Chairmans Message Howard’s Way The Chairman Reflects

What makes a football fan? Supporters have all sorts of reasons for watching their favourite teams. Often the first team they watch as a young person, is the team that stays with them for life. George Bogdan who watches most of our first team matches home and away, provides us with several clips on Twitter of the highlights of matches. George has made a huge commitment in his support of TAFC. A few weeks ago, he drive down from Scotland to be at the match versus London Tigers. Amazingly, he left Scotland at 0400 hours and drove non-stop for ten hours to be at the match! We hear all sorts of crazy stories about the lengths to which supporters go, to watch their teams, often to countries and venues that do not have direct flights, or easy access. At TAFC, we are trying to encourage more people to attend our home matches. There is a strong Tring element running through our six teams, so we should be improving on the die-hard support of around 100. We have anew website and on line programme, with increasing activity on social media, which should appeal to the younger generation, so what more should we be doing to increase interest? Perhaps we need a Supporters’ Forum, where ideas can be exchanged and suggestions for improving communications can be aired. The Club cannot standstill. If we do that, we will eventually stagnate and go backwards. We need to find more people who will give of their time and bring ideas and skills to the Club. Do not wait to be asked!!

Match Report Sat 14th Sept 2019 Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

Biggleswade Utd 0-1 TAFC HARD EARNED WIN TAKES US TO THE TOP Four long journeys to the town of Biggleswade last season brought nothing but disappointment and so this result was sweet indeed. The strength of our squad is evident from the fact that we had three key players missing from our line up and we had to make an enforced, early change when the hugely unfortunate Chris Vardy had to be replaced before the half hour mark and yet there was no noticeable drop off in our standards. There were solid performances all around the pitch but special mention goes to Jay Lovell for marshalling a re-shuffled back four, Louie Collier for a superb 70 minutes on his first start for the club and Oran Swales who terrorised the Biggleswade back four with his skills and trickery. We disagree with the Bigggleswade half time tweet that they were unfortunate to go in one goal down. Our opinion was that we dominated and could have led by more. Several chances went begging two for Dash, two for Oran plus a Frazier John goal disallowed for off-side. By contrast, Biggleswade had one early chance that ended up off target and not much else. Our goal was a thing of beauty a great team goal. From Charlie to Louie and the back of the net in four moves and five seconds, a sweeping attack that ended in a great cross from Oran and smashed in to the net by the on-rushing Louie. Classic! HALF TIME 0-1 Much the same in the second half when we had numerous opportunities to extend our lead. Dash scuffed a shot, Louie shot just wide, and their keeper saved well from a bullet header from Jay from 6 yards out. Our back five remained solid and well organised to the end. Somewhat in desperation Biggleswade brought on their tall striker with the obvious intent of bombarding us with high balls but this tactic failed to materialise into anything troublesome. A one goal lead always seems precarious but we saw the game out without great concern. In fact it was us who looked most likely to score and even as late as the 93 minute Luke went through and forced another exceptional save from their keeper. Due to other teams being otherwise occupied in the Vase we moved to the top of the table, having successfully handled a series of three away games, taking maximum points. We now return to Grass Roots for two home games in which we will be looking to consolidate our position. We are progressing very nicely with quality all over the park and a really impressive group ethic. The strength of our bench today is another indicator that we can go places this season. Team: Charlie Mann, Jack Sunderland, Chris Vardy (Connor Church 28), Jacob Carter, Ben Johnson, Jay Lovell , Luke Dunstan, Louie Collier (Mulik Rickman (70), Charncey Dash, Frazier John (Dan Ferrigno 75), Oran Swales.

Our Opponents

History of North Greenford United F.C. The club was founded in September 1944 by the late Mr A.M. Timpson as a youth team. The following season saw the foundation of the Ealing Youth League and in May 1946, the club were crowned as the league’s first champions. The following season saw the formation of a senior side and the club entered the Hanwell and District League. In 1947/48 the club entered the Harrow Wembley League and in 1954/55 became champions of the Senior Division. In 1974 County Honours were achieved after winning the Middlesex Intermediate Cup. In 1982/83 the club won the Middlesex League and in May 1983 promotion was gained to the Spartan League. In season 2003/04 the club were runners up in the Premier Challenge Cup losing 4-1 to AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of over 5,000 at Woking FC. In season 2004/05 the club finished runners up in the Premier League. Season 2005/06 saw North Greenford finish 13th in the Premier League and reach the semi-final of the League Cup. The following season 2006/07 saw the club go one round better in the League Cup but the team lost to Merstham 4-1 in the final. Season 2010/11 proved another successful year for the club at all levels. Despite having a difficult first season at the higher level the team succeeded in retaining North Greenford’s status as a Step 4 club, eventually finishing 18th. The Reserves finished Runners-up in the Suburban Northern League to gain promotion to the Premier Division and the Under 18s took Runners-up spot in the Allied Counties Eastern Division. The Third Team – the ‘Socials’ – finished as Champions of the London Commercial League Division 2, and the Vets won the MCFA Veterans Cup. Despite notable successes in both the FA and Red Insure Cup, the first half of season 2011/12 saw the club struggling in the league. Steve Ringrose was replaced by Neil Shipperley as First Team manager in December 2011. Shipps managed to successfully steer the side away from the threat of relegation, doubling the points tally in the second half of the season and coming within one point of achieving the club’s original 50 point target. Experiencing an even more difficult time during the first half of season 2012/13, Neil Shipperley was re-appointed for a second term replacing Jon-Barrie Bates as First Team Manager at the beginning of October. After an initial struggle, as Barry Morris and his management team re-built the first team squad virtually from scratch, the club saw another impressive end-of-season run that came close to matching that of the 2012/13 campaign. 21 points were amassed in the final 14 games with the club finishing on 35 points, 11 better than the previous year, four points clear of bottom club AFC Hayes and just five behind The club eventually finished the 2016/17 season in a creditable 13th position on 58 points. With Danny and Colin still in charge, assisted by Terry Schofield who joined the First XI management team, we were looking for a much higher finish last season. Unfortunately, after an excellent start with a fine FA Cup away win against Welwyn Garden City, during the earlier part of the 2017/18 campaign we became the league’s draw specialists dropping points in games we should have won. Two major changes were then forced on the club during the close season. First last season’s management team unexpectedly resigned and this was followed by an FA decision to move us to the Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division. On the management side we were quick to appoint Paul Palmer and Matt Penfold who had just won promotion from the SSMFL Division One with Southall. Neither Paul nor Matt are new to the club. Matt served here for two terms under Neil Shipperley and Paul took over from Shipps after his resignation in February 2014. Once again, with the experienced squad they are building at the club, we have high expectations at the start of this season’s campaign.

Karen’s Ramblings

SATURDAY’S RAMBLINGS – 17TH SEPTEMBER 2019 By: Karen Browne SATURDAY’S HEADLINES Thoughts of a trip to the home of English football, Wembley Stadium, was the focus for 25 SSML clubs as they did battle in the Buildbase FA Vase looking to join Biggleswade United and Tring Athletic (both exempt) in the First Round Proper.

WEEKEND’S HEADLINES In the FA Vase there can’t be many clubs that can boast of being unbeaten in the competition along with yet to concede a goal but New Salamis can. Buckingham Athletic, Crawley Green and FC Broxbourne Borough all recorded their best win in the competition while Wodson Park suffered their heaviest FA Vase defeat. The weekend brought about 141 goals from the 36 games (an average of 3.92 per game). Nico Dickmann-Pena (Buckingham United) led the way with a five goal haul while Josh Mantle (Berkhamsted Raiders) helped himself to four and Matt Cruse (Buckingham Athletic) netted a hat-trick.
