ON LOCATION: THE STORE

Proprietor, JOHN REESE, AIA

How would you describe THE STORE to someone who knows nothing about it. THE STORE is a former neighborhood grocery reincarnated as an owner-occupied guesthouse with business-friendly amenities. We offer two upper-story guest rooms and a common space designed for comfort and creativity. We offer an urbane, loft-like interior, useful amenities and a manicured courtyard--the perfect respite for resting, working, or both. We specialize in well-designed, day-lit spaces that meld thoughtful amenities, industrial details and creative conversation.

Is there a particular room you like the most and if so why? No particulate room — I just tell my guests that light, space and material are as important as food and water to a good and healthy life. And, as an architect and former professor, I tell every guest that staying here is like the Salvation Army--you're always welcome, but you may be required to sit though a sermon on design. Can you share one tip when it comes for those considering taking on a renovating project? Understand that this is not architecture, it is therapy.

THE STORE accommodates a maximum of two couples overnight and/or small group meetings during daytime hours. Our bedrooms and baths provide hotel-like amenities, including “forgetme-not” toiletries, thoughtful creature-comforts complete with a personal concierge service. We're ideally located in the Glenwood-Brooklyn Historic Residential Neighborhood directly north of the Glenwood South entertainment district and within easy walking distance to both Cameron Village shopping center and Downtown Raleigh's central business district. THE STORE has so much history behind it but do you have a personal favorite story? My partner and I moved to Raleigh in 1996 and found a quaint bungalow for sale in this quirky neighborhood that was located directly across the street from (what was then) this huge hunk of failing clapboard that had been a corner grocery for almost 50 years until 1974. I told my partner that in no way would we buy the little bungalow and then stare directly at that with that decrepit building every day. The solution? We bought that decrepit building instead of the cottage. I knew it had potential, but neither one of us could have imagined the blood, sweat, tears we would shed in the making. We also didn't realize how much love THE STORE would bestow back to us and the neighborhood.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT

AMY SIMON

How did you get your start in modeling? I really had no clue where to start but I always wanted to be a model. When I was in high school I was in a few fashion shows at the local malls. I was also on something called McAlpin’s Teen Board which was a local department store where I lived in Kentucky. We did fashions shows throughout my junior and senior year. But as far as getting an agent and getting print and other work I really had no clue how to do that. When I was 19 I shot with a professional photographer for the fi st time in Cincinnati, Paul Ludwig and he suggested that I send the photos we got to Heyman Talent Agency. I did and they signed me. I had a few jobs here and there but I still really didn’t know what I was doing. No one showed me how to be a model. No one really told me how to pursue it as a career. It wasn’t until I moved to South Florida several years later that my career really took off. I took an intro into commercials and acting workshop with Linda Zerne. I was terrifie , honestly because I was so insecure and didn’t want to perform in front of others but I knew I had to try it and get over my fear if I wanted to pursue this industry. I was also a broke single mom and the workshop was $400! But, I knew I had to take it. And I am so glad I did! In that workshop not only did I learn so much but I also met some new friends and one of them, Bobby, introduced me to my fi st agent in Miami. I am still with that agency today almost 20 years later. So, not only do I model but I’m also an actress, spokesperson, voice-over talent, writer and video producer. This industry has so much to offer and I feel so blessed. So, now I love helping others get their start! I feel honored when a mom or anyone reaches out to me for help. I feel like I am paying it forward and I am so proud when someone takes a workshop with me or does a coaching call and they get their own agents and start booking work. It honestly makes me so happy. I am living my passion and purpose and it’s great!

How do your modeling classes work? I call them modeling workshops. I team up with a local photographer and we shoot in their studio. I show the students what it will be like on a real set and then I show them how to move and pose in front of the camera and give them lots of tips and pointers. I have them bring options of clothes to wear and we select the wardrobe together. Then we start shooting. I show them their photos as we go. The best part is just seeing their faces light up when they get to see themselves in a new way. It’s a total confidence booster. I want everyone to leave feeling better than when they walked in. And by the way it’s not just for kids. I work with adults too! It’s never too late to try something new. What advice would you give to someone who is just getting started? Call me! Please! I don’t want people to spend unnecessary money or get taken advantage of. But also keep in mind that this is a business you get out of it what you put into it. It’s hard work and perseverance. But when you’re passionate about it like I am it’s all worth it. Tell us about your most memorable photo shoot? My twin brother text me one day and said, “hey do you know you’re on an entire wall at Bed, Bath & Beyond?”. I had no clue. So I took my daughter to the closest one and sure enough I was on the packaging for a pillow and it took up an entire wall. Th t was awesome! Also seeing myself on packaging at Target and on sign in Walmart was cool. But there were so many great shoots! I got to work all through the Carribbean for Carnival and Princess Cruise Lines, I shot at amazing resorts, for Disney, I’ve been on billboards, in magazines, on flyers, etc. I had no clue that I would get to do all of those things and am very grateful I followed my dream no matter what anyone else said. I’m also very grateful to agents, casting directors, and anyone who helped along the way.

What one thing would someone be surprised to know about the modeling industry? How much work goes into it. No one really sees that side of it they only see the fun side. And trust me it’s fun. But it’s also a lot of work. You have to constantly go on castings that can take hours, or do video submissions which also take hours, always checking emails for auditions or bookings, staying in contact with your agent, getting new photos, buying wardrobe, maintaining your hair and skin, staying in shape. The e are lots of websites you have to pay to be on. The list oes on. You also have to be willing to give up some of your social life, travel, and miss out on things to you can work. So while it looks glamorous and easy there is actually a lot that goes into it. Just booking the job…takes a lot of work. Do you have one trick you can share for someone who doesn’t like to have their photos taken? Don’t worry about what others think of you and don’t miss out on the opportunity to take photos because time flies nd you’ll wish you had captured those moments. So, the key is findi g good soft light and your best angles. You can practice in front of the mirror or by taking selfies or have a friend or someone help you take a bunch of photos and then see what looks best. Photographers take hundreds of photos of models to get just ONE good photo. So, don’t be hard on yourself.

Where is your favorite location for a photo shoot in North Carolina? My very fi st shoot in North Carolina was for The Grove Park Inn in Asheville. It was absolutely beautiful. And now my daughter goes to App State and gets to see those beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains every day. Nature is always a great backdrop for some great photos and North Carolina is full of some of the most amazing scenery anywhere. In my opinion. Do you have beauty tips that have carried over from your professional life to your personal life? I met a model about 15 years ago and she said start taking care of yourself now. Eat better, workout and stay out of the sun. I think just hearing it from someone I really looked up to made a big impact on me. I started eating fruit for the fi st time in my life! Can you believe it! I grew up in Kentucky eating fried salty food and a lot of junk food. I still love my friend salty food but I’m so thankful that the model took the time to share her health tips with me. So thank you Shelly! I still look up to you.

eye lash EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

extensions

Want to wake up with dark gorgeous lashes that enhance your natural beauty? Then eyelash extensions are exactly what you’re looking for! Eyelash extensions have gone from fringe to mainstream in the past decade or so, allowing wearers the freedom of ‘naturally’ long and beautiful lashes without the bother of applying falsies or burning through multiple tubes of mascara and the inevitable dark circle it produces as the day wears on. You wake up looking and feeling naturally beautiful, many people find they actually wear less makeup! You can swim, sweat and sleep in them – and just think how effortlessly glam you’ll look by the pool. Find out all the details Natural Esthetics in Downtown Cary www.naturalesthetics.org

Put simply, lash extensions are individually applied fibers, attached one by one to the base of each healthy strong natural eyelash with specially formulated adhesive. the lash extensions last between three to four weeks and shed with your natural lashes. If you find you are loving the look then you would come in every 2/3 weeks for a “fill” appointment depending on how fast your lashes shed and your at home care. The longevity of your extensions will vary depending upon your natural lash growth cycle and how well you maintain your aftercare suggestions. If your hair grows fast, so will your lash extensions and fills may be needed more frequently. It is normal to lose 5-7 natural lashes a day per day = 70-90 lashes in 2 weeks! As you lose your natural lash a new “baby lash” is growing through the follicle. It is expected to return with 40% of your extensions intact to be considered a regular fill client.

Hybrid Lash Extensions

A beautiful blending of classic and volume lash extensions to create a fuller more texturized look than a classic set. The best of both worlds! SESAME SOBA NOODLES

S P I CY WAT E R M E LO N TO M ATO S A L A D

SUMMER CORN SAL AD CHILE LIME DRESSING

SESAME DRESSING ¼ cup rice vinegar 2 tablespoons tamari, more for serving ½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 teaspoon grated ginger 1 garlic clove, grated ½ teaspoon maple syrup or honey FOR THE SOBA NOODLES

6 ounces soba noodles*, see note Sesame oil, for drizzling 2 avocados, sliced Squeezes of lemon 2 cups blanched snap peas ¼ cup edamame 1 watermelon radish or 2 red radishes, very thinly sliced 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves Sesame seeds INSTRUCTIONS

Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, tamari, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and honey. Set aside. Bring an unsalted pot of water to a boil and cook the soba noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse well in cold water. This helps to remove starches that cause clumping. Toss the noodles with the dressing and divide into 2 to 4 bowls. Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto the avocado slices and add to the bowls along with the snap peas, edamame, radish, mint, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Drizzle with more tamari or sesame oil, if desired.

(this makes extra) ¼ cup Sir Kensington’s Avocado Oil Mayo or vegan Fabanaise 1 tablespoon olive oil ¼ cup chopped cilantro, including stems, plus more for garnish 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, plus extra slices for serving ⅓ serrano chile, plus more to taste pinch of garlic powder INGREDIENTS

3 ears of grilled corn on the cob 1 red pepper, diced 1 green pepper, diced ½ small cucumber, diced 2 ripe peaches, pitted and diced 1 small avocado, pitted and diced 8 basil leaves, thinly sliced juice of 1 lime, plus lime wedges for serving 3 tablespoons Chile Lime Dressing, plus more to taste sea salt

DRESSING

1 tablespoon tamari 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons rice vinegar 1 small garlic clove, minced ½ teaspoon minced ginger SALAD

3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced into wedges 5 cups cut watermelon (about 2-inch triangles) 1 thinly sliced jalapeño and/or a few Thai chiles 2 tablespoons Thai basil or regular basil 2 tablespoons toasted cashews ½ avocado, diced Sea salt, to taste, if desired Lime wedges, for serving INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS

Make the dressing: In a small food processor, combine the avocado mayonnaise, olive oil, cilantro, lime, serrano, garlic powder, onion powder and a few generous pinches of salt. Pulse until combined. Chill until ready to use. Slice the kernels off of the grilled corn and place in a large bowl. Add the red pepper, green pepper, cucumber, peaches, avocado, basil, lime juice, a few pinches of salt, and toss. Add a few tablespoons of dressing, toss again, then taste and add more dressing and/or salt to taste. Serve with extra dressing and lime slices on the side.

Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the tamari, lime juice, vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Arrange the tomatoes, watermelon, and jalapeños on a platter or in a shallow bowl. (This salad should not be served in a deep bowl because the flavorful juices will sink to the bottom.) Drizzle with the dressing and top with the basil, cashews, and avocado. Season to taste and serve with lime wedges.

Great Reads

Get Your Genre Reads On

If you’re a fantasy, mystery/thriller, romance, or science fiction reader, then this list of recommendations is for you! Too often we hear of literary fiction or non-fiction receiving all of the attention, but there is no shame in loving what’s known as a “genre” read – that is, a book written in one of the specific classifications for a type of story. For instance, in order to be a romance, the characters must end up in a happily ever after or happily for now situation. Here are some recommendations for recently published titles for the genre readers among us!. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com

FANTASY: LEGACY OF ASH

MYSTERY/THRILLER: WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING

Legacy of Ash is a 700+ page fantasy epic that relies on impeccable world building, instead of savagery and sex, to keep the pages turning. Finally, a new series created with such intention and craftsmanship that it brings back that feeling of excitement fantasy readers first felt when discovering masters like J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia). Steampunk-esque magic and mythology-inspired gods create a unique world of intertwining storylines, thoughtful character development, and impressive world building. Books 1 and 2 are currently out, with book #3 not far behind! Perfect for adults and teens.

What makes this thriller so psychologically haunting is that it could easily be true. Cole has taken the gentrification of historically Black and other marginalized identity neighborhoods and plumbed that reality to its darkest depths for an eerily uncomfortable read due to its chilling familiarity. Told from alternating perspectives, the main characters’ suspicions converge in action-packed final chapters that don’t shy away from the depths of human greed and depravity nor the grim actions of exactly what it takes to rebel against it.

SCIENCE FICTION: HENCH

by Natalie Zina Walschots

ROMANCE: WRITTEN IN THE STARS

by Alexandria Bellefleur

What do a pragmatic, careerfocused, monochromatic-loving lesbian and a star-gazing, fortunetelling, color-obsessed bisexual have in common? A meddling brother and friend who believes in love at first sight whom they both hate to disappoint. Alexandria Bellefleur has crafted a perfect debut romance that pays homage to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Playful, charming, humorous, and hopeful, this #ownvoices queer romance offers a happily ever after look at two young women finding each other and their place in the world.

Turning the superhero genre on its head, Hench is an action-packed novel about an unlikely heroine who makes you think twice about the price of heroism. A nerdy data temp becomes a superhero’s sophisticated data science department head, using her analytical skillz to identify weaknesses and destroy superheroes in order to prove no one wins when the cost of collateral damage is measured in human lives. Witty and wry, the scenes flash by, evocative of comic books with tight prose and punchy dialogue, moving the plot toward the inevitable battle between good and evil. Only in Hench, which side to root for is decidedly complicated. Older teens will enjoy this as much as the adults.

KITCHEN HACKS

From seriously bad breath to soggy lettuce to dangerously dirty appliances. These quick and easy food hacks will leave you wondering, "Why didn't I think of that?"

USE THIS HASSLE-FREE METHOD TO CLEAN YOUR BLENDER. Raise your hand if you've ever cut your finger on the blades of your blender while you've been trying to clean it. There's an easier way to clean this essential kitchen tool. Immediately after pouring out the food you want to eat, fill the blender with warm soapy water, put the lid back on and give it a whirl. That will clean the bowl and the blades while keeping your fingers safe. Avoid using hot water as too much pressure will build up and you may end up with a soapy explosion all over your kitchen!

SLICE STEAK FRIES Apple slicers aren’t just for apples! Cut one end of the potato for stability then push it through an apple slicer and voilà...perfect potato wedges! Works great with sweet potatoes too!

MORE JUICE / LESS SQUEEZE Next time you need fresh lemon juice, try this cool hack. Microwave a lemon for 7-10 seconds. after cooling, give a quick roll on the counter then squeeze...you’ll get more juice with way less effort!

FORGOT YOUR BREATH MINTS? Reach for an apple! Previously, fresh parsley was recommended as the best emergency breath freshener when you can't brush your teeth or pop a breath mint. However, more and more people are turning to apples instead. Grab one from the fruit basket and bite in to fight bad breath caused by garlic, onions and even tuna.

TURN NACHO TOPPINGS INTO A TACO. Everyone loves nachos, but nobody likes scraping the baked-on cheese off the baking dish they used to cook their nachos. Save your cookware, and your favorite toppings, by laying a large flat tortilla on the baking sheet bef ore you add the nachos and your toppings. The tortilla will catch any cheese, meat or vegetables that fall off the nachos, turning them into an instant taco.

Heat your food evenly in the microwave.

KEEP ICECREAM FROM MELTING BUBBLE WRAP Who knew?? Bubble wrap is also acts as an insulator. While on the road, keep your favorite pint from melting by wrapping it in plastic bubble wrap. It’ll stay firm longer!

OPEN THE MOST RESISTANT JAR IN SECONDS. Don't break your wrists trying to open that jar of pasta sauce. Slip on a pair of yellow rubber kitchen gloves (even one will do), and you'll get the grip that you need right away. If you don't have any gloves, you can get a similar effect by wrapping an elastic band around the lid.

Is there anything worse than taking a bowl of pasta or plate of vegetables out of the microwave, only to find some parts are scalding while others are still freezing? Heat your food through evenly the first time by putting it on the plate in the shape of a ring with a hole in the middle. This arrangement eliminates the center, which is usually the part that doesn't get heated thoroughly.

Revive limp leafy greens.

It's easy to forget about that head of lettuce or bunch of cilantro at the back of your fridge. Often, when you finally remember it's there, the stems are droopy, and the leaves seem limp. Stop! Don't throw those greens in the compost! Instead, cut off the bottom end of the stems, place the greens into a glass (or vase, if they're large) filled with icy cold water and put them back in the fridge for a few hours. You'll see a vast improvement in color, texture, and shape.

Four Super Easy Indoor Plants Indoor plants aren't just aesthetically pleasing--they can help purify the air and induce calm. But if you don't naturally have a green thumb, the idea of houseplants may create stress rather than reduce stress! Help yourself feel good and help your place look good with easyto-grow houseplants. Consider the spider plant for any light, the snake plant or cacti if you have a spot with lots of light, or lucky bamboo for any spot away from direct sunlight.

Spider Plant

The spider plant g ows well in a variety of lights and temperatures. Plus, it's not super picky about its water intake. A mature plant grows long leaves, making the spider plant an ideal option for a hanging basket or plant pedestal.

Snake Plant

The snake plant is another easy indoo plant option. Snake plants prefer plenty of light, but beyond that, their requirements are minimal. Avoid over watering and the snake plant will be a hearty plant for years. Some can grow several feet high, so if you prefer something smaller choose a dwarf option, such as the Whitney or Futura Superba.

Cacti

If you have a spot with bright light, consider a cactus. Cacti come in many interesting shapes and grow best when ignored. Just the tiniest amount of water every now and then will make your cactus happy.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky for you, lucky bamboo can thrive even if you forget to water it. The mai requirement for lucky bamboo is to avoid too much direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. And as the name implies, even with neglectful care, many people believe the plant may bring you good luck. Try your luck with lucky bamboo, cacti, snake plant, or spider plant for the best chances of seeing some green.

The Imitation Game Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley star in this suspenseful and energetic film about the British mathematician and cryptographer Alan Turing. Recruited during World War II by Britain’s top secret Bletchley Park, Turing created the first universal computing machine, thus making it possible to break Nazi Germany’s Enigma code, thereby successfully intercepting Germany’s operational maneuvers. As a consequence the war with Germany was cut short by as much as two years.. Arrested after the war for being a homosexual, when homosexuality was still a punishable offense, Turing, the father of modern computer science and artificial intelligence, died in disgrace, his achievement unacknowledged.
