GET THE LOOK: TRIANGLE BOUTIQUES

Back To Basics Have you ever looked into your closet and thought, “How did I ever acquire this many jeans?” “Do I really need 5 white t-shirts?” “When’s the last time I wore that dress?” Analysis Paralysis It’s what happens when there’s too many choices. Getting back to basics is all about finding the perfect capsule collection that’s right for your lifestyle. What if you could take seven basic pieces and create an infinite number of looks by mixing and matching one classic style with another? It’s possible and can save you time, energy, and valuable closet space! WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Blazer, White Blouse, Leggings,Gold Necklace: At Ease Heels: Fab'rik 22 | triangle style

• A Blazer • A Good Pair of Denim • A Basic White Top/Black Top • A Printed Blouse • A Versatile Dress • A Basic Black Pants • A Classic tee

BLAZERS There is something about the structure of a blazer that makes you feel confident. You’re ready to take on a meeting and then slip to dinner with your friends. It can be part of a power suit or broken up to give your denim an edge. Here’s how: • A blazer doesn’t always have to match the pant. Mix a patterned or printed blazer with a basic black pant for a winning work look. • Pair a deconstructed blazer with denim to polish off a casual chic look. Add a fun scarf for a fall festive vibe. • Who says blazers can’t be trendy? Pair a colored blazer with a sleek silk jogger for an on trend look that’s sure to dazzle.

A CRISP BUTTON UP IS A STAPLE ESSENTIAL - taking you from work to coffee in a snap. A few adjustments can make this piece very versatile in the style spectrum. Here’s how: • Traditionally worn under a blazer it’s an easy way to pull off a polished look. You can transition easily from day to night by taking off the jacket from your day look and adding some accessories to take on the night. • The button up also works well on its own with a pair of great slacks. If your work environment is a bit more casual, lose the jacket and grab a fun bag for the office. • While the button up has a reputation of structure and refinement, it can also be versatile enough for a casual fall look. Pair a long button up with leggings and boots for a fun and festive outfit.

White Blouse and Black Pant: CT Weekends Bag and Silver Earrings: At Ease Heels: Fab'rik

A GOOD PAIR OF DENIM If there’s one thing every wardrobe needs it’s an excellent pair of denim. The fit should be comfortable but firm in all the right places. This may be one of the areas you can be the most ruthless. How many pairs of denim do you own? How many do you wear? If women wear only 30% of their closet the denim pile may be the majority excess. Pick one dressy dark wash, one black and light wash, and one distressed. You’ll be set for all occasions! Here’s how: • Pair a wide leg denim with a feminine knit. Slide on a pair of mules for a comfy chic on the go look. • Pair a printed button up with a distressed pair of black denim for a balanced edge. • Try trendy layers by pairing a light wash denim with a jacket for a pulled together straightforward style.

THE CLASSIC TEE The must have statement piece. Create the look you want can be all your own with a few simple tweaks. Here’s how: • Tuck in your favorite boyfriend jeans for a quick supermarket run. • Create an effortless luxe look by putting it under your power blazer for an art gallery. • Pair with a wide leg or skinny black pain and mules. Make a bold statement with large accessories or keep it minimal with dainty stud earrings.

Deconstructed Blazer, Bag, Scarf, White Blouse, Gold Earrings and Cuff: At Ease Denim: CT Weekends Heels: Fab'rik

PRINTED BLOUSE a good classic printed blouse is a fun way to add a pop of color to your look. A good watercolor print, the blue hue of the season, or whatever looks best on your skin tone. It’s a fun way to add some personality to your basics. Here’s how: • Belt it in a pair of khakis and booties for the weekend. • Dress it up or down with the right accessories and pairing it with denim or dress pants for work. • Try it under a blazer or over a dress for an upscale event.

A BASIC BLACK PAINT Wide leg, tapered, leggings- there are so many options when it comes to black pants. Though the silhouettes may change, the black pants are timeless. Choose the one that works best for your body type to style. When you look put together you feel put together, and that’s what counts! Here’s how: • Pair with a dress top, your basic button up or printed silk blouse, that can be work appropriate without feeling over the top. • Pair a black pant legging with an oversized tunic and boot. This will take your casual look to the next level. • Try mixing it up with the classic tee. Fashion doesn’t always have to be conventional- freshen up your look by being bold. You’ll have a clean finished look that you’ll love while keeping your pieces versatile.

Black Dress, Leggings and Gold Earrings: At Ease Boots: Fab'rik

THE VERSATILE DRESS You’re never over or under dressed in the right dress. By adding a jacket, shoes, and accessories- your options are endless. Here’s how: • Layer with your blazer and then take if off for a date night out. While the blazer is more of an upscale look, a denim jacket would work just as well for casual weekend wear. • Pair with heels for a night on the town or with sneaks for Saturday soccer practice with the kids. • Wear it on it’s own for a wedding or special occasion. Dial up the glam with your finest jewelry or statement accessories for a party.

Specializing in Glo Therapeutics Fab’rik // Paige Garner What does a typical day look like for you? It looks a little different every day. Some days we have photo shoots and styling, so we are pulling looks together and coming up with current themes to inspire our customers. On other days we are sitting at a computer buying for this season or next, following up with vendors and doing behind the scenes work to keep the team motivated while brainstorming new marketing ideas to add value to our customers. What sparked your interest in fashion? Clothes are one way to feel confident and beautiful about ourselves. They’re how we are showing up in the world. It’s a way to reveal ourselves without words. I’ve always loved this about clothing and I really love to help women feel beautiful about who they are and what they have to offer, so marrying the two things together felt very natural and organic.

A WORLD OF STITCHING AT YOUR FINGERTIPS!

SECOND LOCATION IN WILMINGTON COMING SOON

What is your professional background? How did you get into the retail field? My career is actually in tech. I’ve spent the last 20 years (while also having my boutique) climbing the corporate ladder in a tech company. I’ve loved both, but opening fab’rik gave me the creative outlet that I needed. It allowed me to pursue my passion to lift women up through clothing while having a great elevated positive shopping experience. I’m blessed that I’ve been able to pursue both sides of my personality. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do two things that seem opposing. It can be a lot of work and if it’s right for you, it’s worth it. What's something that sets your store apart? What should customers know about your store that they may not be aware of? We LOVE making women feel beautiful and we love the experience we are able to provide while doing it. Every woman should have their “Pretty Woman” moment, as often as possible. We love doing personal styling appointments for that reason and small group parties with your girlfriends. Anytime we can, we give you focused attention and help you see yourself the way we already see you, as the beautiful bright light you already are. How do you keep inventory fresh and up to date? We get new inventory almost every day, especially when the seasons change. We try to show our customers following us on our social sites as soon as we get it in, so they can get it as soon as possible. Why did you choose the Triangle Area for your store front? Where are you from originally? I’m originally from Ohio and moved here after college in Kentucky to be near my sister who had moved to Raleigh a few years earlier. I’ve loved this area since my first visit. As a girl who loves the beach and a mountain getaway, it’s so nice having both so close.

OAK PARK SHOPPING CENTER 6013 GLENWOOD AVE, RALEIGH (919) 782-2945 BERNINAWORLDOFSEWING.COM

How has your business changed or grown since you started your boutique? The biggest change has been social media and the opportunity that has given us to talk directly to our customers on a daily basis, even if they aren’t in the store. Along with that of course, comes challenges, because there is a lot of content out there and the “noise” can be a lot for any of us, so we have to be really thoughtful about our content and how we add value for our customers. This is an ongoing process for us to learn and iterate on. What do you enjoy most about your career? I love when a woman trusts us enough to allow us to style her. And, when she looks in the mirror for the first time and cannot stop smiling at the person she sees looking back at her. She is genuinely surprised to see herself in a new way. Many of us continue to buy the same cut and color of the same top, sweater, and pant that we have in our closet already, because it’s what we know and what we are comfortable with. So when someone allows us to show her what we see when we look at her, that is so much fun. ☺ Can you hint at what shoppers will see in your store next season? Lots of joggers, faux leather jackets and skirts, lots of cozy sweaters, and elevated loungewear. We will still have the fun tie dye sets, but we will also have the solid knits with cardigans that you can mix and match and wear anywhere. What is your number one must have item from the new collection? Definitely an updated pair of joggers. They can be styled casually or elegantly to be worn around the house or for date night. So many options and they make any outfit look current and on trend.

At Ease // Carol Daley What does a typical day look like for you? Wish I could say I have typical days. Everyday is different and an adventure. What sparked your interest in fashion? I’m not really sure. My mother was very fashionable and had a great deal of knowledge about fabrics and design. Also, as a teenager I was a fashion model, from bathing suits to wedding gowns. I guess that’s where my interest in fashion began. What is your professional background? How did you get into retail? After graduating from college, I was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Air Force, serving for four years. In 1982, I founded Gingham House (both retail and manufacturing). I designed children’s layette items and home furnishings through 1998. In 2001, I opened At Ease. What’s something that sets your store apart? What should customers know about your store that they may not be aware of? Our store has a wide price range. I don’t purchase clothes or fashion accessories to target a certain price point. I aim for quality, comfort and style regardless of price. How do you keep inventory fresh and up to date? I make a concerted effort to schedule three to five shipments every week. It keeps my customers, my employees and me excited to see what’s new. Why did you choose the Triangle Area for your store front? Where are you from originally? Choosing the Triangle was a family decision. In 1994, our family had the opportunity to live anywhere we wanted. We took the year to travel to a number of cities and towns in the southeast. We made three trips to Raleigh with our sons and decided Raleigh had what we wanted in a community. We moved to Raleigh in 1995 and we are happy with our decision. I was born and grew up in Japan, only moving to the US when I was 15. I completed high school and college in Pennsylvania.

How has your business changed or grown since you started your boutique? At Ease started out as a “boutique” department store. We had everything from furniture to fire pits and lingerie to lamps. We had clothes in one corner of the store and the clothes took off. We shifted our entire concept and concentrated on women’s fashion. What do you enjoy most about your career? That it changed as I changed and I was lucky to marry someone who encouraged and supported me along the way. Can you hint at what shoppers will see in your store next season? I hope my customers will love seeing what I selected. This might sound strange but I don’t take pictures or take copious notes when I’m on a buying trip. I’m often surprised myself. I just hope everyone likes what I selected. What is your number one must have item from the new collection? Tops will be the most important items in your closet this fall. We have several designers who make great comfortable and stylish tops.

CT Weekends // Kristi Hipple & Dennis Mayfield What does a typical day look like for you? "Typical" does not exist. Each day we strive to develop new ideas to pursue business. Every day is unique! What is your professional background? How did you get into the retail field? When Kristi graduated from college she was selected by HC Prange, an established department store group in Green Bay, and quickly rose to buyer. She then became the Divisional Merchandise Manager, traveling the world, especially the Orient, and developing and buying product for their stores. After leaving Pranges, she became VP of Merchandising at various companies throughout the south. I escaped Kansas and moved to New York City to attend F.I.T., Fashion Institute of Technology. I worked at the Gimbel buying office, and then went to work for Blue Bell, Wrangler, in sales, in their New York Office at the Empire State Building. Later, I traveled out of Chicago, selling throughout the Midwest. Years later, I got very lucky in Las Vegas when I met and fell in love with Kristi Gay! She had recently moved back to Raleigh to manage a store which she was a co-owner of in Glenwood Village – CT Weekends. I followed her to Raleigh! What's something that sets your store apart? What should customers know about your store that they may not be aware of? What has come to set CT Weekends apart from other ladies’ boutiques is our assortment. Many years ago we made a decision to start buying at the Pret a Porter Show in Paris. We currently feature collections from throughout Europe, Japan, Canada and the US.

How do you keep inventory fresh and up to date? We believe our selection is unlike what anyone else has. Plus, before I met Kristi, I had fallen in love with Paris, and now I have a reason to return multiple times a year! In 2019, I celebrated my birthday with friends from Raleigh and Paris, in Paris. It does not get better! Can you hint at what shoppers will see in your store next season? We are excited about this Fall's offerings. We will be presenting Christina Barros from Portugal for the first time. Plus, we will have new offerings from Made in Sens, Rundholz, Crea Concept, Lunatisme, Karvinen, Terry Macey, and more from Europe. We also feature creative Lora Nikalova and her necklaces and earrings from Milano, Pleats Please and Yacco Maricard from Japan, Lisette and Sympli from Canada and Liverpool, and Michael Stars from the US. Plus a few more surprises just for our clients. We look forward to welcoming one and all to: "Enjoy the Moment" at CT Weekends.

What’s something that sets your store apart? What should customers know about your store that they may not be aware of? Each order is delivered with a hand written note. For each piece you buy, you get styling tips for inspiration on how to get the most versatility out of your new look. How do you keep inventory fresh and up to date? Inventory is updated around the five key collections – Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Holiday. Why did you choose the Triangle Area for your store front? Where are you from originally? I am a Triangle native born and raised. High end fashion meets small town feel here. There are so many trendy places to shop here – Cameron Village, North Hills, and Brightleaf Square, but our store is online. It’s a lot of fun, because we get to connect with people here and all over the country.

Zuna Apparel // Crystal Watts What does a typical day look like for you? Every day is a little different. One day could be focused on fulfilling orders, the next on uploading inventory, and another on scouting locations/models for shoots. One thing is consistent – coffee, coffee, coffee! What sparked your interest in fashion? I remember drawing constantly as a child. I would sketch clothing that I pictured my friends and family wearing. Then I would create tiny paper dolls and cut out their dresses. I guess you could consider them my first collections. What is your professional background? How did you get into retail? I majored in Fashion Design at Meredith College. I learned a lot during my time there, and participated in local fashion shows like fashionSPARK and Redress Raleigh. My first job out of college was actually in banking where I met many entrepreneurs and learned how to create an LLC.

How has your business changed or grown since you started your boutique? I started selling scarves out of the back of my car. I would take samples of whatever I was wearing with me. Now I can ship orders from Virginia to California. What do you enjoy most about your career? At the end of the day I enjoy making women feel beautiful. When I see someone wearing something I picked out, I do a little dance inside. Can you hint at what shoppers will see in your store next season? Comfort is key for our customers right now. BEAUTY AND WELLNESS

SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY

As much as we love testing the latest and greatest in beauty, there’s no denying that the industry is one of the biggest contributing culprits of unnecessary waste. Think plastic bottles, disposable single-use applicators, and excessive packaging that, ultimately, end up in a landfill. That’s why we’ve hand selected some of the best sustainable beauty essentials to replace your less eco-friendly favorites –– once they’re used up, of course! — Kimberly Arnold

COCOLENE Skincare and CBD Range

Triangle beauty favorite, COCOLENE, offers a wide range of skincare carefully formulated to suit your skin’s unique type and needs. Handmade in small batches by the local family business, each skincare product is housed in recyclable amber glass bottles to preserve the formulations’ integrity and promote sustainable use. Thebrand even launched CBD products this year (ranging from 300 mg to 1500 mg) in glass packaging for you and your loved ones (furry companions included!). • Cocolene.com

Face Halo Face Halo Original

I’m not proud of it, but I used to practically live off of makeup remover wipes (late nights, anyone?). While convenient, they don’t make for the most environmentally-friendly makeup removal option out there. According to Face Halo, most users use around 730 makeup wipes every single year. And shockingly, it takes over 100 years for most wipes to break down! Tha ’s why I’ve officially ditched the wipes for Face Halo’s makeup removing pads, which last up to at least 200 uses and can be recycled! Simply add water and rub your makeup away in moments. Trust me, it’ll be a gamechanger for both your skincare routine and wallet! • FaceHalo.com or Amazon.com

Hilma - Natural Remedies (Selections vary) Ready for your medicine cabinet to get a little bit cooler? Thensay hello to Hilma: a new women-owned natural remedy brand that’s championing clean, plant-based solutions for common health concerns, such as upset stomachs, immunity, and tension. In addition to being clinically researched, Hilma’s dye-, sugar-, artificial flavor, and drug-free range is formulated and backed by a team of practicing doctors, scientists and herbalists. And aside from its totally Instagram-worthy aesthetic, we can’t help but fall in love with the brand’s 100% recyclable packaging and its commitment to being 100% carbon offset. Swoon. • Hilma.com

Unwrapped Life Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

You might be thinking sustainable hair care is impossible to achieve. But think again! Unwrapped Life has upped the ante with its plastic-f ree solid shampoo and conditioning bars. For what the bars lack in conventional use, they more than make up for in high-performance and sustainability! Choose f rom nine salon-quality shampoo and conditioner sets to accommodate a variety of hair types, and while you’re at it, be sure to pick up some of the brand’s gorgeous matte gold tins to easily store them! • UnwrappedLife.com

Myro - Deodorant

Folks, let’s say goodbye to unwanted B.O. and say hello to Myro: a chic, new deo! Completely customizable, Myro’s deodorants are available in six 100% natural, clinically-tested scents that are also vegan-, gluten-, soy-, and mineral oil-free. You even get to pick from seven case colors to store your deodorant in! Thesturdy, travelfriendly packaging includes a cap that locks tightly to prevent any leaks (no more crumbling deodorant bits). And the best part of Myro is that it’s completely refillable! Simply set yourself up with auto-refill ordering or buy them à la carte as you need them! • MyMyro.com

Bathing Culture - Mind Kjaer Weis - Cream Eye Shadows and Body Wash Refillable Created by the esteemed makeup artist herself, Kjaer Weis’ brand prides itself on high-performance makeup that’s free Glass, Large Mineral Sea philosophy of parabens, silicones, petrochemical emulsifiers and synthetic fraSponge, & Big Dipper grances. If that’s not enough to win you over, several of Kjaer Weis products are housed in luxe, refillable packaging made from lightMineral Bath

To Bathing Culture, getting clean isn’t just a part of your routine. It’s a self-care ritual designed to cleanse your body and mind. And it’s our solution to transforming any ordinary bathroom into your very own personal sustainable spa! A must-try is the brand’s Mind and Body Wash (in refillable glass), which can easily be replenished at home with the One Gallon Refill. It pairs perfectly with the brand’s ethically-harvested and biodegradable Large Mineral Sea Sponge, which leaves skin feeling silky smooth. To be instantly transported to an otherworldly paradise, soak in the brand’s whimsical Big Dipper Mineral Bath, which is infused with skinloving mineral-rich sea salts. • BathingCulture.com

Our newest laser treatment is the Moxi by Sciton and is a revolutionary treatment that delivers f ractionated energy designed to ref resh all skin types. The treatment is completely customizable and can be tailored to your skin’s needs -- whether you’re looking for a lunchtime refresh or something with a little more kick, Moxi does a beautif ul job at targeting pigment and improving the overall tone and texture of the skin. Another great option is the HALO treatment by Sciton. It combines both ablative and non-ablative laser therapy for incredible results. Good as Gold Fashioning Senegalese Women

Fabrice Monteiro, Signare #1, 2011, inkjet print on baryte paper, 47 ¼ x 31 ½ inches, Courtesy Magnin-A © 2011 Fabrice Monteiro.

Good as Gold: Fashioning Senegalese Women is the first majo exhibition of Senegalese gold jewelry to date that focuses on the history of Senegal’s gold, from past to present, and the beauty and complexity of the way Senegalese women use ornament and fashion to present themselves.

A key theme of the exhibition is the Senegalese concept of sañse (a Wolof word for dressing up or looking and feeling good). Good as Gold explores how a woman in a city like Dakar might use a piece of gold jewelry to build a carefully tailored, elegant fashion ensemble. Theexhibition also looks at the interconnectedness of local and global expressions and understanding of fashion. In addition to presenting over 150 works, the exhibition unveils an haute couture ensemble inspired by the strength and savoir faire of Senegalese women, designed by Oumou Sy—Senegal’s “Queen of Couture” and its most celebrated fashion designer.

For The Love Of Pumpkin

Pumpkin Season is finally here and with it the holiday season you’ve waited for all year – pumpkin spice season. Sure, lattes are great, but I’m already stocking my pantry with tons of pumpkin spice snacks to keep me happy and cozy for months to come, at least if I don’t eat it all right away. If you’re ready for what should definitely be the official flavor of fall, make sure you don’t miss out on any of these amazing foods. If you don’t see these in your local grocery store or online just wait, it may still be a few weeks. But, never fear, there will be pumpkin spice everywhere very soon.

Betty Crocker Pumpkin Spice Mug Cake Mix

Pumpkin spice cake is heavenly, but who has the time to make it? Betty Crocker’s Pumpkin Spice Mug Cake Mix takes just minutes in the microwave. Cake + microwave + pumpkin spice is a dream come true. Each packet is an individual serving, so you just make what you want. There’s even cream cheese icing. If your coffee mug isn’t full of pumpkin spice coffee, why not fill it with cake?

Pumpkin Spice Hummus

Need I say more? Sit back, relax, watch TV, and dip into the tantalizing flavors of Lantana Foods’ Pumpkin Spice Hummus. It’s the perfect blend of pumpkin, tahini, and white beans mixed cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, allspice, and more. Honestly, something healthy really shouldn’t taste this great.

Blue Diamond Almonds Pumpkin Spice

Almonds are already a great snack. But, I’ll probably be skipping the regular almonds for now thanks to Blue Diamond Almonds Pumpkin Spice. It’s a great blend of almond and pumpkin spice flavor. It’s also super easy to grab a handful or put them in a snack bag to take with you on the go.

Talenti Pumpkin Pie Gelato

After a long day, I’m really not in the mood to bake a pie. That’s where Talenti’s Pumpkin Pie Gelato comes in. Of course, we all know gelato is somehow even better than ice cream. Now, it’s also flavored with real pumpkin? I love this season and I can guarantee I’m not running out this gelato anytime soon.

KIND Caramel Almond Pumpkin Spice Bars

KIND Caramel Almond Pumpkin Spice Bars are a must have to toss in your bag before going to work or just as a quick, yet satisfying snack during the day. I already loved KIND bars before this, but now that they’ve given me pumpkin spice, I couldn’t possibly ask for anything more. Wait, just one thing. Please be available all year. Pretty please!

Pumpkin Spice Coffee

You seriously can’t celebrate pumpkin spice season without a warm cup of coffee. Yes, I love my pumpkin spice lattes, but sometimes I just want to sit at home without putting on real pants and breath in the rich, warm smell of pumpkin spice in my coffee mug. If you have a Keurig machine, Starbucks, Green Mountain, and SF Bay have some of the best K-cups. If you don’t use K-cups, Starbucks still has you covered. After all, they were one of the originals.

ROAD TRIP

DESTINATION – BOONE Fall Drives, Artisan Crafts, and Seasonal Flavors

Southern Living recently named Boone one of the South’s Best Small Towns for 2020. A visit to this Blue Ridge Mountain town reveals 250 years of history, amazing long-range vistas, award-winning eateries, vintners, and craft breweries, with plenty of outdoor adventures to help you soak up fall’s final days and colors of the season.

TSM RoadTrip Boone_Layout 1 9/18/20 10:30 AM Page 2

DRIVE ONE OF FOUR SCENIC BYWAYS The most famous of N.C. mountain byways is of course the Blue Ridge Parkway. From Deep Gap to Linville Falls community, a drive through the heart of the Parkway’s ‘Highlands Region’ reveals spectacular fall views that take in more than a 100-mile distance. Plus, N.C. boasts three state scenic byways in the area. Nicknamed ‘Mission Crossing,’ ‘Little Parkway,’ and ‘New River Valley Byway,’ these routes highlight area rivers, farms, and historic homes, general stores, and churches in three counties. FIRST BLUSH OF PEAK COLORS Fall color peaks earliest on the summits of the mountains. The date for that first blush varies, but it usually occurs sometime around the 5th of October. Afterwards, color develops gradually further down the slopes over the course of three weeks. Rest assured, you’ll see color on the drive toward these summits and overlooks in the N.C. highlands: Grandfather Mountain, Rough Ridge Overlook, Moses Cone Estate, Elk Knob State Park, Beech Mountain, and Mount Jefferson. SHOP DOWNTOWN ARTIST CO-OPS Three artisan craft co-ops in downtown Boone are perfect for finding locally-made art for souvenirs or early holiday gifts. Browse original hand-crafted items, such as leather goods, pottery, baby gifts, jewelry, woven or knitted items, and more at Hands Gallery, Doe Ridge Pottery, and Common Good Co. These artist co-ops and many more shops are situated within two walkable blocks along King Street. Hours are generally 9am – 5pm. LEARN MORE ABOUT BOONE – DANIEL BOONE, THAT IS Living history museum, Hickory Ridge, will guide you through the past on tours of six historic log cabins on the grounds of Daniel

Boone Park. Visit the museum any day except Sunday and Monday. Stand where Daniel Boone stood while on a driving tour of the sites listed on Watauga County’s leg of the N.C. Daniel Boone Heritage Trail. Download a county flyer with map and site descriptions from the Museums & History page at exploreboone.com. CELEBRATE FALL HARVEST IN A FOODIE HAVEN Savor the flavors of fall at one of Boone’s best dining spots. Start with small plates and cocktails at The Horton Hotel & Rooftop Lounge. Booneshine Brewery’s specialty smoked meats go perfectly with seasonal craft beer. Carb-load at Basil’s Deli where they create their own pastas in-house. Wolf down a wild game burger and signature cocktails at The Cardinal. Don’t miss the mostloved mac & cheese and fried chicken at Proper. Feast on French cuisine at Joy Bistro. You can’t go wrong with fried pork bellies at Vidalia, or bison filets at The Gamekeeper. TREK DOWN WATERFALL TRAILS From Boone, follow the Blue Ridge Parkway north to milepost 271.9 and Cascade Falls. The hike is a half-mile in to view the falls from two overlooks. Or, head south on the Parkway to Julian Price Park, milepost 296, and hike the Boone Fork Trail to the Boone Fork Falls, also known as Hebron Colony Rocks. It’s a 5-mile loop. Drive further south to milepost 316 to hike to several overlooks at Linville Falls (about a 2- mile round-trip hike). In the town of Blowing Rock, hike the steep trail down to the Glen Burney Falls, and back up (2.3-mi. total). Or, head to Valle Crucis Conference Center and follow the trail to Craborchard Falls (1.5 mi. total). SAMPLE SEASONAL BREWS Boone boasts award-winning breweries with seasonal varieties carrying the flavors of fall. Visit Appalachian Mountain Brewery,

Booneshine Brewing, Lost Province Brewing Co., and Blowing Rock Ale House for ciders, Belgians, ales, saisons, porters, and stouts made with apples, honey, caramel, toffee, molasses, chocolate, coffee, or elderberry. Step aside pumpkin spice – ‘Oktoberfest’ is in full gear here! LINGER AT VINEYARDS WITH VIEWS The Appalachian High Country American Viticultural Area (AVA) includes five award-winning wineries near Boone and Banner Elk. Start your tour at Grandfather Vineyard and enjoy seating on the patio or by the Watauga River. At Banner Elk Winery, gaze at the surrounding hills and mountains just outside the lovely town of Banner Elk. Surrounded by forests and farm land, Linville Falls Winery is a stone’s throw from the Blue Ridge Parkway and its Linville Falls Recreation Area hiking trails. Two more wineries in the AVA, Villa Nove Vineyards and Watauga Lake Winery, are located at Watauga Lake just a short drive over the Tennessee state line. TAKE A KAYAK ADVENTURE Set out on a serene, scenic kayak trip down the New River or a thrilling, whitewater adventure on the Watauga River. Choose from four river guide outfitters in the area for guides, kayaks and shuttles. And, Price Lake Boat Rentals can provide you with a kayak for a relaxing float on pristine Price Lake at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 297. CLIMB YOUR WAY TO THE TOP Ages five and up can push their limits and learn a new skill on the climbing tower at Rock Dimensions and Footsloggers in downtown Boone. Rock Dimensions will provide guides for excursions, too. The Tower to Rock option provides 2 hours of instruction on the climbing tower plus a half-day excursion at a rock climbing spot surrounded by golden fall color.

HOME // SUSTAINABLE HOME ESSENTIALS Now more than ever, it’s critical for us to make more conscious buying decisions that could help positively alter our planet’s future. Whether it’s ditching plastic bags at the grocery store, repurposing glass containers for storage, or buying from brands that have made solid commitments to offset their carbon footprint, there’s something we can all do to encourage less waste. Now, I’m not saying run to your kitchen right now and throw out every piece of plastic you own. That would be counterintuitive to the goal of sustainability. Instead, consider plastic-free and eco-friendly alternatives when you're in need of a replacement in the future. Remember: we don’t need the whole world working towards sustainability perfectly. We just need all of the world to chip in so we can all make a bigger, collective impact. That’s why Triangle Style Magazine has rounded up some of our favorite sustainable home essentials for you to slowly start to make more conscious consumer decisions for you, your family, and the planet. Because every day should be Earth Day! — Kimberly Arnold

G R E E K - I S H S T U F F E D S W E E T P OTATO E S

This sweet potato is my husband Jack’s favorite of the bunch (we’ve eaten a LOT of stuffed sweet potatoes this week). My inspiration for this one is (loosely) a Greek salad. I made a tangy herbed quinoa salad with red onion, dill, and lemon, and I finish it with a dollop of tzatziki sauce.

S W E E T P OTATO B U R R I TO

This is the recipe for stuffed sweet potatoes that I make the most often. Mix black beans with chili powder, shredded cabbage, olive oil, and lime juice. Top it with a scoop of salsa and what I like to call “quick guac,” which is the fastest guacamole you can make – just use the back of a fork to mash the avocado with a bit of lime and salt. Top it on the potato and dig in!

While your sweet potatoes are baking, roast the chickpeas for this recipe. I like to roast a whole can, because even though we won’t use that many in the stuffed sweet potatoes, they make a great snack for later. You can also use fresh chickpeas, as long as they’re pre-cooked. This recipe has a yogurt sauce that’s similar to the one in recipe #1, but instead of herbs, stir in turmeric.

FA L L H A R V E S T S A L A D S T U F F E D S W E E T P OTATO E S

One of my favorite fall salads is a shaved Brussels sprout salad with radishes, apples, cranberries, feta, and a really bright apple cider vinaigrette. Here, I took that salad and stuffed it into a potato. Keep this one in mind next month when you’re trying to use up T-giving leftovers!

The 7 Most Effective Essential Oils for Stress Relief

Scents have a powerful ability to trigger memories and evoke feelings, and they even affect the nervous system by sending signals to the parts of the brain that regulate mood. When it comes to relieving stress, certain scents are more effective than others, and essential oils offer an excellent opportunity to isolate those scents without having to deal with artificial chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Below are the best essential oils to use

for relieving stress, anxiety, and other mood imbalances.

LAVENDER Lavender has long been prized for its soothing scent, and recent studies have backed up its stress-fighting properties. A nursing study found that applying lavender essential oil to clothing was particularly effective at staving off work-related stress, and that people who inhaled lavender aroma before taking memory tests performed better and reported lower levels of stress than those who used a placebo aroma. Lavender oil is readily available from any source that sells essential oils, and because of its popularity, it is also common to see lavender-infused bath salts, massage oils, and even teas.

ORANGE Preliminary research suggests that oil derived from both sweet and bitter species of orange can help alleviate anxiety. In fact, they may be especially useful for those who suffer from social anxiety, as one study revealed that inhaling diffused orange oil led to lower stress levels in public speaking situations compared to both a placebo and a control aroma. Pure orange essential oils are ideal, but in a pinch, crushing or folding a piece of fresh orange peel can also release a small burst of citrus oil.

CHAMOMILE Thanks to its calming scent, chamomile is often added to tea blends, but new studies suggest that essential oil extracted from the plant may have potent stress-fighting properties as well. Research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine concluded that chamomile has both anti-anxiety and mild anti-depressive qualities, and that it may help with irritability as well. Chamomile can be steeped in tea or taken in capsule form, but for best anti-stress results, consider applying it topically by mixing it with a carrier oil--just be aware that some people with ragweed allergies report minor skin reactions to chamomile, so test it on a small patch of non-sensitive skin first. YUZU Though it is likely unfamiliar to most westerners, oil from the yuzu fruit has been used as a relaxation tool in Japanese aromatherapy for hundreds of years. Scientific literature on the fruit is scarce, but several small studies have established a link between yuzu oil and temporary suppression of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's fight-or-flight response. LEMONGRASS Lemongrass oil is a staple of many spas that specialize in aromatherapy, and for good reason. A 2015 study seeking to measure anxiety levels found that inhaling diffused lemongrass oil led to an immediate reduction in stress and tension levels in participants compared to the control and placebo groups. Not only that, but the lemongrass group also recovered from stress much more quickly than the other groups, suggesting promising uses for lemongrass oil in the treatment of stress following traumatic experiences.

VETIVER Though clinical testing has only been performed on mice, vetiver extract was found to significantly reduce stress-related symptoms such as increased heart rate and muscle tightness, and anecdotal data suggests that the effect on humans is similar, albeit less potent. Essential oil made from vetiver is unique due to its very slow evaporation cycle, meaning that oil applied topically or sprayed onto clothing takes multiple days to fully disappear. The lengthy drying time makes vetiver oil an excellent option for people who are going to be in prolonged stressful situations, such as multi-day speaking tours or presentations. BERGAMOT Bergamot is the source of Earl Grey tea's signature aroma, and the oil of this small citrus fruit boasts a number of stress-busting properties. Exposure to bergamot essential oil was found to promote positive feelings and measurably reduce levels of cortisol, commonly referred to as the body's "stress hormone." Bergamot can also be used to alleviate symptoms of fatigue stemming from emotional or mental stress. For best results, bergamot essential oil should be applied topically by mixing it with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or avocado oil. Aromatherapy has long been used as an all-natural way to treat stress and anxiety, and the widespread availability of quality essential oils has made the benefits easier than ever to experience. Wither diffused in the air or applied topically with a carrier oil, the essential oils above have been proven to relieve stress and induce calm feelings.

Great Reads THE WOMEN IN BLACK by Madeleine St. John

It is the 1950s in Sydney, Australia. World War II had recently ended, ushering in a new era of hope and prosperity, along with immigrants looking to rebuild their lives. Traditional roles were slowly evolving, as many young women headed off to university instead of focusing solely on marriage and family. This delightful and uplifting romp illustrates these developments in a slice-of-life view of the changing social and economic climate by offering an in-depth look at the lives of several saleswomen in the Ladies' Frocks Department of Goode's Department Store, referenced in the title as The Women in Black.

Travel Back in Time Most of us have not done much traveling this year. In these

books, you can travel back in time and to other countries, feeling blessed as you read about circumstances even more harrowing than our own, or escaping into an era you wish you could have experienced. Whichever historical time period fascinates you most, I guarantee there’s a book out there you can read to daydream and learn more about while we’re still staying so close to home. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com

THE WOMAN OF A THOUSAND NAMES by Alexandra Lapierre, translated by Jeffrey Zuckerman

This fictionalized biography masquerading as a Russian novel explores the complicated loves, losses, and unfettered life of Russian aristocrat, Bolshevik Revolution survivor, and 20th century marvel Maria Ignatyevna Zakrevskaya-BenckendorffBudberg, known as Moura to her friends. The author holds nothing back in describing Baroness Budberg’s life, with exacting detail painting the fluctuating state of the world; the parade of lovers, friends, family, husbands, and children who all knew a different side of her; and the nearconstant changes in settings during Moura’s tumultuous existence. Did anyone truly know who Moura was? Did she know herself? This is left up to the reader to decide, a life lyrically presented without judgement, but instead with true admiration for the accomplishments of the human spirit.

THE EXILES

by Christina Baker Kline

In a harrowing portrait of 19th century Australia, three women’s lives – two British prisoners, one Aboriginal girl – converge as they fight to survive the atrocities of British colonization. In this unflinching narrative, the women sent to the then-penal colony had often committed no crime greater than being from a lower class and in the wrong place at the wrong time. The mistreated British women and the heartbreaking story of the Aboriginal Lost Generation are showcased in the mistreatment of Evangeline, Hazel, and Mathinna. As their paths cross, they wrestle with questions about how to survive, what kind of prisoner to become, what kind of violations to allow, and worst of all, what kind of violations to perpetrate.

A SPY IN THE HOUSE (THE AGENCY, BOOK 1)

by Y.S. Lee

London in the 1850s is no place for a girl alone. Saved from the gallows where she was supposed to be hanged for stealing, Mary Quinn instead finds herself instructed in the art of being a female spy at Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls, the cover institution for a group known as The Agency. When Mary turns 17, her training is put to the test as she goes undercover as a lady’s companion. But Mary has more than her undercover identity to hide, as personal secrets about her upbringing and mixed-race Chinese heritage are threatened with exposure during her investigation. This is an intriguing start to a series that has action, mystery, romance, suspense, and a plucky young heroine PERFECT FOR READERS AGES 12 AND UP.

Staging And Selling Your House

WHAT NOBODY TOLD YOU UNTIL NOW

You want to sell your house, so you meet with a realtor. You find out what you need to do to stage your house. You learn that you need to de-clutter, depersonalize, clean, and do everything possible to make the house look spacious and inviting. You want to offer potential buyers a vision of their future lives in this home. You've taken notes and formulated your plan, but here are some things nobody has told you yet. — Written by Joyce Carl

emotions

You hire a professional stager, or your realtor is giving you some staging tips. Someone decides that your dining room table needs to go on the other side of the room and your living room furniture is arranged all wrong. You hide it well, but inside you are mad and sad. How can this person tell you that you've been living your life in an incorrectly arranged living room? And what about the great meals and gatherings that happened even though the table was on THIS side of the room?

EXCEPTIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICES

MANAGE. RENT. BUY. SELL . INVEST

Even if you are happy to be leaving this house for another, strong emotions appear when you least expect them. After all, you've done a lot of living here, and you've put a lot of yourself into the arranging and decorating of your home.

fruit boxes

You are supposed to clear out the clutter in your home and make it look spacious. You pretend you didn't have half your countertop covered with kitchen gadgets; you make your desk look like no one ever used it, and so on. The logical course of action is to begin packing these items in preparation for your upcoming move, so you need boxes. You can purchase boxes from a home improvement store or moving company, or you can drive around town asking businesses for empty boxes.

WHEN KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SUPERIOR SERVICE COUNTS

If you can get fruit boxes from your local grocery store, do it. These boxes are sturdy; after all, they have to protect damage-prone fruit. They usually have a top with sides that slide down and completely cover everything except the bottom of the box. This style of lid also means that you can probably get away without taping the boxes shut. A bonus feature is that fruit boxes usually have handles!

the inspection report

You've been trying to get that loose piece of siding to stay put for five years, and you did a pretty good job of it right before you put the house on the market. The house is clean, beautiful, and well staged, and you are looking forward to a little break from the work of it all. Then you get the buyer's inspection report, which says, "Bottom siding on the north side needs to be attached properly," among other things. Patience is a virtue, so it is said. You may have done a superb job cleaning and staging your home, but the work is not done until the buyers are satisfied that any items found during the home inspection are repaired or negotiated into the price. And most likely, something will be found. Even if the roof, siding, electrical system,

furnace, and appliances are in great shape, the inspector might discover that the bathroom faucet started leaking. Expect the unexpected.

you still live here

You want your house to sell quickly, so you try to stage it perfectly. However, until you close on this house and move into another, you still have to live here. It might seem like a good idea to pack away everything that was on the desk, but how many times are you going to need the tape or the scissors in the next few months? You can pack away most of the kids' toys so that their rooms look big and airy, but how will you entertain them while you're trying to pack up the rest of the house and organize a move? You definitely do want to remove some items from your home to stage it well, but be selective. If you can't realistically imagine yourself living without an item until the house sells, then that item isn't one that you want to pack away. Staging and selling a house is an adventure. Go into it expecting some surprises, and keep your eyes focused on the big picture. All the hard work you put into staging your home is going to pay off when the right buyer falls in love with your house.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT It was twenty years ago that I first met Lois. Walking by my house one muggy August afternoon, she suddenly sat down beside me on the bench under my oak tree and told me her husband of forty-nine years had just left her for his secretary. She was, understandably, taking it very badly. I wondered, if this could happen after such a long marriage, was any relationship guaranteed? And if not, how would someone like Lois survive? I wasn’t able to even imagine the pain, to say nothing of the embarrassment, being a divorcee just one year shy of her fiftieth wedding anniversary must be. From that time forward, I intently watched Lois. What would she do? Where would she go? Well—through her almost constant tears--she put one foot in front of the other and just got out her front door. First thing every morning she put on lipstick, brightly colored clothes, and went to St. Paul’s, sitting by herself, not wanting anything more strenuous than the company of strangers.

Frequently, after church, she would stop by the coffee shop on the corner for breakfast and to read the local paper. And Lois went for walks— sometimes three, four times a day—tapping her cane on the pavement as she went by. In between, usually in the afternoon, she got on a bus and rode it from beginning to end, and back again. At other times, she went to the park to watch children play baseball, hockey, etc. And when her fiftieth wedding anniversary came along, Lois went by herself on the cruise she and her husband had once planned. Later, after she returned, she sat down on my bench once again and, this time, there was a note of triumph in her voice; she had had her celebration. I am still grateful for the lesson Lois taught me: there is always a way to suffer through pain until you finally become indignant it’s still there. Lois persevered. And the way she did that was entirely her own.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS KNIVES OUT At the end of a winding, tucked away country road, sits a large, f oreboding house. Though eerie, looming over all the land below, and after you get past the snarly black dogs who race to greet you, it nonetheless draws you in. Flickering candlelight, gargoyles, hidden stairways all lead to the attic, the empty sanctuary of a world famous mystery writer. His throat had been cut and a bevy of relatives and detectives are downstairs trying to discover what happened. Was it suicide or murder? Christopher Plummer, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Toni Collette star in this best writing nominated eccentric and completely enjoyable film. TOKYO STORY In a pretty seaside town in rural Japan, live an elderly couple whose adult children have, some years before, left the dwindling opportunities of their small town and moved to the city. There had been tears and promises to visit often. But, as time went by, their children's visits home stretched further and further apart. They've been busy. Worked hard to have successf ul careers, made f riends and had children. And bit by bit, they have lef t their small town ways and childhood memories behind. Realizing, they are getting weak, their grandchildren are growing up, and their own children might not visit with them for a while, the elderly couple take the 2 day journey by train to Tokyo in hope of spending time together. A poignant, beautifully told story - one that stays deep in the heart.
