How Does Juvéderm Work? As you age, your skin loses some of its hyaluronic acid, a process that is sped up if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun. The hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm® helps keep your skin hydrated, thus restoring and maintaining its volume. Hyaluronic acid also appears to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that contribute to the skin’s fullness and elasticity.

Juvéderm manufacturer (Allergan) uses a chemical “cross-linking” process that binds the individual chains of hyaluronic acid into a long-lasting gel with a very smooth consistency. Because of the gel’s smoothness, your face also looks and feels smooth and • natural. It happens every holiday season; you find the perfect dress for your festive fete, but can’t find the matching bra. While showing skin is in, you don’t want your undergarment peaking out from your showstopper gown. But, we’ve got you covered with our favorite fixes for those tricky silhouettes. STRAPLESS A strapless look allows for the most support. While you can take the straps off of many multi way bras, a corset or bustier offers staying power for those with a fuller set of girls. DEEP PLUNGE A deep plunging neckline displays your cleavage, so you’ll want to go with a U-plunge bra. As the name suggests, the underwire dips into a U, allowing for skin to show all the way down to your sternum. Depending on the cut of your dress there are backless versions, as well.

HALTER When it comes to Halter dresses look for a convertible style bra such The Marie Jo Tom Convertibl Bra . It will easily become your go to bra with their convertible straps that adjust in the back - adding more versatil ity for not only halter but criss-cross dresses. BACKLESS Backless is a glamorous choice and a top pick for many, especially for some added drama. There are a couple of choices, but most will consist of some sort of adhesive to allow the support to stay in place. The Nu-Bra which some people jokingly refer to as “chicken cutlets” are very popular and completely backless, but only really work up to a cup size C. Most will have a front-closure for an added lift. Another option is underwire cups of a demi bra, but with adhesive sides that will cling to your rib cage.

leave with the brands you love

If the back of your dress is just a little too low for your usual bra, you can use a low-back converter. It consist of straps that attach to the hooks in the back, and then cross in front of your abdomen before fastening lower on your back.

TRICKY CUT OUTS If you have a dress full of trendy cutouts or sheer mesh, apply pasties with medical or double-sided tape. It might not be the comfiest, but you’ll be tucked in and ready to steal the spotlight. A final tip is to bring your dress to your favorite lingerie shop. The associates know their stock and will work with you to find the perfect fit.

Written And Makeup By: Ashley Bromirski Photography By: Terrence Jones

24 | triangle style

Leah’s lifelong love of fashion started at an early age fueled by popular magazines and trends of the time but her passion for creating and designing was sparked by her dear Aunt Evie who taught her the basics of sewing and “that with a little bit of creativity and a lot of hard work, [she] could sew her own clothes”. Leluna Star specializes in customized, made to order women’s and children’s clothing, accessories and unique home décor.

STITCHES OF LOVE FROM LEAH… “I’ve been creating and designing for almost 20 years but it wasn’t until 2006 that my passions became a reality and Leluna Star was officially born. I love creating custom, one-of-a-kind items and working with my clients to design items they can’t find anywhere in the stores. I also create unique items for children that are easy to care for and perfect for baby shower gifts, birthdays, or any day of the week. I’m constantly designing and often working late into the night but I love what I do so it hardly seems like work. My husband Brian is my biggest supporter and our daughter Madeleine is my greatest inspiration.”

WHAT’S TRENDING NOW AT LELUNA STAR?... • Our latest inspiration is our “Dreamland Collection”, an upscale children’s line of gowns, skirts and costumes where the customer gets to be part of the design process from start to finish. • Cotton Holiday Gift Bags! Best part, they’re reusable! • Bold, brightly colored holiday dresses • Twirling skirts with pom-pom detailing • Kimonos with leggings • Classic bow ties for the little gentlemen in your life • Show some love for our state with NC Love Accent Pillows in a range of fabrics

Three Easy Steps To

WEEKEND CHIC This time of year our schedules begin to heat up and weekends become busier than ever. However, a packed social calendar filled with basketball games, date nights, family gatherings and running errands can leave you wondering what to wear! I have an easy formula that I want to share with you that will leave you looking forward to the weekends because getting dressed will become so much fun

START WITH A GREAT PAIR OF JEANS Whether in a dark wash denim or a bold bright, find the pair that fits you best. Try a pair of pull on skinny jeans that feel like leggings, or the season's hottest style - bootcut. Stretch is key here, and I recommend something comfortable and chic.

Beija Flor pullon Kelly jeans are the bomb!

ADD IN A CHIC TOP A few things to consider with your top are that it should be loosefitting, yet gracefully skim the body. You want comfort without totally ditching fit, so something that has built-in waistline definition or is in a weight-y knit that will flatter your figure is key. Choose a top that can easily be layered under a cardigan or jacket, yet that looks great on its own. Layers are key this time of year but you don’t want to feel that you can’t take your sweater or jacket off because your top doesn’t

SLIP ON A THIRD LAYER Whether a cozy cardigan, a chic cape or a jaunty jacket. I love wrap styles for this because they’re easy to throw on or take off, but whatever style you choose, opt for something that shows your shape rather than adds bulk and covers it up. Add a pop of color to your look by wearing a jacket in a bold bright or an unexpected texture, and repeat this element in another accessory to tie it all together. Three easy pieces will get you started. Add in a great pair of comfy shoes, booties or boots, and some understated accessories. A great bag is essential to finishing your look, but is also necessary for function. I know personally that I carry more things in my bag on the weekends and having a bag that can hold it all without compromising my style is essential. Rock your weekends in style! TS

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE SINCE WE FEATURED YOU IN THE FALL 2012 ISSUE? It's definitely been an action packed couple of years! I even had the chance to

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE SINCE WE FEATURED YOU IN THE FALL 2010 ISSUE? Being able to continue to

participate in volleyball has been a huge plus for me, as I enjoyed playing three sports in high school. Sports help young people prepare for so many avenues of life and I hope to leave a lasting impression - that although winning isn't everything - striving to become a better individual is.

ARE YOU STILL INVOLVED IN SOME SORT OF WAY WITH THE MISS NC PAGEANT? I actually traveled back to Miss America with the reigning Miss NC, Kate Peacock, this past September to ride with her in the “Show Me Your Shoes” Parade. The pageant had moved in January from Las Vegas (when I competed) back to Atlantic City. In Vegas, we had a sort of makeshift walking-parade, but it was nothing like the historical parade on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. It was pouring rain and we got soaked but we truly made memories that we will cherish together forever! It’s really important to me that I attend local contests and the state pageant each year, giving support to the contestants however I can. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? Interestingly, the next five years are somewhat up in the air for me. I love what I do; however, I don't ever wish to close the door on any possibility that might be available for me to grow as an individual. I have family in Mississippi and Tennessee, and that surely offers prospects to broaden my horizons, should something interesting present itself in the way of a career opportunity that might take me closer to those special people in my life. Additionally, I often wonder how I might use my extensive education toward other pursuits. I guess...the sky's the limit!

AND THE WINNER IS... ‘BEST FOOD TRUCK IN AMERICA’ IS RALEIGH-BASED Wriitten By Kristy Stevenson Photos courtesy Food Network 34 | triangle style

Do you have a global appreciation for delicious food? Does thin sliced beef with marinade on a Hawaiian bun, with a side of kimchi and homemade sriracha mayo plus Thai Bubble Tea sound like lunch? Then you’ll love Raleigh-based food truck professionals Pho Nomenal Dumpling who recently took home the title of "Best Food Truck in America" on the Food Network's sixth season of the Great Food Truck Race. The Pho Nomenal team (Sophia Woo, Sunny Lin, and Becca Plumlee) run a dumpling and pho food truck – Chinese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese cuisine – that’s literally been rolling round the Triangle since 2014. For the show, they travelled the famed Route 66 with well received Asianfusion dishes of pork and chive dumplings, stuffed hamburger, short ribs, steak tacos, toasted ravioli, and loaded Greek chicken tater tots, just to name a few. Their main goal has always been to source locally, give back to the community, and have a sense of humor while doing it. Initially known

as Dump Pho King, the business is run by one UNC graduate (Woo), and two grads from NC State (Lin and Plumlee). They re-branded themselves as the Pho Nomenal Dumpling truck earlier this year. “Life has been super hectic and really fun since the show,” said Woo. “Business is booming and having people come up to the truck saying they've watched us and cheered us on us has been really surreal and flattering!” As winners, Pho Nomenal took home a $50,000 cash prize and plan to keep their momentum flowing, possibly opening a brick-and-mortar location with the money. For now, they are grateful to be busy and getting to do what they love every day. “We want to do more of the same, but better and on a larger scale,” said Woo. She and Lin always wanted a way to explore this area and our state, and in doing so, figured out a way to connect through food, create value and give back.

Finishing Touch Jewelry The team is always adding new featured items and specials to their menu, currently collaborating with Chef Andrew Schaumann (of the former Sol Taco Food Truck) who brings a whole new spin to how they think about foodstuff. “What we are most grateful and excited about is the boost that the show has given us so that we can start to focus more on that goal of contributing to the community,” said Woo. In the coming weeks, the award winning truck can be found in Cary, Durham, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Raleigh, and Wake Forest. Please visit for their full schedule and menu.

The Top 10 Benefits of Hot Yoga

Wri en By Savannah Guild

Result-oriented •• Editorial/TV/Film Anti-Aging Skin Care • Fashion/Portraits • Cosmetics •• Lash Enhancements Nutrition & Weight Loss • Baby Care

HOT TOPIC The New Year gets many of us thinking about health. It’s the go to resolution a er the party the night before. Our health is our most important asset. Without it those collard greens for money and black-eyed peas for luck won’t ma er. It’s our greatest gift a er the holidays, the chance to start fresh, to start anew. One of the ho est ways to get in shape this season is the practice of hot yoga. We’ve all thought about the tough workout it can bring while you sweat every toxin out of your body. But there is so much more that the ancient form can do for you. Indigo Hot Yoga in Raleigh was able to help us break it down and create our top 10 reasons you should pop in to one of their complimentary community classes and try it out for yourself!

1. Yoga has been practiced for 4,000 years The Barkan Method, which Indigo Hot Yoga teaches, is a style of Hatha yoga, while also integrating many other styles. Hatha yoga began in Calcu a, India and is the type of Yoga most common in Western society.

fine intimate apparel, fashion lingerie, bridal lingerie, sleepwear, loungewear, hosiery, bath and body products and more.

2. It’s an awesome alternati e for cardio. The rooms are 105 degrees and 40-45% humidity. Due to this increase in temperature, your heart rate is higher and therefore burning more calories. Indigo has customers losing up to 1,000 calories in one Vinyasa class, so you can go for that extra slice of pumpkin pie.

3. It’s everywhere! Recently, hot yoga has become popular in Western cultures and due to the expansion, is much more accessible. Indigo Hot Yoga has many different kinds of classes including Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, and Hot Salutes. So, you can choose the best kind of class for you and your body.

8111-149 Creedmoor Road North Raleigh • 919-307-8306

4. It has the possibility to help illnesses. With consistency, hot yoga has the potential to eliminate stress, anxiety, depression, and other disorders. In addition, practice can aid in the healing of injuries, and even preventi n. The breathing techniques involved can also be beneficial for those with asthma.

5. It’s more than a physical workout. Yoga postures, or asanas, work your body both internally and externally. Your heart, spleen, kidneys, liver, and intestines will all feel improvement. It can also strengthen your joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

6. It’s not just the heat, it’s also the humidity. Some hot studios only use heat, but the trick is the perfect combination of humidity (45%) and heat (55%). Indigo Hot Yoga blends in humidity to help open up the bronchial tubes, improve the quality of the breath and relieve sinus pressure. The increased heat allows your body to elongate and work differently.

7. You’ll be amazed by your new flexibility. Can’t touch your toes? No worries. With practice the added warmth helps to stretch and strengthen your muscles and the added flexibility will come naturally. This not only helps your form, but also other physical sports in which you may be involved.

8. You’ll feel rejuvenated. A er you finish your 45-75 minute class, you will not only feel more physically fit and balanced, but you will notice a difference on a spiritual level. Most people experience an inner calmness.

9. It’s a detox free of the spa. You sweat a lot in hot yoga. And you don’t want to wipe your sweat off until a er class. It is how your body cools itself off and rids yourself of the toxins underneath the skin.

10. Everyone can give it a go!

One of the greatest aspects of hot yoga is that there is no ideal body type. You can be tall or peti e, young or able to get the senior discount, and you definitely don’t need to be competi e. The classes are for you and you alone. Go at your own pace and listen to your body. You should enter the studio about 15 minutes before class is set to begin, so your body can acclimate to the temperature of the room before physical ac vity. In addi on, it is best not to eat for a good 2 hours before class, but don’t go on an empty stomach, either. If you feel dizzy, lie down or go back to child’s pose, but it is best to stay in the room. A er class is over, wipe yourself dry before leaving the room, so your body does not go into shock when hittin the cold air conditioning. A final tip is to only sip on water during the class; you want to hydrate yourself before and a er. A good way to replace lost electrolytes a erwards is to drink Gatorade or natural coconut water.

My hands are beginning to show signs of age and it’s really bothering me. I have age spots and my veins are much more noticeable. Is there anything I can do to reverse the aging process? -  Renee There are several options for minimizing and in many instances eliminating brown hyperpigmentation spots all together. I recommend going the laser route, which may cost more than some other less effective options (for hands you are probably looking at around $150$300 per laser treatment), but the results are far more dramatic. I find BBL or IPL laser treatments work the best, particularly for dark spots on hands which tend to be more stubborn than treating spots on the face. The thing that's nice about BBL or IPL is you typically see great results after just one treatment. Once you have eradicated the age spots, you may start to focus on the vascularity issues seen on the top of your hands. As we age, the skin on our hands starts to thin out. Hands can be brought back to a more youthful state with RADIESSE® Hands. RADIESSE® Hands is the first and only FDA-approved filler indicated for hand augmentation to correct volume loss in hands, providing naturallooking results that can last up to 1 year. These painless injections (RADIESSE® Hands contains a topical numbing agent to reduce the feel of the injection) provide a plumping effect to hands, which minimize the appearance of unsightly veins. For maximum results, I recommend doing BBL, then waiting a week before receiving the RADIESSE® Hands treatment. And always be sure you’re using a broadspectrum SPF to protect your hands from any future sun damage.

“The Giving Key” It All Began With A Hotel Room Key That Would Change Lives.

Actress and singer/songwriter, Caitlin Crosby, started wearing the hotel key as a necklace while on tour and had the idea to start engraving old, used keys with inspirational words. Realizing that, in a way, we are all like these keys – unique, flawed, scarred, and sometimes discarded by others – she wanted these keys to have their purpose renewed over and over again.” This holiday season, embrace your word, then pay it forward to a person you feel needs the message as well. TRIANGLE TRENDS Making Use Of Your Old Fur

The furriers with Douglas Hertzberg Montaldo's (DHM) Furs know how important it is to have fashion that can evolve with trends. Their furriers excel at making any garment into a fashion forward piece, for furs that fit any lifestyle.

Turn that old fur coat into a fashionable new vest. Perhaps a cozy blanket or even a sheared reversible fur garment! Or, give your treasured fur a new life as a home accessory. A full length coat can be transformed into a fabulous fur blanket, a chic throw or even a luxurious fur rug. Fur is natural and recyclable and is one of the few clothing materials that can be re-styled. Recycling furs is great for the environmentally conscious consumer and it is the perfect way to hold onto a sentimental heirloom. Any fur in good condition can be transformed into something one-of-akind and unique. The options are limitless.

Wri en By Stephanie Finucane Owner of The Right Hue, LLC •

I have a thing for color. Not just any color, but how color fits into our space. Where we live, work and play. It affects you more that you might think.

The Right Hue, LLC Color Consultant | Certified Restyler

As a color consultant, there's nothing that gives me greater sati faction than finding the right hue for my clients. Yep, that's not only the name of my business, but it's my mantra. Why not live and work in a space that inspires? What I’ve learned about selecting paint colors over the years is simple: It's all about the mood. As trippy, hippy as that may sound, color alters mood. Walk into an airy room then step into another room, darker and more colorful, and see if you don’t notice a shift in our mood. So...take a look around your space. Is it time for a change? Are you inspired? Over the years, I’ve discovered some favorites that never fail to disappoint. It’s hard to narrow down ten paint colors, but I stand by these choices. They have made many a client smile over the years, not to mention, I kind of lo e them, too. And now, in no particular order….here are my ten favorites from Benjamin Moore paints:

• (1) Revere Pewter HC-172 with (2) Linen White trim. This classic, elegant and soothing gray/beige and cream color combinatio works in just about any room, but I especially like it in hallways and foyers (it’s a smart choice if you’re planning to sell your house). Much be er than those builder beiges that have been known to incite insanity among home dwellers. Linen White is the perfect

complement to RP. It's so creamy. My favorite trim color. Ever.

offices, kitchen cabinets or a study. It pairs beautifully with Linen Whi e or Cloud White.

• (3) Quiet Moments, 1563. Talk about soothing! Hands down, a tried and tested winner. Just the perfect, peaceful color for bedrooms and bathrooms. Paint it on the ceiling. A bit less jarring than glaring white. For that crisp, clean look, pair with White Dove trim. Or so en it up with Linen White trim.

• (5) Fresh Bu er, 290. Melts my heart, just like bu er. So warm, inviting and homey. Perfect for a kitchen or a bathroom. A room with lots of natural light. Fla ers all skintones. Start your day off with a smile. Yellow warms the spirit.

• (4) Horizon Gray 2141-50. A fantastic gray/green paint that will make any room in the home look welcoming and elegant all at once. Perfect for home

• (6) Azore, AF-495. For those old dressers or tables, big or small, this mint green is the coolest paint color. It gives life to an old wooden piece. Your friends will stop and ask the name of the paint color. I promise you. Talk about a transformer!

• (7) Eternity, AF-695. This is that airy blue-gray paint that never ceases to please. It's probably a favorite among my clients. It's not too blue, not too gray. It's just right and it feels like it could go on forever. Hence the name, eternity.

• (8) Simply White, OC117 This is the cleanest and warmest off-white. off-white, without looking sterile. White paint is hot. And this white nails it. There’s a reason Benjamin Moore has named it their 2016 Color of the Year. Use it on cabinets and trim or any wall in the house. No limits here. Let us not forget the beauty of rich, saturated colors. They have their place. Especially for those ti y rooms like the laundry room, a small study or powder room. (9) Orange Parrot, 216920 and (10) Chelsea Gray, fit that bill, and then some. For a serious statement, go with these kind of intense colors from floor to ceiling. You'll turn that drab, little powder room into a fab, little powder room. Go with polished nickel hardware and silvery-framed mirror and a small chandelier. These rooms are always begging for a little ention! It’s so hard to limit it to ten colors, but this a good start. If you need assistance, just reach out. I drive. :) Next time, I’ll share some tips about furniture placement and using what you already have in the home. It's going to give "home shopping" a whole new meaning. ☺ TS

LOVE IT OR LIST IT COUNTS ON SEW FINE IIFOR CUSTOM WINDOW TREATMENTS Durham’s very own Sew Fine II had the honor of being featured on HGTV’s hit show, Love it or List it. The episode, “Mid Century Maternity,” originally aired on September 28, but will run again if you missed it. We let Paula Fullerton dish all about meeting the celebrity host and whether she would have loved or listed the featured home. The design firm of 27 years had already provided window treatments in three previous episodes for homes in Apex, Durham, and Raleigh. “We provided two large, working Roman shades as well as

three pairs of unlined ripplefold traversing draperies in the Apex home, four Roman shade valances in a kitchen in Durham, and two operable Roman shades in a bathroom renovation in North Raleigh. As the network prepared for the episode “Mid Century Maternity,” Big Coat Productions contacted Sew Fine II to see if they would be again be interested in working with the show. “They asked if we would provide custom window treatments” Paula explained. The crew was pleased to accept the invitation.

For their part on “Mid Century Maternity,” the Sew Fine II team created and installed three pairs of sheer ripple-fold draperies. The largest one, 250 inches in width, was installed on an architectural drapery rod in the master bedroom. Two smaller versions were installed in the master bathroom vanity. The team used seamless Kravet fabric for the draperies. Also provided and installed was a Hunter Douglas weather resistant screen shade in the master bath’s shower. We asked if Paula has had the chance to meet Hilary or David. “I’ve met with Hilary [Farr] and she’s a dynamo!” she exclaimed. “I met to discuss the project scope and work through her assistant, Jenny, who is often seen on the show with Hilary.” So what about the home? “I would have loved this home!” Paula gushed. “It’s on the National Register of Historic Places, and has an amazing mid-century modern style.” TS

FOR A CAUSE Fashion and charity teamed up at C.T. Weekends when Lisette Limoges and Kathryne Small, the mother/ daughter duo behind Lisette Pants, visited Raleigh during a brief tour promoting their ankle-length “magic pants.” The pair spent two days in the Triangle, and for every pair of pants tried on during the tour, the designer and store gave matching donations of $1 each to InterAct, a non-profit organization actively providing safety and support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

CAMERON VILLAGE 437 Daniels St., Raleigh (919) 787-9073

Not only does the nonprofit offer safety and support to victims of abuse, it also promotes violence-free relationships and communities through collaboration, public information, education, and advocacy. It is the only confidential domestic violence prevention program serving Wake County’s twelve municipalities Lisette makes ankle-length magic pants—available in an array of colors and prints—that are wrinkle-proof, button-zipper - and pocket-free, and are strategically constructed for ultimate slenderizing fit. They’re made by women for women to help them love how they feel.

During their visit to C.T. Weekends, Lisette and Kathryne showed that mothers and daughters really can share the same pants—and both rock them! They dressed three women from InterAct in Lisette pants and tops, allowing each of the women to keep the clothes after modeling them. The vote was unanimous—we all agree with Oprah that these pants are amazing. We loved them too—both the pants and the women! Lisette and Kathryne were incredibly warm and open and everyone who came by that day had fun shopping and supporting a great cause.

Women came in and had fun, enjoyed refreshments, and got to try on clothes all while helping a good cause. Best of all, they raised money for InterAct, a charity C.T. Weekends has helped raise money for in the past.

With so many beauty products on the market, knowing which ones we really need can be tricky. One thing you’ll definitely want to keep in your routine is a night cream. Catching all eight hours of beauty sleep each night is great, but adding this one step to your bedtime ritual will leave you glowing by morning. Night creams add extra hydration to your skin, as they tend to be a little richer than daytime creams. Also, some antiaging ingredients work best at night because they can cause skin sensitivity when exposed to sun. Your skin’s natural turnover process is enhanced with the right night cream, helping you better achieve and maintain the results you want. To know how to find the right one, we asked Dr. Boyse from The Skin Renewal Center at Southern Dermatology to tell us everything we need to know.

A night time moisturizer is a good idea for people with normal to dry skin. I would also recommend for women in their thirties and forties to start adding it to their night time regime because their skin starts to have less elasticity.

I like Biocream Riche and Nia 24 Intensive Repair. They are good choices for a night time regime because they both have ingredients to help repair daylight damage and are very emollient. There is also a layer of prescription tretinoin cream which is ideal for overnight and is the most effective anti-aging "night cream."

There are ingredients that are needed during the day, such as sunscreens and anti oxidants, that are not necessary in an overnight moisturizer. You may also be able to tolerate a richer cream at night (while sleeping) because the texture or the shiney appearance won’t be an issue. 4201 Lake Boone Trail • Suite 207 • Raleigh • 919-863-0073 • 64 | triangle style

Over the river and through the woods. To grandmother’s house we go. My dad knows the way to ferry the bay. Through the night and the distant road. Oh my, but it was good to be back. Back to the scent of the cedar trees outside my bedroom window on a cool summer night and back to my grandmother’s kind heart and Victorian ways. And though this may sound a little like Alice in Wonderland, it’s exactly how I felt. I felt a special kind of peace whenever I was with her, as if she were the drum major in a whole parade of ancestors and they were all watching over me. Her stories took me from generation to generation, one more descendant of those hard-working, intelligent men and women who toiled from sunup till sundown, carving out the town’s pretty tree-lined streets out of a rock-filled wilderness. There was barely a street in town that I didn’t imagine my ancestors walking down beside me. Having this sort of relationship with the town of my ancestors and my grandmother is increasingly a thing of the past. Because, for all sorts of reasons, we have become a mobile society, and as a result, families sometimes find themselves scattered hundreds of miles away from each other. That being said, people of my generation generally live longer, healthier lives than those of previous generations, thus traveling long distances to visit their grandchildren, or even moving nearby, is not as foreboding as it once might have been.

Mulling it over, answering a few questions may be helpful in making a decision that’s the right one for you. • Are you considering pulling up stakes, selling your home, and leaving your friends behind in order to live closer to your grandchildren? • If you do move closer, will their parents’ jobs later require them to transfer somewhere else? If so, what will you do? Will you follow them? • Are home prices where they live now higher than you can afford?

• Do you want to simply spend more time with your grandchildren or do you want to take a more active part in their lives? Have you talked this over with their parents? • Will you be able to make new friends or find things to do nearby? • Is public transportation readily accessible? • If your grandchildren live far apart from each other, what should you do? What if you don’t want to give up your home, longtime friends, or the activities you enjoy? • Would you rather stay where you now live and make frequent trips to visit your grandchilren instead? • If so, how often do you want to visit and how long do you want to stay? Would booking a hotel room nearby work best for you? • Would you will be willing to change planes along the way if nonstop flights aren’t available? • Does your budget make frequent trips possible? • How will you maintain a close relationship with your grandchildren if traveling becomes something you can no longer do by yourself nor as often? Will you read them stories or talk with them on facetime? Text message? Play scrabble, or some other game online with them?

Is there another choice? • Have you considered renting a condo close to your grandchildren while, at the same time, keeping the home where you live right now? • Can you afford to do both? • In the meantime, will you make the home where you live now into one more suitable for “living in place” in the event neither traveling frequently nor changing locations turns out to be a good choice for you in the long run? • What will you do if the day comes that you find yourself living alone? On the other hand do you have your heart set on spending your retirement years in an adult community, playing golf, entertaining, or traveling to different places around the world? • If so, have you considered treating your grandchildren to a vacation with you? • If the day comes that you are no longer able to care for yourself, will you move closer to your adult children? The questions above are ones I ask myself, as one of my daughters moved to New Jersey, another to Chicago, and the third to North Carolina. What choice have I made? For now, I rent a condo near one and fly back and forth to the others.

We asked a few longstanding stores in the Triangle to share stories and advice from their many years in business. Here’s what they shared!

Celebrating 15 Years WHAT IS ONE THING THAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST ABOUT AT EASE IN THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS? At Ease started out as a "boutique" department store. We had everything from furniture to unique toys to women's clothes. The clothes took off.

THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE GIVEN? The best advice I received was from my husband—he said don't overstock the store. I guess I don't take advice well. BEST SELLING PRODUCT OVER THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS:

In 2001, after the September 11 attacks, sales really slowed down. I bought a small novelty item—"magic" scarves. They may be passé now, but I sold thousands (yes, thousands!) of them. They pulled me through the slump. Great scarves continue to be a major part of our inventory.

MOST MEMORABLE CUSTOMER: A customer was going to a family event her ex was also attending. We did a head to toe makeover. She came by the store after the event as I was closing. She hopped out of a car and struck a pose—she looked great. I asked, “Who's in the car?” She said, "My ex." ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A NEW BUSINESS STARTING OUT: Have enough capital to

operate for one year without taking a paycheck.

THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE GIVEN: Always be honest. If you are honest with people, your business will grow. Word of mouth is everything.

BEST SELLING PRODUCT OVER THE YEARS: Diamond engagement rings. We give people great value, and always have, to generations of customers. My father developed a great reputation in this area, and I have been fortunate enough to sell to those customers’ children when they get engaged. It is a good feeling knowing you can take care of customers for life and they tell their friends and family about you. ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A NEW BUSINESS STARTING OUT: Be passionate about what you are doing. It will reflect on you and your business every day. Also be patient, which is easier said than done.

You might not feel like going to the gym today, but your Facebook friends can remind you of the promise you made to work out a minimum of 3 to 4 times a week. You might think you need that drink or that cigarette, but your online friends can remind you of your vow to finally become a nonsmoker. If you need more encouragement to meet your New Year's resolution goal, you can join any number of groups designed specifically for the purpose. There are plenty of online social media

groups - each dedicated to a specific goal. If you want to shed 30 pounds, you can find a support group filled with men and women struggling to reach their weight loss goals. If you want to get better with money, you can find a group full of people sharing money-saving tips, investment ideas and other great resources. If you want to stop smoking, you can find an online support group to complement your efforts and make your goal easier to meet. You do not have to be one of the millions of Americans who fail to meet your New Year's resolutions this year. Good intentions will help you get started, but it is a good idea to have help when the newness of going to the gym or starting a saving jar starts to wear off. Having your social media friends in your corner can help you make it through the hardest part of your New Year's resolutions and finally meet your long sought after goals.

THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN Based upon the Raj Quartet novels, this Emmy-award Masterpiece miniseries was remastered and made available for online streaming this year. Lavish, sensual, and sometimes disturbing, it is set in 1940s India, when the English rule was coming to an end and the move for Indian independence was gaining momentum.

In the midst of it all is the story of Daphne Manners, an awkward, careless young Englishwoman, and the two men who love her: Hari Kumar, an Indian journalist who was brought up in upper-class England and educated in one of its best schools; and Ronald Merrick, a rigid Police Inspector who resents him. MRS. MINIVER, honored as one of the top 400 films of all time by the American Film Institute and winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, and Script, the film is set in an idyllic English village immediately before the beginning of WWII. As the film opens, the Minivers are what you would call a stable, loving, middle class family who happen to live in a very nice house. Mr. Miniver is an architect in the city and Mrs. Miniver’s role is to be his loving wife and a dedicated mother to their children.

But when war begins, that way of life abruptly changes. Now, instead of lovely family dinners in the dining room upstairs, Mrs. Miniver and her children huddle in their basement below, terrified of the screeching German planes dropping bombs nearby. Somehow Mrs. Miniver summons up a strength she didn’t know she had, facing hardships and a downed German pilot who wanders into her kitchen with a gun while her husband is part of the Dunkirk Evacuation brigade. And though it would be understandable for Mrs. Miniver to cave under such trying circumstances, including a son lost in the war, she instead leads her family in their effort to carry on with good humor and grace.
