We are pleased to announce that Sara Giampaoli will serve as the next San Tan Press Editor.

Sara Giampaoli is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and retired in 2020 after a 38-year career as a court reporter in federal and state courts, where she provided real-time reporting for hearing-impaired judges. Her work required precision, focus, and a strong commitment to accessibility and justice.

She has been married to her husband, Michael, since 2019 and is the proud mother of three children, one stepdaughter, and grandmother to three grandchildren.

CA NEWS Trilogy at Power Ranch (TPR) has Started a New Year. Happy New Year.

We now have a full seven-member Board of Directors: four returning members plus one Board re-elected and 2 new members. Your new Board for 2026: President, Chuck Newcomb; Vice President, Adrian Gordon; Secretary, Lisa Gurtler; Treasurer, Lori Larson; members at large, Steve Loney, Elizabeth Ridge, Gary Shaughnessy.

Every member will participate in a board orientation and training designed to inform or refresh them about their duties and responsibilities in supporting TPR. Each month our Executive Director will conduct training with the Board regarding best practices in the industry and other training to assist the Board leading TPR. Upcoming items: • The planning committee is working on a survey for Q1-Q2.

Please participate when this survey is released.

• Provide guidance to the Governing Document Review Committee.

• Determine the need and direction for the Communications Committee.

Architectural Control Process-Seek approval before starting that project!

Architectural design guidelines matter because they protect property values, preserve the community’s visual character, and give the board and Architectural Control Committee (ACC) a clear, defensible framework for making fair decisions.

The ACC helps maintain Trilogy’s appearance and community standards by reviewing all exterior home changes. Homeowners must receive written ACC approval before beginning any project, including landscaping, fencing, paint changes, patios, pools, and other visible modifications. Completing a project without ACC approval could result in fines, legal action, or cause to remove the modification, and that can be extremely costly.

Avoid the extra costs, and the potential headaches and seek ACC approval first before making any exterior project.

Core reasons Design Guidelines are important • Protect property values. Consistent, compatible architecture and maintenance standards prevent substandard or out of character changes that can drag down neighboring home values.

• Preserve community character. Guidelines define the “look and feel” (materials, colors, rooflines, landscaping) so the neighborhood feels cohesive rather than random over time.

• Provide objective criteria. Written standards give the ACC and board specific benchmarks to apply, reducing accusations of arbitrary or preferential treatment.

• Reduce conflict and complaints. Clear rules and processes for applications, timelines, and appeals help prevent neighboring disputes over appearance and improvements.

• Balance uniformity and individuality. Thoughtful standards allow owners reasonable freedom to personalize while keeping changes within a range that fits the community vision.

ACC Process helps the Architectural Committee and the Board do their job • Clarifies authority and roles (what must be reviewed, who approves, what can staff/management handle administratively).

• Standardized decisions, so similar applications get similar outcomes regardless of who is on the committee at the time.

• Make updates manageable; guidelines can be periodically revised to reflect new materials, technologies, and design trends without amending CC&Rs.

Applications must be completed and signed by the homeowner, including full descriptions, site plans, drawings, photos, material/color samples, and manufacturer specifications when applicable.

Applications should be submitted to Joel Schopp, ACC and Compliance Administrator at the Member Services Desk (joel@ tprcoa.com). The ACC reviews complete applications within 30 days and provides written decisions.

Appeals and Variances If denied, homeowners may request reconsideration to the ACC committee and then a secondary optional appeal to the Board of Directors. Requests for variances are rarely granted and must demonstrate property-specific circumstances and/ or unique lot conditions consistent with the CCRs. The Design Guidelines are in place for all to use clear, objective criteria when reviewing applications. They also: • Tie decisions directly to written architectural guidelines, CC&Rs, and any statutory limits (e.g., solar, drought tolerant landscaping, satellite dishes).

• Evaluate similar projects using the same criteria (scale, massing, setbacks, materials, color palette, views, drainage, common area impact) to avoid selective treatment.

• The guidelines commit the ACC to a predictable review cycle (often 30–45 days total).

• Are reviewed annually to be updated to reflect trends and changes that affect the community and in accordance with changes in the state statute.

We’re developing an easy-to-follow process chart to help residents smoothly apply for and receive approval for their next home project. Our Design Guidelines aren’t meant to be a hurdle—they exist to protect the character and beauty of our community. They help preserve the very qualities that made you fall in love with Trilogy at Power Ranch when you first drove through and decided to call it home.

commodes, wheelchairs (both transport and traditional), walkers, seated walkers, shower chairs, knee scooters, bed rails, wheelchair ramps, cane and crutches, ice machines, etc. Also available to borrow are room monitors, two with cameras.

Here are ways the Band of Angels is assisting Trilogy residents: Angel Contact Group – Angel volunteers are available to provide Daily Check In phone call service; and will also make a friendly visit to check in with the residents. This group also helps residents in our community who have been ill, injured, or have experienced the loss of a loved one. Angel Contact Group volunteers provide the following types of contacts to Trilogy residents: mail a special handmade get-well card to a resident experiencing an illness and an angel to a resident who has been seriously ill, injured, or has experienced the loss of a loved one.

A recent addition to the Angels’ services is the meal delivery program. This is a meal purchased by the Angels for a resident whose life has been suddenly affected by health or life change. Also, bowl cozies to safely warm food in the microwave will be available with or without food delivery. If you have a Trilogy friend or neighbor who you think would benefit from a home-delivered meal or any other angel contact, please call Monika Gilbert at 949-300-3961.

The TNR Group will be under new leadership effective March 8. After starting the Trilogy TNR Group 13 years ago with my dearest friend Margaret Graham, who we lost to COVID in 2021, I am stepping down and turning the reins over to Melinda Goodale, Trilogy resident and bona fide cat rescue expert. Melinda has over 47 years of experience trapping, rescuing, caring for, and feeding homeless cats from California to Arizona. She and her husband Scott have opened their doors to multiple homeless Trilogy cats, providing them with food, medical care, love, and in the very saddest of cases, a peaceful transition over the ‘Rainbow Bridge’.

Minor Home Maintenance – Volunteers help you replace batteries in smoke alarms, replace filters, replace light bulbs, add salt to the water softener, and other simple tasks. As we work out the final details of this transition, we hope to have monthly updates in the San Tan Press, such as the following.

TIP OF THE MONTH - If you spot a kindle of kittens, leave them be, but keep an eye out for momma, who is their greatest chance of survival. Providing food and fresh water for momma will help her stay strong to take care of her babies until they can all be TNR’d. Be sure to let Melinda know where they are located.

ANGELS You Go Girl Meetups - You Go Girl provides six meetups each year to support women in Trilogy who would like to meet others in a smaller venue and create connections, especially for those who live alone or are experiencing a new season in their lives. ART Did you ever throw away a shirt because it got a stain? The Trilogy Art Club has a solution for you. Acrylic paint can be used on cloth. A class on painting cloth was a success. They may have not had to fix a blemished material, but they were creative in adding beautiful designs on canvas bags. To seal the paint so the item can be laundered, it is best to cover with a cloth and iron the area for a few minutes.

BRIDGE The Bridge Club is active year-round, meeting in the Catalina Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Social from 12:30 - 3, contact Deb Heim at 701-269-1725 or Wednesday evenings (Duplicate from 6 - 9, contact Anne Stuckey at 262-424-0969. Duplicate bridge does require a partner. Judy Edinger 480-622-3324 is willing to find a partner for you. Our year runs from January through December. There is a $5 charge to join the club. Registration forms may be found in the Catalina Room.

BOARDS & DECKS Hello Trilogy, we hope everyone is enjoying the spring weather.

The Boards and Decks Club had our highest attendance for Lucky 13 on Sunday, February 22. Participants occupied 18 tables for a total of 72 players. We look forward to seeing everyone at Lucky 13 scheduled for Sunday, April 26, beginning at 1:30 pm. We play in the Catalina Room. All players must be 18 years or older to play.

Bring nine quarters and a single dollar bill.

Boards and Decks members continue playing card games and board games each day of the week. Everyone is welcome to join us for a fun game. Check out the schedule on the MYTPR website.

There are games in the afternoon and as well as in the evening.

BOCCE Bocce activities are slowing down for the warmer weather. There are no leagues or tournaments scheduled until the fall, but we are rolling every morning at 8 am (changing to 7 am soon). We will have our monthly Birthday/Anniversary Bash on April 18.

The courts will become less busy over the course of the month as our seasonal players go back to their cooler homes or begin their summer travels. We wish them a safe journey, a good summer, and hope to welcome them back in the fall.

BUNCO Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and to play. No yearly dues or membership is required. Everyone pays $5 each bunco night which goes into the winning payouts that night, so you aren’t really joining the Bunco Club. Everyone is welcome at any time.

Bunco Club generally plays on the last Monday of each month.

If a holiday falls on the last Monday, bunco will be played on the prior Monday.

Check-in starts at 6 pm. Bunco starts at 6:30 in the Catalina (card) Room. The game ends at 8:45 or 9 pm.

COMPANY OF FRIENDS Desserts donated for the annual Company of Friends Dessert Auction were described as scrumptious and decadent.

Suzy Powell and her committee created a festive Valentine theme for the evening. A special thanks goes out to Cathy Lasala and Gail Heil for the amazing baskets designed for the live auction. Plus, Cathy Molampy wowed everyone with her exquisitely decorated cakes.

Keeley Dean opened the evening with a presentation about Ryan House and its support for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Beginning in April, our social gatherings will be held in the Cafe on the first and third Wednesdays of each month through September.

COOKING Hello, Trilogy. Our next Community Breakfast is Saturday, April 4. We are excited for this month’s special - Cheesy Grits. Our menu includes eggs, sausage, buttermilk pancakes, and blueberry pancakes, as well as coffee, tea, orange juice, and cran-apple juice.

Breakfast is served from 8 am to 9 am. The price is $8 cash; no tickets are required. Enjoy good food and say hello to your neighbors. Also, mark your calendars for the last breakfast of the season on Saturday, May 2.

FUN SAVORS Hello Trilogy!

April showers bring May flowers! Wouldn’t that be incredible if we had measurable rain showers this month? We always have beautiful flowers around the neighborhood and area, but a little more rain would be great.

Fun Savors is a club you want to belong to. There are always events planned for you to attend. You missed a trip to Las Vegas and another trip to Taliesin. You can still attend a Mystery trip though! Where? That’s the Mystery. You must be a Fun Savor to be able to attend. The trip is planned for May so you can still sign up for this special event when you become a Fun Savor member.

GENEALOGY The Trilogy Genealogy Club meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 9 am in the Club Room. The speaker for the April 16 meeting will be Ken Waters. Ken will share his experiences in

Genetic Genealogy using software like ancestry.com, FTDNA. org and GedMatch.com in an effort to find common ancestors.

Genetic Genealogy is an amazing new field with explosive growth.

Ken has attended a number of workshops and conferences related to Genetic Genealogy, and with his background in science, is becoming an expert in this field.

Ken has been with us before, and our members have found his presentations both interesting and informative.

The Genealogy Club welcomes new members and visitors. We have several members who will assist you with your research.

LINE DANCE Dance can boost your memory! When you are constantly learning new dance moves, you make more neuroconnections in your brain, which improves your overall cognition and memory.

Tuesday class is for intermediate dancers at 1 pm in the Ballroom.

Wednesday class is for beginners at 1 pm in the San Tan Room (dance studio accessible on golf course side of the Clubhouse).

If you are interested in giving line dancing a try, come on Wednesday at 12:40 pm to learn a few basic steps. Your first class is free. After that, you can purchase a $24 punch card before class for six lessons. Club dues are $10 per year.

LADIES TLGA Wow! Our TLGA players are making Eagles from everywhere on the course! This time it was Rose Gangel on Hole #9 when her second shot rolled right into the cup for a score of 2 on a par 4. Congratulations Rose!

LADY NINERS It is hard to believe the League season is almost over. It has been busy and lots of fun.

The ‘Carnival’ in February was outstanding. Chaired by Terri Barry and Judy Hollenbeck, (with their committee of seven), the participants played a scramble on the course and competed at games of skill in the Café. Many husbands helped with the games and the ladies dressed in carnival attire. We had Bearded Ladies; (Pictured are Nancy Visser, Donna Schwan, Lisa Stowe and Mary Walz) among the participants. When courts are full, we follow paddle-up rules: after completing one game, step off the court and place your paddle in the rack. When your paddle reaches the front of the line, you’re up for the next available court.

An advantage of membership is having access to all the club’s supplies. Supplies include paper trimmers, many stamp sets, dies, die cut machines including an older Cricut with many cartridges, embossing folders, inks, and punches plus a variety of card stock and pattern paper, ribbon, and assorted embellishments and stickers for members to use when creating a card or scrapbook page.

TENNIS Taken from The NewYork Times: Walking may be America’s go-to activity, but several studies have highlighted the benefits of tennis for longevity. One study from Denmark found that tennis players live an astounding 10 years longer than their sedentary peers-and longer than soccer players, swimmers and the other recreational

athletes included in the analysis. Other research from Britain and the United States followed people for about a decade and found that playing racket sports linked to lower risk of death during the follow-up period than any other sport or form of exercise studied.

THEATRE Albert Einstein said, “Nothing happens unless something is moved.” We agree. And we’re moving forward with a lot of fun things to come.

Our play for March is over, and we were pleased with the result.

Presenting a one-act play with a series of vignettes was easier– and fun. Plans are in the making for another theatrical production later in the year. This month our new Board members take on their responsibilities, and we wish them luck and success.

This month we get to see the Hale Theatre production of “She Loves Me.” We’ll also have our end-of-year gathering this month, so stay tuned.

When the Theatre Club has a business meeting, it is always second Saturday of the month at 9 am, in either the Ballroom or the Multi-purpose Room. Announcements will be sent out via email with details about the meeting.

We will discuss upcoming Travel Club trips, including a September land tour to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls, a March 2027 land tour to Nashville and Louisville, and an April 2027 Rocky Mountaineer rail trip from Vancouver to Banff.

DEMS & FRIENDS Throughout the winter the Dems & Friends Group has continued its commitment to informed engagement, the creation and maintenance of a strong and caring community, and support of those in need.

In February and March, members focused on learning about candidates, their platforms, and key issues, while also helping ensure that candidates obtained the signatures necessary to appear on the ballot.

April promises to be a very active month, highlighted by the large group meeting on April 19, along with several small-group gatherings and spontaneous ‘pop-up’ meetings hosted in members’ homes. In addition to welcoming candidates and representatives from various political organizations, we’ll be supporting Hearts to Warm Soles, an effort to provide socks to individuals experiencing homelessness, honoring the memory of Andrew Wilkerson, the son of two of our members.

WINE & DINE Are you curious about the Wine and Dine Group? We are a friendly, social group that gets together once a month in small groups at each other’s homes, typically six to eight people per home. Each month, the Host home changes, as do the guests at each home. The Host home provides the entree, side dish, coffee, water and dinnerware. The guests bring one of the following: an appetizer, salad or dessert.

Drinking wine is not a requirement. Guests bring their own beverage. You do not need to be a gourmet cook. We have a variety of food themes and meat choices throughout the year to appeal to all types of cooks and appetites. This month the meat option is beef.

IOWA The Iowa Group held our Annual Potluck on Sunday, February 22. Our theme for this year’s Potluck was ‘Hog Wild,’ in celebration of Iowa farmers and that Iowa is the largest producer of pork in America. There were over 85 Iowans in attendance. We would like to thank everyone for attending.

Everyone had a great time. So much great food and friendship to share. It is always great to see how many Iowa connections we have right here in Trilogy.

Goodbye to Fran

10 Years of Ink, Chaos, and Community

Time has sprinted ahead while we were busy arguing about fonts and layouts. But here we are, watching the magazine march on without her, like a teenager leaving home for college: proud, emotional, and slightly concerned that she won’t know what to do with all her newfound freedom.

years of memories to carry with her: the stories, the people, the triumphs, the typos we pretend never happened. And while some people love reading on screens, others (like certain individuals who shall remain unnamed (me)) prefer a hard copy that doesn’t require Wi-Fi, passwords, or squinting.

Fran still remembers her first day. She arrived bright-eyed, innocent, completely aware that she was about to be “volunteered” into becoming the Editor, not realizing where this journey would take her. One minute she was the new kid, the next she was knee-deep in layouts, deadlines, and meetings that multiplied like rabbits.

A magazine you can toss into your car and take anywhere.

A magazine that runs under its own power. A magazine that, like Fran, has been dependable, spirited, and just a little bit stubborn.

We wrote about everything: community events, café menus, golf cart parades (the true cultural backbone of the neighborhood).

We wrote vacation stories and resident bios, introducing new neighbors like they were celebrities. We were the voice of the community — whether the community asked for it or not.

Our staff meetings were legendary.

We debated story titles as if the fate of civilization depended on them. We sent out surveys asking readers what they wanted, secretly hoping they wouldn’t say “shorter issues.” We begged people to submit recipes, travel stories, or literally anything that would fill a page. And somehow, every month, we pulled it off. We were a welloiled machine… if the machine ran on caffeine, panic, last minute inspiration and did we get the right names with the right photos? I think we drove our proofreaders quite mad!

This place taught us to pay attention. To people. To sentences.

To the tiny decisions that eventually turn into something you can hold in your hands — unless you left it in your golf cart, under a seat somewhere, or on a lunch table in a restaurant.

Fran and I became friends long before the San Tan Press magazine existed as we know it today. It was a surprise to all of us on the staff back in 2016 that we had a new mystery Editor. She wanted to be working behind the scenes so to speak. We all soon were delighted to find out that it was Fran Molleur. Through all these years that I’ve known Fran, she has been a very organized person and Editor staying in touch with all of us every week and having meetings with the San Tan Press writers, Photographers and CA staff monthly. She loved picking our brains so to speak and getting our input at our meetings for new ideas for articles so we could continue putting together a beautiful magazine every month… Maryann Eddy The San Tan Press is a lifeline for our community. Fran Moeller has been its driving force, the heart that keeps things running, organized and moving ahead, always to the next edition. It is hard to imagine the magazine without Fran at the helm.

We all realize that everyone comes to the point when it is time to change direction, whether it be to slow down or to find a new focus. Fran has earned that pivot, but we will miss her guidance, sense of humor, generosity and approach to the publication and all it entails.

I first interacted with Fran over two years ago, when I approached her and asked if it would be possible for me to share a story of thanks to my Trilogy neighbors who helped me create a beautiful memory in our home in honor of our son, Andrew. Fran accepted my request and treated me, and this tender story with compassion and grace. That has been my every impression of Fran.

She is a consummate professional, but she leads with her heart. What more can you ask in an editor, let alone a friend? Fran accepted me as a “first time magazine writer” and allowed me to develop my column. She allowed me to be myself in my writing and present

the wonderful Trilogy residents I profiled in the light they each requested. It has been an honor to work with Fran and I wish her all the happiness her new journey can allow. With sincere gratitude and affection…Lori Wilkerson When Fran resigned early this year, I emailed her: “Words cannot express how much I’ll miss working with you these past seven years,”.

Our correspondence was primarily via email, and both of us being early birds, we had frequent email exchanges before 6 am. However, it was evident Fran was also often at work in the late afternoons and evenings based on times she sent follow-up emails.

Fran was always willing to accommodate late submissions and changes. She also commiserated with me when I sometimes complained about the need to correct the same mistakes over and over again (e.g., italicize websites and email addresses) or the occasional ‘problem child’ update writer.

Somehow, Fran always managed to get the magazine to print on time, working through health issues and computer glitches and crashes. And I was especially touched last summer when Fran delivered a handmade gift for my grandson soon to be born in Denver.

As our Executive Director Michele noted in her February article, “Talk about some big shoes to fill!”… Helene Shear In closing, we shall all miss you very much Fran, your style, your guidance and the special way you have of just being you.

You are vested in many projects in our community, life takes us in many different directions, and you handle all of them with great organizational skills. It’s been a pleasure working with you so closely on this magazine. Thank you, thank you.

My Trip to Costa Rica Claudia Orleans

It all started because I wanted a pair of Toucan bird earrings like the ones Katherine, our Costa Rican guide, wore. Our Photography Workshop planned a chocolate plantation tour the next day, but we preferred exploring more of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. So, from our five-star Botanika Hilton Hotel, we walked into the nearby small town in search of those earrings—and perhaps some souvenirs.

In Costa Rica, we were told, any place with a church and a soccer field is called a town. Ours had only three gift shops, so my quest seemed simple enough. The first store was filled with garish t-shirts—not my style. The second, “Artistic de Osa,” proved perfect. Named for the Osa Peninsula, known for its tropical fjord and surfers’ beaches, the shop offered beautifully crafted wooden bowls, carvings, and jewelry.

The shopkeeper, a big, cheerful man, led me straight to the earrings—Toucan and hummingbird pairs, only $12 each. While I admired them, the power went out (“Happens often,” the shopkeeper laughed). During the blackout, he introduced my travel companion to a local named Eric, who appeared as if from nowhere. Before long, my friend asked if I wanted to join a private wildlife and waterfall tour Eric could arrange. I agreed instantly intrigued.

We followed Eric to his small office, where we met his adorable seven-year-old daughter handing out business cards to passersby. The tour would include two Canadian women, box lunches, and a 6:00 a.m. pickup. We paid our $20 deposits, unaware of the adventure ahead.

Morning came early. The Canadians—Roxanne, a biologist in her 60s, and Shelly, a retired legal secretary nearing 80—were delightful. Cheerful and experienced travelers, they had been exploring Costa Rica on a shoestring, determined to see its creatures up close. Our guide, J.C., greeted us beside an aging four-wheel-drive mule jeep—dusty, tough, and distinctly local. Only one could ride shotgun; the rest sat three across in the back with no A/C and one jammed window. We instantly established a seat rotation system. J.C., well-spoken and fit, promised sightings of rare birds and even the elusive poison tree frog.

We soon discovered J.C. was an expert naturalist. He stopped often for wildlife—colorful birds, chattering spider monkeys, and glimpses of the rainforest’s hidden life. Using his tripodmounted telescope, he helped us photograph what the naked eye would easily miss. Around midday we reached a sparkling beach that looked like something from Tahiti—empty but for a few locals. We picnicked, watching the surf roll in. I relaxed in a hammock while waves crashed in the distance. J.C. grinned: the waterfall was next.

He parked the jeep at a rough, partly cemented trail leading uphill. My friend slung his heavy camera gear while I carried only one camera and lens. The Canadians, far better equipped, set out confidently with hiking poles. The trail quickly narrowed, rising sharply with tree roots on one side and a dizzying drop into the rainforest on the other. The path was slick, requiring balance and nerve. Roxanne, nimble as a mountain goat, guided me step by step while Shelly laughed, unfazed by the climb. My heart pounded. One slip would mean disaster.

Finally, through the canopy’s green, we saw it—the waterfall, shimmering in the sunlight. “Pura Vida,” I whispered, Costa Rica’s national motto: pure life. Mist sparkled like glass beads.

When J.C. crossed the stream using a rope, Roxanne and Shelly followed. I chose to stay put, content with the view and my footing. My friend agreed, smiling. The others climbed higher, still laughing, before returning flushed with triumph. J.C. helped us back down, carrying our gear like a pro. My sense of relief and accomplishment matched the Canadians’ joy.

Once we reached level ground again, J.C. announced one more mission—the poison tree frog. By now, though, I was dreaming of an ice-cold beer. Along the road, “Imperial Beer” signs teased us endlessly, but every roadside stand we stopped at was closed for the pre-season lull. J.C., ever determined, kept searching the shadows for frogs. I silently wished the frog good luck hiding. Finally, he turned the mule jeep toward home.

Five minutes from town, disaster struck. The jeep sputtered, groaned, and died. Roxanne suggested transmission fluid; J.C.

swore he had just topped it off. A passing local driver offered us a ride to Los Delfines Restaurant by the bay—mercifully close to our hotel. When we tried to tip him, he refused with a smile. Within minutes we were on a seaside patio with cold Imperial beers in hand, laughter bubbling over as we toasted our unplanned adventure.

J.C. rejoined us soon after, confirming Roxanne’s diagnosis: transmission trouble. He drank one quick beer, then ushered us to see a few last animals before dusk. We spotted a sloth, peered hopefully for a kinkajou (unfortunately unseen), and finally rediscovered a crocodile we had glimpsed earlier in the week—our old reptilian friend flashing those gleaming teeth.

I couldn’t resist another photo. In that moment, I felt a kinship with the creature, content in his hidden pool.

As the sun dipped low, J.C. declared the tour complete. We thanked him warmly, tipping him well for giving us a day rich in adventure, humor, and heart. It had been far better than any chocolate plantation; that much was certain.

That night, a luminous full moon rose over Osa Bay—huge and golden. Locals said it was a Taurus moon, symbolizing abundance. My friend and I dined on seafood at Marisqueria

Corcovado, an open-air restaurant bathed in moonlight. The breeze carried salt and promise. The universe, it seemed, had approved of our detour.

We wanted earrings and instead found wonder. What could be better, really?

Tips For Avoiding Pickleball Injuries If you search the internet for ways to avoid injury when playing pickleball, you’ll find far more sources than you have time to read. However, they all share some common suggestions: 1) Take lessons. When you are first learning to play, focus on proper technique and wear proper pickleball/tennis shoes.

You’ll need special foot support for this game. 2) Stretch every day, focusing on all joints, before and after you play. 3) Warm up for 5-10 minutes. Do exercises, hit back and forth, jog around the courts, or do all of these. Don’t just walk onto the court and play. 4) Hydrate with water all day – before, during, and after you play. 5) Take it slow and listen to your body. Overuse injuries are the most common. If you get tired, stop! Don’t push through pain. Use rest and ice for soreness, and see a doctor for acute pain. Take one day off a week from playing to rejuvenate. 6) Cross-train. Strength training, swimming, balance exercises, and/or core exercises help improve fitness and reduce the risk of injury when playing pickleball.

Three Habits That May Promote Heart Attacks Three different agencies have highlighted three additional habits that can increase our risk of heart attack beyond the commonly known risk factors of smoking, obesity, and highfat diets.

Vaping The American College of Cardiology has reported that vaping increases the risk of heart failure by 19%. “Studies have shown that vaping elevates your blood pressure, increases your heart rate, and can affect the function of your blood vessels,” says Dr. Robert Johnson, a cardiologist at Advocate Health Care.

Anger According to a study by the American Heart Association, anger can damage blood vessels and impair them for up to 40 minutes after an initial emotional outburst. The cause is the “fight-or-flight” stress hormones, which raise blood pressure and heart rate. Stress management classes are a great investment!

Taking the Elevator Elevators and escalators aren’t the problem-it’s the choice to use them instead of the stairs. According to the European Society of Cardiology, avoiding exercise is our downfall.

Stair climbing and descending are good for reducing stress, strengthening the legs, and lowering blood pressure.

Do You Need to Worry About Measles?

As the number of measles cases in the United States continues to rise, many of us wonder whether we are protected by the vaccines we received long ago. We understand the disease can be deadly for children who are not immunized, but what about adults? “Anyone, regardless of age, who has not been vaccinated or had the disease, is at risk of contracting the virus,” says Dr. Frank Belmonte, the chief medical officer for Advocate Children’s Hospital. Most adults born before 1957 likely had the disease. One group of adults should be cautious if they received a type of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine between 1963 and 1967. They may have received an early, inactivated (killed) vaccine that later proved ineffective at providing long-term immunity. The CDC recommends that if you are in that category or are unsure, you should receive a single dose of the modern MMR vaccine to be protected against measles. Or “adults born in the early 60s could consider being tested or re-vaccinated, especially if living in a community with a recent outbreak.”

Toasted Skin Syndrome When the house feels chilly, climbing under an electric blanket into a pre-warmed bed is pure luxury. Or maybe, after sitting with your laptop on your lap for an hour, you’ve noticed your legs feel a bit warm. After a few weeks, you may notice a rash on your legs where the blanket or laptop touched you.

It looks like a fishnet pattern, and the skin is red or brown.

That’s toasted skin syndrome, and it can also be caused by heating pads, space heaters, and heated car seats if used long enough. The cure isn’t expensive. Just lower the heat source’s temperature, don’t sit so close to it, or place something between you and the heat. The rash should fade after a few weeks, but if it doesn’t, it could be something else.

Best to check it out with your physician. It could be more than dilated superficial blood vessels under the skin.

Shingles Vaccine May Reduce Risk of Dementia A study conducted in Wales has demonstrated that the liveattenuated shingles vaccination “prevents or delays mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia and slows the disease course among those already living with dementia.”

Further analysis of non-vaccinated participants hospitalized with severe cases of shingles found that they had a 13% higher risk of dementia than people who did not get shingles and an 8% higher risk of dementia than people hospitalized for other infections.

Although they are not yet sure why Shingrix would protect against dementia, one possible reason is that by preventing the chickenpox/shingles virus from reactivating in the brain, it also prevents brain inflammation, which is known to build up harmful proteins linked to dementia. New research could lead to ways to counteract dementia and to better treatments.

If you ever click on health ads that pop up while you browse the Internet , you have probably seen ads for products that claim to help your brain work better or improve your memory. Before you “click and buy,” you should know that 75% of them list inaccurate ingredients and quantities. Many contain unlisted ingredients. Some, like omberacetam and aniracetam, are unapproved. Other ingredients carry the risk of interactions with drugs you may already be taking. Jayne Zange, a neurologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, states, “… there is no magic pill for brain health.” Better advice includes regular exercise, quality sleep, social engagement, reduced alcohol intake, a Mediterranean or MIND diet, and a traditional multivitamin. Take only drugs prescribed or approved by your doctor for mental conditions.

Your Funny Ring Finger If you have noticed your hand grip isn’t as good as it used to be because your ring and/or pinky finger is gradually bending toward your palm, or you can’t lay your hand flat on a tabletop, you might have symptoms of Dupuytren’s Contracture (pronounced “DOOPA-trenz” in the U.S.). This condition involves nodules forming under the skin in the palm of the hand. The nodules can then form cords that pull your fingers toward your palm. The cause is unknown, but the condition is more common in men and progressive. How do you know when to seek medical help? Dr. Abhiram Bhashyam, a hand specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital, suggests, “On the first of every month, put your hand flat on a table. If you can do that, you don’t need treatment yet. If you can’t put your hand flat, you need to see a hand specialist.” The sooner, the better, because it can be treated with injections early on, but surgery may be needed if you wait too long for treatment.

Who’s In the Doctor’s Office You try to make an appointment with your doctor, only to learn you will have to wait two months. That is not much help when your medical problem is happening now. You are offered an appointment with an Advanced Practice Provider (APP). It could be a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or a Physician Assistant (PA). “What’s the difference?” A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with additional education, earning a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). They must pass the National Certification Board exams in their specific specialization through nursing schools.

NPs are qualified to examine and diagnose patients in a health care facility, develop treatment plans, admit patients to a hospital, medical center, or related facility, order diagnostic tests, consult with and refer to health care professionals, perform diagnostic tests, interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe and dispense medications. In Arizona, nurse practitioners may also apply for a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license to dispense controlled substances. In 23 states, including Arizona, they can practice independently without a physician present. In the remaining states, they work under a physician’s supervision.

A Physician Assistant receives similar training to physicians, but in a medical school for future doctors. They are trained as generalists and can also choose a specialty, such as family medicine or surgical technical skills. They can do everything a nurse practitioner can and switch specialties (e.g., from orthopedics to emergency medicine) without retraining or recertification. They may also assist in surgery.

Rather than waiting two months for an appointment, seeing either of these well-trained medical professionals can put you on the path to better health, less discomfort, and the prevention of more serious health problems in the future.

Dangerous Ingredients in Beauty Care Products Consumer Reports has just released an article informing the public about potentially harmful chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products. Two of the chemicals they mention are phthalates and parabens, which are found to disrupt the endocrine system. In addition, PFAS (in mascara and lipstick) and formaldehyde (in nail polish and eyelash glue) increase the risk of cancer. Phthalates are hard to find on labels, such as on shampoo bottles, because they are listed in abbreviations like “DEP, DBP, DEHP, DDP, DINP, or just “fragrance.”

There are two apps, “ClearYa” and “Skin Safe” (developed with the Mayo Clinic’s help), that can help you find safe cosmetics. Just download one to your computer or phone and check before you buy. Some stores, like Whole Foods, have committed to selling only products that avoid more than 240 beauty and body care ingredients, including phthalates and parabens.

Don’t Even Think About Getting into the Ring with Financial Scammers Brian Watson, ROSE

Prior to joining the team at the non-profit R.O.S.E., I spent 28 years in Federal law enforcement. When I warned the public about scams in the late 1990s, it was all about dumpster divers going through your trash to steal your identity. Or poorly written emails from a fake Nigerian prince who wanted to share some money with you. Scams were easy to spot and not so prevalent.

Those days are long gone. The scammers today come from organized gangs of transnational criminals that utilize technology to commit their crimes. They are financial predators seeking to devour their victims. They are ruthless and will not stop until they take every dollar you have.

How big is the problem? According to the FBI’s Elder Fraud Report, Americans 60 years and older reported losing 4.8 billion dollars in 2024. When the 2025 figures are released, I expect the losses to be higher. The Federal Trade Commission reports that less than 20% of Americans 70 and older report being the victim of a financial scam even though this age group has the highest median loss.

There are obvious reasons for not reporting: embarrassment, not realizing you have been victimized, or figuring what is the point since the money is long gone. There is one reason that was recently suggested to me. Many don’t report being victimized because they don’t want their family to find out about the loss because it might result in losing financial independence or even the ability to live on their own.

As a former Special Agent with the IRS, I know criminals target older adults because they come from a more trusting generation, have often accumulated wealth over a lifetime, and are more likely to answer the phone. I used to think that many victims suffered from some sort of cognitive decline. In my two and a half years in the non-profit world, the victims I have met are educated, intelligent, and financially independent. Often their only mistake was answering the phone and getting into the ring with someone out of their league.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are, scammers are professionals utilizing scripts that have been proven to work.

They update these scripts to constantly improve them. The best advice is not to answer the phone if it is from a number you don’t recognize. If the call is important, the caller will leave a voicemail.

If you do take a call and realize things aren’t going well, you don’t have to be nice. You need to hang up the phone. If you were raised well and were expected to be polite to everyone you speak to on the phone, you can make up a lie. Just say you have company, food cooking in the kitchen, or someone on the other line. The scammers are lying to you, so I give you permission to lie to them.

The Art of Daily Life Beginning Without Pressure Sandra Browne

The new year has a reputation, and it is not necessarily a good one. It arrives with expectations and a long list of things we need to improve immediately. I cannot think of a worse way to begin a relationship with anyone, especially myself.

Some years, the new year finds us energized and hopeful.

Other years, it finds us tired, recovering, or simply not in the mood to reinvent ourselves. The trouble comes when we think that the right way to begin is enthusiastically. I mean, who can be enthusiastic about jogging at 5am in February?

The truth is that there is no right way to begin or right time to start. There is nothing magical about January 1st. Each day carries with it the potential for magic moments. All you have to do is pay attention.

In daily life, creativity rarely looks like inspiration striking. It is more about noticing what’s already happening and actually participating in it. It’s not about adding something new to the schedule; it’s about softening our grip on how things are “supposed” to go.

For a long time, I thought creativity required time, materials, and energy — preferably in that order. This meant I was disqualified more often than not. Lately, I’m learning that creativity can be much smaller, kinder, and easier to attain.

It might be the way you make your bed in the morning.

It might be standing at the sink, feeling the warmth of the water as you wash your coffee/tea cup, instead of rushing through the task.

It might be writing one honest sentence, just one sentence, to say how you feel about this new day.

Most moments in and of themselves are not important. They don’t need to be saved, shared, or perfected, but we should pay attention to them because they are part of our lives.

You can begin where you are.

You can begin as you are.

That is more than enough.

A Small Practice for the Month On one of your walks this month, whether for exercise or a destination trip, let your eyes scan the ground now and then.

When a small stone catches your attention, pick it up. There’s no need to know why.

That kind of attention changes things. It makes the day feel less like something to get through and more like something we enjoy hanging out in. And that is where the creative spirit lives - amid those peaceful moments.

Carry it in your pocket, name it if you like, then place it on a windowsill, or keep it beside your bed. Remember the bygone era of ‘pet rocks’? Well, this is not that. This is a tangible reminder to pay attention to the now and take a moment to notice where you are, rather than where you think you should be.

If the new year lacks goals or feels unremarkable, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just human. There is no prize for beginning boldly, and no penalty for beginning gently.

If you forget about the stone, lose it, or accidentally send it through the washing machine, consider that part of the practice. You can always adopt a new one on your next walk.

TPR Foundation Happenings Don Vangsnes, Director

The TPR Foundation concludes its busiest season and it’s been a successful year having contributed more than $40,000 to community organizations serving seniors, as well as here in Trilogy itself. We’ve addressed food security, health and fitness, and cybersecurity with these contributions – if you have ideas about other ways in which we can serve seniors we’d love to hear from you. The funds raised this year will go to the Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Research Center. Dementia touches many individuals, but the families and friends of a dementia patient are also affected by the disease. Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Research Center studies not only the disease, but its effect on the community surrounding that patient – family, friends, care providers, caregivers and response personnel who are often called on to assist with patients.

Update on Foundation Events and Activities Wine Tasting Fundraisers The final wine tasting fundraiser of the season was held on March 30th at Slates with hors d’oeuvres and wine selections. The three wine tasting events from November, January and March proved successful as always, raising approximately $10,000 for the TPR Foundation. Thank you to all of you who attended these events. A special shoutout to the staff at Slate’s for providing great food, service and wine expertise!

R.O.S.E. Seminar March 26th The Resources/Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly (R.O.S.E.) group delivered two educational seminars about fraud awareness and prevention in February and March. Held in the Trilogy Café, more than 40 people attended the first seminar focusing on identity theft protection and cyber safety. Resources were provided for participants along with a lively Q&A session.

Coming Soon The Foundation is finalizing details for a new program we’re calling the Small Grants Program. Its purpose is to support Trilogy Clubs with small grants to ensure that no one is left out of participating in a club and/or its activities due to financial restrictions. After careful consideration, the TPR Foundation Board has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s golf tournament fundraiser. Given the current economic climate and the impact it has had on many organizations and individuals, we felt it was best to postpone plans until a time when participation and support can be stronger across the board. We truly appreciate the community’s understanding and ongoing commitment to our mission.

We look forward to reconnecting and hosting the event under better circumstances in the future.

Water Conservation Tip of the Month

Community Standards Corner Overnight Parking Motor vehicles of Owners and Non-Owners should always be parked in the garage or driveway. Motor vehicles may park on the street only during the hours of 6 am until 10 pm.

Motor vehicles of Guests shall always be parked on the driveway of a house when sufficient parking area exists on the driveway. Such vehicles shall not be parked in a manner that obstructs the sidewalks, impedes pedestrians or traffic in any way. A permit is required if the vehicle must be parked on the street overnight. Overnight parking on streets shall be limited to forty-eight (48) hours during any thirty (30) consecutive days.

Rules for Golf Carts Seat belts and other safety features associated with “street-legal” vehicles are recommended. The CA will not be responsible for injuries to persons resulting from the use of Golf Carts.

R-5.1 Gas-powered Golf carts are not permitted for use in the CA Common Areas.

R-5.2 Drivers of golf carts must have a valid driver’s license.

CHILDREN AND OTHER UNLICENSED DRIVERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE GOLF CARTS. R-5.3 Drivers and/or owners of Golf carts are responsible for any damage or injury.

Welcome Home! New Resident Orientation at Trilogy Finding your way around a new community can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure where to go or how to get started. The New Resident Orientation is the perfect way for residents to become acquainted, meet new neighbors, meet the staff, and begin enjoying everything Trilogy has to offer.

As part of the orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet the Trilogy staff. They will share helpful information about the community, including its amenities, programs, and resources, so residents can become familiar with what is available to them.

Trilogy volunteers will also lead a guided tour of the Clubhouse and Fitness Center, providing an opportunity to explore the community spaces, as well as teach residents how to purchase tickets for Trilogy events through Purple Pass and how to navigate MyTPR to make the most of all the community has to offer.

R-5.4 Golf carts may not be driven or parked on any property within Trilogy at Power Ranch, with the exception of streets, parking lots, concrete driveways, garages, and designated golf cart paths. Golf carts driven or parked in violation of this rule shall be subject to the remedies provided in the CC&Rs, paragraph C-4.7. Unattended Golf carts blocking access may be removed at the Owner’s expense.

R-5.5 Golf carts must be driven on the streets and designated golf paths. They shall be operated in the same manner as other motor vehicles. Drivers shall comply with all laws.

GOLF CARTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE DRIVEN ON SIDEWALKS.
