was about to take the photo, I looked up and saw a TUPD Officer riding his bike by us and shaking his head. I was literally caught with my pants down.

With his first season as the head football coach under his belt, Jerheme Urban looks to build on the success that the team secured at the end of last season.

This goal won’t be too challenging according to Urban, as the team has nine returning players.

“I’m really excited about this 2015 team,” Urban said. “We have nine starters back on the number one defense in conference last season. Seven of them are sophomores or juniors, so they have a chance to really grow and improve as a unit.”

Opening their schedule on Saturday, September 5 with an away game in Brownwood,

Texas against Howard Payne University will prove to be a tough test for the Tigers.

After holding on to a fouryear winning streak, the Yellow Jackets trumped Trinity with a season-opening 30-27, but they are hoping their preparation will bring back their success.

To prepare for the upcoming game, Jai Boatman, a senior cornerback, mentions that the team will have to stay disciplined and motivated.

“We know Howard Payne pretty well. It’s a good first game for us and we know that they run the ball hard,” Boatman said.

Urban will rely on the upperclassmen like Boatman to prepare the team for the game since they are playing such a familiar competitor.

After a 4-6 record last season, the Tigers have high hopes for the upcoming season.

Ending the season on a positive note by blowing out Austin College 41-0, the Tigers are hoping to continue that momentum for their biggest

competitors on the schedule: Texas Lutheran University and Southwestern University.

“We want to win conference and push for a playoff bid, and we believe with this roster, we can definitely do it,” said Sean Madlem, sophomore quarterback.

Madlem elaborated on the team’s goals, noting his desire for more consistency and feeling hopeful toward adjustments in past critical mistakes.

“We need to be more consistent and protect the football,” Madlem said. “As Coach Urban says, ‘Be the Standard.’ Turnovers have been a problem for us. They were a reason we lost a couple games.”

With this practice season underway, the team has already redoubled their efforts in improving some fundamental football skills.

“We’ve been working on ball control in practice and we believe that with the turnover contest in practice, we will be more successful in holding onto the football,” Madlem said.

The football team also has had the opportunity to practice on the brand new intramural field.

The new field is designed to be more durable and keep the field surface cooler.

To make sure they were ready for the season, the players organized seven-on-seven drills over the summer at the University of Incarnate Word’s Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium in order to get a good look at the incoming class.

“There are a couple kids in the secondary that can definitely contribute right away,” Madlem said.

One of these secondary players includes first year cornerback KaDarius Lee. “I came to Trinity over the summer, have been working out and just tried my best to get ready for what we are doing right now,” Lee said.

All that hard work is starting to get noticed by the veteran players.

“KaDarius has been doing pretty good,” Madlem said. “He has quick feet for a young kid and seems very experienced.”

Trinity Football will be playing its first game at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 5 at Howard Payne.

Advice for the athlete

SPORTS REPORTER Being a student athlete on campus definitely has its perks, but it is not all fun and games.

We get to move in early and get our laundry done, and we have a training room to help us with any medical issues. Playing a sport is very time consuming, so how do we have time for everything else? Well, the answer is time management. I am going to give you five tips for being a successful student athlete.

1. Use your teammates

You have so much information right in front of you. Who knows Trinity better than the people who have been there for at least a year? They can provide you with so much advice, such as which classes or teachers to take. Teammates can even serve as tutors if you need help.

Your teammates also know the resources on campus to help you out, so always ask them first.

2. Get your rest You will be able to perform much better when you get a healthy amount of sleep. I know it sounds cliché, but this will significantly help your body function. Getting a good night’s rest will help you use your time wisely by getting things done in your off time

rather than taking naps. This then opens up more time at night so you will not have too much to do. Sleep will help the body be ready for your busy day.

3. Make friends in class We miss so much school due to traveling for games, so get a buddy who can give you their notes and let you know what you have missed. You don’t want to miss out on any extra credit opportunities. Professors are very good at giving you the materials you’ve missed, but you have to communicate with them beforehand. Making friends in your classes will also help you when it comes to studying. If you have any confusion, it is always nice to have someone to ask for help. Having a study buddy will help you succeed in the classroom.

4. Use your time wisely This is the most important step because making time for your homework is crucial.

The key to success is staying organized and creating space for work or errands to run.

Even while traveling, our coach always makes sure we get our work done in between games.

Getting the most out of your time will relieve some stress from your workload.

5. Have fun!

Since there are a ton of things to worry about, the one thing you need to do is enjoy playing the sport you love. We are Division III athletes and do not receive scholarships for playing; we play because we love it. Don’t let stress about playing time or school get in the way of doing what you love.

Coach Jenkins always tells us to leave everything at the door.

When you step in the gym it is time to focus on volleyball. Have fun with your teammates in the competitive atmosphere. Even with all your worries, having a sport to take your mind off of everything is so relaxing.

Although it is time consuming, practice should be a break from your day to get away from school work and have some fun. Enjoy it because once it is over you will miss it dearly.

College is a time to figure out who you are, explore new things, experience failure, but also have your shining moments. Student athletes have the best support system anyone could ask for and they have the opportunity to learn and grown on and off the court or field. There will be rough times, but to overcome something with your team is more rewarding than accomplishing it by yourself.

San Antonio All Star game, prepping for that. I saw Coach Urban walking around the field. My head coach told me to go talk to him. I talked to Coach Urban and he told me, “Hey, come check out the school, I think you’re a really great football player and I think Trinity is the place for you.” I came here, checked it out, and fell in love with it.

What did you love about the school when you first got here?

The atmosphere is peaceful. It’s small, the teachers, everyone knows everyone. Also the minicommunity and that degree at the end of my four years was also very appealing to me.

Who is your favorite athlete?

My favorite athlete is Earl Thomas.

SPORTS REPORTER Summer is over, and school is here! How will I have time to work out with my busy schedule? Is the freshman fifteen a real thing? Trinity offers some ways for you to stay in shape without the stress!

1. Go to the gym

The Trinity athletic center is a great place to get active.

The William H. Bell Center has a cardio room equipped with treadmills, ellipticals and stairsteppers as well as machines for a full body workout.

The Bell Center also has a weight room. I know a lot of people think the weight room is only for athletes, but anyone can work out there too!

The weight room is great for a strength and agility workout with a full set of free weights and bar racks.

Our athletic center offers other activities such as racquetball, ping pong, basketball and tennis.

Just go to the equipment desk on the second floor of the Bell Center to check out any necessary equipment.

The only thing you need is your Tiger Card, and you are ready to go.

2. Join an Intramural team

Getting involved with intramurals is super easy and fun!

They offer multiple sports each semester including flag football, coed basketball, indoor soccer, sand volleyball and many more.

Intramurals are great for any skill level and they are a way to make some new friends.

competitive edge. Some teams do get very competitive, including our faculty basketball team, which participates every year.

You are allowed to participate in multiple sports if you would like, but only on one team for each sport.

3. Get involved in TUFit

TUFit is a student-run organization on campus that hosts different athletic events every week.

The schedule for this fall has not come out yet, but past events included yoga, strength class, zumba class, crossfit and meditation.

Some of the classes are not on campus, but close enough to campus to attend.

These events are completely free, and you get to pick what kind of workout you want.

It is a great way to keep a mixed workout schedule so you do not get bored of doing the same thing every day.

TUFit will get you moving with some fun activities, so don’t miss out!

4. Eat healthy

Yes, working out does help you stay in shape, but you also have to get in those vegetables.

Mabee offers a stir fry line where you can pick your vegetables and sauce, and they will cook it for you.

The dining hall also has a great sandwich line with different meats and bread to choose from for you to create the perfect sandwich.

The comfort food lines

normally offer some type of meat or fish along with vegetables and side options.

If you need a snack during the day, our Center for the Sciences and Innovation (CSI) has great little bites for when you’re on the go, in between classes or for a study break.

Eating healthily will also keep your energy up and keep you focused for your classes. Trinity offers great options to make sure you get the nutrition you need!

5. Walk to class I know this sounds obvious, but since our campus sits on an old quarry, walking around is a great workout in itself.

Even walking up the many steps of cardiac hill a couple times a day is a calorie burner.

Many people drive to class, but simply walking to class could give you an advantage for staying fit.

Walking to class allows you to be social and say “Hi” to people on your way.

Maybe find a friend to walk to class with to make it more enjoyable. I know it can be uncomfortable in the Texas heat, but bringing a water bottle with you to class will keep you hydrated.

Take in these five tips this year, and stay healthy. Staying in shape shouldn’t be a challenge when you get to college and Trinity has many options that you can take advantage of.

Get involved in different activities on campus and most importantly, have fun.

San Antonio sports teams score with fans; a guide to a city beyond the Spurs franchise When I first arrived at Trinity University, one of the first things to cross my mind was that I’d have to become a bigger basketball fan because I believed that was the only sports team that San Antonio had to offer. I arrived at the AT&T Center excited for my first Spurs game and fully ready to take in all the action.

I glanced around the arena to become familiar with my surroundings when something on the jumbotron caught my eye.

San Antonio Missions

San Antonio Scorpions

The minor league baseball team is just a short twenty-minute drive away from the Trinity campus.

The stadium has an amazing atmosphere, with the San Antonio Missions website referring to it as the “Jewel of the Texas League.”

As the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the Missions help the Padres’ draft picks grow and develop into potential major leaguers.

Although the team has an overall 24-27 record thus far, the missions have really come into their won winning eight of 10 recent games.

Outfielders Hunter Renfro and Yeison Asencio will both have to play key roles to help the Missions turn their season around.

With Thursdays being dollar night, Missions games are can’tmiss events for students wanting to enjoy the dollar beer, hot dogs and sodas.

Located northwest of Trinity, the San Antonio Scorpions play at Toyota Field. As a member of the North American Soccer League, the Scorpions won the championship last season.

This season, the Scorpions haven’t had as successful of a season as they wanted, currently in tenth place in the eleven-team league with a record of one win, two draws and four losses for the fall season.

While they have not had the on field success that faithful supporters would have hoped for, there are two recent Trinity graduates of the 2015 class playing with the Scorpions – goalie Matt Cardone and midfielder Johnny Lawson – who hopefully have bright futures in the league.

This Saturday, the Scorpions have a dollar popcorn, hot dog and soda night. With tickets starting at only $10, this is a fun opportunity to see some competitive soccer matches while watching Trinity alums live their dream of playing professional soccer.

San Antonio Rampage The Rampage is the minor league hockey team affiliate with the Florida Panthers. The hockey team shares the AT&T Center with both pro basketball teams, the Spurs and the Silver Stars.

Located just fifteen minutes from campus, this easily reachable destination hosts all sorts of sporting events, and even rodeos and concerts.

With a 45-23 record last season, the Rampage qualified for the playoffs where they were eliminated in the first round.

With key players coming back, and young talents such as goalie Michael Houser and winger Quinton Howden, this team could compete and ultimately make a run for the championship.

For those of legal age, all of these stadiums offer dollar beer, hotdog, and soda nights that are an absolute must for those wanting to explore these sporting venues.

The official promotions and game day schedule has not been released yet, so stay tuned for our future issues to find out when these can’t miss events are!

On it, the Spurs were advertising for a Rampage game. I quickly pulled out my phone and found that San Antonio was not the one-sport town I had believed it to be. With a minor league hockey team, a minor league baseball team, a professional soccer team, a WNBA franchise and an NBA franchise, San Antonio has multiple sports options to choose from.

The San Antonio Stars are the WNBA team that calls San Antonio home.

Guard Danielle Robinson and Forward Sophia YoungMalcolm are the two players that steer this Stars team to success.

Despite their 7-18 record this season, the Stars still have a positive game day environment that makes these games a can’t miss event.

The breast cancer awareness nights and military appreciation nights hosted by the Stars are just a few fun events to attend.

This Friday is also dollar beer and soda night, so if you are looking to relax and unwind, what better way than catching a basketball game with some friends?

The Stars will be playing against the Minnesota Lynx (18-8) at the Freeman Coliseium at 8 p.m.

Of all the teams in San Antonio, it is the Spurs that have captured the heart of the city.

By bringing in LaMarcus Aldridge and David West, the Spurs have become a favorite to win the NBA championship this upcoming season.

In addition, Tim Duncan has taken a huge paycut to stay with the team showing just how committed this team is to winning another championship.

With a 55-27 record last season, this team is expected to best that mark this time around, causing the Spurs games to be can’t miss basketball this season.

If the team is as good as they look on paper, and they look like the best team on paper, all Trinity students should do whatever they can to go to a Spurs game this season.
