About Matilda’s Planet Some years ago Matilda, Social Entrepreneur David Evans MBE‘s five year old daughter, told him he should take more responsibility for the environment. Her words prompted him to establish Matilda’s Planet.

At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding solutions to our energy problems. The company’s values are to be socially responsible, sustainable – and to provide practical solutions to the real problem of keeping your house warm.

We have a solution that’s both practical and socially responsible. We all know that changing the way we consume energy is something we have to do – but actually doing anything about it is a challenge. Matilda’s Planet came from a little girl’s belief that it’s the job of the ‘grown-ups’ to make sure that the legacy we leave for our children is one both we, and they, can be proud of.

Grassroots Talk

Good afternoon & welcome to the Grass Roots Stadium for the visit of Milton Keynes Irish. We welcome their players, officials and supporters and wish them a safe journey home afterwards. This afternoon’s game is sponsored by Neil & David Foskett.

We still have match sponsorship availability on future games (see page 16) including Tuesday against Arlesey Town and when we host local derbies against Leverstock Green and Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, so please speak to Graham Bright if you are interested. If you are able to volunteer for the club on a regular basis or even just occasionally please speak to a committee member. We are always grateful for extra support. The club are holding our Annual General Meeting at 8pm on Monday 29th November. All members are encouraged to come join us. Tuesday night saw us go out of the Herts Senior Cup 4-0 against Hitchin Town with two injury time goals making the scoreline appear quite harsh. The match did however give Ryan Sturges the opportunity to see some of our under 18 team in senior action, with five players making their debuts.

Today’s Match Sponsor Neil and David Foskett This afternoon’s sponsors are Neil & David Foskett. David was club captain for a number of seasons and second leading all time appearance maker on 754 matches making his debut in 1992. Neil was a tough tackling defender, a regular in the reserves and now sits on the club committee. Both became well acquainted with local referees during their Athletic careers!

Our opponents On June 1st 2020 the club was formed when Milton Keynes Robins, Unite MK and Milton Keynes Irish Veterans joined together to operate as one club going into the 2020/21 season, Milton Keynes Irish FC! The first team playing at Step 6 in the Spartan South Midlands Division One, the newly formed reserve team playing in the UCL Reserve Division and the Veterans playing in the Veterans League Division One.

Milton Keynes Irish Our first season as a club was unfortunately brought to an early finish due to the effects of COVID-19. The 2020/21 season was looking to be very promising as we found ourselves sitting second in the table after 9 games played with the best PPG in the league and went on an exciting run in the FA Vase which saw us get knocked out in the 3rd round on penalties after advancing through 4 rounds beating three higher league opposition. The season was officially curtailed however due to performances under Milton Keynes Robins, the club earned promotion to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division (Step 5) based on PPG over the previous 2 seasons.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF “NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE WEEKEND HEADLINES Shefford Town & Campton claimed top billing in the headlines with their performance of beating higher ranked Risborough Rangers in the FA Vase. Wellingborough Whitworth score seven at Raunds Town while Tring Athletic hit four on the road at Cockfosters. Manager less Arlesey Town defeat London Colney 5-1 to record back to back league wins. Leverstock Green, Bovingdon and Pitstone & Ivinghoe all progress in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy.

Saturday 20th November / Sunday 21st November THE BUILDBASE FA VASE Second Round Saturday’s Buildbase FA Vase Second Round ties saw two SSML sides achieving their best progress in the competition by reaching the Third Round for the first time, Shefford Town & Campton (in their FA Vase debut) produced an excellent performance in their all SSML tie against Premier Division Risborough Rangers, the Division One side coming from a goal down before winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw while New Salamis saw off visiting Ipswich Wanderers 2-0. There were two ties that saw former SSML clubs hosting current day members and accounts on both of these games can be found later in these Ramblings. Elsewhere it was a late stoppage time goal that ended the hopes of Flackwell Heath as visiting Combined Counties League side Guildford City progressed while Harefield United gallant fightback against Combined Counties League side Berks County saw the visitor edging it by the odd goal in five. Sunday’s action saw plenty of late drama in an all SSML tie, Hadley finding themselves 0-2 down with six minutes remaining at Baldock Town before a brace from Ofori took the tie to a penalty shoot-out which the visitors won 5-4. GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY First Round Three more First Round ties in the newly named Gladwish Challenge Trophy took place on Saturday, two of which were all Division Two affairs with the other being a Premier Division v Division Two contest. Leverstock Green avoided any shocks when entertaining Tring Corinthians AFC, the Premier Division side running out comfortable 5-0 winners against their Division Two opponents. Bovingdon were also amongst the goals in their ‘local derby’ tie with Sarratt, the hosts winning 4-0 while the other tie again a ‘local derby’ saw Pitstone & Ivinghoe booking their passage with a 2-0 over visiting Aston Clinton. PREMIER DIVISION With the top two involved in FA Vase action the attention turned to third placed Harpenden Town to try and close the gap at the top as they travelled to Ardley United, but it was not to be as the hosts recorded back to back 3-0 home wins. At the other end of the table Crawley Green remain bottom after going down by the odd goal in three at home against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos while Holmer Green hoover above the relegation places after they were beaten at home by Milton Keynes Irish, the visitors winning 2-1. Arlesey Town, still under temporary management, were the Premier Division biggest winnings on the day with a 5-1 success against visiting London Colney while in the days other action Dunstable Town recorded back to back league wins with a solitary goal success at home against Oxhey Jets.

The Views Expressed Are Solely My Own, Are Written Tongue In Cheek And Should Be Taken With A Pinch Of Salt A weekly column courtesy of the SSML Fixture Secretary

DIVISION ONE Leaders Stotfold travelled to third placed Buckingham Athletic, the hosts looking to extend their six match winning league run however it was not to be as the visitors maintained their push for the title with a solitary goal win. Second placed Winslow United recovered from 0-2 down to win 4-3 at Northampton Sileby Rangers. Ampthill Town returned to third spot after a 5-0 win at struggling Amersham Town. At the other end of the table Burton Park Wanderers still seek that first elusive league as they lost 1-2 at home against Rushden & Higham United in front of their biggest crowd of the season, 171 in attendance while bottom club Irchester United also lost 1-2 at home against London Tigers, a result that saw Tigers climb out of the relegation zone. It was goals galore at Raunds Town however it was visiting Wellingborough Whitworth who bagged most of them in a 7-3 win while two other sides netted four on their travels, Long Crendon winning 4-0 at Langford and Kidlington Reserves enjoyed a 4-1 win at Letchworth Garden City Eagles. The day’s other action saw honours even as Bedford were held 1-1 at home by Thame United Reserves. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS SSMFL Committee member Dave Henman sends this report from his travels on Saturday. I revisited Cockfosters after a 3 year absence but my focus was on the opposition, namely Tring Athletic who are still in the South Midlands League. I went with low expectations bearing in mind Tring’s precarious league position, and with the hosts just over halfway up their league. Boy, was I in for a very pleasant shock! The game started with Tring penned in their own half, and having difficulty in keeping Cockfosters at bay. In their first foray into home territory they took the lead with a neat move. From a short corner the ball was played to captain Keiran Turner 25 yards out. He unleashed a decent shot which the keeper failed to hold and George Carberry was in the right place to follow up after 7 minutes. The talking incident happened after 10/15 minutes when Tring were about to defend a corner. There was the usual jostling, and a touch of handbags when Cockfoster’s Charncey Dash took it upon himself to head-butt a defender – or so it seemed. Apart a brief “argument” the referee went to speak to the assistant for guidance/clarification. With that a straight red was issued. It was a needless act by the Cockfosters number nine. If my memory serves me right he played for Tring early last season, before the mass evacuation occurred mid-season. Maybe he had a grudge to settle? Who knows? Anyway Cockfoster’s passing went very much astray and they were finding Tring’s players, rather than their own. You could see Tring growing in confidence as the game progressed and they scored their second after 39 minutes courtesy of John Smith. What Cockfosters needed as soon as the second half began was a quick goal to get back into the game. The opposite happened after 47 minutes when some lovely passing movement led to Emmanuel Gbejuade slipping the ball into the empty net. But where were the Cockfosters defence – playing statues. By now it was game over and you could see the homesters’ heads drop, whilst Tring were gaining in confidence all the time. The final goal by George Carberry after 87 minutes was merely icing on the cake. When the majority of our sides fell by the wayside in the Vase it was nice to see an unexpected, but thoroughly deserved win. Tring also bought a fair number of supporters in what I estimated to be a crowd of 100 to 120.

On This Day—27th November 2007 A goal in the 91st minute from Darren Caseman finally clinched a 3-2 victory over a plucky Harpenden Town side to take us through to the semi-final of the Herts Charity Shield. It took a very late intervention to decide this changing Herts Charity Shield tie. The hero of the hour was Darren Caseman whose goal in added time was good for the environment, Harpenden’s electricity bill and most importantly of all our nerves by eradicating the need for 30 minutes of extra time. This game swung one way then the other until the 91st minute when Trevor Gibbs produced a moment of great skill to set Ty North free on the left and his exquisite cross was powerfully headed home by Darren. It was a quality goal somewhat out of keeping with the rest of the game. It was also harsh on a gallant Harpenden side that belied their lowly position in Division 1 with a committed performance which made them look the better side for much of the 2nd half. Cup ties have a habit of upsetting the apple cart and there were some other indicators to suggest this was not going to be an easy night for us. This includes the fact that the game was being played on a ground which has been a grave yard for us over the years with just 1 win in 13 visits, and that we were missing a number of key players and put out a much changed side. There was a debut for Paul Swendell at centre back, a first start of the season for keeper Dave “Badger” Adamson, a return for Dave Whicker after some weeks and a second consecutive start for promising young defender Dave Salmon. In the absence of Dave Foskett the captain’s arm band was handed to Steve Hutchins, the first time he has taken on the role of skipper. Never-the-less there was still enough quality and first team experience for optimism, but the alarm bells started ringing when for the 2nd game running we got our offside tactics wrong and conceded an early goal. In the 3rd minute whilst our defence was waiting for the linesman’s flag to go up, Ben Dawes got on with the task of beating Dave Adamson to a long ball to put his side 1-0 ahead. Despite this early setback we settled down quickly to play football which was not easy on a tricky surface made difficult by the wet weather. We had a lot of possession but with Harpenden wanting to protect their lead they got players behind the ball and defended well. Offensively the home side made use of the long ball to try and emulate their early success. Without Mark Burfoot and Vinnie Iannone we did not have a natural target man and precision of pass was therefore essential to open up a tightly packed defence. Regrettably our final pass was not accurate enough and our moves tended to break down on the edge of the area and we didn’t greatly trouble Mark Beck in the home goal. When we did penetrate the penalty area the danger was soon cleared by the home defence well marshalled by their skipper Andrew Saul.

Harpenden Town 2-3 TAFC Within the space of 3 minutes after the interval there was a dramatic turn around after we scored 2 goals to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage. An early corner was headed out by a home defender but it struck someone and bounced back into the area and Chris Salmon, who had his back to goal, quickly took advantage to score a spectacular goal with an overhead kick to level the score. This was his 4th goal of the season a great return for a defender. This gave us a great boost and from the re-start we went straight on the attack again with Darren Caseman’s tricky run into the box being halted by a trip. The Referee immediately pointed to the spot and Trevor Gibbs coolly slotted home the penalty to complete a remarkably quick recovery to put us 2-1 ahead. It was Trevor’s 8th goal of the season and makes him the First Team’s leading scorer. Harpenden were forced to come out and get back into the game and they had their best spell, playing the ball around in contrast to the long ball tactics of the first half. It was now our turn to look for the quick breaks, and from a run down the right David Salmon produced a great cross which Ali Thornley was unable to get on the end of after a nudge in the back from behind. The ball fell to Rob Duncan beyond the far post and he smashed a thunderous shot back across goal which was not too far away. Andrew Saul saw his header from a corner clip the top of our bar and he later forced David Adamson to push another header round the post. The home side whipped in some dangerous crosses and only good interceptions by Paul Swendell and David Salmon prevented certain goals. We were treated to the rare sight of Rob Duncan getting booked for a tackle which will no doubt go down in the Guinness Book of Records! Harpenden were on top and controlling the play although we had a couple of moments, such as when David Whicker tested the keeper with a free kick and Darren Caseman broke through the middle only to be denied a one on one with the keeper by a superb tackle from the defender. The home side won a number of corners and were looking more and more dangerous. We were contributing to our own problems by giving the ball away too easily and with 10 minutes to go we finally shot ourselves in the foot with a poor piece of defending. We had the chance to clear the danger but the ball was sliced sideways giving Harpenden another opportunity to put the ball back in the mixer where Andrew Saul was waiting unmarked to head home and bring the scores level at 2-2. It was perhaps fitting that Saul should score because he was outstanding in the centre of the home defence. The gamblers amongst our supporters would have put their money on Harpenden to win as the initiative seemed to now rest with them. But Ali Thornley gave us a ray of hope when he beat the keeper to a through ball and slipped it past him towards the goal but that man Saul got back to clear. With time running out and extra time looming Trevor Gibbs and Ty North produced a moment of quality and Darren Caseman came to our rescue with his 6th goal of the season to make the final score 3-2. Athletic: Dave Adamson, David Salmon, Ty North, Chris Salmon, Paul Swendell (Terry Phillips 74), Steve Hutchins (Capt) (Sam Wilkinson 78), David Whicker, Trevor Gibbs, Darren Caseman, Ali Thornley, Rob Duncan (Danny Gray 62). Goals: Chris Salmon (46), Trevor Gibbs (47), Darren Caseman (90+1).
