Goodbye May, Hello to June! Welcome Summer 2020!

By Brod Art Rivera Goodbye to May and say Hello to June! After three months of lockdown and stay at home quarantine, we are now slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Welcome Summer of 2020!

Hanigrace Zara We are already reeling from the effects of the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic, then came the Black Lives Matter movement and again disrupted our lives. We lost friends and relatives from the pandemic and more lives were lost with the chaos, protests and disorders that beset the entire country. Several business establishments were victimized by looters and thieves and many lost their jobs, too. And now, we mourn, grieve and weep the passing of a beloved member of APO and APOGLA, Sister Hanigrace Zara Arciga of Chi Chapter. Everyone knows her as the friendly, welcoming, joyful, helpful and fun to be with in the circles of A-Phi-O, ACNA, service projects, GMMs, annual camping, social functions and Lucena City gatherings. She went home to the Philippines for a vacation and was caught in the Stay at Home orders due to Covid-19. She fell ill, was hospitalized, was soon diagnosed with the dreaded Cancer and sadly, she joined our Creator on June 15, 2020. We never did get to see her back in LA and we feel that she is still on vacation. She will be sorely missed but we take solace in the thought that she has gone home, no longer in pain and is up there with the angels and saints bringing joy to all the brethren who have gone ahead of us. Sister Grace, we are grateful to you for having touched our lives in your own special way. You left us too soon, rest in peace and stay forever happy in heaven, and please say hello to Brods Bonjie, Pungay, Doms and William. “Death leaves us pain that no one can heal, Love leaves us memories that no one can steal.”

Santa Clarita Valley Scholars We want to congratulate the Class of 2020 for their dedication, diligence and determination. While the graduates of this year experienced unusual, challenging and different events, yet they accomplished what they aimed for and celebrated in unique ways. To all you graduates, you deserve the loudest cheers and applause. I would like to personally thank the brothers and sisters who joined me in the Fund Campaign for 7 deserving high school graduates of Santa Clarita; including Melody Ang-Gayon, Eric Serrano, Armand Mendoza, Bobet Lara, Beeboy Mansilla, Bong Ansula, Rene Calvario, Sammy Garcia, Dony Rondilla, Jun Linsangan, Tony Amon, Rene Yenko, and Jun Madrigal. PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE Dear Everyone, I hope that when this message reaches you, you and your entire family safe and in good health. Up to now no vaccine or medication have formulated or discovered to help us with Virus Pandemic. Please Stay Safe and always adhere to the Social Distancing Procedure to protect everyone.

In the past few months and up to the present We (APOGLA) have done proved how sincere and caring the general membership are. We have shown the entire world that we stand with our principles, to be a leader, to be a friend, and to be of service!

The donations we have done, to mention again, for our fallen brother Bro William Chua, Via ACNA for the Needy members of APO Philippines because of the Covid Virus Pandemic, and currently for our late sister, Sis Eleanor Grace Zara, only show that We (APOGLA) is solid, acting as one, moving as one, and thinking as one.

Nino FROM Some Tips for Deducting Charitable Contributions In the light of Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) of Greater Los Angeles 501 C3’s reactivation, I’d like to provide some insights into the inner workings of our government’s — both federal and state—programs to mitigate the world’s systemic problems and relief efforts and at the same time can deduct our charitable donations to qualified organizations that may help lower our tax bills.

The Internal Revenue Service has put together the following tips to help ensure our contributions are tax write offs in our tax returns. I want to share these with you.

The IRS mandates that if our goal is a legitimate tax deduction, then we must donate to a qualified organization.

Also, we cannot deduct contributions made to specific individuals, political organizations and candidates.

If we contributed for relief efforts in a qualified disaster area including California wildfire or other natural calamities here and abroad, they are tax deductible.

If you received a benefit because of your contributions such as merchandise, tickets to a ball game or other goods and services, then you can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received.

Donations of stock or other non-cash property are usually valued at the fair market value of the property.

Clothing and household items must generally be in good used condition or better — to be tax deductible. Special rules apply to vehicle donations.

Fair market value is generally the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither having to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the relevant facts.

According to the IRS, regardless of the amount, to deduct a contribution of cash, check, or other monetary gift, you must maintain a bank record, payroll deduction records or a written communication from the organization containing the name of the organization, the date of the contribution and amount of the contribution.

To claim a deduction for contributions of cash or property equaling $250 or more, we must have a bank record, payroll deduction records or a written acknowledgment from the qualified organization showing the amount of the cash and a description of any property contributed, and whether the organization provided any goods or services in exchange for the gift. One document may satisfy both the written communication requirement for monetary gifts and the written acknowledgment requirement for all contributions of $250 or more. If your total deduction for all noncash contributions for the year is over $500, you must complete and attach IRS Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions, to your return.

Taxpayers donating an item or a group of similar items valued at more than $5,000 must also complete Section B of Form 8283, which generally requires an appraisal by a qualified appraiser.

Group Exemptions What is a group exemption letter?

The IRS also recognizes a group of organizations as tax-exempt if they are affiliated with a central organization.

This avoids the need for each of the organizations to apply for exemption individually. A group exemption letter has the same effect as an individual exemption letter except that it applies to more than one organization.

What is the reason for group exemptions?

Group exemptions are an administrative convenience for both the IRS and organizations with many affiliated organizations. Subordinates in a group exemption do not have to file, and the IRS does not have to process separate applications for exemption. Consequently, subordinates do not receive individual exemption letters.

What types of organizations can qualify for group exemptions?

Exempt organizations that have, or plan to have, related organizations that are very similar to each other may apply for a group exemption.

What are central and subordinate organizations?

Groups of organizations with group exemption letters have a “head” or main organization, referred to as a central organization. The central organization generally supervises or controls many chapters, called subordinate organizations. The subordinate organizations typically have similar structures, purposes and activities.

Example: X is a national, fraternal organization exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(8). X has several state and hundreds of local chapters that have nearly identical articles of incorporation, by-laws, purposes and activities. As the national organization, X is considered the central organization; the state and local chapters are subordinate organizations and are covered under X’s group exemption.

What criteria must organizations meet to be included in a group exemption?

To qualify for a group exemption, the central organization and its subordinates must have a defined relationship.

Subordinates must be affiliated with the central organization.

I have known Sis Grace as a very hardworking woman, a loving mother and a sweet person, though we are both from Lucena City, I met her here in Palm Springs in the year 2010 and learned she is an Alpha Phi Omegan Batch 79 Chi Chapter. She worked for a few years here in Palm Springs and we used to be together whenever we attend APO gatherings and Christmas Party. She’s a bubbly person and everybody surely enjoyed her company. She is very close to me and I treat her like a real sister.

It was really a shock for me to know that she was very ill, that was the day before I was scheduled to fly back to US. I visited her and I saw her in pain and suffering, but of course, there is nothing I can do except include her in my prayers and give her encouragement and support the way I can. The only words she told me were not to mention it to all the Brods and Sis, but when Brod Cesar, her brother called informing me that they took Sis Grace to the hospital because she doesn’t eat and cannot breathe, I asked Brod Cesar’s permission that I need to let our APO Brothers and Sisters know what is going on with Sis Grace. She wanted to keep it secret that is why I called the first two persons in my mind Brod Tony Amon and Brod Arnold Bejasa, and that’s the time everybody sent prayers and support to our beloved sister and I knew she felt the love of her Brods and Sisters in Alpha Phi Omega.

Rest in eternal peace SIS GRACE, you will be missed.

The Road Ahead While the country is on the verge of fully opening businesses, schools, worship areas, entertainment centers, sports events, travel, hotels, restaurants, hospitality institutions, we eagerly look ahead to normal life as we slowly emerge from the darkness that befell the world. However, the Health Experts have seen a spike in new cases of the coronavirus in more than 20 states after the slow re-opening towards normalcy. It would still be wise to exercise caution at the same time practice the guidelines set forth to us by the State, City and Health Officials. Be safe, be well, stay hopeful and stay positive.

ACN A Cor ner - Upda tes F CNA Corner Updates Frrom Council Meeting

The ACNA Council Meeting via Zoom was held last Saturday, June 13th from 12:30-7:30pm. Yes, it went on for seven hours. There were numerous Committee reports, Service Project reports, Raffle report, Treasurer’s report, President’s report, etc. Instead of giving all the details, I will distill the seven hours meeting into a five-minute read.

1.

ACNA Term of Office for executive officers has been extended to September 2021. The BOD’s decision is based on the provision on the CBL that election of officers takes place in the convention. Since the convention was postponed until next year, the extension of the term of office follows. The BOD appointed a Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to amend the CBL to add provisions for emergency situation such as this pandemic.

ACNA Raffle is still on track for the grand price drawing next year. The primary focus is to help AA’s raise funds, which is why half of the proceeds go to local AA’s. There are some AA’s that do not need assistance on their fund raising so they are purchasing the tickets at half price. The monthly drawing for consolation prizes will continue for paid tickets. There is also a promotional draw with prizes donated by ACNA officer for all tickets regardless if it is paid or not.

ACNA ID Project has been launched. This is a term-based fundraising project of ACNA to help the host of the upcoming convention to raise funds. The ID machine will be given to the upcoming host who will be responsible for the ID run. In turn, they will receive a big share of the ID fee. The ID is now LOCAL AA-centric instead of ACNA-centric. This means that the logo of the local AA will be prominently displayed on the ID together with the ACNA logo. The ID is primarily a commemorative ID that is NOT intended as a replacement or a substitute for the APOPhilippines ID. A verified national number issued by APO-Philippines is a prerequisite. The project encourages applicants to be duly credentialed first by APO-Philippines. Additional details and mechanics are included in this newsletter.

ACNA Awards mechanics and criteria have been distributed. Looking at these guidelines and criteria, APOGLA would be a top-contender for this award. All we need is someone who can chronicle all our events.

AN UPD ATE TO THE CO VID-19 P ANDEMIC UPDA COVID-19 PANDEMIC

PREVIEW As this article goes to print, we are now entering the seventh (7th) month of the SARS-Coronavirus 2 outbreak since it started in Wuhan, China and over four (4) months since a worldwide Pandemic was issued. The latest information shows that more than eight (8) million people have been affected worldwide and we have had more than 440,000 deaths. In the United States, we have more than 2.25 million people who have been confirmed to have been infected with over 120,000 deaths as well as close to 700,000 recoveries. In California, we now have more than 155,000 confirmed cases and more than 5,000 deaths associated with the virus. Older adults and people with severe underlying medical conditions, such as heart/ lung disease, obesity, diabetes and immuno-compromised individuals, are likely at a higher risk for developing more serious complications and even death from COVID-19 illness. Recently, however younger adults with ages ranging from 30-45 years of age have seen higher rate of coronavirus infections requiring hospitalizations. Recent studies have also shown a correlation between smoking/ vaping in increasing the risk of getting severe COVID-19 infections among the younger population. Even children are not exempt from acquiring the infection. A few months back, several cases of the “Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children” (MIS-C) associated with the COVID-19 were identified and were similar to Kawasaki disease, which affects children younger than 5 years old, causing inflammation (swelling and redness) in the blood vessels. Persistent fever (> than 38.0 C for > 24 hours) is one of the hallmarks common to all the infected children, including any one or more of the following: an elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), fibrinogen, procalcitonin, ferritin, elevated neutrophils, reduced lymphocytes and low albumin.

INCREASED TESTING AND HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS The symptoms associated with people with COVID-19 may range from very mild symptoms to severe illness. The symptoms typically appear between 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. These include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, a new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea/ vomiting and diarrhea. Emergency warning signs that require immediate medical attention include increasing shortness of breath, trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, inability to wake or stay awake, new onset of confusion and bluish lips or face. Morbidity and mortality will significantly increase without the appropriate medical intervention.

As different states ramp up testing to determine the extent of the infection, there are typically 2 kinds of tests available for COVID-19: viral tests and antibody tests. The City of Los Angeles has provided increased testing areas, including one in Dodgers Stadium, which allows testing even for asymptomatic patients.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized 2 viral tests that allow you to collect either a nasal swab or a saliva sample. If you test positive for COVID-19, you should know what protective steps to take if you are sick or are caring for someone. If you test negative for COVID-19, you were probably not infected at the time the sample was collected. This does not mean you will not get sick. The test result only means that you did not have COVID-19 at the time of testing.

The antibody test involves taking a blood sample to identify the presence of antibodies that indicate that a person had an immune response to COVID-19. A positive result to this antibody (IgG) indicates that you had a previous exposure and that your body has developed antibodies. The antibody test is used to detect a past COVID-19 infection, and is NOT to diagnose active infections. While it may normally take up to 14 days after the onset of symptoms for antibodies to be developed within the body, 91% of people develop such antibodies within the first 8-13 days. While the belief is that the presence of antibodies may provide immunity to future infections, it is still unknown how long immunity is conferred to these individuals. It is still important to consult with your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or a local hospital if you develop one or more of the symptoms mentioned earlier.

CURRENT TREATMENT – Most people who become ill with COVID-19 will be able to safely recover at home. No specific treatments for COVID-19 currently exist. Multiple clinical studies are currently underway in many countries all over the world to find a treatment that will be effective for treating the disease. Scientists around the world are working on potential treatments and vaccines. Several clinical studies involve using antiviral drugs, some of which are already in use against other illnesses, to treat people who already have COVID-19. Other pharmaceutical companies are working on vaccines that can be used to prevent the disease.

The use of the anti-malarial drug, CHLOROQUINE and HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE, in combination with the antibiotic, AZITHROMYCIN, have not proven to be effective in treating the acute or latent phase of the disease and most clinical trials have since been discontinued. One antiviral medication, REMDESEVIR, has shown promise in limiting the reproduction and spread of the virus by targeting an important enzyme that the virus needs to reproduce. In actual clinical studies, Remdesevir was found to accelerate the recovery of hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared compared to a placebo (an inert treatment or substance that has no known effect). Remdesevir was initially developed to treat the Ebola virus through the same mechanism of inhibiting the ability of the virus to reproduce and make copies of itself, thereby preventing the spread to other cells and other parts of the body.

Another antiviral medication, FAVIPIRAVIR, which is used by some countries to treat influenza have shown promise, as well. Initial reports from China suggest that it may work on COVID-19 have not been published as of today.

Another medication that is receiving considerable attention is the anti-inflammatory medication, IBUPROFEN, which has been touted to help ease the breathing difficulties associated with the illness.

And most recently, a fairly cheap medication, DEXAMETHASONE, a steroid, has been shown to produce significant relief for patients who need oxygen therapy or ventilation. Dexamethasone acts on the immune system to prevent massive inflammation in the lungs and the heart which have been responsible for severe respiratory problems in very ill patients. It has been shown in these clinical trials to have a 20% reduction in breathing difficulties for patients requiring oxygen and up to 30% recovery for patients requiring ventilators.

CONVALESCENT PLASMA – literally plasma from recovered patients – has also been used in some clinical trials in patients with severe or life-threatening COVID-19 infections. This treatment is still considered experimental.

ACTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS – As states continuously reopen and lifting stay-at-home orders and other restrictions on social and business activity, questions linger on the best way to curb the spread of COVID-19. Until a vaccine is developed to ultimately prevent COVID-19, everyone is still encouraged to follow local State and Federal health guidelines in order to prevent increasing the spread and potential uptick in coronavirus cases. Several states have already seen a dramatic increase of COVID-19 infections, including Arizona, Texas and Florida. A key part of managing the COVID-19 pandemic is to try to decrease the epidemic peak, known as “flattening the curve” through various measures seeking to reduce the rate of new infections by preventing the spread. Slowing the spread helps decrease the risk of health services and/or healthcare workers from being overwhelmed, allowing for better treatment of current cases and provides more time for a vaccine to be developed.

Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have continued to recommend the following preventative measures, namely a.

Proper Hand Hygiene - Wash hands with soap and warm water often and for at least 20 seconds b.

Social Distancing – Avoid contact with large groups or gatherings; staying at least 6 feet away from others; Travel restrictions; School and Workplace closures c.

Practice good respiratory hygiene – Cover mouth and nose with a tissue during any cough or sneeze or sneezing inside the elbow if no tissue is available followed by proper hand hygiene after any cough or sneeze d.

Avoid touching the face, eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands e.

Wearing a Face-Mask when out in public f.

To prevent transmission, the general public is recommended to stay home except to get medical care and avoid sharing personal household items g.

Currently ill and infected individuals should consult with their Primary Physician to possibly get evaluated and tested and subsequently hospitalized, if necessary Everyone must comply with the CDC recommendations to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease. Again, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. While we look forward to resuming doing the things that we normally used to do; up until a definitive cure is discovered, we will need to remain vigilant in order to protect ourselves, our friends and our family. MAY WE ALWAYS BE.

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo It’s half-way through the year and every day we should count our blessings!

I’m happy to greet you once more through our humble column, even though some events have not been particularly happy but we should roll on with the blow and move on for that is the only sane thing to do.

We are entering the third month of the lockdown and indeed, it is driving a lot of people crazy. But we have to follow regulations for it is the healthy thing to do. Hope springs eternal though, and we look forward to the glorious time when everything will go back to normal. (Sigh!). ******************** When we think of June, the June bride walking down the aisle all in white is what comes to our mind. There are, however, other celebrations that fall during the month. We have, of course, Fathers’ Day, Men’s health month, African-American Music Appreciation month, National Caribbean American Heritage month, Women’s Golf Month, Juneteenth and LGBT Pride month to name a few.

Those born between June 1 and 21 fall under the Zodiac sign Gemini. They are known to be optimistic, full of ideas, they go after the best, they have great intuition, and they love making friends.

So to all our brothers and sisters who were born this month, have a Happy Birthday! May your blessings multiply and good health and prosperity be yours now and forever! ******************** Almost all of us are saddened by the passing of our beloved Sis Grace Zara. The sad event shocked us for she was so full of life, so full of fun! How can we forget her giggles, her laughter so infectious? Yes, Sis Grace , you will for-ever be in our hearts!

Let me share with you a tid-bit about Sis Grace when we worked together to take care of a patient, a certain Mrs. James. I requested her to be my partner to take the night shift while I handled the day shift. During breaks, we would have so much fun and the favorite topic would be the fun time we have in APO. She was one Sis who lived and breathed APO. Her devotion to our Fraternity was unquestionable and I am sure you know that. Working with her also made me aware of her compassionate heart. This was evident in the way she took care of our patient.

I will miss her. And so will the rest of us. Adieu my sweet Sister, adieu! ******************** HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY to all our Brods! May the Lord bless you and guide you in the role given to you by Our Father in heaven. Being a father is a big responsibility - to provide, to lead, to take care, to protect, to teach an all around job God Himself has tasked all of you. A proof of this can be gleaned from the great Book itself, the Bible. Here are some quotes taken to prove the heavenly task that fall on the shoulders of Dads.
