Party! Parte’! … When it comes to Partying in Style, The Glamorous APOGLA Sorority always set the bar on a higher end! After the halt in 2021 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, The much awaited APOGLA - Annual Ladies Night returns to the scene in true California girls fashion! Fab, Fun and Glitz as it was finally celebrated again on Saturday, February 26, 2022 @ The Noypitz , a well known Filipino Bar & Grill hub at the famous Arts District, right at the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE February was a good month for us. Going to the February GMM was quite a distance for most of us and the traffic did not help. Despite the venue in Moreno Valley, we had a good turnout for the 2nd GMM both in person and in virtual. Thank you Bro. Ogie and Weng Jaranilla for opening your home for us to host the meeting. Thank you too, to Gie Paras for preparing all the delicious food.

FYI, Gie was hospitalized last week. Let’s pray for her good health.

The Ladies’ Night was a complete success. Thanks to the Chairman Sis Daemma Mendez, we had a very well attended affair. It was a very memorable fun night at Noypitz Downtown LA. Everyone had a good time.

And to my surprise, I won the golf tournament Class C division that day. Thanks to our coach Tiger Tony, who never gave up on me after almost quitting the sports all together several times.

We have a very active next three months ahead of us. This month, San Fernando Valley is hosting the GMM at Brod Jimmy Bautista’s home. The following day will be our biggest service of the year, the LA Marathon. Please register now if you haven’t.

In April, we’ll have four events in a day. On April 16, we have our Food Bank at Feeding America, then our Easter Family Picnic, our 4th GMM, and the day with a fellowship Brod Bodgie Gapido’s place.

I’m sure that we all miss our annual camping. After two years, we will finally have our camping.

We have reserved two campsites in Lake Perris. The camping chairman Bro. Eric Serrano already did an inventory of our camping Tribo ni Bado Newsletter equipment last Saturday while we moved the is a monthly publication of the camping equipment. Still at Bro Troy’s house, Alpha Phi Omega Greater Los Angeles Alumni we moved all the camping stuff from the old Association exclusively for its members, families and storage to a couple of new shed. ON LENT LENT,, LEADERSHIP AND UKRAINE

By Brother Toti Ayo It’s Ash Wednesday, the 2nd of March, 2022. The beginning of Lent. Lent is the 40-day period that goes through Christ’s suffering to the most Holy day of the year - Christ rising from the dead - The Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This year, Easter Sunday happens to fall on April 17.

The season of Lent invites us to look back, re-live, and meditate on Christ’s suffering, His passion and death on the Cross comes the Holy Week, and His Resurrection The Glory of Easter!

It is an opportunity for us to look closer into ourselves, to discover or re-discover what life is all about and be reminded of what really matters most. This centuries old tradition and practice of our faith we, most of us at least, grew up with.

Today, while we live in a ‘new’ and different world, may we continue to live our faith and lead a more meaningful and reflective life. In this season of Lent, may we re-discover what life is all about and realize what really matters most.

There is beauty in our faith. Especially when it is lived with passion and purpose. All lives are measured in the end.

It is well worth it to be reminded every now and then.

On Leadership.

Very soon, the first quarter of the year 2022 will be over. Allow me to say that our leadership, our APOGLA Leadership is doing very well. Our Executive Officers and our Board of Directors are leading the way. We see in GLA a proactive leadership - dynamic and full of enthusiasm. We feel the members’ trust and confidence they give to the organization as a whole. If there is one indicator of trust in an organization, it is seen in how its members respond to the payment of dues. Thank you fellow members for your diligence in the payment of our annual dues. Again, our only message to our leaders is its prudence, its constant trustworthiness, its transparency in all that it does.

It is noteworthy to mention that we certainly recognize and we appreciate the efforts and the trustworthiness of our past leaders for effecting the kind of leadership that we all deserve. May we always live up to the APOGLA standard of effective leadership.

Speaking of Effective Leadership.

In its second week of Ukraine’s invasion by Russia, it will be hard to overlook Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s display of leadership. On the world stage, Zelenskyy shows what effective leadership is. He is not only dictating and directing, from some bejeweled offices or a palace, he is leading from the frontlines. Taking off his suit and tie, he joined the fight with the people.

If we look back at history, these kinds of leaders, great as they are and have become, paid the ultimate price of their sacrifice and gave their lives for the cause. They are the kind of leaders that people follow. They build trust. They strengthen relationships. They are authentic.

Whatever happens to Ukraine’s fight for freedom against Russia, Zelenskyy will leave an imprint on the world stage. He is a leader to follow. For a freedom fighter, you can kill the body, but not the soul.

We stand with you Ukraine!

Fabulous guest were all dressed up to the nines, Hollywood, California style, of course! and enjoyed the night of high spirited fellowship. The fun started with a sumptuous dinner of filipino food favorites.

Sultry singer Gigi Starr, a famous local pinay entertainer here in SoCal and her band played manila sound and current party hits on stage. Sing-alongs, dancings and crazy funny games made the crowd more lively. Bottomless cocktails, wines , beers and delectable canapes were served throughout the whole evening. It was truly a night to remember for everyone that attended that zestful night. We will absolutely be back again in February next year to celebrate the love month and feminine power.

Amazing APOkid: TIMO THY HERMOSURA ALMAZAN TIMOTHY APO kids spotlight is proud to present Timothy Hermosura Almazan, son of Brod Alex and Sis Irma H. Almazan. Tim is practicing dermatologist in Los Angeles, having recently graduated from Stanford School of Medicine's Dermatology Residency Program, which is among the highest ranked dermatology programs and medical schools in the nation. He a double board certified physician, having completed dual residencies in both internal medicine and dermatology.

Born in Long Beach and raised in Cerritos, CA, Tim is a Southern California native who upholds deeply the LFS values of Alpha Phi Omega. He says: "I am proud to be the son of two APO parents. I learned from my mom and dad the Dr. Timothy H. Almazan M.D. Internal Medicine, Dermatology importance of hard work and discipline. I watched my dad commute 4 hours a day to work just to make ends meet.

I saw my mom wake up at 4 AM every day to go Harbor UCLA and take care of sick patients as a dialysis nurse; she would even get called in in the middle of the night. Both of them did this without any question or complaint. My mom even worked when she was getting radiation treatment for breast cancer. I am so lucky to have such examples in my life and wanted to do the same. They are my heroes. They are the epitome of courage and sacrifice."

Tim says that he tried to work as hard as he could in all his activities, in keeping with his parents' example. He graduated Whitney HIgh School (a distinguished blue ribbon high school) with highest honors and among the top of his class. He then went on to UCLA, majoring in English and pre-med, graduating magna cum laude. At UCLA he was involved with the office of residential life and served as a resident assistant in the dorms during his 3rd and 4th year. He played in the UCLA Marching Band, and was also a collegiate athlete in Tae Kwon Do (a sport he started at the age of 5 and reached the rank of 3rd dan black belt). He went on to medical school at UC San Diego, a top tier, prestigious medical school, then went on to complete sequential residencies in internal medicine and dermatology, both highly competitive fields. "There are a lot of sacrifices I made to get to where I am, but at the end of the day, I kept my eye on the prize and I just believed in myself with all my heart."

Tim hopes that all APO kids continue to follow their dreams and dream big. He is a proud supporter of APO and is a regular donor to APOs many programs and causes.

Endearing Words of Affection Note: Below is the gist of the speech delivered by Bro. Dan E. Nino on March 2, 2022 at Eclectic Dialectic Toastmasters Club-Cerritos. The theme was inspirational. He won the club contest and will represent his club to the Area Contest on March 12, 2022

Are you embarrassed, ashamed, uneasy or you feel awkward, when you say words of affection or endearment like ‘I love you’ at the end of a phone call or just an ordinary conversation. Or when you say ‘God bless, thank you so much, it’s well-appreciated. I apologize. Enjoy the rest of the day or have a great day, brother.’

Well, we should not.

You should say these words when the person that you address these endearing words of affection are still alive and can still hear us. Not when we’re already six feet under the ground.

When my only son Denver was still a kid, he admonished me, “Dad when you picked me up from school, please don’t say darling baby, honey, honey, okay!” I just said yes. But when I picked him up, I could not help but say those endearing words of affection.

Essentially, I’m emotional and so affectionate with my siblings, relatives or dear friends whom I’ve dealt with through the years. We all know that love begets love. When we show love and affection, the favor is returned.

Some of my good friends, especially the women, utter the words “I love you” to me at the end of our conversation.

Of course my response is, ‘I love you too.’ There’s nothing wrong with that. My wife even hears the words “I love you” when I say those words of affection to other people. Don’t wait when we’re already dead.

Those words of endearment means a lot to everyone. They are stress relievers, they are cathartic. They are pleasing and music to our ears. They mean a lot. They emancipates our fears, our anxiety, our shortcomings, etc.

I’m affectionate with my grand nephews and grand nieces, nephews, nieces and cousins. I feel the joy of expressing my words of affection.

At one time, during our Zoom meeting, I asked my grand nephew, Zac from Canada who is now 13 years-old. Who are my true loves, he responded, “Do I have to mention that all the time the names of my cousins whenever you call us,” my grand nephew quipped. ‘Of course,’ I responded with confidence. I want assurance.

I remember six years ago, I went to the Philippines to visit my favorite mother. She stayed with us in Cerritos for many years before she went back to Manila. Before I came back to the U.S. a day before, I bade her farewell. I told her, mother, I’m going back to Los Angeles tomorrow. My mother was nonchalant and just gazing pointblank beyond the horizon. She was suffering from Alzheimer at that time and she could no longer talk. I told her that I love her and that I will be back again to visit her again. After two weeks she died. I went back again to bury her.

Perhaps, she just waited for me to tell her that I love her. Perhaps it was providential that I she was just waiting for me to say those precious words. I wouldn’t be here without my beloved mother. Because right or wrong, my dear mother loved me unconditionally and she never got mad at me.

The same is true with my dad who was hard on me while I was growing up. Before he died, he apologized to me. He said, “Dan please forgive me because I was so hard on you when you were growing up. After a few months, he passed away.

My friends, don’t be afraid to say those endearing words of affection or forgiveness. They are powerful words that are pleasing to our hearts. It liberates the soul. Back to you Mr. Toastmaster. – denino1951@gmail.com

By Dan E. Nino The 2022 Tax Season is very much underway for tax year 2021. Due to the pandemic, there are new tax laws that were enacted like the American Rescue Plan to mitigate the needs of taxpayers especially those who were affected.

Let me count the ways: • If you are qualified and you didn’t receive the Economic impact Payment under the Recovery Credit Rebate of the Biden Administration in 2021, you might still be entitled to receive $1,400. The threshold of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) to be qualified are: $75,000 and below for single; $112,500 and below for Head of Household; and $150,00 and below for Married Filing Jointly.

• If your income is too low and are qualified, you’ll be entitled to an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which will provide you additional credits and refunds. The is a tax credit designed to help low to moderate income taxpayers.

For taxpayers who qualify, it provides a significant tax break that can offset taxes owed or can increase the amount of their refund. Eligibility for the EITC is determined by several factors, like the amount of money earned in a given year and the number of qualifying children.

• The easiest way to calculate a client’s EITC is using a TaxSlayer Professional software, which I’ve been using for many years now.

• Some closing costs on a purchase of a main home are tax deductible.

• Charitable contributions are still very much in place if you want to increase you itemized deductions. If you are a high income taxpayer with plenty of qualified itemized deductions, the tax software will choose the itemized deductions.

• If you are a home owner and you pay the monthly mortgage, the following are still deductible: mortgage interest, mortgage insurance premiums, and real estate taxes paid which is subject to a total cap of $10,000.

• In 2021, the child tax credit can be worth as much as $3,600 for each child aged five and under, up from a maximum of $2,000 per child in 2020. Most parents who qualify for the credit began receiving advance payments of $1,000 in July 2021. The credit phases out for high income taxpayers.

• If you are a business owner, you can deduct many of the costs necessary of running your business.

• If you have an employer and you work at home or remotely, you cannot deduct home office expenses unless you work for yourself.

• A taxpayer may qualify to exclude from their income all or part of any gain from the sale of their main home.

Generally, taxpayers can exclude up to $250,000 if filing single and $500,000 if married and filing jointly from the gain of a sale of a main home.

• If you sell your second or vacation home, the sale is called Personal Capital Asset. The capital gains are taxable unless you reinvest it within the 180 days on another property.

There are many other guides, common deductions and credits that are out there. Just consult your tax preparer or consultant. These deductions can help lower the amount you pay the IRS and increase your chances of refunds. if you are retired and receive your 1099R (distributions from Pensions or Retirement), make sure that you deduct adequate tax withholding so you don’t have to pay large some of taxes during the tax season.

This is a great month for the year to explore historical facts, inte rating people, new concepts, hobbies and all things that make people so awesome.

This is a good sign that we are slowly going back to normalcy.

And it’s Brod Rhoel Reyes’ able leadership that is leading us back to this active, lively and effective meetings. Not to forget, we also discovered the cooking skills of Gie Paras, wife of our VP. Ummmm!
