El Monte, Calif. – A din of diverse noise and chatters with APOGLA brethren and their spouses enjoying the fellowship with abundant food and drinks while shooting the breeze, marked the fruitful Oct. 22 election at the B Nutritious Center in this city. Some attendees garbed in their Sunday’s best converged in jubilation for their solo and group pictorials.
In the waning hours of the gathering, brods and sisses took turns singing along with a karaoke. Not to be outdone,
Brod Christian David and Sis Emma R. Galang swung into action for a “swing dance.” The only thrilling episode of the election was the contest of four candidates vying for three open seats for the Board of Directors. The outcome could go either way.

After all, the four board candidates were APOGLA past presidents who are so accomplished in their own right and worth their salt. They could provide sound wisdom and judgment as board members. They are pre-eminent stalwarts of APOGLA, no doubt. But not all can be winners.
The COMELEC declared Brods Edgar Ninofranco (Beta), Art Rivera (Eta) and Domel Evangelista (Gamma Pi) in that order. They will join the holdover members of the Board: Brods Yusup Maidin and Geoffrey Arroyo of Beta Tau, the incoming prexy Rene Diaz Calvario (Alpha) and outgoing president Roehl Reyes (Chi).
Bro. Rene Calvario who has been egged to run as APOGLA president, finally relented and ran unopposed. “It’s about time,” seemed to be the sentiment.
After being declared officially as the president-elect, this author congratulated him. He quipped, “Remember, you were the one who discovered me.” Bro. Rene was referring to our press releases in the early 1980s in several FilAm newspapers when then Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Assn. of Southern California, the precursor of APOGLA which was being revived after a hiatus of sort. “I called you and inquired how I could join and participate actively,” he reminisced. The rest is history.

A GRA A GRA A GRA A GRA A GRATEFUL TEFUL TEFUL TEFUL TEFUL THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS
By Brother Toti AyoMy fellow brothers, sisters, and familial members,
If October reminds us of APOGLA Election of Officers, the month of November brings to mind the most celebrated holiday here in the US, the Thanksgiving Day. A National holiday celebrated on the last Thursday of November. This year’s Thanksgiving Day falls on the 24th.
Briefly, it was in 1789 that George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government. It should be noted, that subsequent Presidents also designated days of thanks during their presidencies.
This brings to light the name Sarah Josepha Hale, a noted magazine editor and prolific writer, when in 1827, she launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents, and other politicians, earning her the nickname the “Mother of Thanksgiving.”
Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil war, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care, all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He designated Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November.
For our APOGLA, we celebrate our Thanksgiving on a Saturday prior to the National holiday. You will also note that together with this celebration is our Awards Night. This event was made an opportune time for our leadership to recognize and express its thanks and appreciation to members and their family who went out of their way to give notable service/s to the Association in many different ways. A healthy practice as it is for an organization, we used to do this awards and recognition night during our December Affair - until it started to take so much time out of our December Affair Program. Today, our Thanksgiving, along with our Awards Night, is a November event to look forward to.
Looking back, we have come a long way to establish what we have now. Something to be thankful and grateful for. We have a storied past - rich in history and tradition. Admittedly, our past were not all too pleasant. But pleasant and unpleasant as they were, those experiences provided us with the needed growth, a learning experience that we
wouldn’t have learned otherwise. They made us strong. It made us the GLA that we are. Countless shared experiences to be proud of indeed. Surely, they are worthy of emulation.
Let me say this though, that whether we have been with the Association for years or a newer member, the quality time that we give to the Association is what matters most.
Thank you Lord, for taking us this far as an organization. As we reflect on our many blessings, You gave APOGLA family, the gift of quality membership that we are proud of and happy about. We thank You for their benevolence and generosity!
With a grateful heart, we ask for more courage and strength to carry on. In wisdom, we pray St. Ignatius of Loyola’s prayer for Generosity:
Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous, Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight, and not to heed the wounds; to labor, and not to seek rest; to give of myself and not to ask for reward, except the reward of knowing that I am doing your will.
For all that we are, we thank You Lord for Your blessings. Together with all in APOGLA family, we give You our grateful thanks. All for Your Greater Glory.
By this time, I should acknowledge our TNB EIC Sis Fely for keeping me in her calling list to request for an article. It compels me; even as I wonder what to write about. If I must add, with our ongoing monthly newsletter, we encourage more contributors to share their thoughts and experiences through this medium. Sharing your stories with us is certainly most welcome and is greatly appreciated.
Thank you. Maraming salamat po. Happy Thanksgiving! TA11/06/2022

TOUGH LOVE
Based on my experience as I age up going through tough battles in life, I encounter some TOUGH LOVE. We all do. Tough love is an example of unconditional love with your partner, siblings, relatives, kids and even with our fraternity brods and sisses with whom we have shared common denominators, experiences, initiations and rituals.
Tough love is about recognizing faults of our partners and loved ones without being affected or distracted emotionally — overcoming, overlooking or forgiving their faults or sins because we are really stuck with that relationship until one gives up. There’s no turning back, so to speak because it creates more problems especially when you’re married.
As a tax preparer and business consultant, I encounter clients who pour out their problems to me. Sometimes, I also serve as a marriage counselor. So I listen. There’s an issue of division of property. And when the couple don’t agree with what to divide between them with the termination of that relationship, the marriage take its toll like anxiety and no peace of mind. It’s only the lawyers who are benefiting. The more the issue of divorce gets longer, the more the lawyer gets more money from both litigants.
Do you know the meaning of this idiom, “familiarity breeds contempt”? What does it mean?
“
I’ll answer that with an example: Because you know someone very well like a member of your family, you stop respecting them and show your hostility by uttering words that are hurting. In that you think the recipient of that tirade can just bear it or can just take the bullet and just take it for granted. That’s wrong! No matter how we have known each other in a relationship, we have to say our statements lovingly, tenderly and with respect.
Topics to avoid in a gathering I found out are: politics, religion, inheritance and sometimes sports. An avid fan would dispute who is the better shooting guard: Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. Centers Shaquille O’Neal or Kareem Abdul Jabbar; Forwards Lebron James or Kawhi Leonard?
As you know I belong to the old school. I grew up in a family that cannot just answer back one’s father, no matter how wrong or right a father is. Never answer a father. The tough love mentality kicks in. You might face serious consequences like belting you in the buttocks. I know of someone when a son answered his dad here in California. He did not let his son enter the family home. The son slept in his car for many months and didn’t talk for years. The loving mother had no choice but to buy the son a house.
How do you do deal with tough love? Many times, the practice of tough love reveals that a person uses it because they assume their partner is incapable of learning by showing soft love or affection. They assume that is the only way to make their partner understand something and that being ‘soft’ with them won’t help them learn. So they resort to tough love.
This is what our Lord Jesus said: “If someone sins against you, then you’re to confront that person in a respectful way. If he or she listens and repents, you’re to forgive, and the relationship is healed. If there’s no repentance, you must take additional steps of tough love. The purpose isn’t revenge, but redemption.” To me, that’s tough love.
Another way of getting over a tough love situation is: lean on trusted friends to help you remain motivated, confident and on track. This way, you can release your pent-up emotions and feel better. – denino1951@gmail.com
GOINGS ON GOINGS ON GOINGS ON GOINGS ON GOINGS ON
by Sis. Fely MontecilloHAPPY BIRTHDAY to all the celebrants this month! May all your wishes come true! Just a reminder, just enjoy your natal day and please don’t count the candles!
Those born this month, from October 23 to November 22 fall under the zodiac sign of Scorpio while those born from November 23 to December 21 are under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius.
Scorpions are famous for being discreet and secretive, having an air of mystery surrounding them. Their other traits are: fearlessness, passion, creativity, boldness, and fierce loyalty. They are extremely deep and emotional people, and are intense in all they do. They’re natural born leaders. People born under this sign crave intimacy. They have a powerful presence and demanding personalities and their penchant for mystery is what makes them one of the most interesting signs.
Those born under the sign of Sagittarius, however, are known for their energy. It’s a sign that’s always seeking, they are the adventurers of the zodiac. While they can be incredibly flexible and adaptable, they can also be inconsistent. As they’re always looking for the next adventure, they can also abandon whatever plans they may already have. Folks under this sign struggle with commitment in relationships and have a hard time finishing what they have started.
And here’s what we have for November. November 1 - Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead; November 11 - Veteran’s Day, and November 24 - Thanksgiving Day. November 2022 is observed as: National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, National Adoption Month, National Native American Month, and National Diabetes month.

Congratulations to our newly elected President Brod Rene Calvario and the other APOGLA officers who will lead the organization in 2023! We know there’s a lot of challenges ahead but we all feel secure in the thought that many of you are already veterans in serving. We are indeed, assured of good leadership in the year ahead.
We also laud Brod Rhoel Reyes, our outgoing President, and all the 2022 officers for a very successful and active year. You have indeed veered the organization to great heights!
