The P er ris Lak e Camping Experience 2019 Per erris Lake By Sis. Grays Zara This years annual camping once again brought us to Lake Perris. Of the 120 members who pledged to attend the camping event only less than 100 packs made it. Together with my Co Chair, Sis. Liza Valera and assistance of Bro. William Chua, we made the preparation & purchased the necessary goods for the activities. Bro. William served as our driver of the Uhaul we rented. Inspite of the setback (forgetting the Uhaul keys) we were able to finish purchasing the needed goods, it was late when we arrived at the campsite. The participating members were already having fellowship, they assisted us in unloading the goods and we were questioned by the Rangers when were unloading the goods and camping equipments. The remaining participant members arrived the registration day. The assigned members in their respective committees did their duties of the day to day basis. There was a lot of rapport & camaraderie among members. Sis Daemma led the parlor games for the kids and adults. After the Anticipated mass officiated by Fr Fred Costales, a sumptuous dinner was served with the lechon as one of the main courses donated by Bro Benny Vitug. More fellowship continued with Karaoke singing, a farewell toast dedicated to Bro Doms Tunque who passed away recently. APO kids having their own campfire activity. The funny antics of Bro Mandy Javierto made the night lively until the wee hours of the morning. The next day was Zumba and Yoga time after breakfast led by Aleya Leila Reyes and Tara Grude. Hiking was also part of the morning

activities. More members arrived to attend the GMM and after the meeting toast song and then announced the next annual camping event will be hosted by the UP system with Bro Art Rivera as its chairperson. Only a few were left after GMM and while some members playing the bingo, the rest enjoyed the lechon donated by Bro Roland Paras. Sis Marisol won the black out card in the amount of $50.00. The Bingo games were hosted by the couple of Gie and incoming Camping Chairperson Bro Art Rivera. Inspite of the heavy rains at night, there were more merry making and drinking among the ff: Bro Art, Bro Lito, Sis Emma, Sis Melody, Bro Troy, Bro Tony G.Sis Hazel, Bro Jobee, Bro Domel, Sis Jen. Bro John Puruntong, Sis Daemma, Sis Bicbic, Sis Marisol , me and my co chair, Sis Liza and APO wives, Tita Ghie, Tita Ella and Sweet Caroline . Bro Art with the assistance of Bro Tony Gomez prepared breakfast on the last day. THE LAST MEN STANDING helped one another in cleaning the camping equipments after breakfast including the gathering of all the trashes accumulated during the camping, then loaded the camping equipments in the Uhaul truck. As a souvenir, picture taking was held before finally saying goodbye to each other. It was very enriching experience among the participating APO members that continuously strengthen the bond that unite us.. Thank you and see you all again next year.

BO ARD OF DIRECT BOARD DIRECTOR’S OR’S CORNER A Message on behalf of your Board of Directors The past couple of years, we have experienced and grieved the loss of some of our own. Latest is our beloved brother Domingo ‘Doms’ Tunque who left us on May 23, 2019 at the age of 68. Personally, Brother Doms was one of those who I grew up with trying to find our niche in Los Angeles. Passionate as he was in his membership with APOGLA, we can say he grew up in Southern California when Alpha Phi Omega Philippine Alumni members were only a few. He didn’t waver in his membership with us, no matter how rough the sailing was at times. It’s been over forty long years indeed and we can say, we travelled far together and the journey is a treasure. However long those years were, as ever, life is short. It is heartwarming however, to see the younger generation carry on the torch of APOGLA’s ‘eternal’ flame. Yes, only a matter of time. We believe. After all, there is no reason to doubt. There is only a reminder for the older folks, to give way. Yes, that, we hope, we have not failed in reminding and in encouraging the younger ones that indeed, your time has come. Every chance we have, we encourage you, as we hope to have inspired you to take on the leadership, year after year. When we have to, we encourage you to ‘shake the system’ every now and then. Be proactive, and keep up with the changing times. Our success will depend on our ability to adapt to these changes as we continue to grow and improve. Next year, 2020, five years after we created two distinct organizations, be willing to sit in a committee to review the changes we made and changes we find necessary to change thereafter. Yes, it takes time and patience. That’s why we want it to go thru a committee level to get it started. Let’s continue to be a reflective, dynamic, and progressive organization. Always, we want to be family oriented and work only on activities that really matters. Subsequently, when we have found comfort in the organization we treasure, The APOGLA, may we consider taking an active part in the bigger landscape of Alpha Phi Omega in North America. Find out how you can be a part in making the Alumni Council of North America, our bigger family. Be a witness to ACNA as it continues to unfold. How can ACNA be a more effective and relevant organization we can consider worth our active participation? Let us know where we stand on issues that affect our respective AAs and learn more. The more we learn, the better we understand, the more worthy our membership becomes. Continued on page 4

Board of Director’s Corner Continued from page 3

Sometime in the next few months, we shall once again seek who will navigate our ship the next year and the years to come. May we always be counted as a willing and able leader that we hope to recognize year after year. May we always work together to enhance a good working relationships essential to a healthy organization. A good leadership comes a good organization. Always, we encourage everyone to give their precious time to serve. Somehow, we’ll realize, it’s worth it after all. Lastly, but not the least, since it’s Fathers’ Day on Sunday, June 16, may I share with you from the words of Kahlil Gibran from his book, The Prophet, On Children:

FR OM MY POINT OF VIEW FROM By Bro. Dan E. Nino

Comparisons Between “S” Corporation and “C” Corporation In a person’s pursuit of a professional career or livelihood, he/she has a choice to earn a living as an employee or an entrepreneur or self-employed business owner. Some chose to be employed in a private corporation or government agencies to receive a consistent and stable flow of monthly salary. Others prefer being entrepreneurs so they can direct and control all aspects of day to day business operation. And as a business owner, you can either choose to operate as a sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, Limited Liability Company (LLC), Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) or as corporation. For tax treatment, the method of paying your taxes depends on your legal form of business. If you are an individual business owner, you must file IRS Federal Form (1040) wherein business expenses, gains and losses are reported in Schedule C. And pay your share of federal taxes called self-employment tax. In this conversation, I’ll dwell on the similarities of both “S” Corporation and “C” Corporation then describe later the differences between the two: A corporation is perceived as a more professional/legitimate entity than a sole proprietorship or general partnership. Generally, a corporation is audited less frequently than other types of business models. Owners of both type of corporations are not typically responsible for business debts and liabilities. Ownership is easily transferable through sale of stocks. When corporation owners incur a disabling illness or dies, the corporation does not cease to exist unless the shareholders or their heirs choose to cancel, dissolve or terminate the corporation. Additional capital can be raised by selling shares of stocks. A corporation can offer self-employment tax savings since owners who work for the business are classified as employees. Owners are called shareholders. In order to register a company as a corporation, Articles of Incorporation must be filed with the Secretary of State and the necessary filing fees paid. Upon incorporation, a corporation is also required to adopt bylaws, hold an initial meeting of directors and shareholders, and issue shares of stocks to owners. There is a caveat though. If you incorporate in California, there is an automatic corporate tax payable to Franchise Tax Board amounting to $800 a year whether you profited or not. Why choose an S corporation? S corporations that have elected this special tax status with the IRS provide the same limited liability to owners or shareholders like C corporations, meaning that owners typically are not personally responsible for business debt and liabilities. However, S corporations have passthrough taxation. S corps do not paytax at the business level. They file an informational tax return but business income/loss is reported on the owners’ personal tax returns, and any tax due is paid at the individual level. Forming an S corporation has several advantages. They include: 1. S corporation tax status avoids the “double-taxation” associatedwith C corporation and instead provides S corp owners with pass-through taxation benefits, meaning their income, business expenses and losses are reported on shareholders’ individual income tax return’s (Form 1040) Schedule C. And taxes are paid on those earnings at the individual tax rate. 2. Under IRS S corp, taxation rules, profits, losses and other pass through items are allocated based on each shareholder’s proportionate shares of stock. 3. Income and losses of S corps are passed through to shareholders, similar to the way income and losses of partnerships are passed through to partners. 4. S corps must still file corporate tax returns, but they do not pay taxes at the corporate level. The S corporation’s profits are passed-through to shareholders’ individual tax returns. S corporation ownership restrictions S corporation has limited number of shareholders of 100 or less. Shareholders must be US citizens or legal residents (cannot be non-resident aliens) and the corporation must be a domestic corporation. There can be only one class of stock. S corporations must make a timely filing of Form 2553 to link its special tax treatment (pass-through taxation) with the IRS. Why choose a C corporation? C corporation is the most common corporation type, but it isn’t always the top choice for small business owners. Starting a C corporation may also offer greater tax advantages because of an expanded ability to deduct employee benefits, which are most often used by growing businesses. Electing a C corporation typically provides a number of advantages. They include: 1. C corp can have an unlimited number of shareholders. It is more flexible than S corporations in terms of the number of shareholders. That is one reason why C corps are the business type of choice for venture capitalists when they provide funding to a business. Evidently, it’s the best choice for large companies with large numbers of shareholders, especially if they are publicly traded. 2. Owners take reasonable salaries. Salaries paid to owners of C Corporations, though taxable to them as salary, are deducted from C Corp profits for income tax purposes. 3. Owners are not automatically taxed on business earnings. In contrast to pass-through entities like S corporation or LLCs, earnings of a C corporation are not automatically taxed to the owners. They are taxed to shareholders if distributed as dividends. The C Corp pays tax on its income at C Corp tax rates. 4. C Corp could successfully retain earnings for reasonable business needs, if it complies with the accumulated earnings tax provisions, instead of distributing them to shareholders. 5. C Corp can offer self-employment tax savings, since owners who work for the business are classified as employees. 6. C Corp face the most extensive ongoing formalities of any business type. C Corporations must adopt and regularly update bylaws, hold and properly document annual meetings of directors and shareholders and more. 7. C Corp can choose when their fiscal year ends while an S Corporation’s fiscal year end must be December 31. -denino1951@gmail.com

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo Wow! Almost half of the year is gone and before we know it, it’s Christmas once again. How time flies really! Sigh! It’s now June ....the month for weddings. It is the month that brings us Fathers’ Day, Flag Day, summer can do the summer solstice. Those born from June 1 to June 20 fall under the Gemini zodiac sign. People born from June 21 to 30 identify with the Cancer sign. Those born under the Gemini sign are sociable, humorous and talkative. They also exhibit childlike traits and are cheerful and restless. They are very intelligent and are extremely inquisitive. Those born under the Cancer sign are emotional and sensitive , care deeply about matters of the family and their home. Cancer is sympathetic and attached to people they keep close. They are very loyal and are able to empathize with other people’s pain and suffering. So to all our brothers and Sisters born under the Zodiac signs Gemini and Cancer, here’s our warmest wishes for a a Happy Birthday and May all your wishes come true! ********************** And speaking of birthdays, Brod Roehl Reyes, celebrated his birthday in a rather unique way. He gathered all his loved ones and spent the weekend with them camping in Kern River and Lake Isabella. They had a grand time indeed and the bonding was great! May you have more happy birthdays to come Brod! ********************** I gathered from Brod Pio Torneros, current AÇAÍ president, that the recent Alpha Reunion in Laoag was a highly successful one. Alphans from batch 60s, 70s, 80s and onwards and even the 50s attended. The objectives were met and a promise of a better, cohesive and stronger Alpha Chapter was made. Some minor problems were ironed out. Those who attended the reunion were: Brod Tony and Sis Ophelia Amon, Sis Erna Villanueva, Brods Bennie Domingo, Jham Jamero, Waldy Carbonell, Danton Pajarillaga, Mel Villanueva, Atty. Cesar Posadas, Dr. Chonilo Ruiz, ACAA Pres. Warren Young, Edison Ramos, Sisters Marieson Tungpalan, ACAA PP Madel Kho and many others. A million thanks to Retired Judge Brod Tom Torneros who offered free accommodation to his lovely home to brothers and sisters who were not able to make hotel reservations in time. I heard the Brod Tom, who is Brod Pio Torneros’ cousin really rolled the red carpet for our Brods and Sisters in need of a place to stay. Yan ang tunay na APO right? ********************** We extend our congratulations to Sis Grace Zara and her partners in the Camping Committee for a job well done. All indications show that it was a huge success and that can only be obtained by sheer hard work and great coordination. For that, you deserve our wholehearted admiration. Mabuhay kayo Sisters!
