On May 15, 2021, 27 brothers, sisters and familial members were at the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve in the City of Gardena for our service to the community for the month of May. The Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve covers 13.6 acres and is the last intact remnant of the Dominguez Channel. The wetland was used by the Gabrielino Indians or Tongva Indians as a source of sustenance and as a waterway where they would travel in their canoes in order to trade with other Indian tribes. For approximately three hours, brothers, sisters and familial members labored and patiently removed invasive plant species and restored habitats for both flora and fauna at the preserve. Thankfully, the weather was cool and overcast. Hungry and tired members were re-energized by the scrumptious lunch prepared by Brother Bobet Peneza who generously opened his home and hosted our May GMM as well. Our lunch was made complete by the creamy and delectable Ginataang Monggo made by Bro Rene Maddela. Continued on page 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE In our own small way, we were able to help a lot of people in the Philippines last April. We supported two APO projects in our native country – the APO Telemedicine and the APO-Lipa Community Pantry. The APO Telemedicine provides free consultation for APO members who has mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms, and COVID-19 related cases. They also provide oxygen therapy, medicine, including antibiotics and supplements. The APO-Lipa Community Pantry is a service project that provides food to our kababayans who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and suffering economically. The APO-Lipa Community Pantry has now served thousands of individuals and inspired other APO Brothers and Sisters to support and help their project. Thank you very much, my APO-GLA Brothers and Sisters; you made a difference in someone’s life. Thank you also to the volunteers to the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve – Restoration Day. Let’s go and have fun while helping clean and restore the wetland preserve. We will be able to help improve water quality and provide wildlife habitat . We are going to Florida in September for the ACNA Convention. We have a total of 30 registered delegates, the most from any alumni associations at this time. We have 5 registered voting delegates, 5 non- voting delegates, 18 general attendees and 2 gala night only. We have booked a hotel suite for Friday night; thank you for the sponsors. Now, we have one place to gather together for one night of camaraderie with our Brothers and Sisters from all of North America. We also registered 4 delegates to the APO Philippines Virtual Special General Assembly that will now be held on May 30, 2021 instead of May 15, 2021. The general assembly will determine whether the APO Philippines National Biennial Convention can be moved from 2021 to next year (2022). Other than the 4 official delegates from each basic organization units, APO Brothers and Sisters who are Life Members can register and participate in the virtual general assembly. Together, We Can Make A Difference As an afterthought, it is with deep regret that under the current administration, our Memorandum of Agreement herein referred to as MOA between Alpha Phi Omega Greater Los Angeles (APOGLA C-7) and Alpha Phi Omega Philippines Greater Los Angeles (APOPGLA C-3) signed by Bro. Tony Amon and myself on July 31, 2020, was terminated on April 28, 2021. As we are aware of, the C-3 was incorporated on May 26, 1998 as a Public Benefit/Charitable non-profit organization. It is in line with our three cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship and Service that benefit both our communities in the U.S. and the Philippines and at the same time, donations to our C-3 are tax deductibles. The beneficiaries are the underprivileged, less fortunate and disadvantaged sectors of our society. And this was greatly manifested during the massive typhoon and flood in the Bicol Region managed by our APO brothers on the ground and Cagayan Valley in Northern Luzon overseen by a parish church. And with our fund-raising efforts from both APOGLA and from outside sources, we donated cash and relief goods to the affected areas including the Baguio-Benguet region. Our C-3 also donated cash and relief goods to the frontliners of the Philippine General Hospital who are working exclusively at Covic-19 wards. Before that, we held and sponsored two separate Humanitarian Service Projects benefiting 21 People With Disabilities (PWDs) mostly young children to mitigate their physical and mental disabilities, Balik-Aral donating school supplies and furniture, to name a few too numerous to print in this column. Our MOA was established to cover possible loopholes in the implementation of our mutual projects in mind like the APOGLA Scholarship Program. If some our C-7 Board members felt there would be necessary amendments for improvements, we felt we are ready to accommodate. However, it was abrogated. It should be emphasized that C-3 is not a breakaway APO alumni association because it was originally incorporated on May 26, 1998 and gained its status as a 501 C-3 for charitable non-profit organization in February 1999 by the Internal Revenue Service and May 19, 1998 by Franchise Tax Board. APOGLA C-7 was established on May 9, 2016 as a social organization. We are not competing with C-7 as a few of our C-7 brethren perceive it. And there’s no intention to change our C-3 corporate name. We are adding though our business name, APO Global Foundation. Another humanitarian service is afoot to extend livelihood service among the indigenous Dumagats in Nueva Ecija which we christen as “Egg Laying Livelihood Project.” C-3’s main function is a fund-raising entity for C-7 projects especially the APO Kids Scholarship because as you are aware by now, donations coursed through a 501 C-3 are tax deductible. It is difficult to raise funds without this incentive. In fact, our C-3 coffer still has $400 left which will be used when the next APOGLA Scholarship Award kicks in during this 2020 C7 administration. You are also aware by now that APOPGLA C-3 will provide prizes for the video clip regarding various APO Alumni associations to be presented during our ACNA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in September 2021. We are looking for a bigger picture. In fact, when our beneficiaries send us their “thank you” letters, they always refer to us as APOGLA and we did not mind and not offended at all — because we are also members of C-7. What is more important is we are able to render humanitarian relief and service to our less fortunate and underprivileged sectors of our community. Remember, governments around the world encourage humanitarian non-profit organizations like Red Cross, Bill Gates Foundation, et al, because sovereign states cannot solve all the ills that beset our human problems. I hope we also consider the BIGGER PICTURE compared to being parochial. After all, as our APO Toast song reminds us, “Ever Mindful Ever Serving, All Humanity.” – denino1951@gmail.com

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all our Brothers and Sisters celebrating their bdays this month. Life should not only be lived, it should be celebrated. So this month we celebrate YOU! People born in May are more likely to achieve higher success and more love in their life. Even though it’s mostly a relative fact, May people have a better grasp on these elements of life than people born in other months. Emerald is the birthstone of May. Those born during this month are emotional or sensitive, short tempered, restless, love to travel, stubborn, reasonable and self-motivated. It is interesting to note that May is named for the Roman goddess, Maia, who oversees the growth of plants. According to the Romans, May is a blessed month. Here are some of the important days to watch out for this month: May 1st - International Workers’ Day, Cinco de Mayo, 2nd Sunday of May - Mother’s day, Memorial Day - last Monday of May. So with this, we are happy for all of you Mayborn guys and gals! We are all so looking forward to the time when we can return to our normal lives once more - no masks, to converse with friends and relatives freely, dining out with friends, having a romantic dinner etc. etc. Surely, we miss all the fun we have during our GMM’ s and are so eager for that face to face camaraderie. Soon, soon, soon! ************************** Organizations are zealous about following their CBL. This goes true with APOGLA of course. But every now and then, issues pop up that test our mettle. It would be good for us to remember that we are only dealing with issues and never personalities. We should always keep in mind that our CBL define us and should always uphold it. ************************** THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH: RESPECT Respect is a noun that means, for one, the due regard for the feelings, wishes, right, or traditions of others. It is treating others the way I want to be treated. Being considerate and honoring feelings, opinions, and property of others. Here are ways to be respectful and thus getting respected in return. Listen: Listening to what a person has to say is a basic way to respect them. Affirm: When we affirm someone, we’re giving evidence that they matter. Serve: Life on earth is about serving others. Be Kind: When we’re kind to others, we’re giving on ourselves. Be Polite: An act of politeness can literally change a person’s day. Be Thankful: When someone does something for you, you should thank them. So with these in mind, we look forward to your joking us again and do be aware of what’s going on around you. Ok?
