CA NEWS Trilogy Moving Forward Almost a year has passed since the first Trilogy Moving Forward Article. The Trilogy at Power Ranch Board of Directors (Board) has accomplished many things during this time. It’s now time to look forward to 2026.

First, please let Michele know if you find this article useful and want the Board to continue to do this monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly. The Board wants to keep the residents informed.

The Board will be back to the full seven members for 20262027. There are steps the Board will take to ensure that Trilogy moves forward in 2026. This is just the beginning of the year and throughout the year items will be added and each of these items will be monitored for completion.

CA NEWS Message From the Board Steve Loney, Board Member

Community Governance Updates and Looking Ahead As our neighborhood continues to grow and evolve, community participation remains at the heart of thoughtful governance. This spring brings several important developments, including board elections, a key financial vote, and long-term planning initiatives designed to guide our shared future.

Residents are currently voting to elect three members to the Board, an essential process that ensures continued leadership, oversight, and representation within the community. Alongside the board elections, members are also being asked to vote on the adoption of IRS Revenue Ruling 70-604, which relates to any funds left over from one year. Adoption of this ruling allows those funds to be rolled over to the next year, helping us avoid additional taxation. For a more thorough explanation, please refer to Michele’s article in the February San Tan Press. Approval of this measure will help ensure our financial practices remain transparent, compliant, and aligned with best practices.

Voting for both items concludes on March 4, and achieving a quorum is required for the results to be valid. Community participation is therefore especially important, as reaching quorum allows these governance and financial matters to move forward.

In addition to these votes, the Planning Committee recently shared progress on a strategic five-year plan focused on sustainability, amenities, and long-term community values.

A work session was held to review completed items and to identify initiatives that need continued attention or

reprioritization based on changes within our community.

As part of this planning effort, residents can expect a community-wide satisfaction survey to be distributed during the first and second quarter of this year, providing each household with an opportunity to share feedback and priorities with the Board.

This information is a valuable part of the process. The Board recognizes the importance of measuring each project to ensure accountability in reaching established goals. Additionally, understanding the demographics of our community will help us better assess resident needs and priorities.

The committee is also actively conducting a feasibility study for developing our café, exploring whether such a space would be financially viable and beneficial for residents as a future community amenity.

Together, these initiatives reflect an ongoing commitment to responsible governance, financial stewardship, and thoughtful planning. Resident engagement—through voting, surveys, and participation—continues to play a vital role in shaping the direction of our neighborhood.

Celebrating the Heart of our Community: Our Volunteers In every strong community, there are quiet heroes who step forward, not for recognition, but because they care. In our association, those heroes are our volunteers. They are the neighbors who stay late after events to help clean up, the committee members who spend evenings reviewing documents and sharing ideas, and the friendly faces who welcome new residents and help them feel at home. This month, we will honor the volunteers that give countless hours of their time to our community at the Volunteer Appreciation event. Our community thrives because of the dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to make Trilogy at Power Ranch a better place for everyone.

The volunteers efforts show up in so many ways: a wellorganized community activity, a clearer policy, providing audio, visual and lighting for an event, writing content for the San Tan Press to keep everyone informed, or providing delicious food for our events prepared by the Misfits in our café kitchen. When a holiday gathering feels seamless, when a new project moves forward, or when a concern is addressed quickly and thoughtfully, or you just won at Sunday bingo, chances are there is a volunteer behind the scenes helping to make it happen. Their gifts of time, talent, and perspective make our association not just a place to live, but a place to belong.

Volunteering also strengthens the fabric of our neighborhood. As residents work together on projects, serve on boards or committees, or assist with short-term tasks, they build relationships and understanding. People who might never have met discover common ground and shared goals. That sense of connection helps us navigate challenges more constructively and celebrate successes more fully. In many ways, the volunteers help define the culture of our community.

If you are one of the many people who has served or is currently serving, thank you. Your dedication is noticed in the cleaner paths, the better communication, and the warmer sense of community we all enjoy. If you have been thinking about getting involved, we invite you to join in.

Whether you have an hour a month or a few hours a week, there is a place for your skills and ideas. Together, we can continue to build a community we are proud to call home.

Did You Know?

If you have a rental, and you want to rent to someone under the age of 55, or includes minor children under the age of 18, it requires an application and approval by the Board.

Why? To maintain our 55+ designation, we have to verify that we meet our CCR’s and federal and state law on age verification processes at least every two years to confirm that at least 80% of occupied lots still have an occupant 55+. The Board of Directors has the authority to provide exemptions to residents under age for extraordinary circumstances unless the granting of permission would jeopardize the community’s status as “housing for older persons” under the Fair Housing Act. If you are renting your home, and the individuals are not appropriate or minors, please ensure your tenants complete the proper board approval prior to signing a lease to rent your home.

The Town of Gilbert is hosting a water conservation workshop each month to educate residents on water conservation. The monthly meeting is held the 4th Wednesday at 9 am in the Ballroom. The March workshop is “Control Your Irrigation Controller” which will provide tips to help you water your plants more effectively and reduce your water use. This class is free to all Trilogy residents.

I urge you to take advantage of this great opportunity to conserve water at your home.

Water Conservation continues to be a high priority as we move forward towards less water use and more drought tolerant, sustainable landscaping in our community is introduced. I would encourage each of you to attend and participate in the discussions as they are announced.

You Go Girl Meetups - You Go Girl provides six meetups each year to support women in Trilogy who would like to meet ohers in a smaller venue and create connections especially for those who live alone or are experiencing a new season in their lives. Here are other ways the Band of Angels is assisting Trilogy residents: Angel Contact Group – Angel volunteers are available to provide Daily Check In phone call service; and will also make a friendly visit to check in with the residents. This group also helps residents in our community who have been ill, injured, or have experienced the loss of a loved one. Angel Contact Group volunteers provide the following types of contacts to Trilogy residents: mail a special handmade get-well card to a resident experiencing an illness and an angel to a resident who has been seriously ill, injured, or has experienced the loss of a loved one.

A recent addition to the Angels’ services is the meal delivery program. This is a meal purchased by the Angels for a resident whose life has been suddenly affected by health or life change. Also, bowl cozies to safely warm food in the microwave will be available with or without food delivery. If you have a Trilogy friend or neighbor who you think would benefit from a home-delivered meal or any other angel contact, please call Monika Gilbert at 949300-3961.

Equipment - We have equipment available for residents and their guests to borrow for up to 90 days. This includes commodes, wheelchairs (both transport and traditional), walkers, seated walkers, shower chairs, knee scooters, bed rails, wheelchair ramps, canes and crutches, ice machines, etc. Also available to borrow are room monitors, two with cameras.

Equipment is available for loan and return only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call or text Linda Ray (480-3383730) for an appointment.

ART The time is almost here for the Trilogy Art Club’s Annual Art Show & Sale on Saturday, March 7, from 8 am to noon in the Clubhouse Grand Living Room. There will be a wide range of creative works on sale or display, and pet commissions will be offered.

Members will be available to answer questions about club activities and workshops.

A special selection of ‘Art from the Heart’ paintings will be on sale with proceeds going to our own Trilogy’s Band of Angels. A popular feature of the sale, the painting demonstrations, will be given again.

BOARDS & DECKS Hello Trilogy. March is here and with it the Boards and Decks Club welcome you to join our weekly games.

We also have a weekly social time on Saturday night at 6 pm in the Clubhouse. Come join us for games, snacks and bring your own beverages. This Saturday evening get-together is open to everyone in Trilogy On Sunday, March 22, the Boards and Decks Club is sponsoring Lucky 13. This is a form of card bingo. We begin at 1:30 pm in the Catalina Room. Bring nine quarters and a single dollar bill to participate. We will play ten separate games, and you must be 18 years old to play. Come join us for an enjoyable afternoon.

BOCCE The bocce courts will be busy this month. Leagues will wrap up, tournaments will be played, our monthly Birthday/Anniversary Bash will be celebrated, and the Spring Fling dinner enjoyed.

The Winter Leagues will finish this month with the Men’s League winners and the Women’s League winners squaring off for the Challenge Cup. There will also be a luncheon for league players.

Our annual Wall Tournament will be held on March 6-7. Every ball must hit a wall in this one. Then on March 20-21 we will play our Farewell Tournament as our winter visitors take their leave.

Birthdays and Anniversaries will be celebrated on March 21.

Our seasonal wrap-up will be our Spring Fling dinner on March 22 in the Ballroom, which will also be our annual meeting and election of officers. Morning open rolling begins at 9 am.

BRIDGE The Bridge Club is active year-round, meeting in the Catalina Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Social from 12:30-3 pm, contact Deb Heim at 701-269-1725) or Wednesday evenings (Duplicate from 6-9 pm, contact Anne Stuckey at 262-4240969). Duplicate bridge does require a partner. Judy Edinger (480-622-3324) is willing to find a partner for you.

Our year runs from January through December. There is a $5 charge to join the club. Registration forms may be found in the Catalina Room.

Bridge players, put on your calendar the date of March 14 for the annual Memorial Tournament to be held in the Catalina Room. The annual meeting for the Bridge Club will be held at 9:30 am followed by bridge at 10 am. Light refreshments will be provided.

BUNCO Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and ( to play. No yearly dues or membership is required. Everyone pays $5 each bunco night which goes into the winning payouts that night, so you aren’t really joining the Bunco Club. Everyone is welcome at any time.

Bunco Club generally plays on the last Monday of each month.

If a holiday falls on the last Monday, bunco will be played on the prior Monday.

Check-in starts at 6 pm. Bunco starts at 6:30 in the Catalina (card) Room. The game ends at 8:45 or 9 pm.

CERAMICS Hello Trilogy. Ceramics members have the room every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to noon. Some members only come on one of the days and others come on all three days: it’s your choice. As a member you also have access to the room on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when we share the room with the Scrapbooking Club. We are always accepting new members and our annual membership dues are only $15.

Our president, Julie Schmidt, is planning new classes for every Tuesday. You may be creating your piece from ‘clay,’ or you may be learning a new painting technique. We have sign-ups in the Ceramics Room. Please plan to join some of these fun new classes. We will have other classes to follow in the coming months. A great start to 2026.

EUCHRE March is the month when everyone is Irish. Gather your favorite green shirt and join us for euchre. Then hope for a little of that Irish luck to shine down on your cards!

COMPANY OF FRIENDS Company of Friend’s New Years Around the World Potluck was a tremendous success, thanks to amazing chefs. Special appreciation goes to Pat Kilber and her committee for organizing the event.

The club meets in the Catalina Room on Tuesday nights. Play starts at 6:30 pm. Cost is $2 per person. The top four-point totals get payouts. Please sign up in advance for Tuesday play by emailing tpreuchre@gmail.com, or calling 480-256-9487, or Sheila Overturf at 614-558-5543.

In February we held a dessert auction to raise funds for Ryan House, which provides a caregiving home for children with lifelimiting medical conditions. Members and guests participated generously in bidding for desserts and gift baskets.

Euchre is also played on Thursday afternoons at 1 pm for those wanting to learn or brush up their skills or play for fun. There is no sign-up. See what we are all about!

There is still time to purchase tickets for Trivia Night on March 7 from 6 to 8 pm in the Ballroom. This event is open to all Trilogy residents and will feature a new format using paper and pencils, with no phones. Form a team of eight or simply come and be placed with a team. This is a fundraiser for House of Refuge, supporting their efforts to help families transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Tickets are available for $18 on Purple Pass.

The speaker for the March 19 meeting will be Bonnie Bossert. The subject of Bonnie’s presentation will be: One Year Later with AI: Where We Came From and Where We’re Going. Have you heard about or dabbled with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that seem to be everywhere? We’ll explore how AI transforms genealogy, making it easier than ever to uncover and preserve family history. We’ll highlight practical applications of AI to enhance your research. We will discuss key AI tools, demonstrate their use, and address ethical considerations. Bonnie is an experienced family historian and genetic genealogy DNA and adoption researcher with over 25 years of activity in genealogy and related fields. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend.

HIKING The hiking season is slowly ending as we hold our annual Hiking Club overnight in the Tucson area exploring the western Saguaro National Park. The 2025-2026 Hiking Club season has been a huge success with new members joining the club, scenic hikes led by our trained hiking leaders and several special Hiking Club events.

A Hiking Club tip: “The use of a hiking stick is very beneficial for hikers especially when hiking downhill. A hiker should keep the hiking stick on the edge side of the trail that may have a drop-off, as most hiking falls are not uphill. Pebbles, gravel and small rocks can be slippery and may turn your hike into a slip and slide event. A hiking stick can provide more stability when the trail is slick.“ LADIES TLGA Holes in one are rare - just as rare are eagles on Par 4s. (2 on a par four). Our very own Debbie Arangio hit the perfect second shot into Green #2 and her ball disappeared into the cup.

LADY NINERS Our ladies are busy, as usual…

The competition brings together Nine Hole Leagues from all over the state. Thank you for representing us well, Ladies! There is also a separate competition for 18-hole groups.

Purple is the winner this season. The Purple and Green Tournament was a little stressful, but lots of fun under the able direction of Lisa Stowe and her committee. The pairings were right on with many groups tying at the end of the rounds. Match play is always challenging but also rewarding…this time for the Purple Team.

Each year, our ladies choose a charity for donations during the holiday season. This year, Sunshine Acres, a nonprofit providing good homes for children in need, was the recipient of $503 collected during the Holiday Luncheon. We recently received a very sweet ‘thank you’ from the group. Thanks to Sue Berg for selecting this charity to receive our support.

LINE DANCE Dance can bring people together in a way that few other activities can. Participating in dance provides an opportunity to make friends, build relationships, and form strong bonds with others in the community.

And it works! Not only was our dance a success, but we have more than 20 new members that have joined the beginner class. Come join us – it’s a great opportunity to make friends and exercise.

CLUBS OF TRILOGY AT POWER RANCH Tuesday class for intermediate dancers is at 1 pm in the Ballroom.

Wednesday class is for beginners at 1 pm in the San Tan Room (dance studio accessible on golf course side of the Clubhouse).

If you are trying us out, come on Wednesday at 12:40 to learn a few basic steps. Your first class is free. After that, you can purchase a $24 punch card before class for six lessons. Club dues is $10 per year.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Catalina Room and Grand Living Room have been abuzz and busy on our Mah Jongg play days. Let’s keep the good times rolling.

Rebecca Reber (pictured) has done it again! In January, she scored her second 15 Wonders hand while playing the Filipino version of Mah Jongg.

PICKLEBALL The Pickleball Club has been busy with club Social’s, Round Robins, Drills and Skills, Love of the Game Charity Event and just lots of club and community play.

Our February charity event, Love of the Game, was a success.

Our club was able to raise enough money to provide a piece of equipment for stair step strengthening for our Trilogy Fitness Center.

We are happy to be able to give back to our community.

QUILTERS The Quilters Club recently completed a highly successful 2026 Trilogy Quilt Show, featuring more than 120 quilts created by our talented members. The quilts were sold and donated, and a majority of the proceeds, including earnings from the Marketplace Store, were distributed as financial gifts to more than a dozen local charities.

Our members donate diapers, quilts, and handmade baby items to this nonprofit, which provides free parenting education, life-skills training, and compassionate care to pregnant mothers.

SCRAPBOOK The Scrapbook Club invites all paper crafters and those interested in learning about our hobby to join us at one of our weekly gatherings. The cost of store-bought cards continues to soar. Join our club and learn how to make your own cards.

Come and go at any time during the day, Wednesday starting at 9 am and Thursdays after 6 pm. Working on projects in a communal environment encourages creativity, motivates members to try new techniques, and facilitates making new friends.

An advantage of membership is having access to all the club’s supplies. Supplies include paper trimmers, many stamp

sets, dies, die cut machines including an older Cricut with many cartridges, embossing folders, inks, and punches plus a variety of card stock and pattern paper, ribbon, and assorted embellishments and stickers for members to use when creating a card or scrapbook page.

Dust off your poodle skirts, disco outfits, and neon in closet and join the Tennis Club for a night of fun in the Trilogy Ballroom.

We are excited to have live music from one of Arizona’s premier varieties bands, Outside the Line. Tickets are $30 and will go fast. BYOB and enjoy a night of 50s, 60s and 70s classics.

THEATRE Famed golfer Arnold Palmer said, “The road to success is always under construction” and we are always building new things.

SINGERS Trilogy Singers are delighted to share that in preparation for the spring season, regular rehearsals have resumed on Monday evenings. We also welcome new members to join us—no previous experience necessary, just a love of singing and community.

We’re in the last days of our rehearsals for the play. Go on Purple Pass and get your tickets today before they’re gone! Performances are Friday, March 27, Saturday, March 28 and Sunday Matinee, March 29. It promises to be a funny performance.

STAINED GLASS The club started the new year with a bang by completing a 24-hour class program on the art of stained glass and welcomed six new members at a Welcome Luncheon on January 28. Our annual meeting was held on February 17.

We will be adding another class for those interested in joining the club this year as well as some refresher classes for current members. The club is also changing how we notify everyone of new class opportunities. We will be publicizing the classes under Lifestyle events. This will allow us to reach all Trilogy homeowners and streamline the process.

TENNIS Why not give a tennis a try? The Trilogy Tennis Club has made it even easier to get involved with our new tennis court reservation system. Start at www.trilogyprtc.com and then click on the Tennis Court Rese…link. The system is intuitive and easy to use.

In addition to our court reservation system, we have no reservation necessary, open play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 10 am. Open play is a great time to make some new friends, and test your skill against some of Trilogy’s tennis veterans.

Saturday, March 21, from 6:30-9:30 pm is The Decades Dance.

Building on an enjoyable evening we saw “Beau Jest” at Hale Theatre, and we have another outing planned in April – She Loves Me. Also in April is our end-of-year gathering, stay tuned for more information.

When the Theatre Club has a business meeting, it is always the second Saturday of the month at 9 am, in either the Ballroom or the Multi-purpose Room. Announcements will be sent out via email with details about the meeting. So, until we meet again, remember the words of Mark Twain who said “Life’s best therapy? Laughter.”

TRAVEL In January 52 Trilogy residents and friends cruised with the Travel Club down the western Mexican coast on the Emerald Princess. Highlights of this adventure included a close-up encounter with a whale and our own Trilogy resident Addie Abbruscato winning the ship’s dance competition.

The next meeting of the Trilogy Travel Club will be on Thursday, April 23, at 4 pm in the Catalina Room.

All Trilogy residents are welcome, and there is no dues requirement to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Our theme for this year’s Potluck was ‘Hog Wild’ in celebration of Iowa farmers and that Iowa is the largest producer of pork in America. There were over 80 Iowans in attendance. WINE & DINE Are you curious about the Wine and Dine Group? We are a friendly, social group that gets together once a month in small groups at each other’s homes, typically six to eight people per home. Each month, the Host home changes, as do the guests at each home. The Host home provides the entree, side dish, coffee, water and dinnerware. The guests bring one of the following: an appetizer, salad or dessert.

Drinking wine is not a requirement. Guests bring their own beverage. You do not need to be a gourmet cook. We have a variety of food themes and meat choices throughout the year to appeal to all types of cooks and appetites. This month the meat option is beef.

Minnesota Vikings 2025 NFL Fan of the Year Fran Molleur

One of our winter residents, Leanne Adkins has been named the Minnesota Vikings 2025 Fan of the Year (FOTY).

On February 6th, she flew to San Francisco CA to not only attend the 2025 Super Bowl in person but to participate in many Super Bowl activities.

Leanne lives in Eagan MN during the summer months.

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Pease, Minnesota, Adkins said she spent Sundays at the farm watching the Purple and Gold with her father, Henry “Hank” Veurink, who inspired her lifelong love for the team.

Her enthusiasm for the Vikings is contagious. She encourages others to embrace the game-day experience by sharing her season tickets with family and friends, organizing tailgates on the road and connecting with local Vikings fan groups outside Minnesota. She has a unique ability to make strangers, and even opposing fans, feel like family on game day.

Leanne’s trip to the Super Bowl was a dream come true and she has shared this fantastic adventure with us in her own words.

Day 1 - We stayed on Fisherman’s Wharf & went for a walk that morning. We bought some Super Bowl souvenirs & realized Jerry Rice was there. We got autographs & pics with this former SF 49ers NFL Legend.

She later dedicated a Legacy Leanne at the NFL Honors Brick at U.S. Bank Stadium to him, engraved with a quote from the late Vikings head coach Bud Grant: “We have no leadership. They rule by herd. Nobody is in charge. It reminds me of a bunch of cows.” The inscription honors her family’s dairy farm roots and shared love for the Vikings.

As a mother of three, she continued her father’s legacy by passing her love for Vikings football to her children.

Leanne, a single mother, volunteered with Raise The Barr, founded by former Vikings player Anthony Barr, which helps single-parent families.

She also started a LARK, Ladies Acts of Random Kindness, group in Eagan. Each month, its 12 members contribute $20, and the host chooses a charity to receive the funds. Since starting, the group has donated more than $35,000 to local causes, such as helping families in need and creating care packages for elderly and disabled neighbors.

Leanne has been a Vikings season ticket holder since 2013, the team’s final year at the Metrodome. She braved some of the coldest outdoor games in Vikings history at TCF Bank Stadium in 2014–15 and celebrated the opening of U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016. She also started a tradition of traveling to at least one Vikings road game each season with her three children, extended family, and friends. Her goal is to attend a Vikings game at every NFL stadium. By the end of the 2025-26 season, she will have visited 18 of the 30 current stadiums.

That evening we went to NFL Honors. This is an event that honors “the best of the best in the NFL” such as MVP, Coach of the Year, Offensive & Defensive Player of the Year, etc. The event was hosted at Palace of Fine Arts in SF. All 32 of the FOTY & their guests had an opportunity to walk the red carpet prior to the NFL stars arriving. There were photo opportunities with some of these elite NFL athletes. The highlight for me was pics & conversation with CJ Ham & his wife Stephanie on the red carpet. CJ Ham was the MN Vikings Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. The FOTY & their guests participated in the program & presentation of all the NFL Awards. Truly a magical, once in a lifetime experience.

Day 2 - After our breakfast at the hotel, we headed to Fisherman’s Wharf to board a boat to Alcatraz. We had a selfguided tour to understand the history of Alcatraz, saw great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, & observed beautiful greenery & foliage. After getting off the boat, we enjoyed a lunch of fish & chips on Pier 39. While eating lunch we saw Brock Prudy, QB of the SF 49er’s.

a 90-minute bus ride to the stadium. Upon arriving at the stadium, we proceeded through the gates for our on-field experience. There were many photo opportunities on our walk into the stadium. All 32 FOTY were escorted onto the field to be recognized for their contributions to their individual organizations. It truly was a surreal moment to be standing in the end zone where the SB was going to be played. Security was very tight to get on the field, but I had the opportunity to meet a police officer that was a huge Vikings fan so that was very cool.

Welcome to Alcatraz

Later that afternoon, we went to the NFL experience at the Moscone Convention Center. All 32 NFL teams were represented at this venue with many contests & games for kids, many photo opportunities with props from your favorite team, photo opportunity with the Vince Lombardi trophy & several opportunities for autographs with previous & current NFL players. I got autographs with Alexander Mattison, RB Miami Dolphins, Chase Brown, RB Cincinnati Bengals, & Cam Jordon, DE New Orleans Saints.

We then were free to explore the stadium & make our way to our seats. Our seats were in 404 so certainly not the best but they were paid for by the NFL & we were able to experience all the pregame activities on the field including singing of America the Beautiful by Brandi Carlile & our National Anthem

by Charlie Puth. Pregame ended with a flyover which was amazing. Halftime entertainment was Bad Bunny & several other performers including Lady Gaga. The game was never very close but there was a very large representation of Seattle Seahawks fans who were all very happy.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget.

I made many new friends from several other teams & realized that players are real people. I will be ever indebted to the MN Vikings & the NFL and their sponsors for this program & choosing me as the Minnesota FOTY! SKOL Vikes!

After returning to the hotel, we had a wonderful dinner on Fisherman’s Wharf at Scoma with the FOTY from Philadelphia Eagles & FOTY from Chicago Bears.

Day 3 - We spent the entire day at the NFL Experience, Moscone Center. We got autographs & photos with Trey McBride, TE AZ Cardinal; Eli Manning, former QB NY Giants; Rome Odunze, WR Chicago Bears; Kirk Cousins, QB Atlanta Falcons; & Aaron Jones, RB MN Vikings. There were several HOF & current NFL players there, but you had to choose your favorites because of the large crowds & long lines. It was amazing to me that through all the autographs & photo opportunities with the players, they were kind, respectful & very thankful for the support they receive from their fans.

We ended our day with a lovely Italian dinner & wine - we needed it!!

Day 4 - SUPER BOWL Sunday had finally arrived! We boarded a bus & headed to Santa Clara to Levi Stadium. It was roughly

To Statin or Not to Statin Candy Purdy

Ray, a retired 65-year-old businessman went to his internist for his yearly wellness exam and preceded it with a blood test called a Lipid Panel that measures cholesterol levels. His doctor informed him that his LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol level was far too high at 195 and his total cholesterol was 270.

“This indicates the bad cholesterol that can build up on the inside of your blood vessels forming plaque is increasing your risk of heart disease. I want to prescribe a medication commonly called a statin to lower this level. Ray frowned, “I’ve heard those statins cause side effects like muscle pain and “brain fog” so I don’t want to take those.” he replied. “Can’t I just lose weight by changing my diet or exercise more? I’ve already given up smoking.”

“I encourage you to make those changes, but I am concerned that won’t be enough given your family history of high cholesterol, Ray.” responded the doctor. “We need to get this cholesterol down much faster and farther than lifestyle changes can accomplish. Statins will also help reduce inflammation in your artery walls that can lead to blockages in the heart and brain.

If side effects develop, we will deal with them.” Ultimately, Ray left the office with a prescription for Pravacol (pravastatin) and orders for another blood test in 6 weeks. Then he will have his blood tested at 3 months and every year to monitor his cholesterol level and his liver functions. He was told to call the doctor if any side effects developed.

This scenario has been repeated thousands of times across the country since statins became available in 1987. When used as indicated, statin drugs reduce people’s chances of having heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, needing surgery or stents and dying of cardiovascular conditions. They are the best ammunition the medical community could have hoped for in preventing the number one cause of death in the United States -heart disease.

The Statin Double Punch Although some cholesterol in our blood comes from food we eat, most is made by our liver. This is where statins can deliver their first blow.

Statins can reduce the amount of cholesterol made by the liver by blocking an enzyme the liver needs to make cholesterol. Since less cholesterol is being made, the liver makes more receptors to pull cholesterol from the blood. Typically, statins can reduce cholesterol levels by as much as 30 % to 50%. A statin drug’s second punch is to stabilize the plaque that has already formed inside the arteries and reduce inflammation in the walls of the arteries that can lead to blockages. Taken along with the lifestyle changes Ray has already begun, a statin will greatly reduce his risk of cardiovascular disease.

Potential Side Effects Most people tolerate statins well. It is important to inform your doctor about all the other medicines you are taking before 34 MARCH 2026

starting a statin.

Muscle Soreness. One of the most common complaints of people taking statins is muscle soreness and pain. For some, it is mild and they can work through or don’t even realize it is being caused by the statin. For others, it’s so severe they stop taking the medication. Instead, their doctor could have tried switching them to a different type of statin such as simvastatin (Zocor) or lovastatin (Altoprev) which might not cause pain. Changing the dose might also eliminate soreness. Because this side effect is well known, the “nocebo” effect sometimes tricks patients into thinking they have muscle pain from statins simply because they expect to. Only about ten to fifteen percent of statin users have muscle pain from statins. One study showed that the true frequency of muscle pain from statins was about 5% compared with taking a placebo containing no medicine. However, there is a condition called Rhabdomyolysis which can cause extreme muscle pain, and kidney failure when statins are taken in combination with certain other medicines. This occurs in only a few cases per million.

General Side Effects. Headaches, digestive issues (gas, constipation, diarrhea) nausea, fatigue, sleep problems, and dizziness have been reported by some users.

Liver and Kidney Effects. Inflammation of the liver can happen because of statin use so this is why Ray’s doctor ordered a liver enzyme test after he began taking a statin. Symptoms of this side effect might be unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, yellowing skin, or dark colored urine.

Increase in Blood Sugar. A warning label on the statin prescription may also mention the drug can increase blood sugar (glucose) leading to Type 2 diabetes. This increase is usually small and should not be a concern unless these levels were already high.

Diabetics are prescribed statins because the benefit of lowering heart attack risk often outweighs the slight increase in glucose level. A person with prediabetes would want to discuss this issue with a doctor before taking a statin.

Effect on Memory. This controversial side effect concerns

memory loss and confusion while taking statins. The FDA warns that some people have developed confusion (brain fog) and memory loss while taking statins. These effects reverse once you stop taking the medicine. There is little proof of a cause-effect relationship. In fact, The National Institutes of Health reviewed 55 studies involving over seven million patients and concluded statin use reduced the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. The debate goes on so, what some physicians suggest is that patients try a statin and if they experience brain fog, switch to a different statin and monitor the effects. Not all statins are covered by Medicare, or a patient may need to try generic brands to get coverage but there are many different drugs from which to choose.

Drug Interactions Some foods and medicines don’t mix well with statins. Perhaps you have heard someone say, “I can’t eat grapefruit because I take a statin.” True. There is a compound in grapefruit that blocks an enzyme in the intestines that breaks down statins preventing too much statin from entering your blood stream.

Without that enzyme there is a risk of liver and /or muscle damage.

A few of the medicines that may interact with statins include: • Amiodarone (Pacerone) a drug for irregular heartbeats • Gemfibrozil (Lopid)-a cholesterol drug • HIV treatments called protease inhibitor • Some antibiotics and antifungals (check with your doctor) • Some immunosuppressants like cyclosporine • Blood thinners like Warfarin • Some calcium channel blockers like amlodipine (Norvasc) diltiazem (Cardizem, and verapamil (Verelan) may alter the level of statin intended or cause muscle damage • Danazol, a hormone to treat conditions such as endometriosis • Fibrates medicines are also used for lowering cholesterol Things That Increase Risk Some people may be at greater risk of developing statin side effects. These could include people who: 1. Have kidney or liver disease 2. Take multiple medicines to lower cholesterol 3. Take medicines that interact with statins 4. Have a family history of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis 5. Are 70-80 or older 6. Drink large amounts of alcohol 7. Have hypothyroidism or neuromuscular conditions like ALS 8. Are pregnant or breastfeeding Some Alternative Drugs for Lowering Cholesterol Repatha (evolocumab) is a type of drug that inhibits the PCSK9 protein allowing the liver to remove more LDL cholesterol from the blood. It is prescribed for people with an inherited type of high cholesterol, those who can’t take statins and sometimes along with statins. Unlike statins which come in pill form, Repatha comes in ready-to-inject pens and is given every two weeks. It is more expensive than statins, but some consider it safer than statins. In August 2025 the FDA approved Repatha for use in a larger group of adults (including those who have had heart attacks) because it can stabilize plaque inside artery walls.

To get insurance coverage, patients may have to try more than one statin drug before insurance will pay for Repatha.

Bempedoic Acid

(brand names Nexletol or Nexlizet) are

alternative non-statin pills that are metabolized in the liver and can reduce the chances of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes and the need for stent procedures without muscle side effects. It can reduce cholesterol 17 to 28 percent which is less effective than statins. Bempedoic acid can also be used in conjunction with statins, and another plus is that it can lower blood sugar levels. It is not recommended for people who have had gout, kidney or liver problems or a history of tendon problems. Side effects can include increased cold or flu symptoms, back pain, stomach pain, joint pain, tendon rupture, and gall stones. It is covered by Medicare Part D. Leqvio (inclisiran)is the newest cholesterol-lowering drug on the market. It is given as a twice-a-year injection by a medical provider. This drug accomplishes the same thing as Repatharemoving cholesterol from the blood chemically by blocking the protein that reduces the number of receptors in the liver that clear cholesterol from the blood. Because it uses the body’s RNA to alter liver function, it doesn’t have to be taken as often.

Most of the side effects like joint pain, injection site reactions, and bronchitis are short term and go away on their own. Users are often advised to avoid drinking alcohol while taking this drug and some doctors prefer patients using Leqvio take a statin as well to lower cholesterol even more. Leqvio is covered by Medicare.

Weighing the benefits and risks with your doctor is a necessary step when considering adding a statin to your medicine cabinet.

There is no question these drugs are effective at lowering LDL cholesterol, thus lowering the risk of cardiovascular health problems. As mentioned, some people report muscle pain, and a variety of other side effects A compromise might be to try the statin suggested by your physician and if side effects develop don’t stop taking the pills. Discuss the symptoms with your doctor. Changing the dose, switching to a different statin or trying an alternative drug may eliminate the side effect without sacrificing the long-term goal of protecting your circulatory system and living a longer healthier life. Afterall, you’re worth it!

Wildflower Hikes Kathy Gerdl

Arizona has many wildflowers that bloom from February through May. Winter rain (or lack of it) and temperature greatly affect the abundance of flowers. Many people are surprised that we normally get a short period of freezing temperatures on winter nights, the freeze and good rains encourage more flowers.

Most common flowers are: Yellow: Brittlebush, Desert Marigold, Arizona Yellow Bells, Desert Sunflower and Globe Mallow (also blooms orange) Purple/Blue: Coulters Lupine, Desert Chia, Bluedicks, Desert Chicory and Popcorn Flowers Orange/Reds: Arizona Poppy (Mexican Gold Poppy), Chuparosa, Firecracker Penstemon, Hedgehog cactus.

White: Saguaro Cactus Flowers (usually the last to bloom), Desert Hideseed, Desert Rock Pea The best display nearby, in my opinion, is at Usery Mountain Regional Park in North Mesa. Check out the maricopacountyparks.net site for possible ranger led walks.

There are several easy hikes in this park with plenty of flowers.

The west side of Pass Mountain Trail is my favorite. Several benches along the trail provide a rest while you enjoy the view.

60 Hikes with 60 Miles, Phoenix Edition by local hiker Charles Liu lists 22 hikes that are good for wildflowers. Below are several hikes by area with mileage and difficulty (E-easy, M-moderate S-strenuous) You don’t have to hike the full length of the trail, hike as far as you are comfortable and turn around.

The book provides good trail descriptions and directions to get there.

The Trilogy Hiking club hikes many of these trails every year, join the club and hike with friends.

Idioms, Adages & Cliches

Clear as a Bell

My grandfather came to pick me up when I was in my early twenties and when I said I needed a few minutes to get ready, he said it wasn’t necessary – “you can’t make a dove out of a crow.” That could have traumatized me for life if I hadn’t figured out that he was teasing. I let it pass for the moment vowing to get even with him later. That was an idiom. (Translation – no matter how hard you try; you can’t change your looks to be different).

language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal and more common in speech than writing. For purposes of this article, idioms are the best description.

My grandmother was always saying things like “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.” She called that an adage. (Translation – you can give good advice to someone, but you cannot make them do it.)

I was going to pick out some common, everyday idioms, and list them with their translations, but I realized there were thousands of them and that I would be preaching to the choir (repeating something you already know). Then I thought I would write a few words with idioms, but realized to be that clever, it would take me until the December issue to put it together! So, I decided to establish a relationship with Copilot, my AI on the computer, and after some collaboration, we came up with the following:

Whenever things weren’t going my way, my mother always said, “every cloud has a silver lining,” think of what you learned. That was a cliché. (Translation-don’t dwell on the bad side, think of the good side.)

Then, when I entered the work force, I had to learn a whole new kind of abbreviated English language. “The ball is in your court,” “go the extra mile,” “crunch time,” “burn the midnight oil,” and “she threw him under the bus”.

Impossible to avoid, and to stay relevant, I picked up many idioms that I never learned in English class or any college courses. It’s funny that people remember idioms almost easier than the actual event it is related to. To this day I still use the ‘dove out of a crow’ idiom and I always think of my grandfather.

They can be helpful memory joggers when doing related activities or tasks. They are a fact of life (did I just use an idiom?) and used every day.

An idiom is defined as a phrase where the collective meaning differs from the literal meaning of the individual words. Used to add color and depth to language; often figurative but not necessarily overused. Most of today would say they use idioms today although it could be a cliché, an adage, slang, or a proverb.

There are differences. A cliché is an expression that has been used so often it’s become predictable, unoriginal, and boring.

An adage is a short, traditional saying stating a general truth or piece of advice. A proverb (also referred to as an adage) is a simple, traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on common sense or experience. Slang is a type of

Idioms have been around for centuries as people used figurative language to describe common experiences in memorable ways. Today idioms continue to evolve reflecting modern culture and adding color, personality, and depth.

Our meeting began with high hopes and low expectations, which should’ve been our first warning sign. The boss promised a “quick sync,” but that plan went out the window the moment Bob decided to steal the spotlight. He talked in circles, missing the forest for the trees, while the rest of us twiddled our thumbs and reconsidered our life choices.

Janet tried to kill two birds with one stone by fixing the problem and impressing the boss, but instead she shot herself in the foot. Dave, clearly a few sandwiches short of a picnic, promptly let the cat out of the bag-then tried to sweep it under the rug. Too late. The truth was written on the wall.

Soon everyone was pointing fingers, passing the buck, and beating a dead horse. Just when morale hit rock bottom, the intern finally spoke up, solved the problem in thirty seconds, and saved the day.

We all nodded like we’d understood it from the get-go. Moral of the story: when chaos reigns, it’s usually because too many chiefs show up, it’s usually the quiet one who isn’t barking up the wrong tree.

Eek! My daily life is all idioms! My wish for you is that you get over it, let your hair down and life is just a bowl of cherries!

Bob’s your uncle! (Translation - Let go of the past, relax, have fun and that your life is pleasant and uncomplicated. It’s easy.)

Most Financial Scams Follow the Same Basic Pattern Brian Watson, ROSE

There are a multitude of financial scams that target older Americans. You are probably familiar with some, if not all of them: phone scams, tech support scams, lottery/sweepstakes scams, and internet/email scams. Most of them follow the same basic pattern. A potential victim is contacted, they are given a compelling reason to act, and then they are told to pay money.

Here is a breakdown of the pattern: • Contact is made by phone, email, text message, social media, etc. In nearly every case, the contact is unexpected and a surprise to the victim.

• The compelling reason to act can include fear, greed, need, or isolation. The criminals need to find a reason to get you to make a poor decision, respond quickly, and fall prey to their scheme.

• Every scam ends with a demand requesting money. The methods of payment might include gift cards, cryptocurrency, Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, or a wire transfer.

In nearly every scheme, there is an urgency factor. The criminals play on your emotions, want you to panic, and not allow you to talk to anyone else. These criminals are professionals whose job is to take your money. Some scammers will tell you to put your phone on “do not disturb” or tell you a judge has put a gag order in place.

If something is legitimate, you never have to make a rushed decision. Time is your ally. If something doesn’t sound right, stop 38 MARCH 2026

what you are doing and reach out to a family member or friend.

If someone is claiming to be from one of the financial institutions you use, hang up and drive down to your local branch, call the verified number for your financial institution, or call your personal financial advisor.

The good news is companies are joining the fight to stop scams.

You might have seen signs at Walmart, Target, and Home Depot warning customers that gift cards cannot be used to pay fines or taxes. Bank and credit union employees are trained to spot the tell-tale signs of someone being scammed. They will ask some very pointed questions to assure that you are not being swindled.

And with the increased use of cryptocurrency ATMs, a new law was passed in Arizona that requires warning signs must be displayed on the screen and customers will have to acknowledge the warnings before proceeding with any transactions.

In the future, I guarantee there will be new scams and they will likely follow the same basic pattern. The scammers will attempt to contact every one of us at some time or another. If you are slow to react, keep your wits, and reach out to a trusted friend or family member, verify before your trust, you can prevent being a victim.

Can You Print This?

The most popular hobbies include cooking/baking, reading, gaming, outdoor activities (hiking, gardening), arts & crafts, fitness (yoga, sports), and listening to and playing music. But there is one Trilogy resident who has an unusual, useful, and interesting hobby: 3D printing.

Lon Goluba shares his life with his wife Lil. He and Lil are snowbirds who travel from Trilogy back to Illinois. Lonnie has four 3D printers. 3D printers are machines that build physical objects layer-by-layer from digital designs. There are hundreds of companies that make these printers. He has one printer, made by Bambu, here in Trilogy and three at his home in Illinois.

All of his printers were used before he bought them. According to FormLabs.com, a 3D printer can cost from $200 to $500,000!

These printers are controlled by computer programs. Lon uses his laptop to wirelessly send these instructions to his printer.

These programs tell Lon how much filament he will use and other useful information about what it will take to create each item.

The filament that Lonnie uses comes on spools and each is a different color which will be the color of the item made. If Lon makes a multi-colored item he has to change the filament to the proper color. He told me that there are new machines that have multiple spools that will change the filament used automatically.

fermented corn starch. These machines, like most printers, are quite noisy, so Lon keeps his in his garage.

It costs Lon about $3 to make items that others sell at flea markets for $25. Lon got interested in 3D printers by talking to those who sell items at the flea markets.

He enjoys making items for himself, family, and Trilogy clubs, as well as for schools in Illinois. He still enjoys it as much as when he first began doing it several years ago. Depending on the items made, it takes hours to make one item. A small vase may take 4 ½ hours, a slightly larger jet plane takes seven hours.

Town of Gilbert Spring Citizen’s Police Academy starting April 8 The Town of Gilbert is hosting its next Citizen’s Policy Academy for thirteen weeks, each Wednesday beginning April 8 through July 1 from 6 pm-8 pm, hosted at the downtown Gilbert facility and the Gilbert police academy on Power/north of Pecos. Applications will be available at the end of February, and space is limited. The academy is open to Gilbert residents who are looking for an opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the Gilbert Police Department. Class topics include K-9 unit, Tactical Operations Unit (SWAT team), Patrol operations, criminal investigations, drug enforcement, gang enforcement, traffic laws, DUI laws, firearms safety and orientation, dispatch and tactical driving. TPR Foundation Happenings Don Vangsnes, Director

It’s been a busy couple of months for the Foundation and that pace will continue as we are in the final stages of planning for our last wine tasting event on March 30th and our biggest event of the year, the 8th annual TPR Foundation Golf Fundraiser here at the Power Ranch Golf Club. We also welcomed two new Directors to the Board, Fran Banks and Ken Stanczyk.

Update on Foundation Events and Activities Wine Tasting Fundraisers While the final figures aren’t in, the January 26th event raised more than $2500 for our work to help seniors in the SE Valley.

Chef Anton and Slate’s staff did a marvelous job with their fourcourse dinner paired with the wines. A 50/50 drawing was won

by Sherry Erger, a wine country basket by Mark Danestrom, and the following people were lucky enough to find a gift card taped to the bottom of their chair – Blake Johnson, Sandy Kobasic, Joyce Johnson and Shelley Nelson.

$130 per golfer with a capacity of 100 players. Registration is open now online on the TPR Foundation’s website (www. tprfoundation.org). Sign up as a foursome or single – we’ll take care of putting you in a group. The event will be a fourperson scramble with prizes for longest drive, closest to pin and low gross team (men/women/mixed). There will be lots of other chances to win something with raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Interested in being a sponsor? Various sponsorships are available for individual holes, putting green/driving range/ beverage cart, meals and overall tournament sponsor.

The funds raised this year will go to the Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Research Center. Dementia touches many individuals, but the families and friends of a dementia patient are also affected by the disease. Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Research Center studies not only the disease, but its effect on the community surrounding that patient – family, friends, care providers, care givers and response personnel who are often called on to assist with patients.

R.O.S.E. Seminar March 26th The Resources/Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly (R.O.S.E.) group will present an educational seminar about fraud awareness and prevention on Thursday, March 26th. It will be held in the Trilogy at Power Ranch Café from 2:00-4:00 PM. They focus on educating seniors and their families about financial and cybercrimes. The TPR Foundation has supported R.O.S.E. with multiple donations and encourages you to invite family members to attend this timely event with you. Coming Soon The Foundation is finalizing details for a new program we’re calling the Small Grants Program. Its purpose is to support Trilogy Clubs with small grants to ensure that no one is left out of participating in a club and/or its activities due to financial restrictions. Only Clubs officially recognized by the Community Association (CA) are eligible. Check out our website (www. tprfoundation.org) for more information.

Because of your support, we were able to present a $10,000 check to AZCEND for their home meals delivery program.

Their Director of Philanthropy, Shelley Nelson attended the event and accepted the check. The TPR Foundation has made multiple donations to AZCEND during the past six months as food security remains a major concern, especially for seniors on fixed incomes.
