PRESIDENT’S MESSA GE MESSAGE

By Mike “Boy” Medina Our Family Picnic was a good summer break for the group which was held at the Don Day Community Center in Fontana, a substitute location to the sudden closure of the Fontana Aquatic Center due to maintenance of the pool. After the picnic everyone headed to Bro. Vic’s residence for the 8th General Membership Meeting.

I would like to thank Bro. Vic Paredes and his wife Christa, for accommodating the group on our 8th GMM. To the August birthday celebrators and Pi Alumni, for sharing your birthday and anniversary celebrations with APOGLA. On Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 8:30 (assembly time) is APOGLA Beach Clean-up Service at 15 1st St, Seal Beach, California, maybe our last service project for the year. After the beach clean-up service will be our General Membership Meeting to be held at Bro. Danny Carrasco’s Residence in 5841 Coldbrook Ave., Lakewood CA 90713. Please be informed that this will also be a presentation of candidates. Our COMELEC will be giving further announcement who the candidates are.

The ACNA Fall meeting on August 30 to Sunday, September 1st, at Holiday Inn-Torrance was well attended by Alumni Association members coming from different states of North America. On The evening of the Banquet, Sis. Ophel Amon, our own APOGLA member, received the ACNA’s APO Service Award, congratulations!!!

At the same time, the APO Golf Friendship Cup was carried out. This is an annual competition between Brothers from Northern California against Brothers from Southern California. This time Northern California has taken away the Friendship Cup from Southern California. Next year, APO South will be heading towards Northern California to try and regain the Friendship Cup. FR OM MY POINT OF VIEW FROM

THIS IS NOT THE AMERICA I KNEW (This opinion was delivered by the author in his recent 8 ½-minute speech at his Eclectic Dialectics Toastmasters Club at The Grove of Cerritos where he was voted as “Best Speaker” by his peers. – Editor) I condemn to the highest level the senseless mass shooting of our people in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio and Odessa, Texas as well as previous and future gun violence.

I now submit that politics and religion cannot be avoided in our conversation in this country and in this forum when lives are involved because our lives matter and they are precious. Let’s not criminalize and dehumanize the color of our skin because we are created by our Maker irrespective of the color of our skin. This is not the America I knew.

There’s no place for hatred in this country. And we don’t want it to happen in our own backyard and elsewhere.

We can’t dissociate politics from this discourse. We can lessen gun violence if we can use the power of Congress to legislate laws: to ban the sale of assault weapons and high-powered guns, conduct universal checks and impose waiting period, etc. Our president promised to support this universal check but shifted his position later after the lobbying of National Rifle Association led by Wayne Lapierre. Are our leaders in the pocket of the NRA because they donate campaign funds to our top leaders and members of Congress? And they don’t want to lose their election?

Assault weapons are used for wars or military enemies not on innocent civilians like you and me.

Guns and rifles are used for hunting, to defend and protect ourselves not used to kill peace-loving and innocent civilians like you and me. We deserve better than this America. Hateful rhetoric by our national leaders have no place in our society. They fuel, ignite, inflame and stoke hatred because of the color of our skin, creed or race.

Instead, we should uplift one another, inspire one another, respect one another, embrace one another, nurture one another and above all, love one another.

It’s irresponsible for a candidate or president with hateful rhetoricto brag that he can shoot anyone on 5th avenue New York and can still win an election and who yells “go back to the country of your origin” to freshmen congresswomen who disagreed with his policies. Or tells the border patrol agents to shoot anyone crossing our borders. This is not the America I knew. We are better than this.

This is not a Republican, Democratic or Independent issue. This is a burning issue for all of us. Our country is a Republican form of government where power resides in the people. We are not a monarchy, totalitarian or authoritarian, fascist or dictatorship.

If we don’t condemn this gun violence as a peace-loving people, then we abet, aid, enable, embolden and become complicit with mass slaughter of our population.

We have a second amendment to our U.S. constitution that reads, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’

In my view, this second amendment to bear arms is to keep the government from being able to impose tyranny.

This means, it is the right of the people to possess firearms to defend and protect themselves. It is non-sequitur and unconnected with service in a militia.

There are more guns, 393 million of them than the population of 240 million Americans.

Why can’t we escape religion too in our discourse? As Jesus said to his apostles, “Love one another as I have loved you. Love even your enemies. When someone slap you on one cheek, give him the other as well. Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. And pray for those who maltreat you. When someone takes your coat, let him take your shirt as well.”

In Matthew 5:3-12, our Lord Jesus told the crowd on Mt. Beautitude, “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be consoled. Blessed are those who are poor for theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who are merciful, for they will obtain mercy. Blessed too are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are those who are insulted, persecutedreceive every kind of slander, be glad and rejoice your reward is great in heaven. Blessed are those who are meek for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they shall be filled. Blessed those who are pure in heart for they shall see God.But woe to you who are rich, you already received your comfort.”

Our nation’s top leader or leaders should heal us, console us, unify us instead of dividing us, incite us, demonize us, inflame hatredand criminalize immigrants. We are better than this America.

We have great institutions. This country is not a failed state like Libya where you can sell high-powered guns, grenades, grenade launchers, bazookas anywhere on the streets with impunity without restrictions. In Libya there are two separate governments in one country.

But we are the United States of America, a nation of laws and not of men. Our leaders are not above the law.

America is the beacon of hope, humanity, decency, world leadership, freedom and democracy. This country that welcomed, sheltered and embraced me is loving by nature. This country that I knew engenders empathy and sympathy.

As Woody Guthrie’s song goes, “This land is your land,this is my land. This land was made for you and me.”And this is the America I know.

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo The ber months have started and yes, December is just a breath away. But first, let us wish our September born Brothers and Sisters “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” and may you have another year of happiness and joy!

People born in September are Virgos. Virgos are critical perfectionists. They are loyal, analytical, kind, hardworking, and punctual. They are also also shy, paying attention to the smallest details and their deep sense of humanity make them one of the most careful signs of the Zodiac. Although they are often tender, their heart might be closed for the outer world.

September is often associated with fire because it was the month of the Roman god Vulcan who was the Roman god of fire. Holidays this month are: Labor Day, Grandparents’ Day, Patriot Day, Constitution Day and Rosh Hoshanah, National Hispanic Heritage month, and National Piano month. So, Happy Birthday again to the celebrants for this month! ************************ Our Sis from Nagcarlan, Sis Ophel Vita-Amon, happily informed yours truly that APO Nagcarlan AA is petitioning for charter membership with APO Philippines. This is a very positive and welcome news. Spearheading the move are: Brod Alexander Irlanda and L VP Arnold Rubio.

In the same breath, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sis Ophel Vita-Amon who was given a special award for exemplary service as treasurer of ACNA, for the year 2017-2018. The awarding took place last August 31, 2019 during ACNA’s Fall Quarterly meeting held in Torrance Holiday-Inn. ************************ Alphan Bro./Dr. MaC Lichauco deserves kudos for his highly successful Medical Mission to Lagasit, San Quentin, Pangasinan in partnership with ACNA and the Lichauco Foundation early this year.

As per ACNA PP Irma Almazan, they were able to serve a whooping 1,200 people for medical, dental, and optical services. Feeding the kids was also part of the mission. Other Brods who were there to manage the activity were: Larry Reseno (1st. VP, ACNA), Marc Barcelona, Alex Almazan, and John Sanchez. Many other Brods and Sisters were also there to assist.

One can just imagine the impact of this kind of mission on the health of our impoverished countrymen who cannot afford to pay for their health needs if we can implement this kind of activity at least once a year in different areas of the Philippines. Imagine how many countrymen we could help. So to everyone involved in this laudable project, congratulations! ************************ Bon voyage to Brod Alex and Sis Irma Almazan on their coming tour of Greece during the last week of this month.

This is in celebration of her retirement from Harbor UCLA Medical Center. She will be joined by her co-workers in the same hospital who will also be retiring just like her. So I wish you both a safe and enjoyable trip! ************************ I can sense that our members are all agog over the coming 2020 ACNA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Many are already making preparations for this exciting event as early as now.
