APOGLA DISTRIBUTES GOODS TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES By Brod Dan Nino
(Author’s notes: The following article is a reprint from four Fil-Am newspapers in Greater Los Angeles namely: Weekend Balita, US Asian Post, Philippine Tribune and Philippine Post (digital) on September 12 this year. It’s about our August 30 APOPGLA C-3’s first Humanitarian Service Project that was implemented on the ground by APO Gamma Kappa (Ateneo) Alumni Association. So our APOGLA brethren and various publics can participate, more information will soon appear in our website, Facebook page and Tri-fold which are all under construction).

s an offshoot of the joint Emerald Lantern Group and Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA’s fund-raising dinner dance in October 2019, the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) Greater Los Angeles (APOPGLA), Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA, Arizona-based Lichauco Heritage Foundation and APO Gamma Kappa (Ateneo) Alumni Association, picked up the pieces and joined forces to initiate the Operation Gabay in Barangay Sangandaan, Quezon City, Philippines. APOPGLA appointed its implementing arm on the ground, the Manila-based APO Gamma Kappa in the distribution of goods like diapers, wipes, alcohol, vitamins, powdered milk, five kilos of rice and cash of PHP 1,000 each child for their medications who belong to 21 families of GABAY GROUP on August 30. ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE COMELEC Dear APOGLA Brethren, As COMELEC, we are pleased to announce that it’s time again to elect our officers and Board of Directors for 2021. We are asking all the good men and women of this organization who would like to serve our organization to step up to the plate and file for candidacy. Most likely due Covid-19 the election will not be possible to conduct physically next October, so for the first time we will be introducing online voting. prohibited to roam outside of their homes due to Covid-19 restrictions. The goods were also distributed from house to house for some families who could not receive their stuff in person. GABAY is a group of parents of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) that helps in promoting social awareness of rare medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, downsyndrome and epilepsy. The distribution was held with members of Gabay Group, APO-Gamma Kappa Alumni President Pete Cunag and Service Project Chairman Richard Agbayani and Barangay Sangandaan officials led by Kagawad Edwin Vidad. Gabay coordinator Sonia Sadang-Angeles in her summary report said that the volunteers managed to talk to the parents to fully understand their situation. “Rest assured that safety precautionary measures were followed such as social distancing, no physical contact and everyone wore face shields and masks to help flatten the curve.” Sadang-Angeles thanked the various sponsors for providing the funds and goods that made the distribution possible and successful. She enthused, “From the bottom of our heart, we the Gabay members would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone. Gabay founder Henry Sadang who is now based in Southern California also expressed his pleasure for the successful implementation of this humanitarian program. He provided refreshments and snacks to the recipients and volunteers.
Rosemarie de Vera-Javier, former Mutya ng Pilipinas and a Board member of Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA and CEO of Emerald Lantern Group who introduced the Gabay Group to APOPGLA remarked, “Thank you APOPGLA. Through your initiative, many angels are rejoicing and you made our Almighty Father smile.” The nine APOPGLA board members who initiated this service project in the Philippines are Dan E. Here are two patients who are among the recipients of our APOPGLA humanitarian service project in the Philippines.

Due to the remarkable and positive response of this humanitarian program benefiting the disadvantaged children in Quezon City, APOPGLA’s Board Chairman Dan E. Nino said that it will reprise again on December 16 this year to coincide with the 95 th founding anniversary of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity in Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. “The joy of life is in giving, nurturing and uplifting the underprivileged,” he pointed out. Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) of Greater Los Angeles is a 501 C-3 public benefit and charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to “foster the tenets of Leadership, Friendship & Service amongst the youth and the disadvantaged. GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo The month of September is upon us and the bear months have started. Before we know it, Christmas would be here already! Whew! The month just passed by and all form of activities be it social and economic have all but stopped. Never in our wildest imagination did we ever think we would be in the midst of something like this. But we are, so we just have to grin and bear it! ************************** September comes from the Latin word “Septem” meaning seven. Later, when January and February were added to the calendar, it became the 9th month. September is also the first month of the autumn or fall season. Construction week takes place during the month of September. This month is often associated with fire because it was the month of the Roman god Vulcan. Vulcan was the Roman god of fire and the forge. The following are celebrated this month: September 14 - World First Aid Day and Hindi Diwas; September 16 - World Ozone Day; September 21 - UN International Day of Peace and World Alzheimer’s Day. ************************** So what are the traits of a September born? Those born this month are very tolerant and understanding. They are open minded, having reasonable opinion on everything. They are also over thinkers, perfectionists, affectionate, get bored easily and charming. So to all the birthday celebrants this month, we pray that all of God’s blessings be showered over you like raindrops and fill your life with happiness, success and prosperity. Happy Birthday!!! ************************** It is impressive how we are able to carry on a lot of our activities despite this pandemic. They might be toned down now but if you go over our communication in the social media, you will notice among the major activities are: - Fund raising for the scholarship fund and the very positive reaction from the members - We have been able to extend help to our Brothers and Sisters here and abroad. - We have some small businesses going on - We have an active exchange of info about members here and abroad ************************** Good luck to all those aspiring to serve the organization! The voters, on the other hand, have to choose who they think would be able to serve the organization to the utmost!
