2024 SENIOR GUIDE & DIRECTORY • May 4, 2024 3 Please frequent these businesses for all your senior living needs.

Are you afraid of growing old?

Aging: the one fate that no one can escape. Often it is marked by apprehension, a worry that old age means illness, loss of one’s faculties, and independence. And, of course, we worry that aging means, inevitably, death. This fear tends to gain ground as people reach their fifties, which means that many baby boomers now have to learn to cope with it.

Aging has never been easy, but in today’s society we also have to deal with the increasingly pervasive cult of youth and beauty, which implies slim and active bodies — bald heads, bulging waistlines,

and wrinkles must be hidden away. And now, with supplements and surgeries, mo dern medicine is even offering to reduce the hold old age has on our bodies, at least for a short while.

Nevertheless, the reality is that we are living longer, healthier lives than before. As they say, 50 is the new 40! All the same, some people have the mistaken impression that our right to happiness decreases as the number of candles on our birthday cakes increases. In a society where everything occurs at breakneck speed, living for the present and taking advantage of every moment of pleasure that life brings our way is still the best way to stop the clock. Enjoying a walk with your loved one, a supper with friends, or icecream with your grandchildren are great ways to stay young at heart.

Of course, time passes and growing older is unavoidable. Our bodies sag and energy fades. But at the end of the line, it’s up to us to choose if we grow into our golden years joyfully or by just fading away.

6 summer activities to do with your grandchildren

FUN AND

MEMORIES ARE GUARANTEED!

Spending time outdoors with your grandchildren is a great way to create memories while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. Here are six outdoor activities you can try to make the most of your summer:

1. Have a beach day. Pack beach toys, towels and a picnic for a fun day in the sun. Build sandcastles, play Frisbee and swim to your heart’s content!

2. Go hiking. Take an age-appropriate hike with your grandchildren. Easy walking trails allow you to observe nature while encouraging an active lifestyle.

3. Arrange a treasure hunt. Organize a treasure hunt in your yard or a nearby park. Prepare fun clues for the children, encouraging them to explore their surroundings while solving riddles.

4. Host a painting workshop. Get canvases, brushes and paints, and let your creativity flow outdoors.

5. Go on a bike ride. Choose a path suitable for your grandchildren’s age, and make sure you wear helmets. Cycling is a great way to get exercise while taking in the sights.

6. Do yoga. Choose a peaceful spot, bring some yoga mats and enjoy an energizing session in the great outdoors. Yoga can help improve your flexibility and concentration while reducing stress.

Doing these activities will give you a unique chance to bond with your grandchildren while encouraging their physical, emotional and social development. This summer, get a taste of the great outdoors and make some unforgettable memories as you explore nature!

Strength training isn’t just for young people!

Strength training is often considered exclusively for young people with perfect bodies. However, this isn’t the case! There are many benefits to strength training at any age. In fact, older adults need to engage in this type of exercise. Here’s why.

IMPROVE STRENGTH AND BALANCE

Strength training targets vital muscle groups to help improve your strength and balance. These benefits are crucial for preventing falls and maintaining your independence as your body mass decreases with age.

ADAPTABLE TRAINING PROGRAMS

The exercises can be customized to accommodate your

physical limitations, fitness level and personal goals. You can easily work at your own pace and within your limits.

PREVENT CHRONIC DISEASES

Strengthening your muscles helps prevent chronic diseases associated with aging, such as osteoporosis and arthritis. Lifting weights also helps keep your bones and joints healthy.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

Weight training stimulates the release of endorphins, which can help improve your mood, reduce stress and promote mental well-being.

SOCIALIZATION

Strength training can be a great way to socialize and build camaraderie, especially when participating in group classes or sessions with friends.

In short, strength training is an excellent way to improve your overall health at any age. However, it’s always important to consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.

WARM-UP

Before you start, do some light stretching, bending and rotating to help prepare your muscles and joints.

DIVIDE UP YOUR TASKS

Avoid overloading your day by breaking tasks into shorter sessions. This will help maintain your energy levels without unnecessarily tiring your body.

USE THE RIGHT TOOLS

Ergonomic, lightweight tools make cleaning easier. Extendible brooms and vacuums, as well as appliances with adjustable handles, can help minimize the strain on your joints.

WEAR SUPPORT ACCESSORIES

Knee pads, lumbar belts and protective gloves are essential for certain tasks. Don’t hesitate to use them if you need to.

ADOPT GOOD POSTURE

Poor posture can quickly lead to discomfort and even injury. For example, bend at the knees rather than the waist and keep your back straight to reduce pressure.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

If a task is causing pain, stop immediately and ask for help. Remember that listening to your body is essential to avoid injury.

Visit your doctor if you’re injured.

Social Security is a social insurance program instituted by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935. The program consists of retirement, disability and survivor benefits, and workers in the United States contribute to Social Security each week. The decision about when to claim Social Security retirement benefits is one all those who have contributed to the program must

Online learning resources for seniors: stay curious

Are you looking to expand your knowledge and learn something new? Fortunately, there are plenty of online learning resources available that are specifically tailored to seniors.

One great resource for seniors is Coursera, an online learning platform offering courses from top universities around the world. You can take classes on topics ranging from computer science to psychology, and everything in between.

Moreover, many world-renowned museums offer both free and paid virtual tours, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian. You can tour art and history collections from the comfort of your home.

Another great resource is TED Talks. These short, infor mative videos cover a wide range of topics and are presented by experts in their fields. You can learn about everything from the latest scientific discoveries to the art of storytelling.

eventually make. In recognition of the difficulty of that decision, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers the following tips to people wondering when they should begin collecting their Social Security benefits.

• Confirm your full retirement age. Full retirement age refers to the age at which people can begin collecting their full benefits. Depending on the year you were born, you can begin collecting your full benefit at age 66 or 67. Claiming your benefit before you reach full retirement age will lead to a permanent decrease in your monthly benefits. Conversely, claiming after you reach full retirement age will lead to a permanent increase in your monthly benefits. Since the stakes are so consider able, it's vital for adults to confirm their full retirement age before they claim their benefits.

percent higher than it would have been had you claimed your benefit at age 62.

• Budget for retirement. Short- and long-term budgeting for retirement can help you assess how much money you will need to cover your expenses when you stop working. This step can help you understand how much a reduced or increased Social Security benefit will affect your bottom line in retirement.

• Continue working. Remaining in the workforce full-time or even part-time can have a considerable impact on the size of your Social Security benefit. The CFPB notes that continuing to work for one or two additional years can replace low- or no-income earnings from your earnings record, thereby increasing your benefit.

Are you dealing with low vision? It’s not uncommon for your eyes to weaken as you age, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some simple adjustments to improve your living space. Here are five low-vision accommodations that can make a big difference:

• Delay claiming if you can. The CFPB notes that you can expect to get an additional 5 to 8 percent in monthly benefits for every year you wait to claim your Social Security benefits after age 62, maxing out at age 70. If you can afford to do so, wait to claim your full benefit until age 70, as doing so can translate to a benefit that's 32

1. Brighten things up. Add table and floor lamps in areas of your living space which may be dim or shadowy, such as entries and stairways.

2. Control glare. Use window blinds and drapes to control glare and hang mirrors in areas that won’t produce a reflection.

If you’re looking for something more interactive, you might want to check out Skillshare. This online learning community offers thousands of courses on topics like photography, graphic design and cooking. You can even find local experts to help you hone a new skill.

Why not embrace your curiosity and dive into the world of online learning?

• Consider the long-term needs of your spouse. Surviving spouses receive the higher of the two spouses' benefits. So it makes sense for the higher earning spouse to wait to collect his or her benefit until he or she reaches full retirement age. The decision about when to collect your Social Security benefit is complex. Discussing your options with your spouse and financial advisor can help you make the most informed decision.

How traveling after turning 50 can be great

you can make in your

Many people face turning 50 with a little trepidation. They may miss the things they did during their youth and might feel like the hands of time are moving much too quickly. But instead of looking at aging as growing older, men and women can embrace turning 50 and the growing freedom that typically accompanies reaching this milestone.

living space

Read reviews in travel forums or on travel websites to find out which brands or places offer the best deals.

Increased opportunities to travel is one aspect of reaching 50 that excites many men and women. Nielsen reports that, over the next five years, around 80 million Americans will fit into the 50+ age bracket. Many of these people will have extra time to devote to leisure activities. AARP, the leading nonprofit organization for aging adults, says that of the people with AARP memberships, nearly two-thirds take advantage of travel discounts and other benefits in a typical year. The following are some such travel perks.

• Age can mean discounts. The minimum age to qualify for 'senior' discounts varies among companies and for different products and services, so it's up to travelers to see what is available to them. Not all companies advertise their senior discounts.

• More discretionary time. Even if retirement is a ways down the road, older adults may have accrued more vacation time than their younger colleagues. That time can be translated into longer or more frequent trips.

• Age-based memberships. Reaching age 50 or 60 may entitle people to join groups that negotiate deals for their members. For example, the minimum membership age for AARP is 50, meaning travelers who join AARP can enjoy discounts roughly five years before they're eligible for senior discounts offered by other organizations.

Are you dealing with low vision? It’s not uncommon for your eyes to weaken as you age, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some simple adjustments to improve your living space. Here are five low-vision accommodations that can make a big difference:

1. Brighten things up. Add table and floor lamps in areas of your living space which may be dim or shadowy, such as entries and stairways.

• Travel during off seasons. When not constrained by school schedules, men and women over 50 can travel during times of the year when prices are most affordable. This means savings and smaller crowds. This flexibility also can translate into airline discounts, as men and women over 50 with no time constraints can choose to be standby passengers in exchange for discounted or free tickets

2. Control glare. Use window blinds and drapes to control glare and hang mirrors in areas that won’t produce a reflection.

You can also use paint in a contrasting colour to mark electrical outlets, oven dials and other items for easy identification.

4. Secure flooring. Replace old, worn or wrinkled carpeting and rugs that could cause tripping. Use nonskid, non-glare cleaners on smooth floors to prevent falls.

5. Label and mark. Use colour-coded labels to distinguish between medicines, spices, foods and other items. You can also use tactile markers, such as raised dots or lines, to differentiate between items.

These modifications can be done gradually over time and are often simple and inexpensive. Don’t let low vision stop you from living your best life.

Need Medicare? Easy ways

(BPT) - Some 60 million Americans receive Medicare benefits each year to help pay for health care and prescription drugs, according to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that runs the program. Yet, many don’t get the right benefits for their health needs and their budget.

“The biggest mistake people eligible for Medicare make is that they don’t know enough about their options,” says Kyal Moody, president of Medicare Benefits Solutions, a new offering from Health Compare. “As a result, people don’t get the benefits they deserve.”

Confused about which plan is right for you or your loved one? Medicarebenefits. com can help. This new, free service lets you compare Medicare plans. Here are three other ways to help ensure you get the benefits you and your loved ones deserve:

Know the options. Two of every three eligible people are enrolled in Original Medicare, according to CMS. The rest have chosen a Medicare Advantage plan, a popular option increased at 8% per year compared with less than 1% for Original Medicare. What makes Advantage plans so popular? In addition to covering all Medicare services, some Medicare Advantage plans also offer Medicare beneficiaries extra coverage through supplemental benefits, such as vision, hearing and dental services. Some also offer prescription drug coverage (Part D) as part of their plan. Review your plan’s drug coverage annually. Look for changes in prescription drug formularies - the list of medications

covered by your drug plan. If a prescription drug drops off the formulary it could cost thousands of dollars if you don’t switch to a plan that pays for your medication.

Do a benefits check-up every year. Both knitting and crocheting are known to reduce stress levels. The repetitive motions and focus required in these activities can have a calming effect on the mind and body, like meditation. This makes them a great way to combat anxiety and depression.

Moreover, these activities can also improve your cognitive function. Knitting and crocheting require the use of both hands, which helps improve hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. Following a pattern and keeping track of the stitches can also help to sharpen your memory and concentration.

Knitting and crocheting can also be beneficial for your physical health. The motion of these activities can help to relieve joint pain and stiffness, which is especially beneficial for those with conditions such as arthritis.

Birdwatching for seniors: how to get started

If you’re looking for a fun and engaging way to improve your health, give knitting or crocheting a try.

Birdwatching for seniors: how to get started

Are you a senior looking for a new hobby that’s both relaxing and rewarding? Birdwatching might just be what you need. Not only is it a great way to get outside and spend time in nature, but it’s also a fantastic way to spend time with friends and family who share your interests.

Are you a senior looking for a new hobby that’s both relaxing and rewarding? Birdwatching might just be what you need. Not only is it a great way to get outside and spend time in nature, but it’s also a fantastic way to spend time with friends and family who share your interests.

First, you’ll need a good pair of binoculars and a birding guide. You can find these at most outdoor supply stores or online. Once you have your gear, it’s time to head out into the great outdoors.

One of the best things about birdwatching is that you can do it just about anywhere. Whether you’re in a local park, on a hike or even in your backyard, there are

always birds to be found. To get the most out of your birdwatching experience, try to go out at dawn or dusk when birds are most active.

As you start to spot different bird species, try to take note of their distinct features such as their size, colour and shape. You can even bring along a notebook and jot down your observations. This will help you identify the different species later and add to the fun of the experience.

Why not give birdwatching a try? You might just discover a new passion that will keep you entertained for years to come.

Innovative fitness programs for seniors

It is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age.

The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health.

Today's seniors have more fitness options at their disposal than ever before. SilverSneakers¨ is the leading community fitness program for older adults in the United States. SilverSneakers¨ members can participate in specially curated programs at participating gyms and community centers across the nation. According to the organization, there are more participating fitness locations available than there are Starbucks¨ coffee establishments. Classes are fit for everyone, no matter their experience level.

Those concerned about gym costs may find that SilverSneakers¨ already is included in their Medicare Advantage plan for no additional cost. Plus, there is access to healthy living discounts from participating businesses.

As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.

What sufficient sleep does for the human body

Sleep is an often unsung hero of overall health. Diet and exercise get their fair share of glory, but without a good night's rest, even the most physically active, nutrition-conscious individuals are vulnerable to a host of ailments and illnesses.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most adults need seven or more hours of sleep on a regular schedule each night. Athletes may even benefit from additional sleep. In fact, a 2011 study published in the journal Sleep examined the effects of sleep extension on the athletic performance of collegiate basketball players. That study found that athletes asked to extend their normal sleep times exhibited faster sprint times and increased free-throw accuracy and a reduction in fatigue at the end of the sleep extension period.

Improved athletic performance is not the only way that sufficient sleep benefits the human body.

Sufficient sleep and the immune system- The Mayo Clinic notes that the immune system releases proteins called cytokines during sleep. The release of certain cytokines needs to increase when individuals are experiencing infections or inflammation, which is one reason why doctors often recommend extra sleep to sick patients. Without adequate sleep, the immune system may not produce enough cytokines, and that can increase the frequency with which individuals get sick.

Sufficient sleep and weight gain-

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports there is mounting evidence to suggest a link between insufficient sleep and weight gain and obesity. Studies exploring this potential link have been conducted for decades and have examined how sleep affects people of all ages and genders. At the 2006 American Thoracic Society International Conference, researchers who had tracked women's sleep habits for 16 years found that those who slept just six hours per night were 12 percent more likely to experience major weight gain than women who slept seven hours per night. Experts aren't entirely sure why this relationship exists, but the results of various studies support the idea that insufficient sleep is a potential catalyst for gaining weight.

Sufficient sleep and chronic disease- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of various chronic diseases. For example, the CDC indicates that insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk for type 2 diabetes. In addition, the CDC reports that

instances of hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease, and irregular heartbeat are more common among individuals with disordered sleep than they are among people without such sleep abnormalities.

Sleep is not often mentioned alongside diet and exercise as a vital component of overall health. But a good night's rest is no less vital to long-term health than a healthy diet and physical activity.
