APOGLA GOLF TOURN OURNAMENT AMENT 2022 Latest Golfing Round-Up and Tiger Tony Golf Academy (TTGA) Celebrates Its 1st Year Anniversary

By Bro. Eric Serrano It was a day that the Golfing Gods smiled favorably on a group of Golfing Afficionados assembled at the Los Serranos Country Club South Course in Chino Hills. Southern California was in the midst of a week-long heat wave reaching triple digits in most areas. However, on July 23, Saturday, the maximum temperatures were forecast to be in the mid-80s and low 90s. It was around mid-day (1:30 PM) when the golfers teed off at the South Course for the APO GLA Invitational Golf Tournament in cooperation with APO Golf Club USA in beautiful 85 degree weather. There were a total of 72 players, which included retired military men from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), members of the Rotary Club and the LA Financial (LAF) group of Bro. Oca Atienza. It was a double shotgun format organized by APO GLA Golf Committee Chairmen, Bro. Ruel Umandal and Sis Melody Ang-Gayon. There were a lot of prizes in cash and kind, the biggest prize was a brand new car (Nissan Sentra) for a Hole-In-One donated by Bro. Bojji Manny Martinez/ Frank Pestano of Nissan of Downtown LA. Unfortunately, no one was able to win the big prize, but there were also cash prizes for the “Closest to the Pin” on 2 Par-3 holes.

PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE Greetings APOGLA, Yes! We made it to the halfway mark of this administration. We are not slowing down. We have more activities ahead of us.

Let me summarize to you what took place lately: June 11 we had our annual blood drive at the Holiday Inn, West Covina, organized by Sis Jen thru the Cedar- Sinai Blood mobile with Bro. Ed Tecson. Although we came short of our target of 30 donors, it is a great service to the much needed supply to the blood bank.

Our June GMM was well attended. We have more physical attendees. It was memorable to me, I celebrated my 60th birthday with APOGLA family, my daughters and their family, my relatives and friends. Thank you for celebrating my milestone with me.

During the GMM, Fundraising Chairman Bro. Geoffrey Arroyo distributed the raffle tickets. This is our major fundraising of the year. If you haven’t received raffle tickets yet, please contact the co-chair, Sis Malou Fajardo or Sis Liza Valera or they contact you.

June 25, APOGLA co-sponsored with Alpha Phi Omega Philippines, Inc. Committee’s National Service for Health (APO-NSH) in celebration of National Kidney Month. There was a Seminar / Webinar on “SAKIT sa BATO, ALAMIN mo” Kidneys in Health and Disease, which discussed factors to prevent damage to kidneys which usually lead to dialysis and kidney transplant procedure. Sharing of experiences of a kidney transplant donor and recipient patient. The psychological factors that affect both were also be discussed.

On 4th of July , we had our Independence Day Picnic in Zuma Beach Malibu. It was time to relax and enjoy the sea breeze and get away from Inland and Valley’s hot weather.

We had our other major fundraising last weekend. It was a very successful fundraising for GLA and a fun day for the golfers.

There will be music, dancing, a lot of food and drinks for everyone. See you there on Saturday.

The symposium is rescheduled for August. We will have it at the same GMM venue and before the GMM. Bro. Eric Serrano calls it Medicare 101. A Medicare expert will discuss basic information and how we can maximize its benefits.

And I don’t need to remind you as Bro. Francis is constantly reminding us, that the ACNA fall meeting is hosted

by APOAASD on the Labor day weekend.

So again, mark your calendar and support our activities for the benefit of the community and ourselves.

A HANDSHAKE

By Brother Toti Ayo We all know what a handshake is. Mirriam-Webster defines it as a clasping usually of right hands by two people (as in greeting or farewell). Dictionary.com defines it as a gripping and shaking of right hands by two individuals, as to symbolize greeting, congratulation, agreement, or farewell.

In many cultures, it is a common practice to greet someone with a handshake. But in other countries, different cultures have their own way or gesture to observe basically the same intent. In fact, when the pandemic hit, we all saw the changes that were practiced in lieu of a handshake.

No different is our way of shaking hands - the Philippine Alpha Phi Omega, at least - where we kept the Scouting tradition in the use of our left hand to shake hands as our expression or respect and trust among us.

In general, regardless of your looks, a handshake delivers a message and it can create a lasting impression. We can always find ‘tips’ on delivering a good and personable handshake. Nevertheless, a handshake is supposed to be a ‘covenant’, a commitment of respect for a ‘relationship’. At that very moment that one shakes hand with another person, take note of the difference it makes when you look a person in the eye. It expresses confidence as you make a comfortable grip at the same time. As we often practice the use of our handshake, notice the difference. If you don’t notice the difference, the other person does.

Now, moving on, how about if we talk about our General Membership Meetings. What about our GMMs? All through these years, except during the pandemic of course, APOGLA has conducted its general membership meetings on a regular monthly basis - scheduled on the 3rd Saturday of every month. We find that in our bylaws. Although there are some exceptions, where an advance notice is given by the president as necessary - such as this month when our GMM is scheduled on July 30th. Having no permanent address where we conduct our GMMs, we appreciate every member’s offer to ‘host’ a membership meeting. We are ‘nomads’ as far as venues for our GMMs. That said, you will see how the spirit of fraternal brotherhood works. As they say: It works wonders!

Time unfolds and changes happen along the way. Our journey was not always easy. But we adapt. We grow. We mature. We become. It’s a feast and it’s always a celebration during our GMMs. It was fun doing potluck to feed ourselves during these meetings. Yes. Potluck used to be the name of the game. We still do, in almost every function (which is a cultural thing too), and certainly, they are much appreciated. But for some years now, we have subsidized our food from our coffers.

Consider, however, that the fun and the camaraderie that these monthly gatherings create, is something that we cannot take for granted.

It strengthens our muscles. It makes us strong. It nourishes our soul as it takes us away from the ‘rat race’, so to speak. At the same time, as I always say, GLA is a place where you find friends for a lifetime. These GMMs, not the meetings per se, but the fellowship that follows, make us the GLA that we are.

Hence, we should be aware that we all share the responsibility in making things work and keeping our inter-personal relationships healthy. If I should add, not so much for ourselves, but for our family - our spouses and our children as well. For one thing sure, it must be noted that through the years, we have been blessed with quality men and women of Alpha Phi Omega who remain steadfast in their commitment to work and witness a continued growth of APOGLA. Discipline, understanding, tolerance, and respect are a few basic values we consistently adhere to and as such, we want to prevail in our Association. We are committed to stand the test of time. We are a dynamic organization, and we are responsive to the signs of the times.

All these being said, we expect everyone, as always we do, to generate and create new ideas that will add value to our organization. As always, APOGLA wants to maintain a trustworthy organization. As always, we look forward to maintain a good number of dues-paying members in our roster. We know, it can only happen if we trust our organization - especially our leadership.

On a more personal note, the fact is, I miss quite a few of our comrades who are now gone before us. They were dear to my heart and to the hearts of many. Some of them we grew up with as we built on the foundation of our beloved APOGLA. We remember. We celebrate. We believe.

Further, this July makes it more special as I look forward to my 6th grandchild coming anytime soon. May Patrick and Kim, as parents, be ever blessed. I should also take this opportunity and give our prayerful best wishes for a healthy baby for Christopher and Val, as they expect their first born comes December this year.

Finally, as we move on along, it is always our wish to make the most of our time in our gatherings. We urge everyone to be an active participant in our growth.

APOGLA Golf Tour nament 2022 ournament Continued from page 1 The day’s winners on the Women’s side were Ms. Chona Dullas, Runner-up and Ms Donna Apostol, ruling as the Women’s Champion. Class C Runner-up honors went to our very own Bro. Jimmy “Magwho” Magsino, with guest golfer Danny Nguyen winning Class C honors. Runner-up in the Class B group went to Bro. Robert Merilo and the Champion was Bro. Manny Martinez. Runner-up honors for Class A went to guest golfer Paul Alvarado and Class A Champion went to another guest golfer Ferdie Sierra. Not everything was a loss for our APO Golfers. The Overall Low Net Champion Trophy went to our very own and perennial winner, Bro. Nards Castillo.

The next APO USA Golf Tournament will be on August 21, 2022 set at the beautiful La Mirada Golf Course and in September, APO Alumni Association of San Diego will be hosting the ACNA (Alumni Council of North America) Fall Meeting with a 2-day Golfing Tournament, along with the much ballyhooed APO North versus South Ryder Cup. We’ll see you all on the golf course, mga kAPOtid and don’t forget, “Keep on Hitting”.

In a few days, we will have reached the month of August and this is a very special month for all of the members of the Tiger Tony Golf Academy (TTGA). It was around the birthday of Bro. Tony Gomez, in early August last year, when he started teaching the fundamentals of the game to an excited group of APO GLA “golf newbies”, yours truly included. Bro Tony G. or as we all fondly call him, “Tiger Tony”, is the inspiration behind TTGA. A big reason to celebrate this milestone is because many of its students have begun to stamp their mark/s in the ongoing APO Golf Club USA monthly tournaments.

After learning the rudiments of the game, several TTGA “alums” have become members of the APO Golf Club USA and have won in their respective classes during the monthly tournaments: Bro. President Roehl Reyes won as the Class C Champion in December, 2021, Bro. Art “Lakay” Rivera won Class C honors in February, 2022 followed by Sis Melody Ang-Gayon 2 months later and the latest Class C Champion was Bro. VP Roland Paras in June.

While most of the TTGA graduates are strutting their wares in the monthly APO golf tournaments, there were some students who deferred in pursuing the weekly instructions because of medical and personal reasons. But for those who are planning to join the group, and we do strongly encourage everyone who can swing a golf club to give it a try, we regularly meet once a week on Saturday mornings at the Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills. This is a great activity for those contemplating Retirement, or even those who just want to learn the game.

A Blessed and Advanced Happy 1st Anniversary to all my KLASMEYTS… FORE…!!!

Philippine American Friendship Day: The Talk of the Town Cerritos, Calif. – It was the talk of the town. Astounding. Astonishing. Festive. Well-organized.

Very successful. And many more positive feedback and comments were heard from the community in the aftermath of the Philippine American Friendship Day celebration hosted by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) Greater Los Angeles at the picturesque and well-manicured Don Knabe Community Regional Park by the lake on July 9 in this city.

This year’s celebration theme, “Together We Rise. The Time Is Now”, is a fitting tribute to the accomplishments of every day Filipino Americans who have made California their home and who have realized their American Dream. After all, NaFFAA’s core values are civic engagement, leadership development, economic empowerment as well as other national advocacies.

Los Angeles County alone has an estimated 500,000 Filipino-Americans. Attendees came from as far as San Diego, Temecula and Palmdale, not to mention Orange County.

Entertainers with diverse specialties and genres wowed the crowd estimated at 3,000 that included vendors, customers, entertainers, members from non-profit organizations and fans. They descended on this city named Tree City USA and known for its well-planned landscape, an award-winning library and the Center for the Performing Arts Center and for its rich ethnic diversity.

Musical, dance entertainment and cultural presentations had wide range of coverage like pop, standard, patriotic, Broadway, Opera, ballads, R&B, rock, folk rock, disco, danceable music from the 1980s to the 2020s and what have you. Cultural dances like Tinikling and Bulaklakin performed by Club Magkaisa of Cerritos High School brought nostalgia and moist to the eyes of the throng.

Early arrivals to provide security and parking assistance to VIPs and entertainers and parade goers were the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Associations of APOGLA and APO South Bay who served as volunteers. They were the eyes and ears for suspicious characters who might disrupt the festive ambiance of this Los Angeles County’s Largest Philippine American Friendship held in this gateway region.

And of course the 65 booth vendors of businesses and non-profit organizations who had to set-up their wares and parade goers were excited to participate around “ the refreshing lake with sparkling fountain and murmuring mini gorge.

Among the novelties that enlivened the huge crowd were the five mounted sheriffs courtesy of County Advisory Council (CAC) and flyover helicopter under the jurisdiction of L.A. Sheriff Alex Villanueva. And the surprise appearance of a dozen of Miss PhilippinesUSA beauty contestants.

The day’s program was opened with the singing of the United States and Philippine national anthems by child prodigy Ardyanna, followed by the invocation of Pastor Ren Sabio of Temecula. This was immediately followed by welcome remarks of NaFFAA Board Chair and President Noel S.V. Omega and the symbolic banging of the gong three times by this author who also served as overall event chair.

City of Cerritos Mayor Chuong Vo formally welcomed the huge crowd, followed by two elected Cerritos Fil-Am Councilmembers Lynda Johnson and Frank Aurelio Yokoyama. Thereafter, Mayor Vo presented NaFFAA organizers a scroll of proclamation and commendation. The Vietnamese-American Mayor even bought a resplendent Barong Tagalog that fit him well.

Among those elected Filipino-American and mainstream officials who presented scrolls of proclamations and commendations and delivered inspiring messages include Artesia Mayor Melissa Ramoso, Lakewood Mayor Pro Tem Ariel Pe, Sierra Madre Councilmember Rachelle Arizmendi, former Carson Mayor and current Councilmember Jim Dear on behalf of Mayor Lula DavisHolmes and County Supervisor Janice Hahn.

The keynote speech was delivered by 4th District L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn, the lead sponsor of this historic milestone.

She exhorted the large audience from all walks of life to be on guard. She recalled an incident of hate crime against Asians wherein FilAm Cesar Echano was physically assaulted at the park without provocation and said, “you do not belong here”. As a result, she organized “Stop The Asian Hate” rally in 2021. She emphasized, “The Filipino-American residents made our county and country stronger. And today with this friendship festival, we are celebrating you. It is appropriate that we hold this ‘Friendship Day’ here in this same park, where everyone is welcome, everyone can feel safe and everyone can take part in their community.”

Inspiring and uplifting messages were also delivered by Philippine Deputy Consul General Ambrosio Bryan F. Enciso, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, Jessica Caloza, the Deputy Chief of Staff to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, California Treasurer Fiona Ma, and Bellflower Councilmember Victor Sanchez, representing Mayor Pro Tem Sonny Santa Ines. He also handed a scroll. Mayor Pro Tem Sonny Santa Ines and Carson Councilmember Arleen B. Rojas were scheduled to attend but couldn’t make it for personal reasons beyond their control.

U.S. Congresswoman Michelle Steele also showed up to say hello to her constituents but left for another appointment.

As a side event; economic summit, immigration and music workshops were conducted inside the gym.

Among the entertainers include: Zumba Dancers of courtesy of Nonie Belarmino, Dance Exhibition of the Iligan/Lanao Del Norte Group, FASO, Sara Mislang, Hollywood Dance Moms, Lyndon Apostol, Kangoo Dance Fitness, Emeben Baysic, Jay Auditor, Ancestral Dance Movement, Felson Palad, Synergy Rising Kids Stars, Ventriloquist Shane Seloria, Garth Garcia, Cerritos High School’s Club Magkaisa Folk Dancers, Filipino Cultural School Rondalla Ensemble, TFC Hour featuring Kiana Valenciano and Robin Nievera.

The finale was performed by Playback Jukebox led by Paco Arespacochaga, former drummer of Manila-based Introvoys Band.

Foremost among them is the July 4th celebration of Independence Day. July 2 is Eil Al Adha, a Muslim holiday. We also have the “Super Buck Moon”, July 13. It’s so called because the antlers of the buck reach their peak growth this time of the year. July 5 is Workaholic Day while July 6 is International Kissing Day. ***************************** We did it again! Once more we have shown our keen desire to serve by helping out in the recent celebration of Philippine American Friendship Day held last July 9 at the Don Knabe Lake.

Our volunteer Brothers and Sisters took charge of the valet services and other duties to keep order in the place. They also assisted in the colorful parade. There were live performances, non-stop entertainment and cultural presentations. There were also food vendors, workshops and product booths. We are proud that our very own PP Brod Dan Nino was the Over-all Chairman, the “Hermano Mayor”, and the Grand Marshall of this big affair! Well done Brod Dan! And this goes true for all those who volunteered led by our Prez Brod Roehl Reyes. ***************************** We tip our hats too for the splendid outcome of the Golf Tournament led by Sis Melody AngGayon and Brod Ruel Umandal. This goes true also for all those who helped in making the tournament a big success. The tournament held at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills last July 23, is our first fund raising activity for this year.
