AND

KEEP BUY TOSS Ever feel like you are

drowning under a sea of same old, same old clothing? The good news is it is possible to thin your wardrobe and still have plenty to wear. And we show you how.

They say the average woman owns seven pairs of blue jeans. I say ‘is that all?’ If you’re anything like me, then you’ll find an article of clothing you like and go to town with it – ten pairs of jeans, about a dozen sweaters, the same amount of black pants…you get the idea. So you see, I do understand what you’re going through and I am here to help. Here are a few handy tips to keep in mind when you wonder about which style to keep, which new trend to buy and which to avoid or purge from your wardrobe. WRITTEN BY SARAH YOUNG

GET KNITTING

A unique women's boutique.

Pullovers, cardigans, wraps, sweater vests – there are many ways to wear knits but which ways will keep you warm for years to come?

We specialize in

• KEEP – Let us all rejoice, the twinset is back. Wear it with a pair of jeans, or with any pants, and you look great. Add a funky bracelet or two and some necklaces and you can drag the twinset kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Horizontal stripes on knitwear always look good too. Like the twinset, they can be worn with anything and in any style – cardigan, crew neck, round neck, turtleneck, v-neck. • BUY – This season is gray, apparently. And while it may not be the most exciting of colors, it actually covers a wide palette of shades – charcoal, pewter, silver gray and fog gray, for example. It also looks great with black – they complement each other brilliantly. Little knitted jackets are everywhere at the moment and make a great alternative when it’s too cold for short sleeves but not cold enough for a jacket. Choose a style with three-quarter length sleeves and wear with a long sleeved top and plenty of bangles for interest. • TOSS – If you still have a ski sweater, then you really need to clear out your wardrobe. If you have sweaters knitted by your great aunt with a puppy dog on the front, then shame on you! Other than that, the knitwear world is your oyster – even batwing sleeves!

T-SHIRT OFF YOUR BACK

Beloved of rock stars and the Hollywood hip, t-shirts are a staple of everyone’s wardrobe, whether you’re wearing one proclaiming the name of your favorite band or some pithy witticism, whether it’s a sunglasses-bright white tee, or even just something to wear underneath your plaid shirt for a day digging the garden. • KEEP – Plain t-shirts in good condition should be kept hold of. They can be worn underneath a casual shirt to give you a bit of warmth, and they can funk up a pair of pants that might normally be a bit staid. Long sleeved t-shirts are also a boon if you just can’t think of anything to wear. Just think, pair a black, long-sleeved t-shirt

(think Gap) with a pair of wide-legged black pants, throw a chunky knit jacket with ¾ length sleeves over the top and voila, you’re good to go! • BUY – If you can afford it, you could do a lot worse than buy some really good quality tees for your wardrobe from somewhere like Ralph Lauren or American Apparel. They’ll look great with everything and last well if you look after them. If you’re not a fan of thrift shops then the new ‘destroyed’ look gives you that cool ‘rocker’ look but from a new t-shirt. • TOSS – Few items of clothing have been used and abused more than the t-shirt. Let me put it to you plainly—if you’re a lady of more generous proportions, DO buy a t-shirt that fits you, DON’T buy a t-shirt that could fit one and a half of you in. It won’t fool anyone and will just make you look shapeless.

BACK IN BLACK (PANTS)

Far be it from me to tell you to throw out your favorite pair of pants, but if you have an abundance of pairs, then it’s time to get ruthless. Well-fitted, well-tailored plain black pants will never go out of style and can be as at home when you’re at work as they are dressed up for an evening out.

• KEEP – Wider-legged pants. That’s right, the same as the blue jeans. Try to avoid hipsters, waist height is a must, and ALWAYS wear a belt, whether you’re dressing up or down. They’re a style that come and go regularly, so do yourself a favor and get a pair now – you’ll be wearing them for years. • BUY – Wider-legged pants. That’s right, the same as the blue jeans. If I can be frank with you, they make you look like you’re wearing a diaper. And let’s be honest, ladies, that is NOT a good look!

PUT YOUR SHIRT ON IT

One of the most versatile pieces in any lady’s wardrobe, a good blouse can work with many different outfits in many different situations.

And finally, I heard a great tip once for purging your wardrobe. Take everything out and put them into three piles – definitely keep, maybe keep and definitely ditch. Then put the ‘definitely keep’ pile back in the wardrobe and take the ‘definitely ditch’ pile to the nearest charity thrift shop. Oh, and while you’re there, give them your ‘maybe keep’ pile too. If it’s something you’re not sure about keeping, you’re probably not going to wear it again. TS

• KEEP – Buttoned-down shirts made the transition from men’s to women’s wardrobes a long time ago and there’s a good reason. They look great, wear great and, if you buy a good one, they will last a long time. Keep hold of ballet-style wrap blouses. They work really well with smart pants or something more casual and are fantastically flattering with a large chest. A couple of white blouses are a must, but keep the odd brightly colored shirt in there too. A bright red shirt can give a black suit an amazing pop of color. • BUY – Country-style blouses are great – think Laura Ashley, think delicate ruffles, think non-fussy embroidery detail on the yoke. But make sure they are straight cut, otherwise they’ll be edging into smock territory (see below). Oversized shirts are making a comeback and with the right outfit can look great. Pair them with a pair of leggings or skinny jeans (if you have the legs) and cinch in with a wide belt. • TOSS – Step away from the smock top. It is gone; it is a style that we are done with. It flattered nobody except maybe Elle MacPherson and just made the rest of us look pregnant whether we were or not. Let us resign smock tops happily to the bin of fashion history.

Most of the time, the picture you bring in to your stylist boasting the model with the perfect hair Half Up Half Down In 5 Minutes. 1) Start by sectioning the hair around your crown area and teasing it a bit for height. 2) Keeping the tease area up and out of the way, pull the sides back into one little pony tail. 3) Drop the top over the little ponytail then twist and secure with a bobby pin. 4) Curl the back hair in 3-4 sections, and forward to the left of right side. 5) Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray and smile; your done.

Crewneck This type of neckline is very casual, but it can also be dressed up with the right accessories, including a great necklace. A collar or a bib necklace is a great choice! These are short and close to the neck so that they do not overwhelming your neckline or the shirt you are wearing. A small, delicate, short chain with a subtle pendant, like a cross no larger than a nickel, will also work well with this neckline. Turtle Neck This is an interesting neckline because it covers the neck completely, but you can still find an ideal necklace that will work well with this neckline. You will want to look for a longer necklace so that it complements the turtle neck and does not get lost in the fabric. Small necklaces and short necklaces will get lost on the neck when you are wearing a turtle neck, so stick with a longer chain boasting a larger pendant or a thick chain donning over-sized, faceted jewels like quartz and amber, which are the hot trend right now!

Scoop Neck A scoop neck exposes a lot of area so you can take advantage of this space and sport a statement necklace. This type of necklace is thicker and heavier, such as a necklace with multiple strands. Layers of chains or large links are hot right now and this design is perfect for testing out trends! Take risks with this neckline and have fun with it to fill in your extra "skin space". Strapless Neck When you are wearing a strapless shirt, you are baring your decolletage so you can use necklaces to play up this area. Short pendants and collar necklaces work very well if you want to keep the area bare, but if you want to fill it in, you can wear a necklace with multiple strands or a necklace with larger beads - turquoise or coral bib necklaces are taking over necklines everywhere and this collar style is the ideal design for this trend.

Square Neck This is a very angular neckline so look for a necklace that has an angular pendant. This will maintain that unique look and help to accent it. You can also go in the opposite direction and create contrast by using a rounded pendant on a thin, delicate chain for example. Asymmetric Neck This is a neckline that you want to match the necklace so that your look does not become unbalanced. Look for a necklace that is also asymmetric, such as a necklace with layered strands, created with different sized chains, made with different materials. Twisted pearls and multiple chains are the killer combo this season!

Halter Neck When you wear a halter neck, you will show a very narrow "V" neckline so look for a pendant that complements this shape. An arrow or an upside down triangle hanging from a short chain or a bib necklace will work very well and create an air of mystery without over powering. Collared Neck If you are wearing a shirt with a collar that is buttoned up, there is not a lot of room for a necklace, but some styles will still work. A thin choker can add a little edge to your look, or you can soften this space with a thin chain with a small pendant that hangs close to your neck. Boat Neck This is an interesting neck line and you can play it up - so get creative! Try a long necklace that is strung with small to mid-sized beads. You can also combine two of these necklaces in various colors that match your shirt, creating a fun contrast. Cowl Neck This neckline has volume and is very detailed so stick with something small so that it does not distract. You want a small pendant on a small,

TSM WinterNecklaces13revised:TSM Beauty Myths

short chain so that you decorate the area, but do not overwhelm it.

Sweetheart Neck This is one of the most popular necklines at the moment because it is flirty and feminine. Look for a wide, curved necklace that will balance your bare decolletage well and help to fill it in a bit. Try out hammered gold or silver chest plate design.

Round Neck This neckline is seen in many of the latest dress styles and on more sophisticated T-shirts. You want a necklace that will follow the shape of the neck and sit just below it. Do not go too short or else the necklace may slip into the shirt and not be seen. A thin strand of pearls to dress it up or a simple monogrammed charm work perfectly with this line. Plunging Neck Sexy and fierce necklines, but your necklace should not be quite as daring since you do not want to distract from this design. Choose a small and delicate necklace that is not bright in color. You simply want to add a subtle decoration to draw the eye, because this neckline speaks for itself. V Neckline This neckline elongates the neck so you want to take advantage of it and really play it up! A small bib necklace or a long chain with a large pendant work very well with this look because your neck will remain elongated. This will also draw attention to this area, so that people will notice your accessories without getting in trouble!

As an NC State graduate and Raleigh native, fashion designer

Justin LeBlanc made us proud as a finalist on Season 12 of Project Runway! Justin currently works as an Assistant Professor at NC State’s School of Design and reflects on his experience with Project Runway. WHAT WAS THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT BEING ON PROJECT RUNWAY? I did have my idea about the show before going on. I was not a huge fan of Project Runway because, as a professor, I’m always about the quality of work. I did nitpick about the previous season, how they made garments that were not lined, but now that I was on the show, I can appreciate what goes on because the time constraint is incredible. One of the biggest surprises to me was to see how talented the other designers were and how passionate they were on the set - it was exciting! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHALLENGE AND WHY? Of course the final runway show at New York Fashion Week was my ultimate favorite, but in the duration of the show, my favorite was the Super Fan challenge, where we had to make a garment for a Project Runway fan. I like working for a specific client, and I was thrilled that I was able to make her happy with the dress that she wore. That’s definitely a win in my book because I am always about making people happy.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF HAVING BELK PROVIDE THE ACCESSORIES FOR THE SHOW AND WAS THERE EVER A CHALLENGE WHERE A BELK ACCESSORY REALLY MADE AN OUTFIT FOR YOU? Using the Belk accessories wall always gave me the chance to enhance the garment even more. And just the fact that Belk is from North Carolina made it even more personal for me, because its my home state. They always had interesting accessories for us to use. For the Bowtie challenge and the Belk challenge, I used the Belk accessories because the look would be too plain without it. I’m not the kind of person to take a big piece and put it on, because its the little things that can make all the difference. I was glad to find out that Belk was sponsoring the season.

SHADES OF DANHIER Magnificent jewelry from Christophe Danhier, dazzling in diamonds and sapphires.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? I came to NC State to get my architecture degree, for my undergrad, and I think that has influenced my design aesthetic, because in my work I am very minimalistic and there’s an architectural element to what I make. When I’m designing, I also tend to look at other artists. One of the artists that I look to is Iris Van Harpen. She’s a Swedish fashion designer but I consider her an artist because she makes these gorgeous garments using unconventional materials, which brings it to a whole other level. HOW HAS BEING FROM RALEIGH INFLUENCED YOUR WORK? My design aesthetic has changed over time depending on where I am living, I lived in Chicago for almost four years and for some reason my aesthetic was completely different over there, but I moved back here and its changed. I can’t really pinpoint what it is, but living in the South definitely influenced my design aesthetic in the way that I am not polarized like the people in New York or another big city. Here, I am able to identify my own interests, and not do the follow-the-leader thing . HOW DID BEING DEAF AFFECT YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN? Being deaf has made me a very tactile person. Because I am not able to hear, I rely on sight a lot more, and I’m all about texture and form and different kinds of manipulation that can enhance anything – art, garments, installations, so forth. It definitely has a big impact on me, its who I am and I want to translate that into what I make.

TWO OF JUSTIN'S LOOKS FOR THE FINALE SHOW AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK. This gown is made out of hundreds of tiny plastic test tubes complete with 3-D printed shoulder-pieces. With sound waves going down the front, this dress references Justin's path to hearing.

DID BEING DEAF HELP YOU ON THE SHOW OR DID IT MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT? It helped me because I was able to block out all the drama. It worked to my advantage because I came on the show to design, not to be a part of their bickering. It did come to a disadvantage because people would be talking across the room in the studio space and I was not able to catch that because it tended to be more than two people talking at the same time. I understand when one person is talking, but when more people are talking I’m lost. At the beginning of the show it was difficult for me to get to know the others, but as the group got smaller it got easier.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER ARTIST WITH DISABILITIES? My best advice is to work really, really hard because there will be people out there who will question your capability. Perfection from Vivi, Firenze

HOW HAS PROJECT RUNWAY CHANGED YOUR LIFE? I’m still the same old person, the same old professor, but in a way, Project Runway has led me to become even more motivated and become more passionate in the field of fashion. I feel that Project Runway has allowed me to make a statement that I’ve been trying to make for a long time. Now, its just a stepping stone, and there will be a lot more opportunity in the future. I don’t know what that is yet, but it was a good experience for me and I’m happy I did it. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN FOR THE FUTURE? I’m still going to teach at State. I’m excited to be a Faculty Advisor this year for the 13th annual NCSU Art2Wear show in April. It’s a student-run fashion show, where I myself put on my very first runway show when I was a student. I’m also working on my Fall/Winter collection . I applied for Charleston Fashion Week, and I don’t know if I got in yet. I have always wanted to show there, it’s a great show. I’m just going to keep designing and hopefully continue to inspire other people.

THE BELK ACCESSORIES WALL

Bags, shoes and jewelry from Belk graced the famed “Accessories Wall” during Season 12 of Project Runway, yet another nod to the great fashion North Carolina has to offer! John Thomas of Belk shared a little more about the partnership that made this season’s accessories choices better than ever. IN WHAT WAYS WAS BELK THE PERFECT MATCH FOR PROJECT RUNWAY? We, Belk, felt that Project Runway was a great opportunity to extend our message of modern, southern, style, especially after our own efforts this past year with Southern Designer Showcase. The aspect of design and fashion is very important to our brand, hence a great partnership.

HOW DID BELK GO ABOUT CHOOSING THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES FOR THE FAMED ACCESSORIES WALL? The merchant team worked extremely hard to curate an assortment of shoes, bags, and jewelry, that represented the fashion and value our customers know Belk for. We wanted to have great looking products that were fashionable, design driven, and available in our local Belk stores and belk.com. WHAT DID YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES THINK OF THE DESIGNERS' INTERPRETATIONS OF "MODERN SOUTHERN STYLE" FOR THE BELK CHALLENGE? The panel was thrilled with the asymmetrical plaid dress Bradon McDonald designed, it was really a show stopper. The really exciting element of the Belk challenge was the “Back to the Work Room” effort for three of the designers. That plot twist generated an amazing dress from Dom Streater, a dress I am very excited to have in the store this spring. We were able to get two winners, which gave us more fashion for our customers. WAS THERE A PARTICULAR INSTANCE DURING THE SEASON WHERE THE BELK ACCESSORIES REALLY MADE AN OUTFIT? I think this season of Project Runway had a lot of great fashion looks and the elements of the Belk accessory wall really added many great finishing touches. In the words of Tim Gunn, I think the designers judiciously used to their advantage all the great looks from Belk.

HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN SINCE PROJECT RUNWAY FEATURED BELK ACCESSORIES? We have had a great response! A lot of people were very intrigued and excited by the “Modern, Southern” challenge, especially the fact that the winning dresses will be available at Belk and belk.com this coming Spring. Also, the fashion message really resonated with our current customers as well as generating new customers to our Belk franchise.

BREAKFAST: I have to admit that mornings start with coffee made in my stove-top espresso maker, with soy creamer--I love the ritual of making it, and I'm crazy about the Counter Culture coffee from La Farm Bakery! Then I have a protein shake (Keto Slim by Nature's Way) made with almond milk, and a fuji apple. It's got 25 grams of protein (pea, rice and fermented soy), and with the complex carbs in the apple, keeps me going strong all morning. Other Mornings: When don't want a cold shake, I have a banana or an apple with peanut butter, or toast with avocado. When I skip breakfast, my blood sugar spikes and crashes all day and it's no fun--the people in my Slow Flow class might get something less than slow, if all I have for fuel is caffeine!

MORNING SNACK: My days start very early, so I'm usually starving by 11:00 and have a snack of almonds and a piece of fruit, and peppermint tea, so I can teach my noon Perfect Hour class, and then enjoy my lunch. LUNCH: I don't like to eat a big meal at lunch, because it slows me down--I usually have some kind of salad, either warm or cold, which generally includes steamed (kale or collard) or raw greens, with quinoa, lentils, avocado, walnuts and a crunchy vegetable with olive oil and lemon juice, or Bragg's Aminos. I'll add miso soup on cold days. AFTERNOON SNACK: The afternoon snack is critical, otherwise I get cranky (never good when you're teaching) then at night, I'll graze the entire refrigerator! I generally have something with about 5 grams of protein like half a protein bar, or yogurt, and a piece of fruit. Sometimes home made hummus and raw veggies. Most evenings I teach a spicy Open vinyasa class at 5:45, and this is light but keeps my energy high. Lots of water! DINNER: I'm Greek, so dinner includes a glass of wine, and the mediterranean diet is really my favorite. If I'm craving carbs, I love brown rice pasta with pesto; butternut squash risotto; and have been going crazy over the brussels sprout pizza at Pizzeria Toro, in Durham. EVENING SNACK: A cup of herbal tea before bed. AND ALL THE OTHER CRAVINGS.....

Sweet Tooth Cravings: Croissants (La Farm, again)! Peanut butter and my mom's home made jam, or Dark chocolate. I don't really have a sweet tooth, and am that person who will forego dessert; I can eat one cookie or one bite of chocolate, and be satisfied. My weakness is fried food!

Salt Cravings: French fries, french fries, french fries...

Road Trip Cravings: Pringles, Coca Cola, and...you guessed it--french fries!

EASY STEPS TO GORGEOUS SKIN Our skin is a reflection of our overall health. So what can you do to improve yours? Good genetics help, but there are a number of other factors you can control like: getting 7-9 hours of sleep regularly, practicing good nutrition, avoiding tobacco and alcohol products, and developing a good skin regimen. Margaret B. Boyse, MD of Southern Dermatology works with the latest, most comprehensive medical and cosmetic dermatologic care. Her office provides adult and pediatric dermatology as well as comprehensive diagnosis of skin conditions and diseases including skin cancer and skin renewal, and she spoke with us about how to keep our face looking fabulous.

What are the basics of good skin care? How can we get healthy skin and a beautiful complexion?

The keys are fairly basic:

Step 1 - gentle cleansing; Step 2 - exfoliation; Step 3 - moisturizing; Step 4 - sun protection.

Margaret B. Boyse, MD Southern Dermatology

With over 10 years experience, Dr. Boyse is a local board certified dermatologist. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the North Carolina Medical Society. Dr. Boyse specializes in fillers for lip augmentation and fine lines, BOTOX速 and fractionated laser resurfacing. 56 | triangle style

Acne results from a clogging of the oil glands under the skin, and a poor diet only exacerbates the problem. Nourishing fruits and vegetables will make your whole body feel better and improve your skin tone as well. Fine lines and brown spots are almost entirely due to years of UV light, so sun avoidance and sunblock protection will help prevent this.

How do over the counter treatments compare to professional brands? Over the counter sunblock containing zinc oxide (such as Cetaphil SPF 50 Daily Facial Moisturizer) is just as effective as professional brands and moisturizers such as Elta MD. Vitamin C is an antioxidant; wearing on the skin during daylight hours helps combat damage caused by UV radiation – helping prevent and reverse fine lines, brown patches and even early pre-cancers. Niacin (Vitamin B3) also works well. I would invest more money in professional brand antioxidants such as ReACTIVE by NeoCutis or CE Ferulic by SkinCeuticals. For exfoliation, I think the NIA24 Serum is effective and yet very mild. I recommend this skin care line often as an antioxidant because B3 is better tolerated by most people. It’s not going to cause the redness, itching or burning that some get with Vitamin C. And the “24” stands for 24-hour release which is a unique property of this product. I would also recommend springing for prescription Renova or Tazorac as anti-aging retinoids rather than over the counter Retinol. Retinoids slow the breakdown of collagen in the dermis, and collagen loss is the cause of fine lines/wrinkles. OTC’s are not FDA regulated, may not be as effective, and can be more irritating to the skin.

True or False All chemicals in products are bad? False. Consumers are going green and trying to choose natural, organic products, but that doesn’t mean all chemicals are bad. Preservatives help prevent the growth of bacteria and other

organisms that can not only change and spoil a product’s effectiveness, but also allow harmful bacteria to reach the skin.

How can women incorporate products that help with the loss of collagen into their everyday routines?

• Sunblock: It protects against UV rays as well as skin cell mutations that occur with chronic UV light – even through a windowpane. Elta MD UV SPF 41 is a tinted facial sunscreen with zinc oxide. The most important part of a beauty regimen is daily sunblock, and this product contains a light, broad-spectrum formula for everyday use. It’s hypoallergenic and gives a light coverage for red and brown spots to boot.

• Antioxidants: They help reduce the oxidative stress on skin cells resulting from UV exposure. NIA24 Intensive Recovery Complex is a rich creamy product delivering intense moisture powered by ceramides and clinical strength

proniacin (Vitamin B3). Its antioxidants firm, tone and tighten skin, thereby reducing fine lines. It also contains brighteners that lift the discoloration due to sun damage.

• Retinoids: These help prevent collagen breakdown. Products like Renova and Tazorac are available by prescription from your dermatologist.

• Growth factors: Which promotes collagen production. Once again, more collagen means better skin with fewer wrinkles. NeoCutis Journee Biorestorative Day Cream containing PSP is the only cream to combine antioxidants and multi-spectrum sun protectants with human growth factors that stimulate fibroblasts to generate more collagen. It guards against premature aging and helps to revitalize your skin. Which is best: fresh faced or made up? Some argue that cosmetics can clog pores and age us prematurely, while other studies show that makeup actually protects us from the sun and wind. I encourage women to wear a mineral makeup such as Jane Iredale or Glo Minerals. They contain a

zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide SPF as well as antioxidants that help improve and protect your skin.

True or False The higher the SPF, the better? False. The wavelengths of light covered by the active ingredient are going to be more important than the SPF once you are using 30 or higher. Look for broad spectrum sunblock containing zinc oxide.

What are some potentially overlooked things women can do to improve their skin tone? A good night’s rest and similar bed/wake time is important, as is eating well. Smart choices include walnuts, salmon, berries, whole grains, and other fruits and veggies – along with limited alcohol and staying hydrated. These things all contribute to looking good as the decades go by.

If a woman came to you wanting a fresher, more youthful and healthy glow in the New Year, what would you recommend?

• Monogramming In House •

Stone Creek Village 406 Ledgestone Way, Cary 919.460.2554 • www.thepinkalli.com

Depending upon her concerns – pigmentation, fine lines, clogged pores – I might recommend a VI Peel to provide deep exfoliation and pigment reduction. If fine lines were her concern then Fraxel Laser Resurfacing would be a good place to start. It also increases collagen, reduces fine lines, and takes several years off the face. I would follow these procedures with a skin care regimen and offer Botox and fillers to further minimize lines.

Where can key products be purchased, and how should they be used? Your dermatologist is a great resource, as well as product websites. A sample regimen might include applying Journee and then ReACTIVE in the morning before doing your makeup. Clean your face well before bed and use NIA24 each evening, followed by prescription Retin A. This combination will decrease fine lines and brown spots while making your skin look more hydrated, light reflective, and with a younger and healthier glow. TS

STYLE SPOTLIGHT

••• LeslieMason••• WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM THE REST? ReViva Baths is a collaboration of Triangle professional designers and contractors. Our process allows the homeowner to choose the style they want at a price they can predict and afford. We simplify remodeling by offering a variety of beautiful already-designed suites that can be adapted to any size or shape bathroom. Each of our contractors is top-tier and in demand, as well as insured. All ReViva baths will meet or exceed current code and be fully permitted with the local municipality. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MYTH YOU FACE WHEN DEALING WITH REMODELS? That a bath remodel should cost less than $10K. Resurfacing perhaps, but a full gut remodel is not possible for that price. People also sometimes believe that because they've watched HGTV, they know enough to do this very complicated work on their own. The value of a seasoned General Contractor simply cannot be overstated. True as well for good design. YOU WORK WITH SEVERAL INTERIOR DESIGNERS CREATING SEVERAL BATHROOM CHOICES. HOW ARE THE LOOKS DIFFERENT? ReViva Bath suites are wide ranging – from contemporary to traditional, earthy,

craftsman, modern, glamorous, classic – and with a variety of color schemes and many more styles to come. Some will price out above $45K, some just $25K-$35K. What makes ReViva designs truly exceptional is that top local professionals get the opportunity to create designs that they love. The results are breathtaking bathrooms, further enhanced with high function, durability, and easy maintenance. All designs are also exclusively licensed to ReViva Baths. BREAK IT DOWN: WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST OF A RENOVATION? The typical range is $15-$85K, and where any project falls on that spectrum depends upon what needs to be updated, how much new infrastructure is needed, what luxe level the final fit and finish will be, and the skill level of the trades and crafts people. FROM START TO FINISH, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A BATHROOM OVERHAUL? A week to update a bath by resurfacing, provided that all materials and workers are available. A full remodel down to the studs, keeping the same plumbing and room footprint: 4-8 weeks. For a project involving new plumbing, new layout, and more (or less) space: anywhere from 8-20+ weeks.

For more on our new approach to bath remodeling, visit revivabaths.com in January to preview suites and see pricing based on the classic 8'x5' room. Reduce the headaches of decision making by simply selecting upgrades to the basic package, like adding a zero threshold, pocket door, wall-hung toilet, and glass enclosure. To get started online, you'll be able to schedule a preliminary meeting with one of our contractors. 60 | triangle style

WHEN OPPOSITES ATTRACT

TIPS FOR BLENDING DIFFERENT STYLES TIP: Choose a neutral rug that won’t overpower the different styles. This rug from Masland Carpets is a great choice. These hand knotted wool rugs are soft and luxurious and have many versatile patterns to choose from.

It has often been said that opposites attract. In the interior design business, I can tell you this is true! Designers are often called upon to help couples and roommates blend furnishings and mediate design choices, With planning and thought, it is possible to have a home that reflects the tastes of all those who dwell in the spaces. When furnishing styles are mixed, the result is called an “eclectic décor”. You can mix family heirloom antiques with mid-Century Modern furnishings! Eclectic decors grab your attention and can be stunning. But the key to a beautiful eclectic décor is proportion and balance. When blending styles, one design style must predominate and the other compliment. When working with couples and room mates, I help them decide on which style predominates by asking how the room will be used. In a room that will be used a good deal, such as the Living Room, then the dominant furnishings must be comfortable as well as beautiful. Seating must A shade that lowers when privacy is needed can be beused ample comfortable to those will use with and drapery panels or valances at that a window. it most. Tables should be large (or small) enough to hold those items intended for them, such as lamps, reading materials, and snacks. Once this decision has been made, furnishings representing the other decorating style to be represented in the room can be introduced. That pretty, but stiff, chair from the beloved aunt can be placed as it will be for occasional use. The antique writing desk can be introduced to hold a lamp or objects of beauty. But don’t overdo the second decorating style in the room. These pieces should be used more sparingly to compliment the predominant furnishing style.

A homeowner can continue this pattern of blending styles in other rooms in the home. A second, or even third, style of furnishings can predominate in subsequent rooms as long as the guidelines of comfort and proportion are used. A room used less often can accommodate furnishings that are not as comfortable as the main living areas. Just add some pieces in the same style of the main living areas as accents in these other rooms, and the dwelling will have a cohesive and rhythmic design flow. As for that recliner with duct tape holding the arms together that is beloved by one member of the family? The decision on where…or if…to use it is much more difficult!

What did you have done? I'm doing Forever Young BBL treatments five times a year (except during the summer months when we have the greatest sun exposure). Immediate results from the treatment are evening out skin tone, repairing broken capillaries, ridding your skin of Melasma, and more. You don't need numbing cream or anything; just go in, get the treatment, and leave. It's a very quick procedure with very little discomfort. What was it about this particular procedure that made you want it? Forever Young delays the skin aging process. The regime is performed over a nine year period in which your skin ages only one year. That's all I needed to hear and I said, “Sign me up, please.” Did it live up to your expectations? I started the process at the beginning of this year and am doing my fourth treatment next week. I have loved the immediate results it has given me so far and there is little down time, if any. You leave the spa with a red face but can apply makeup immediately if you want. For someone considering a procedure for the first time, can you share any words of wisdom? Ask questions! It’s very important. I don’t go to the spa to get pampered, I go for results – and when I first went to Synergy, I had lots of questions. The receptionist turned me over to the owner, and I was extremely impressed with her vast knowledge and true passion for skin care. I later found she had a lot of experience creating skin care products for other lines before Synergy. I was hooked and started using it on my own skin exclusively. The best thing about them is that their clinical approach includes keeping up with cutting edge skin care treatments and techniques.

ask anna Dear Anna, I was given a gift certificate for a massage that, I admit, I have been nervous about redeeming. I am new to the whole spa experience and hope you can answer a few questions. When getting a massage, what is the protocol for dress? I am very shy and don’t know if I feel comfortable about being undressed and would prefer to leave on my clothes. How would you recommend I approach this? Also, when tipping, how much is customary and do I give the tip directly to my masseuse or do I leave it at the desk? There is all sorts of information online, but I want to know about what’s to be expected on the local level. Thanks, Joyce Dear Joyce, Many first-time spa-goers have trepidation about the dos and don’ts of spa-ing. To answer your first question regarding dress attire when receiving a massage--you should disrobe to your comfort level. Depending on the type of massage you are getting-- in most instances, the less clothing you have on the better it is for the therapist to work on certain body parts. Clothing tends to interfere with the flow of the massage unless you are receiving, for example, a Shiatsu or Thai Yoga massage. A well trained professional massage therapist will be able to make you feel comfortable by keeping the lights dim, as well as by draping you with sheets and blankets, leaving only the area he or she is working on exposed. I tend to be modest myself, so whenever I get a massage from a male therapist, I am not familiar with, I leave my underwear on; however with my regular male therapist or with female therapists, I do not. Again, you need to be able to relax and enjoy the massage rather than to be tense about being naked--so undress to your comfort level.

Regarding tipping: I always tell my staff they should not expect a tip, nor should they feel a client is satisfied or dissatisfied based upon how much or how little a tip was left for them. Whereas tipping is customary and very much appreciated by the therapist, it is up to your discretion as to how much you would like to leave. The industry standard for tipping is between ten to twenty percent of the total cost of your services, similar to what you would leave your server when dining out at a restaurant. Most spas allow tips to be left either on a credit card or, if you prefer, in a tip envelope (in which you may write your name and leave cash for your therapist), usually found at the checkout desk. Going to the spa should be fun and relaxing. So to get a feel for the facility, I recommend calling them first and asking a few questions. If they are warm, friendly, and seem happy to answer your questions, then you will most likely have a positive all around experience. Happy spa-ing! aging gracefully Written By Lou Scott

Whenever I found myself floundering around in a general malaise, my mother reminded me to follow this common sense plan to live by: to do: • something for my hands • something for my body • something for my brain • something for my heart • something for my soul • something for my community

feel productive. Even having a drawer filled with ironed napkins and placements has given me immense satisfaction. And I’m not kidding.

It seemed a pretty tall order to me and it is not advice I’ve always followed. Even so, whenever I do, my life seems to take on a sense of balance. So, thank you Mother. Your advice, my children tell me, has helped them as well.

However, doing something for my body has often proved difficult. Although I have no problem with long walks -- even in circles around the inside of my house -- a massage, skin care and a good haircut, well made flattering clothes have often seemed self-indulgent. They really aren’t, though they are certainly not as important as a yearly physical and a healthy diet. For nothing looks quite as good on a person than good health. Taken together, these do wonders for the everyday stresses of ordinary life.

First of all, doing something for my hands has been invaluable. For I’m a natural worrier. But rather than worry, worry, worry, I’ve learned to just do. Cleaning my closet, taking old clothes to Goodwill, making a batch of soup make me

Doing something for my brain is the easiest. For I’ve always liked to read and have generally been willing to try anything new: carpentry, cake decorating, or classes at the local college. They give me back my sense of focus.

To do something for my heart has not always been easy. It entails forgiving others, forgiving myself, trying to put myself in someone else’s shoes and remembering that daily prayer, or mediation, go a long way in developing the me I need to be.

Something for my soul involves supporting the arts, making a donation to a well researched charity, or giving a larger tip than necessary, within reason, to a server or taxi cab driver are lessons in spiritual growth. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a smile on someone else’s face or to realize that I may have made someone’s day a little brighter. Finally doing something for my community gives me a sense of purpose. Giving time is the key to this one. Attending city council meetings, making visits to a shut-in or a wellplaced phone call are examples. Further, saying thank you for my blessings and remembering ways to help those who would like the same kind of blessings in their lives have become blessings in themselves. In the final analysis, I’ve found it is possible to do too much, to have a dizzying amount of things to do on my plate. Sometimes this has worn me out to the point that it is detrimental to my health -- which in the end helps no one. To take stock of my priorities and to have an afternoon nap have been good reminders. Nonetheless, taken together, in moderation, all the above make a common sense code to live by, and even though my mother is no longer with me, I find it extremely helpful to keep her advice clearly in focus on my how-to-live-well radar screen.

EVERYDAY ELEGANCE

PHYLLO TARTS

I love cooking with phyllo dough. Delicious layers of flaky dough laced with butter become the perfect canvas for tempting combinations of cheese mixed with savory or sweet ingredients. Savory tarts paired with a salad make a perfect light lunch. Serve sweet tarts with a scoop of ice cream or top with fresh fruit. Don’t be intimidated by the delicateness of the dough. Cutting the sheets into small rectangles makes it easier to work with. Try the filling combinations found here or experiment with your own creations. Be sure to tell me about your favorite new combinations at everydayelegance@gmail.com. To make the phyllo cups you will need: • 1 package phyllo dough, found in the frozen foods section • ¼ cup melted butter • Muffin pan with 12 sections • A soft bristled pastry brush (I use a clean paint brush)

Prepare the filling before making the phyllo cups. See filling recipes below. • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Once the phyllo dough has thawed, unroll it onto a flat surface. The number of sheets of dough found in a package will vary depending on the brand you choose.

To make 12 phyllo cups, you will need 36 rectangles of dough cut approximately 8 X4 inches. To cut the rectangles allow the layers of dough to remain stacked and using a sharp knife, cut through the entire stack. Immediately cover the phyllo rectangles with a sheet of wax paper or plastic wrap and cover with a slightly damp towel. Any remaining phyllo can be tightly wrapped and stored for a later use. Using a soft bristled pastry brush, lightly butter one of the cut rectangles starting with the outer edges and working towards the middle. Place the buttered rectangle into a section of the muffin pan letting the corners of the dough lay open. Repeat with two more rectangles, layering them into the same section of the muffin pan so that the layers are staggered. Add 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons of filling into the center of the phyllo cup. Fold the loose ends of the dough over the filling one layer at a time so that the filling is completely enclosed by the phyllo. Lightly brush the top with butter. Repeat for the remaining cups. Once you have filled all the cups, bake for 12-14 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the pan.

movie night Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight) The latest film in this trilogy of romantic dramas is filmed almost twenty years after the well-reviewed and popular Before Sunrise, which was the first film about the relationship between Jesse and Celine (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy). The newest film, Before Midnight, has received the highest marks: a 97 average out of 100 from the 42 critics who reviewed it. For it is the most intense, the most realistic, and the most intelligent story of Jesse and Celine to date. Yet, to fully appreciate its full development, it might be helpful, though not necessary, to see Before Sunrise and Before Sunset first. Before Sunrise. In this sweet and well written film, Jesse is a young American vacationing on a rail pass through Europe. While traveling on the train from Budapest to Vienna, he meets Celine, a young college student who’s headed back to the university in Paris after visiting her grandmother in the country. As the train rolls along, their conversation becomes more and more enthusiastic, so involving that they both get off the train in Vienna to continue what they were talking about. They spend the next twenty-four hours walking through the beautiful streets of the city, pouring out their hopes, their dreams and their fears for the future. At sunrise, before continuing on their separate journeys, they agree this time together was magic and thus decide to meet in six months.

Before Sunset. But they didn’t meet in six months. Even though Jesse kept his promise, Celine couldn’t. Her grandmother had suddenly became ill and she didn’t know how to get in touch with Jesse. Nine years later they accidentally run into each other at Shakespeare and Company. Jesse is there for a European book-signing tour of his romantic novel, This Time, which is based on the night he and Celine spent in Vienna all those years ago. Celine happens to be in the crowd. Jesse catches her eye. Going out for coffee, they talk about what has happened in their lives since Vienna. Jesse is married and has a small son. Celine has an interesting job working for the environment and is just getting out of an unsatisfactory relationship. After talking and wandering through the cafes, parks, and the streets of Paris, Celine invites Jesse back to her apartment. Before Midnight Jesse and Celine are in their forties now, driving a station wagon, bound for a vacation in Greece with their twin daughters -- conceived the night Jesse and Celine spent in Paris nine years ago. Celine has gained a little weight, though it becomes her, but Jesse is still as thin as ever. He is an adjunct professor now, still writing novels, which he travels a good deal to interesting locations promoting his latest one. Whereas Celine stays at home in Paris, caring for their home and children, primarily by herself. Lonely and isolated, Celine is worried that her relationship with Jesse has lost its sparkle. Sex has become obligatory. And even though they both agree it would be nice to spend more time with Jesse’s son, Celine argues about moving all the way to America to be near him. She points out that the boy is almost grown and Jesse’s ex-wife can be difficult. Wound up tightly into a ball, the ordinary day-in day-out increasing strains of Jesse and Celine’s marriage and family unravel one night into an ugly, pretty discomforting, utterly realistic verbal exchange. Yet underneath all the turmoil and distractions along the way, Jesse and Celine are still, at their best, the two lovers who spent that magic night wandering the streets of Vienna so many years ago.
