Happy July! Hope you are all enjoying your vacations, time away at your summer home, or enjoying the AC here in Arizona. The Board of Directors recently had the Planning Committee assume the responsibility of gaining resident input on additional food services being offered at the clubhouse and gate access. I wanted to share a summary of the findings, but for more information, you can watch the presentation on mytpr.

Survey Findings 2,786 invitations were sent to the emails we have on file, and we received 1, 413 responses, a response rate of 50.7%.

Additional Food Service There is strong interest in café use, and increased social gathering opportunities with emphasis on cost control, with no support for assessment increases. On-site food options available in the café was the most popular.

Access Control The access control portion of the survey revealed that 65.7% are satisfied or very satisfied, 17.3% neutral, and 17.2% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. 71.5% support tighter vendor controls. There was strong support of our current model with automated gates and staffed gatehouse.

Planning Committee Recommendations The planning committee developed recommendations for the Board for consideration on how to move forward with the findings of the survey.

The pool equipment shade structure is finally completed at the pool area!

We also recently had the Town of Gilbert Police and Crime Prevention join us for a Town Hall to discuss the E-bike/teen concerns we have been having here at TPRCA. They discussed the differences between E-bikes and electric motordriven cycle. E-bikes are pedal powered and operate at speeds less than 28/20 mph depending on the class of e-bike. Electric motorcycles do not have pedals and can reach up to speeds over 70 mph. They look alike, but they’re governed by very different laws in Arizona which come with different responsibilities.

Attendees learned how to handle any confrontations with the teens on the E-bikes that are trespassing, and to call the nonemergency policy number 480-503-6500 if you see them trespassing. if you feel you are in an unsafe situation and need immediate help, you should call 9-1-1.

The CA, Power Ranch Community Association and the police have been working together. There have been six arrests, which also included some parents, and confiscation of the e-bikes. We suggest you do not confront the e-bikers, and take photos and videos when safe to do so and send to Michele to share with the crime prevention unit to follow up. The pedestrian gates will remain locked and you will need to use the code to access the community from the outside. We will look for a better solution for access on the pedestrian gates when we consider new access control systems for our community next year.

Best of Luck I would be remiss if I also did not share that Caryn Lansford, our accountant, has retired after many years of service at the Community Association. She will be truly missed and we wish her the best of luck in retirement. The staff held a celebration party on her last board meeting she attended.

BAND OF ANGELS “Trilogy’s Helping Hands”

Did You Know?

Our Resource/Outreach Team volunteers provide help with forms for needed services such as meal delivery, transportation, home care agencies, lab and X-ray at home, and more. Call Eileen Marshall 480-621-5763.

Equipment – We have equipment available for residents and their guests to borrow for up to 90 days. This includes commodes, wheelchairs (both transport and traditional), walkers, seated walkers, shower chairs, knee scooters, bed rails, wheelchair ramps, canes and crutches, ice machines, etc. Also available to borrow are room monitors, two with cameras.

Equipment is available for loans and returns only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call or text Linda Ray (480-338-3730) for an appointment.

Haircuts for Homebound – Thank you, Anh Snell, for all the years of providing haircuts to our Trilogy residents in need.

Here are ways the Band of Angels is assisting Trilogy residents: Angel Contact Group – Angel volunteers are available to provide Daily Check-In phone call service and will also make a friendly visit to check in with the residents. This group also helps residents in our community who have been ill, injured, or have experienced the loss of a loved one. Angel Contact Group volunteers provide the following types of contacts to Trilogy residents: mail a special hand-made get-well card to a resident experiencing an illness and an angel to a resident who has been seriously ill, injured, or has experienced the loss of a loved one.

The Band of Angels is a non-profit 501c3 corporation.

A recent addition to the Angels’ services is the meal delivery program. This is a meal purchased by the Angels for a resident whose life has been suddenly affected by health or life change. ART Do you have a hidden talent or willingness to learn something new? Not everyone is born as an artist. Some people have taken extensive art classes and gotten degrees in art, but many artists just do art for fun and relaxation.

There are many art mediums. The Trilogy Art Club members use a wide variety of styles. We have acrylic and watercolor painters, some use inks, some use cloth, and some even use wood.

There are rock painters and roof tile painters.

Stop by the Art/Stained Glass Studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays to meet other artists. There are classes and demonstrations happening throughout the year. Summer may slow down in Trilogy, but a fun way to escape the heat is to spend some hours creating a masterpiece or even a fun rock to hide around the neighborhood.

BOARDS & DECKS Greetings, Trilogy, from the Boards and Decks Club.

The club is a unique club here at Trilogy. We have card games or board games scheduled throughout the week during the afternoon and evening hours. We welcome everyone to come to the Clubhouse and join us for an afternoon or evening

playing games, socializing, and making new friends.

Sunday, July 26 is the club’s sponsored Lucky 13 monthly game day. This game is a form of card bingo and is open to everyone.

The game begins at 1:30 pm in the Catalina Room. Players must be at least 18 years old to participate. We play ten games, so bring nine quarters and a single dollar bill.

Pictured is the month of May Memorial Day table during our Lucky 13 game. There were 48 participants playing that day. It was a day of exciting game play and remembering those who served this country. We look forward to seeing you at the game tables this summer.

BOCCE It may be warm in the morning, and the monsoon may be upon us, but Bocce Club players are at the courts Monday through Saturday beginning at 7 am to roll a few games of bocce. Come and join us for some early morning fun and get your day off to a good start.

If you are new to the game, members will be glad to teach you during morning open rolling. This is a great time of the year to learn the game with fewer people on the courts.

BRIDGE Another bridge cruise is being planned for April 20 through April 27, 2027, from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada. This is not a sanctioned Trilogy cruise, but if you enjoy playing bridge, you might want to investigate. You may contact Kristin Evans with Be Our Guest Travel Company.

In the meantime, bridge continues to be played throughout the summer months. Party bridge meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 - 3, while duplicate bridge meets on Wednesday evening from 5:45 to 9. Both groups play in the Catalina Room.

Duplicate bridge does require a partner. For more information contact Deb Heim (701-269-1725) for party bridge or Anne Stuckey (262-424-0969) for duplicate bridge.

We hope all the snowbirds have safely made it back to their destinations, and we look forward to seeing them in the fall.

Remember, bridge is a game that keeps the mind active.

BUNCO Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and to play. No yearly dues or membership is required. Everyone pays $5 each bunco night, which goes into the winning payouts that night, so you aren’t really joining the Bunco Club. Everyone is welcome at any time.

Bunco Club generally plays on the last Monday of each month.

If a holiday falls on the last Monday, bunco will be played on the prior Monday. Check-in starts at 6 pm. Bunco starts at 6:30 in the Catalina (card) Room. The game ends at 8:45 or 9 pm.

CLUBS OF TRILOGY AT POWER RANCH CERAMICS Hello Trilogy, and Happy Fourth of July, which, as we all know, is especially meaningful this year as we all celebrate our country’s 250th Anniversary! There will be lots of fireworks, pool parties, barbeques, cold refreshments, and spending time with family and friends. Enjoy your celebrations!

As we continue our warmer months, it is a perfect time to stop by the Ceramics Room and see what we are working on. The possibilities are endless. Our air conditioner is always set at 72 degrees. The annual member dues are $15 per year. Come on in and join us any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 9 am to noon during our club hours. There are always members there that can show you around and help you get started. We can’t wait to meet you.

EUCHRE Happy red, white, and blue to you! We hope you celebrate Independence Day all month. After getting your fill of hamburgers, hotdogs and apple pie, join us in celebrating your freedom to play euchre. The club meets in the Catalina Room on Tuesday nights. Play starts at 6:30 pm. COMPANY OF FRIENDS If you’re looking for fun, good food, and games, join the Company of Friends for their twice monthly socials in the Café. They are held from 5 to 7 pm on the first and third Wednesdays of the month through September. These gatherings are a perfect way to unwind and connect with others. COOKING Hello Trilogy. Although the Cooking Club is not cooking in the kitchen during the summer, we stay busy going out to lunch.

LADY NINERS The Niners are into our summer season and are enjoying the addition of our waitlist ladies. We are now playing in the VERY early morning hours and watching the sun rise leading to hot days. We have recently gone through the process of changing some of our Standing Rules to allow more ladies to become members and lighten up our waitlist. It seems that playing nine holes is becoming more popular and we need to adapt!

MAH JONGG The Mah Jongg Club has over 190 members who enjoy playing American, Chinese, or Filipino versions of Mah Jongg every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 3 pm in the Catalina Room. Escape the Arizona heat by joining us to play Mah Jongg and make new friends along the way.

As a reminder, if your table needs a substitute, please be sure to check out the Sub List posted on the Mytpr website under Mah Jongg tab. If you do not play at a permanent table, please do not hesitate to stop in, and we will attempt to find you a table to play at for that day.

PICKLEBALL Neither summer heat nor monsoon humidity keeps undeterred pickleball players from gathering on the courts at 6 am. An early start means we are finished before the temperature becomes unbearable.

Players have been enjoying Wild Card Wednesdays, which is mixed play with all levels and both genders starting at 6:30 am every Wednesday. The gang gathers at Slate once a month for breakfast after pickling.

Club members stay connected through monthly socials on the second Tuesday of the month, and through The Pickle, our club newsletter. The Pickle reports news as well as feature stories and photos of our members and their activities.

Not a club member? No problem! Residents are welcome to drop by the courts and see how this contagiously fun game is played. Summer court hours are 6 am - 9:30 pm.

CLUBS OF TRILOGY AT POWER RANCH QUILTERS The Quilt Club at Trilogy of Power Ranch is a wonderful reflection of the generosity and caring spirit within our community. With the continued support of residents and friends, our talented quilters create beautiful handmade quilts and sewn items that are donated to charitable organizations and sold to raise funds for additional causes in need.

We are deeply grateful for every donation that helps support our mission. Contributions of fabric, thread, patterns, batting, sewing notions, quilting tools, sewing machines, and other quilting or sewing-related supplies are always appreciated. Donated items help us create quilts and handmade goods for charitable giving and for our Marketplace at the Annual Quilt Show in March 2027.

Funds raised through these efforts continue to benefit charitable outreach both within our community and beyond.

Project Mondays are held every Monday from 9 am. to 12 pm in the Santan Room. Everyone is welcome, and we sincerely thank you for supporting the Quilt Club and its meaningful work.

SCRAPBOOK The Scrapbook Club is a place where creativity, inspiration, and friendship come together. Whether you create scrapbooks, cards, or other paper crafts, we invite you to join us at our weekly gathering. Come and go at any time during the day Wednesday starting at 9 am. Working on projects in a communal environment encourages creativity, motivates members to try new techniques, and facilitates making new friends.

The club has an extensive inventory of supplies which includes paper trimmers, many stamp sets, dies, die cut machines including an older Cricut with many cartridges, embossing folders, inks, and punches plus a variety of card stock and pattern papers, ribbon, and assorted embellishments and stickers. These supplies are free and available for members to use every day, not just on Wednesdays.

SINGERS On June 1, Singers began a new tradition--meeting monthly to catch up with each other during the summer break while we look forward to our next concert season. Over twenty of our members gathered at Slates Bistro (thank you, Slates!) and enjoyed a delicious lunch. The gathering was a warm and welcoming time to share laughter, good company and our love for music. Each get-together is filled with friendship, delicious food, and plenty of fun, making it the perfect opportunity to connect with others who love music and community.

STAINED GLASS Members of the Stained Glass Club are an active group who work in the Art Studio individually or in small groups to design and create projects of different sizes, shapes and color.

All new members must complete the introductory class, which is designed to teach essentials and techniques of working with stained glass. The class requires 24 hours over a two-week period to complete.

The fall class is scheduled for October 5 through October 16 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1-5 pm in the Art Studio. The cost is $40. The club will furnish all the equipment and glass needed to complete your project. Once you complete the class, you are eligible to join the club.

The class is limited to eight participants, so don’t hesitate to sign up, as it fills up quickly.

TENNIS In tennis, one of the easiest ways to improve your game may be as simple as re-gripping or restringing your racket. Replacing your over-grip takes only a couple of minutes and costs very little, yet it can completely change the feel of your racket and reduce the hand pressure needed for control.

Many players also ask, “Why should I restring my racket if the strings are still intact?” The answer is simple: strings begin losing tension immediately after restringing and continue to lose tension as they age. This loss of tension makes it more difficult to control your shots. Over time, strings also become more brittle, absorbing less shock and transferring more impact to your arm.

Regripping and restringing your racket regularly can improve both your comfort and enjoyment on the court.

TRAVEL The Travel Club encourages Trilogy travelers to consider a Princess Mexican cruise presented by the CA in January 2027, which looks like it might include the largest number of Trilogy travelers ever. Upcoming Travel Club trips include a September land tour to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls, a March 2027 land tour to Nashville and Louisville, and an April 2027 Rocky Mountaineer rail trip from Vancouver to Banff.

Walking Through History: Boston’s Freedom Trail and America’s 250th Anniversary Claudia Orleans

A Journey Through America’s Founding As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, there may be no better place to reflect on the nation’s remarkable journey than Boston’s Freedom Trail. Winding through the heart of one of America’s oldest cities, this two-and-a-half-mile route connects 16 historic landmarks that tell the story of courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of liberty.

Whether explored on foot or aboard one of Boston’s popular hop-on, hop-off trolley tours, the Freedom Trail offers visitors an unforgettable encounter with the people and places that shaped our nation. Walking the trail costs little more than a comfortable pair of shoes, while guided tours provide added insight into the events that ignited the American Revolution.

Great room of Old State House

More than a collection of landmarks, the Freedom Trail is a living timeline. Each stop reveals another chapter in America’s story, bringing visitors face-to-face with the people, places, and ideas that helped create a new nation.

Boston Common: Where History Begins Most journeys begin at Boston Common, America’s oldest public park. Established in 1634 as common grazing land for sheep and cattle, it has evolved into a beloved gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Today, concerts, Shakespeare performances, public celebrations, and civic demonstrations fill its green spaces.

Visible from the Common is the Massachusetts State House, crowned by its gleaming gold dome. The site once served as John Hancock’s cow pasture. Completed in 1798, the State House remains the center of Massachusetts government and a striking symbol of the state’s enduring role in American history.

Churches, Patriots, and Revolutionaries Continuing along the trail brings visitors to Park Street Church, where “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” was first sung on July 4, 1831. Nearby lies the Granary Burying Ground, the final resting place of many prominent Americans, including John Hancock,

Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, James Otis, and the five victims of the Boston Massacre.

Just beyond stands King’s Chapel and its adjoining burying ground. A short distance away, a statue of Benjamin Franklin marks the original location of the Boston Latin School, America’s first public school.

A Pause Along the Trail By this point, visitors have reached roughly the halfway mark of the Freedom Trail and may wish to pause for lunch, enjoy a café, or simply soak in the atmosphere of a city where history seems present around every corner.

Boston’s Literary and Revolutionary Heritage The Old Corner Bookstore is a treasured landmark in American literary history. Works published here include Thoreau’s Walden, Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Longfellow’s poetry, and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

The trail then leads to the Old South Meeting House, where meetings and spirited debate helped set the stage for the Boston Tea Party and the movement toward independence.

The Birthplace of Independence Next comes the Old State House, where Bostonians first heard the Declaration of Independence read aloud in July 1776. Nearby, a marker commemorates the Boston Massacre, while Faneuil Hall—known as the ‘Cradle of Liberty’—served as one of America’s earliest public meeting halls and a center for political discourse.

Commissioned in 1797, the USS Constitution remains the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. Revered as a national treasure, the ship symbolizes the young nation’s determination and resilience.

I first visited the USS Constitution as a child, and the experience remains one of my most vivid travel memories.

Celebrating America at 250 Adding to the excitement this July, Boston Harbor will welcome a magnificent parade of Tall Ships in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. Together, the Freedom Trail and the Tall Ships celebration provide an opportunity to reflect on the vision, determination, and sacrifices of those who fought to create a nation founded on liberty and self-government.

As visitors walk the same streets once traveled by patriots, merchants, soldiers, and statesmen, history comes alive.

The Freedom Trail is more than a walk through Boston—it is a walk through America’s story.

Old Ironsides and America’s Naval Legacy The final stops on the Freedom Trail include Copp’s Hill Burying Ground and the USS Constitution, affectionately known as “Old Ironsides,” along with the USS Constitution Museum.

Not Your Ordinary Trip of a Lifetime Kathy Gerdl

Let me tell you about a place where grandeur is at its grandest.

Silence and serenity live side by side with crashing waves and blowing winds. A presence is always lurking, and if you let it in, you will have a spiritual experience that will bring you to tears.

Are they tears of joy or sorrow? Yes. Let yourself absorb it as you continue. It will grow into delight and curiosity. Your sense of wellbeing will be enhanced. This place is the Grand Canyon.

John Wesley Powell, Geologist, Explorer and Soldier, made the first geographic expedition officially sponsored by the U.S. Government in 1869, it took 3 months and here are his sentiments.

“Form and color do not exhaust all the divine qualities of the Grand Canyon. It is the land of music. The river thunders in perpetual roar, swelling floods of music when the storm gods play upon the rocks and fading away in soft and low murmurs when the infinite blue of heaven is unveiled. Mountains of music swell in the rivers, hills of music bellow in the creeks, and meadows of music murmur in the rills that ripple over the rocks. Altogether it is a symphony of multitudinous melodies. All this is the music of waters. The adamant foundations of the earth have been wrought into a sublime harp, upon which the clouds of the heavens play with mighty tempests or with gentle showers.”

The canyon was born millions of years ago through repeated uplift and erosion by wind and torrents of water. It inspires and challenges those who view, hike, and run its river. I have been there many times and met many challenges on its trails. Recently I was inspired to meet a new challenge - running the Colorado River and its whitewater rapids.

16 Days on the River For 16 days and 226 miles I rafted through calm peaceful water while gazing up in wonder at the sheer cliffs on each side. I

saw many things in this wonderous place. Faces of people and animals appear and disappear along the cliffs. The sun rises, shining and sparkling down the river, then starlit skies to sleep under. Ripples and eddies appear and disappear. Where do they go? What created them?

The sound of rushing water and crashing waves bring you out of your revelry. Your raft goes down into a hole and up the side of a wave repeatedly. Water splashes hard over you and into your face and nose. Then there is calm again. Paddlers lift their paddles in a “high five” salute; rafters give a thumbs up. Everyone is shouting and smiling. You return to your revelry. Every day this repeats many times. You do not tire it but rejoice at the rapids safely conquered and the wonderous things you have seen.

Here are the words of Larry Stevens, author of The Colorado River in Grand Canyon: A River Runner’s Map and Guide to Its Natural and Human History, our bible as we run the river. Larry is Senior Ecologist with Grand Canyon Wildlands and Curator of Ecology and Conservation at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

“And at the finest geographic scale, here you are squinting in a hot sun at a harsh land, shivering from the last wave of ice water that hit you, or gazing at stately cliffs through muted, silver moonlight: a landscape that extends far beyond what anyone can directly see, a view that reaches back in time to the very roots of life. The infinite dimensions of space and time all about us, but forever beyond our ability to grasp them. Nonetheless, how can we not celebrate our extraordinary good luck at being here to marvel at this miracle?”

There’s more than one way to raft the river, but all require professional guides. Rafting is regulated by the National Park

FEATURE Service, and many precautions and procedures for preservation and health must be taken. It is no easy trip no matter how you go. There are large, motorized rafts that do it in 8 days. I saw people sitting up so high on these giant rafts. They probably felt no more than a light spray from the waves. They still had to lug gear up sand dunes, set up tents and help unload the boats; the next day, lugging that gear down the sand dune and taking down the tent. Everyone also helps with loading and unloading all gear and kitchen equipment. I swear some people had bricks in their bags. We’d form a fire line to move bags to each of the boats. Sanitation was a must. There were two hand washing stations, one at the kitchen and one after exiting the portable toilet facilities. No one wants a norovirus. There is no cell service and little satellite service in the canyon. Emergency help can be days away.

I chose a hybrid trip that included one dory, a wood boat designed for the river, rowed by our trip leader Sam, 4 large rubber rafts rowed by guides Jaime, Brian, Mark and Aliza, and one rubber boat paddled by participants and captained by Violet.

Generally, 2 people rode in the front of the dory and each of the large rafts except one that was gear only, while 6 people paddled the paddle boat. You could change boats every day.

My trip also featured hiking. Most were into side canyons that held interesting features and waterfalls. A few were difficult and only a handful of us hiked them. Guides were always there to help. I hiked the Eminence Trail to the top of the Red Wall and to the top of the Tabernacle, both difficult hikes.

Condors flew high above as we left Lees Ferry. The weather was cool to cold the first few days with a little rain. It gradually got warmer as we progressed down the river. The confluence of the crystal blue Little Colorado and the green Colorado was unique. We hiked Elves Chasm, a wonderous waterfall with a cave. Several people went under the waterfall and into the cave and popped up from behind a rock. We all had a good laugh.

We hiked and waded up part of the beautiful blue Havasupai River. Our leader gave a lift to a backpacker on the South Bass trail. You must cross the river to get to the north part. We did a silent hike in a canyon with walls that went straight up both sides.

It was one of those magical places. We had the opportunity to jump off a cliff into the cold water. I was game. At the top of the cliff, we were instructed to hold onto our life vests and after jumping in to float through the rapids and one of the boats would pick us up on the other side. I hadn’t heard about floating through the rapids and started to second guess my choice when a friend Susan took my hand and said we’ll do it together. She counted to two twice, saying “I’ve got you,” and then we finally jumped.

It was a thrill, and she did make sure I got pulled onto a boat.

On our last day I asked to paddle because I wanted that last connection to the river. It was only 5 miles and we paddled in silence. When our destination, Diamond Creek, was in sight, several in the paddle boat, including me, started to cry. Our journey is ending.

I met 19 people who will always be special to me. We were individuals from across the U.S. and Canada who became a team and a family.

Larry Stevens says that each of us experiences the Canyon differently, but our journey depends on what we bring to it. The river can be the stage for working out our personal dreams and evolution and experiencing the fear and joy of being together and meeting group challenges.

Try to discover what the Grand Canyon itself is. Step aside from social interactions and listen to what the Canyon and river have to say. In other words, find a quiet, solitary time to sit and watch, or write or draw. Such efforts greatly enhance one’s appreciation of this remarkable landscape.

Pack some innocence and a sense of adventure in with your extra hat and get on down to the river. Can’t you hear it calling?

When in the Course of Human Events…

It seems to me that a Declaration of Independence would be issued after winning a war for it. In the case of the United Colonies, it started a war.

The Second Continental Congress met in 1775. Since King George had not replied to the petition of redress of grievances that the First Continental Congress had sent, the Congress took on the responsibilities of a national government. From June 1775 to the end of July 1775, Congress established the Continental Arm, currency, and a post office for “United Colonies.”

Richard Henry Lee of Virginia read his resolution on June 7, 1776, while in session at the Pennsylvania State House. It began “Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be totally dissolved.”

The King proclaimed that American subjects were “engaged in open and avowed rebellion.” Parliament then passed the America Prohibitory Act, which made all American vessels and cargoes forfeit to the Crown. The King negotiated treaties with German States for mercenaries to fight in America.

The Continental Congress continued to cut ties to Britain. The Privateering Resolution allowed colonists to fit our armed vessels to cruise on the enemies. American ports were opened to commerce with other nations, severing economic ties. A “Resolution for the Formation of Local Governments” was passed May 10, 1776. The colonies were all beginning to support independence.

In June 1776, a committee of five was appointed to draft a statement presenting to the world the colonies’ case for independence. The committee consisted of John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Thomas Jefferson. The committee unanimously pressed Jefferson to write the draft. He consented and sent it to Franklin and Adams for corrections.

Congress convened July 1, 1776. Second, the Lee Resolution was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, and Congress began to consider the Declaration. It was late morning on the 4th when the Declaration was officially adopted.

Congress then directed the committee of five to supervise the printing of the adopted document. The shop of John Dunlap, official printer to the Congress, turned out many copies (number unknown) by the morning of July 5th. Copies were distributed by members of Congress to various assemblies, conventions, committees of Safety and Commanders of Continental troops. A copy was inserted into the “rough journal” of the Continental Congress for July 4th.

By July 9th, all 13 colonies had signed approval. On July 19, Congress ordered the Declaration be “fairly engrossed on parchment,” with a title and style of “The unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America,” and that it be signed by every member of Congress.

The document measured 29-¾ by 24-½ inches. President of the Congress, John Hancock, signed first in bold script below the text.

Each member signed according to the geographic location of the state they represented, starting with New Hampshire and finishing with Georgia. Some delegates were not present on August 2 for the signing. They signed later as space allowed. A few delegates who voted for adoption never did sign. Two non-signers were John Dickinson who still wanted reconciliation with Britain, and Robert R. Livingston, who felt the declaration was premature.

The Declaration of Independence has five distinct parts: The introduction; the preamble; the body, which can be divided into 2 sections; and a conclusion.

The introduction declares the causes that has made it necessary to leave the British Empire. The preamble sets out the recognized “self-evident” principles Englishmen already recognize and closes with “a long train of abuses and usurpations …evinces a design to reduce them [a people] under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”

The first section of the Body of the Declaration gives evidence of the “long train of abuses and usurpations.” The second section states that colonists have appealed in vain to their British brethren for redress of their grievances.

The Declaration concludes “these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved.”

The text was followed with “Signed by Order and in Behalf of the Congress, John Hancock, President. Attest, Charles Thompson, Secretary.” Only 26 copies of this printing are known to exist.

The original copy has led an active life, moved many times for safety during wars, treated for deterioration and the effects of physical aging have taken its toll. Since 1952 it has resided in the National Archives.

prompter had a challenging job for a while. Then came the costume parade, our first chance to rehearse in costume, which brought some memorable ideas for the lion tamer, the hunky delivery guy, the ghost, and others.

When I moved to Trilogy about four and a half years ago, joining the Trilogy Theatre Club was never on my mind. I was already happily busy enjoying all the opportunities our wonderful community offers. Then, last year, I attended a Theatre Club production filled with funny vignettes about speed dating, and I was hooked. I also enjoy writing, and that performance inspired me to explore comedy writing for myself.

Soon after that came the first dress rehearsal, complete with music, sound, and lights.

At that point, it really started Elaine Healion and Pattie Zielke to feel real. It was also my first time wearing a microphone connected to a power pack, which added one more new experience to the mix.

A little online research led me to the fascinating world of tenminute plays. In community theaters, they are a relatively new form, and there are even competitions across the country for playwrights who write in this style. That discovery challenged me to learn more about writing them, and about stage plays in general.

Finally, opening night arrived. Knock Knock had three performances scheduled: Friday evening, Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon. We knew the play was funny, and we hoped the audience would enjoy our performances as much as we did. By then, the nerves had mostly faded. We knew our lines, knew our blocking, and had practiced endlessly with our scene partners. I even found myself waking up in the middle of the night saying, “knock knock,” and running through my dialogue for my patient dog and my pillow.

Because I enjoyed the speed-dating production and had a friend encouraging me to get involved, I joined the club. Before long, I found myself agreeing to take part in the upcoming production of Knock Knock at the end of March. I was invited to appear in two separate scenes, but I decided that I could only honestly commit to one. At that point, even one small role felt a little intimidating, and kept wondering how I had talked myself into this adventure.

The Theatre Club is filled with talented performers, many with real acting experience. They are truly phenomenal. The producers are equally impressive, bringing experience, dedication, and hard work to every part of the process. Just as important, they are Mary Gates and Rex Schmidt always looking for ways to encourage newcomers to join the cast, crew, and behindthe-scenes team.

Taking on a role in a play that hundreds of people attend is a big step. Our cast began rehearsing for three hours at a time several times a week, months before opening night. It was a commitment, but also a joyful one. Each rehearsal gave us a chance to get to know the other actors, the crew, and fellow Theatre Club members.

We quickly moved onto the Trilogy Ballroom stage, where I had to learn not only my lines, but also the precise movement and positioning of the actors, known as blocking. Learning stage terms like upstage, downstage, and center stage was a new experience for me. Everything was carefully coordinated, and yet changes were still happening daily, right up until performance day. As we continued rehearsing the full play on stage, the camaraderie among the cast and crew grew stronger. There were plenty of good laughs when someone missed a line, and our

The play sold out all three performances and was so popular that extra seating had to be added to the ballroom. The audience responded with enthusiasm, laughing at our antics exactly as we had hoped. We all felt deeply appreciated.

For anyone who missed Knock Knock or earlier Theatre Club productions, I encourage you to see the next one. Better yet, consider joining the Theatre Club yourself. It is a friendly, welcoming group filled with interesting people.

One of the great joys of living in Trilogy is the many opportunities to try new things and meet new people. As Monty Python reminds us, I’m still kicking, and acting in my first play was a truly joyful experience, and I am excited for whatever comes next. I still think I may be a better playwright than actor. Let’s face it, I will never have a SAG card—but I guess that makes me an actor now.

IN EVERY ISSUE Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR)

The Free Spirits of Trilogy: Dreamsicle, Billy, and Tux Three free-roaming cats—Dreamsicle, Billy, and Tux (also known as Binx)—have quietly shared life around the Trilogy neighborhood. Though independent, their paths have crossed in meaningful ways. Thanks to the care of Melinda and local Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) volunteers, all three have been fixed and continue to thrive. While Dream and Tux remain outdoor cats, Billy found his way into a permanent indoor home. Together, their stories reflect resilience, trust, and connection.

Dreamsicle (“Dream”) Dream is an agile orange-and-white cat known for her intelligence and cautious nature. Once startled, she famously leapt through narrow bars in a tall gate with stunning precision—an example of her athleticism and instinct.

Though naturally skittish, Dream has grown more comfortable over time. She may linger nearby instead of running off and sometimes greets familiar humans with a soft hiss—her way of setting boundaries before warming up. During summer, she occasionally develops a mild nose irritation that clears with simple care.

Dream splits her time between a backyard catio and a wide roaming territory. She often needs a gentle call to come for meals, usually served near a sliding glass door. At night, Tux may stop by to sample leftovers while Dream observes from a distance or slips away quietly.

She has a soft spot for Billy, often approaching him with affection.

While he doesn’t always reciprocate, the connection is clear.

She occasionally ventures indoors to visit him but insists on an open escape route. Independent yet trusting, Dream embodies the balance between caution and curiosity.

Billy Billy’s story is one of transformation.

Once thought to be feral after being trapped and neutered, he later appeared injured and underweight. With the help of caring neighbors, he was brought inside and given a chance to heal.

Under steady care, Billy recovered physically and emotionally. Initially kept in a quiet room, he gradually integrated with the household’s other cats and now enjoys full indoor life. Once a frail nine pounds, he has grown into a strong, playful eighteen-pound cat.

Often described as a “giant kitten,” Billy is affectionate, energetic, and endlessly curious. He plays enthusiastically—chasing toys, wrestling, and even inventing games. His behavior is almost dog36 JULY 2026

like: he fetches toys, walks on a leash, responds to commands, and even shows off impressive athletic feats like reaching high cabinets or scaling barriers.

Socially, Billy can be a bit overwhelming, sometimes turning play into chaos. Still, his charm and lively spirit make him a beloved member of the household.

Tux (“Binx”) Tux is a large tuxedo cat with striking markings and a reserved demeanor. Though he may appear intimidating, he is gentle, intelligent, and deeply loyal once trust is earned.

A longtime neighborhood presence, Tux has faced hardship, including the loss of his brother and a serious leg injury that required intervention from TNR volunteers.

Despite this, he continues to roam and thrive.

Building trust with Tux required patience—quiet presence, soft words, and time. Eventually, he formed a strong bond with his caregivers, greeting them regularly and coming when called. He often waits nearby when they return home, ready for attention and companionship.

Tux is calm and non-aggressive with familiar cats, including Dream and Billy, though he will defend his territory if necessary.

He enjoys routine interactions—being fed, brushed, and gently cared for—and has become a steady, reassuring presence in the neighborhood.

Today, the three cats coexist in quiet harmony. Dream often stays near the home and catio, frequently seeking out Billy. Tux continues his independent rounds but crosses paths peacefully with the others.

In one touching scene, when Billy is placed outside safely in a carrier, Dream will sit beside him, offering quiet companionship—a small but meaningful connection between two very different lives.

Seeing these cats is a special experience. Dream may disappear in an instant, Tux may watch from afar, and Billy may be indoors plotting his next playful move.

Free-roaming cats form bonds on their own terms. With patience and respect, they may slowly welcome you into their world. In doing so, they reveal not just survival, but trust, resilience, and the quiet beauty of connection.
