Public Relations Recap Trifecta Team PR is proud to present our Public Relations Recap for the Masters Basketball Association (MBA) and its 2015 National Championships. During the past year, Trifecta Team PR developed a long-term strategic communications program, as well as a tournament week press operations plan. Once the strategies were approved by the MBA Board, Trifecta Team began the implementation of the plans to keep the MBA brand active on a year-round basis for its team organizers, participants, followers, corporate partners and prospective sponsors. The communication plan included creating the following: a custom newsletter template; tournament week reporting program; sponsorship collateral; press releases; promotional graphics; social media platforms schedule; photo database. A full review of the MBA email database was conducted to refine the lists to ensure current emails along with pertinent data were included. To prepare for media pitches, Trifecta Team staff spoke with select team organizers and players to identify potential storylines. In the weeks leading up to the 2015 tournament, Trifecta Team pitched story ideas and promoted tournament dates with local and regional media outlets. Highlights of the event publicity included stories in two print/online publications: The Sun Sentinel and the Tampa Bay Times. The Masters Basketball Association tournament was also listed in the calendar sections of the Miami Herald, the Palm Beach Post, WPEC-TV, CH.12 (South Florida), WTVJ-TV, CH. 6 (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale FL) and NBC Sports Radio. For the tournament week, Trifecta Team served as the liaison with the Welcome Banquet’s keynote speaker as well as corporate partners. Additionally, Trifecta Team worked with the event photographer to identify image needs for the MBA library to have photos to use for internal and external communications and sponsor needs. Following the tournament, Trifecta Team collaborated with MBA staff to create a post-event survey for team organizers and players to secure insight to help enhance future events. The following pages showcases the work provided by Trifecta Team PR for the Masters Basketball Association.

Palm masters provide spirited play during national basketball tourney

Boca Raton’s Jeff Kelly, right, goes up for a jumper as his Sixth Man Crew squad defeated a team from California to finish first in the 50-Over Division’s consolation bracket at the annual National Men’s Masters Basketball Championships in Coral Springs. Kelly was named to the All Tournament team

Boca Raton’s Jeff Kelly, it’s all about endurance. Playing four basketball games in as many days can take its toll on any athlete, but for a 52-year-old, it can be a real grind.

Kelly persevered, however, as he and his Sixth Man Crew teammates won the consolation bracket of the 50-Over Division title with a resounding 91-46 victory over Our Gang (California) at the recent National Men’s Masters Basketball Championships in Coral Springs. This marks the 31st year the tournament has been staged in Broward County. “It wears you out, but it is a lot of fun,” said Kelly, who was named to the All-Tournament team. “(Last year) I didn’t pick up a basketball again until July.” Kelly has played in the tournament for 11 years. He enjoys the competition, especially facing teams from around the country. “The players (in this tournament) are a lot bigger. They are a lot more physical,” Kelly said. “My game sort of changes a little because I am more of an outside player. I don’t venture inside too much. The bodies are a lot bigger than what I am used to on Saturday mornings.” Those Saturday pick-up games are also highly competitive, with the likes of former National Basketball Association player Billy Thompson and National Football League Hall of Famer Cris Carter involved in the action. Kelly also enjoyed watching those competing in the 75-Over Division, which included four teams. “I wonder how they do it,” said Kelly, who played at the University of Florida. “I would love to do it (at that age). … It is really amazing what those guys do.” Boynton Beach’s Brian Hoffman, 53, has participated in the Masters tournament for about a decade. “Our Sixth Man group has been playing together (recreationally) for about 22 years,” Hoffman said. “You call your own fouls and go up to 110 (points) or whatever. Here, it is different because you have referees. You have competition coming from all around the country. I enjoy it. It is usually good basketball. … It is really competitive. A lot of these guys played college ball. Some of these guys played in the NBA. There are some real players out here.” Sixth Man team organizer Kevin Heller, 59, of Boca Raton, has played in the Masters event since 1999. 5

May 18, 2015 By: Gary Curreri Page 3 of 4 “It is probably the best tournament in the country,” said Heller, who competed in the younger division. “It is one week of reliving your youth. The competition is great. The guys are in great shape.” Although he initially felt he would stop playing at age 50, Heller has been motivated to continue because of the play of those in the 75-Over Division. “It is heartwarming to see those guys going up and down the court playing at that level,” Heller said. “They are running a lot slower than they did in their youth, but they are playing the game the right way.” Dave Hulett, tournament director and chief operating officer, said this year’s event featured 31 teams. There were squads not only from across the state, but also from California, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Washington, Ohio, Missouri and Montana. There also was a team form Canada. The oldest player in the tournament was Dennis O’Brien, 82, from the Windy City Stars team. “Most of the guys in the 75-Over Division have played in the tournament from the very beginning and were in their 40s when they started,” said Hulett, of Coral Springs. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/palm-beach/boca-raton/fl-cnsp-centerpb-0517-20150518story.html

Masters provide spirited action during national basketball play

Fort Lauderdale’s Scott Boynton drives to the basket during the recent National Men’s Masters Basketball Championships at the Coral Springs Gymnasium. Boynton and his South Florida Elite teammates defeated a squad from Chicago for the 50-Over Division title. (Gary Curreri, Sun Sentinel)

Fort Lauderdale’s Scott Boynton has an interesting way of preparing for the annual National Men’s Masters Basketball Championships in Coral Springs. The 50-year-old member of the Coconut Creek-based South Florida Elite team doesn’t play basketball during the year. He prefers to play tennis to lessen the impact on his knees. In the weeks leading up to the tournament at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, he gets a little more serious. 7

May 18, 2015 By: Gary Curreri Page 2 of 3

“I do a lot of biking and a lot of (basketball) shooting,” said Boynton, who had five points in the Elite’s 67-54 victory over the Windy City Stars (Chicago) for the 50-Over Division title. The South Florida squad was powered by Emery Atkinson and Darryl Reshaw, who came through with 16 and 12 points, respectively. “I also do a lot of praying,” Boynton joked. “Five games in five days is tough. You feel it. Every day, you are a little sorer and stiffer. It is definitely a war of attrition for the week.” Boynton is a 10-year veteran of the tournament. “It is nice to see guys still playing and faces that you see only once a year,” Boynton said. “When I was 40, I didn’t (pay much attention to) guys playing in the 70-over (age group), but now that I am 50, those guys are amazing. They are the most impressive of any.” Scott Werner (Coconut Creek) and Louis DeGraffenreid (Coral Springs) not only founded the South Florida Elite, but also built the team into a four-time national championship force with two titles in the 45-Over Division and two more in the 50-Over Division. The team has won two of the last three years (2013 and 2015) in the 50-over competition. It has reached the final for eight consecutive years. “This (title) was really nice,” said Werner, 52, who finished with five points in the championship game. “It was really fulfilling because the first three games, we won by more than 20 points each time. Then we had to go to double overtime to beat Beford Auto Care from Michigan, 94-90. We had three guys who got injured and won it with basically eight guys.” Werner, who works for the Coral Springs Parks and Recreation Department, looks forward to seeing the players return to the city every year. “(There are) a lot of local guys who play ball together year-round,” Werner said. “All of the friendships that we have made over the years with the guys … it’s just fantastic seeing everybody. It is inspiring. It pushes you to keep playing.” 8

May 18, 2015 By: Gary Curreri Page 3 of 3

DeGraffenreid, 53, also gets pumped up as the national event approaches every year. He said the team’s three-point loss in last year’s title game served as motivation this year. “Winning it is awesome,” said DeGraffenreid, who had four points in the final. “You have bragging rights in Coral Springs. We play against Coral Springs players who are on other teams, and they look forward to beating us just like we look forward to beating them. Bragging rights is big.” Parkland’s Mike Noblet, 51, who played high school basketball with Werner and went on to play at the University of Miami, has been involved in the Masters action for 12 years. “I enjoy this tournament,” said Noblet, who hit two 3-pointers in the championship showdown. “I play all year to stay ready for it, so I feel my body is still in good enough shape that I come out and compete. Winning this year puts another notch on our belt.” Dave Hulett, tournament director and chief operating officer, said this year’s event featured 31 teams. “Most of the guys in the 75-Over Division have played in the tournament from the very beginning and were in their 40s when they started,” said Hulett, of Coral Springs. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/coral-springs/fl-cnsp-centerbr-051720150518-story.html

At 54, former Bull still a hoops ‘master’

Photo provided by Masters Basketball AssociationFormer USF basketball player David Bastian, 54, is an annual competitor in the Masters Basketball Association (MBA) National Masters Championships Like many in his line of work, New Tampa-based accountant David Bastian will observe the end of another tax season with an extensive dose of R&R. Running and rebounding, mainly. While Bastian’s getaway will take him to the balminess of Florida’s east coast, the only salt water in which he’s likely to soak is of the Epsom variety. If all goes as planned, Bastian, a 54-year-old former USF guard, will play five basketball games -- NCAA rules -- in as many days. “I’m telling you right now, it’s a tough tournament,” he said. “And there’s pain, and you can’t really prepare for it.” 15

May 1. 2015 By: Joey Knight Page 2 of 2

More than 30 years after his USF eligibility was exhausted, Bastian’s poised to get exhausted again with his annual indulgence of May Madness. He’ll be among hundreds of middle-agers (and older) competing in the upcoming Masters Basketball Association (MBA) National Masters Championships in Coral Springs. Thinking glorified rec league? Think again. The field is rife with guys with college and pro experience. The level of intensity’s as profound as a varicose vein. Past participants include NBA alumni Tim Hardaway, Artis Gilmore, Mitchell Wiggins and Billy Thompson; and even Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter. Consider this line from the MBA website: We cannot over-emphasize the very competitive nature of these games. “It’s not for everybody,” Bastian said. Bastian’s playing this year in the 50-over division for 2014 runner-up South Florida Elite, which lost to Bastian’s former team in last year’s finals. His current roster includes 52-yearold Tarpon Springs boys coach Jerry Woodka, former UNC-Charlotte player Emery Atkinson and University of Miami alumnus Mike Noblet. Woodka, who played overseas and spent time with some short-lived domestic leagues, has been competing in masters-type events for more than a decade. His first impression? “The competition level,” he recalled. “Most of the guys were definitely high school players and a lot were college, and a few were either former NBA guys or European players, and they still had the love for the game like I do. They were in great shape, and the pace of the game was still fast. It was just very, very good basketball.” The tournament’s parameters are clear. The seven age divisions range from 40 to 75-and-older. Older players can compete in younger age groups, but not vice versa. There are two 20-minute halves and a 35-second shot clock. Three rounds of pool play are followed by semifinals and a title game. That’s up to five games in as many days. By week’s end, even the young at heart realize hamstrings aren’t so ageless.Small price to pay for the competition and camaraderie. “It’s just a bunch of former college guys that like to keep playing and are lucky enough to keep playing,” Bastian said. “You go to those things and you see people and friends, and the older you get, you appreciate it more.” http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bulls/at-54-former-bull-still-a-hoops-master/2227975

A win for the ageless: Woodka’s team wins 50-over national title One of the most fulfilling weeks of Jerry Woodka’s adulthood transpired something like this: Spend quality time with your mom in the mornings, turn back time at night. Eighty-year-old Judy Buchanan was among the spectators at Coral Springs Gymnasium watching her son, Tarpon Springs’ veteran boys basketball coach, lead his 50-and-over team to a championship at the Masters Basketball Association (MBA) National Masters Championships. Woodka, 52-year-old point guard for South Florida Elite, was named his division’s MVP. “My whole objective was, my mother’s got some health issues, so that’s kind of why I went down there; she had to go see some specialists,” Woodka said. “And I was just fortunate enough that all her stuff was in the morning...and I got to play in all the games at night.” With Woodka engineering a brisk pace, by nearly any age group’s standards, South Florida Elite won four of its five games by double digits. Its only tight contest was a 94-90, doubleovertime win against Canada’s Bedford Auto Care in the semifinals, in which Woodka scored 16 including two free throws in the final minute of the second OT. He reached double figures in three of the five games, earning divisional MVP honors for the second time in five years. In 2010, he was named 45-over MVP after helping lead the same nucleus of players to the tournament championship. “We had a nice group of guys,” Woodka said. “We had good guards, good big men, but my forte is to run up and down the floor and I had guys that kept up with me. ... Guys that have the love the game just like I do.” http://www.tampabay.com/hometeam/blog/win-ageless-woodkas-team-wins-50-over-nationaltitle/22680/

The Best Masters Basketball Players Return to South Florida in May for National Championships For more than 30 years former NBA, Euro basketball and NCAA basketball players have flocked to South Florida to play in the National Masters Basketball Championships. Some of these players have recognizable names such as former NBA stars Tim Hardaway, Billy Thompson, Mitchell Wiggins, Artis Gilmore and Wali Jones. The other players may not have the same name recognition as these former all-stars, but most have competed in the collegiate ranks and all continue to actively play in their local area. These athletes arrive at the tournament each year in excellent condition and play a full week of basketball with their peers and compete to be their respective age division’s champion. The National Masters Championships, managed and operated by the Masters Basketball Association (MBA), is taking place this year from May 4-9 in Coral Springs, Fla. and annually attracts more than 30 teams - 400 players ages 40-75+. The teams are comprised of players from all across North America nd, in recent years, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Team organizers typically recruit players from across the United States. The MBA even offers a “free agent” pool of players, who are interested in playing but are not part of an existing team. The National Masters Championships has earned a reputation of being the premier event of its kind in the United States. The MBA staff provides a highly organized event that plays an Official NCAA game. Games include a 35-second shot clock, three NCAA qualified officials and a fully staffed scorer’s table, that manages the scoreboard, shot clock and score book. This format was a surprise to former NBA All-Star and current assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons, Tim Hardaway, who has played in the National Masters Championships for five years and is a two-time event MVP. “I think it’s a great tournament. I love the aspect of people going out there, being competitive and having fun. Just watching these guys play out here is amazing,” said the former 13-year NBA veteran.

39

Hardaway, who was a first-round selection in the 1989 NBA draft and averaged 17.7 points per game in his career, went on to say that he supports what the National Masters Championships represent for the older basketball community. “You get a kick out of older guys playing and seeing old friends from all over the world still playing basketball, “ said Hardaway. “I encourage people to go out there and support it. These are real people that love playing the game, this is real basketball.” Even former NBA player and current Golden State Warriors’ broadcaster Jim Barnett couldn’t help but gush about how great the environment has been every year he participated in the Championships. “My love for basketball kept me coming back,” said Barnett. “When you’re out there with a jersey and shorts, it gets competitive. Every game is big and you feel the same adrenaline, joy and disappointment that you did in your playing days. That quest of competing and playing to win is what was so great about it.” In addition, despite the presence of stars such as Hardaway and Barnett, there are still plenty of individuals that are recognized by the MBA for their professionalism and sportsmanship. One such individual is Damon Ellison. Ellison, an Indianapolis native was named “Sportsman of the Year” by the MBA at the 2014 Welcome Banquet. The most coveted award given by the MBA, it recognizes individuals, who over a number of years have exemplified all the qualities of competitive sportsmanship both on and off the court. Damon has been a long time Team Organizer of the Indy Phantoms and a strong supporter of the tournament. Other awardees are listed on the MBA web site. This award shows that the tournament is about more then who has the flashiest moves or scores the most points on the court. The players, fans and officials who take part in this tournament have a great respect for each other and for the game of basketball. “Our team organizers and players have told us over a period of many years that this tournament is the best in the United States,” said MBA Chief Operating Officer Dave Hulett. “Our tag line is merely a reflection of their opinion. We continue to work very hard to deserve that reputation.” “We are also very excited that we will have a four-team division of 75+ playing full court basketball. These guys, with several in their 80’s, are the pioneers of this tournament and we can’t wait to see them all in action.”
