While 2021 remained to be challenging, APOGLA stayed focused and hopeful on its programs and activities. After more than one hundred revelers attended the Roaring 20’s Thanksgiving celebration at the Valencia Northbridge Clubhouse on November 13, Courtyard Marriott Baldwin Park opened its doors to our 41st Anniversary Ball on December 11 to an excited and thrilled APOGLA family.

The evening started with a sumptuous buffet dinner and as soon as everyone settled down, the crowd was serenaded by Violin virtuoso and Boeing Jet Pilot Brod Carlo Araneta. Playing his hits after hits the crowd responded with appreciative applause. The program proper began with the singing of the US and the Philippines National Anthems then, Past President Betta David set the tone for the evening with her grateful and graceful opening prayer. Vice President Jen Evangelista then delivered her welcome remarks followed by the solemn tribute to brothers, sisters and family members who passed on during the year with a special rendition by Brod Carlo of the theme from the movie Somewhere in Time. A community singing of John Lennon’s song Imagine followed as we basked in the glow of the song’s deep meaning.

The APOKids Scholars were then presented by VP Jen with their Plaques of Recognition and $1,000.00 check to begin their journey into college life. Sean Erick Aralar, son of Brod Eric and Toni Aralar, graduated from Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield with a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.69. He is currently a freshman at the University of California Davis pursuing a BS in Biological Sciences (Major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.) Lauren Calvario, daughter of Brod Rene and

PRESIDENT’S MESSA MESSAGE GE HAPPY NEW YEAR APOGLA! First of all, I would like to congratulate all the 2021 officers, especially the dynamic duo of Bro. Domel and Sis Jen Evangelista. With the challenges of the pandemic, they managed to run GLA more than expected.

So let’s get 2022 going!

On our first GMM, we have a lot of information to be shared. We will unveil our proposed Calendar of Events, with all the GMM venues of the year, proposed services, our fellowships, our symposium, our new APOGLA website, proposed budget, and proposed fundraising.

You heard the rumor right. We are giving shirts for all members who pay their annual dues. We are also printing our revised CBL/ P&P to give away. There are more major announcements at the GMM. So, plan and mark the date. All GMMs are scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of each month.

All these plans have been discussed and approved by our executive committee members but we also want to hear from you. If you have suggestions and comments, we are open to hear them, so let us know.

Let’s start this year positively. We have a very aggressive schedule ahead of us. We scheduled the year as if we are back to normal. We will keep our traditional events and revive old traditions.

This pandemic is not over. Let’s still be safe. Get vaccinated and always protect yourselves.

We encourage all to attend this informative and exciting first meeting as a sign of your support for APOGLA 2022 administration and activities. For those who cannot physically attend the GMM, virtual conference call will be available. We will post the details on our email group, website and social media.

We’ll see you at our first GMM on January 15, 2022, at the Rosemead Masonic lodge.

Sis y Ang-Ga yon is 2021 Dr ado I. Ur eta Awar dee Sis.. Melod Melody Ang-Gay Dr.. Libr Librado Ureta ardee PP SIS MELODY ANG-GAYON is the Librado Ureta Awardee for 2021. Her stellar achievements and service to the organization made her clinch the award. She has, in addition to this, faithfully and outstandingly exemplified APO’s ideals.

Among her achievements are: APOGLA President for 2013 with the dictum “We lead, Build and Serve”, represented the organization to Philippine Biennial Conventions and currently an active member of ETA Chapter AA and Sorority AA here and in the Phil. And in sports, she’s currently the Secretary of APO Golf USA. During her 2013 Presidency, the 1st joint Food Bank with APO USA members and pledges occurred, and the APOKids Reunion became a reality.

Sports, too, was not left behind during her Presidency. There were basketball tournaments, bowling fun day, and friendly golf game with South Bay. So far, there have been 37 Librado Awardees to date and PP Melody is only the 6th female awardee.

During the awarding, Sis Melody did something amazing - sharing her reward with another Sis, PP Sis Emma Galang. Is it symbolic? Is it a message? Only the awardee, PP Sis Melody knows the answer.

Anniv ersar sary Celebr bra Winnie Calvario, graduated Magna Cum Laude from La Salle High School in Pasadena with a final GPA of 3.979. Lauren is currently pursuing her Pre-Nursing courses at the California State University of Long Beach. Jehmiel Vinluan, son of Brod Jehiel and Luzviminda Vinluan, graduated from William J. Pete Knight High School in Palmdale with a GPA of 4.5. He is currently a freshman at the University of Santa Cruz majoring in Computer Science.

Sis Irma Almazan, the 2020 Librado I. Ureta Awardee took to the podium to present the 2021 LIU Award. She first invited the past recipients to gather at the dance floor and take a bow. The nominee has been with APOGLA since 1986 and has served in various positions and committees and is also active in community, church and social activities at the same time enjoying the joys of being grandparents with her husband. The 2021 Dr. Librado I Ureta Award went to Sis Amelia Melody Ang-Gayon! Melody received the award accompanied by her husband Roland as she expressed surprise but is grateful for the honor. She invited Sis Emma Galang to join her on stage and would like to share with her the award because they have worked together for many years in service of APOGLA. Congratulations Melody!

The APOGLA Past Presidents were then invited to the dance floor and introduced themselves, their chapter, year of presidency and their hometown. Another fun trivia for everyone.

2021 President Domel Evangelista took center stage to present the Special Gold Awards to Brothers and Sisters who have been APO for 50 years or more. A special commemorative jacket was given to all who are in attendance. As the names of the Golden Girls and Boys were called, each one was fitted with a blue jacket to the cheers and applause of the crowd.

The Guest Speaker and Inducting Officer was introduced by Program Hosts Winnie and Art. The Honorable Edgar Badajos, Consul General of the Philippine Consulate General Los Angeles was a graduate of Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Philippines Baguio and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

In his speech, he thanked APOGLA for the more than four decades of service to the community and its partnership with the projects of the Philippine Consulate General of Los Angeles.

He expressed his appreciation for the organization’s continued programs of service to our homeland in the various medical, dental, social, scholarship and disaster relief operations. He then invited the incoming officers, directors and area coordinators to raise their right hands and tasked each one of them to perform their duties and responsibilities in the highest standards of leadership, friendship, service and humanity. Kudos to the 2021 Executive Officers, Directors and Area Coordinators for a job well done! And Congratulations to the 2022 Executive Officers, Directors and Area Coordinators, time to roll up our sleeves! A Plaque of Appreciation was then presented by President Domel and VP Jen Evangelista to ConGen Edgar Badajos.

In his valediction, 2021 President Domel Evangelista, expressed his gratitude to the officers, directors and to his partner VP Jen for their dedication and commitment to serve APGLA during these most challenging and uncertain times amid the covid19 pandemic. In 2021, while observing the CDC health guidelines, the Team of President Domel, VP Jen and COB Beeboy Mansilla, guided and directed the programs of APOGLA with caution and concern. GMMs were held virtually via zoom. January was the induction ceremony officiated by APO Philippines Vice President Datu Amerhassan Lucman via zoom. And during the year, Saturday morning hikes on the hills and walk paths of Santa Clarita and SoCal destinations, Blood Drive, community services at the Long Beach Community Table, at the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve, the APO North vs. South Golf Tournament in Napa Valley, the Los Angeles Marathon, the ACNA Convention in Florida were all fervently participated in by APOGLA. GMMs in person when feasible and fellowships were hosted at the Rosemead Masonic Lodge and at the homes of Brod Bodgie Gapido and Brod Jo and Mary Ann Peneza, Brod Tony and Ella Gomez and Brod Art and Gie Rivera. Thus, with the hard work, cooperation, and support of everyone in 2021, we can all look back and see the year as another memorable experience. To close this chapter in his Presidency, Brod Domel handed the Gavel of Responsibility to Incoming President Roehl Reyes.

In grateful recognition of President Domel’s service during the year 2021 and the pursuit of the theme “Looking Back, Moving Forward: Building a Future Worthy of our Past.” Incoming President Roehl Reyes, presented Brod Domel a Plaque of Appreciation At his induction into office, Brod Roehl was proudly joined by his daughters Tara and Alexa. In his inaugural address, he espoused the 2022 theme of “Restoring Progress by Renewed Commitment.” He encouraged each one to stay resilient, vigilant and be safe in our continued efforts of making APOGLA the leader and epitome of a great organization and together we will move on to make a difference in the lives of others. He initiated the appointment of Leadership, Friendship, Service and Event Coordinators for the year 2022. We now look forward and trust that the coming year will be another successful journey for all.

After the formalities of the evening, non-stop dancing, raffle draws, entertainment numbers and fellowship permeated the air of the ballroom until the last dance was called at 12:00 midnight. Dance music was provided by DJ Allan Villar. The celebration continued at the Hospitality Suite for more food, fun, fellowship, drinks, and pleasantries.

Our gratitude to the December Committee, the Souvenir program committee and to our spouses, family, and friends for a totally wonderful year-end celebration. Special thank you goes out to Winnie Calvario, for sharing the stage with me in this our second stint as Hosts of the December Affair. It was well worth it, and we are pleased to have been part of this annual tradition. Cheers and see you all soon!

The Evolution of APOGLA & APO Global Foundation In retrospect, since I love History in whatever form, my topic for this first TNB of the new year is about the evolution of both APOGLA and APO Global Foundation. After all, we’re on our 42nd year as a broad and the first and largest Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association outside of the Philippines. This will provide a snapshot of the way we were and the way we navigate our future in pursuit of Leadership, Service and Friendship – especially to our newcomers.

Our beloved APO Alumni was founded on October 30, 1980, at the residence of Bro. Rey Manikad in downtown Los Angeles as Alpha Phi Omega Philippines Alumni Association of Southern California in the heart of Los Angeles. It had its first formal induction at the now defunct Bayanihan Restaurant in 1981 on Temple St. downtown L.A. with the late Bro. Earle M. Herbert, an alumnus of UCLA, as our guest of honor and inducting officer. Our first president was Epsilon-initiated Bro. Jess L. Castillo.

I learned that Bro. Jess wanted to name it APO Alumni of California but brethren then from Northern California could not participate in meetings and activities with Southland brods. That name did not push through.

Supporting Bro. Jess were his three vice presidents for LFS: Bro. Doms Tunque, Bro. Toti Ayo and Sis Lisa Ingco. Among those charter members who formed our first alumni association were brods Egay Ninofranco, Nelson Silao, Alex Aquino, Christian David, Sis Myrna Tangco, and the late brods Fidel “Pungay” Aquino and Bonjie Ingco. The tambayan of these brods and sis were at the garage where Bro. Toti Ayo used to live on Hobart St., Los Angeles.

After hibernating for a couple of years, perhaps because most of us were just trying to establish our foothold as immigrants in this adopted country, our organization was rekindled on May 27, 1984. It started when I was then working at California Examiner, a FilAm newspaper. I bumped into Bro. Gil Magno’s office at a law firm on Temple St., Los Angeles. I saw an APO decal at the back of a car windshield parked in front of his office. I sought him inside, with the receptionist calling him out. Lo and behold, it was Bro. Gil Magno, my cum-provinciano from Pangasinan like Bro. Jess.

To make a long story short, he asked me to write letters of invitation and call several brods and also publish it in several newspapers about this effort to revive our organization which coincided during the birthday celebration of Bro. Gil S. Magno at Hickory Park in Torrance. Bro. Librado I. Ureta, our president emeritus, advisor, and founder of APO Philippines on March 2. 1950 at Alpha Chapter was also in attendance. Linda Magno, a sister of Bro. Gil and a recording Philippine artist whom I had the chance to interview way back, entertained us.

During the caucus later, it was decided that we’ll reorganize APO Philippines Alumni of Southern California.

Thereafter, we had an election at the Heritage Park in Cerritos on Aug. 25, 1984. Bro. Toti A. Ayo was overwhelmingly elected president. This 1984 revival year was dubbed as “Renaissance Period.” Other officers elected were Bro. Bonjie Y. Ingco, vice president; Sis Betta M. David as treasurer; and Bro. Patrick Afan, auditor. I was elected then as Secretary General and Bro. Geoffrey P. Arroyo as deputy secretary general.

Our Induction dubbed as Founders Day was held on Dec. 15, 1984 at Skylinks Golf & Country Club in Long Beach with Bro. Earle M. Herbert as our guest of honor. Subsequently, our international foundation gathering was christened as December Affair.

On July 19, 1998, the APO Philippines Alumni Association of SoCal’s corporate name was changed to Alpha Phi Omega Philippines of Greater Los Angeles (APOPGLA). It was duly registered with the Secretary of State. Among those who signed the Articles of Incorporation who are still around were Bro. Francis Franco (APO San Diego), Bro. Peewee Munson (APO South Bay), Bro. Melvin Villaver (APOGLA) and Bro. Antonio “Baby” Rivera of Gamma Kappa Alumni Philippines.

The new entity was approved by the California Franchise Tax Board under Code Section 23701d on May 19, 1998, as a charitable organization. APOPGLA’s determination as a 501 C-3 as a public benefit, tax-exempt entity was approved by the Internal Revenue Service, on Feb. 25, 2001.

During my term as president of APOPGLA in 2015, majority of the members (56 of us) voted to reorganize a a 501 C-7, a social, mutual benefit non-profit corporation and renamed our organization as APO Greater Los Angeles with an acronym APOGLA without the Philippines as part of the name. The vote was 43-13 in favor of a 501 C-7. Thereafter, we received the determination from the Internal Revenue Service recognizing APOGLA as a 501 C-7 effective May 24, 2016, also as a tax-exempt non-profit organization.

Meanwhile, APOPGLA was not dissolved and continued to exist. Bro. Francis Franco served as its president. Soon after, I took over in 2020 as CEO and Board Chairman. To prevent confusion between APOPGLA and APOGLA, the name of our C-3 organizations was changed to APO Global Foundation that was approved by California’s Secretary of State on July 28, 2021. It has nine board members from both the U.S. and the Philippines.

The history of our two entities is still being written. It is a continuing historical saga and evolution as I gather more information.

A NEW YEAR, A NEW HOPE

By Brother Toti Ayo Greetings to my fellow Members and Familial Members!

Another year is past, and we welcome a New Year 2022! Though we were badly affected and are once again visited by another variant of this Covid19 pandemic, we are thankful and grateful for this precious gift of Life.

Dynamic and progressive, are two necessary elements that I consider relevant for an organization to thrive. These factors are qualities that we witness in our organization, year after year. We have been blessed with an abundant source of leaders and a resource in leadership - able and effective.

More than anything else, we are grateful for these gifts.

While at times we fall short, our God-given strength overpowers these weaknesses. As an organization, we have gone far beyond where others have failed. We have by far, passed the ‘test of time’. We have recognized the basic tenets of courtesy and respect. We have committed ourselves to uphold these basic principles.

Consequently, we, and the coming generations shall be assured of a really dynamic, progressive, and respectable organization that we are.

We are blessed with a good number of worthy paying members who pay their annual dues faithfully.

That in itself, speaks for itself.

If there is one message (to our Leaders) that we must listen from these members, it is this: ‘We trust you with our financial dues and contributions. We shall count on your trustworthiness in taking care of our coffers.’

Further, given every opportunity, allow me to mention our membership classification on ‘Familial Membership’ as found in our By-laws. We have this defined for a reason. For the benefit of our New Members, may I briefly mention: Familial Members are the respective Spouse and children of active members in good standing. They shall enjoy the rights and privileges of this Association EXCEPT for the right to vote and be voted upon.

So to our spouses, our family, we welcome you to enjoy our Samahan. The APOGLA, will not go far without our families with us. We thank and express our appreciation to our Spouses for the greater part of their contribution in achieving our goals. The nobility of our family values that we adhere to and that which we promote is an APOGLA principle. It is too good to be forgotten; too precious to be broken!

Finally, if I may add, with all that we may be going through in this life’s journey, may we be blessed in so many ways. Love, mercy, forgiveness and compassion will take us far beyond. . . and as sure as the sun rises in the east, everyone of us do make a difference in APOGLA. Yes, A New Year. A New Hope. 5Jan2022

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! May 2022 bring peace, joy, love, good health and prosperity to all of us! ***************************** The beginning of the year informs us of predictions. I’m particularly interested in them especially if it comes from Nostradamus. He published his book “Prophecies” in 1555. He has been credited with predicting everything from the rise of Hitler to the shooting of JFK. Here are some predictions from Nostradamus we should be on the lookout for in 2022.

First, he mentioned a prediction of a possible breakout of WW III in France or France’s qualification into the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Wonder which one would it be?

Another fearsome prediction is his warning of rising prices in a failing economy. Political stability, Brexit, and a worldwide pandemic have all contributed to an inflation boom in recent years. It’s safe to assume that he was telling us not to be surprised if 2022 is the year that inflation and hunger lead to rebellion.

Rising sea temperatures climbing, sea levels rising, and food chain complications already taking place, is 2022 going to be the year where temperatures reach breaking point? We are already seeing the extinctionlevel event happening over the globe. The death of coral reefs, destruction of natural habitats and declining of fish population could be a warning that Nostradamus’ predictions are becoming real.

Would you believe he also foresaw artificial technology? Technology has evolved so much that it’s hard to predict what developments will take place from one year tote next. Nostradamus hypothesized about artificial intelligence many years ago. Artificial intelligence can range from smart speakers and predictive text to facial recognition and self-driving cars. Those born under the sign of Capricorn consider time as a valuable resource.

They are patient, have perseverance, and have great dedication. It is represented by the she-goat, ax mythological creature with the body of a goat and the tail of a fish. They are skilled at handling the material and emotional realms.

The Aquarians are innovative, progressive and revolutionary. Aquarius is represented by the water bearer, the mystical healer who bestows water of life upon the land. Aquarius is dedicated to making the world a better place.
