Dear Brothers and Sisters, This email is being sent with the hope to re-energize and regenerate enthusiasm among us, courage and will to serve in whatever capacity elective or appointive position to willingly serve OUR GLA for 2018 and beyond.

I will lead by example. Brother Toti Ayo will file his candidacy for GLA 2018 President. At the very least, as President, I will look forward to attend the ACNA 2018 Spring Meeting in Dallas, hosted by DFW AA and the ACNA Biennial Convention in Montreal, Canada.

As your GLA President, I will work on the following: 1) Create a ‘Leadership Summit’ composed of willing and able participants to evaluate, re-affirm and re-validate the current affairs of our organization - three years after creating two distinct corporate organizations.

Last August 26, 2017 APOGLA has proven that in its own little way it can make a difference in many lives of our countrymen who have struggled and suffering hunger throughout America. The APOGLA contingent headed by project chairman Brod Roland Paras and Pres./Sis. Betta David trooped to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank warehouse in downtown LA to provide service in sorting and packaging donated foods for distribution to the county’s homeless population.

Thank you to the 42 strong men and women, familial members and friends who volunteered and come together to make this happen.

Time does go by fast… It seems like a year ago when I announced my candidacy to become the next President of APOGLA and here it is now…

I have few remaining months left as President. So for the next three months, I want to focus in giving back what is best for our brothers and sisters. NEVER EVER GIVE UP

If you want the rainbow in life, you got to be willing to put up with the rain. If we really want to live, we’d better start at once to try. Sometimes, patience, perseverance and time are the simplest ingredients to achieving your personal success. If you really think about it, most great achievements weren’t born until lots of time, enormous patience (with yourself) and unwavering perseverance prevail. So, let’s now talk about a few people whose simplified formula for success: “P.P.T.”(Patience, Perseverance and Time) spawned great products! Our story is entitled: “Never Ever Give Up” What do the “Golden Arches”, “Light Bulb” and “Chicken” have in common? Well, read on… and I’ll describe the common denominators of success that these ideas originate from.

Every 5 hours somewhere in the world a new “McDonald’s” fast food franchise is opening. Can you imagine a business which opened its door “Arches” in 1955 is still so strong today? Well, its founder Ray Kroc, sure did. Kroc, was no inventor. But he knew a great idea when he saw one. After all, Kroc’s entire life thrived on discovering just the right idea that would live on well after the man himself. From a paper cup salesman, to real estate broker, piano player, and finally, milk shake mixer salesman, he always had an incredible amount of faith in himself!!

Finally! At the young age of 52 his biggest idea (McDonald’s) was about to emerge. However, Kroc had to muster enough courage in his new idea to once again mortgage his home and borrow lots of money to get it going. Oh! He wasn’t a picture of health either.

He’d been plagued by years of arthritis, diabetes, lost his bladder and most of his thyroid gland. But, he never lost the courage to persevere and believe in himself. In fact, Ray Kroc was known to say: “The best is ahead of me,” according to those who knew him.

The “McDonald’s” brand name is the 2nd most recognizable name in the world, next to “Coca Cola.” Not bad for a 52 year old with health problems, huge debts, and tons of dogged determination!

Ray Kroc was a simple man with a simple plan to achieve huge success. His formula is: #1 Never give up. #2 Always persevere. #3 Don’t forget #1.

Chances are you’re reading this article in a room with the use of lighting. Well, you can thank Thomas Edison for that. Did you know that Edison failed over 9,000 (that’s thousand) times before perfecting the light bulb! How many of us would have thrown in the “proverbial” towel at 20 failures, 150 failures or at the 8,000th failure?

In my opinion, Thomas Edison’s picture should be under the definition of “perseverance” in Webster’s dictionary! Don’t you agree? After Edison had invented and produced the light bulb, a reporter asked him how it felt to fail over9,000 times. Edison replied, “I was glad I found 9,000 ways not to invent the light bulb!” From this point forward Edison went on to receive 1,093

patents, more than any other person in U.S. history. Wow!!

Edison’s formula for success: #1 It takes time for greatness. #2 Be patient #3 Persistence is key What’s, “finger lickin’ good” or “extra crispy?” If you guessed “Kentucky Fried Chicken,” you’re absolutely right! Try to imagine the faith, patience and perseverance necessary to hear the word “NO” 1,009 times! The founder of “KFC” (Kentucky Fried Chicken), Colonel Sanders, was told “No” 1,009 times before he sold his first piece of chicken. Sanders would drive from town to town, restaurant to restaurant, often sleeping in his car , living off his chicken and believing his “secret recipe” would one day pay off. Eventually his persistence and belief in himself paid off big time. Not bad for a 65-year-old! Though Sanders never let the public in on his recipe, he did discuss his recipe for his success: #1 Never quit. #2 Always believe in you. #3 Be patient. #4 Be positive.

As you can see, the common traits between Ray Kroc, Thomas Edison and Colonel Sanders are simple and direct.

Perseverance… Patience… Time…Belief…

Whatever it is you’re trying to achieve in your precious and valuable life, I’m convinced these traits must be present. Especially, belief!

If you don’t believe, you won’t achieve.

2) Our organizational setup and meeting schedules, for the BOD, the Executive and the GMM, were structures made way back in 1986 when we ratified our then by-laws created by an 11-member Constitutional Commission created for the purpose. Along the way not long ago, the term of office of the BOD has been changed from 1 year to 2 years. Its meeting schedules has to change too. It is time for us to ‘simplify’ and make matters less taxing and less complicated for those who serve.

3) There will be more . . . they will come out in a ‘leadership summit’ setting. Brainstorming is a necessary part of our or of any organization for that matter. We shall continue addressing each other Brothers and Sisters. But we shall also make sure that we are friends or I must say ‘stronger bond of friendships’. It is an effort that everyone is expected to put in his/her share into. This is an organization where we willingly chose or choose to spend much time with. We shall make sure that every effort is meaningful and all worth it. Again, I say, this is a place where we find friends for a lifetime. We welcome as we always do, all who share these basic principles.

Somewhere, these words I read: ”Everyone’s journey [OUR journey) will be filled with hopes, dreams, challenges, setbacks and goodbyes. We must strive to make the best of it . . . no matter what. We must constantly strive to understand our travel companions and look for the best in everyone . . . At certain stops there are surprises. Some of these will translate into great moments of joy, some will result in profound sorrow . . . “ May these great moments of joy be ever a part of our journey - together. And may these profound sorrows keep us together, stronger than ever . . .

4) Having said all of the above, I only hope that some among us will step up to the plate and heed the call from our President, Sis Betta. I must reiterate that indeed, your past leaders will be there to guide and support you as necessary 5) Above all, dear friends, brothers and sisters, Brother Toti Ayo for 2018 GLA President is a HOAX . . . :) Yes, a HOAX! This is just an effort to engage anyone and everyone to be part of The Action! We call on the younger generation to step up. No better time. No better place.

The Berlin Wall Reminds Us Of The Cold War (Last of Three Parts)

Berlin, Germany – As an avid student of World History and International Politics, I chose Germany as my last itinerary in my recent Dream European Journey.

My desire to visit Germany was intensifiedwhen the late President Ronald Reagan challenged his counterpart Soviet leader Mikhael S. Gorbachev in his address on June 12, 1987atthe Brandenburg Gate before a large crowd. Prophetically, two years and a half later on Nov. his German fiancée. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the capital moved back to the unified Berlin.

On our way back to our hotel, we took advantage of shopping more souvenir items and dropped by Willy Brandt Museum& Library. My Dream European Journey: The Berlin Wall Reminds Us of The Cold War

In 1971, Brandt received the Nobel Peace Prize for ‘Ostpolitik’, his policy of reconciliation with Germany’s neighbors in the Eastern Bloc.

It will be recalled that the U.S., Soviet Union and other Western allied nations fought alongside against Nazi Germany. After the defeat of Germany, Soviet Union forces arrived first in East Berlin and established its stronghold. Thereafter, the United States, United Kingdom and France arrived and occupied the Western part of Berlin. Little did the U.S. and its allies realize later that Russia want to establish its kind of socialistcommunist ideology aimed to nationalize property and industry in the East German zone.In 1948, following disagreements regarding reconstruction and a new German currency, Joseph Stalin instituted the Berlin blockade preventing food materials and supplies from arriving in Berlin. The U.S., Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other several other countries began a massive “airlift” supplying West Berlin with food and other supplies. This concrete barrier stretching 100 miles with a height of 12 feet divided this city from Aug. 13, 1961 till it was demolished on Nov. 9, 1989. This Berlin became known as “Iron” Curtain between Eastern and Western Europe. However, West Berliners and West Germany which developed into a Western capitalist and became more prosperous with a social market economy and a democratic parliamentary, about 2.5 East Germans moved to West Germany between 1949 to 1961 with about 200 escapees killed.

After a series of revolutions in 1989 in nearby Eastern Bloc countries like Poland and Hungary, it caused a chain reaction that resulted in the demise of the wall. The Germans was also inspired by the nonviolent revolution that took place in the Philippines in February 1986.

Next stop was Frankfurt, Germany. On our way out of the Frankfurt International Airport.the Immigration and Customs police stopped us momentarily to ask us the reason and the number of days we are staying in this cultural and shopping metropolis, the home to the European Central Bank and Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

I wondered why? I figured out, it could have been our bulging luggage. By now, they are already full of souvenir items.

On our way to our Ramada Inn Hotel which was about 30 minutes away, our cab driver was like flying on the autobahn which is equivalent to U.S. our freeways.

I asked why? He quipped that in Germany, there’s no speed limit. That’s the reason why other daredevil drivers from other countries of Europe swing by in Germany to test their driving prowess in wild abandon.

Fashionable Frankfurt with gleaming skyscrapersand well-maintained old buildings,is a central German city on the banks of River Main. This fifth largest city in Germany has a populationof only 732,.688 in 2015 within its administrative boundaries.

Compared to major cities of the United States, I noticed that the population of Berlin and Frankfurt are not dense. Thetraffic was light and most of taxis are Mercedes Benzes. The people love to drink beer and like to smoke. I see cigarette butts on the sidewalks.

What I’m impressed about Germany is their love for trees or forest-like landscape. Surrounding the Ramada Inn where we were billeted in suburban Frankfurt were trees as the eye can see.

After visiting Frankfurt, we went back to Berlin for an overnight stay on our way to Los Angeles. Goodbye Berlin and Frankfurt. So long Germany. You had rich but tumultuous history. It was a pleasure learning about your storied past and present grandeur. – denino1951@gmail.com

DAN E. NINO ELECTED AS TOASTMASTER PRESIDENT Cerritos, California - Dan E. Nino who is playfully described whenever he is introduced to speak as “Jack of All Trades but Master of None, a tax consultant by occupation, a journalist by vocation, a community leader by avocation, a student activist by temperament and a musician by frustration,” was recently elected as president of Eclectic Dialectics No. 3828 Toastmasters Club based in the City of Cerritos.

Nino has been a Toastmasters Club member for the past 15 years and occupied several positions in the club including Vice President for Public Relations, Secretary and Area E Governor.

He also won his club’s International Speech Contest early this year and represented Eclectic Dialectics TM Club in the Area E Speech Contest where he was first runner-up. In his winning speech,”My Abiding Faith In America”, he shared his optimism that despite the toxic, corrosive, divisive politics and domestic problems in his adopted country,the U.S. is still an exceptional country for immigrants.

He revealed in his speech, “Whenever I watch the display of fireworks every fourth of July that zoomed into the sky with patriotic songs blaring in the background, tears of joy stream down my cheeks because America had welcomed me, nurtured me, sheltered me, nourished me, cradled me and transformed me for whatever I am today with the blessings I enjoy.”

“America is still the greatest superpower and richest nation on earth. America is the last bastion of liberty and the last frontier of economic opportunity where an American Dream can be possible.

My friends, America doesn’t stop being great,” he said.

An active community leader, Mr. Nino was past president of Association of Mangatarem Overseas Residents (AMOR) of Southern California, Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA, Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles and FilipinoAmerican Press Club of Los Angeles. He was educated at Centro Escolar University, Ateneo de Manila University and Cerritos College.
