LADIES “HA T” NIGHT - A VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION “HAT”

Santa Clarita, CA – After Friday’s rainstorm poured over the Southland, the sun slowly peeked out on Saturday afternoon inviting everyone to this year’s Ladies “Hat” Night at Saint Kateri’s Slattery Hall. The ballroom was adorned with centerpieces of hats and flowers, music and the lovely ladies decked in their beautiful, unique and colorful hats.

The bar offered beer; wine, soda and water serve just like in plush hotels. As in previous joint ventures, the Saint Kateri Filipino Ministry and the APO Greater Los Angeles produced this year’s Ladies Night.

The evening began with the Opening Prayer by Betta David, followed by a Blessing from Father Tom Baker, Pastor of Saint Kateri, and then welcome remarks from Art Rivera and Rene Calvario delivered the acknowledgements. A sumptuous buffet dinner of Roast Beef with Mushrooms, Chicken Teriyaki, Baked Sea Bass, Lumpia Shanghai, Pancit, Fresh Garden Salad, Steamed Rice, and Cassava Cakewere served by Neri’s Catering. The entertainment numbers glued the guests to their seats as they watched and listened to Tess Carlos version of “At

Last” and Eric Serrano’s “The Way You Look Tonight.” Alisha Soronio, Santa Clarita’s Recording Artist, provided the Main Event of the entertainment, belting out popular hits punctuated by a stellar performance of “I Will Always Love You.” An added attraction was a dance exhibition by guests Ernie and Susan as they showcased their skills on the dance floor with their scintillating Rumba, Swing, and the elegant Tango ala Dancing With The Stars! The appreciative crowd returned the favor with thunderous applause after every performance.

DJ Ponch played non-stop music as the dance floor was always filled with happy and enthusiastic revelers. We danced, swayed and sang to hits including the Twist, Rock N’ Roll, Cha-Cha-Cha, Swing, Sweet, Line Dancing, Todo-Todo and many more. A sentimental moment was when we honored Orly and Imelda Aguinaldo as they took center stage to the tune of “Tennessee Waltz” in celebration of their upcoming 55the Wedding Anniversary. When asked about the secret to the longevity of their marriage, Orly replied “Obey,” and Imelda said “A lot of prayers.” Cheers and Congratulations!

PRESIDENT’S MESSA GE MESSAGE Our leadership in APOGLA always thrives on new ideas. Our success depends on our ability to use the gifted talents in our membership and harness this strength. However, our time, family, job, health, logistics, finances, and the distance to where we live hinder us all. So how can these breakthrough ideas prosper? The word is “COMMITMENT.” I know that this word is very difficult to achieve and these hindrances are for real. Let me bounce the ball to all of you and ask, “What does a leader do if he/she reaches out to someone and just a handful wants to commit? I understand all our commitments; I’ve been there and done that. Guilty as charged. I understand that our family is a commitment, our job, our loved one, and savings for the future and the list goes on. If you want this organization to survive in years to come, I need your commitment.

Why am I saying all of this? I was faced with a number one challenge early this year, a resource person to go to. I am very thankful for those that responded to my call but a few others can do better. Let us see what happens next in the coming months.

Every Good Decision Starts With a Stop More often than we like, most of us face choices that can have serious and lasting impact on our lives. Do we go along with the crowd? Do we tell someone off, quit a job, or end a relationship? Unfortunately, a drum roll warning us that the stakes are high does not precede these decisions. Even worse, we often don’t have a lot of time to figure out what to do.

It’s no surprise that most bad decisions – the ones that mess up our lives – are made impulsively or without sufficient reflection.

Ancient proverbs warn us to “Count to ten when you’re angry” or “Think ahead.” But anger and the lack of preplanning are only two factors that can impede excellent decision-making. Fatigue, fear, frustration, stress, and impatience also create obstacles to wise choices.

Just as we learned to look both ways before we cross the street, we can learn to systematically analyze every important decision-making situation to allow us to arrive at conclusions that are both effective and ethical.

Each decision, therefore, should start with a stop – a forced moment of reflection to help us clarify our goal, evaluate the completeness and credibility of our information, and devise an alternate strategy, if necessary, to achieve the best possible result. Stopping also allows us to muster our moral willpower to overcome temptations and emotions that could lead to a rash, foolish, or ill-considered choice.

While it’s great to have a day or two to sleep on a problem, or even a few hours, many situations don’t afford us that luxury. But a pause of even a few moments can often be enough.

BO ARD OF DIRECT OR’S CORNER BOARD DIRECTOR’S Greetings to all our brethren and welcome to our first report for the year 2017! I’m happy to note that the members of theBoard are just rarin’ to roll their sleeves and eager to go to work. I’m also glad that indeed, though there are only seven of us,we are made up of different personalities and capabilities that would make any meeting vibrant and interesting. As chairman, I look forward to an intelligent and fruitful discussion of issues and the immediate action on projects that are vital.

During our last meeting, members were tasked to head a certain committee they would be responsible for. They are the following:Sis Pres. Betta David, Director for the Executive Committee; PP Eric Serrano, Rules and Ethics Committee; Bro Raul David, the Finance and Budget Committee; Sis Beth Ventura, the Benefits and Charity Committee; and Sis Fely Logarta Montecillo, Documentation and Archives Committee.

This year, we would like to see more members sitting in during our board meeting to familiarize them with how the board works. They could not participate in the proceedings but they can do so only if they have important and relevant issues they want the Board to hear. For the newcomers,this is one way to get to know the workings of our organization. Through this, we would be in a way training the future officers of APOGLA. Lastly, the Board this year will exert all effort to resolve issues that need to be answered like: what to do with unrit members,how to deal with erring officers and other important matters. A large portion of our time will be devoted to coming up with solutions to matters of great import. We, all members of the Board and yours truly, are looking forward to a busy, fruitful,invigorating, and significant 2017!

Sowing bountiful harvest from the seeds we planted is not just a matter of luck; it’s more of perfect timings and proper exposures . . . and of course, GENES too! YAIKS. Yes! indeed, in Tinseltown-LA, opportunities are limitless for those “Who’s got what it takes!”

Out of six babies with Wowo and Wowa in the inset picture, three(3) of them, namely, Arianna, Luca and Javien are commercial models earning a modest living for their individual futures!

Arianna (daughter of Vanessa and Marcus) a four year old veteran, had stints with Disney Store, Disney Princess, Disney Babies, Little Tykes, Crazy 8, Infantino, Munchkin, Target, Kohls, Jakks Pacific and First-5 California.

Luca, their 2-year old son, was with the TV series NCIS (early on, as a newborn daughter of crime lab assistant Dr. Palmer).

He was also with the commercial for First 5 California along with mom Vanessa.

Javien, an almost 3 year old monster (son of Annie and Jove) has so far, modeled for H and M, Little Tykes, Lands End and UNIQLO.

At the toys section of stores, keep an eye on familiar cutie faces, especially the most exposed Arianna. Paloma Model and Talent is their manager/agent with Jovanni Photography as one of their accrediteds for headshots. (Google them both for your kids’ opportunities. Who knows?)

What a BLESSING for the Yambooty clan!!! And YES, we are BEAMING with PRIDE, though out-of-character for this humble couple. We simply can’t help it! WHOA!

SISTERS’ SNO W FR OLIC 2017 SNOW FROLIC The phrase ‘It never rains in Southern California’ can be the farthest from the truth. Since the start of 2017, the series of back to back storms, that hit us so far, had brought fresh white, powdery snow in our local mountains, which kept calling to the sisters of APOGLA. Many of us reminisced our 2015 trip to Lake Arrowhead, wherein 8 sisters had assembled together, to do some serious bonding, of all night non-stop chitter chattering, watching scary movies and exploring the town. Adding icing to the cake, we took advantage of the outlet shopping, where the picture says it all. What we missed in this trip was the snow.

The scarcity of rain had not allowed us to do that.

The question that started popping up is, “When are we going to do this again, sisters?” This is what started the sisters’ 2017 Snow Frolic. Because of the abundance of snow, we were determined to take advantage of it this year, by hook or by crook.

We hurriedly searched for a cabin to rent and we needed to do it soon before all the snow melted away.

So the opportunity arose on February 11-12 in a cabin in Wrightwood.

There were 8 of us again this year - Hazel, Emma, Hanigrace, Dae, Ruth, Josie, Jen and myself.

We were also accompanied by Jobee, Roehl, Lito and of course the APO Kids in our families. On the 1st day, the early birds were welcomed by actual falling snow, a very rare treat indeed!

We all stayed up very late, not because of the ship-sounding ‘night noises’ that a human body can actually produce in their sleep but because we did not want to miss any of the fun; The few hours of sleep did not deter us in braving the strong frigid wind up in the Mountain High area the next day. We did not want to miss playing in the snow this time around. So together with our kids, up we go to do some serious merrymaking in the snow. We will keep organizing mini trips like these because it is so enjoyable and it is in a different setting which helps glue us together- whether at work or at play.

By Bro. Dan E. Nino DON’T FORGET TO FILE YOUR INCOME TAX RETURNS How time really flies so fast. The income tax season is upon us once again. This, we cannot avoid. As the saying goes, there are two things that are inevitable in our lives: death and taxation.

New tax laws have been enacted to ease our tax burdens especially ordinary and middle class citizens like you and me. For one, the tax exemptions for 2016 is $4,050 compared to $4,000 in 2015.For standard deductions: single or married filing separately it’s $6,300; for married filing jointly or qualifying widower, it’s $12,600; for head of household, it’s $9,300.

Updated deductions which are usually overlooked are also in place like medical devices such as eyeglasses, hearing devices and contact lenses, postsecondary education like American opportunity,lifelong learning credits and qualifying workrelated education to maintain or improve skills (Form 1098-T tuition fee statement is required), health insurance premiums if self-employed and many more.

But remember, you must keep records, receipts, documents and cancelled checks to verify these deductions.

Other deductions include business travels, lodging, meals, entertainment, continuing education for professional growth, legal fees, alimony, real estate taxes, home mortgage interest, home insurance, subscriptions to professional journals, health insurance premiums if self-employed, protective clothing required at work, among others.

Make sure that you have essential health coverage. There is penalty in the absence of coverage. There are exemptions however. Some of these areincome below the filing threshold, coverage is considered unaffordable (meaning the required contribution is more than 8.13% of your household income), U.S. citizens living abroad and certain non-citizens for at least 330 full days, if the person is incarcerated, members of certain religious sects, general hardship, etc.

In addition, the new standard mileage rate for business use of a vehicle is .54 cents per mile and earned income tax credit has increased. If you have a child 13 years of age and below, there’s a $1,000 child tax credit.

There are multitudes of tax laws and regulations in our U.S. tax system because they are updated every year. There are so many things to read and learn because of these changes. Should you have inquiries about income tax and sales tax, please don’t hesitate to call me — for free consultation.

In case I’m not familiar with the answer, I can research on that tax question and can call you right back.

It's the Love Month and greetings to all lovers! What is love? There are thousands of definition of love but I like this one of Stendhall in his 1822 treatise most of all...."Love is like a fever which goes quite independently of the will...there are no age limits for love." Ah.....love!

We also greet our brothers and sisters who are celebrating their birthdays this month. Those born during Feb.1 - 18 are under the sign of Aquarius.Those born between Feb 19 to the 29th are under Pisces.

They are authentic and believe in learning from their own experiences. They create an aura of mystery around themselves, that makes them even more attractive to the opposite sex. They are developers in their field. They have tremendous will power, are generous and helpful.
