In times of Covid-19 pandemic, brothers and sisters from APOGLA still find ways to get together and explore the outdoors

We Shall Overcome

Oh, Covid, when are you going back to wherever you came from? We won’t forget you long after you leave. Countless memories you will have left behind when you’re gone. Lots of experiences will be shared. Volumes of stories will be left untold.

Our APOGLA will have its share of these experiences and stories to tell, personal or otherwise.

Just like everyone else around the world, we want to hopefully, at least, feel free to gather sometime soon. Ok, we shall wear masks, we shall observe physical distancing, but we shall commit to socially connect.

When will that be, we don’t know. In the meantime, we’ll meet in Zoom and/or some other media outlet- one of which will happen this Saturday, 18th of July at 4:00 pm.

Thanks to our Leadership.

This pandemic has reminded us that we’re all in this together, that life is fragile and the future unknown. It’s full of dangers, sure, but also full of possibilities. Locked in our homes (again), it’s time to look out and up to the stars to seek out a different perspective. Although we know too well that life is short, there’s still a long life ahead of us - maybe not so much in the number of years, but in the moments we shall celebrate.

Howdy everyone! I hope that everyone is well, safe and sound!

People are getting tired of staying at home. Everybody wants to go out, like the Santa Clarita Boys they have Saturday Walking Stint, The Inland Empire Gang have the 1738 Night Out, and the LA & San Fernando Team have the Enuman.

Even with the Covid crisis the Administration had been busy attending meetings like the APOGLA BOD 2020 Meeting. We are goimg to have our July GMM this Saturday 18th of July 2020, and on the 25th of July will be attending ACNA BOD Meeting.

The Crisis will not last but APOGLA will survive forever!

Brothers and Sisters just as always stay safe, always wash your hands, always wear mask in public, and always adhere to social distancing procedure!

Again, Saturday July 18, 2020 at 4:00pm will be our GMM. See you all!

It’s been a long time now since our first lockdown. May we find these times, moments of transformation, hoping for new and refreshed perspectives. Hoping that in our small little ways, that we can bring back to APOGLA something new, something different in our inner passions and desires. Let us endlessly transform and continue to create a culture of openness, respect, understanding, and tolerance that we want to be. These and more will assure us of our members’ trust, confidence, and commitment in the years to come. This is OUR APOGLA. Denis Waitley, writer and motivational speaker said: “If you’re really committed to peak performance and leadership, you must motivate yourself from within. Studies of achievers show that inner drives for excellence and independence are far more powerful than the desire for wealth, status, or recognition.”

In light of this pandemic and the events of our lives, however we are or have been affected by it, may we continue to grow deeper in understanding, tolerance, forgiveness and love. May we continue to learn to adapt to the reality of insecurity and uncertainty as we move on along with our lives and our families.

By Bro. Dan E. Nino In this July 2020 issue of TNB, I’ll digress a little bit in my op-ed. Instead, I’ll publish here our APOPGLA C-3’s proposed Memorandum of Agreement with APOGLA’s C-7 which was discussed at length last July 11 between the Board members of both our non-profit organizations. In summary, C-3’s proposal is to appoint the former as the C-7’s fund-raising arm for its service projects and programs like the Scholarship for APO Kids, Medical Mission in the Philippines, etc. so your donations can be taxdeductible to the full extent as allowed by our tax laws. Please keep an open mind.

MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT (M O A) This MOA is entered into by and between Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) of Greater Los Angeles (APOPGLA), Inc., a code 501C3 entity (hereinafter referred to as C3) and Alpha Phi Omega of Greater Los Angeles (APOGLA), code 501C7 fraternal organization (later referred to as C7).

This agreement shall be effective as set out below on section 1.

RECITALS: A. APOPGLA, Inc. has an IRS determination letter qualification under Section 501(C)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. (FEIN No. 95-4640511). Its mission is to foster the tenets of Leadership, Friendship and Service amongst the Youth and the disadvantaged in pursuit of a better tomorrow.

B. APOGLA, a California State Social non-profit corporation (FEIN No. 81-0883037) as of May 2016,, does not have an IRS determination letter of qualification under Section 501(C)3 of the code. It’s mission, service objectives and charitable purposes are synonymous and parallel with APOPGLA, Inc. C. APOGLA and APOPGLA, Inc, have a long history of collaboration and in fact, way back before the issuance of APOGLA’s 501C7 in May 2016, they were a single entity operating as a tax exempt 501C3. The 501C7 was conceived by a good majority of the members, so concentration on the social aspect of the brethren can be better achieved and one fact remains that there is commonality of membership. The tie and bonding are so strong, therefore, serving as the impetus for the C3 part to continually care and look for the welfare of the C7 at every opportunity.

D. APOPGLA, Inc’s board of directors has determined that APOGLA’s program furthers APOPGLA, Inc’s charitable goals and tax-exempt purposes. APOPGLA, Inc. in an effort to forge a formal alliance, the entity’s desire is to enter into an MOA for Fund Raising and Collection management with APOGLA. E.

Reciprocally, APOGLA’s BOD has agreed into entering the above MOA with APOPGLA, Inc.

F. For the purpose of organizational functionality, APOGLA shall treat APOPGLA, Inc. as an “autonomous” committee, whose sole purpose is fund raising and collection for APOGLA. Autonomous operation connotes the following: 1. As an Independent corporate operations, the 501-C7 is a social club and the 501-C3 is a non-profit public benefit and charitable organization. As such, there must be no jurisdiction overlap, most specially on the tax-exempt nonprofit aspect, as mandated by the 501C3 code of the IRS. 2. Each entity shall maintain and execute its own fiscal affairs according to generally accepted accounting principles, standards and practices. All transactions between the two entities shall be covered in their respective books by legitimate audit traceable records.

3. Subject for review: Should it become necessary in compliance of the 501-C3 code, APOPGLA, Inc. and its representatives shall be given access to the books/records of APOGLA, as APOPGLA, Inc. may reasonably request. This is all about ensuring that all non-profit tax exempt regulatory requirements are conformed with.

G. Administrative charge: APOPGLA, Inc. shall retain a reasonable administrative charge to cover the cost associated with its solicitation and collection management associated with this agreement (shall be negotiated from time to time).

Incidental service charges, over and above the admin fee, may also apply with payment options chosen by the donor, i.e. wire transfers, PayPal, etc.

An administrative fee of 10 percent is imposed based on the following: 1. Funds raised from exclusive C7 members summarily go to APOGLA coffers.

2. Funds raised from both C3-C7 members shall be left to the option of the APOPGLA member whether to retain the 10% admin fee or not.

3. Funds raised from outside sources including those referred by C7 members shall be subject to the administrative fee.

H. Joint C3 - C7 projects, especially and particularly those funded by C3 can be used for APOPGLA Inc.’s documentation and funding solicitation purposes.

I. This MOA is contingent upon a “No Conflict of Interest (No COI) Policy”, and should this policy be subjected to probable jeopardy as mutually or individually sensed and determined by either or both parties, can result in the MOA termination; a joint arbitration by both the entities’ BODs shall determine the proper and appropriate adjudication of the COI. J.

NOTICES: All notices or reports under this agreement shall be addressed as follows: If to APOPGLA, Inc. -: The Chairman of the Board, APOPGLA, Inc. If to APOGLA -: The President of APOGLA.

NOW, THEREFORE, the parties hereby agree as follows: A. Effective Date: This agreement shall become effective immediately upon signing by the parties’ authorized officers.

B. Duration of the agreement – This MOA shall continue to be in effect until either entity advises the other in writing of its desire to terminate with a 30 day advance notice (commencing on date of receipt).

When Will We Travel Again?

Many of us love to travel, enjoy a cruise, take a trip or drive to beautiful destinations but all of these have been turned upside down with the advent of Covid 19. Our September Florida Convention was postponed and other trips have been canceled, leaving all of us at home. Travel has been limited to walks around the neighborhood or a trip around the globe via YouTube! Since the Stay at Home orders, we have seen so many lovely and exotic places including Thailand, Vietnam, and places in the Philippines including Cebu, Bohol, Palawan, Marawi, Iligan, Baler, Vigan, Laoag, Batanes, Sagada, Banaue and of course, Baguio! Many have also turned into watching cooking lessons from various recipes of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. We invite you to do the same and explore places we want to visit in the future and taste foods that we want to indulge in when the time comes.

It is sure an interesting, wonderful and exciting learning experience and only a remote control away!

Trail Hiking APOGLA members cannot be locked down, so some have escaped to their favorite golf course to play a round of 18 or simply find a hiking trail and walk to exercise the body and the mind. Jun Linsangan, Bobet Lara and Beeboy Mansilla started “Saturday Morning Walks” along the trails and hills of Santa Clarita. The threesome became foursome when Jo Peneza drove one Saturday from the South Bay to join the hike. Then July 12, the setting was moved to scenic Rancho Palos Verdes and the Terranea Resort next to the Pacific Ocean. The number swelled to eight with the addition of Troy Agagon, Cory Alcantara, Marisol Roberto and yours truly. It was a refreshing and invigorating experience as we trekked about 7 miles along the slopes down to the beach, smell the wild flowers, feel the ocean breeze and snacked on Skyflakes crackers, candies and water. Mary Anne and Jo Peneza graciously hosted lunch at their home which included Laing, Sinigang na Baboy, BBQ Pork Ribs, Basmati Rice and Beeboy’s Fresh Rock Crabs. Of course, one cannot do away without the Remy Martin 1738. We left Santa Clarita at about 8:00 AM and departed South Bay at almost 5:00 PM, surely it was indeed a full, fun and unforgettable day of leisure and cool way to escape the heat wave of the Valleys. Next time, come join the Walk.

The Luzon Earthquake 1990 “The 1990 Luzon earthquake struck the island of Luzon in the Philippines at 4:26 p.m. on July 16 (PDT). 3:26 p.m. (PST) with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) and produced a 125 km-long ground rupture that stretched from Dingalan, Aurora to Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija. The event was a result of strike-slip movements along the Philippine Fault and the Digdig Fault within the Philippine Fault System. The earthquake’s epicenter was near the town of Rizal, Nueva Ecija, northeast of Cabanatuan City.An estimated 1,621 people were killed,most of the fatalities located in Central Luzon and the Cordillera Region.

The earthquake caused damage within an area of about 20,000 square kilometers, stretching from the mountains of the Cordillera Administrative Region and through the Central Luzon region. The earthquake was strongly felt in Metropolitan Manila, destroying many buildings and leading to panic and stampedes and ultimately three deaths in the National Capital Region,one of the lowest fatalities recorded in the wake of the tremor. The Southern Tagalog (nowadays Regions 4A and 4B) and Bicol Regions also felt the quake, but with low casualty figures.” Wikipedia

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo Hello there Brothers and Sisters! This month fills the air with the loud bang and the sound of fireworks for we celebrate the Fourth of July! It will be quite different this year because of this pandemic but hey! There’s always a first time right?

There are other interesting things to celebrate this month: July 6 is International Kissing day (oh! la! la!), July 2 is World UFO Day; July 11 is World Population Day, July 14 is National Nude Day and July 21 is National Lasagna Day. We also greet all our Brothers and Sisters celebrating their birthdays this month . . . Happy Birthday!

Another year older and you just keep getting older, wiser, funnier and more amazing!

Those born during June 20 to July 22 fall under the zodiac sign of the crab.....Cancer. They are loyal, intuitive, caring, overly sensitive, moody, and vindictive. ********************************** Since we have not had any GMM meetings where we’re present physically and have not been able to celebrate the birthdays of the monthly celebrants for the past few months, I suggested to the President and other officers for us to have one big party when we are able to . This will enable us to make up for lost time.

Don’t you think so? But first of all, we all have to pray that this whole pandemic would soon be over! ********************************** This month and the next few months, some heavenly phenomena are taking place. Our old folks used to warn us of such events as a foreboding of not-so-pleasant happenings for us to watch out for. Call it superstitious or whatever but I think they’re worthy of our observation.

On July 22, the comet Neowise will pass within 65 million miles of the Earth before heading once more for the far reaches of the solar system on a roughly 6,800 year orbit. The comet has grown brighter in recent days and will make its closest approach to Earth in about two weeks. It’s possible to see it in certain places at certain times.

This year too, the Blue Moon will come on October 31st this year. It will be called Blue Moon because it will be the 2nd full moon in a single calendar month.

On Nov. 30 this year too, North and South America will see the last penumbral eclipse of the year, including Asia, Australia and the Pacific Region. This eclipse is also known as the Blood Moon. This appears only twice in three years. Many Native American tribes say lunar eclipses are a sign of transformation to come here on Earth. The fact that a Blue Moon appeared on the very days our Lord was crucified is filled with meaning! The Bible tells us that the last days will be filled with signs from the heavens! Is this one of them? Maybe it’s about time we go down on our knees and pray. ********************************** Covid 19 has not dampened our spirit of camaraderie. We keep in touch with one another almost every day.

We keep tab of each other’s activity. We make sure we are aware of our Brothers and Sisters’ situation.
