Happy August! Hope this finds you all well and enjoying your summer trips, time with family, summer homes, or whatever you are doing to stay out of the Arizona heat. August has a way of asking us to slow down. The sun sits high, the monsoon clouds gather in the afternoons, and our corner of the desert settles into that familiar hush only an Arizona summer can bring. It’s a month that invites us indoors to the clubhouse — and into each other’s company.

This is going to be an abbreviated article compared to most months, as I wanted to leave space for the article on the survey results. The results were presented at the June 24 Board meeting and the recording of the entire presentation is available on mytpr.com.

A big thank you to Pickleball Club, Company of Friends and TPR Foundation for their generous donations to help offset costs for phase 2 of the installation of acoustical panels to improve the sound in the café. The café is heavily used by clubs, residents and rentals and we anticipate the panels will help alleviate the sound issues we have experienced in utilizing the shared space. Their financial support was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

Fun Still Happening While you have been away, Tammy has been programming events/activities like all the residents are here, even had a very full cooking class with PF Chang’s with over 90 people in attendance. 180 residents enjoyed July 2nd festivities celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday. There are also 6 new fitness classes, one of which is a cardio boxing class on Tuesday/Thursdays at noon, and Jennifer has been offering recorded fitness package classes and they have been a big hit!

Shout out to both Tammy and Jennifer for keeping the energy and fun going throughout the heat of the summer.

By the time you are reading this article, I am on an adventure in Europe touring the British Isles, and will have gotten to

England, Scotland, Ireland and France. More details to follow on my fun, but immediately upon my return it is 2027 budget season! The Reserve Study team comprised of Treasurer, Lori Larson, staff members Chris Clinton, Dave Brown, and Finance members, Greg Bell, Steve Balk and I reviewed over 400 assets valued at more than $3,000 each and updated timing of repair/replacement and revised cost estimates for the 2027 Reserve Study to prepare for the upcoming budget preparation and presentation. Below is a schedule of the Budget Timeline.

See you all in the fall, but those of us “sticking” around through the hottest stretch of the year, here are some helpful tips: **Hydrate, rest, repeat.** Keep water close, plan outdoor activities for the early morning, and check in on neighbors who live alone. A quick knock and a friendly “doing okay?” goes a long way. **Mind the monsoon.** Those dramatic afternoon skies can bring dust and downpours. Secure patio items, drive carefully, and give the storm its space. **Come inside and gather.** Many of our indoor clubs, classes, and social hours are in full swing. If you’ve been meaning to try one, August is a wonderful time — the air conditioning is cold and the welcome is warm.

As we round the corner toward fall, take a moment to appreciate the community we have here together. Connection, respect, and community aren’t just words on a page — they’re the way we look out for one another on a 110-degree afternoon. That’s worth celebrating.

CA NEWS 2026 Resident Survey on Food Service & Gate Access Ryan Knobloch

We recently conducted a resident survey on food service and access control. The following is a brief synopsis of the Planning Committee’s Executive Report on the 2026 Resident Survey on Food Service and Gate Access. The survey provides an important snapshot of our community’s preferences regarding these two issues that directly affect daily life. You can read the full report on Mytpr.com under Documents then Presentations & Reports. It is listed as “May 2026 Resident Survey Food Service & Gate Access”.

The survey was distributed by email in May 2026 to 2,786 residents listed in the management system. Of those, 1,413 residents responded, producing a response rate of approximately 50%. Because the survey was sent to individual residents rather than households, the results should be interpreted as residentlevel feedback rather than a household census. Even with that qualification, the response level of residents is substantial and offers useful direction for the Board, management, and related groups working on these two issues.

The survey also collected demographic information of the responding residents, including age, gender, residency status, and length of time living in Trilogy. Analyses found that demographics explained only a modest share of the variation in responses, but several patterns were meaningful. Length of residency emerged as one of the most consistent predictors, with longer-tenured residents tending to report lower satisfaction or more reservations on some topics. Residency status also mattered, especially when comparing year-round versus seasonal residents. Gender did not appear to be a significant predictor.

Food Service Findings Food service generated broad support across the residents who responded. When asked whether they supported some form of food service at the Clubhouse, more than 80% indicated support in at least some form. The strongest preference was for a self-sustaining model that would not require an assessment increase. Specifically, 64.2% supported food service if it could be operated on a self-sustaining basis, while another 13.6% supported it if any assessment impact were minimal. Only 19.1% did not support any food service. This pattern shows that residents are not simply asking for more amenities at any cost; they are expressing interest in food service while placing clear limits on financial exposure.

Residents also expressed a clear preference for the type of food service they would value most. Among those who answered the food service preference question, 8 AUGUST 2026

60.3% preferred on-site dining. A smaller but meaningful group, 18.9%, preferred take-home options, while 12.6% favored taking food to the pool area. Convenience, prepackaged options, and vending machines received far less support. The overall message is that residents are most interested in a social, clubhouse-based dining experience rather than a limited graband-go or vending approach.

Demographic patterns were generally consistent. Support for food service was high across age groups, gender groups, residency types, and years in Trilogy. Seasonal and newer residents showed some of the strongest proportional support, while opposition was somewhat higher among the oldest and longest-tenured groups. The additional comments received on food service emphasized two recurring sentiments: residents want costs contained, and many view self-sustainability as essential. Because open-ended comments came from a smaller portion of the population, they should not be generalized too broadly, but they reinforce the quantitative results of the other questions.

Gate Access Findings Residents’ responses on gate access questions were generally positive but more mixed than food service. On the gate entry satisfaction question, 42.5% of respondents reported being satisfied and 23.0% were very satisfied, producing approximately 65.5% positive satisfaction. Another 17.2% were neutral, while 13.6% were dissatisfied and 3.6% were very dissatisfied. These results suggest that most respondents believe the current gate system is functioning reasonably well, though a notable minority has concerns or unresolved frustrations.

Vendor access was one of the clearest findings in the gate section. A strong majority of residents who responded, 71.4%, supported tighter vendor access controls, compared with 28.5% who did not. The additional comments frequently referenced tailgating, security concerns, and vendor misuse of entry points.

These themes indicate that residents are less focused on eliminating access and more focused on ensuring that access is controlled, accountable, and secure.

CA NEWS When residents were asked about gate model preferences, the current hybrid approach received the strongest support. The option combining automated gates with a staffed gatehouse received 59.0% support, and another 20.5% favored automated gates with a staffed gatehouse while closing inner gates. Fully staffed gates received 9.1%, fully automated unstaffed gates received 6.1%, and 5.3% had no preference. Taken together, nearly 80% supported some version of a hybrid model that preserves a staffed presence. There was very limited support for removing staffing entirely.

Some caution is warranted in interpreting the ranking and preference questions related to gate access. The survey noted possible confusion with certain ranking procedures and with terms such as “staffed gatehouse” versus “fully staffed gates.”

Because unclear wording can affect reliability and validity, these results should be used as directional input rather than treated as definitive instructions. Still, the broader pattern is consistent: residents prefer a system that balances convenience with security and retains some staffed oversight.

Demographic and Data Considerations The survey results are useful, but they also highlight the need for stronger resident data. The respondent pool represents about half of the residents with email addresses on file, and the survey did not capture all households or all residents. In addition, the community currently lacks a fully reliable demographic baseline for the entire TPR population. Without that baseline, it is difficult to know whether survey respondents perfectly mirror the full community. Future decisions should therefore treat the survey as meaningful input, not as a complete census.

The survey process also revealed communication gaps. Of the emails sent, 111 bounced back, 633 were received but not opened, and 650 were opened but did not take the survey. These figures suggest opportunities to improve email accuracy, strengthen outreach, and better understand why residents choose not to respond. A stronger contact database would improve future survey quality and help management communicate more effectively during both routine and time-sensitive situations.

Financial Implications The findings do not indicate an immediate need to alter the 2027 budget based solely on food service or gate access preferences. For food service, the data points toward exploring self-sustaining business models rather than creating a resident-funded amenity. Potential options could include a café, limited coffee bar, occasional pool-related service, or other concepts that can be evaluated for financial viability.

Any model should be assessed through a business plan that clearly identifies operating costs, revenue assumptions, staffing needs, risk, and the conditions required to avoid assessment increases.

The Board may wish to share the survey findings with the existing gate access team so that recommendations can be evaluated against resident priorities, operational realities, and cost implications.

Recommendations Several practical recommendations emerge from the survey.

First, TPR should conduct or maintain a periodic community census to establish a more accurate population baseline.

Second, resident databases should be merged or reconciled into one reliable master source to reduce duplication and improve communication. Third, new owner intake forms should be strengthened to capture more complete household information, working email addresses, phone numbers, and other relevant contact details. Fourth, the community should follow up on bounced, unopened, and unanswered emails to improve future participation.

For food service, the Board should consider developing multiple self-sustaining business plans before making any implementation decision. These plans should test different service levels and should avoid assumptions that residents will accept additional assessments. For gate access, the Board should use the survey as guidance for the gate access team, with special attention to vendor access, tailgating, and the balance between security and convenience.

Conclusion The 2026 survey shows that Trilogy as a community is engaged, practical, and cost-conscious. Residents broadly support exploring food service, especially on-site dining, but they strongly prefer a self-sustaining model that does not increase assessments. On gate access, residents generally report satisfaction and support the current hybrid approach while asking for stronger vendor controls and attention to tailgating and security. The survey also underscores the importance of better data systems, clearer survey design, and stronger outreach. Used carefully, these findings can help the Board make informed decisions that reflect resident priorities while protecting the community’s financial and operational stability.

Here are ways the Band of Angels is assisting Trilogy residents: Angel Contact Group – Angel volunteers are available to provide Daily Check In phone call service; and will also make a friendly visit to check in with the residents. This group also helps residents in our community who have been ill, injured, or have experienced the loss of a loved one. Angel Contact Group vol-unteers provide the following types of contacts to Trilogy residents: mail a special hand-made get-well card to a resident experiencing an illness and an angel to a resident who has been seriously ill, injured, or has experienced the loss of a loved one.

Equipment – We have equipment available for residents and their guests to borrow for up to 90 days. This in-cludes commodes, wheelchairs (both transport and traditional), walkers, seated walkers, shower chairs, knee scooters, bed rails, wheelchair ramps, canes and crutches, ice machines, etc.

Also available to borrow are room monitors, two with cameras.

ART Coffee isn’t just for drinking! The Trilogy Art Club held a ‘Painting with Coffee’ class this summer. Coffee can be mixed in different strengths, which changes the darkness levels. It is much like a watercolor but utilizes a warm monochromatic palette which creates nostalgia. It reminds us of Sepia photography that isolates earthy tones. The group had many samples to look at including a bird, owl, door, landscape, flowers, and a coffee cup.

Adding more layers of coffee really created depth and even some shine to the painting. The artists let their creation dry between layers to let the coffee darken more on each application. The room smelled great and there were many beautiful art pieces created.

BOARDS & DECKS Hello Trilogy. We hope you’ve been enjoying the summer season. The Boards & Decks Club is busy each day of the week with a variety of board and card games. There are games in the afternoons, as well as in the evenings. Come find a game to enjoy with a fun and friendly group of people.

Sunday, August 23, is our Lucky 13 game day. We play in the Catalina Room beginning at 1:30 pm. We play 10 games, so you will need to bring 9 quarters and a single dollar bill. You must be at least 18 years old to play.

BOCCE Everybody needs a little sunshine every day for their health – mental and physical. What better way to get it than to come to the bocce courts and play a few games. Currently, the start time for morning play is 7 am, Monday through Saturday. This way we are finished before the sun gets too high in the sky and the temperature becomes unbearable. Please join us for some early morning fun.

If you aren’t familiar with the game, we will gladly teach you how to play. Now is a great time to learn or get some extra practice for upcoming tournaments and leagues as the courts aren’t as busy as other times of the year.

There are no social activities scheduled for this month, and Bocce 101 is taking the summer off.

BRIDGE Another bridge cruise is being planned for April 20 through April 27, 2027, from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada. This is not a sanctioned Trilogy cruise, but if you enjoy playing bridge, you might want to investigate. You may contact Kristin Evans with Be Our Guest Travel Company.

In the meantime, bridge continues to be played throughout the summer months. Party bridge meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 – 3:00, while duplicate bridge meets on Wednesday evenings from 5:45 to 9:00. Both groups play in the Catalina Room. BUNCO Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and to play. No yearly dues or membership is required. Everyone pays $5 each bunco night, which goes into the winning payouts that night, so you aren’t really joining the Bunco Club. Everyone is welcome at any time.

Bunco Club generally plays on the last Monday of each month.

If a holiday falls on the last Monday, bunco will be played on the prior Monday. Check-in starts at 6 pm. Bunco starts at 6:30 in the Catalina (card) Room. The game ends at 8:45 or 9 pm.

Tammy and her Culinary Misfits provide the tasty meals. Events are held from 5 to 7 pm on the first and third Wednesdays of each month through September. Throughout June, members generously donated food and other items to support residents of House of Refuge.

Trilogy’s own Apricot Lane Band, led by Michael Chin, makes its debut on July 31 at Company of Friends-sponsored Rock the House Dance benefiting House of Refuge.

GENEALOGY The Genealogy Club does not meet during the summer months of June, July, and August. The next meeting of the 2026 - 2027 season will be September 17. Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month September - May, from 9 am - 12 pm in the Card Room of the Clubhouse.

LADY NINERS Under the able direction of Membership/Hospitality Chair, Sheila Overturf, the Lady Niners are continuing our quest to conquer the summer heat by playing EARLY on Wednesday mornings.

Sheila has been mixing up the games…scrambles, postable single games, fast-playing games so we get back to Slate before the heat becomes a bigger problem. We have had the pleasure of including some ladies from our ever-growing membership waitlist. This will continue through September, when we take an extended break during overseed through October. If you are on that waitlist and would like to join us, please let the Pro Shop know. They will get you in touch with Sheila.

In November, we are back to our regular league play with members returning from their summer vacations and homes.

MAH JONGG Happy summer! Beat the heat this summer by playing American, Chinese, or Filipino versions of Mah Jongg every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 3 pm in the Catalina Room. It’s a great way to make new friends and to escape the Arizona heat.

Proceeds from our annual charity event earlier this year were donated to the TPR Fitness Center and used to purchase three pieces of equipment. We are happy to give back to our community.

QUILTERS ‘How Quilting Builds Friendships’ Quilting is about so much more than fabric and thread—it’s about the friendships stitched together along the way. At the Quilt Club in Trilogy at Power Ranch, members gather every Monday to share laughter, ideas, encouragement, and creativity while working side by side. Whether we’re making beautiful quilts, baby items, table runners, placemats, or other useful handmade projects, every stitch strengthens the bonds we share. Experienced quilters gladly mentor beginners; tips and techniques are exchanged freely; and lifelong friendships naturally grow around our sewing tables. We celebrate each other’s accomplishments, support one another through life’s challenges, and enjoy the simple pleasure of creating something

SCRAPBOOK The Scrapbook Club is a place where creativity, inspiration, and friendship come together. Whether you create scrapbooks, cards, or other paper crafts, we invite you to join us at our weekly gathering. Come and go at any time during the day on Wednesdays starting at 9 am. Working on projects in a communal environment encourages creativity, motivates members to try new techniques, and facilitates making new friends.

The club has an extensive inventory of supplies, which includes paper trimmers, many stamp sets, die-cut machines, including an older Cricut with many cartridges, embossing folders, inks, and punches, plus a variety of card stock and pattern papers, ribbon, and assorted embellishments and stickers. These supplies are free and available for members to use every day, not just on Wednesdays.

Stop by our Scrapbook Room Wednesday morning after 9:15 for more information. If you’re new to card making, we’ll teach you how easy it is to make a card when you visit us.

SINGERS Trilogy Singers hosted a get-together in July and enjoyed a delicious evening meal of pulled pork, mac and cheese and coleslaw at the Trilogy Café. We enjoyed a fun sing-along of classic songs using Trilogy’s new karaoke app. What fun! We will host another get-together in August, time and place to be announced.

We’re making it through the warm summer, looking forward to cooler weather and the start of our rehearsal schedule. The holidays will be here before you know it, so we will be rehearsing many of your holiday favorites and new ones to share with you December 12. Save the date!

STAINED GLASS The Stained Glass Club will be offering an introductory class for new members on October 5-16, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 1-5 pm. Once completed, you may become a member of the Stained Glass Club. The class will teach essentials and techniques of working with stained glass. The cost is $40. The club will furnish all the equipment and glass needed to complete your project. The class is limited to eight students, so don’t hesitate to sign up, as it fills up quickly.

TENNIS This month we are spotlighting Stephen Cole. Stephen is a nine-year resident of Trilogy and a USTA tennis teaching professional. Stephen played competitively as a junior, highschool and college player, and developed and ran residential tennis programs. After almost a 40-year career in the banking industry, Stephen is back to playing more tennis, and he is one of the newest members of the Trilogy Tennis Club. Please welcome Stephen when you see him on the courts!

THEATRE The Theatre Club is alive and well this summer! We hosted a special ‘Fun Night’ event in July for residents that were in town. This included a funny play called The Uncontrollable Fear of Everything. It was about very unusual phobias, such as the fear of balloons. The audience roared with laughter! We also played interesting theatre games and enjoyed social time together.

Coming up next is our October 9 Open House evening for all of Trilogy. (Members and non-members are welcome.) We will take you behind the scenes to meet the people who make the magic happen! Details are coming out soon.

TRAVEL The Travel Club encourages Trilogy travelers to consider a Princess Western Mexico cruise presented by the CA in January 2027, which likely will include the largest number of Trilogy travelers ever.

Upcoming Travel Club trips include a September land tour to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls, a March 2027 land tour to Nashville and Louisville, and an April 2027 Rocky Mountaineer rail trip from Vancouver to Banff.

The Travel Club will next meet on Thursday, September 10, at 4 pm in the Catalina Room. All Trilogy residents are welcome, and there is no dues requirement to attend. Come and meet your fellow Trilogy travelers and share travel information.

We are a friendly, social group that gets together once a month in small groups at each other’s homes, typically six to eight people per home. Each month, the host home changes, as do the guests at each home. The host provides the entrée, and guests bring one of the following: an appetizer, salad, or dessert.

Gourmet cooking is not required, and the table setting can be as casual or fancy as the host wishes. Drinking wine is not required; guests bring their own beverages.

With so many of our members gone during the heat of our summer, the Wine and Dine Group takes a break for the months of July and August. We will resume our dinners in September.

“Life is a Bowl of Cherries” Lin Eliason

It is truly a cause for celebration on the 4th of July for the Pacific Northwest, where cherries take their place on the picnic table along with the all-American apple pies and watermelon!

Twenty years ago, my husband Mark and I decided it might be fun to buy some land and do a little farming when we retire. We had no intention of going bigger than a few acres, and then we discovered the farther east we traveled in Washington, the cheaper the land got. Between a realtor who showed us a property he would buy if it were for sale and the property owner who happened to get in a fight with his brother and sell the property to us in a weak moment, we ended up with 85 acres fourteen miles outside of Yakima. Forty of those acres were producing cherry trees. We were not the smallest and far from the biggest, but we felt sure this was meant to be! Then the reality of what we had done or what we did not know hit us. We searched to find a management company that could lease it from us until we educated ourselves on owning agricultural land. It has evolved over the years and sadly, Mark was only around for about half of that time. I began to understand his passion for it and the more I learned, the more interested I became in the complexity of getting the cherries from orchard to consumer. I talk big, but full disclosure-I continue to lease the orchards for a percentage of the crop, and I am not quitting my day job!

The United States is the third largest producer of sweet and tart cherries in the world and accounts for about 20% of the world

production. The European Union and Turkey are the largest producers. The national production and acreage for sweet cherries is in Washington state, California and Oregon.

As the trees aged out and we replanted, we went from Bings and Rainiers to “boutique” cherries such as Crystalina, Black Pearl, Salina, and some Bings and Chelans. The newer varieties are bigger, sweeter, firmer, and more consistent than ever before. AgWest says that is thanks to growers and advanced packing technology.

It is not easy to plan financially for the crop, as there are so many factors beyond our control that determine the price. For example, in 2023, there were 10.1 million cartons produced and sold; in 2024, it dropped down to 9.4 million cartons; and last year at 4.9 million cartons. This year it’s predicted to be 8.5 million cartons, indicating a strong recovery. It is hard to imagine that things like weather, chill hours, higher input costs, such as fertilizer and labor, can have a huge impact on the price of the cherries. And that is only halfway there. Getting the cherries to the consumer is no small feat, as growers have two weeks to go from harvest to consumption in the U.S. markets. A lot of cherries are still handpicked and must immediately be refrigerated to ensure freshness and taste.

All of this is probably TMI (too much information), but as a grower and a consumer, I have learned and understand why they are so expensive, and I will indulge myself in a bowl of cherries at least once after harvest and appreciate the process that allowed me to enjoy them.

“Life is a bowl of cherries” (an idiom meaning life is wonderful, full of enjoyment, and easy. It suggests one should appreciate life’s pleasures, let go of unnecessary worry and roll with the punches).

Several years back I toured all the recycling centers. There were nine at the time, and it was very informative and quite eye opening. I saw everything in action. I became the recycle queen!

Now, the rules have changed. The information comes from the Waste Wizard, which you can download onto your computer.

You can type the name of a waste item, and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.

There are inspectors that check areas for any violations. They will also check our bins for violations. If there are any, they will provide educational materials on your cart. If they inspect a truck and it has illegal items on it, the entire truck will be put aside for non-recyclable items, and our charges for trash pickup will INCREASE. If you overload your bin, they will not pick it up.

WE knew they were a no-no, but we proudly stated that we tear off the top lid, which is totally free of any grease or food, and then recycle that cardboard. We high fived each other for our intellectual prowess. She said, quite firmly, “No. If the recycle workers see a box like that, it is immediately pulled out and rejected. You are causing them more work! And these conveyor belts that pull our ‘treasures’ through move quickly, so we hope no one throws out their backs trying to rid this load of an illegal object.” That wiped the smirk right off our faces.

Did you know that carts are to be placed 4’ apart from one another? I did not. One of the San Tan Press staff said, “It says it on the can in large letters.” I had difficulty keeping up with other items during our meeting, thinking mine did NOT say that. I even voiced it aloud! I was told to go home and look, which, of course, I did. It wasn’t there! I checked the top, bottom, and sides. It wasn’t there. I was going to take pictures to prove it, but I held back.

As a Community Outreach Specialist, I have the privilege of speaking to groups all over Arizona, which often involves meeting the victims of scams. I want to share the stories of two very smart people who were targeted by scammers and eventually lost money.

Let’s start with “Cathy” from Southern Arizona. She received an email telling her that she was charged for an upgrade on her computer security software. If she didn’t want the upgrade, she needed to contact the company immediately and request a refund. Sadly, Cathy ended up calling a number provided by the scammers.

The scammers utilized something called remote access and made it appear that $20,000 was transferred from the company into Cathy’s bank account.

They demanded the money be returned immediately. The scammers called her incessantly, and Cathy soon found herself feeding cash into a cryptocurrency ATM to repay the money. She ultimately lost over $30,000 through the ordeal.

The next story I want to share involved “Sue” from Phoenix. She received a call from her bank saying a rogue employee was trying to steal her money.

Sue was convinced to withdraw cash from her account and deposit it into a cryptocurrency ATM for safekeeping.

Unfortunately, it was not her bank calling, but sophisticated scammers pretending to be from her bank. I listened to some of the voicemails left for Sue by the scammers. The tone was bossy and demanding. They were relentless in their pursuit of Sue’s money. The scammers were able to steal $200,000.

The ladies mentioned above shared their misfortunes so that hopefully no one else will suffer the same fate. They were both interviewed by local news stations to tell others what happened to them. I applaud their bravery to share their stories with thousands of strangers.

If someone claims to be from your bank, you have to be skeptical. Hang up the phone and call the customer service number on the back of your ATM or debit card.

If you ever find yourself paying someone in a manner you are not accustomed to, you are likely getting scammed. In the cases discussed earlier, both victims were depositing cash into a cryptocurrency ATM. Scammers also like to utilize prepaid gift cards, peer-to-peer payment apps, and wire transfers.

When I do public presentations, I like to talk about the television game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” You might recall contestants had several options if they were stumped by one of the questions. They could poll the audience, or they could have two of the incorrect answers removed from the possible answers.

The third option on the show was having someone available by phone. Everyone needs a friend they can call any time of the day. I want everyone reading this article to think of who they would call if they needed a lifeline to avoid getting scammed. That one call could prevent you from losing a lot of money.

Haboobs and Your Health Candy Purdy

Most of us don’t think about dust much unless it’s time to clean the house, but one kind of dust will surely get your immediate attention. Picture a massive wall of dust and debris thousands of feet tall and miles wide rolling toward you at 60 mph or more and blocking out the sun. It is called a Haboob (dust storm, for the newbies in Arizona), and they are a naturally occurring phenomenon that can happen in many states in the Southwest. Haboobs can have quite an impact on health, public safety, the economy, and the environment. The name Haboob comes from the Arabic word “haab” meaning “wind” or “blow”.

What Causes Dust Storms?

Haboobs are dust storms that start with a thunderstorm producing strong downdrafts hitting the ground at 50-80 mph and spreading out in all directions. These winds stir up loose dust and dirt and blow it along in front of the storm cell.

The frequency of dust storms more than doubled in recent years, from 20 per year in 1990s to 48 per year in 2000s.

called silicosis occurs in some industries such as mining, glass production, and metal work. This same substance can be inhaled during dust storms. It interacts with tiny air sacs causing inflammation and dysfunction. This results in persistent cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and weakness.

High levels of exposure are associated with an increase in chronic bronchitis, COPD, and lung cancer. Fortunately, most dust storms pass by in under an hour. However, some patients who have developed a severe cough and lung inflammation in the air sacs without any microbe infection may have a condition called “haboob lung syndrome”. This has been fatal for some patients after exposure to haboobs.

Localized acute fungal infections like Valley Fever have been found to increase after haboobs.

Other Dangers of Dust Storms Health Effects of Haboobs The dust found inside Haboobs can contain very fine particles of solid matter including fecal matter, industrial chemicals, minerals, pesticides, fungi, bacteria, viruses, spores, pollen, etc. Particulate material of 10 microns (PM 10) or less can be inhaled. These particles cause inflammation and irritation which damages the respiratory tract. Smaller particles of the size PM 2.5 are of real concern because they can get deep into our lungs and bloodstream and have been linked to forms of dementia, cardiovascular problems, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and asthma.

Haboobs have the potential to aggravate or even cause acute asthma, bronchitis, and COPD attacks requiring emergency visits. Quartz (SIO2 also known as free Silica) may account for as much as 60% of dust storm particles. A disease 34 AUGUST 2026

Travel visibility during a dust storm can be as low as zero but typically can drop in just a few seconds to less than 10 feet. Haboobs cause dangerous low-visibility conditions on highways like I-10. This is why The National Weather Service issues dust warnings if it anticipates that thunderstorms and high winds are moving through dust-prone areas that could reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less.

A Dust Storm Watch is issued when and where dust storms are likely to occur. You should watch the sky and stay tuned to the weather station.

A Dust Storm Warning is issued when visibility is ½ mile or less and wind speeds are 30 mph or more.

If You Are Driving, dust storms can reduce visibility to near zero in seconds. The Arizona Department of Transportation suggests “Pull Aside-Stay Alive.” As soon as you see a dust

FEATURE storm approaching, you should pull completely off the road and put your car in park. Do not wait until you can’t see well enough to pull off. Do not stop in a travel lane, shoulder, or emergency lane where you could be hit from behind.

1. Once off the road, turn off all your lights and take your foot off the brake so other cars don’t see your taillights and try to “follow” you. Leave your seatbelt on and put on your emergency brake.

2. Roll up your windows and set your car ventilation to “recirculate in-cabin air only.”

3. Put on an N95 respiratory mask if you have one in your car.

Cover your nose and mouth. If you don’t have a mask, a wet cloth is also useful for trapping dust.

If you are outdoors 1. Get indoors, if possible, and close windows and doors.

Bring your pets in, too.

2. Turn on your air conditioning and set it to recirculate indoor air.

3. If you have a HEPA air filter for PM2.5, turn it on.

4. Avoid going outside even after the dust storm passes.

Stay indoors for 1-2 hours or longer if it remains windy. If you must go outside, wear a mask and eye protection.

Dust can also damage your eyes and skin so cover both as much as possible.

5. If you can’t get indoors or in a vehicle, lie flat in a low-lying area or ditch to avoid flying debris. Pick a place away from trees and power lines. Then protect your eyes, nose, and mouth with clothing.

After A Dust Storm If you are experiencing breathing problems, sore throat, a cough, wheezing, or other respiratory symptoms, you may need to help your body clear your lungs. Ordinarily, the respiratory system cleans itself by making mucus to trap dust that enters. When you cough, the mucus and dust are either swallowed or spit out. To assist with this process, try coughing 2 or 3 times as you exhale with your mouth slightly open. Make the coughs short and sharp. Push your belly with your arms as you cough. Hopefully, the first cough will bring some mucus up through the lung airways. The second may propel it high enough to be removed. It also helps to drink water to relieve a sore throat. If you have some eye drops, they can help with eye irritation, and a shower will eliminate dust picked up if you were outside. A moist environment in the shower may also assist in breathing. If coughing persists or there is still difficulty breathing, then see your doctor. This is especially true if a person in distress has a history of asthma or other respiratory or cardiovascular problems.

Clean inside surfaces from up high to low with a moist microfiber cloth rather than a dry one. Vacuum floors with a HEPA filter vacuum. Check AirNow.gov Air Quality Index for pollution levels before deciding to begin exercising outside again.

A World-Wide Problem Eighty percent of global dust originates in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The biggest dust storms originate from the Sahara Desert in Africa and the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia.

There is a dry hot mass of air called the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) that carries 60 to 180 million tons of dust across the Atlantic Ocean to North America yearly. These plumes typically hit the Caribbean in April and May, then are blown to our Southeastern states like Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Alabama.

According to the United Nations, global dust emissions have increased between 25% and 50% over the past century due to a combination of climate change and unsustainable land use.

Arizona’s dust levels are increasing 10 times faster than global levels due to construction, drought, land clearing, an increase in storms and haboobs, and agriculture. Is there anything an individual can do to improve this situation? It may seem small, but here are a few suggestions.

Don’t idle your car engine unnecessarily. Turn it off or get an EV. Avoid burning. Wet the ground before digging. Improve your indoor air quality with air purifiers and use a damp cloth rather than aerosol sprays when dusting the house. Choose a vacuum with a HEPA filter and use exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathrooms. When driving, accelerate slowly to avoid excessive exhaust from vehicles. After all, you know those folks who speed out as soon as the light changes will still be sitting next to you at the next light, with less gas in their tank.

TPR Foundation at a Crossroads Summer is a time of reflection and planning for the TPR Foundation. Each year, our Board reviews accomplishments, assesses community needs, and sets priorities for the future.

When the Board met in April to begin this process, there was much to celebrate.

The Foundation enjoyed a highly successful season from November 2025 through March 2026. Thanks to the generosity of residents, sponsors, and supporters, we raised significant funds that enabled us to contribute more than $40,000 to organizations and agencies serving seniors throughout the Southeast Valley— including programs that directly benefit residents here in Trilogy.

At the same time, the Foundation finds itself at an important crossroads. While our mission remains strong, its future depends on attracting new volunteers and developing the next generation of leaders. During the past year, three board members retired after providing nearly 30 years of combined service. By the end of this year, two additional long-serving members will step down.

Although we were fortunate to welcome two new board members in 2026, these additions do not fully replace the experience, leadership, and institutional knowledge we are losing.

In her May Foundation update, Board President Miriam Sluder highlighted this challenge—a topic that has appeared consistently in our communications throughout the past year. In previous years, the Foundation benefited from a board of as many as 12 active members, supported by numerous resident volunteers who assisted with major fundraising events, such as the annual golf tournament. This year, however, the Foundation operated with only six board members for much of the season. While our small team remained dedicated and productive, the long-term health of the organization depends on broader participation and a stronger volunteer pipeline.

At our April meeting, the board discussed how the Foundation might move forward if we are unable to attract additional leaders.

Options included scaling back our fundraising activities and reducing our charitable contributions to the community. While board members generously donate their time and talents, the Foundation still incurs operating expenses, including website maintenance, accounting services, and the ongoing care of the Tree of Life in the Tranquility Garden.

As a result of these discussions, the board established several objectives to achieve by year-end to ensure the Foundation remains viable and operational: • Raise $10,000 through fundraising activities and community support.

• Increase board membership to at least 10 active members.

• Identify and launch two to three new fundraising initiatives.

If we are unable to meet these goals, difficult decisions regarding the Foundation’s future will be unavoidable. We welcome your ideas, suggestions, and involvement. If you have thoughts about how we can strengthen the Foundation, please contact us through our website or speak with one of our board members. We are committed to doing everything possible to remain a vibrant and valuable part of the Trilogy community for years to come.

New Resident Orientation at Trilogy

Pet ownership is a shared responsibility, and with courtesy and communication, we can help ensure our community remains enjoyable for both residents and their pets.

Finding your way around a new community can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure where to go or how to get started. The New Resident Orientation is the perfect way for residents to become acquainted, meet new neighbors, meet the staff, and begin enjoying everything Trilogy has to offer.

As part of the orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet the Trilogy staff. They will share helpful information about the community, including its amenities, programs, and resources, so residents can become familiar with what is available to them. Trilogy volunteers will also lead a guided tour of the Clubhouse and Fitness Center, providing an opportunity to explore the community spaces, as well as teach residents how to purchase tickets for Trilogy events through PurplePass and how to navigate MyTPR to make the most of all the community has to offer.

In Part I, we introduced some of the wonderful outdoor kitties that call Trilogy home. Besides adding beauty and personality to our community, many residents wonder how these “Free Spirits” get along with indoor cats. The answer is: surprisingly well!

Dream, one of our outdoor kitties, occasionally visits our home, although she clearly prefers the outdoors where she has spent her entire life. She has always been gentle with our indoor cats. She especially likes Billy, our newest rescue, though Billy can become a little too playful. When he does, Dream simply runs back outside. Our other cat, Dora, is more reserved and usually keeps her distance, which Dream happily respects.

Tux, our friendly “front yard guard cat,” is equally polite. When outside, he gets along well with Billy and inside respectfully gives Dora her space whenever she lets him know she’s had enough. He’s truly a gentleman. What makes these friendships especially interesting is that all our indoor cats once lived outdoors themselves.

Our beloved Angel, who lived to be about 18 years old, was rescued as a tiny feral kitten by my wife. One rainy evening in Pittsburgh, he climbed onto her shoulder and chose his forever family. He eventually flew home with her to Arizona and became a loving, energetic, and unforgettable companion.

Dora was also rescued as a feral kitten. Although shy around strangers, she is one of the sweetest cats we’ve ever known and still enjoys curling up beside us each evening.

These experiences remind us that community cats and indoor pets can often coexist peacefully. Through Trilogy’s TrapNeuter-Return (TNR) program, outdoor cats are humanely spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to the community they know, helping both the cats and our neighborhood thrive.

Lunch with Scott and Kathy Restaurant: Flower Child Location: Williams Field and San Tan Village Pkwy Distance from Trilogy: 6.7m Service type: Order at register and food is brought to the table of your choice Food type: Healthy Food for a Happy World / Vegan, Vegetarian and GF Hours: Daily 11am-9pm Scott’s comments: Chopped Vegetable Salad. A tasty lunch if you’re vegan, vegetarian or watching your weight, which I’m not. The salad was surprisingly filling, and the ginger miso dressing was excellent (just the right tartness). The food came out fast for the number of customers that were coming through the door. I’ve been to Flower Child many times, and I don’t think I’d get the salad again. There are too many other yummy items to choose from. Try the Mother Earth Bowl. That’s a winner! For a casual, nutritious and wonderfully prepared lunch or dinner, I’d recommend Flower Child. Get there early, as it does get busy.

Kathy’s comments: I’ve also been to Flower Child many times and recommend it. The atmosphere is very casual. The line to order can get very long, but they do offer fruit-infused water while you wait. I like the mix and match menu. Pick a protein and any two of a variety of side dishes. The GF Mac N Cheese is one of my favorites. Today I tried the Peruvian Braised Beef, which came with rice and beans. Very good!

Interesting flavor I can’t describe. This is a good restaurant for groups or couples with different tastes because there is a great variety of choices. For a person who has hearing issues, their indoor seating can be challenging. There is a nice outdoor patio, weather permitting.
