CA NEWS Trilogy Moving Forward Trilogy at Power Ranch recognized as Water Wise Gilbert You may have been driving around the community recently and seen the new Water Wise Gilbert signs that have been erected at our entry areas. Water Wise Gilbert promotes efficient landscape water use among large landscape water customers by providing a sitespecific landscape water budget based on size and types of landscaping through a third-party provider, Waterfluence. This interactive platform helps bridge the gap between our community, our landscape contractor and the Gilbert Water Conservation Team. Participants who are within 120% of their annual landscape water budget are recognized as Water Wise Gilbert.

Every January, the previous year’s water use is compared to the water budget. It is nearly impossible to meet these budgets at exactly 100%. The water budgets are based on research but there are many variables. Landscapes that are within 20% of the water budgets are performing good water management and any within 10% are considered to be exceptional water management.

Trilogy at Power Ranch was recognized at the City Council meeting with the Water Wise Gilbert certification. Mayor Scott Anderson also recently attended our board meeting and presented the Board with the certificate and thanked them for our contributions to water conservation.

On the path towards water savings We are in the beginning of our water conservation efforts.

The Board of Directors just approved replacing all our irrigation controllers with smart controllers this year at a cost of $303,410. The cost includes concrete slabs, pedestals, and weather resistant cabinets to protect the smart controllers from the elements, as well as one year of cell service for all the controllers. Smart irrigation controllers reduce water use and costs while improving plant health and convenience compared to our current irrigation controllers that were installed when the community originally was developed.

Smart controllers use weather, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration data to only water when needed, often cutting outdoor use by about 15% compared with fixed schedules. Currently, our landscaping contractor manually adjusts the controllers. With automation and convenience, the smart controllers will automatically adjust for daily weather, seasons, site conditions, and we will be able to monitor the setting remotely. The systems will detect leaks and irrigation issues and turn off the system automatically to reduce additional waste. We anticipate lowered water bills by using less water as they avoid overwatering, less runoff and waste.

We also look for better plant and lawn health by applying the right amount of water at the right time. Focusing on the root zone, plants develop deeper roots and become more resilient, leading to healthier landscapes.

CA was approved for its first $30,000 rebate for Turf Reduction We applied for a turf reduction rebate through the Town of Gilbert and have been notified we have been approved for our first $30,000 rebate for the turf conversion project. It requires that we remove a minimum of 10,000 square feet of turf and plant a more sustainable desert landscaping by utilizing drought tolerant plantings, boulders, and granite. The first area targeted is the turf area outside the Recker gate.

(See picture on this page). We are looking to do two phases of turf removal for a total of 28,080 square feet. The second phase will begin after July 1, after we apply for and hopefully are granted approval for the second turf reduction rebate for an additional $30,000. This project allowed us to reduce our water use, with minimal visual impact on residents, zero impact on the reserve fund, at minimal cost to the CA. We will continue to work towards reduced water use, as water costs are not decreasing.

Survey on Food service and Gate Access Next Steps The community has participated in the most recent survey, and we received a total of more than 1,000 participating in the survey. The survey is critical for residents providing input for decisions related to access and additional food service offerings. The Planning committee is reviewing the survey results and anticipates providing recommendations as well as report the findings to the Board of Directors at the June 24 Board Meeting. The Board of Directors will then review the information provided by the Planning Committee and make a decision on how to move forward with the survey results.

Access Control Team There will be an Access Control Team learning about potential upgrades to our access system, which includes gate access, vendor access and how residents access the clubhouse. If you are interested in serving on the Access Control Team and have expertise in this area, please contact Ryan Knobloch at ryan@tprcoa.com. Access control is budgeted to be updated and/or replaced in 2027.

50/50 Raffles

Under Arizona law, all gambling is generally prohibited unless it falls within a statutory exclusion. A.R.S. § 13-3301 defines “gambling” as: means an act of risking or giving something of value for the opportunity to obtain a benefit from a game or contest of chance or skill or a future contingent event…” A 50/50 raffle meets the definition of gambling, and therefore before an Association-sponsored club can sponsor a 50/50 raffle, a statutory exclusion or exception must exist.

The exceptions include only tax-exempt organizations that have been in operation a minimum of one year such as charities, nonprofits (501c3 non-profit organizations), and specific booster or political clubs are permitted to run them.

Profits must go to the organization; no individual member or staff member can profit financially from the raffle.

There are other qualifying non-profit organizations, but community associations like the CA do not fall into any of these categories and do not qualify to run raffles under any of the exceptions listed in A.R.S. § 13-3302.

The Band of Angels and TPR Foundation are separate entities from the CA and are both 501c3 organizations and they do have the ability to run such raffles per the statute.

I have received questions as to why the Clubs cannot do 50/50 raffles, and how does a 50/50 raffle differ from buying a ticket to win a raffle basket?

There is a club rule in Article 9, under Club Activities and Fundraising. The rule does not permit clubs to conduct raffle ticket sales for 50/50 cash drawings. Only non-cash raffle ticket sales are permitted, such as selling tickets to win a tangible raffle prize or basket of items, not cash.

The Association had received a legal opinion back in 2017, and I recently requested a second opinion from other legal counsel and received the same information that the Association had received previously. In short, the Association clubs should not sell raffle tickets for a 50/50 raffle where half the money is awarded as a prize and the remaining half is retained by the Association or donated to someone else. 50/50 raffles qualify as gambling because participants pay for a chance to win a portion of the money collected.

CA NEWS How to Handle Wildlife in Trilogy… and Not the Party Animals!

Residents have been reporting sightings of wildlife throughout Trilogy. The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) has important information and tips on its website to help minimize conflict with foxes, coyotes, javelina, snakes, or injured birds as they are common in Arizona neighborhoods.

Let’s keep wildlife wild!

Do not feed or capture wildlife. Arizona state law protects wildlife to allow the animals to live in their natural habitat and keep people safe. Do not rescue wildlife yourself.

Rescuing wildlife without a permit is illegal in Arizona. If you believe an animal needs rescue, the AZGFD has lots of resources to remove and relocate nuisance wildlife for a fee.

The wildlife was here first, and we always try to co-exist, as you can see them in downtown areas, gated communities, golf courses, and other rural locations. Daytime sightings are not unusual. The best approach is to enjoy the wildlife from a distance and maybe snap a picture! If an animal gets too close for comfort, try using some of these humane hazing methods: • Make loud noises, but DO NOT turn and run away; and keep eye contact.

• Motion-activated bright lights can encourage wildlife to move on or from your yard or home.

• A radio tuned to talk stations mimics the sound of humans in the area, which helps discourage wildlife.

• Soak rags in apple cider vinegar or ammonia, place in a perforated plastic bag, and hang them in the area to discourage animals.

• Most animals dislike being startled; you can use motion activated sprinklers or spray them with water from a hose which should encourage the animal to move along.

• Shout and bang pots and pans or rattle empty soda cans with pebbles in it (coyote shaker).

• Wave your hands or objects like sticks and brooms.

• You can buy predator urine on Amazon or a feed store which signals smaller animals that the area is occupied, encouraging them to leave. (Note of caution: remember, you will smell it too….)

• Move away from the animal or where they are nesting to another area.

According to the AZGFD, “wildlife are curious, clever, and adaptable, and will take advantage of any food source. Yards with abundant fruit on the ground, pet food, unsecured garbage cans, or unattended pets such as small dogs and cats are often easy food sources for the animals.” The AZGFD also states that they do not respond to calls to relocate or remove coyotes unless they are a public safety concern. Coyotes help control 10 JUNE 2026

the rodent populations and maintain a balanced ecosystem.

They have been thriving alongside we humans for centuries.

Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center rescues Arizona native wild mammals that have lost their homes to development, or are found injured, orphaned, or abandoned. When possible, the animals in their care are rehabilitated and released, healthy and wild, back in their natural habitat. Arizona Self-Defense Laws for Wildlife Arizona law (A.R.S. § 17-301.01) permits anyone to take wildlife in self-defense or defense of another if it’s immediately necessary to protect against imminent harm—no license required.

If You Kill in Self-Defense Under Arizona Law (A.R.S. § 17-301.01), Follow These Steps: • Notification: Report to Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) within 5 days of the incident.

• No retention: Cannot keep, sell, or remove the animal/parts without AZGFD authorization—must leave on-site.

• Proportional force: Actions must be reasonable (e.g., firearm discharge allowed if a “reasonable person” believes deadly force necessary against attacking animals like mountain lions).

Residents may act in true emergencies (e.g., coyote attacking a child), but report immediately—if possible, call AZGFD (480981-9400) first for non-imminent threats to avoid liability.

Angel Contact Group volunteers provide the following types of contacts to Trilogy residents: mail a special handmade get-well card to a resident experiencing an illness, and an angel to a resident who has been seriously ill, injured, or has experienced the loss of a loved one.

A recent addition to the Angels’ services is the meal delivery program. This is a meal purchased by the Angels for a resident whose life has been suddenly affected by health or life change.

Also, bowl cozies to safely warm food in the microwave will be available with or without food delivery. If you have a Trilogy friend or neighbor who you think would benefit from a homedelivered meal or any other angel contact, please call Monika Gilbert at 949-300-3961.

Equipment – We have equipment available for residents and their guests to borrow for up to 90 days. This includes commodes, wheelchairs (both transport and traditional), walkers, seated walkers, shower chairs, knee scooters, bed rails, wheelchair ramps, canes, and crutches, ice machines, etc. Also available to borrow are room monitors, two with cameras.

ANGELS Our Spuds and Splits fundraising event is Friday, June 5 at 12 noon in the Cafe! Coming soon! On Friday August 7, New Image Fashions (a mobile clothing store) who sponsored our fabulous Spring Fashion Show in March is returning to our Trilogy Ballroom with their clothing store. From 10 am to 2 pm, you can shop and try on all the beautiful clothes. So, ladies, it’s time to go shopping! This is a fundraising event, and New Image Fashions will donate back to us a percentage of their sales! Mark your calendars and bring all your friends, as you will want to see all their newest fashions for fall. See you there!

ART Many pet owners would love a painting of their sweet furry friend. Here are some tips for achieving a great pet portrait.

The artist will work from 2-5 high-resolution photos, with at least one being a closeup of your pet’s face. Clear detail of eyes, nose, and fur texture is essential. Try photographing at your pet’s eye level with a 3/4 or straight-on pose, no direct sunlight, but enough light to show highlights and shadows (i.e., light coming from a window).

Capture your pet’s personality, head tilt, and joyful smile, if you can.

The artist will discuss background color and canvas size with you.

BOARDS & DECKS Hello Trilogy, we hope everyone is having a good summer. The Boards and Decks Club is busy each day of the week with a variety of card games and board games. There are games in the afternoons as well as in the evenings. Come find a game to enjoy with a fun and friendly club.

Sunday, June 28 is our Lucky 13 game day. We play in the Catalina Room beginning at 1:30 pm. We play ten games so you will need to bring nine quarters and a single dollar bill. You must be at least 18 years old to play.

BOCCE The summer heat is here.

Bocce Club open rolling begins at 7 am Monday through Saturday. Most of our seasonal members have left for their cooler abodes, but the intrepid year-rounders are at the bocce courts in the early mornings to play a few games. Come and join us to get your day off to a fun start.

No social activities are scheduled for this month. Neither are there any leagues or tournaments. Bocce 101 is taking a summer vacation. However, this is a great time to come to the courts and get some practice. If you don’t know how to play, we will gladly teach you.

Our election of officers brings Alan Coppin to the office of president. Judy Selesky was re-elected secretary. BRIDGE Bridge can be played anywhere, as 18 ladies from Trilogy and the state of Washington discovered. This group cruised out of Los Angeles on a Mexican Riviera expedition from April 11 through April 18. Bridge was played every morning and afternoon on sea days and in the afternoon on port days. The travel agent was able to secure a designated spot for bridge on the cruise ship. There were lots of other activities that the travelers were able to enjoy.

It was such a fun trip that another may be planned for next year.

Back on land in Trilogy, bridge is played every Tuesday and Thursday (social 12:30 – 3) and Wednesday evening (duplicate 5:45 – 9). It is played in the Catalina Room.

The Bridge Club hopes the snowbirds have made it home safely.

BUNCO Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and to play. No yearly dues or membership is required. Everyone pays $5 for each bunco night, which goes into the winning payouts that night, so you aren’t really joining the Bunco Club. Everyone is welcome at any time.

Bunco Club generally plays on the last Monday of each month.

If a holiday falls on the last Monday, bunco will be played on the prior Monday. Check-in starts at 6 pm. Bunco starts at 6:30 in the Catalina (card) Room. The game ends at 8:45 or 9 pm.

CLUBS OF TRILOGY AT POWER RANCH CERAMICS Hello Trilogy! We have welcomed many new members so far this year, and we always welcome any new members all year long. Our annual member dues are $15 per year. Come on in and join us any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 9 am-noon during our club hours.

There is always someone to show you around and help to get you started.

Our president, Julie Schmidt, is gone for the summer. Her classes will resume in September when she returns to Trilogy. Her classes are free for our members. We also have greenware and bisque pieces along with all the paint you will need, and you pay as you go. We do have both acrylic stains that don’t require the kilns and many different glaze paints that are fired in the kilns.

COMPANY OF FRIENDS The Company of Friends annual meeting was an occasion to celebrate and reflect on the events of the past year. Thanks to the success of our fundraising initiatives, we are pleased to announce donations of $5,000 to each of our three charities: Dogs for Vets, Ryan House, and House of Refuge. In addition, we have committed $3,000 toward improving the acoustics of the Café.

COOKING Hello Trilogy. Although the Cooking Club does not cook in the kitchen during the summer, we are busy going out to lunch.

EUCHRE Remember when June rolled around and we were all excited for school to end for the summer so we could get out and play? Well, come play euchre with us and have a lot of fun.

There is a terrific Fun Savors-sponsored cooking class happening June 1 in Scottsdale. If that is today, you will miss it! Stay on top of the FS calendar on the Trilogy website. If you are at your “Out-ofTrilogy Summer House,” we wish you well and hope you brought your checkbook with you.

You can still sign up for events happening in the fall, but you need to send in a check as usual. Send the check to the Trilogy office and make note on the envelope so that it’s put in the Fun Savors mailbox.

GENEALOGY The Genealogy Club held its final meeting of this season on May 21. This meeting was a Help Session where members were able to assist each other in their research.

The Genealogy Club will not meet again until September 17. The meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month from September through May. We meet from 9 am - 12 pm in the Club Room of the Clubhouse.

There will be a full slate of programs this next season, so please consider joining the Genealogy Club. We welcome beginners and visitors. There are a number of Club members who are willing and able to assist you in your research.

LADY NINERS The Lady Niners concluded their league season with the Horse Race event, won by the G.I. Janes, Carol DeSpirito and Mary Walz, (pictured). It was a close contest, but these ladies had “all the right moves.” The second-place winners, Carol Olson and Marsha Buck, now have the privilege of organizing the contest for next season.

The theme for the event has yet to be decided.

We are now into the summer season and ladies from our waitlist get to play with the current members. We are happy to welcome those who would like to join us for those early morning tee times beginning this month. Each Wednesday we play a different game or work on golf skills organized by Sheila Overturf, our Membership/Hospitality Chair.

MAH JONGG The Mah Jongg Club hosted its third Mix-It-Up Play Day on April 27. The event was attended by 70 club members, who had the opportunity to play Mah Jongg and socialize with other club members they may not have ever played with or even known.

PICKLEBALL Summer is upon us, and so are the sizzling temperatures, but that doesn’t stop the enthusiasm on the pickleball courts. Our members just play earlier in the morning or at night under the lights. The courts are less congested at this time of year, so it’s a great opportunity to give pickleball a try.

Club members and residents can enjoy open play from 6 am to 9 pm. Remember to hydrate!

Since joining the Trilogy community in 2009, Jean Perin (photo) has been a remarkable force in every facet of our Quilt Club. Her talent, generosity, and willingness to share her knowledge have touched countless members, helping them grow with confidence and skill.

Through her many board roles, Jean became known as someone you could always count on—a thoughtful leader and a natural ‘fixer’ who quietly made everything better. Her dedication and leadership helped shape the Quilt Club’s history and inspired a spirit of giving that will endure.

As Jean moves to Beaverton, Oregon, to be closer to her family, we celebrate this next chapter for her while feeling the deep loss of her presence here. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy is stitched into the fabric of our community.

The Quilt Club welcomes you to partake and interact with us all summer long on Mondays from 9-12 as we meet to work on numerous fun projects. We have an abundance of materials, space and ‘teachers.’ We hope to see you!

SCRAPBOOK The Scrapbook Club is a place where creativity, inspiration, and friendship come together. Whether you create scrapbooks, cards, or other paper crafts, we invite you to join us at our weekly gathering. Come and go at any time during the day on Wednesday starting at 9 am. Working on projects in a communal environment encourages creativity, motivates members to try new techniques, and facilitates making new friends.

The club has an extensive inventory of supplies, which includes paper trimmers, many stamp sets, dies, die cut machines including an older Cricut with many cartridges, embossing folders, inks, and punches plus a variety of card stock and pattern papers, ribbon, and assorted embellishments and stickers. These supplies are free and available for members to use every day, not just on Wednesdays.

STAINED GLASS Many snowbirds have flown the coop, that is, the studio. Even so, the studio remains busy with many new large projects for the summer. Pictures will be posted of completed projects in the Snapshot section.

We have just completed sponsoring a fourhour refresher class for members and a session on the framing of a finished piece. A fall class is currently being planned and will be announced as soon as dates are finalized.

Three members just finished a fusing class at the Mesa Art Center. Hopefully a fusing class can be offered soon.

TENNIS Tennis popularity has grown to a new high for the sixth consecutive year. The USTA reported that over 27 million people played tennis in 2025. More than half the players played 10 or more times in 2025, and just under 5 million players were first-time players. The USTA has set a goal of 35 million players by 2035.

With the snowbirds gone and temperatures rising, Trilogy tennis courts are looking for new and veteran players. Why not bring a cold drink to the tennis pavilion and mix in a little tennis while you are there?

THEATRE The Theatre Club produced a funny short play called Knock Knock in March. It was a big hit! (See photo of Jim Miller and Mary Cassutt.)

We know it is a team effort to create a stage production, and, in the process, we find that frequent laughter happens and new friends are made. The club has a place for you. You may choose a backstage role as costume design, set design, set construction, stage management, prop management, or you may choose to act on

stage. There are always many types of opportunities for everyone.

The club is planning an Open House Social in October, and all Trilogy residents are welcome. Enjoy refreshments while you chat with club members about their experiences. Look for more information coming soon.

TRAVEL Welcome to summer. The Trilogy Travel Club wishes travelers a wonderful season of trips and other adventures. The Travel Club will meet next on Thursday, September 10, at 4 pm in the Catalina (card) Room. All Trilogy residents are welcome, and there is no dues requirement to attend. Come and meet your fellow Trilogy travelers and share travel information.

Upcoming Travel Club trips include a September land tour to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls, a March 2027 land tour to Nashville and Louisville, and an April 2027 Rocky Mountaineer rail trip from Vancouver to Banff. Trilogy travelers are also invited to a Princess Mexican cruise presented by the CA in January 2027.

CHAVURAH The Chavurah is a group of residents who share, learn, celebrate, and enjoy Jewish life together. Our group meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May. Our last meeting for 2025-2026 was our Spring Brunch held on May 3. New officers were elected, with Scott Fishman taking the helm, after two enjoyable and productive years with Helene Zimmerman as president. Thank you, Helene, for the commendable job you did!

Upcoming events include The Chavurah Book Club, led by Ron Siegel and Joanne Schlossr. There are two dining out groups: Romeos and Juliets, a men’s and women’s group that meet separately and enjoy dining out monthly. Along with events that may come up over the summer, the fall will be highlighted with a Breaking of the Fast, Chanukah Party, Jewish Film Festival, and Passover.

There’s always something happening and always a way to get involved.

WINE & DINE Wine and Dine Group is a great way to meet new people. We have dinner on the third Thursday of each month. We gather in small groups at each other’s homes, typically six to eight people per home. The host home provides the entree, side dish, dinnerware, coffee and water. Guests bring one of the following: an appetizer, salad, or dessert. Each month, the host home changes, as do the guests at each home.

IOWA The Iowa Group is planning three events this year. We are planning an Iowa Group Summer Social for Iowans who are here through the summer months. More information is coming soon. Our Trilogy Owls Claudia Orleans

The word is out that owls have set up housing in Trilogy. To be specific, Great Horned Owls claimed some nests and have made Horseshoe Park their family home for several years now.

Here are some facts about Great Horned Owls. They are the largest owl in the Sonoran Desert, reaching a height of two feet, with wing spans from three to five feet. They rarely build their own nests and usually take abandoned nests of hawks, crows and squirrels.

Great Horned Owls get their name from two tufts of feathers on their head called “plumicorns,” which resemble horns. These feathers are used for communication and help to break up their silhouettes in trees.

Great Horned Owls have acute hearing and can hear sounds up to 10 miles away. They can rotate their heads 270 degrees to compensate for eyes fixed in sockets.

These owls typically breed from January to February and are monogamous. The females incubate between one to four eggs for 30-37 days. The owlets hatch with white down, their eyes closed, and are fully reliant on their parents, with the females brooding them for about a month while the males provide food.

The baby owlets open their eyes around nine days; around three weeks, they start to develop feathers; and they start taking short flights around seven weeks, becoming proficient flyers by ten weeks. The parents still feed their babies until autumn, when the owlets become independent.

In Western culture, owls are viewed largely as symbols of wisdom, with this originating from Ancient Greece, where the owl was the companion of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Their stoic, unblinking appearance reinforced the idea of a “learned” and observant individual.

The Art of Daily Life Sandra Browne

Where your Creativity Comes From Our minds are much smarter than we are, and it is up to each of us to foster the natural creativity that lies therein. We can do this through meditation, walking, journaling, and removing distractions that block the creative flow. It is during these times that we have what is called “The Aha Moment”. This is when the conscious mind only receives the result, not the long process of searching and connecting that occurred in the background. That is why some of our most creative ideas occur when we are in a relaxed state of boredom. Our minds are like two-year-old children; the more you try to force them to do something, the more they rebel.

Whether it is redecorating a room in your house, planning a birthday party, or plotting out your garden, the best ideas come when you are not trying to force them. We often gather inspiration from magazines, the Internet, friends, and past ideas nestled in our minds or stuck in a folder waiting to be found again. Sometimes they even come from our dreams.

One way to reignite your natural creativity is to take up a new hobby. YouTube, Facebook Reels, and Craftsy are just a few of the websites that have easy, free access to DIY and creative classes and demonstrations that are sure to inspire you. They include painting, drawing, photography, crafting, cooking, decorating, gardening, and writing classes, among others.

Sometimes it is just inspiring to watch people create things, even if they are creating something you have no interest in creating. I once watched a young Vietnamese woman on YouTube build a semi-subterranean home with stairs, a barbecue, and a bed all out of mud. I was fascinated.

So, the point is, you don’t need to do all the creative things you watch; just watch the creative process.

Watch the artist create something from raw materials. It’s a powerful thought to realize that you can create something that never existed before, whether it be a painting, a poem, or a mud house.

A further step into the creative world is seeing the artists’ work in person. Go to a ballet, a play, or 30 JUNE 2026

any live performance that beckons you. Also, museums and art galleries are a wonderful source of inspiration, and the Phoenix area has an abundance of them, such as the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Phoenix and the Mesa Arts Center, which displays works by both well-known figures and lesser-known artists. The Scottsdale Thursday night ArtWalk through Old Town is an evening of inspiration and fun. Galleries, restaurants, and other venues remain open for the evening events. Any and all of these events are certain to spark your imagination into action.

A Small Practice for the Month As you go through your day, think back on that little stone, your reminder to stay in the moment and, more importantly, to observe your surroundings. When you see something that you connect with, something that you really like, capture the image. It can be something you can photograph, such as a tree, a TV scene, or a picture on the Internet. It can be something you cut out of a magazine or just write down a visual description of. Try for four or five images - more if you like. Then think about what you like about each of your choices.

Movie Brings Attention to Tech Support Scams

In January 2024, I went to my local movie theater to see “The Beekeeper.” It is an action thriller starring Jason Statham that begins with someone being victimized by a tech support scam.

The victim is at home doing some work on her computer when she gets a pop-up window on her screen indicating her computer has been infected by a virus. She plays right into the hands of the scammers by calling the number on her computer screen.

As I watched the movie, I observed how these financial predators manipulate people into believing in their scheme.

The movie does an excellent job showing how the scammers have an answer for everything and pressure the victim into making a rash decision. They frighten the victim by warning that all her photos and important files will be lost if she doesn’t take immediate action.

• Seek Expert Opinion: Consult someone you trust with computer knowledge.

• Shut It Down: When in doubt, safely shutting down your computer will help until you can get your trusted tech support person to help you.

• Regular Backups: Regularly back up your data to recover it in case of a scam or technical failure.

“The Beekeeper” did very well in the box office. I hope its success brings awareness to these types of crimes. Scamming is extremely profitable, so the problem is only going to get worse before it gets better.

The bad guys convince the victim to give them remote access to her computer to fix the problem. Remote access is the same thing as letting someone sit in front of your computer and allowing them to do whatever they want to do. In minutes, the scammers drained her bank accounts, including $2 million from a children’s charity account that she oversaw.

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the movie by disclosing what happens next, but let’s just say it brings out the wrath of Jason Statham’s character. And that is not a good thing for scammers.

As a former law enforcement officer, I certainly don’t condone vigilante justice, but I can understand the reason why Jason Statham’s character goes after the scammers with a vengeance. I admit that I was rooting for him.

The tech support scam can also take the form of a phone call.

I met a person in Pima County who lost over $30,000 when scammers convinced her to give them remote access to her computer. She received a call saying she was owed a refund from a company. The scammers manipulated her into a fake refund process to gain unauthorized access to her computer.

If you encounter a suspicious pop-up, email, phone call, or text, here are some immediate steps to take: • Pause and Assess: Take a moment to breathe and think.

Time is your friend. Don’t act on impulse.

It Is Not Just About Slang Words Lin Eliason

When I started this article, it was supposed to be a follow-up to the one I wrote in the March issue of Idioms and Adages.

It was going to be about Slang and how to understand what young people were saying through acronyms and blended words defying the art of the English language.

I started thinking about the relationships that we have with our grandchildren and younger people in general and it seems like it is not so much knowing current slang words (although they help) but communicating with younger people.

I sometimes think as we get older and gain knowledge, we assume we have earned the right of passage to share our past experiences and expect them to heed our advice. I can say with complete confidence that lots of advice my parents gave went right over my head and my grandparents only gave advice to mom and dad. Grandparents were fun to visit, and they let us get away with more than my parents. But I always knew that if I had a problem I could not talk to my parents about, I could go to either of them for help. Life seemed so simple then. When I tried to tell my son the “I had to walk a mile to the bus stop in the snow when I was a kid” line, he would say, “That was then and this is now – can you just drop me off at the front doors on your way to work?”

Despite his sass, he had a point. It is much harder to be young today than it was just ten years ago. I do not remember my parents asking me how I felt about something. They told us what they thought we needed to know, and we were expected to heed their advice or be grounded until we turned eighteen. If we want our younger people to succeed and excel today, we need to be current instead of giving outdated advice that worked for us based on our past. I am glad that I learned so much from my parents, and grateful that I can try to use that to apply to present circumstances today.

You can find anything on the Internet, including how to talk to younger generations, but most importantly, initiating conversations, and there are plenty of tips. Google suggests that you start conversations at low-pressure times and ask open-ended conversations rather than yes/no inquiries.

Focus on their interests or friends and listen actively without immediately offering solutions or judgment. Keep it light, be patient, and avoid lecturing. If they are not ready to talk, give them space to avoid making them defensive. Ask for their advice. It encourages them to share or say what they think.

Listen to understand, not just to solve their problems. If they 32 JUNE 2026

are busy or having a bad day, let it be. You can always try again later. The truth is they really care about what you think, and what you say can have a significant impact if you present it to them in the right way.

As with idioms and adages, there are unlimited resources and slang words. Mo’ Urban Dictionary, compiled by Aaron Peckham, covers a wide range of ages. Just when you think you got a handle on the slang, you realize the same word used five years ago has a totally different meaning when used by young people today. There is positive slang, and there is negative slang. It changes so rapidly that now it is best to look it up by the year. And with cell phones being the prime method of socialization, it explains why there are so many acronyms and blended words.

On almost every site I went to regarding understanding slang between generations, the matter of concern was “sexting” (sex plus texting). It involves sharing sexually suggestive content. While it is used for flirting and building intimacy, in some cases it can include bullying, child pornography and exploitation. Since so much social interaction is on cell phones, it is particularly dangerous and hard to control, especially for vulnerable teens. This is the word that prompted me to change the direction of this article.

When in doubt understanding slang words, the best route is the direct one. Ask them what it means to them – ask them to help you understand the words.

It is the best time of your life to spend with younger generations and a fun time for them to enjoy learning from you. They need all the love and support they can get in this ever-changing world today. Yes, I do see a true slang word article in the future of the San Tan Press!

Celebrating Big…. Happy 95th to Addie Abbruscato Addie Abbruscato

On March 2, 2026, I reached another milestone in my life. I’ve made it to 95 years old. This moment fills me with gratitude for the experiences, memories, and lessons I have accumulated over nearly a century. Looking back, I appreciate the journey and look forward to embracing what lies ahead.

My children, Diane, Michael & Tommy, and their spouses, honored me with a huge birthday party with over 100 family and friends attending. It was like a wedding, with a cocktail hour, dinner, photo booth, and dancing to the music of Jamal. It was held in our beautiful ballroom. The beautiful decorations that graced the tables were made by my wonderful granddaughters, Abbey & Casey. There were so many other things, like the “Fountain of Youth,” the sparkles, a huge replica of my favorite singer of all time, Frank Sinatra, a picture frame and beside it little plastic hearts that guests were invited to write well wishes on and drop them into the frame, and the towering Empire State building because I am a New Yorker.

I will cherish this forever. Thank you to all my family and friends who made this a very happy and memorable day.

Ahh, the life of a resident of Trilogy in Power Ranch! We celebrate our daily lives in so many ways – work, play, attend classes, spend time with family and friends and on self-reflection, travel and rest.

The TPR Foundation was created as a charitable organization by members of the community for members of the Trilogy community to share the wealth of talent, knowledge and/or finances that reside within the walls with seniors in the SE Valley who have less.

Through seminars conducted

by ROSE (Resources/Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly) on safety for seniors against Internet theft, scamming, etc. and opportunities for a shared cup of coffee at the Living Room coffee station, or introduction to a new wine and food pairing or even a fun golf game, the TPR Foundation has worked to bring folks together to create a shared experience that is beneficial to the individuals participating. The Foundation has provided funds to Trilogy for AED machines, balance classes, and strength-training equipment for the safety of the residents in this community.

Our community has a memorial Tree of Life to remember those dear to us who have passed from this life. Our community is dotted with memorial benches for those who’ve left wonderful memories in the minds of friends and family.

Times change, people change, and the TPR Foundation finds itself needing to change as well. This organization needs to reflect the changes of the times, the people, and the community. We are looking for individuals to serve on the TPR Foundation board that are interested in volunteering experiences that feel meaningful, efficient, and aligned with all our lifestyles. We value and respect everyone’s time, talents, and resources.

We are looking for more than just hours of volunteers; we need individuals who bring specialized skills, leadership, creativity, and resources that elevate community programs, strengthen social connections, and enhance overall quality of life. We work with the CA to foster a sense of ownership and pride that sustains community success over time.

Make Text Bigger & Easier to Read If looking at your phone or tablet is straining your eyes, you can increase the text size in settings.

On an iPhone or Android device, look for Display & Brightness or Accessibility settings. Turn on the Bold Text for even better readability.

2. Use Voice Assistants for Help Devices like Siri or Google Assistant can make life easier.

Try saying: • What’s the weather like today?

• Set a reminder for my appointment.

• Call my daughter.

No typing is needed!

3. Keep Your Device Updated Updates may seem annoying, but they help protect your device and fix problems.

Turn on automatic updates so you don’t have to think about it.

Community Standards Corner R-6.7 Vehicles and Parking Residents should be aware that Trilogy streets are narrower than Gilbert public streets. Care should be taken when parking to ensure parked vehicles do not hinder the operation of emergency vehicles in their line of duty.

The Town of Gilbert requires a twenty-foot (20) clearance for all emergency vehicles. This includes construction vehicles and landscapers that come to your home to do work. Be advised: vendors and guests should not park on both sides of the street.

No vehicle of any kind shall be parked so that any portion of the vehicle (including hitches, trailers, or any other attachment) obstruct the sidewalk.

Boats, trailers, buses, motor homes, campers or other similar recreation vehicles may only be parked in driveways or on the street for the limited purposes of loading, unloading, and cleaning, and shall not be parked in a manner that impedes driveways or sidewalks. No person may occupy the vehicle while parked in the driveway or on the street.

New Resident Orientation at Trilogy Finding your way around a new community can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure where to go or how to get started. The New Resident Orientation is the perfect way for residents to become acquainted, meet new neighbors, meet the staff, and begin enjoying everything Trilogy has to offer.

As part of the orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet the Trilogy staff. They will share helpful information about the community, including its amenities, programs, and resources, so residents can become familiar with what is available to them. Trilogy volunteers will also lead a guided tour of the Clubhouse and Fitness Center, providing an opportunity to explore the community spaces, as well as teach residents how to purchase tickets for Trilogy events through PurplePass and how to navigate MyTPR to make the most of all the community has to offer.

Electrical cords across a sidewalk to charge a recreational vehicle is a Town of Gilbert code violation as you are impeding the continuous pedestrian use of a walkway.

We recognize you may have a need to charge your recreational vehicle and the only way you may do so is by using an electrical cord across the sidewalk.

You are permitted to temporarily use an electrical cord for charging, as long as you provide a cord cover or a mat so that the electrical cord is not a tripping hazard.
