HUSB AND AND WIFE TANDEM HUSBAND WILL LEAD APOGLA IN 2021

By Brod Dan Nino For the first time due to the pandemic, the Election of 2020 was held via on-line voting from October 21 to October 24. Thanks to the software, ElectionRunner as applied by Bro. Sancho Sy, a member of the COMELEC, it came to pass, was done and over with safely without any hassle.

We elected for the first time a husband and wife tandem as president and vice president respectively of APO of Greater Los Angeles for 2021: Bro. Domel B. Evangelista and Sis. Jennifer Escartin-Evangelista.

The officers who will backstop their administration include Bro. Jobee Jovellanos, secretary; Bro. Troy Agagon, treasurer; Bro. Dan E. Nino, PRO; Bro. Dony Rondilla, ACNA liaison officer and Bro. Sancho Sy, TNB editor-in-chief & publisher.

There were no opposing candidates so all the nominees were automatically elected. The only position to be filled in is Auditor. According to the president-elect, the Execom will convene to appoint an auditor and to be confirmed by the Board of Directors.

Anchored by Bro. Casey Mansilla as chairman, the newly-elected board members include Bro. Lester Arevalo and Sis. Ophel Vita Amon. They will be joined by holdover board members Sis. Hazel Hermoso Salas and Brods Roland Paras as well as outgoing president Bro. Tony Amon and incoming president Bro. Domel Evangelista.

PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE Hello Brothers and Sisters, Thanksgiving Day or other people will say "Turkey Day" is just around the corner! Our daily routine is disrupted by the Pandemic, however we still have received blessings that we can be grateful for.

We started the year 2020 with a bang at the Rosemead Masonic Temple.

The Ladies Night co-chaired by Sis Daemma and Sis Josie Tarculas was well attended and so successful at the Noypitz - Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Marathon Service Mile 13 which is always assigned to APOGLA chaired by our great Bro Edgar "Egay" Ninofranco was successfully done by our members and familial members.

Then we were hit by the Covid-19 pandemic which our physical meeting was disrupted however, thanks to modern technology our monthly GMM and Special Meetings went on successfully via Zoom.US. APOGLA did not have any casualty caused by the virus Covid-19, thanks GOD! Folks, these are blessings that we need to be grateful.

November 21st this year we're going to have Thanksgiving Celebration at the Spring Valley Picnic Area in Griffith Park, City of Los Angeles.

Do not miss it because many will be recognized and maybe you will be one!

Alpha Phi Omega Philippines Greater Los Angeles A 501c3 Non Profit Organization Is spearheading a fundraising for victims of 3 super typhoons (Quinta, Rolly & Ulysses) that recently hit the Philippines specifically the Bicol Region and Cagayan Valley in Northern Luzon. Our kababayans need your help!

So ffar ar w e ha ve identif ied 3 ar eas: areas: we hav identified Phase 1 is Brgy Ombao, Bula, Camarines Sur - a remote barangay which is about 3 kilometer from the town of Bula. We plan to serve at least 500 families in the said barangay.

Phase 2 are the towns of Buhi and Bato, Camarines Sur - Our local chapter of RICAPOAA is already on the ground trying to do whatever they can to help in alleviate the conditions of families affected by these typhoons.

Phase 3 is Baggao and adjacent towns in Cagayan Valley covered by San Jose Parish and St. Joseph the Worker Parish under Rev. Fr. Gerard Ariston P. Perez. There are about 1400 families that are waiting for some help.

Bro. Domel was initiated into the fraternity at Gamma Pi Chaper-UP Baguio, batch 1986, a chapter he organized with APOGLA PP Bro. Bobitte Picazo. Thereafter, he became Prime Chancellor during the academic year 1989-90 and a board member of APO-Baguio Benguet AA from 2001-2003. He joined APOGLA in 2004 and was elected vice president in 2019.

The president-elect graduated with Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Philosophy and Political Science at UP-Baguio. Thereafter, he pursued Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Pacific College. He is now a registered nurse and a case manager at VA Long Beach Medical Center.

The slogan for his administration is: Looking Back, Moving Forward (Building a Tomorrow, Worthy of our Past).

Bro. Domel believes that membership is the greatest asset of an organization. He pointed out that recruitment, screening of new members and acknowledging or recognizing members are essential to the growth of the association.

His action plan during his tenure is: “To continue our monthly activities and services but will also formulate alternatives and new plans, in the process of adapting to the COVID-19 situation. We will plan to have a bigger exposure in the Philippines, increased and better communication with the National Council, and APO Philippines’ local units (Alumni Associations and Chapters); and to establish a relationship with APO-USA thru chapters in universities around Greater Los Angeles.”

“We have increased the number of area coordinators for them to reach out and remind members how we value everyone and that APOGLA will be more successful with their active participation,” he revealed.

Sis. Jen on the other hand is also an alumna of Gamma Pi batch 1995 and became a Lady

Chancellor during the academic year 1996-97.

She became a member of APOGLA in 2004.

She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science with a double Major in Psychology and Sociology at UP-Baguio. A mother of three boys with Bro. Domel, Sis Jen works as Code Enforcement Officer with the City of Anaheim’s Planning & Development Department.

As APOGLA’s vice president for 2021, Sis. Jen’s short-term goals is to continue to be an asset for the organization. She said, “I’ll reach out to our current members and remind them that they are an important part of APOGLA. As chair of our membership committee, I am hoping we can find new and creative ways to meet and encourage new members to join. I believe service is our lifeblood and I look forward to working together as one to create ways to continue to be of service to our organization and community despite the current challenges we face.”

The referendum on how to choose our chairman of the Board of Directors did not reach the 2/3 vote threshold to amend Article 18.1 of our By-laws with only 35 ayes out of 65 who voted. Therefore, it will remain in status quo.

Not all of the 116 APOGLA members in good standing had voted.

To Give, Even Though You Are Also In Need The infamous year 2020 beset by Covid-19 pandemic and three super typhoons in the Philippines is drawing to a close. I hope the coming year will be rosier and flourishing for all of us.

I’m disturbed by the pathetic sights in the Bicol Region, Marikina and Cagayan Valley where hapless people are wallowing in the floodwater and on their roofs. True to its mission, right away, the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) of Greater Los Angeles, a charitable, non-profit 501 C-3 organization has embarked on non-stop solicitation campaign among our APO brethren for relief assistance to the afflicted regions of our Motherland.

As of this writing, APOPGLA has sent $1,000 to Naga City under the auspices of APO Beta Kappa Alumni Association. led by Sis Nancy Rentoy of Naga City. Another $1,000 requested

by Bro. Egay Ninofranco, will be sent to the Rinconada region of Iriga represented by APO Alumni Association of Rinconada-Iriga City headed by Bro. Rafael V. Gonzales. We’re only awaiting the AA’s bank account number.

The St. Joseph, The Worker Parish of San Jose, Cagayan through the representation of Bro. Vic Paredes has also requested relief assistance. It’s on its way. Bro. Vic is a native of Tuguegarao.

The response of APO brods in Greater Los Angeles and other relatives and friends are remarkable. We are trying to accommodate these requests. I hope those who have pledged can send in their donations so we can fulfill our humanitarian and charitable missions in these trying times.

For our early bird recipient, I would like to quote in this column a portion of Sis Nancy Rentoy’s letter of acknowledgment.

“I would like to inform the members of the APOPGLA that as of last Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 I received a message coming from REMITLY that funds have been credited to our BKAA account. It was sent by Sis Irma H. Almazan.“ By the way Sis Irma is the treasurer of APOPGLA. “Right then, I convened our Board and we decided to use the amount to buy 20 sacks of rice to be delivered today as an initial food stuff for our relief operation. This afternoon, we will start the packing of the goods. We are targeting at least 500 households with 5 kilos of rice each, to make some impact, but of course that will depend on the funds that will be coming.”

“Mostly in Bicol are really in need of whatever we can offer as help for them but we chose Ombao Polpog since they were submerged in water since Super Typhoon Quinta. Three typhoons which hit Bicol make them one of the most devastated areas since the place is the catch basin of the Bicol River.

I sent video and pictures thru Bro Mar Garchitorena but you can search it in You tube. Truly, our relief assistance will be most appreciated by our brothers and sisters in the area.”

“My heartfelt thanks to our brothers and sisters who have generous hearts to share.” * * * * As of this writing, there might be two inductions for the incoming officers of APOGLA C-7: One for an informal induction this Nov. 21 at Crystal Spring Picnic Area in Griffith Park, Los Angeles and the formal one on Dec. 19 at Marriott Hotel in Baldwin Park. The first one is outdoors while the parallel one is indoor with limited attendees, mostly the incoming officers and family members. This was resorted to due to pandemic and restrictions. This pandemic killed 248,062 Americans and 11.3 million cases and still surging as of this writing. I hope and pray that we can live normal lives again.

We should not be at the mercy of this virus. However, there’s a new directive from Bro. Tony Amon that this Saturday’s event is canceled. It remains to be seen. * * * * For the first time in the annals of APOGLA, we have a husband wife tandem as president and vice president respectively. I’m referring to Bro. Domel Evangelista and Sis Jenny Evangelista, both from Gamma Pi (UP-Baguio). We wish them well. This could bode well because they can discuss our future activities in 2021 in the confines and comfort of their abode. * * * * Now that the election is over, we should come together under one nation, one flag, one umbrella and one community. Let’s lift one another, uplift each other. Let’s not dwell on what you voted for or the political party you belong to. What matters most is that you exercised your right of suffrage and you voted for the right person who will govern our country in the next four years. We deserve to have a thriving and prosperous nation whose people are healthy and free from sickness.

We win some, we lose some and It’s time to heal our nation and its people for the betterment of America. Our free election is the hallmark and crown jewel of our vibrant democracy. * * * * I will share with you this spiritual reflection and nourishment sent by Bro. Pete Cunag who with his Ateneo college batch 1977, have become a prayerful person with spiritual guidance from several Jesuit communities in the Philippines. Brod Pete was my APO buddy way back in college and is now the president of APO Gamma Kappa AA. Entitled, SOME IMPORTANT LESSONS TO LEARN IN OUR LIFE: “To GIVE, even though you are also in NEED… To ENCOURAGE, even though you are also in PAIN… To LOVE, though you are also in NEED to be loved… To SMILE despite your own PROBLEMS… And to be THERE FOR SOMEONE even though you are also desperately seeking HELP! GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo It’s a month before we celebrate the happiest time of the year! But this year will definitely be a different one-somber and somewhat serious. The reality of the pandemic is upon us and it surely can dampen the spirit. We as a people, always know how to adapt and as is our trait, we always have hope.

Yes, there is hope for in the horizon is a bit of good news. That is, of course, the vaccine for this horrendous virus. *************************** They say November is the best month of the year. It is the perfect balance of fall and winter.

There are many reasons why it is the best month. First, sweater, scarf, hat and boot season is in full swing. Second, we see the colorful leaves around us. Third, you get to vote for it is election month. Fourth, we celebrate Thanksgiving which is followed by Black Friday. Yes, shopping for a bargain time! After Thanksgiving, you can decorate for Christmas and of course, listen to Christmas music. *************************** Those born during the month of November are under the zodiac sign of the Scorpion. Scorpions are tough-minded and biting. They are also determined, brave, loyal, honest, ambitious, jealous, secretive and resentful.

Some important dates for this month are: November 11 - Veterans’ Day; 13th - World Kindness Day; 26th - Thanksgiving Day and the 27th - Black Friday.

And to all the birthday celebrants of this month, we greet you! You’re not getting older, just more DISTINGUISHED! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! *************************** As an organization, we have proven time and again that we can survive! As far as friendship is concerned, we somehow are able to greet our Brothers and Sisters on their birthdays, get to have small gatherings no matter what, keep in touch so we can be up to date with each other’s lives. From this, we even formed a Balut brigade courtesy of Sis Irma Almazan.

In terms of service and leadership, we now have an ongoing fund raising activity for those hard hit by the recent typhoon . We are of course, coordinating it with our Brothers and Sisters in the home country. I can foresee that this will be one successful activity just like the ones we had in the past.

This is proof that APOGLA will never cease in doing what is supposed to be done. We never allow obstacles, difficulties hamper us in our effort towards our goal of Friendship, Service and Leadership.
