Leading Ladies - Love’s Legacy
BY: Catherine King
An anonymous, beautifully handwritten card rests on your kitchen table addressed to “The Leading Lady”, and the nearly unsealed envelope beckons you to open it. Upon extracting the card from its crisp linen envelope, you find an invitation within: Will YOU join us?
A historical review of women who have stood in history as beacons of leadership reveals the undeniable significance of women's legacy role and impact over the generations. Countless names emerge as love-led leaders who have left visible and lasting legacies through their leadership.
Consider Mother Theresa's profound compassion and service to people experiencing poverty in India. Study Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female Prime Minister leading powerfully to become known as the "Iron Lady." Remember Rosa Parks, who sparked the civil rights movement through her clarity of position and persistence. These powerful women left their mark of life and love on history and made the world better.
Amelia Earnhardt gave us a flight. Jackie O gave us a model of elegant strength. Cleopatra demonstrated strategy and political acumen. Oprah Winfrey leads through her media role, bringing inspiration and empowerment. Martha Stewart led a generation to understand the beauty of culinary and homemaking arts. Suze Orman paved the way for women to find financial strength and freedom. And we celebrate the countless nameless leaders in homes and communities worldwide who shape lives daily and create a culture that inspires others to greater heights.
So, what makes a leader who shapes history? What are common threads shared by women of influence? What or who inspires you in your leadership?
Some top traits include the following:
Vision: They see something beyond their present and direct their energy toward that greater goal.
Confidence: They believe in themselves and others to create a unified movement with others.
Integrity and Authenticity: They live in an unwavering commitment to consistency and authentic presence.
Empowerment: They call others up and into the Vision.
Love: Perhaps the most defining factor for women in leadership and legacy compared to men is how love shows up through them as leaders.
By nature, women are nurturers, driven by a desire to see others succeed and thrive, led by compassion and empathy, and prioritize the needs of others. Women treasure relationships, whether in the home, teams, or communities.
Unity and collaboration with others are another expression of women's love in leadership. Women are emotionally intelligent and operate more fluidly "from the heart," and they care about a people group or a cause that motivates them to act and rally on their behalf.
Indeed, love drives women and fuels their passion, determination, and commitment to positive impact. Angela Merkel, Former Chancellor of Germany, captures it this way: “Love is not a soft or passive attribute of leadership; it is a powerful force that drives positive change, fosters innovation, and builds strong, resilient teams.” And that truth is beautifully revealed in the love-led leadership of women.
Women leaders have been and are the front runners in making a noteworthy impact by leading with love across various contexts. They exemplify empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to create meaningful change, whether in business, nonprofit organizations, education, community activism or within their families.
By creating caring environments, prioritizing well-being, championing social causes, and nurturing relationships, women leaders are leaving a legacy of love across the globe. Through their leadership, the transformational power of love continues to shape societies, inspire others, and pave the way for a more hopeful and brighter future.
