Nicole Jamie IG: @nicolejamieg

FAVORITE NEW BEAUTY PRODUCT? My favorite new beauty product is my Mac lipstick in the color Velvet teddy. This is definitely my staple spring color.

CURRENTLY WATCHING BINGE WATCHING? I am currently binge watching Yellowstone. This has been one of my all time favorite tv shows.

WHAT TRIANGLE RESTAURANT HAVE YOU HAVE BEEN WANTING TO TRY? I’d really like to try Stanbury in Raleigh. I plan on making reservations for my birthday in March, I can’t wait!

NETFLIX OR HULU? I am a Netflix girl! I always find something to watch and I’m guilty of rewatching my favorite shows.

MOST USED PHONE APP? I spend the most (and way too much) time scrolling through TikTok. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL WEEKEND? A typical weekend for me consists of thrifting and evening drinks with my girl friends. We love grabbing drinks in Raleigh at either The Ark Royal or The Willard. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF LIVING THROUGH A PANDEMIC? Through the pandemic I learned how much I enjoy picking up new hobbies and trying new things. I learned how to embroider, cook, paint, etc. Since then, I’ve tired to make sure I slow down and continue to enjoy these hobbies. WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST FASHION SPLURGES? My biggest fashion splurge is definitely jewelry. High quality jewelry is timeless and I hope to have pieces to pass down to my future children. My favorite piece of jewelry that I wear currently, is a necklace from Tiffany and Co.

FAVORITE COLOR COMBINATION? This season has been all about bright pops of color so I’ve been playing with a lot of lime green with bright pinks and oranges. Playing with bright colors has been so fun and a big shift from my usual neutral and white combinations. CURRENT SONG ON REPEAT? The song I have on repeat right now (and forever) is Taylor Swift’s All Too Well - 10 min version. Me and my little sister are constantly jamming out to this song. WHAT THREE BUCKET ITEMS ARE ON YOUR LIST? Three items on my bucket list: attend NY fashion week, surf in Australia, and go on a wine tour through Tuscany, Italy.

HI ANNA…LIP LINES ARE GETTING THE BEST OF ME, I HAVE SMOKERS LINES AND I BARELY SMOKED WHEN I WAS IN MY 20’S. BUT NOW AT 52 THEY ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE NOTICEABLE AND I AM AFRAID THEY ARE ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. WHAT CAN I DO NOW TO FIX WHAT I HAVE AND HOW SOON CAN THEY BE MINIMIZED? THANK YOU! - MELANIE Thanks for reaching out, Melanie! Lines and wrinkles have a tendency to appear as we age, sometimes seemingly overnight. You’re certainly not alone, as this is a common concern for many women, even those who have never smoked. Luckily, there are a few different options to help improve the appearance of etched-in lines and wrinkles. Your first line of defense should always be a consistent and potent skincare routine. I’d recommend keeping the skin hydrated with hyaluronic acid-based products that draw moisture into the skin, as dehydrated skin can contribute to a more noticeable appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Incorporating a retinol will help improve cellular turnover, something that radically declines as we age, and be sure to be very consistent with your sunscreen since we know that sun damage dramatically speeds up the aging process. In terms of treatments, we offer a few different things that may help with fine lines around the mouth. Traditionally, dermal fillers have been used to help with marionette lines, defining the lip border and helping to smooth out the fine lines known as “smoker’s lines.” Fillers can be strategically placed underneath the skin to smooth out the lines, and typically last 1 to 2 years. Another great option for fine lines and wrinkles are laser treatments. Depending on the modality, lasers can help to resurface the skin and stimulate collagen production, revealing fresh, new skin underneath. The last option I would look into is radiofrequency microneedling with the addition of platelet rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin that stimulate your body’s collagen production, while the added PRP proAnna Churchill is the vides growth factors that founder of are naturally found in the Synergy Spa body and improve heal& Aesthetics with two ing. Hyaluron Pen Needleless Lip & Facial Filler

Treatable Areas Include: Lips, Brow Lines, Naso-Labial Folds, Cheeks, Crows Feet etc.

What is Hyaluron Pen? This is the latest trend and the NATURAL alternative to synthetic facial fillers. If you shy away from needles this could be the answer, for people who have a needle phobia and are looking to Plump Lips, Cheeks and reduce the depth of Lines and Wrinkles. This NO NEEDLE Hyaluronic Filler Pen treatment is an affordable pain free option. Filler with the needle can be very painful. There is bleeding and bruising involved not to mention the trauma to the skin from the needle can actually cause scar tissue! The Hylaron pen uses pressure to deliver hyaluronic acid into the skin. The ingredients rejuvenate and lift the skin, providing hydration and stimulating collagen production leaving lips plump and wrinkles filled in. The Hyaluron filler treatment re hydrates the skin. There is little or no pain, clients describe the sensation as similar to very slight pins and needles and there is no recovery time.

What is Hyaluronic Acid • Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the skin, produced by the body itself exists in Epidermis and Dermis layers of the skin that helps to bind water to collagen so that skin can appear plumper, dewier, and more hydrated. • Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant — a substance that retains moisture — and it is capable of binding over one thousand times its weight in water. This substance is naturally found in many areas of the human body, including the skin, eyes, and synovial fluid of the joints. HA used in beauty and skincare products is primarily made by bacteria in a lab via a process called biofermentation. • The body will naturally metabolize the HA so the skin is safe from potential allergies because our human body produces the exact same acid, that is actually composed of two sugars (Glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine). Since the human body makes the exact same chemical substance, it is pretty impossible that one would get any sort of allergic reaction or complication from the substance itself. • As we age, the production of key substances in the skin, including hyaluronic acid (along with collagen and elastin) decreases. As a result, our skin loses volume, hydration, and plumpness.

TRIANGLE COFFEE SHOPS I have tasted countless lattes and browsed several pastry displays to finally narrow this down to some of my favorite coffee shops in the Triangle. Whether you’re a long time local or are just spending the weekend here, here’s the low down on the 5 places I keep coming back to for more.

LUCKY TREE Located outside Downtown Raleigh, across from Meredith College on Hillsborough St. This coffee shop has my heart. It is my favorite in the city. Not only is it spacious, calming, and bright, but the menu items are created with the upmost quality. Their delicious goods are made using whole ingredients and are completely wheat free, with many of the items also being vegan friendly. I found this shop while attending Meredith College across the street. I had the pleasure of meeting the owners (twin sisters, Amanda and Ashley) numerous times in the shop and even found them volunteering in the Meredith community garden. Their passion for wellness and sustainability is apparent in their shop and, well, I just love to see it. Aside from coffee, when you enter Lucky Tree you’ll also find many local makers and artists to shop from. Lucky Tree also has a project called, “Planted.” The project includes a greenhouse and farm that is being built completely off grid. The goal of project planted is to grow many of the things we use, like: oats, berries, spices and teas; as well as introduce more efficient composting measures for breaking down waste, hosting nature and nutrient work shops, wellness retreats, and artist get-a-ways. I highly recommend visiting Lucky Tree for coffee and breakfast. You will love it. LUCKY TREE 3801 Hillsborough St, Raleigh (919) 342-6688 www.luckytreeraleigh.com

• SOLA COFFEE CAFE Okay, you have probably heard lots about Sola. Well, it is true. Sola is fantastic and deserves all the hype! The coffee is delicious and is also perfect for my preferred sweetness. What is special about Sola is their extensive food menu. It's not just basic avo toast or a simple egg sandwich. They have tons of sandwiches, salads, and their famous hot minis (cinnamon sugar = the best.) They also have a variety of retail available and even have local floral arrangements for sale on some days. Because of its deliciousness, it can get a bit crowded, but if you don’t mind the crowd, I 10/10 think you will love it. The food also holds up very well to-go if you’re wanting to eat at home and avoid people. Introverts, I feel you. Sola is an awesome place to grab lunch or coffee and enjoy some great outdoor seating Sola Coffee Cafe 7705 Lead Mine Rd, Raleigh (919) 803-8983 www.solacoffee.com

• 42 & LAWRENCE 42 & Lawrence is another place with amazing tasting coffee. It boasts a very crisp, urban vibe, while serving up a spectacular seasonal latte. I do not like my coffee very sweet. Like really, I mean barely sweet. Because of that, it is always a huge risk to try a latte the way it comes on the menu or to order something special or seasonal. But let me tell you, 42 & Lawrence does it RIGHT. I don’t know what their method is, but it is working. I don’t ever have to make any adjustments or special requests when I order a drink there. It is always perfect and flavorful. They are great at incorporating unique They have some new food items and the two mini quiches they carry now are super tasty. 42 & Lawrence 134 E Martin St, Raleigh (919) 322-1668 www.42lawrence.com

• SIR WALTER COFFEE This coffee shop is for my fun-loving, city people. Sir Walter Coffee has an urban vibe with a cozy feel and is located in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. I’m a sucker for their bright orange mugs and patio seating. It’s such an inviting shop. I find it a great place for grabbing a coffee and working on your laptop for a few hours. They also have an amazing cocktail menu if it comes to the end of your workday and you’re ready to switch over to something strong than caffeine LOL! Sir Walter Coffee 145 E Davie St, Raleigh (919) 322-0019 sirwaltercoffee.com

• FOUNT COFFEE + KITCHEN Immaculate vibes, community driven, quality coffee, and an entirely gluten-free kitchen: that’s Fount Coffee. You know I’m a sucker for a snake plant and a good muffin. I fell in love with Fount from my first time there and have been a frequent guest ever since! They have a variety of seating from stadium style, community tables, a bar perfect for working, and a gorgeous outdoor patio. I highly recommend trying whatever seasonal latte they have on deck paired with one of their toast stacks or a sea salt chocolate chip cookie. Fount Coffee + Kitchen (984) 888-5454 10954 Chapel Hill Rd Ste 109, Morrisville www.fountcoffee.com

• EVERLOU COFFEE CO Everlou has become my Downtown Durham go-to! With easy parking and the perfect housemade syrups, it is always a 10/10 experience. I love how this shop has decided to make all drinks automatically with oat milk unless otherwise requested. Be sure to check out this space for a welcoming and cozy hang! Also, keep an eye out for their cereal milk lattes (so yum.) EverLou Coffee Co. 506 N Mangum St Suite 102, Durham (919) 908-8171 www.everloucoffee.com

• JUBALA COFFEE Located outside Downtown Raleigh, across from the NC State Bell Tower on Hillsborough St. They also have a second location in Lafayette Village. Jubala is all-around fantastic! From high quality espresso to melt in your mouth cookies, they have an array of yummy items I highly recommend. Jubala has been a go-to for me during this year because of their incredibly easy online ordering and curbside pickup process. I have picked up an embarrassing amount of iced oat milk lattes during quarantine. This coffee shop is great for meeting a friend for a treat or just doing a curbside pickup for yourself. Both locations also have plenty of parking which is great to find in the city! HILLSBOROUGH ST 2100 HILLSBOROUGH ST NORTH RALEIGH, LAFAYETTE VILLAGE 8450 HONEYCUTT RD www.jubalacoffee.com

OPEN THE BLINDS AS SOON AS YOU WAKE UP Exposing your eyes to natural light early in the day helps set your internal biological clock and your circadian rhythms, those that regulate hormonal factors that affect appetite, stress, mood, body weight, and sleep habits. A study from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine found that people who exposed their eyes to natural light in the morning had lower body mass index than those who got light exposure later in the day. Based on this study, the earlier you open up the curtains or blinds in the morning, the better.

Self-Care Habits

TAKE A BREAK FROM ELECTRONICS Too many people's eyes are glued to their devices and have too few quality interactions with other people. Take a break from your devices for at least 30 minutes each day. Talk to someone in person or doing something else you enjoy, like a non-techy hobby. The reward will be real life benefits rather than virtual ones. The best time to take a break from tech is in the evening. Electronics emit blue light that can disrupt your internal biological clock and make it harder to sleep. Try shutting off the electronics at least an hour before bedtime and watch your sleep quality improve.

Staying fit and healthy physically and mentally starts with healthy habits and making your heath a priority, rather than putting it on the back burner. The good news is you don't have to devote hours each day, adopt an expensive diet, or even join a gym to improve your health and well-being. It starts with selfcare and adopting habits that will make you feel your best. Let's look at some self-care habits, backed by science, that can help you BREATHE DEEPLY boost your physical and mental health. Breathing too rapidly and shallowly causes changes to the blood pH that worsens stress and anxiety. Train yourself to breathe differently by placing one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. When you breathe in and out, the hand on your belly should move more than the one on your chest if you're breathing right. It takes practice to master healthy breathing. Find a comfortable place to lie down and practice for five minutes every day until it becomes second nature.

MAKE A DATE WITH NATURE A nature walk is the ultimate form of selfcare. With a nature walk, you get exercise, fresh air, and sunlight, along with a beautiful view of nature. Studies show walking in a green space, an outdoor area that's naturally green, is beneficial for mental and physical health. One study found that spending 20 minutes in a park, even without exercising, created a greater sense of wellbeing. Take a nature break and you'll return to your daily life re-energized and more positive.

MORE WATER AND LESS COFFEE Even mild dehydration can cause a depressed mood. Studies show that these symptoms can develop at a hydration level that isn't pronounced enough to cause you to feel thirsty. So, drink water throughout the day even if you aren't thirsty. Replace some caffeine you currently drink with ice cold water, but taper back on coffee gradually to avoid caffeine withdrawal. There's nothing more hydrating than water. If you don't enjoy plain water, add fresh herbs or fruit slices to your water.

DO SOMETHING KIND FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T EXPECT IT

DUMP THE JUNK Junk food, ultra-processed foods and foods high in sugar, do nothing for your health and they're energy zappers. When you eat something overly processed, it causes a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a precipitous blood glucose drop that causes you to feel tired and hungry. For some, this drop in sugar triggers anxiety. Replace the junk food with nutrient-dense whole foods high in fiber and you'll have more sustained energy level and fewer swings in blood sugar.

When you spread kindness to others, it also gives your own health and psyche a boost. According to Mayo Clinic, kindness boosts mood and improves self-esteem. It also has surprising physical benefits. An act of kindness helps lower the stress hormone cortisol and reduce blood pressure. It also shifts the focus away from yourself on to others and helps you connect with the outside world. No need to do something major! Smile at someone, say thank you, or hold the door. Then watch the response you get.

Healthy Seeds

Seeds may be small in size, but they are of incredible nutritional value. They are excellent sources of plant-based protein, as well as several essential vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in the heart-protective omega-3 fatty acids. Seeds have a high satiety factor, which means they can keep you full for longer than other foods, and even help you lose that extra weight. Nature's little wonders are available yearround. They require no preparation, and they are easy to pack and eat, so they make a great snack, especially when you are out and about. You can add seeds to nearly any dish to enhance flavor and texture, and for that extra crunch that makes a meal really satisfying.

QUINOA Even though it's usually cooked as a grain, quinoa is actually the edible seed of a plant that belongs to the same family as spinach and Swiss chard. It is a source of complete protein, which means it contains all twenty essential amino acids the human body needs. It also contains a good deal of fiber, which is useful for cholesterol reduction, proper digestion, and weight management. Quinoa is rich in B-complex vitamins as well as minerals like manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, copper, iron, and zinc. These essential minerals boost energy levels, support bone density, and promote muscle and nerve function. This incredibly healthy food requires minimal preparation time and is an excellent addition to any healthy meal plan.

PUMPKIN SEEDS

Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, a rare mineral that supports the immune system. Their high concentration of copper also provides flexibility and promotes healthy joints. They are a good source of plant-based protein but also offer an array of essential nutrients such as minerals (manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron) and B-complex vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, and folate). Pumpkin seeds are also useful for men's health. The unique phytonutrients they contain (called cucurbitacins) promote prostate health and inhibit prostate enlargement. Moreover, they provide plenty of fiber and, as an alkaline food, they can balance a highly acidic diet and help you maintain normal pH levels.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS Breathing too rapidly and shallowly causes changes to the blood pH that worsens stress and anxiety.

FLAXSEEDS These seeds have an earthy, slightly nutty flavor and make a great addition to many recipes. They owe many of their health benefits to their alpha-linolenic acid content (ALA). ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid that can lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Flaxseeds also contain folate, magnesium, and vitamin B6, three nutrients that also promote cardiovascular health.

HEMP SEEDS

Their substantial dietary fiber content encourages healthy bowel function, reduces constipation, and also regulates appetite and promotes weight loss. What's more, flaxseeds can be useful against breast cancer thanks to the special hormone-like agents they contain, called lignan phytoestrogens.

CHIA SEEDS Chia seeds are high in protein, and a fantastic source of fiber- each ounce supplies a spectacular 10.6 grams. They also contain concentrated amounts of essential minerals: manganese, phosphorus, and calcium all contribute to their amazing health benefits. Chia seeds are full of heart-healthy essential fats, especially omega-3s, such as the anti-inflammatory ALA. Moreover, their considerable fiber and protein content promotes intestinal health and prevents digestive issues such as constipation. These incredibly healthy seeds are a powerful ally against chronic disease, but they can also reduce joint pain, boost your energy levels, suppress appetite, and help you lose weight.

Hemp seeds are a fantastic source of manganese, magnesium, and vitamin E. They also boast a good deal of antioxidants that battle chronic disease, promote skin health, and encourage muscle growth. What's more, they contain the perfect combination of omega-3 and omega6 fatty acids, which enhance cardiovascular health and boost your immune system. Hemp is another fantastic source of highquality vegetarian protein with the complete collection of the twenty essential amino acids necessary for the human body. Everyone can benefit from this

Last fall EOD released its Survivor’s Cut series bourbon—the first legal bourbon released in Wilmington since prohibition was enacted in 1908. CYCLE ACROSS WILMINGTON Spring is ideal for a leisurely cycling adventure from the river to the sea. Rent a bike or bring your own to sightsee and enjoy spring flora along Wilmington’s 15-mile, mostly off-road Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. The multi-use trail connects Wade Park, Halyburton Park, and Empie Park to the Heide-Trask Drawbridge at the Intracoastal Waterway. The trail

provides bicycle and pedestrian access to recreational, cultural and educational destinations, including: Cameron Art Museum, Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden, Firefighter’s Memorial, Autumn Hall, Lumina Station, the UNCW campus, and more. For shorter excursions, choose the 2.5-mile Loop at Wrightsville Beach Park with spectacular views of marshes and the Intracoastal Waterway, or the 1.2-mile Island Greenway in Carolina Beach that connects the town’s parks. For a unique beach experience, rent a big-tire beach cruiser or touring bicycle from a local outfitter. A truly thrilling cycling experience awaits at Blue Clay Bike Park’s 8-mile, single-track mountain bike trail (that’s right--a mountain trail at the coast!) in nearby Castle Hayne. DISCOVER WILMINGTON’S WWII HISTORY To commemorate contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort, on Sept. 2, 2020—75 years to the day after the war ended—Wilmington became the first city in the country to be designated an "American World War II Heritage City." The designation celebrates contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort. From the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA (a WWII memorial credited with 15 battle stars) and Hannah Block Historic USO (with its WWII homefront heritage lobby display) to Fort Fisher State Historic Site (where WWII soldiers were trained) and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

(where a WWII bunker remains a hidden gem today), the area’s historic contribution to the war effort is evidenced throughout the county. Exhibits at the Cape Fear Museum of History and Wilmington Railroad Museum further interpret Wilmington’s role during World War II. Read more about the military history of Wilmington or craft your own selfguided tour by downloading the WWII Heritage Guide Map. (www.wilmingtonnc.gov/WWII). DINE AL FRESCO & ENJOY THE VIEW From the Riverwalk and rooftops to boardwalks and piers, outdoor dining is a way of life for coastal visitors and residents. Enjoy the view as much as the meal when you dine al fresco at a waterfront eatery with outdoor patio seating. Riverfront restaurants from Chandler’s Wharf to the Port City Marina afford stunning views of Cape Fear River sunsets. Just minutes away, waterfront restaurants beckon at nearby beaches, many with outdoor dining options. Watch the surfers as you dine on the Crystal Pier at Oceanic Restaurant and from restaurants at the island’s oceanfront resorts. Watch boats come in as you dine marina-side at Bluewater Waterfront Grill, The Bridge Tender, and Dockside Restaurant in Wrightsville Beach. Enjoy outdoor dining in Carolina Beach with gorgeous views from the pier at Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar or the oceanfront decks at Carolina Smokehouse and Hurricane Alley's or marina-side at Stoked Restaurant.
