TONY AMON IS INCOMING PRESIDENT OF APOGLA

By Dan E. Nino Antonio “Tony” Amon, a registered financial advisor, consultant and businessman was elected as the new president of the Alpha Phi Omega of Greater Los Angeles. Amon who was initiated from Far Eastern University (Alpha Chapter) also graduated with B.S. Mechanical Engineering degree from this university where Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) was founded and formed its first chapter. He will succeed Mike “Boy” Medina, who was initiated from Manila Central University (Nu Chapter).

Comprising the 2020 officers include Jobee Jovellanos, as vice president, Marisol Lee, secretary; Troy Agagon, treasurer, EmmaGalang, auditor; Dan E. Nino, public relations officer and Liza Valera and Glenda Tavera as Sgt.-at-Arms. Appointed as presidential advisors are Edgar Ninofranco, Eric Serrano and Lito Tarculas.

Members of the Board are Mike Medina, Tony Amon, Victor Paredes, Rene Calvario, Alex Pastores, Hazel Salas and Ronald Paras.

In accepting his nomination speech, Amon said, “APOGLA is a well-oiled machine. We are well established.

We don’t have to change anything anymore except to improve if there are still things to improve upon. My main intention is to develop more leaders.”

He quoted Indian political ethicist Mohandas Gandhi, “A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have but how many leaders you have created.”

Amon added, “Through successful recruitment, we can increase the number of members, hence we will be able to develop more leaders. Quality members are from the quantity of members. With the proper use of our resources, we will reach out to all members, both active and inactive and potential new members.”

Amon adopted a motto for his presidency, “Influence Other Through Positive Leadership” wherein we will be the best example.

The executive officers and Board members will be sworn-in by Alpha Phi Omega Council of North America President JV De Castro, Jr. on Dec. 14 at Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Baldwin Park coinciding with the 39th anniversary foundation of APOGLA and 94th anniversary foundation of APO-USA. APOGLA, originally known as APO of Southern California was founded in 1978 with Bro. Jess Castillo as the founding president. Alpha Phi Omega International Service Fraternity was founded on Dec. 16, 1925 by Dr. Frank Reed Horton with a group of 19 scouters in Lafayette College, Easton, Pensylvania. In the Philippines, it was established by Bro. Librado I. Ureta, PhD on March 2, 1950 at Far Eastern University with the encouragement of Scoutmaster Sol Levy, a visiting brother from the U.S. Beyond graduation, the spirit of the fraternity refuses to fade.

During this December Affair and Inaugural Ball, the recipient of the Dr. Librado I. Ureta award will be announced and be presented by 2018 awardee and 2019 LIU Search Chairman Dan E. Nino.

Alpha Phi Omega’s three cardinal principles precepts, its members from various colleges and are Leadership, Friendship and Service. With these universities in the Philippines who are now based in Greater Los Angeles serve or volunteer in the Los Angeles Marathon, Operation Gratitude, Feeding America, Blood Donation,Relief Operations, Provide scholarship grants to selected children of APOGLA children who are college-bound. It also honored in the past The Outstanding Filipino-American Senior Students (TOFASS) with supplemental college scholarship grants.

Larry Itliong Day Celebrated in Full Force and Style Cerritos, Calif. — The Larry Itliong Day on Oct. 25 was celebrated in full force and style with an eclectic of community leaders and public officials with no less than Philippine Consul General Angelito Adelio Soriano Cruz in attendance cum buffet luncheon at Josephine’s.

Congen Cruz in his brief speech narrated where the first FilipinoAmericans landed in what is now the United States around Morro Bay near Santa Barbara and became “assimilated in this country with the largest economy in the world with 2.3 million Fil-Ams living in California. He thanked 58th District Assemblywoman Christina Garcia for hosting the luncheon in honor of the late farm and labor leader and organizer who organized a grape strike with Caesar Chavez on Sept. 7 1965 to bring to light unfavorable working condition in Delano, California.

Johnny Itliong, the son of Larry Itliong was the keynote speaker. “It’s hard to speak about your dad. The farmers then were paid very little. One thing for sure, my dad did so much to organize the grape strike.” He invited Cesar Chavez to labor movement. Itliong and Chavez were leaders of the United Farm Workers.

After his speech, Johnny Itliong told this reporter that his dad was from San Nicolas, Pangasinan. He left his dad’s biography book to the organizers of the event.

According to archives, Democratic Assemblyman Rob Bonta, who authored the bill designating Oct. 25 as the Larry Itliong Day, says it’s important for young people in California to understand the contributions of Filipino-Americans to the state. He says it’s a narrative that’s often not told in history books. The bill was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown which is Larry Itliong’s birthday.

“History was changed, but those stories weren’t being told in the history books, weren’t being captured, and it was important to me for that to change especially in the most diverse state in the country,” says Bonta.

“Itliong who died in 1977 was instrumental in sparking the Delano Grape Strike of 1965, where 1,500 Filipino laborers demanded better pay and working conditions from growers. Itliong reached out to Cesar Chavez, who at the time was a leader of another labor group.”

“The two joined forces, creating the United Farm Workers of America, and launched a series of boycotts and marches that eventually led to agreements for better wages and protections of farm workers in the 1970s.”

“The special designation for October 25 encourages public schools and educational institutions to honor Itliong. On this day, students will participate in lessons and activities that will teach them about Itliong and his achievements,” says Bonta.

“Itliong later broke away from UFW but continued his work of advocating for Filipino farm laborers.”

Assemblywoman Garcia in her brief speech, credited Filipino-American Assemblyman Rob Bonta who soldiered on in the California Legislature to pass the Larry Itliong Day in 2014. “We’re better when we embrace each other, share our common experience and lift everybody up,” she told the motley crowd. Former Cerritos Mayor and current Councilman Mark Pulido emceed the program. Among the dignitaries who attended include Cerritos Mayor Pro-tem Frank Aurelio Yokoyama, Bellflower Mayor Sonny Santa Ines, Artesia former Mayor and current Councilman Miguel Canales, Artesia Councilwoman Melissa Ramoso and Lynda Johnson, the Field Deputy Director to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.

Members of Club Kaibigan from Whitney High School performedthe Tinikling folk dance, the national folk dance of the Philippines. The day was capped by a Filipino love song from Congen Cruz and a duet with former Mutya ng Pilipinas Rosemarie De Vera Javier.

It’s the time for pausing and giving thanks to the Lord for the blessings we receive. We know of course, that we should give thanks to the Lord not only on this day but we should do so as often as we can.

Ironically, this is also the month when brawls take place in malls and stores as they grapple for bargains on Black Friday.

And for this month too, we greet our Brods and Sisters who celebrate their birthdays. Our warmest greetings and wishes for your happiness now and always.

We treasure everything we have learned in school for we are expected to use them in our everyday life . What we learned in our education, we are of course expected to use in our daily life to assure our success in life. Comes now the freedom of speech - a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship or legal sanction.

Voltaire also mentioned “I disapprove of what you say BUT I WILL DEFEND TO THE DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT”.

Nowadays however, it is dangerous to practice this freedom.

One who expresses his thought could face ostracism, ridicule, and insults from parties who have opposing views. To be able to listen to other people’s point of view, not necessarily accepting them, shows how educated an individual is, and also how intelligent he is. For me, however, I would always implement whatever I have learned in the academe. Hurray for freedom of speech!
